You can partition an empty disk, up until the point that there is no
'unpartitioned' space on it anymore. Without an add on tool like
partition magic, you cannot change the size of a partition once it has
been set up. Your C drive was presumably formatted with a single
partition fillinf the whole disk. DO NOT use the format option on the C
drive, because the only way XP can format the disk as standard is to
wipe it!!

 Hi:

Is it possible to partition the main HD in XP? I just
installed an 80GB HD and was able to partition that no
problem. Using the same techniques on the C (main) HD the
format option is grayed out. I have a format option in My
Computer but I'm leery of using it for fear of wiping out all
 of my programs.

 Any help appreciated

No, but it sure makes me sit up and take notice...
If that's active pixels, it's only 25% more than the S version. I
wonder if you'd actually notice that 25%?
An honest question, as I don't know.
I do know, however, that with computer (CPU) speeds, in order to make
a significant step-function change large enough for most operations to
be noticeably faster, a mere 25% won't begin to do it, and sometimes
it takes a doubling to be noticeable in everyday operations...

So, if it turns out to be significantly more expensive than the S,
with the pixel count of the CCD being the only difference, it would
make me hesitate a bit...

We'll just have to see!

It's going to be nice to have a choiice, tho', isn't it! grin It's
been a while.

I would prefer the 3MP version. You don't see any difference between a
10x15cm print from a 2MP or 3MP digicam. You will see advantages of a
4MP camera only when you make prints of 20x30cm or bigger or if you want
to make enlargements of picure parts. So 3MP are sufficient in most
times. Further more there are some disadvantages of a 4MP digicam:

- The CCD will be as small as that of the 3MP digicam. Because of this
the density of pixels will be higher, causing more noise in the
pictures.

- 4MP take longer to be processed, i.e. the camera needs longer to store
them on the memory card

- We will have to see, if the new lens is sufficient for a 4MP CCD or if
there will occur optical errors.

Cheers, Heiko

Anyway, as the Optio S is a runaway sucess before it even reaches the shops, version

Re: Black black paint

2003-02-07 Thread Dr E D F Williams
I've been thinking about chemistry.

Long ago I developed, not from first principles, but from old formulae, a
physical developer for Holograms. The idea was that if one developed the
plate with a developer that could enhance the actual interference pattern on
the plate by giving it a physical structure, it could be used as a master to
make metal replicas for pressing white light Holograms. It worked and we
were able to make very good impressions in various kinds of plastic from
nickel replicas of the Holographic plates. This was a quite different
process to that used now which utilises a photo resist. The developer, to
start with, had a dozen components. Slowly, but surely, I reduced them and
finally ended with two solutions with only four components - they were mixed
1:1 for use.
By the way, the resolution obtained was 750- 850 lines per mm.

I think the same will happen with this new black coating process. It will be
further developed and simplified until it becomes a marketable product. Two
solutions (perhaps) one to coat, the other to treat the surface. It will
never be cheap.

So it appears to be a process that would be used for metal parts in

1) The contest is for 5 flower images, so you can show a little thought
and put together a series of decent images. Any gimp can take one decent
image by accident but putting together a mini portfolio is more of a
challenge and perhaps will help show a bit of your visual style.

2) You can put whatever images you want to on your calendar if you win.
The choice of images for your calendar is up to you and not related to
the contest. You can and will be able to put an image per page on your
calendar if you win.

3) Joining usefilm.com is free.

4) Participating in the contest is free.

5) The donations have nothing to do with this contest, they are for
members who use and enjoy the site to help defray the costs of hosting a
large site. They are completely VOLUNTARY.

Hope that cleared everything up.

Filtered tap water. I found my development times increased by a half

Re: Re: XP question

2003-02-07 Thread Leonard Paris
Well, not really that simple. When you re-partition the drive, you'll have
to have enough space on your C:\ partition to hold the image that you made
of it originally. Mainly because the registry is going to look for all of
your programs in the same places they were before you repartitioned the
drive.

The only sure way is to back up all of your data and then partition and
format the drive the way that you want it. Then, you re-install all of your
software from the original disks into the partitions in which you want them.
Last, you bring back your data into the appropriate program
subdirectories, where the programs will expect to find it.

There are other ways to do this, one of which uses the Norton's Ghost
program. You install a new hard drive, of the size you desire. You
partition and format the partitions the way that you want, making the first
partition bootable.

Then you use Norton Ghost to move the applications and their data files to
the places where you want them on the other drive. Now you go into CMOS and
make the new drive the primary drive and boot from it.

You can now fdisk and format your original drive any way you want. You can
even make an image of the new drive and clone it onto the old drive, if you
wish. Then go back and reset the CMOS to boot from the old drive.

After this is done, you have the perfect backup system. Just periodically
image the old drive to the new one. If the old one fails, or is corrupted,
you can reformat it and image the new drive back to it again. Or replace
the old drive and put an image of the backup drive on it and keep right on
keepin' on.

It's a lot easier to do than it is to tell about it and new hard drives are
really very cheap. If what you have on your computer is important to you,
the machine should have two drives set up like this with a third drive
sitting on a shelf just in case one of the two operating drives should fail.

There are other ways to do all of this, this way minimizes risk and hair
tearing.

Quite easy and you have several opportunities to decide whether what the
program is about to do is actually what you want. Of course you should back
up your files first; just in case the power fails in the middle of the
operation. To do this there is another program, by the same people, called
Drive Image. This will make an exact image of your drive that can be put
back easily in case of trouble. Of course - if you just buy Drive Image and
do a backup you can then use DOS's Fdisk to re-partition your drive. You
can
then format the new partitions, make the first active and put everything
back from the image and save some money. You need to be sure that the new
partition is big enough for the image. But when I did it I merely backed up
some important files to CD and then re-partitioned the drive with PMagic.
It
went smoothly.

Hi all.
I have one S3 c/w the standard 55mm f 1.8 lens,Pentax cap,no case.
I bought this from a list member in the fall of 2001 and did not run
more than 10 rolls through it, but worked fine for me.I used
it for IR work until my SP500 was back from the shop, then i went
back to the SP 500.
I';ll also include in the package the clip on Pentax meter, with
working battery, and case.Readings were damn close to my
other cameras and proofs looked fine(to me)
Asking $60.00 US for both plus shipping.(Or make an offer if you think its too high)
I dont have bid pay or pal bill or what ever that stuff is,
so Postal or bank MO is fine,or personal cheque from North

Apparently it's very stubborn too, as 2 vigorous baths in distilled
water doesn't totally remove the gunk either.

Anyway, I was going through loads of filtered water, which is a PIA to
lug home, so I tried to use water from a Brita.

That water was *worse* than the tap water wrt gunk spots on the film.

Now I use the filtered water and give a final wipe with a film

Filtered tap water. I found my development times increased

 minute.
I presume this is because the developer has to replace the water in

I was 6 feet (2 meters) from a table lamp that I focused on.
The lamp just filled the finder [ focus ] area.
Using a wide angle lens, I was seeing a dark room with a bright lamp in the middle.
Yes with the PZ-1, the little * goes ON in the LCD display.
NO, this doesn't mean anything. The exposure doesn't change!!!
The PZ-1 says you have spot metering but you don't!
It is telling you lies!!!

With the PZ-1p, you have spot metering.
I put the K24/2.8 lens on the camera.

Re: OT Window coverings

2003-02-07 Thread Timothy Sherburne

Your window covering should work, but the true test comes from installing
the window cover, sealing the door, then standing in the darkened room with
all lights off for five minutes. During this time, your eyes will have time
to adjust to the darkness and you'll be able to see light leaks easily.
Attack ones on the window with black masking tape or electricians tape.

For my door, the foam approach didn't work well because the door in the
frame a bit too tight for regular use (the darkroom is also a 1/2 bathroom).
Instead, I installed a curtain rod over the door (on the inside of the
darkroom) and my wife made a heavy black curtain (running from floor to
ceiling) that I can cover the door with. This works perfectly for blocking
those stray photons.

Should be fine. I have one 4x8 foot window that is covered with 2
layers of black plastic and a lot of gaffers tape. It's sold by B+H as
8 mil black out cloth, but I would suppose any thick black plastic
would *probably* work. I bought some similar material from Home Depot
to cover the carpet and it looks identical.

I can print during broad daylight w/ this setup.

Whatever you end up doing, you'll need to do a test to make sure the
space is light-tight before you start printing in earnest.

You probably have some b+w printing books that explain how to do
this - you want to use the same procedure you'd use to test safelights
with a little modification.

Great! Looking forward to seeing you again. Drop Don a line at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and let him know you're coming. He will probably waive
the admission fee. I plan on bringing the Jobo Duolab so we can process E-6
while we're there.

 Camper Bill Asked...

Hey, Jerome, you coming to GFM this spring?

Thanks for asking, I almost forgot about it. It seemed too early to
discuss such things but (wow) I guess this year is progressing rather
quickly... only about 3 months away, huh?

To answer your question, yes, I plan to be there. I like the entrance fee
of the Camera Clinic *much* better g but hey, what can you do? The trip
up there last year was a good time (YES, even being *tricked* by Mark
Roberts into climbing the North Carolina equivalent of Mount Everest) and
so I definitely look forward to a repeat performance... This time I'll be
ready! This is all assuming, of course, that Cesar is still willing to
carry my tripod for me everywhere I go vbg.

The only sure way is to back up all of your data and then partition and

subdirectories, where the programs will expect to find it.

Got to agree with Len on this one, a duplicate transfer is the only way that
you can guarantee the preservation of your data. I have seen more drives/data
trashed by Partition Magic over the years than I'd care to recall.

I think you're missing some information, Peter. Is this a zoom
that you're referring to, one that zooms beyond 35 to 35mm, that
 is? g

Should have been 35-70, thanks, Fred!

g Hmmm... A 35-35mm zoom would definitely be a candidate for
Limited status, wouldn't it? g

Well, I can't help you much beyond that, though, Peter - the only
Pentax 35-70's that I'm at all familiar with are the AF 35-70/2.8
and the A 35-70/4.

WRT the bargain I got, it turns out the Super Program doesn't need a new
mount.
Those were just scratches in the pic. Picked up an AF200T for $20 today.
Nice little outfit.

But to the main point:
... tomorrow I'll fix the A135/2.8 it's for sale.
(Not a focal length I use).

Anyway, A135/2.8 K300/4 for sale.
Make me reasonable offers/trade offers.
I need to clear them out.

How do you know that stuff isn't supposed to be present when
 developing?

The blue dye that washes out is the anti halation layer, and perhaps some
sensitizing dyes. Once the film is exposed, it has done it's job and can
safely be rinsed away with a presoak.
If you think about it, the stuff soaks out of the film into the solution, so
it's not really present in the emulsion during development anyway.

Yes, it turned out pretty well in the end, although there was another
delay in getting the (un)foldable screens in place onto which I hanged
the pictures. (One of them fell to the floor and broke at the corner
of the frame, but glass reained intact.)

I got a lot of nice comments on the photos. I was quite pleased.
It's very nice to have people paying attention to your stuff and
telling you about it face to face. Many people found very specific
details that they liked, and picked out different favourites.
Since I only got them ready and hurried down to the club/restaurant,
they were kind of new to me too, in that size and framing. That was
interesting.

(Btw, earlier today I was intervied on the radio about the festival
and was also asked bout my exhibition which gave me an opportunity to
promote it.)

I still got another twelve photos to pick out. I guess it will be by
early next week.
I'll keep you updated.
