[newbie-it] Help installazione...

2000-10-20 Per discussione Flavio Bosio

Problema;

[newbie] Monitor problems

2000-10-20 Per discussione Uliq the Butterfly

Hi all,

I've installed Mandrake 7.1 recently and during install everything went fine
except the monitor/video part.
After rebooting and running Xconfigurator i could fix the problem, but at
that moment i couldnt find any drivers for my monitor and on the standard
driver i couldnt get a screen resolution of 1024x768x8 or higher. Yesterday
i tried again and suddenly i saw the correct driver for my monitor in the
list, i just didnt see it the previous time i guess. I used DrakConf from
within KDE to change the monitor and all went well.until i started my pc
this morning and saw that all settings were returned to the original and i
couldnt even get a resolution of 800x600x8. When i change the monitor to the
correct one, the settings arent saved for some reason. Ive got a Trident
Blade3D AGP 8Mb and an Eizo Flexscan F520 monitor.
I cant run X anymore now... could someone please give me some help?

Thanx,
Uliq

Yes it does suport ATA66. I running it right now. In fact I was originally

any

  thanks in advance

This is a newbie answering but I've been where you are. Yes you can put it
in
your autostart folder. First you must make a kdelink for it which you put
in
the autostart folder. To create a kdelink on your desktop, right mouse
click/new/folder. Put in a name like imwheel.kdelink. Under execute put in
imwheel -k. Close it and then drag it into your autostart folder.

The anser to the su problem is that when su starts up it runs imwheel -k
replacing it with a imwheel.pid that su created and owns. The normal user
cannot overwrite it and thus imwheel is non functional in the user world.
To
correct this, you need to put imwheel -k in your root (the su) bash_logout
file. That causes it to kill its own imwheel.pid when it exits and thus
allows
the user to create another one that the user owns and works for him.

 I hope this helps.

Nothing in /proc is "really" a file. These are generated by the kernel when

You should leave this directory out of your backup as it will be re-created

I'm moving from Pentium 120 to AMD K6 on an Epox MVP3E Atx
motherboard and expect to just powerdown swap cards and drives
 and re-power.

I've done a motherboard/cpu swap several times, never had any
problems. Just make sure you retain current bios config for things
like drives and IO ports. ie, when you boot the new hardware the
first time, go immediately into bios and make neccessary changes
before you let linux boot.

There's no guarantees tho, so backup anything you can't afford
to lose. Now I've also swapped drives around. For that I put in
the install CD, chose 'upgrade' but with no changes/add'tl packages,
and let it make all the various config changes (eg, fstab, and
whatever). No problems, back up and running in a few minutes.

Bottom line is try it. If you have problems, try 'upgrade'. If
that doesn't solve the problems you can always re-install as a last
resort.

   It's almost assuredly a hardware/config defienciency. Try a bios
setting to change to ata/33, or simply replace the ata/66 IDE cable with
an ata/33 cable and see if that doesn't solve the problem. I suspect
Windoze works with it because it's more tolerant of marginal hardware
than Linux is. After/if that change to ata/33 works, then try going back
to ata/66 (tho it's hardly worth it IMNSHO).

IIRC, there's some problems with Abit and ata/66. To the point that
Abit even released their own Linux distro (Gentus?) to overcome it.

I am running Mandrake 7.1 and still a newbie at linux.

Trying out xfce I entered the line xscreensaver in my home xfwmrc. The
xscreensaver worked just fine.

Now all of a sudden it no longer starts when re-loging into xfce. The line
is
still there, but the daemon has to be "restarted" from within xfce.

(Trying to change something else, I had used "Drakeconfig" but I am sure I
just looked around and did not change anything.)

Any idea where I should start looking? Any log that might show what has
changed? I do not think this has anything to do with the Drakeconfig

mentioned above.

Re: [newbie] where are the cooker iso s?

2000-10-20 Per discussione pablito

Does anyone know any site that has iso files for the latest cooker? The
linuxberg site doesn't, contrary to what Mandrake says. Trying to download
all the files individually is a pain even with a fast connection.

By the way, in 7.2 Beta 3 kpackage seems to be broken. The loss of all the
kde themes was sad but a broken kpackage is a real inconvenience.

[newbie] Install: 7.1 problems fixed in 7.2 beta 3

2000-10-20 Per discussione pablito

I could not install 7.1 unless I copied the cd to the hard disk and made a
boot diskette for installing from a hard disk partition. With 7.2 beta 3
that has all been fixed and the installation program works just fine off the
cds. Those who have problems with installing 7.1 might just go and get the
beta 7.2 and use that instead. There are some broken links and annoying
problems with the beta (most serious bug I've come across is a
non-functioning kpackage) but at least it's easy to install!

www.lsl.com sells already-made beta cds for a few dollars a disk plus
postage, if you don't have a fast line to download the iso files.

   You can use RPMDrake.
This will list all the programs available including those on CDs 3and 4.
It will tell you which are installed and allow you to install any additional

[newbie] DHCP

2000-10-20 Per discussione dom972

Hi !

I have Road Runner at home but am not able to configure it.
My Network Adapter is working.
In order to configure DHCP, the only thing I did is enabling the DHCP
option when I installed mandrake 7.1.
I guess that is not enough to make Road Runner work (Indeed it
doesn't...)

I went through the DHCP mini-how-to but it is not updated enough and
doesn't deal with the Mandrake 7.1 configuration.
There is no way to find a complete documentation on how to do it under
Mandrake 7.1...
And as I am a pure newbie (I've been using Linux for only 2 weeks...), I
really do not know what to do. Moreover, I don't really understand the
Networking jargon...

Then it would be really great if someone could guide me step-by-step
through the process of making DHCP work under Mandrake...

Sorry about that... I am just desperate and I still absolutely do not want
to go back to the Microsoft world...

Thanks a lot for your understanding and help!

hello y'all, im a super newbie at this.. i recently downloaded mandrake 7.1
and was trying to install it earlier but then the installation screens were
messed up. all i could see from the messages were "ok" and "cancel" and the
rest of the borders of the dialogue boxes. these buttons and the borders
were in light blue and the rest of the entire screen was dark blue including
the options to choose from..

im running a p3700,128mb ram, and 19gb hd, 7 gs of which have windows98
installed, and the other 12 has redhat7.0. i waned ti install mandrake over
the redhat partition without erasing it since teh installation would format
the partition anyway right?

i guess it would be highly unlikely that the linux partition is causing all
the messy installation messages, so im figurin' i got a corrupted download
or something. that's the best guess i can make right now since i encountered
a problem as well making a boot disk from the cd's dosutils.

well guesses are all i can make and i dunno much about this. anyone with a
more scientific explanation?(and solution?) thanks!

I think I said that Gary. But what seems to get to people coming from a
world of commercial-only software is that there are real reasons why code
in development should run more poorly than it would if all the extra code

expect it to be slow and big" they say "Ooo yuck, this is a horrible

has already named it, and uses it, I had to rename the existing Mail

This will let Exmh make its Mail directory, and if you don't like it,
you can delete it later, and rename Mail1 back to Mail for your Kmail.
With this minor change, you will be off and running.

Isn't there a way to configure either kmail or exmh to use a differenlt names

Re: [newbie] Monitor problems

2000-10-20 Per discussione Rod Baxter

I would certainly turn the monitor off as monitors are quite a fire risk. I
leave my server at home running all the time behind a UPS and have never had
hardware problems. But the monitor goes off.

If I remember correctly from years ago, the problem with turning equipment
on and off all the time is that the components go through heat stress and
the heat causes expansion of course. In many cases its the mechanical
expansion which does the damage. These days PC's run a lot cooler (the
components that is) and I suspect the gains in leaving the machines on is
minimal. Is the fan in your power supply a good ball race fan? If its the
usual sleeve variety it will sieze eventually and will, according to Murphy,
do it in the middle of the night and cook you machine.

In defense of leaving the machine on (particularly if you're running a
stable system like Linux), other than your monitor, a computer doesn't
use
all that much electricity. A 200W power supply takes about as much as
3-4
light bulbs, right? How many lights do you leave on in the house?
Might be
worth it to shut off the monitor and leave the box on.

In support of what you're saying, that 200W is the potential output
capacity of that device, not its power usage. The machine is actually
using less than that or the power supply would be inadequate.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried Norton Ghost 6.5 both through the
parallel cable and locally after hooking up my "master" drive as a slave to
the PC where I was wanting to copy the master drive to. Neither worked.

What did work great though was the Linux dd program. I created my master
Mandrake Linux drive and then connected it to the PC that I wanted to copy
to as a slave drive. The PC thus had the master drive (hda) and the drive
that I wanted to copy from as the slave (hdb). The following command
duplicated the slave drive to the master drive:

dd if=/dev/hdb of=/dev/hda bs=512

Worked great! In fact, I got the idea from an article in Info Security
magazine, which rated the "free" dd program higher than Norton Ghost and
others.

Hi,

What I would do is like this (assuming all PCs are the same):

1) Install Windows and Ghost on a pc (nothing else).

2) take HD from a PC with MK installed and connect it as the second HD to
the win machine.

3) create an image of it and store on the win HD.

4) replace LM HD with a clean one from another machine and write the stored
MK image on it.

5) repeat the procedure required number of times--you have exacty the same
MK configuration installed on all your computers but one.

If you can't install win, you can use DOS or whatever else--i don't have
expirience with norton ghost, but it needs dos on a floppy you run it,
anyway?

Hope it helps.

[newbie] Mandrake 7.2 AND 1.NVIDIA drivers 2. Matlab

2000-10-20 Per discussione Burak Acar

Hi all,
I have 2 questions:
I have recently installed Mandrake 7.2 Beta, which seemed to be a
necessity for XFree86 to operate properly with NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS card.I
was unable to run XFree86 with Mandrake 7.1. I had to install lots of
things extra. Anyway, 7.2 sees GeForce2 card and I have a running
XFree86. The problems:

1. NVIDIA provides kernel and GLX drivers for its cards. I was able to
install them in 7.1. (In fact, the installation was problemless however,
the results were not satisfactory. I was unable to run an openGL program
which was my main aim. Then I decided to move to 7.2). Well, I cannot
install these drivers in 7.2. It gives some errors concerning the
agpgart.o. And the 'insmod NVdriver' fails.
Has anyone managed to install NVIDIA drivers to Mandrake 7.2?

2. I had installed Matlab R11 to 7.1 and it was runing OK. I installed it
to 7.2 (I had to add a library manually because matlab insisted on
having libdl.so.1, whereas 7.2 has libdl.so.2 )and now only the root can
run it, if a user tries to run it, it dumps core and gives segmentation
fault.
Does anyone have any idea?

Thanks

and with the notion of buying test betas. And though it might seem dumb, a
lot of people don't know just what a beta is and some kind of blatant message
is also a good idea. -Gary-

Not to change the subject back to what started all of this, but, I
pulled up Mozilla and did not initiate the mail feature, just started
browsing. It reacted considerably faster than before. When I started
mail the browser immediately slowed down to where it would take 20
seconds to a minute or more to load a web page. The fonts etc are so
much better than the Netscape fonts (which I can not get to change) that
I think I will use Mozilla to browse and Netscape for mail, until I can
figure out how to get Kmail to work without crashing. So to make a long
story short, Larry was right the mail feature is the goo that slows
everything down.

Zip drives will be recognized but won't activate automatically, at least
not in 7.1. Try the helpful hints on "
http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/hardware/mountzip.html " That
should get your zip drive mounted, and the last part tells you how to
put an icon on the desktop so you can point and click.

[newbie] Q about the 7.2 beta

2000-10-20 Per discussione Michael Lueck

Someone with the beta who wants to dual boot with the FAT32 file system. Have
they updated the GUI FDisk during install such that you can specify that the
extended partition is type F vs the usual type 5? It is annoying to have to do
the complete install to be able to get to the text mode fdisk and flip the type
on partition 5 from 5 to F. (In the past the GUI FDisk did not show you
partition 5) If this is still the case, could someone send in a req. I don't
know when I will have the time to wait for the ISO image to download... but
hopefully I will.

Thanks!

I suppose you're right Gary but providing a c compiler without printf

Are you using the icon on the desktop? Maybe the auto-mount ain't workin'
quite right.

In terminal, su to root, and type:

mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

then cd to /mnt/floppy and ls.

If it stalls in terminal there's something else wrong. But if it works, then
your auto-mount is broken.

Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7.2 AND 1.NVIDIA drivers 2. Matlab

On Saturday 21 October 2000 04:25, you scribled down on a piece of
electronic paper:

Recompile your kernel and enable "/dev/agpart (AGP Support)" under the
"Character devices" section. This should fix the problem :)

I'm myself running XFree 4.0.1 Mandrake 7.2beta3 on a card with the NVidia
GeForce2 chipset (asus v7700) and using the NVidia kernel and GLX drivers,
and I get better results here with Quake3 and Heavy Gear2 then I get when I
boot into windows and try there (with the latest NVidia windows drivers).

[newbie] Graphic

2000-10-20 Per discussione Kevin A Sadler

Is this where I ask questions. If so here goes.
System Pentium 233MMX, 64 Mb RAM.
Graphic card Legend 64Mi+, which uses ArkLogic Ark2000PV
(generic). Res.(autoselect) 256 colors(8 bits)@ 1024 x
768.
Monitor. High Frequency SVGA 1024 x 768 @ 70
hz.
Installed Linux-Mandrake, eventually got the Vid Cd accepted,
and it ran beautifully for two days. It is on a PC with dual boot (w98) but on
its own HD. Partitions were autoselected.
Yesterday I booted up, logged in, put startx in and blammo a
screen about the size of my room. What I was able to see was only the bottom two
buttons in the corner of the window. That area occupied the entire screen. I
cannot scroll and it was very, very difficult to get to log out and shut down.
So I installed the lot again and gotexactly the same result. Today I
reinstalled, same result.
How the dickins do I reduce the screen size to fit into my
desktop. Text is working OK so can I adjust things thru there ?

[newbie] POP3 Mail Server

I am having a problem with my POP3 mail
server. I am able to send and receive mail from my Linux box just
fine. The problem is when I am at another location using a client such as
Outlook express I am able to Recieve mail OK but when I try to send mail I get
an error message saying "User 'mike' rejected by the server". I am sure
Outlook is configured correctly. I also tried netscape and got a very
similar error message. To me it seems like the problem is a configuration
with the mail server.

Here is some info: I have a domain name
registered to my IP. I am running mandrake 7.1. I am using Postfix
for SMTP and Qpopper for POP3.

You people have been really great in the
past. If anyone can help me or give me some advice I would greatly
appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

The Classpath statements are all
one line. I tried putting the path
for 1.1.8 here and
I have pointed to it under Java
Setup in Book Marks. When neither
of these worked, I
downloaded JRE 1.1.7 and installed
it. Then tried the same game
plan. Point to it under
setup, not go. Put the path in the
javarc file and point to it again
in setup, still no go.

The current path for 1.1.7 is:

/usr/jre117_v3/bin/i586/green_threads/jre

Can someone help me on this?

Thank you.

Re: [newbie] Install problems

Dennise,
After LM7.0 was installed I switched my drive up to ATA/66 mode and it
worked just fine with Mandrake. I understand that there may be problems when
installing and using /66 mode, and with Promise controller cards (which
require a patch if I recall what I read in newbie correctly). -Gary-

Does LM 7.1 fully support ATA66? I seem to remember something about 7.2
would but can't recall where or when, I'm getting old and crotchetty.
 Somebody know about ATA66?

Do you have a firewall script on your machine? this would be using ipchains.

The only problem here is if you wanted to block certain workgroups and not
other, you can't do that through firewalling unless you have an ip network
set up and you have divided the workgroups into IP subnets. Then you would
allow/disallow according to subnet.

The way to allow individual workgroups access o a linux server through SMB
protocol is to set the linux box up as a Samab server. Then you would set
Samba to restrict logins.

under mandrake linux is there a way to block workgroups
in the firewall especially in the netbios sharing area
on ports 137-139 tcp and udp
thankyou

Re: [newbie] mandrake 7.1 vs sound

 hello

 i am a newbie and i have a problem.

i have a cmi 8330 cs sound card which is supported by linux, but
the problem i am running into is that i can not get any sound out
of my system. i go to the configuration program and get errors,
(which i do not understand) i have tried to change the settings for
the card and still keep getting the errors. i know that it sees the
card and states what kind of card it is i have also enabled sound
for the x desktop, but alas, no sound. is there something else i
need to do, something i need to download. (i.e. css) if there is,
what it tar and gunzip and where do i get them if this is what i
 need.

I had problems getting my card to work too, not surprising in my case
since it was a cheap Soundblaster clone ("Highscreen Sound Boostar").
It's supported according to the Linux hardware compatability list
(not Mandrake's shorter list). There's no special driver for it
though, you have to use the AD1816 driver (or something similar).

I found two programs on LM 7.0 for configuring the sound card,
"soundconfig" by Mandrake and "sndconfig" by RedHat. The latter had a
longer list of drivers, so you might want to check that. There's also
"lothar" under "hardware configuration" in DrakConf, but it didn't
recognize my card and was of no further help.

My soundcard is plug and play but isn't recognized as such by
sndconfig, whereas soundconfig didn't seem to care. I got it working
nevertheless by entering suitable values for addresses, IRQs and DMA
channels (these can be discovered under Win95 by selecting "This
computer", right-clicking and choosing properties, then selecting the
second tab for hardware components (Apparaatbeheer on my Dutch
system).

I got my soundcard more or less working by using the Sound Blaster
driver in sndconfig. To be more precise, it was working in 8 bit mode
but not in 16 bit mode, many sounds would work, but others would just
generate heavily distorted noise. I tried to use the proper AD1816
driver but it didn't pass the sound test at first. The problem seems
to be that the card locks up if incorrect signals are sent (my
guess). In any case, restarting the computer helped, and now it's
working just fine.

In summary: try both soundconfig and sndconfig. Select the addresses,
IRQs and DMA channels Windows is using if your card isn't recognized.
If you've got the right driver and have configured it properly but it
fails the test, try rebooting.

Good luck,
John Hendrickx

please help, i really want to learn linux and try to get away from
microsoft windows as much as i can.
 thank you

 rick

Here is what I did:

Go to the Linux-Mandrake site. Look for the link to HardDrake (LHS under
the curly-haired penguin). Download the 3 detect-xxx files and
HardDrake. You will also need to go to the LM RPM's and get the alsa
RPM. Install all of the above as root - these are all newer than the
ones on the LM7.1 CD. Then run HardDrake, click on the sound card, etc.
It worked well for me. Also turn the volume down a bit, since you may
have it all the way up - HD "tells" you it is installed, and that nearly
blew my speakers and eardrums out!

Subject: Re: [newbie] Monitor problems

downsides of leaving it on all the time:
heat buildup (computer is enclosed no air conditioner live in the
south *haha*)
solution -- good fans, take the cover off (that's what i do)

Not to be nitpicky or anything, but this is not always the best thing to
do as good cases have been designed to maximize airflow and heat
regulation when they are put together. In some cases the static nature
of the surrounding air with the case off will actually cause the
components, especially processors and hard drives, to become hotter than
if the case were left on.

power surge or lightning strike (tho this could do damage even if it is
turned off i suppose - just depends)
solution -- get a GOOD UPS or line filter. not one at walmart. my
first IBM system was destroyed by lightning a walmart line filter.
also protect your modem line. i have seen systems fried thru the phone
line. sometimes your modem will be a fuse protect the rest of your
system. sometimes i will not.

Even a good UPS will not protect equipment if the lightening strike is
close enough, that's why most of the surge protectors/UPS's offer
insurance on things hooked up to them. I worked at Underwriters
Laboratories for awhile in their surge suppressor division. Lightning
strikes, usually closer than three or four poles to your house will take
out electronics unless you have some type of professional lightening
arrestor installed outside your house.

downsides of turning it on / off as needed:
component failure is more likely to occure when powering up or down
note -- i don't really know how "true" this is i'm an electronic
tech i think about this it could be true, but i don't have any
research or data to support it. it does seem possible however.

I'm a little doubtful as to the claims that the on/off cycling really
does significant harm.,but a sudden 5V surge into some of the more
delicate MOS chips could possibly, maybe, kinda do some damage in the
long run. Although how many of us have seen ancient 386's and 486's
that have been around forever still chuggin along just fine?

i use to keep my system on all the time. didn't have any problems tho.
now days i keep it on a few days at a time sometimes, but due to win98
i usually don't go more that 4 days without a cold boot. i know, i
know why am i using win98. well, when linux can run Red Alert
Tiberian Sun i'll be free.

Here, here...Until I can run all of my games and get my nVidia card
running like it should under Linux, I'll have to stick with the MS beast
for the time being. Plus I just like playing with OS's...got four of
'em installed currently.
