RE: XP question
You can partition an empty disk, up until the point that there is no 'unpartitioned' space on it anymore. Without an add on tool like partition magic, you cannot change the size of a partition once it has been set up. Your C drive was presumably formatted with a single partition fillinf the whole disk. Pentax Optio S (4MP Si version?)
No idea as to the validity, but the following has been lifted from dpreview: I have heard a rumor that Pentax is coming out with a 4 megapixel camera called the Pentax Optio Si. I cannot comfirm this and was wondering if anyone else has heard about this. I was going to purchase the Optio S, but when someone told me that a 4 mp version øf the same camera, with all the same features was coming out. I thought I would wait and see. Anyone heard anything?
Re: Pentax Optio S (4MP Si version?)
No, but it sure makes me sit up and take notice... If that's active pixels, it's only 25% more than the S version. I wonder if you'd actually notice that 25%? An honest question, as I don't know. I do know, however, that with computer (CPU) speeds, in order to make a significant step-function change large enough for most operations to be noticeably faster, a mere 25% won't begin to do it, and sometimes it takes a doubling to be noticeable in everyday operations... So, if it turns out to be significantly more expensive than the S, with the pixel count of the CCD being the only difference, it would make me hesitate a bit... We'll just have to see! It's going to be nice to have a choiice, tho', isn't it! grin It's been a while. keith whaley Rob Brigham wrote: No idea as to the validity, but the following has been lifted from dpreview: I have heard a rumor that Pentax is coming out with a 4 megapixel camera called the Pentax Optio Si. Hi Keith, on 07 Feb 03 you wrote in pentax.list: No, but it sure makes me sit up and take notice... If that's active pixels, it's only 25% more than the S version. I wonder if you'd actually notice that 25%? I would prefer the 3MP version. You don't see any difference between a 10x15cm print from a 2MP or 3MP digicam. You will see advantages of a 4MP camera only when you make prints of 20x30cm or bigger or if you want to make enlargements of picure parts. So 3MP are sufficient in most times. Further more there are some disadvantages of a 4MP digicam: - The CCD will be as small as that of the 3MP digicam. Because of this the density of pixels will be higher, causing more noise in the pictures. - 4MP take longer to be processed, i.e. the camera needs longer to store them on the memory card - We will have to see, if the new lens is sufficient for a 4MP CCD or if there will occur optical errors. Cheers, Heiko

Anyway, as the Optio S is a runaway sucess before it even reaches the shops, version of it with different resolutions can be taken for granted. Pål

Re: Black black paint
I've been thinking about chemistry. Long ago I developed, not from first principles, but from old formulae, a physical developer for Holograms. The idea was that if one developed the plate with a developer that could enhance the actual interference pattern on the plate by giving it a physical structure, it could be used as a master to make metal replicas for pressing white light Holograms. It worked and we were able to make very good impressions in various kinds of plastic from nickel replicas of the Holographic plates. This was a quite different process to that used now which utilises a photo resist. The developer, to start with, had a dozen components. Slowly, but surely, I reduced them and finally ended with two solutions with only four components - they were mixed 1:1 for use. By the way, the resolution obtained was 750- 850 lines per mm. I think the same will happen with this new black coating process. It will be further developed and simplified until it becomes a marketable product. Two solutions (perhaps) one to coat, the other to treat the surface. It will never be cheap. ___ Dr E D F Williams http://personal.inet.fi/cool/don.williams Author's Web Site and Photo Gallery Updated: March 30, 2002 - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, February 07, 2003 1:13 AM Subject: Re: Black black paint Thanks Robin Hood! 1) The contest is for 5 flower images, so you can show a little thought and put together a series of decent images. Any gimp can take one decent image by accident but putting together a mini portfolio is more of a challenge and perhaps will help show a bit of your visual style. 2) You can put whatever images you want to on your calendar if you win. The choice of images for your calendar is up to you and not related to the contest. You can and will be able to put an image per page on your calendar if you win. 3) Joining usefilm.com is free. 4) Participating in the contest is free. 5) The donations have nothing to do with this contest, they are for members who use and enjoy the site to help defray the costs of hosting a large site. Re: Re: XP question
Well, not really that simple. When you re-partition the drive, you'll have to have enough space on your C:\ partition to hold the image that you made of it originally. Mainly because the registry is going to look for all of your programs in the same places they were before you repartitioned the drive. The only sure way is to back up all of your data and then partition and format the drive the way that you want it. Then, you re-install all of your software from the original disks into the partitions in which you want them. Last, you bring back your data into the appropriate program subdirectories, where the programs will expect to find it. There are other ways to do this, one of which uses the Norton's Ghost program. You install a new hard drive, of the size you desire. You partition and format the partitions the way that you want, making the first partition bootable. Then you use Norton Ghost to move the applications and their data files to the places where you want them on the other drive. Now you go into CMOS and make the new drive the primary drive and boot from it. You can now fdisk and format your original drive any way you want. You can even make an image of the new drive and clone it onto the old drive, if you wish. Then go back and reset the CMOS to boot from the old drive. After this is done, you have the perfect backup system. Just periodically image the old drive to the new one. If the old one fails, or is corrupted, you can reformat it and image the new drive back to it again. Or replace the old drive and put an image of the backup drive on it and keep right on keepin' on. It's a lot easier to do than it is to tell about it and new hard drives are really very cheap. If what you have on your computer is important to you, the machine should have two drives set up like this with a third drive sitting on a shelf just in case one of the two operating drives should fail. There are other ways to do all of this, this way minimizes risk and hair tearing. Len --- From: Dr E D F Williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Re: XP question Date: Fri, 7 Feb 2003 16:15:01 +0200 Quite easy and you have several opportunities to decide whether what the program is about to do is actually what you want. Of course you should back up your files first; just in case the power fails in the middle of the operation. To do this there is another program, by the same people, called Drive Image. This will make an exact image of your drive that can be put back easily in case of trouble. Of course - if you just buy Drive Image and do a backup you can then use DOS's Fdisk to re-partition your drive. You can then format the new partitions, make the first active and put everything back from the image and save some money. You need to be sure that the new partition is big enough for the image. But when I did it I merely backed up some important files to CD and then re-partitioned the drive with PMagic. It went smoothly. ___ Dr E D F Williams http://personal.inet.fi/cool/don.williams Author's Web Site and Photo Gallery Updated: March 30, 2002 - Original Message - From: David Brooks [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, February 07, 2003 3:57 PM Subject: Re: Re: XP question Don. RE: Re: Re: [HUG] Film presoak - Cross Post
On a related note, when I moved to my current location, I noticed that I was getting water spots on my film when they dried. OT Window coverings
Hi all. I'm ready to start bathroom developing and just wondering if this will work. There is one small window about 16 x 24 that needs to be covered. Just wondering if adhering a couple of pieces of black bristol board or similar material to the window, then add soem black plastic bags over top (and turning ther out side light off) would be ok.When the outside light is off at night its quite dark out there. I have a bit of space by the door but i can foam up that no problem. Any comments app. Dave

Re: OT Window coverings
Your window covering should work, but the true test comes from installing the window cover, sealing the door, then standing in the darkened room with all lights off for five minutes. During this time, your eyes will have time to adjust to the darkness and you'll be able to see light leaks easily. Attack ones on the window with black masking tape or electricians tape. For my door, the foam approach didn't work well because the door in the frame a bit too tight for regular use (the darkroom is also a 1/2 bathroom). Instead, I installed a curtain rod over the door (on the inside of the darkroom) and my wife made a heavy black curtain (running from floor to ceiling) that I can cover the door with. This works perfectly for blocking those stray photons. t On 2/7/03 5:35 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi all. I'm ready to start bathroom developing and just wondering if this will work. Hi all, Just want to say that there will be a sort of a kick-off or preview of my exhibition tonight in a couple of hours. I'm late and pretty exhausted, but I have managed to finish 12 of the planned 24 images that finally will make the exhibition. I'm going to put up these twelve at tonight's opening concert of the ten day jazz festival I've been working on. As for the pictures (20x30 cm), well I am rather impressed. They are good, a few of them very good. Will be interesting to see or hear what people will think of them. Got to take a shower and rush off to get them on the wall. Till later, Lasse

Good to know Tom.The water up here in Dave and Brendan country is VERY hard.Fouled up a 40 gallon gas water heater in 14 months.Furnace humidifier last just one season. As i am probably only going to procces 2-3 rolls per month uuntil summer horse season,i was planning on using the bring home stuff to help eliminate as much gunk as possible. I have had to rewash a lot of negs i used in class(done in a lab) with photoflow,as they were just riddled with dust and spots. I dunk and swishbut still a few remain.Do you recomend a cleaning in photo flow AND a towel off,so to speak or just let drip dry.Its very frustrating to spend all that time with test strip etc then take the print out to look at and the first thing i see is dust .I'm reluctant to rewash a neg and chaimos it,unless the concenses is its safe. The blue dye that washes out is the anti halation layer, and perhaps some sensitizing dyes. Once the film is exposed, it has done it's job and can safely be rinsed away with a presoak. If you think about it, the stuff soaks out of the film into the solution, so it's not really present in the emulsion during development anyway. William Robb
