since using Mandrake 6.0 and 6.1, I have been able

The "no boards found" line tells us that pnpdump
 is not seeing your card
(obviously). Your sound card has the same chip set
 as mine. I read somewhere
something about edge detection with respect to
setting up the card, so I went

 detection from "level" to
"edge". Then I was able to set up the card.

I am not a technician, and I have no training

do, is a lot of reading, and a lot of trial and
error. I think I would check
the BIOS settings to see if your (I can't remember
 the correct name) detection

I don't know if this setting
really did anything for me or not, but if the
 pnpdump utility is looking for
edge detection, and the BIOS is set to level
detection, then pnpdump may not be
able to "see" the card, hence, the "no boards
 found" line in the isapnp.conf

 someone with more know-how can

An aside..Or should I say: A peripheral issue..
I don't work with computer technology except to type lesson plans
and make instructional materials for ESL classes I teach to adults.
So, much of what I study about Unix or Linux is lost through my
lack of use of it in my daily work.
So, I wonder if there is somewhere a list of problems and solutions
for Unix or Linux, a workbook as it were. Something that presents
technical problems to the nontechnical user to help us practice what we
learn. And I am approaching 60 years of age, so I find this to be even
more necessary as my memory and learning capacities begin to slowly
shutdown.
Does anyone know of such a thing? Is anyone interested in
collaborating on creating such a thing?
By the way, I use linux as a desktop system, and I like 3% more
than Windows. All the stuff about it not being ready for prime time is
bullshit.

[newbie] a sad kmail story

1999-07-15 Per discussione Steve Winston

I notice that messages I am sending via kde mailer are piling up in the
/var/whatever/ mailbox. I get signals to this effect when I sign out of
Xwindows or when I have just booted up. Any ideas why, anyone? why
shouldn't i be able to send mail or reply to mail?

Re: [newbie] WINE

Hy, thanks for your reply.
I have Wine 990518-3mdk that comes with Mandrake 6.0.
I am confused by the wine.conf that comes with it, using mandrake
entries.
Thanks again, Steve W

 versions use a different

So I would need more information to help you.

Not sure what that last bit means- I didn't
 think there was a working
driver for reading ext2fs drives from windows, or
 that you could install
Linux on a FAT partition (apart from a UMSDOS

I can tell you that by the default install of
 Mandrake, the floppy path
is /mnt/floppy and CD-ROM is /mnt/cdrom. Other than
 that, it depends on
where you have your Windows partition(s) mounted.
 If you have only one
drive in Windows, you can comment out the D: drive
 part in wine.conf. Then,
you'll need to mount your C: drive. Wherever you
 mount it, that's what
you'll put in WINE's config file. I can't tell you
 too much more, as I've
only used WINE once or twice before, and am not
 sitting at my computer right
now. I'm sure, though, that if you poke around the
 Internet long enough,
you'll be able to find anything you might need to
 know about WINE. Some
experimentation can work wonders, too, if you're not
 sure about something.
And the great part about Linux is, unless you're
 working as root (which you
should not be) you can't hose your entire system if
 something goes really
wrong(like what happens in Windows)- just that one
 user, at the worst!
 Have fun, and good luck.

Left over from installing Win98? Maybe that is the problem. You may

nothing but a pain in the butt (each OS is on its own hd on one

Alan, I still can't get the snd card to work.
I uninstalled the old sox and sndconfig rpms. But some junk was left in

Once I downloaded the new rpms, I typed:

Is that sufficient. I know that it opened the rpm, but when I used -ql,
it said the files weren't installed. Is there another step?

I think your swap file is too big although I don't know if that affects
speed or not. The maximum is 128mb. You can make two swap files,
though. With only 64 mb of RAM and a sluggish 233 pentium, Linux
Mandrake in my computer whips right along fastfast. Maybe some
configuration problem.

I have linux on one hard drive(the master drive) and win95(the slave)
on another.
I set up lilo to let me choose between the two systems, but when I
select win95, win95 claims there is a non-system disk in the floppy
drive and then it hangs up. There isn't any non-system disk there, so
what to do? At present, I switch between the two by changing BIOS.
   I am considering this solution:
1. Reinstall linux, putting the boot stuff on the win95
hard drive. Change this drive to the master.
2. All the rest of linux goes on its own hard drive which becomes the
slave.
So, tell me somebody, will this work? I will do it when I get a copy of
Linux Mandrake 6.0.
adios, STeve W

  I downloaded SANE however,

ways: SANE 1.01 rpm and the tar

SANE does not support any parallel port scanners. I
have one too and its the main
reason why I can't remove Windows from my system.

Hy, thanks for the reply. Maybe I am putting too much of a path. I'll
try what you say.
adios, Steve W.
I can't upload my graphics to my webpage. Why?

If the graphics files reside in the SAME directory
 as the HTML files,
the IMG SRC line should not have a path on it, just
 the filename.
 Something like:

  IMG SRC=graphic.gif

should work fine. I take it that the uploading
 process DOES transfer
the graphics files to the remote machine??

I have good luck with US Robotics sporter. I use it for both Linux and
win95, each of which has its own hard drive on my computer. To use it
in Linux, I disable the plug and play in the BIOS.

I should have clarified myself. I am not
 downloading my mail using
Netscape, but rather the e-mail program that comes
 with KDE. The icon is
located on my taskbar (panel at the bottom) and
On the KDE Mail client, go to File, then open settings on the pop-up
menu. This will give you a menu. Pick the network tab. THen you can set
up your, say, pop mail account, and you can use sendmai or smtp for
sending mail as those are the choices on the menu.
