My comment is that I would like to know what their partitioning scheme is on the system that you get, before it is wiped forevermore. Also, it does sound like a good plan, cause they will have to get all devices working before it is shipped out to you. It might be a good idea to review what modules are loaded with an lsmod b4 you wipe all the partitions. That way, if you've got something exotic, you've got a heads up on it before you go into the Mandrake installation. Not saying that LM won't autodetect everything. But the info may come in handy. [newbie] OT-Homeland Security dumps winblows

Other than the fact that after I create a file or folder in the shared folder - I can go back into and chmod 0777 file/folder...but that would be a hassle to do everytime. Thanks for the help Stephen, I should have seen that one myself but ya know sometimes ppl need to just take a break from something that is not going right and come back to it later with a fresh mind set. I don't know anything about nfs really, but I just wondered if this suggestion would help. Why not make a group for those users and make your default group to be that one? IMHO it was less about expecting Microsoft Windows preinstalled than having any OS preinstalled. That would well explain their change in attitude. [newbie] Playing LPs in Linux
Hello! I happen to have a rather largish LP collection gathering dust for almost a decade since the player broke. Now I thought it would be cool to somehow digitize it all and acquired old grammophone (is this the right word?). Connected it to my soundcard. But nothing. Wahur Having spent weeks putting LP's onto cd's i hope i can offer some tips. is the phonograph a componant to a system or is it one of those old console AM/FM/Phonograph/tape players? If it's a componant: get an amp with a phono-in jack and an audio-out or tape-out jack (these can be picked up in 2nd hand stores for cheap). Hook the phono jacks to the amp. Go to your local electronics store and get a patchcord that has a headphone type stereo jack on one end and whatever kind of jack the amp has for its audio-out jacks (usually RCA jacks). Plug the headphone jack into the line in on the sound card and the audio-out or tape-out jack on the amp. open aumix or similar mixer ap on the computer, make sure line in is selected for recording and adjust the volume level so that you can hear the phonograph playing through your computer speakers without distortion then start recording. If it's a console system, use the headphone jack (you may need an adapter if it has the 1/4 headphone jack) and a patchcord with the 1/8 stereo headphone jacks on both ends. turn the volume almost all the way down. open aumix or similar mixer ap on the computer, make sure that line-in is selected for recording and turn the line-in volume ALL THE WAY UP. Play one of the LP's and adjust the volume on the stereo so that you can hear the LP through your computer speakers without distortion. Fire up your sound recording program and have fun! btw, there are a couple of aps out there for working with LP's gramophile i think is the name of one of them. It was included in 8.2, it may be in the contribs for 9.0 or maybe even on the install cd's (haven't checked, personally) plus there are wave editors like audacity to help you work with the sound file. To my surprise, I only get an error box for my effort : Theme does not contain a .themerc nor a .theme file. and CC tells me it, could not load theme. Re: [newbie] Playing LPs in Linux
You need to use a preamp not only for boosting volume, but also for equalizing the frequency response of the vinyl player head. If you don't do it, the lower frequencies will be too low in volume, while the higher frequencies will be too loud (see for example http://www.paia.com/riaa.htm for a correct vinyl preamp frequency response) That said, if you listen to your records through the PC speaker, you probably won't notice any difference between a correctly equalized recording and one that is not... raffaele [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Tue, 28 Jan 2003 17:35:36 +0800 Franki [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: old record players need something called a preamp to boost the signal enough for an ordinary amp to pick it up... if you can send the output of the turntable to the input of a cassette deck, then you can use the cassette out to record on your pc (the cassette provides the preamp Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? No it isn't and frankly compared to ports rpm sucks ;o), don't get me wrong rpm is good enough for everyday use, but what I do like with ports is that it compiles, of course it takes longer, but it gets adapted for your own system. Takes a little while is right.. on my PII, upgrading KDE via ports takes about 14-18 hours! Of course, that's upgrading XFree86 also. compiling takes a very long time -- Anthony Abby - http://www.aplusdata.com Comic Book Community News| Web Programming Inventory and Management System | Cold Fusion PHP ASP Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? RE: [newbie] Theme Manager errors
Angus Auld brought forth, Greetings all, I have been content thus far with the default KDE theme, + a few modifications of my own thrown in, on my 9.0 system. I decided to try another theme just for kicks, so I went to Theme Manager (via KDE Control Center), and attempted to make the changes there. To my surprise, I only get an error box for my effort : Theme does not contain a .themerc nor a .theme file. and CC tells me it, could not load theme. I then tried to create a new theme of my current setup, only to be greeted by the exact same errors as already detailed. Anybody have any thoughts as to what is going on with my Theme Manager? TIA for your time/help. Best regards. --Angus * Dennis.R.Meyers replied, Not to far back in the past I used to use older themes in 8.2 by appending a k to the theme name. HTH Dennis M. *** Thanks Dennis, I'm not trying to get a new theme to load though. Well, I did try to load my current desktop setup as a new theme, but I can't even get the default themes to load into the Theme Manager. :-/ Sorry I didn't explain clearly. I get the aforementioned error when I just click on a standard theme that came with my download version 9.0. When I try to load them, I get the error, but when I check in my ~/ directory, there is a folder for that theme now present. I just tried it for the Default theme, and in ~/ there is a Default directory that contains a Default.preview.png file, and a Default.themerc file. The theme won't load in Theme Manager though, nor will any of the other standard themes. This seems kind of strange. --Angus ** I notice that I get the following in .xsession-errors when I try to load a theme: sh: line 1: cd: /home/angus/.kde/share/apps/kthememgr/Work/: No such file or directory fcntl: Bad file descriptor It is true that I don't have the /Work directory present. [newbie] SSH and FTP
I use SSH and at times when off the internal network I get disconnected as if I were packet flooding or something along those lines. One instance is where I was scrolling through the error_log file. If I am not here on the PC on the same network I can be disconnected if I scroll too fast, per say. In the same aspect, if I use FTP on this computer I'm on to send to the server (same internal network again) I can send or receive anything I want. I created a few accounts for a few friends who I had try to send up a 4 meg file. It would never complete but give an FTP error. It'll do this on send or receive. I am thinking these are related. I don't know why both would do this. It's almost as if I have some type filtering set up. I DO have a Linksys router between the computers and the ISP, but no special configuration that I know of set up on that. If anyone has ANY idea of how I can correct these things please let me know. Re: [newbie] Logitech MX700 Cordless Optical Mouse on Mandrake 9.0+?
I must ask: Is it the Logitech Cordless Elite Duo? I saw it listed as the Best Buy in last months Wired issue and have noticed it's Award Winning status. $99 gives you one reciever, a cordless optical mouse and a cordless key board. Seems like a great deal! I almost went for it except for 2 reasons: 1.) Mouse batteries. Replacing them seems like a rather expensive inconvenience. With the MX700 you get a reciever that is ALSO a charger! 2.) Accuracy. I play Counter-Strike and need not only the accuracy but stability as well. While I can manage in Counter-Strike with a standard logitech corded optical, I can not flick my mouse nor play games such as Q3 that require it for fast 180 degree turns. The MX700 seems have this under control. Still, the idea of spending $80+ on a mouse seems immoral to me.
