How to shrink ntuser.dat

2001-09-13 Thread Patrick Straub

Hi everybody

Is there a way/tool to shrink ntuser.dat without deleting it?
The question came from one of our customers. He works with roaming profiles
and with the time the ntuser.dat file gets very big, and the workstations
become very slow.

Many thanks in advance.

Stu, this is Gene. I have been trying for weeks to get unsubscribe to the
newsletter. Mainly because of the so many e-mails to deal with. Most of
the information I cannot use, because I do not have NT. It sounds as though
they have a multitude of problems with NT. Mercy. I have had as many as
1000 e-mails to deal with some days. I enjoy reading them, and learning,
but it is too much some days. Thanks for your help

Hello Gene,

The problem is that you are not subscribed to the list with this

Then you can unsubscribe over here:

here are the answers to some of your questions ect.

http://lawcrawler.findlaw.com/scripts/lc.pl?entry=+e-mail+privacy+&sites=all
But with respect to an employer’s privately-owned internal e-mail system,
the prevalent view among lawyers is that employees do not have rights of
privacy in e-mail communications they send and receive on their employer’s
system unless the employer acts in a manner giving rise to a reasonable
expectation of privacy.

there have been case's that have went to court in Jacksonville, fl. where a
long time "over 12 yrs"well known city employee was fired!! for having
certain things in her mail folder on a city system!!

In the U.S., e-mail (and voice mail) is the property of the employer. There
can be no expectation of privacy. At this point, it is more of a matter of
company policy. For example, a manager would probably be able to
read his/her subordinate's e-mail but could probably have the subordinate
censured for reading his/her e-mail.

As ISP's anything we uncover in the normal course of system administration
can be acted upon (i.e. turned into authorities.) However, once we contact
law enforcement, we are in a sense deputized and cannot look into their
e-mail accounts without a search warrant.

and have the user put all documents, temporary desktop stuff there.

RE: Tovoli?

2001-09-13 Thread Miley, Dan

about 2 years ago, We had a quote for tivoli installation here on our not to
large network, and the price was in the 7 figure range.

2 tivoli techs came to install a test (one SNA, one print, one app server,
and a couple workstations, as well as the tivoli servers). after 2 weeks,
they had the product up and doing no work. Just up and running. There were
issues, many issues. I think more confusing than useful is a good
description.

now we're looking at implementing it.

At least I won't be bored.

It is *much* more than SMS--even if you only consider the
products brought out by the original startup known as Tivoli
Systems, before the merger with IBM. Since the time of the
merger (February 1996), the core products have evolved in a
number of significant ways architecturally, and offer very
significant advantages over their strong initial versions. At
the same time, there has been an increasing number of products
that are now considered part of the "Tivoli" product line. In
many cases, these new products are part of the product line only
in a marketing and not a technical sense.

While I would definitely encourage everyone interested in
managing large numbers of systems to take a look at Tivoli's web
site, I believe that many may find the web site more confusing
than useful due to the sheer number of products. As a guide,
here is the way I personally track the products offered by
Tivoli:

 Tivoli heritage products:

These are the products growing from the core vision of Tivoli
Systems. Initially aimed at simplifying life for Unix system
admins, these products have grown to cover Windows OS versions,
AS400, and IBM mainframes. Particular strengths in this group
include

   * aggressively multi-OS (most Unix, Windows*, NT*,
A400, mainframe)
   * seamless remote operations
   * detailed multi-level security model with delegation
by job function and
machine role (very analogous to OUs in Active
Directory)
   * Multi-platform GUI with a full command line
interface
   * extremely advanced installation model, one
specifically for servers and
 another for clients
   * an internal structure that allows support to perform
more detailed
 problem diagnosis and error recovery

 Requirement:
  * TCP/IP (except in a few limited circumstances)

These products include Software Distribution, Remote Control and
Inventory (making something much like but more comprehensive than
SMS), User Administration, Security Management (particularly
strong on Unix), Distributed Monitoring, and the central and
extensible error reporting console TEC. These products are all
built on the Tivoli Framework.

* Tivoli Integration Products

Many products interfaced with Tivoli through TEC only in their
first versions, bringing alerts prior to application or system
failure. Since then, they have grown tasks (think wizards that
could be applied to 100s of systems) and more detailed monitors.

Examples are Tivoli Manager for Sybase, and Tivoli Manager for MQ
Series. There are also a large number of third party products in
this area.

* Acquired Products

In the merger with IBM and in subsequent purchases of other
companies, Tivoli has acquired a number of products. These
products have generally not been reworked to take advantage of
the Framework technology, often limiting their integration to
sending information to TEC. Breaking these down:

From IBM itself: Netview, OPC, Storage Manager, Netview DM,
Global
 Sign On, and Tivoli SecureWay
 From Unison: Workload Scheduler
 From Software Artistry: Service Desk

In general, these products often retain their old installation,
security, and configuration methods--and could be products from
any software company.

I worked for Tivoli in the Austin office for three years in
support and development, and I had a wonderful chance to learn
the details inside the wonderful architecture of the Tivoli
Framework. Since that time I've been in Europe teaching Tivoli
software and consulting in the systems management arena...

RE: Voice over ip

2001-09-13 Thread Dave Wylie

We have had little or no problems with Alcatel support here in Scotland.

It seems like the French user site's pilot the beta testing and our local
support guys pop over to France for a few weeks on new release
familiarisation. We get the product about one to two months after is
production release in France. Our tech support from Alcatel in terms of the
ongoing growth of the network has been first class.

They seem to have the release rate of new release versions under control and
the (infrequent) patching requirement is a low key event and pretty well
fully automatic.

Touch wood! Our experience of the 4400 + remote shelve installations has
been and is a positive one.

that's good that they've improved. we had QC problems with patches, etc.

(I'll look on fred's workstation and see if he's got a newer version of
these files and send them, that should fix your prob)

We have had little or no problems with Alcatel support here in Scotland.

It seems like the French user site's pilot the beta testing and our local
support guys pop over to France for a few weeks on new release
familiarisation. We get the product about one to two months after is
production release in France. Our tech support from Alcatel in terms of the
ongoing growth of the network has been first class.

They seem to have the release rate of new release versions under control and
the (infrequent) patching requirement is a low key event and pretty well
fully automatic.

Touch wood! Our experience of the 4400 + remote shelve installations has
been and is a positive one.

Surely all of these are stored in the profil folders not in ntuser.dat. I
thought that ntuser.dat was a file copy of everything stored in

Hi everybody

Is there a way/tool to shrink ntuser.dat without deleting it?
The question came from one of our customers. He works with roaming profiles
and with the time the ntuser.dat file gets very big, and the workstations
become very slow.

Many thanks in advance.

RE: Security Fixes in Batch

2001-09-13 Thread Steve Kelsay

Yes. well, sortof. I had the varaible value put in quotes. When I removed the variable
and put the explicit address into each line and then enclosed it in quotes, it worked
fine.

Thanks a lot for the help!

Did you enclose the entire thing in quotes ? It might ignore the
switches if not in quotes.

Simple but had to ask...

RE: How to shrink ntuser.dat

2001-09-13 Thread Miley, Dan

so, point the profile to save all files to local temp areas or the user's
server folder.

will this replicate to each workstation the user logs into? do you have to
delete the local cached profile to clear it out, or does the smaller profile
overwright...?

if you move the (temp) file location, you'd probably have to clear the old
area manually.

something like
del "c:\%systemroot%\profiles\%username%\temporary internet files\*.*" /s /y

I think there's more info in the ZAW documentation. search
www.microsoft.com\technet for "Zero administration Workstation"

Doesn't it seem strange there's an admin manual for the ZERO administration
workstation...

BTW, any other musicians on the list?

To show those terrorists that we Americans stick together, FRIDAY
SEPTEMBER 14 is "Flags Across America." All Americans are asked to
display the American flag either in their homes or cars. Let's keep the
meaning of UNITED in "United States". Pass this onto as many people as

I got almost the same thing yesterday, but with an attachment of a prayer.
It urged everyone to send it as quickly as possible to everyone you know.
Sure sounded like a chain mail request to me. I couldn't find confirmation

In light of everything I decided not to tell my users what I thought. It's
part of the grieving process I think since we are fairly unable to help here

2001-09-13 Thread Wendell Cotton

Along the lines of "he doesn't get it - he never has and he never will . .
."

I heard Dick Gephardt say in an interview this morning that "we need to look
at a compromise between security and freedom". This is one of the same
characters who is frequently telling us how the Constitution is a "living
document", i.e. subject to his modernization and interpretation. He's not
alone in this regard - plenty of fools on both sides of the aisle think the
same way.

Benjamin Franklin said at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, "those who
are willing to sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither".

'nuff said.

RE: DIRECTORY REPLICATION

2001-09-13 Thread Phil Pettifer

If you exclude files or directories, then they will not be copied at all.
The exclusion is actually applied to the source files specified, then
mirrored at the destination.

If you wish to perform a general /MIR replication, but have robocopy NOT
delete specific subsets of the replicated files/directories from the
destination, then your script will need to move, or copy these files to
another destination outside the destination tree.

The switch /MIR is literally what it's name implies. A true MIRROR, just
not in real time. The exact mirroring happens every time your
script/command executes.

Without knowing more details about exactly what you are trying to
accomplish, that's about all I can suggest.

It seems that if you use the /XF switch, i.e "robocopy C:\source
d:\destination /mir /xf *.txt" the mirror will not copy or delete text
files from the source or destination. Of course you can replace *.txt with
any file, directory or wildcard.

Not sure it that helps or not.

NIC Load Balancing

Recently I installed a Intel Pro 100/S Dual Port NIC. Then proceeded to
configure a load balancing array consisting of the 2 ports on the Intel NIC.
Both ports where then connected to a 3Com 3300 switch.

Everything worked like expected expect, except for intermittent activity
with the printers.
Sometimes they would print other times end-user will get message like
"printer unavailable or not connected".
I tried pinging the printers IP, I would get 2/4 or 3/4 or 0/4 reply's back,
randomly.

Print Server - NT4 sp6a
Clients - NT4 sp6a
All printers are one of three types- HP 4000, 5M, 2500CM

We have the Novell Client active on the remote machines - installed and
selected at boot time.

When a remote user starts up normally, it does not see any Novell Servers,
so it goes to sleep.

When a remote connection is established, it will see that there is Novell
Traffic on the connection, and bring up your Novell Login automatically. You
then log into your tree and away you go.

Title: RE: Email content scanner/filter for exchange

We use Mail Essentials, by www.gfi.com.  It will do the blocking/filtering based on subject or message content and so far has really helped with most of the virus's.  I filter and then use mail rules to send the quarantined files to specific folders based on it's content.  That way certain stuff can go right to the trash and others I can screen.  It also lets you place your users into groups that can have different attributes.  You can select the types of attachments they can send and receive as well as control the size of the messages they can send.  It also covers anti-spam, email encryption, antivrus checking of mail, and of course disclaimers.  Unfortunately it isn't free by any means.  Yes I really like it that's why the boost.

2001-09-13 Thread Ian Kelly
Title: Message

Not a precise answer, but here are my
thoughts having worked with a mixed network in my last job:

Not sure IPX would be needed if all
your servers are Netware 5, and your network is entirely
TCP/IP
The Gateway service for Netware requires a
user (or is it Group?) called NTGATEWAY onyour Novell Box with Administrator
rights (we used NDS corporate as Netware held all user accounts)
Using the Novell client should give your
secure logins but I couldn't say where in the process you'd use it - i'd guess
after the dial in has connected successfully to your W2K box

RE: The idiocy continues!

2001-09-13 Thread Phillips, Glen

I've noticed that in amongst all the criticism of poor security at Boston
airport, no-one has suggested paying the people who operate the metal
detector screens and x-ray machines a bit more than what they currently get
(which is reported as on a par with someone who flips burgers in a diner).
With CNN reporting a second debris site about 6 miles from the crash in
Pennsylvania that lends support to the phone calls about a bomb, I think
that there should be more pressure to implement existing security properly
before adding more.

All the talk about extra security sounds more like politicians and
bureaucrats trying to grab more money for their little empires - helped
along, of course, by the security industry. Hopefully, as days go by and
things calm down, common sense will prevail.

configure a load balancing array consisting of the 2 ports on the Intel NIC.

RE: The idiocy continues!

2001-09-13 Thread Blackburn Barrett

You don't sound stupid.

There are those who would suggest limiting air travel (the freedom of
movement) to prevent something like this.

There are those who would say put cameras everywhere in airports, airplanes,
etc. (freedom of privacy) to prevent something like this.

There are those who would like to outlaw gun (right to bear arms) in order
to prevent something like this.

They want to sacrifice all the personal freedoms so they can feel more
secure. And my own personal opinion is that it is absolute lunacy to think
like that. For example. Would you be willing to allow the government to
put a camera in every room in your home in the name of state security? That
is giving up your right to personal privacy just so that you might feel more
secure.

I guess do the SQL 7 internal backup to disk and then back up the back-up
files is another way. Since I have BE SQL Agent, I would like to exploit an
alternative to back up the databases.
The reason the standalone SQL 7 computer cannot join the domain is it has an
application, Gentran for NT Server. This is a EDI mapping software from
Sterling Software and it uses MS SQL Server. I have tried to join the
computer to a domain but that cause problems to Gentran. I have talked to
Sterling about this and they advised to run Gentran in a standalone
environment.
I created a user, ediadmin, in the domain with the same username and
password in the standalone SQL 7 computer. When I logon the backup SQL 2000
member server as ediadmin, I am able to attach to the SQL7 computer in the
SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager and perform all functions to the databases in
SQL7. However, I cannot use ediadmin to attach to MS SQL Server in the
BackupExec Selection tab inside the Job Definition tab. Hence, SQL Agent in
BE won't work. BTW, all BE services and SQL Server service are logon as
ediadmin. Any suggestions?

Do you have the SQL Server 7 doing it's own backups internally? If you do,
then you don't need to back up the SQL 7 databases, just backup the backups.

Can you explain in more detail your statement about not being able to join
the domain because the main application won't work. What application. If
your SQL server is a stand alone server can you add a user with the same
name from the domain as a user on your stand alone server and give it
permission as backup operator?

Hi,
I have a MS SQL question and I understand this is not the forum for it, but
I would really appreciate if someone will help here or point me to the right
places! Here is my situation:
A standalone NT4 computer loaded with SQL 7 (can't join the domain because
the main application in this computer won't work).
A NT4 member server loaded with Veritas 8.6 and SQL 2000 for backup
operation.

I need to backup the SQL 7 databases in the standalone machine by using the
backup member server. The problem is I cannot connect to the SQL 7
databases from the member server. When I tried in the SQL 2000 Enterprise
Manager to create a new SQL Server group for the standalone computer with
SQL 7, it failed to connect by either using the Windows NT authentication or
the SQL Server authentication. What do I miss? TIA.

How to disable i8042prt keyboard in Registry?

2001-09-13 Thread Ron Perron

Can anyone advise as to whether a registry change or other type of fix is
known that will prevent the following error from continuously re-appearing
in the Event Viewer: "Event ID: 26, Source: i8042prt..."Exceeded the
allowable number of retries (configurable via the Registry)"? Have found
the registry entry pertaining to this issue. (See
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters\ResendIterations
REG_DWORD >= 0x1). Microsoft Article Q102989 contains related info.

I believe, this problem exists because there is basically no physical
keyboard attached to the device in question which is causing a hardware
operation to time out following polling, etc??? This NT4 server is being
accessed via RIB. Use of a KVM Switch is not possible...If disabling the
i8042prt driver is required, will this impact access via RIB Board which
is working fine at this moment? If I can't prevent these error messages
from being logged, can I reduce the frequency or intervals between each
message to once a day, week, etc???

Thanks..Any help will be appreciated..Ron

Have you considered buying a fire-proof safe and renting a mini-storage

Make sure the safe is data grade, ordinary fire-proof safe's won't protect

Is there anyone on this list from the NYC area sending tapes off-site for
storage. What companies are you using and are you satisfied with the service
they provide. I'm looking to store @25 DLT tapes.

Thanks.

Nothing, yet. But there are real, and arugably justifiable, fears that
our civil liberties will be sacrificed as a result of these attacks.

That is what I'm looking at for storing the previous weeks backups, I was
looking at the FireKing Media Vault, so far it appears to have the longest
rating, 1 hr.

Are you currently using a fireproof safe, if so what brand.

Thanks for your input.

What are people using for on-site storage. The most reasonably priced box
I've been able to find is the FireKing Media Vault which stores 12 DLT tapes
and is rated for 1 hour.

Thanks.

Rights", and specifically address certain freedoms our government is not
allowed to restrict. An online copy is here:

  http://www.nara.gov/exhall/charters/billrights/billrights.html

These form such a cornerstone of our political culture that all you have
to do is mention "the First Amendment" and people will know you are talking
about freedom of speech, press, and/or religion. "I plead the Fifth" is a
common expression meaning "I am not going to answer that, because it might
get me in trouble".

Whenever there is a major public criminal crisis, there are always those
who advocate restricting these rights in the name of "security" or "need".
They do not seem to understand that the worst kind of crime is that
inflicted by your own government against you.

In this case, we can expect people to claim:

  - We should punish people without a trial, or even evidence
  - We should punish people who have committed no crimes
  - We should close our borders
  - Police should be able to search anyone at any time without a warrant
  - Police should be able to monitor private communications without a
warrant

Any of the above would violate the Bill of Rights.

We
actually had a batch of sigs lock up a bunch of PCs about 18 months ago. I've
talked to Symantec via Platinum support and they tell me that they test sigs but
can not possibly duplicate all environments that sigs could be deployed in.
Also, Symantec has released sigs that reported false positives and we try to

2001-09-13 Thread Blackburn Barrett

The only problem I have is that you are then asking the Government to
provide on-site security at a private business. I know here in Fort Worth,
the DFW International Airport is a privately owned business. I am sure that
Dallas Love Field is the same way.

I think it would be a great idea if the businesses specifically asked for a
government security team to be installed, but for the government to mandate
such actions sets a dangerous precedent that I am not sure I would like to
see.

I have seen mentioned several times that the people supposedly guarding
air-travel security are minimum wage workers who have not been trained.
Many are calling for the government to take over airport security.

Myself, I think that makes sense. One of the functions of government is
to protect the people, i.e., to establish and maintain a police force. The
government already patrols roads, trains, and general property. To me, it
makes sense to extend that same protection to air travel.

Re: The idiocy continues!

2001-09-13 Thread Bartolini

With all respect to Stu and not putting in to let this thread go crazy...

We all enjoy our liberty.
We are dealing with people who do not know what liberty is. They resent our
way of life and wish to destroy it.
Defending ourselves against that type of mindset does not require a look
into a book of rules.
This is not entirely about what is right and wrong as far as a response.
This is about BASIC HUMAN SURVIVALif any of us knew that the next know
on our door would destroy us or our loved ones,
we would not waste time thinking we would act to protect ourselves.
They (who else!) are not entitled to any considerations that our
constitution may offer. It was written for us ( people who wish to abide and
live in a free society)

I am no expert on politics but maybe that has helped to put us in this
vulnerable position. I refuse to be a prisoner in my own country. I have
been and will be back on the same war torn streets of Manhattan that most of
you have been reading about. I will walk them with high expectation of
keeping our freedom.
Whatever has to be done to keep it that way is to be seen...

Security people are also provided by outside firms who got the "lowest

In other words, they got what they paid for.
