Ho fatto un script, l'ho chiamato /etc/ppp/ip-up.local

computer utilizzando fetchmail devi aggiungere semplicemente
al file ~/.bash_profile la seguente riga:
ifup ppp0 fetchmail ifdown ppp0

Grazie.

[newbie-it] tastiera e mouse wireless

2003-08-21 Per discussione Enrico Teotti

ciao,

Grazie e ciao!

[newbie-it] sobig?

2003-08-21 Per discussione Beppe
buon giorno gloriosa mailinglist :)
files infetti! cosa devo fare?

[newbie-it] configurazione MB su mdk 9.1

2003-08-21 Per discussione antonio
Salve,

mandato tutto a quel paese :)

Grazie,

Antonio

 Hi, Carroll,

You will probably be able (as others have mentioned lately) be able to

won't get any support from them beyond 'what happens when you type in

I use Opera which allows you to choose in their preferences.

how to login with gui and run gui apps?

I do it with my wife's computer all the time. Once connected-- just
start the program from the CL as you would do so locally.

Want to start Mozilla? Type in mozilla.

Want to start xmms? Type in xmms.

You get the picture.

In order for that to work, a couple things have to happen:

(1) the host you are connecting to has to be configured to allow X11
forwarding. This is set up in the sshd config file in /etc (sorry,
I'm having system trouble at the moment and don't have it installed,
but I think it is called sshd_config.) The default value is no,
i.e., do not allow X tunneling.

(2) you need to make your ssh connection so as to request X
forwarding. With the Linux ssh client, this is done with ssh -X -l
userid host.

I was assuming, possibly incorrectly, that they were using Mandrake on
both ends. If that is the case-- it works out of the box.

Try putting nvtv on desktop and when your've got mplayer displaying run

Will send you the file off list. think it originally came form sourceforge.

K, got it, thanks.

I tried compiling it, but it needs the pci library, which I cannot find.

Sobig.F (or any of them) can't infect a linux machine..

They may get your address from someone elses address book and sent out
emailed forged as being from you, but you can't get it yourself.

what benefit is there in scanning your emails for virus's you can't catch?

(having said that, I use postfix/amavis-new/trend filescan to do the same

Relax, get on with life. You ain't got it - unless you're running windws

If you are running windows, use this as a learning experience and wipe

Or, go to one of the anti-virus peddlars (e.g.

[newbie] Files disappear from CD

2003-08-21 Per discussione Curt Tresenriter
I have a CD with 94 (PDF) lectures on it which I've been reading.
The CD stayed in the machine (CD R/W) but when trying to look at all
the files today, the only ones that showed are the ones
I've already read.
I closed Konq and opened it through the Removable Media icon on the
desktop and clicking on CD ROM1, it showed no files.
Same with the CD R/W (CD ROM2)
Under Windoze, Explorer showed them all. Then rebooting to Linux,
they were all there again.
Finished reading another lecture and went to choose the next and
again I'm seeing only the one's I've read as if that's all that was there.
Anyone have an idea what's going on?

TIA,
Curt

as root, XFdrake should give you the ability to setup your display and
monitor, and it should last between boot ups. the way XFdrake displays
is different depending on what environment you are in when you launch
it.

There *are* other FM's of course, but you can very quickly and easily

[newbie] dillo question

2003-08-21 Per discussione Angus Auld
Greetings, I have downloaded dillo-0.7.3-1mdk.i586.rpm from Todd @
clevername.homeip.net and installed on my Mdk 9.1 system. It works fine, but I can't
seem to get the open in external browser option to appear in my right click menu.
There isn't an option as such in .dillorc, but I tried adding:
external_browser=opera, to no avail.
This version is patched to have this option, but I can't find how to enable it.

Can anyone help me out with this little problem? Any dillo users out there?
TIA.

Re: [newbie] POPFile plug

Anne,

Since we worked through this question originally, I've discovered
that you don't need the script. Instead, put the two commands on
the same line in rc.local:

cd /usr/local/bin/popfile/; popfile.pl

And that's it.

Miark

What I did was create a text file (mine was called popfilestart.sh)
 that just said

 cd /usr/local/bin/popfile/
 popfile.pl

Then in /etc/rc.d/rc.local you add a line similar to

 /home/anne/popfilestart.sh

 Done!

Check out the ROX page at http://rox.sourceforge.net/ for many more

Been intending to look at rox ever since you first mentioned it to me,

to use this patch with my dillo, but have moved up using the tabs / frames /

My advice, drop that version, forget about the external patch, and get the

I was about to reply to this, but see that HaywireMac beat me to the punch.
My brother didn't seem to have any trouble setting his DSL up. His biggest
problem is with the switch from W2K to MDK, but he's getting cussing less and
less as time goes by g. He's got a Linksys in the mix though, too (as
Haywire suggested), so it all looks like an ethernet connection to his
system.

My brother in Georgia is happily using Bellsouth DSL in Mandrake 9.1,
with speeds greater than my Verizon DSL. On the other hand, I haven't
had any outages at all in the over three years I've had DSL, and he's had
  several g.

I signed up with BellSouth DSL a year ago... when initiating service the
tech rep said that Bellsouth did not support Linux and that he would not
have gone as far as he did with me had he known I was dual booting.

Since then I have only made half hearted efforts to install the Alcatel
modem for fear of screwing up the modem and then being left out in the
 cold.

I think Mandrake 9.1 probably has much improved Alcatel DSL support.. hope
 so anyway.

Did your brother have any trouble installing the Alcatel modem?

[newbie] ATTENTION: SCO and the FTC

2003-08-21 Per discussione Stephen Kuhn
From the RedHat list: Let's get back...

-Forwarded Message-
Subject: [staph] SCO and the FTC
Date: 21 Aug 2003 09:44:59 -0400

[From a Slashdot posting]

I just got off the phone with the FTC. If everyone calls and complains
then the chances they will investigate SCO goes up. They look for
patterns. In other words, if the majority of their calls are about SCO
then they will investigate. It is time to take the Slashdot effect to
the
phones.

These are the key points to make:

-You did not purchase software from SCO
-The company that produced your software did not purchase it from SCO
-It was not marketed or packaged by SCO
-Despite this SCO is asking for $199 from home users (You) and $699 from
business for 1 CPU

They will ask for your name, phone number, address etc. That is mostly
to
verify your identity and citizenship I think.

Here is the number:

1-877-382-4357 option 4

They are nice and listen well. The lady I talked to even took the time
to
get a better understanding of what Linux is. The best quote from her
You
didn't purchase it from them and they want you to pay them? That sounds
crazy.
--
Call FTC 1-877-382-4357 opt 4
-You didn't buy from SCO
-Vendor didn't either
-They want $199 ...

Here's some information that may help. They actually asked
for
this info:

The SCO Group
355 South 520 West
Suite 100
Lindon, Utah 84042

801-765-4999 phone

The guy I spoke with was actually somewhat familiar with
what
Linux is. One of his first questions was how this company got involved
with me, which my answer was Well, that's the problem. They didn't.

He eventually asked if SCO has contacted me personally with
regard to this situation, which they have not. Don't lie to them. Be
completely truthful. At the end of the call I got a reference number,
and
he said that if SCO does contact me personally, I should call back and
let
them know.

It was very easy to do, and took about 5 minutes of my time.
The recording while I wated for the counselor to pick up the phone did
say
that the FTC does track trends in complaints. If we get enough people to
complain, something will happen. Please, take a few minutes and call!

The configure script is looking for the /bin/lex command, that file is
included in the flex package.

excerpt: The flex program generates scanners. Scanners are programs which can
recognize lexical patterns in text. Flex takes pairs of regular expressions
and C code as input and generates a C source file as output.

You need to install the development packages before you can compile
applications on your machine. You should install the flex package and any
others that the configure or compile scripts ask for.

[newbie] LONG-Machine locking up solid altsysrqsresiub no help

2003-08-21 Per discussione Terence J. Golightly
Greetings list members,

Recently, I have been having problems with my system, evolution and
opera 7.11. It has caused me to recycle the machine several times
causing corrupted files that couldn't be repaired by me. So, I saved my
home directory and reinstalled the system according to a fellow list
member's post I set up all my partitions as Reiserfs except for the
/boot that I made ext3. Originally, when I upgraded to 9.1 I wasn't
paying proper attention to the install and before I knew it.. well you
get the picture, not what I wanted.

This problem still occurs after the system reinstall and occurs when I
click on a link in opera and the machine locks up just as opera tries to
load the new page or in evolution when a strange font appears in an
email. I tried the system request key combos and got it to reboot once
in this fashion, but still didn't properly save data to disk. I just had
to do it again a couple of days ago and it corrupted /dev/hda16 which is
my /boot partition leaving 2.6% of the files/space fragmented.

I read some posts on the opera mailing list about 7.11 locking up on the
vendana font and another locking with nvidia video cards.

I am seeking comments about my system locking up and why the system
request key combo isn't working for me.

I am using:

evolution 1.4.4
opera 7.11 build 406
qt library 3.1.2

My video card is an AGP nVidia Riva TNT Model 64 generic (I forget the
the name of the vendor)

then the chances they will investigate SCO goes up.

He eventually asked if SCO has contacted me personally with
regard to this situation, which they have not. Don't lie to them. Be
completely truthful. At the end of the call I got a reference number,

It was very easy to do, and took about 5 minutes of my time.

that the FTC does track trends in complaints. If we get enough people to
complain, something will happen. Please, take a few minutes and call!

Thanks for the help, Eric.

I downloaded the newest j2re and installed it, but then LimeWire stopped
working. It required the older j2re. What a pickle !
So, I uninstalled the newest j2re and installed the other. Now I have to
uninstall Mozilla 1.4 and reinstall the version I had.
So much trouble for nothing...

I have tried gtk-gnutella but it is crazy !

Thanks.

Just out of interest how much weight does SCOs complaints outside the US?

As they seem to be charging everyone in US dollars, or is the SCO to
arrigant (like most US companies) to consider anything outside the US to
be of any importance?

From a brit who likes not having to pay for his OS

Re: [newbie] dillo question

2003-08-21 Per discussione Eric Huff
Is your rc file ~/.dillo/dillorc ?

Also, did you make sure opera is in your path?

And did you restart (or start a new) dillo after editing the rc file?

I just tried it with opera and it worked:

#external_browser=firebird_newtab
external_browser=opera

Oh, wait. The open in external browser link does not show up when you
right click a link. You have to rmb somewhere else, and it will send
the *current* url to a new browser.
Is that the problem?

eric

Greetings, I have downloaded dillo-0.7.3-1mdk.i586.rpm from Todd @
clevername.homeip.net and installed on my Mdk 9.1 system. It works
fine, but I can't seem to get the open in external browser option to
appear in my right click menu. There isn't an option as such in
.dillorc, but I tried adding: external_browser=opera, to no avail.
This version is patched to have this option, but I can't find how to
 enable it.

Can anyone help me out with this little problem? Any dillo users out
 there? TIA.

Re: [newbie] POPFile plug

2003-08-21 Per discussione Eric Huff
If you want to be able to run it for multpile users, and not have all/no
users be able to look at/configure it, Miark pointed me to the user way
of running it:

Here is what i ended up doing:

1. Installed popfile in my ~/bin dir.

2. in .bash_profile
cd /home/huff/bin/popfile
perl popfile.pl 1 .popfile.out 2.popfile.errors
cd ~/

3. in /home/huff/bin/popfile/popfile.cfg
html_port 8081
pop3_port
pop3_secure_port

I just chose 8081 cuz it's different than the default (8080 i think)
Where is some port 1024

4. Adjust your email program's pop3 port to

eric

 Anne,

Since we worked through this question originally, I've discovered
that you don't need the script. Instead, put the two commands on
 the same line in rc.local:

 cd /usr/local/bin/popfile/; popfile.pl

 And that's it.

get working xine or mplayer for DVD. I get white screen sparingly some
red or green letters. I installed driver from nvidia site and changed
driver in /etc/XF86Config-4 device section to nvidia instead of nv.
Still problem with xine and mplayer remains. What to do?

If you installed the latest Nvidia drivers, they should make the
 necessary changes automagically.

However, these are the most important entries:

 Section Device
 Identifier device1
 VendorName NVidia
 BoardName NVIDIA GeForce4 (generic)
 Driver nvidia

 and

 Section Module
 Load dbe # Double-Buffering Extension
Load v4l # Video for Linux
 Load extmod
 Load type1
 Load freetype
 Load glx # 3D layer

in particular the driver nvidia and the Load glx.

I have all these settings OK. Now I have seen starting xawtv or mplayer in the
beginning gives good normal video. However if I start xine and then go to
xawtv or mplayer, video is as bad as it was in xine. Any settings to be
changed in xine.
running mplayer I get some trial and error in vcodec decoder as given below.
=
Opening video decoder: [mpegpes] MPEG 1/2 Video passthrough
VDec: vo config request - 720 x 480 (preferred csp: Mpeg PES)
Could not find matching colorspace - retrying with -vop scale...
Opening video filter: [scale]
The selected video_out device is incompatible with this codec.
VDecoder init failed :(
Opening video decoder: [libmpeg2] MPEG 1/2 Video decoder v2.0
libmpeg2: Using MMXEXT for IDCT transform
libmpeg2: Using MMXEXT for motion compensation
VDec: vo config request - 720 x 480 (preferred csp: Planar YV12)
VDec: using Planar YV12 as output csp (no 0)
Movie-Aspect is 1.33:1 - prescaling to correct movie aspect.
VO: [xv] 720x480 = 720x540 Planar YV12 [fs]
Selected video codec: [mpeg12] vfm:libmpeg2 (MPEG 1 or 2 (libmpeg2))
===
But this is same either I directly run mplayer or after xine. But running xine
and then running mplayer even in command line doesn't produce any idea what
wrong is happening after running xine.
Further in mplayer I don't get menu of DVD as in xine. What to do to get menu
in mplayer?

Been intending to look at rox ever since you first mentioned it to me,

months ago. When I tried it tonight, though, there were quite a few
packages that it wanted to uninstall first.

Do you have IceWM installed? Were the probs with the gtk packages?

I always had that problem. Evidentily i eventually broke it, since
iceprefs doesn't run now
