[newbie-it] configurazione MB su mdk 9.1
Salve, da un paio di giorni ho installato mandrake 9.1 sul mio pc ho avuto e tuttora ho difficolta' nell'accesso ad internet utilizzando un modem adsl speedtouch usb. Senza che io faccia niente, a volte si collega, a volte no. Il problema principale, che rende praticamente inutile l'utilizzo del sistema operativo, e' dato dal fatto che la scheda madre, ed i propri componenti (integrati) non funzionano correttamente: La scheda madre e' una asus p4s533 La scheda video e' una Sis La scheda audio e' una Sis 7012 Il video sfarfalla, come se avessi un refresh basso, dopo circa 30 di utilizzo devo staccare perche' gli occhi chiedono pieta'. La scheda audio non funziona, non viene prodotto alcun suono. Potreste darmi una mano a risolvere i miei problemi? Yep, I remembered about the suite of $PHP_ variables after I sent the email. Seems like I invariably (arf) remember something AFTER I request help. I think my brain must be wired that way... Everything seems to be working OK except I just noticed a page that is supposed to not show the banner, but does. In win2k, the PHP variable $URL was returning the name of the file for the page, and I have a structure to not display when the $URL is a certain set of values. php.ini has the global variables option turned on, so that's not the issue. Does anyone know if the variable is passed to PHP by the server or if it is strictly a PHP value? Was it an IIS varaible that's not in Apache2? Any ideas? -- A. The only thing is that the NTFS restriction he talks about is no longer there, as my system testifies! Or you can do things a little different, as I did. throw in a little of this below http://www.dewassoc.com/kbase/multiboot/linux_win2k_fix.htm and you get my method (abbreviated, read the links above, take your time, and it will be fine): Install Linux first. -- first non-standard approach! Create 1st partition, bootable, win2k (inyour case, 20 gigs if you want a clean splie), NTFS worked fine. Create all other partitions after that, including a /boot right after the win2k partition Continue installing linux.. MAKE A BOOT DISK reboot when done, install win2k reboot using boot disk in linux, find out the partition name of your boot mount (here I assume dev/hda) dd if=/dev/hda2 of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1 to create the file bootsect.lnx, and copy it to a floppy. Boot to windows Edit c:\boot.ini and add an entry for Linux: C:\bootsect.lnx=Linux Copy bootsect.lnx from floppy to c:\ Reboot. First option, from the windows boot loader, allows you to go to win2k or linux. If you go to linux, you get the standard options (Linux, secure, floppy... you know) which is a pain when you just want to get there, so you can remove the prompt altogether. Hope this helps. [newbie] Connecting to Internet
Hi everybody: I’ve just installed Mandrake Linux on my computer and it looks really cool, but I don’t know how to connect to the internet, and my IP doesn’t give help to linux users and the worst problem is that I use my computer as the server of my house and there are two other computers connected to mine, so… I need someone to help me, step by step, on how to configure my internet connection and who do I set up my computer as a server, or at least, can anybody tell me where can I read in the internet information concerning about this? OK, I have and DSL connection with external modem and I don’t know where to find my Domain Name and my DNS servers nor nothing, so I need to find all the information to connect either. And by the way, can anybody tell me how to configure my keyboard because it has an English configuration and I need to configure it to Spanish. Well, that is all. Please, help me with this ☺! Hi again: OK, I’ve downloaded the ISO files from one of the mirrors of the Mandrake Linux site, and I checked the three files with the md5sum file and everything is OK. Then I burned the three files and restart my computer with the CD that has the first Mandrake Linux file and guess what?... My computer didn’t boot from the CD. I know that my computer can boot from a CD, but it doesn’t want to boot from a CD that has an ISO file. So, what do I have to do? The file has the name: Mandrake90-cd1-inst.i586.iso What do I have to do? Do I have to change the name? Do I have to change the extension? Do I have to buy a new computer? ☺ Well, that’s the first question, now the second one. I have a HD with the following partition: C:\ File System: FAT32 Size: 15.5 GB Free Space: 6.86 GB D:\ File System: NTFSSize: 40.2 GB Free Space: 19.8 GB OK, that is just one hard disk with two partitions :). I've read somewhere that I can't do a new partition in a NTFS file system because I'm going to loose all my information :( and I really don't want this to happen. So, can I do a partition JUST in the C:\ partition? I really don't understand how partitions work, but if I can do a new partition in the C:\ partition... Do I have enough space (Free Space: 6.68 GB) to do a partition for Mandrake? Well, that is all; I hope I can do a new partition, because I will not format my computer. I read that there is a program called Partition Magic... does this program really works? Once again I will not format my computer, not because I don't want, but because I can't... My computer is the server of my house; there are 5 more computers connected to it. [newbie] What do I do with the md5sums.90 file?
Hello everybody: Ive just downloaded the ISO files of mandrake and I want to check if they are not corrupted or unusable with the md5sums.90 file, but I dont know how this is done. I went to http://www.etree.org/md5com.html and I tried to follow the instructions there but I dont understand them. In that page it says that I have to put the md5sum file and there is an md5sum file there, but it is an .exe file, and the one I downloaded is not an .exe file, and at the bottom of the page it says that I have to create an .md5 file, and well, I just dont understand. Can anybody explain to me, step by step, what do I have to do please? These are the files I downloaded: Mandrake90-cd1-inst.i586.iso Mandrake90-cd2-ext.i586.iso Mandrake90-cd3-i18n.i586.iso md5sums.90 Those are the files, without any other extension (like .exe, .zip or anything) So, do I have to rename them or what? Salve a tutti. C'è per caso qualcuno che ha installato un Licq funzionante ? Sia con Mandrake 8.0 che 8.2 (installati su tre pc diversi) non c'è verso di farlo andare. Riesco solo a lanciarlo e andare in linea, ma poi la cosa finisce lì. Ho guardato la configurazione di ICQ sotto windows e ho visto che dava: host: login.icq. com porta 5190, per cui ho provaro a cambiare di conseguenza la configurazione di Licq, ma niente da fare: una serie di messaggi incomprensibili da cui ho solo capito che non riusciva a fare la connessione. [newbie] Unable to read partition table
Thanks to all of you that answered my previous e-mail. But really the question was not correctly formulated by me, so the answers are not what i expected.My fault. Try to explain better. First let me tell you about my machine: I have two hard disks hda , hdb and the first has three partitions: hda1 (Windows XP OS initializing files) hda5(Linux native) and hda6(swap). The hdb disk has the Windows XP system and is used as a store disk. There's also a CDRW hdc and a magneto-optical drive attached toa SCSI adapter that is sda. All this is correctly mounted in /etc/fstab and my /etc/lilo.conf has the append line to emulate the ATAPI CDRW as a SCSI one. Now what happens. When i switch the machine cames the LiLO screen. I choose to boot Linux. Thenext screen is the Aurora Welcome screen with the kernel version (Mandrake 8.1) in the upper left corner of the monitor. If everything goes right next we have a lot of messages scrolling the monitor showing the hard drives, the CDRW and the Optical drive. Then Aurora goes to the graphical display and the system boots to his end, and that's all. Now what happens to me? When i reachthe welcome screen the system stops a little and instead of displaying the information about the drives it sends a message: LDP: Unable to read partition table. Then the booting goes on apparently without problems. Butwhen i am in the OS if i try (as root) to type the command "cdrecord -scanbus", instead of displayng the CDRW and the Optical drive it says: cdrecord file or directory not found; cannot open scsi driver. And that's the problem. Question? Whyit can't read the partition table?that´s the true problem; the other is a consequence of this error. I use Mandrake since version 6.0 and i never had such a problem. I think i have been a little more clear now. Can anyone help me? Thanks Antonio.

ciao a tutti i pinguini Per mia sfortuna ho deciso di effetuare l'upgare da mandrake8.0 a mandrake8.1, purtroppo oltre ad avere tutta una serie di errori in fase di boot che prima non avevo, ora a causa di una errata manovra in fase di setting di KDE non vedo piu' le varie icone sul mio desktop. Ma a parte questo EVVIVA LINUX in tutte lesue vesti. Il mio problema e' come salvare tutte le e-mail scaricate con kmail su qualche supporto e poi ripescarle. dopo avere reinstallato mandrake 8.1 Ho provato a salvarle come un file txt ma poi non sò più come importarle. grazie per qualsiasi aiuto Anthony

hi, i am a newbie and i am having problems installing mandrake 7.2, i did download it from the net , rigth now i am trying to install it from my hard disk but it does not work. Il defrag si limita infatti ad operare sulla partzione Windows e non tocca il Master Boot Record. Fate quindi il defrag con tranquillità! One possibility worth trying would be to boot off the rescue disk and leave it in the command line. Don't login or type anything and see if it still crashes. If it does you could be dealing with a dodgy power supply, otherwise apart from linux config probs it may be worth checking your Ram out. If you've got 2 128Mb banks try running them individually to see if it's faulty Ram. (Also if you've got windows on the machine too try running running that to see if that does the same.) I've known overburdened or failing power supllies produce random crashes before. Especially when accessing devices such as CD drives or HD's. Have you added any new periperhals recently that are drawing power from the power supply. Thats a very uninformed opinion you are offering. Did you not see any of the reports about how much it would cost to train people to fly those airplanes? Real flight simulators cost major, major bucks, and it costs about 50k to send someone to a school that has one. I wish it was uninformed but it's not. I think the discovery of the flight manuals in the car found at the airport illustrates how basic the knowledge they had was. It dosen't cost much to learn to fly a basic plane. Sure, if you want to become a fully fledged pilot for a commercial airline it takes thousands of hours flight time and thousands of dollars. But if you simply need to know the basics a few lessons at your local school and a couple of hundred dollars would suffice. Believe me keeping a 767 in the air and doing basic guidance isn't much different to doing it in a Cessna. i.e. Pointing it at something and crashing it is easy. Landing it safely and following all the charts and guidelines is more difficult. Anyway I don't think they knew much about aviation I know commercial pilots are trained to do what hijackers want to keep situations calm and under control. I imagine the jackers asked them to fly down the coast and once near NY I suspect they removed the pilots and guided the aircraft themselves. I think this partly because of the third and fourth aircrafts didn't do the damage they potentially could have done. Based on evidence? Thats lip service, no more, designed solely to keep Afghanistan out of the line of fire. I'm not saying we should bomb them or anything, but I certainly don't believe a word of what the Taleban has to say. Call me a knee-jerk Yank if you will... I'm not taking your right to be angry away. go on be angry everyones angry. Most of the world infact. I don't think US citizens know quite how Upset, Shocked and Angry people in other parts of the world are. We're f**ing fuming! Just remember the world is watching and pretty much everyone has condemned this act. If the US gov acts too hastily it will lose some of that support. Imagine what could be done with 80%+ of the worlds governments on it's side. That's enough to turn lip service into action even if the Taleban had no intention of handing bin laden over. Secondo me l'unica cosa, con così poca memoria, è utilizzarlo per scrivere testi in ascii con vi e simili, oppure imparare *roff, tex o latex e rinunciare quindi alla composizione WYSIWYG. In questo caso mulinux può esserti utile: http://sunsite.dk/mulinux/ il tex addon contiene lyx che genera latex, un formato standard, però non credo che ti giri in modo praticabile con soli 8 MB. Altrimenti, installaci un DOS, come DR-DOS, e mettici qualche vecchio programma di word-processing grafico per DOS, che magari esporta in un formato leggibile anche dai nuovi programmi. [newbie-it] Problema com MDK8
Riposto il mio problema, la volta precedente non ho ricevuto risposte. Ho installato la MDK8 e ne sono contento funziona a meraviglia pero' si verifica uno spiacevole inconveniente, ogni volta che riavvio la macchina perdo la configurazione per il collegamento in internet e devo ogni volta riconfigurarlo. Per la precisione il collegamento avviene tramite una scheda isdn, qualcuno sa' dirmi eventualmente quùali file bisogne edittare a mano per non dover ripetere sempre la configurazione. Grazie

LILO venga cancellato da un altro sistema operativo che si installa successivamente. Si può mettere il proprio kernel in un dischetto semplicemente tramite il comando: $ cp /boot/vmlinuz /dev/fd0 Se bootando dal dischetto ottenete un messaggio di errore del tipo: request_module[block-major-8]: Root fs not mounted VFS: Cannot open root device 08:06 Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount fs on 08:06 vuol dire che il kernel non riesce a montare la partizione di root. Ad es. nel caso precedente il kernel sta tendando di montare come partizione di root /dev/sda6 (che corrisponde al codice esadecimale 806), che nel mio caso non esiste, poiché ho un HD IDE. Eppure lo stesso kernel funziona quando avviato da LILO. Perché? Perché LILO gli passa un parametro del tipo: root=/dev/hda2 ma in questo caso LILO non c'è sul dischetto, quindi occorre impostare questo parametro direttamente nel kernel al posto del valore originario (/dev/sda6 nell'esempio precedente). Per fare questo basta togliere la protezione di scrittura al dischetto e dare il comando: $ rdev /dev/fd0 /dev/hda2 E con questo il vostro semplice disco di boot di emergenza dovrebbe funzionare, altrimenti continuate a leggere. Alcune distribuzioni includono l'utility mkbootdisk, che è uno script della bash per creare facilmente un disco di boot più sofisticato ed adatto al vostro sistema: il disco viene formattato col filesystem ext2, viene creata una directory /boot nel dischetto in cui vengono copiati tutti i file necessari a lilo, tutti i file di dispositivo necessari sono creati in /dev e nella root viene copiato il kernel vmlinuz-versione, e se necessario viene creato un file initrd.img, che contiene l'immagine di un ramdisk (initrd sta per initial ramdisk) che permetterà di caricare i moduli del kernel per accedere a dischi SCSI o RAID, cosa che è necessaria solo se il filesystem di root si trova su uno di questi dischi. Infine viene installato lilo nel settore di avvio. mkbootdisk si occupa di tutti i dettagli, tra cui quello di andare a guardare nel file /etc/fstab qual'è il device corrispondente alla partizione di root e aggiungere l'opzione root=/dev/... nel file /etc/lilo.conf del dischetto. L'uso di questa utility è riservato all'utente root e l'unico argomento richiesto per creare un disco di boot nel dispositivo /dev/fd0 è il numero della versione del kernel, che ad es. si può ricavare col comando uname: Es.: # mkbootdisk --verbose `uname -r` Insert a disk in /dev/fd0. Ho Mandrake 7.2, ho ricompilato da poco il kernel 2.4.3 con il supporto per il frame buffer (ho una matrox G400) per poter usufruire di una risoluzione della console migliore . Dopo vari tentavi (ho letto i vari HOW-TO e la documentazione contenuta nel kernel) sono riuscito ad abilitare il tutto e a modificare la risoluzione (impostando la riga video=matrox:vesa:0x1BB) in grub, solo che quando faccio il boot del sistema, ad un certo punto (subito dopo Booting Aurora) mi viene restituito il seguente errore: ERROR: failed to map framebuffer device to memory: invalid argument; ERROR cannot make framebuffer object invalid argument; Qualcuno potrebbe darmi una mano? Vi ringrazio tantissimo. Ho ricompilato il Kernel da poco (uso Mandrake 7.2 con kernel 2.4.3), Quando pero' avvio il sistema con il nuovo kernel Aurora non parte ed il boot e' puramente testuale. Se avvio con il vecchio kernel, invece e' tutto ok. Qualcuno ha idea di come abilitare aurora anche per il nuovo kernel? Sapete se esiste un GRUB-HOW-TO e dove trovarlo, vorrei capire un po' il significato delle varie voci del file menu.lst, ed imparare a configurare per benino grub. Grazie a chiunque mi dia una zampa! salve a tutti sono Antonio vengo al sobo ho provato ad installare kde2.1 dai cd trovati su LinuxC numero 14 dopo aver lanciato il comando "rpm Uvh *.rpm" il processo si blocca dicendomi che la dipendenza verso Libgs++.os.2.7.2 non soddisfatta. Ho cercato di fare il liveupdate ma non trvo tale libreria nella lista dei file da scaricare. AIUTO come posso fare o dove posso trovare la libreria sopracita. grazie gi da ora a chi volesse aiutare un nuovo amate del PINGUINO. evviva il superpinguino

Esiste qualche combinazione di tasti per poter killare KDE, quando si blocca, senza resettare tutta la macchina? (Per fortuna la versione 2.0.1 va meglio della 2.0). Ciao e grazie. In generale per killare il server X ci sono 3 metodi: * Ctrl+Alt+Backspace (a meno che non sia disattivata questa possibilit in /etc/X11/XF86Config, in tal caso metti un # davanti a DontZap per attivarla) oppure * premi Ctrl+Alt+FX dove X la consolle testuale virtuale da cui avevi avviato il server X e poi Ctrl-C, pu sembrare grezzo ma funziona ;) oppure * apri una finestra di terminale digiti "ps x | more" per vedere un elenco dei processi in esecuzione. qualcuno riuscito a far funzionare questa economica scheda TV della PinnacleSys con linux? sto uscendo pazzo ho gi letto un sacco di faq e il BTTV-Mini-HOWTO e fatto un sacco di prove senza successo. uso mdk 7.2 e la riconosce e fa caricare al boot i moduli che la supportano (bttv,tuner,videodev) ma quando lancio kwintv o xtvscreen crash del sistema su schermo a righe. ho letto che bttv non accetta pi l'argomento vidmem=base perch dovrebbe capire da solo l'indirizzo del frame buffer della scheda video. Tuttavia l'auto detect pone bttv su 0xe600, mentre quando avvio la X mi dice che il frame buffer della mia scheda video inizia da 0xe540 e non ho modo di dire a bttv che il framebuffer si trova a questo indirizzo. Ho preso in rete un programma musicale (DAP) e l'ho installato seguendo le istruzioni varie. Il file binario clikkato o fatto partire da Esegui... non da segni di vita. Fatto partire da terminale invece riporta questo errore: Segmentation fault Cosa significa? Un 'Segmention fault' si verifica quando ci sono errori in un programma compilato per cui questo va a scrivere al di fuori delle zone di memoria assegnate, come ad es. quando con un puntatore in C si va fuori dello spazio di memoria allocato. Devo ricaricare il file dalla rete o devo insistere con l'installazione? ciao e grazie, Tommaso Prova a riscaricarlo e se non va, puoi provare a ricompilare i sorgenti (se sono disponibili). Se ancora non vanno, contatta l'autore del programma, eventualmente mandandogli il file di "core" che contiene una immagine del processo in memoria e permette al programmatore di risalire al problema. Dai il comando ulimit -c 100 per abilitare la generazione del file di core nel caso sia disabilitata. Ecco come l'ho fatta funzionare: uso sndconfig, un tool derivato dalla Red Hat. # rpm -ivh ~/sndconfig-0.55-3mdk.i586.rpm sox-12.16-9mdk.i586.rpm \ awesfx-0.4.3a-11mdk.i586.rpm playmidi-2.4-16mdk.i586.rpm Col comando precedente ho installato il tool di configurazione sndconfig (che si trovava sul secondo CD, mentre tutti gli altri nel primo, quindi l'ho copiato dal secondo CD nella home di root) e alcuni pacchetti dipendenti: il convertitore di file sonori SoX (Sound eXchange) l'AWE32 sound driver awesfx e il player di file MIDI playmidi Quindi ho lanciato sndconfig: # sndconfig la mia scheda non viene rilevata perch non PnP n PCI, quindi ho dovuto selezionarla manualmente dalla lista: Sound Blaster 16 A questo punto mi chiedeva di indicare I/O PORT, IRQ, DMA e MPU I/O cos come sono impostati sui ponticelli della scheda. Piuttosto che aprire il computer queste informazioni possono essere ottenute da Windows (Pannello di controllo /Sistema). Ma se non avete Windows, mano al giravite, ci vuole un attimo... ;) Nel mio caso i dati erano: I/O PORTIRQ DMA 1 DMA 2 MPU I/O 0x220 5 3 7 0x330 Il file /etc/conf.modules viene copiato in /etc/conf.modules.bak e poi in /etc/conf.modules vengono aggiunte queste linee: alias sound-slot-0 sb options sound dmabuf=1 alias midi opl3 options opl3 io=0x388 options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=3 dma16=7 mpu_io=0x330 Ho poi disinstallato i pacchetti sndconfig e awesfx che a questo punto non mi servono pi (se dovessi comprare una nuova scheda sonora li reinstallo ;) Per la stampante HP, io ho una HP WinPrinter (820CXi) che usa un linguaggio proprietario e printerdrake me l'ha riconosciuta e funziona perfettamente. Assicurati che sia installato il pacchetto cups-drivers e dipendenti che contengono molti driver, tra cui molti per la HP e lancia printerdrake. Consiglio di lasciare la partizione di swap sul disco da 1,2GB soprattutto se non hai molta memoria RAM I dischi pi sono grandi e recenti e pi sono veloci e tenere la partizione di swap sul disco da 800 significa avere minore velocit di accesso allo swap. Per modificare le partizioni oltre a diskdrake c' anche cfdisk che in modo testo ma ha tutte le funzionalit. Mi venuta questa idea di come risolvere il tuo problema della partizione /usr piena. Non ti so garantire che funzioni perch non ho mai fatto una cosa simile (ho sempre deciso il ripartizionamento durante l'installazione), comunque prima di reinstallare tutto probabilmente non ti costa molto provare. Smonti la partizione di swap di 80 Mb sul disco da 800 usando il comando swapoff (man swapoff). Vedi il file /etc/fstab per vedere come si chiama la partizione. Studiati il formato di questo file (man fstab) perch dovrai modificarlo per dire quali partizioni montare e dove. Poi copi tutto il contenuto delle directory di /usr dal disco da 800 dentro /home con cp (con l'opzione -R) dove sicuramente credo hai molto spazio libero. Poi smonti /usr sul disco da 800 (con umount) e fai un',unica partizione di quelle che prima erano montate su /usr e /swap. La partizione montata sotto /home la smonti e la fai montare come /usr, mentre la nuova partizione la formatti con l'ext2, la monti sotto /home e ci sposti tutto il contenuto della vecchia /home (ora in /usr) tranne le directory che erano parte di /usr che restano nella partizione da 1090 Mb. In questo modo hai eliminato la swap dal disco lento da 800 Mb e dovresti avere: nel disco da 800 Mb / 384 Mb /home 344+80 Mb nel disco da 1,2GB /usr1090 Mb swap129 Mb che sicuramente pi ragionevole. non riesco a configurare la mia scheda sonora (una vecchia Sound Blaster 16 bit che con Red Hat 6.2 funzionava alla perfezione). Ho provato con sndconfig incluso in Mandrake, messo gli IRQ, DMA, ecc.. giusti ma non riesco a caricare il modulo all'avvio... mi d errore come se gli IRQ fossero sbagliati... eppure lo stesso tool con la Red Hat funzionava. Vorrei provare con sounddrake, ma non ce l'ho installato e non riesco a capire quale RPM lo contiene. Qualcuno potrebbe dirmi il path di sounddrake? Dovreste vederlo andando dal desktop KDE su DrakConf/Hardware Configuration/ Option/Probing Options/Soundcards. grazie

ti consiglio di passare a mandrake 7.2 (su linuxc prossimo 2 cd) dentro c'è kisdn (se non sbaglio ci dovrebbe essere anche nella 7.1) é un prog che ti configura, con non poche difficoltà, la schedina e cura il collegamento, non tentare di usare kppp che è tempo perso ;-) NatureHo già scritto ma non ho avuto risposta, alloa riprovo e spero che questa volta qualcuno mi possa aiutare. Dear friends, I am trying to install the plustek9630.0.30 driver with SANE following your HOWTOO, but after I had bd been succeed in the commands (1); (2); (3) (4) in this step I got a little bit confused, because when I unpakced the plustek9630.0.30 in the /usr/local/temp directory, it had already criated a /backend directory there. Must I need to create another directory /backend in order to put all the stuff there including the plustek_driver sub directory? Well, I tryied in both ways: (a) just placing all the stuff in the /backend idrectory that was created when I unpack plustek.tar.gz and in the other form when (b) I first criated a /backend directory in /usr/local/temp, or it be, I untar the plustek.tar.gz inside /usr/local/temp/backend directory. After that I was succeed in the steps (4); (5) in (6) another doubt: how must I use the --disable-shared option? CFLAGS="-g -O -Wall" ./configure --disable-shared ? or CFLAGS="-g -O -Wall --disable-shared" ./configure ? Anyway, I used just CFLAGS="-g -O -Wall" ./configure Following the script in the step (8) I got succeed from (8a) until (8d) (I skip the (8b) step because I was already as su. Create a file called network in the directory /etc/sysconfig and re-configure your system, it will work regards I have IP Masquerading set up. My linux box @ 192.168.1.1 is the server, and my windows machines can go on the internet. I just had to set the gateway to 192.168.1.1 and the DNS host to linux (the name of the linux machine) and then i put in the DNS servers that were given to me by my isp. The windows machines work fine for internet, mail, ICQ and stuff like that. On my linux machine, i can't go anywhere in netscape, it says "no route to host". I can ping the DNS server from my linux machine, but nothing else. From the windows machines, i can ping anything. Look, I had the same messages of errors you had. I solved it using the path
directory under ' ' , and in the linux format, like so:
wine '/win98_C/Program files/Paint shop pro/Psp.exe'
With me it works. But when I tryied to run the webster dictionairy, it failled,
because it asked me for the instalation disk... I inserted the instalation disk
but it fails to work... :o(

Look, I don know why when my Mandrake 7.0 starts the X section, it prompts to me two icons of penguins... The root icon and the icon of a girl. [newbie] HELP!! THE INSTALLATION DON'T WORK
PLEASE I just bought the MANDRAKE 7.0 and when the installation begins he does't recognizes my mouse. I can let the installation go on because I can select some things using TAB ( like chose the partition in what linux will be installed ). My computer is a K6, 124Mb ram, 1 HD 1GB Maxtor ( where the linux will be installed ), and 1 quantum fireball 2.4 GB. Windows and other linux versions recognizes the maouse at com1 /dev/tty0 as a old logitech serial mouse, but my MANDRAKE 7.0 don't, even when I choose the expert option of installation and set the com1 as used by a mouse. PPPLLLEEEAAAEEE how can I fix this??? [newbie] Problems with Xwindows/KDE
When I installed the Mandrake 6.0 (Portuguese version) in my computer, I have no problems with it. But today I have done un upgrade to 6.1 and what wasn't my surprize when it started KDE shell and I didin't see the text in the text boxes under the icons. Even in the first box (in the startup). I don't know what is happening. May someone help me? My video card is a Diamond Stealth A50 with 8Mb of RAM and my monitor is a AOC Spectrum 5E. Despite it sais em that I may use 32 with 1078x7xx, I only get successful when I choose 24 at most. [newbie] Files on /mnt/win98
Dear Friends, I am using Mandrake 6.0 (Venus) and I have installed the StarOffice5.1 in my computer. I am having two problems. 1) When I navigate through the StarOffice explorer, I only get to reach /mnt (my point mounting files). I can't see any files under the /mnt path. When I am out of StarOffice5.1, I can to see all the directories and files under the windows98 partition. But under StarOffice, I can't. A friend mine tryied an experience. He made a link with "ln -s /mnt/win98 /win_C", and so I was able to see the files under StarOffice5.1 in the windows partitions. But when I rebooted the computer, I didn't get succeed longer. I already gave all the permissions and even as superuser (root), I can't see the files in the windows partition under StarOffice5.1. 2) I installed the jre1.1.7 in my computer and when I installed the StarOffice5.1, despite I received the message that StarOffice has reconized the Java ambient, when I open a site with aplets, I receive a message telling me that the java is not installed.
