Alan, I meant only a little, very little irony by that sentence. Of course
Fuji is not just yet another company. In fact, their cameras of this class
are getting very attractive to me.
Oh no... that wasn't supposed to be an insult of any sort. Pls don't
misunderstand. Really. :-)

I was somewhat dissatisfied with Fuji 602 camera that one of my co-workers
has. But it seems that the newest offering improves on some areas that were
lacking in Fuji 602. Anyway, with each such announcement one has to admit
that Pentax is getting deeper and deeper into trouble.
I don't understand the 602 that much. I mean, who would pay that much for a
3MP model? For the same amount of money, I prefer G2/3/5.

Cotty, did you by any chance visit Urquhart Castle? Because I understand
there's a new visitor's center there. I was there back in 1993, did the
lake cruise and the Nessie Experience. Had a great time there. Inverness
really is a pretty little town.

Hi Amita,

Didn't actually walk around it - the boat ride went within a hundred feet
of it so we got a good view. We're certainly going back to the loch soon
so may well get a chance to visit it properly. In fact the opposite side
there's a place called Dores that I want to have a look at - areas where
one can walk along a stony beach and contemplate the monsters within ;-)

Another piece of trivia I recall about the Loch...it's deep enough for
the Empire State Building to be completely submerged in it. :)

Indeed. Brits usually equate length or depth of something with regard to
Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square, but the Empire State is obviously
much taller and so more impressive when submerged in the loch ;-)

things.

I don't understand the 602 that much. I mean, who would pay that much
for a 3MP model? For the same amount of money, I prefer G2/3/5.
This and new cameras as well have Super CCD sensor which has two light
sensitive elements per pixel. This way one is supposed to get wider
dynamic range which may make this camera rather attractive for an
educated prosumer. Otherwise, I am with you. The Fuji 700(0) that is
just announced has 6 MP CCD but can produce 12 MP images by means of
approximation. When I tried 602 at 3 MP (no
approximation/interpolation/whatever) I got only reasonable results,
no more.

What bothers me most is that Super CCD has probably 4th generation
coming up. Nikon developed their own version of CMOS for fast shooting
and Sony announced 8MP sensor if I am not mistaken. Pentax's camera is
already old even before it came out.

I still need to choose which scanner to buy grin.

Hi!

I've been reading Penta Club forums, you know grin. After all it
comes only naturally to me - Pentax and Russian grin. There I saw
for the first time this strange notion - mid range zoom lens.

Let's see -
28-70/2.8 is top of the line or flagship.
28-105/3.2-4.5 or 28-105 PZ - consumer grade, low range.
24-90/3.2-4.5 - mid range?

Does it make sense? Is indeed 24-90 is league above 28-105's and full
league below 28-70/2.8? Why only now? It seems Pentax had no so called
mid range zoom lenses before 24-90 came out...

Thanks.

I would say, that the 28-105PZ was a mid range products when it was
released. There was no 28-105 consumer lens (iirc). Today 28-105s are
much cheaper to produce (and have no PZ) so that we have the three
classses you've mentioned. In some years the 24-xxx will be much cheaper
and they will become consumer class.

One month is long time to see if D*ist is introduced. As it was mentioned
Canon can introduce new dslr which will cost no more than 1000$ and again
Pentax is off the boat. I believe that when Pentax introduce D*ist C/N can
lower the price of their D10 and D10 since so far they have made a profit
selling them. And one D*ist is still too less. Some people want higher model
and again C/N have 3 more cameras. The question is whether Pentax is able to
release 4000$ model which will be bought by at least semi-pros. If not that
be another calapse. Because few semi-pros/pros use Pentax system who can
afford to buy such cameras and here is the biggest problem. If Canon
introduce very expensive camera there are always people who buy it, for
instance sport magazines, government agencies etc. Just look when there are
any official meetings etc.
So I wonder how Pentax is going to survive, even without IS/USM, real pro
camera and only with FGZ360.

What bothers me most is that Super CCD has probably 4th generation coming
up. Nikon developed their own version of CMOS for fast shooting and Sony
announced 8MP sensor if I am not mistaken. Pentax's camera is already old
 even before it came out.

Their rather slow progress sure makes us uncomfortable. :-(

I still need to choose which scanner to buy grin.

I have been using the 1st generation Minolta Scan Elite for a year, if
that
 helps you to decide. :-)

 Yes, agreed.
Purolator is decent BUT if you're not at home they'll continually try to
deliver the package for what seems like an eternity without ever leaving a
message or calling card saying they were at your home.

Never had this happen with Purolator. They will try to deliver, and if they
fail, they leave a sticky note on the mailbox, and when the parcel gets back
to the depot, they phone and leave a message asking to arrange either
pick-up or delivery at my convenience.
They have never abandoned a parcel in front of my house, have never damaged
product being delivered, and have always been totally reliable and
reasonable with their charges.
The Post office works much the same way, except they don't phone.

I don't think they will fall into financial trouble - new digi cameras

   I know this has been done to death,and i apologize,but a quick
question.
Is it UPS or Fedex that has the ridicules broker charges when something is
shipped from
 the USA to Canada.
Saw something i like at Adorama and they ship UPS and don't even ask for
USPS etc etc.
$50.00 shipping and possible high broker fees may scare me off this
purchase.

Have you parcel shipped via any carrier other than UPS, and you will get it
faster, more reliably and for less handling fees.
Have it shipped via UPS and you had better pray you live in an honest area,
because when they deliver, they leave it on the street in front of your
house.

Yep. That's the first Canon DSLR I'd expect to see replaced, too. It
already has a (physically) larger sensor so all they really *need* to do
to beat the Nikon D2H is increase the buffer size and add wireless data
transfer. Not even sure that would justify a new model number. Upping
the pixel count to 6 meg would justify an new model designation but I
don't know if they would bother increasing the pixel count for its
intended PJ customers. I guess news photogs would always have the option
of shooting at lower resolution if they wanted to.

UPS Standard Service.
But the brokerage fee is included in UPS Express/Express Plus/Expedited.
So it would work out cheaper in going for the more expensive shipment
option! And when you have the tracking number, you can call them for
prepayment to avoid the disbursement fee.

http://www.ups.com/content/ca/en/shipping/cost/zones/customs_clearance.html

So avoid UPS Standard Service at all cost. Go with Fedex or UPS
Express/Expedited.
US Postal Service has flat $5 brokerage fee - but there is no shipment
tracking; and some may not include insurance. And this can be a concern
for expensive items.

Re: Newbie Questions

2003-07-29 Thread Christopher Lillja
William,

Sorry I tweaked you, but I stand by my assertion that making good
photographs with a Pentax camera does not depend on the exclusive use of
Pentax OEM lenses. Maybe I'm crazy, but I sure I've made good photos
with a Spotmatic with a Zeiss lens mounted. Or with an MX with a lowly
Vivitar 28/2 CF.

Your statement sounded to me just like that Canon ad in Pop Photo. The
Canon ad is marketing drivel.

***Are you that moron troll that pops up to piss me off from time to
time?

Not that I know of, but I would be happy to assume the roll if you need
someone to stand up to you with an opposing viewpoint every now and
again. Just because you have plenty of time on your hands to sit on top
of the list all day doesn't give you or your pronouncements any special
status.

***The only reason to shoot Pentax bodies is to get to use their
lenses.

Ridiculous. There are many reasons to use a Pentax - the quality of the
OEM lenses may simply be one of the best reasons. The availability of a
wide range of excellent third party lenses - especially in M42 - is
another.

***Experience of a working photographer, whether at it's best
or worst, I don't know, but my customers never had a complaint.

The experience of this working photographer has been that good
photographs can be made with any good instrument, OEM or third party, or
any combination thereof.

It was a Newbie Question William, mind the context. And I think that
newbies need third party lenses (or a substantial income) to build up a
good kit of quality primes quickly - to save themselves from cheap zoom
hell.

Here's my full signature, in case you feel I was hiding behind my
truncated Chris L. sig. Email me personally if you wish to take it off
the list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), but please refrain from calling as
I'm struggling to meet a publication deadline. As of now it's not going
well, but that has nothing to do with my cheap, prestige-challenged,
third party lenses.

Happy shooting, and good light to you.

the image quality that I have come to expect from the medium format,

easily see myself shooting digital when I need small and compact and
shooting the 67 when I need the image quality.

*ist-D Canadian price

2003-07-29 Thread Pat White
At a local shop, Kerrisdale Camera in Victoria, I was told that the *ist-D
would be available soon. This shop lists the 10D for $2499 and the D100
for $2699, bodies only. The *ist-D will be $2899, body and FAJ 18-35 lens.
All prices in Canadian dollars. Their prices on the C and N cameras seem a
little high, so the Pentax may be less at other retailers. Including the
lens at that price seems like a good idea.

Hey Pat,

I think that the price is bang on - the prices of those other bodies (10D
and D100) are the same here in Toronto.

If the Pentax is coming in at $2899 CDN vs the Canon 10D at $2499 CDN, I
would think that people outside of the Pentax camp would be hard pressed to
switch or try the *IST-D.

You're basically looking at a 1st generation digital SLR that's supposed to
be priced competitively yet is about $400 CDN (not including taxes) above
the 3rd generation competitor. With that extra $400, you could outfit
yourself with a nice flash or perhaps a nice honking sized Compact Flash
card.

the KX made much difference, since the whole shutter release
operation sounded just as loud and seemed to give the same amount of
kick when the mirror was locked up.

I just tried my KM, which I think is the same shutter as a KX - though I
could well be wrong. It's noticeably quieter than a Spotmatic F or an
ESII, while they both have lenses mounted. The KM has a trace of the
Spotmatic series ball-bearing noise at around 1/30th - after the shutter
fires, there's a noise for a second or so that sounds like a ball-bearing
race running down. Does the KX do that?

Curiously enough, without a lens, the KM is much louder than the Spot F.
This is of no practical importance, but I was interested enough to look
further, and realised that the stop-down linkages on a K mount are smaller
and move faster than those on an M42 body. So the noises they make are
higher-pitched and thus more easily muffled by the body.

Then there's the mirror movement to make more noise. An SLR is never going
to be as quiet as a rangefinder camera, simply because so much more stuff
moves around. But for really quiet you want a leaf shutter. The quietest
camera I've ever used was a Microcord twin-lens reflex, a fifties
British copy of a Rolleicord. The ping is quite high-pitched, but doesn't
travel far, and people doesn't always realise that a TLR is a camera these
days, since you don't hold it up to your eye.

Third-party zooms with full-aperture metering are easiest in Tamron, as
the Adaptall Pentax/ES mounts from the eighties will fit recent Adaptall
2 and Adaptall SP lenses, most of which are decent.

I have 17/3.5, 24/2.5 and 500/8.0 Tamrons, since they're a load easier to
come by than Pentax lenses in those focal lengths, and I can switch mounts
to use them on K-mount. The Adaptall Pentax/ES mounts are kind of scarce
these days, though. Not usually expensive, just few and far between.

If you don't insist on a zoom lens, SMC Takumars are very easy to acquire
in 28/3.5, 35/3.5 and 135/3.5, but rather scarcer in other focal lengths,
at least in the UK. I reckon Pentax probably sold as many of those three
in screw-mount days as they did of all their other lenses put together

The easiest way is to check out the codes in the Character Map
application, though it lists them in hex and you have to type them in
using decimal. Otherwise, do a Google search for Windows Character
Set or something like that and you should find plenty of resources.
Basically, you can get any character in the Windows character set by
setting Num Lock, pressing and holding the Alt key, tapping out the
ASCII Code of the character on the numeric keypad, and releasing the
Alt key.

2003-07-29 Thread David Chang-Sang
A Canon L 16-35 lens is about $1300 USD.
That's 2.8 throughout.
Compare the quality to anything close to what Pentax offers.
The closest item is a 17-28 3.5-4.5 zoom - which is $435 USD - and slower
and not as wide a range.
Or if you want to compare a similar pro Pentax lens, the closest they can
get is 20-35 F4 which is $475 USD - still slower by a full stop and not as
wide an angle of view.

Banter back and forth as you will, but having seen the quality images that
the L lenses can produce, you're not going to come close with the Pentax
range until Pentax can release a limited zoom lens series.

For everyday photos and if you don't need to pursue available light
images, then I'm sure the Pentax lenses will be just fine.

Butch, you need a guide to the Character Set you are using in Windows. Each

feature has probably now disappeared since we don't get printed guides to
software any more!

You can see the different characters by placing the following formula in an
Excel spreadsheet -
=CHAR(CELL(row,B1)-1)
starting at A1 and copying it down to A255. The cells will then display the
characters available with your character set. Similar formulae in any other
spreadsheet will do exactly the same.

 Hi;

Thanks to all who responded to the copyright symbol question I had a few
days ago. Playing around I found that different 4 digit numbers (with alt
button depressed) produce different characters. Does anyone know if there
is
a log or guide or something that lists which numbers produce which
symbols?

But, seriously, Bill,

I didn't know about your illness. Let me send my best kharma your way
(OM OMM) (that's supposed to be, like, Tibetan Buddhist
chanting or something) for a speedy recovery. Here's hoping the treatments
work their magic (glow or not).

cheers,
frank

Late next month I'll be receiving radioactive seed implants to treat

radiation will fog film? I'm thinking sitting in a dark room, pressing a

think the metal body of the camera or the metal shutter blades or the
metallic cannister would block the radiation? If so, how about using the
 Spotmatic with the fabric shutter?

Iceland seems to me to be one of the coolest places in the world. I'd
love to go there some day - and not just to meet Bjork (I know I've
mentioned her before, but she's just so cute in a very bizarre and weird
way!).

Problem with Iceland is, I've heard, that air tickets there are
incredibly expensive.

ciao,

Wouldn't Iceland be more central? Lots of photo-ops I understand...

Sounds good to me; I was trying to think of an excuse for going there
 today.
