As far as I know there is no Mandrake for the power
PC. Linuxppc and all the other ppc distros are made by
 different companies.

   Is there some
way that I can setup a
harddrive partition to be a gig or something, copy

I'd try downloading the iso and mounting it. Disk Copy
or Toast Pro (even if you have no burner) should be
able to mount it. Then run the mounted iso as if it's
a CD and when it asks where you want to install, tell
it to go to the new partition you made for Linux (I'm
assuming linuxppc will ask you that, I don't know
 first hand).

If you have to buy Toast Pro, you're probably better
off just buying a copy of Linuxppc.

I'm thinking of getting a powerbook and putting
 linuxppc on it myself.

Terrywhen you have a dependancy error then you need to
make sure that the file specified in the error gets installed
on your system. To do that you need to locate the .rpm file
that the file specified in the error is part of and install
it. This needs to be done for every file that is specified
in the dependency error messages that are displayed by the
 rpm program.

If you use --nodeps to force rpm to install a package that is
giving you a dependancy error then that package will be
broken and not work untill the dependency is resolved.

The --nodeps switch can be used to make reluctant .rpm files
install, but the package will only work properly if the
dependency you forced rpm to ignore is bogus. But, how do
you know if a dependency is bogus? On my system the last
remaining dependency that was not allowing 2.1.1 to install
was kdesu. A search of my rpm database showed that kdesu was
installed (and I use kdesu all the time so I already knew it
 was on the system).

I figured that this was a bogus dependency. So with all
other dependencies already resolved I went ahead and
installed the 2.1.1 .rpms with the --nodeps switch. Then
after doing a 'rpm --rebuilddb', running the update-menus
program and rebooting the system, version 2.1.1 of KDE worked.

rpm -Uvh --replacefiles *.rpm

and finally with all your kde rpm in the directory

rpm -Uvh --nodeps *.rpm

you may have a conflict with kdeaddutil rpm
you can either use
rpm -e kdeaddutil*.i586
and that should remove the package or

just simply use
rpm -Uvh --nodeps --replacefiles *.rpm
to install all your 2.1.1 with no dependency and to replace the files

Hope that helps.

I installed RealPlayer8.rpm on mandrake 7.2 with no problem at all. I had
problem with the beta versions but not this one. This one works like a
charm.

 Dear friends:

You can get RealPlayer 8 from RealPlayer home page at
http://www.real.com by selecting the free RealPlayer 8 Basic and then
choosing under OS "Unix". This will take you directly to the Unix
 Community Supported RealPlayer page at:

 http://huxley.real.com/real/player/unix/unix.html?src=rpbform

You have a choice of downloading two files for Linux: a RealPlayer8.rpm
and the other file, which is a RealPlayer8.bin file. Due to the problem
with "a different architecture", the rpm file will NOT install. It has
been strongly advised by our gurus NOT to try to install it either by
forcing it (--force) or by using the --ignorearch option. INSTEAD, do
what I just did, thanks to a message from Wolfgang and from Tom
 Brinkman:

First uninstall RealPlayer 7 by typing the command as root:

 #rpm -e RealPlayer

Now install the RealPlayer8.bin file (around 5.8 meg) as ROOT. Then, as
root, continue your installation and install the plugins and mimetypes.
This is part of the installation as root. Just follow instructions until
you have installed it fully as root. Then, as USER, go to the directory
it has installed itself in, namely,

 /usr/local/RealPlayer8

 and type:

 $/usr/local/RealPlayer8sh mimetypes.sh

 and

 $/usr/local/RealPlayer8sh plugins.sh

This will give you the plugins and mimetypes as user.

Now, all that's left is to make it more convenient to launch RealPlayer8
 as a desktop icon.

Create the icon, then in Properties, Execute type:

 kstart /usr/local/RealPlayer8/./realplay

If you don't add "kstart" you won't be able to launch RealPlayer
 automatically from the icon.

So, add the "kstart ..." and it's done. That's it.

I am going to send this to the Newbie list. Hopefully, this will help
 other newbies.

My thanks again to everyone who helped.

Re: [newbie] How do i configure my xfree86

2001-02-06 Thread Robin Regennitter

you can su to root then issued the following command:

cd /usr/src/linux
make xconfigurator

then you can configure what you want to include and exclude. once you have
done that then you can:

make deps
make bzImage
make modules

before you install the modules. you should backup your /lib/modules/2.2.xx
to /lib/modules/2.2.xx.old

make modules_install
then copy your bzImage to the /boot directory and also your system.map.

If you want the 2.4 kernel. It's in www.mandrakeuser.org you can find it
in there. There is also a readme text that you can follow direction from
there.

 Hello Richard,

The computer I work with in the university I study uses the CA810A
motherboard, which has the Intel's 810 chipset.
I haven't had any serious problems related to the sound and
graphics configuration with Mandrake 7.2. The installation procedure was a
somewhat hard. No graphics mode for installation started, which is not
really a problem, but the length of the text lines were too large to
appear completely on the screen. So, I was able to read just the right
halves of the messages lines; I had read the tutorial so it wasn't too
difficult to make sense out of it. The installation language was spanish.
During installation I didn't have a chance to probe the graphics but
 XConfigurator did the job latter.
The sound worked as soon as I started KDE. No extra work was
needed!! I can even use kscd to listen music cd's without any kind of
 trick.
I have read in this list that Intel's 810 chipset is the kind
of hadware that is not recommended to have, but I am satisfied so far. It
even works better than the SiS6326 AGP Graphics Accelerator --which
another computer I use has-- in the sense that it seems that the last
needs a lot of extra effort to make it work correctly; extra effort that I
 have gone through partially.

   Good luck,

[newbie] XFree Problem

2001-01-29 Thread Robin Regennitter

Hi All,

I have an i810 built in graphic chip and I have decided to get a 16 meg
graphic card instead of having 8 meg. I have "ATI all in wonder 128" PCI
version. XFdrake keeps detecting the i810 even though I have disabled it in
the BIOS setup. I tried manually edit the xf86config-4 using r128 and/or ati
driver but it can not find the device. I have trouble understanding the
concept of BusID of the xfconfig-4 part of the script. I know my card is in
PCI slot 4. the BusID "PCI:0:0:0" is a mystery to me. I did a "lspci"
to find information on BusID or the I/O. Can anyone help me out? This
wasnt the first time I had problem relating to PCI versus i810. I had
Voodoo3 PCI before Mandrake 7.2 became released. and it worked just fine in
7.1. When I tried installing 7.2 XFdrake wouldnt detect my PCI Voodoo card.
No matter what I did. XFdrake refused to look at anything else but my i810.
So I took Voodoo off. At first I thought it was just the Voodoo card that
XFdrake refused to look at. Now I know it just not Voodoo3 PCI, it's other
PCI card as well if i810 is built into the motherboard. I'm fustrated. I
have Linux coexist with windows. and ATI works like a charm in windows but
it sucks in LInux.

I can understand what you are saying here, that the face of Linux will
change and it will no longer be recognised as the free OS it is now. I
disagree as I don't understand how simplifying the installation and use of
Linux for basic home users will dramatically alter the foundations of the
 Linux OS.

 --
 Dave,

I agree with you completely. The proper attitude is that making Linux
extremely easy will not (should not!!) SUBTRACT from what is here today!
If
you enjoy config files and mucking around with parameters - that will all
still be there. If you enjoyed CLI work with the shell of your choice -
that will still be there. But for the majority of people who are not
interested in the "guts" the ease-of-use would be there. Add the "layman
apps" that the non-enthusiast might be interested in and suddenly Linux
could start to be a real alternative in the consumer market. That would
 help the consumer and Linux.

And... that may be happening with companies like Dell/Compaq/IBM shipping
Linux pre-installed. Yes, it's probably mostly servers but that's a start
and more than has been there. Think of what would happen if these
hardware
suppliers start offering consumer packages. My crystal ball is no clearer
than anyone else's in this department, but it shouldn't take much
 imagination to consider the possibilities.

Hi
I have attempted to install the 7.2 download 2 CD version last weekend and
had similar problems. Additional comments:
(1) Ditch the Drake partitioner and use the non-free Partition Magic 5.X
program instead. The Drake partitioner will not work properly with Quantum
Fireball drives containing a FAT16/FAT32 partitions and obviously from the
number of complaints on Mandrake lists, there are many other types of drives
it will not work on as well.
(2) KDE 2.0 is prone to crashes and too resource intensive. (Yes, I
installed
the final version.)
(3) No matter what type of install is attempted, 7.2 will install non-system
packages which were de-selected and not install other packages which were
selected.
(4) KDE2/this-kernel-version causes constant disk activity. (64MB RAM, swap
128MB). CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE is totally ineffective to shut down a process
gracefully!
(5) USERDRAKE is clearly broken as are many others.
(6) Many configuration scripts are broken.
(7) The installation process needs very much work.

There are a number of interesting ideas in 7.2 but they are just that: ideas
which have been incompletely implemented. As an avid Mandrake 7.1 user
I find this to be sad.
Mandrake seems to have lost it's way: The Mandrake-Macmillan monopoly deal,
Macmillan's non-support, Macmillan's different releases of 7.2 (Wallmart
and so on). It is clear that the present Mandrake Management aim Mandrake
at every type of user, anyone who can read their adverts and prod a
keyboard,
but who is the Mandrake distribution really suitable for? Mandrake Technical
side clearly have their ideas which seem to conflict with the Mandrake
Moneymen
ideas.

In short: In my opinion, 7.2 is not ready for novice users/Windows users
and possibly too much trouble for even an expert to bother with.
You can do a lot better Mandrake, but do you really want to?

-- Original Message --

Hi all, I am still unable to find the desktop that shows up on the
linux-Mandrake tutorial for KDE. I have only a tool bar at the bottom of
the page and no icons at all. The K button is a penguin with Linux
written in. Is all this normal with the downloaded 7.2 version? I realy
like the look of the desk top in the tutorial.
Not sure if I have a complete download or if my CDrom is giving up,
cause I had several packages (16 in an attempt at expert/workstation

[newbie] updating problem

just recently, when I go to do a security update. It wouldnt install it
because of an error. So I downloaded the rpms from the update site. and
manually installed or upgrade it and I noticed that an error by /usr/bin in
conjuction to /var/lib/rpmrequiredby .rpm Well dang this
var/lib/rpm... wasnt in 7.1 and 7.0. I just delete that file out of system.
and since then no problem. what is this /var/lib/rpmrequiredby used
for? To me I think that just causes some problems. Has anyone encountered
this updating or installing rpm problems relating to the /var/lib/rpm?

If StarOffice is way to much for you because of its size, and afterall, all

try abiword, but I've found it to be a bit unreliable with formatting
properly
(although it will bring up the words ;o) ) SO is much better at handling
M$Office documents. You might want to try Applixwords. It's usually part
of
a suite, but the word processor can be purchased (yeah, not freeware)
separately for about US$40, I believe. It also handles .doc files very well
and does a good job of maintaing formatting.

conflicting i810 and 3DFX. It couldnt make up its mind to which to use so
it disregarded the PCI version of 3dfx and it used the i810. However, I
disconnected the PCI and it worked just fine. a lot better than than when I
had the 3.3.6 version of XFree86. It display up to 16 bits instead of 8
bits. 3dfx display up to 32 bits which I wanted to use. Hopefully by 4.0.2
the bug will be fix with the problems of pci version of 3dfx and i810

  my
CD. This program came with my CDRW drive (Creative Labs).

  [snip]
Did you download the ISO image?
What program will you be using to burn the cd?

Charles

Since the install ISO is 649MB you should not try to burn it on a
 650MB
blank. Pony and several others make 700MB CD-Rs but be sure you do not
  pick
   up an audio only CD-R.
NERO trys to make it hard to record from an ISO. There is no info in
  the
manual or on their web site. Here is what you need to do:
   1) Find the folder to which you downloaded the ISOs, right click on each
  and
   choose rename;
mandrake 71-ext.iso change to mandrake 71-ext.nrg
mandrake 71-inst.iso change to mandrake 71-inst.nrg
   2) Launch NERO
   3) Close the New Compilation window so that you have only the main
 window
   open.
   4) From the toolbar along the top of the window select CD Recorder/
 Choose
Recorder and be sure your CD-RW is picked
   as the recording device.
   5) From the File menu select Burn image. In the pop-up window navigate
 to
the folder with the .nrg file and click on one and click OK
   6) A Foreign Image File box will open. Click OK.
7)A Foreign Image Setting box will open. Change it were necessary to
 show
the following values: Data mode 1; Block Size 2048: and the Swapped
 option
   should be checked.Click OK.
   8) A Write CD window will open. If you have not done much burning and
 are
not familiar with your CD-RWs abilities check all 4 boxes, test speed,
simulate, burn, and finalize. By doing this NERO will auto select the
 burn
speed. Finally in the top right of the window click the Write button and
  the
process of burning the CD will begin.
When the 1st CD is finished follow steps 5-8 to create the 2nd.
Hope I have not made it seem too complicated. If you have any
 problems
  or
other questions you can reply to the list or, contact me direct if you
   choose.

hmm, maybe i'm just naive but so what if MS bails out Corel as far as
 linux
goes. There is/was nothing stopping MS from creating their own
 distribution
of linux nor stopping them from building applications for Linux. I
 can't
believe that there aren't any MS programmers running linux at home (or
 at

somewhere in that company.

Just a thought here. Corel has successfully (not in my opinion but in the
minds of some) ported their Office suite to Linux using Wine. If you dig
 very
deeply you find that within MS there's a debate about whether they
should/shouldn't produce MS Office for Linux. Could there be a connection?
Spin is everything these days it seems. Just thought I'd suggest that this
story might have a positive spin in the end.

  Hey Y'all,

Before I got into using Linux I used various versions of the MAC O/S and I
always found it to be somewhat unstable, the one thing I did like about it
was the fact that it was not nearly as dumbed down as Windows, it is easy to
use, but you still need to have some kind of understanding as to what the
machine is doing. Hopefully when OS/X gets all the way (it is available in
server packages) out they will somehow port it to run on Intel based
processor machines, and hopefully the stability problems will be corrected,
without having to compromise the ease of use.
If these things happen, and the work on developing a more consumer friendly
Linux product continues, Microsoft could be in for quite a shock.

Of course bad news for Bill is good news for the rest of us.

Pardon my heresy, but I don't think Linux will make it as a viable

 1) the Linux community is too decentralized.

 2) there are no such things as standards, even defacto standards - Cut
Paste is an example - there is not even any social pressure for developers
 to adhere to a standard.

 3) window managers make things too different - a nightmare for the corporate
world, even though you're running Mandrake (or Debian, or whatever) your
window manager makes the environment foreign to anyone that doesn't run that
 window manager.

 4) Linux developers work for free and are not subject to the same QA that
 Apple is subject to.

 5) Linux developers work for free; consequently their incentives to create
 and contribute are different

 6) Linux users in general would probably balk if they had to actually pay
 for software

 7) the average computer user is *required* to make *a lot* of effort
understanding how to "operate" the machine. The complexity is not
sufficiently hidden from them when needed

 8) there is a certain amount of elitism within the Linux community in

 just an observation)

 9) Linux is inherently a programmers/developers environment and
*specifically* geared to those kinds of folks

 10) talk like what I'm doing here is not well received by the Linux
 community in general

Again, don't get me wrong I really, really like Linux ( window managers)
and I would really like to see it be a viable alternative desktop. But from
my personal observations (painful) personal experience and knowing the
expectations abilities of my friends family, it's not there yet. I
don't expect it to be there in the next 5 to 10 years (even considering
internet time). I think there will need to be a broad change in perception
among the Linux folks about the "computing world for average folks" before
that will happen. Unfortunately, I think Linux will have to be backwardly
compatible with MAC and Windows - whatever that means.

ps: I've just installed HelixGnome (www.helixgnome.com) and it looks really

I think you should be able to locate KOffice through Google.com, or
 otherwise from www.kde.org

a possible alternative to KOffice, I'm also thinking of dumping S.O. and
trying Corel WordPerfect for Linux. Any hope for that? If anyone else
out there has a suggestion for a (MS Word compatible?) word processor I
can use along with Mandrake, please let me know.

You can go to www.abisource.com and get Abiword. It is a small
wordprocessor that reads and writes MS-Office documents, but it is still
in an early stage. Many options are not supported yet.
I have downloaded and installed WP8 for Linux, and this does a great job
 in handling MS-Office documents also.

I note also that impractically slow printer and word processing
performance doesn't occur much as a problem on this help list. What are
people using their Linux-Mandrake for? Or does everyone but me have a
Pentium III, 800Mhz, with a gazillion MB's of RAM?

Pentium II/400 with 128Mb of Ram. I use my machine for a lot of internet
activities, sometimes some wordprocessing/spread-sheeting, I am running a
Seti client 24/7, I program on this machine, play with some graphics
through Gimp, and some other things. And often all this runs simultaneous
and much faster than with any way of setup I have ever had possible in
 Windows.

I really am amazed that I'm having so much trouble getting a simple
desktop setup together and running when my requirements are so
completely basic. I was weeks getting my modem/internet connection
 straightened out, and now this.

It took me several months to get my ISDN card going, I had to buy a
different video card for this machine because at the time I started again
with Linux Mandrake (had given up on Redhat several times) the video card
I had was not supported well (who likes 640x480 and 16 colors?)
The Linux approach is different from Windows. Windows setup takes you by
the hand, and it will tell you what is good for you. Often, if you do not
agree, it will backfire on you in some way.
With Linux, YOU are in control. But to be in control means that you have
to know a lot of things. So, may I bid you welcome to the world of
 knowledge!

Oh well, I'm learning tons, and I do have my Microsoft setup to fall
back on. What an irony given that I started all this to get clear of
 Bill Gates and his Bandits!

You will get there. I cannot remove windowz because I need a program from
work that only runs in Windoze (no luck with VMWare so far). But I run
that only once every 6 weeks when I get a standby call.
It took me a long time to take the step to move, but I did. And I love
every moment afterwards, because I keep learning and knowing.

[newbie] Hacker on Licq

2000-09-12 Thread Robin Regennitter

Yesterday, some hacker from Spain got into my system and started to hacking
away at some of my linux files especially in Licq files. Also I know that
some of my files in the /usr/share directory has also been manipulated.
There were features that were useless. How do I prevent this from happening
again? Is there a good firewall program I can use?

Rob

Re: [newbie] Hacker on Licq

2000-09-12 Thread Robin Regennitter

I usually go online when I'm using the computer and go offline when I'm not.
Apparently, this hacker just secretly performed some work to alter my system
and I was not even logged in as root. I thought I had fixed it when I
deleted all the licq files and replaced it with my back-ups. I noticed
something was not right. so I logged in as root to deleted the user and
added another user. when I go logged on as the new user. there were a
whole lot of features missing. and most of them were useless. I noticed
when the system were creating the directory for me. It told me that it
couldnt install some files from the /usr/share files. I'm like great.
Time to reinstall the whole mandrake system. This time I got a few
programs like pmfirewall and the other program others had suggested. I
will be better prepared next time some crook try to break in. Luckily I
have some other .tar.gz program that I've spent hours downloading put away
in some secret place just in case I need it again.

Hi,

 Rob,

Which version of Mozilla was it that the JAVA didn't work for you? I
haven't had any trouble with M17, or M18 yet. In fact I'm waiting for the
latest nightly build of M18 to get done downloading so I can set it up. I
installed this one at the office and was pleasantly surprised to find that
they're tweaking the daylights out of this thing. It's no where near the
resource hog that it had been two weeks ago when I last checked. Memory
usage is down from 54% to 33% with the browser and email client running at
the same time. That's one heck of a tweak! The CPU usage is WAY down
also. With M17 the CPU usage was between 24 and 40 percent with browser
and mail client running. It was at a steady 0.03% for build
 2908. Quite impressive!

When Mozilla is finished it's going to be one HELL of a nice
Browser/Email/Editor suite. Functionally it's almost to the same place
that Netscape 4.75 is. I said "almost". Don't get too excited. They've got
a little ways to go yet cause it's a bit sluggish yet. I think there's a
few too many memory leaks yet and some other small issues. However! it
isn't far more crash resistant than Netscape 4.72, .73, .74, and
4.75. Pound for pound even in it's present state it's 3 times the
browser/email client that Netscape 4.xx is, and Netscape 6 can't even
 smell it's dust.

As someone who does not like to have MS stuff on my PCs but have to
 because

Linux. It really is great, especially for an open system. But I
 believe
  it
still has a way to go before it can be used by the general computer
 public.

  i second this...

  That is another problem.
There are numerous configuration files (X, etc.) and they are all
 located
  in
different places instead of in one directory where a non programmer can
  find
  them.

there is method to the madness but it's not obvious...

There are numerous other problems that make using Linux a steep learning
curve - which it does not need to be. I am certain it will improve and
 I
sure hope so, but it cannot improve unless normal PC users like myself
  point
out where they see the problems for them.

Agreed, it's simple trivial things that aren't there. However, I don't
 think

the Linux commuity, in general, cares in the least that you have such
  problems.
I don't think it will ever improve... It's been nearly 10 years, it's
  shameful
it's still this hard for a commoner to use. It's cause they don't care
  about
the common user's experience. There's all sorts of bigotry surrounding
 how
intelligent a user should be and that they don't deserve the right to use
 a
computer if they aren't a member of the programmer/IT sect!

I have had problems with modems. PCI modems doesnt work most of the
time. this came with my computer. There's a HOWTO modem section in the
Documention in Mandrake 7.1. I went out and bought an external Modem
Blaster from Creative and it works great.

Re: [newbie] Install problems

2000-08-14 Thread Robin Regennitter

Well, I purchased MDKLinux 7.1 Complete which only include the installation
disk and application. I had tried installing it on my Old 166 mhz IBM
Aptiva. When I got to the end and it ask for the application CD. My CD-Rom
wouldnt open. and along side with that. My X-windows would not get
installed. At first I thought maybe the disk were damaged because I had
installed 6.1 on it with no problem. So I thought well I'll try it on
my newer computer which is 533 Intel Celeron and surprisingly It installed
everything including the application CD. and Everything is working
beautifully. So my guess is that my old computer is too outdated for the
MDKLinux 7.1.

 Hi all,

I recently installed MDKLinux 7.1 and when the install got to where it
asks
for the "Extensions CD", my cd-rom wouldn't open. So, I skipped it. Is
there
a way to install it after the fact? And, has anyone else experienced this
 problem?

 Thanks,
