[newbie] VCR - PC - DVD
Since VCR appears to be rapidly being overtaken by DVD, I would like to transfer quite a few VHS tapes to DVD in anticipation of the day when my VCR dies and I need to replace it with a DVD recorder. I have plenty of HD available, AMD 2400xp 512mb so the pc should be up to it, what I don't know is what I need to actually transfer the VHS tapes to the HD in the first place. Do I need a T.V. card or do I need a graphics card with video audio in jacks ? Also, what software to use. Found this on the forums and it does work, you get an error message popup when you start/restart kde but it can be ignored and closed. You are correct, in that what I provided will work for a local repository of the files, however, the script that I mentioned in my reply will create the local repository on the fly, from the 3 ISO images and then build the installation DVD from that. Pretty much the same thing that my write-up does, only with the added step of mounting the ISO's in loopback and copying the files. I can post a modified version of the mkdvdiso.sh script that works for me, you would need to create the temporary directories for the file copies yourself or change my script to match your own temporary directories, or you can download the mkdvdiso.sh script and alter it yourself to work for Mandrake. Either will build a bootable installation DVD from the ISO images. Also, I will try to go in and update the twiki entry for building from ISO's along with putting my copy of that script there as well if you want to check it again later. As I said in my original message, I need a solution that doesn't involve screwdrivers - not just because I'm a girl (!) but I have ME - the combination of brainfog plus physical limitations means that installing anything that involves taking the case off the box is beyond my capabilities. As I understand it, an ethernet card would be installed inside the box - which means that I'd have to pay not only for the card but for the installation of it, and of course there's the inconvenience of having to take the box to the shop etc...plus the cost of the router which appears to be considerably more expensive than the USB modem. Right now, I can afford the broadband service plus the USB modem. I'd have to save up for another 2-3 months to go for the other option. I'd appreciate your opinion on this - will the ease of use of the ethernet option be worth the wait and the extra expense? Saw an HP PSC2175 printer/copier/scanner at a greatly reduced price, I expected a bit of a challenge getting it working in 9.1, but no, it was a no brainer to get printing and scanning working, the cardreader slots work as well- I can even read smartmedia from it. However if the printer is already on (nothing in the card slots BTW) and I try to boot the computer I get a post error where the boot process hangs at memory testing. I suspect there is something in my bios (Phoenix Award) that I need to change but I can't see it, also if I power up the printer while I am in bios setup the keyboard locks. Just updated to the latest f-prot and the old check-updates.sh script has been replaced by one called check-updates.pl. Upon issuing as root ./check-updates.pl I get the following error ./check-updates.pl Error: Unable to include perl module: 'HTTP::Request'. Please install this module and try re-running this script. (Hint: man CPAN) Fatal error. Exiting... I can't take the Hint as I can't find man CPAN and I can't find the appropriate RPM which includes the above mentioned module. If it is the same as the z25 this might help, if only to give you inspiration. I got CDs 1-3 (bittorrent worked for me), md5sums checked o.k and then burnt them from the command line using cdrecord -v speed=2 dev=0,0,0 -eject /home/(path snipped)/Mandrakelinux-10.0-Community-Powerpack-CD1.i586.iso CD1 boots to press enter to install etc then gives a message could not uncompress second stage ramdisk, may be a hardware error or kernel bug After pause I get to the select keyboard, then accept licence, then partion, then to select packages to install now the error message no kernel available followed by a string of messages about /usr/bin/per;-install/pkgs.pm.185 and so on. At this point I can do nothing except power off. The problem appears to be caused when I burn the CDs, tried 4 times with different manufacturers (700mb) media, 2 CD-R 2 CD-RW and get the output below. (I have d/l CD1 iso again and get the same result) output from cdrecord - BURN-Free is OFF. Performing OPC... DVD+RW is the way to go, since it supports random r/w, which means you can place a file system on a DVD+RW blank and use it as a 4.4GB demountable medium with the normal file drag drop, delete, etc. Optical technology has finally arrived! Firstly, alter your /etc/fstab for the DVD writer to provide options rw and noatime. These work in kernel 2.4, but curiously didn't make it into 2.6. Secondly, make a file system on it using one of the mk???fs utilities. I prefer a UDF file system, but you will have to compile your own mkudffs. UDF is the file system used for DVD movies. Also do a google search on 'growisofs' and read all about DVD+RW. Download the tools.growisofs is an extremely useful and simple DVD utility and replaces cdrecord, etc for DVDs. Prepare to snigger... My existing installation was fairly full so I created a new partition for the purpose of creating back ups for burning to dvd. Created on an unused part of /hda using diskdrake, said yes to write fstab and then shutdown and left the house.(I don't leave electrical equipment on when I'm out) Later tried to boot and failed miserably due to fstab trying to mount the new partition - which I'd forgotten to formatooops! Solution, boot Mandrake Move, copy fstab from /hda to floppy,go to /floppy/fstab delete the new line which called the unformatted partition and save. Re-boot to failsafe, wait for error then create a temp mountpoint for floppy and mv /floppy/fstab /etc/fstab, reboot, success. My partner needs a cheap PC at work, a local supplier offers a base unit as below for £175 +vat - it appears just what they need, the intention is to install 9.1. The PC will be used mainly for sending/receiving e mail and occasional web browsing, I intend that they use OO for word processing. The spec is as below, can anybody alert me to any issues which could cause problems (I don't believe the onboard modem will work but that's no problem as it can be disabled in favour of their existing external modem). I only have a couple of days to decide... As to whether it will work I can't comment as it's about 30 years since I studied maths/statistics so I can't remember enough about the subject (hangs head in shame) to try to work with it. Again the output is as you described above. No surprises there. It seems that whatever I do, my scanner is recognized, but that somehow Scannerdrake fails to add it to the list of configured scanners. Every time I try again, it doesn't find any configured scanners, only new ones. Also I noticed that when I boot my machine, configuring the scanner and starting Xsane performs at a normal speed. When I try again, it takes much more time. It seems to me the hardware detection takes much longer. Is this an indication of something familiar? Marco I'm struggling now, assuming the following:- you are using .. sane-frontends version 1.0.10 -1mdk sane-backends version 1.0.11 -5mdk xsane version 0.90 -2mdk which come with 9.1 and that you have snape50.bin in your path and executable by you and that sane-find-scanner and scanimage -L correctly find your scanner it should work, this model is reported to work correctly. Have you checked that you have permissions set to allow you access to group usb ? Have you tried to access it as root - TAKE CARE ! For some time my partner's company were experiencing system crashes using Win98/2000, I persuaded them to install MD 8.0 on one lesser used PC to hopefully eliminate the problem. It didn't work as I expected, the MD PC didn't crash but sufferred from random screen freezes. As the building takes it's electricity from a sub-station shared with an industrial unit which uses fairly heavy electric motors I suspected the power supply to the building was to blame and suggested a good UPS - they didn't take up this suggestion but about a year on they had a new network installed which is protected by a UPS. Now to the point, yesterday while typing an e mail the screen froze on the standalone MD system but the recently installed network which runs through a new UPS was unaffected. About 1-2 mins later an employee noticed that the clock on the wall was running backwards. [newbie] Openoffice printing with Lexmark Z25
I have set up a friend with MD 9.0 and a Lexmark Z25 printer, the printer needs Lexmark drivers and is not compatible with CUPS and requires the use of LPR, I managed to get this set up and printing both BW Colour form other apps but I cannot get it to print using OpenOffice. A print job appears to have been accepted but the printer does nothing and nothing is in the queue, It is essential that my friend be able to open and print Word docs which is why OpenOffice was installed. A Burner could be assigned to a sector of Europe, or Australia. You get the idea. A FedEx or UPS account that's owned by Mandrakesoft could take care of the mailing charges. When the CD mailer goes out, it's just assigned to the Mandrake UPS or Fedex account. This would resolve the problem of getting corrected test distros out to the crashtesters in a minimum amount of time. --LX Hmmm, I'll think about this one a little. My first reaction is that it could work, a fellow crashtester burnt CDs for me until I got a fast connection, my only reservation at the moment is the time factor involved. This was a co-ordinated effort targetted specifically at quality testing of new releases, indeed the principle aim was to take something such as a beta release and try to break it and then report back to one Mandrake employee who then reported to the developers where appropriate - in some cases it was not appropriate, merely a case of error between chair keyboard . Since im a big newbie at linux, I have no clue whatsoever how to fix this. When I try to open my scanner configuration in the control center, it says its downloading something, and freezes up. Can someone please help me with this? What happens if you just open up XSANE without a configuration attached to it - does it detect the scanner, or still freeze up? (BTW, what kinda digi-cam ya gots?) I have a Intel Pocket PC Camera. The little digits on the camera show up soo obviously it can detect that also. And with XSANE, no matter what i do, it wont open. I call it in a terminal, and it brings up a user agreement, and I agree to it. Then a error window pops up saying it cant detect any devices whatsoever. ...ok...hmmm...you should be able to mount the camera as an actual file system...there was talk of this a week back - so you might want to dig through the messages and find the one pertaining to the USB camera... ...now with SANE/XSANE - this is strange. It appears to have already detected the scanner, but ain't doin' a thing now...what about when you reboot - are the modules loading - or does the scanner re-appear ? That directory (/home/gui/.kde/share/apps/kab) is completely empty here even though I have lots of entries under KAddressBook. Does anybody know where else the entries could be stored? In a word yes. I have a Zio USB SM reader which is RW in Windows but read only in Linux - (Pauses to plug it in, insert SM card and check that it is readable) For my convenience I created a mount point /mnt/Zio which uses /dev/sda1 as it's device, then I just go to Removable media, click on Zio and it opens /mnt/memory_card which I didn't create - it was done by the system and does not appear as Removable media. I then navigate through to mnt/memory_card/dcim/100olymp which is the naming convention used by my camera in this case and open the image, which I can then save onto the HD. I can, and have copied files over to a windows directory and saved them to SM that way. If it helps my fstab and mtab are posted below - BTW supermount works for me.
