Did you look at the photos? The baby shot is at ISO 800 and I see no sign
of excessive noise reduction. I have an old 3 Mega pixel Nikon 990 which

My only concern with noise-reduction in the camera is that it
isn't faithfully what the sensor saw. Similar to the reasons for shooting
RAW... get the processing out of the camera and onto a computer where a
better job can (potentially) be done. IIRC the D70 did noise-reduction
even in their RAW files and it had a tendency to erase stars on night
photos.

2006-08-06 Thread IVAN SHUKSTER
My name is Ivan and I live in Medicine Hat Alberta. I was a member of this list
briefly last summer.
I first began using Pentax i 1973 and bought my first one , a Spotmatic F which
I stil have, the next year. Eventually my wife and I had two Spotmatic Fs with
a bunch of lenses most of which we traded for a second SF1x. Also own a MZ5n
and picked up really cheap a A110 with three lenses. Not sure if I will ever
shot a 110 again even though do have several rolls of film, but why bother? For
the last 25 years also own a Rolleichord.
My last two camera purchases were not Pentax, a used Shen Hao 4X5 field camera
and before that a Sony PS. I still shoot film, but with my new job there was a
Hassleblad and six lenses being unused so that is what most of my BW shooting
has been of late.
We are seriously thinking of obtaining a digital SLR and having to make a
decision on brand and model. This decision is not an obvious one as although we
have three Pentax bodies and a few lenses and accessories, none of them are
expensive and other than the fisheye zoom, all are easily replaced with used
equvalents. At work I am able to use for non commerical purposes the camera and
lenses I use at work which right now is a D1X or D2H and lenses from the 12-24
DX to a 400 2.8 Nikkors and all the fast glass that Nikon makes or so it seems.
Occassionlly I borrow from friend/co-worker the D2X. That does not help my wife
however.
I can buy a Pentex DSLR and upgrade some of my lenses and keep the MZ5n or buy
a Nikon D200 (one of which I do have on order for my use at work to replace the
D1X) use some of the older slower lenses that are not used at work until we get
our own Nikkors. There are also F5 at work not being used as well as an 8X10
monorail camera I hope to try next year. Would also eventually need to buy a
Nikon film camera if went this route so although it would give me the broadest
system it would be to me them most expensive way and of course even if we buy
Pentax I still can use the Nikon myself.
Not a decision I wish to rush in as I am not much into buying and selling
cameras The only time we did change systems was from screw mount to the K
mount. Also in a position that we do not have to make the decision until next
spring as wife will need a DSLR next summer.
If we go the Pentax route it will either be the upcoming K10D or else try to
pick up a used DS/DS2 cheaply and wait for the next camera ; K1D or K20D or
whatever will come down the pipeline and from the sounds of what Pentax is
proposing it does sound positive that improved models will continue to come.
One of the reasons to go the later route is to later convert the DS to an
infrared camera. I have enjoyed and found informative the emails about the
upcoming K10D (and the speculation as well).

Not enough information. What type of files are you saving? .tif, .jpg, psd.
These also can be compressed which changes file size.

When you resized to print did you resample the file which makes a new
smaller or larger file. Or just change the PPI which does not change the
file only the printing instructions.

When you resized it, you threw away 37mb of information. If you bring it
back to the original 50mb, you will be making 37mb of information up
(interpolation).
Your best bet would be to go back to the original file and and apply the
fiddling that you did to the 17mb file to it, then burn another copy of
it.
Photoshop can be told to keep a logfile of what it does, so you don't
even need to work from memory.

You need to do your fiddling before resizing.

Generally after resizing the only thing you should need to do is a
touch of sharpening.

You should do your fiddling on a same-size copy of the original,
not a downsized copy.

Resizing the smaller file back up to 50MB will not put back the

Ivan,

Welcome back. I think you have a problem with all your optional glass.
I'm sure the 12-24 Nikkor and 400 f2.8 are spoiling you. ;-)
They will be expensive to duplicate in Pentax gear.

I have a Pentax Ds and played a bit with my nephew's new K100D yesterday.
I didn't get much of a read on the shake reduction feature, but I
consider it a plus.
The camera itself is just a bit more boxy than the Ds, maybe more plastic?
I expect the K10D will be a step up and feature share reduction.

I wouldn't have a problem building a system around the old Pentax
lenses that you already owned. If you want to switch later, the glass
has been holding good value as Pentax seems to be adding users with
digital.

The 12-24 won't be that expensive to match, the Pentax 12-24 is

The 400 f2.8 on the other hand...

6.67x10 from files which were sized without 'resampling'. As I recall.
Is there a way of verifying the size of these files?
I'm not feeling so good.

Hi Ann,

glad you like it. I waited for the people to arrange themselves just
so. I have several other frames but this is the one where the people
were best placed.

This was the first time I'd tried to take a 'real' photo with the

K100D comments

2006-08-06 Thread Bob Sullivan
Just a quick report of my impressions of the camera...
I saw my sister and her family yesterday.
She and her 26 year old son are both Pentax users.
He just bought a K100D so I got an up close and personal look at it.

Construction, egronomics, switch layout and menu's are all familiar.
The body is maybe 1/8th inch bigger and a bit more boxy (plastic?) than my DS.
Shake reduction was there, but I couldn't give it much of a test.
The viewfinder was fine, with slightly smaller text below it than my DS.
The LCD on the back was of course much bigger!

Autofocus was similar, but the buffer is smaller. I could get 3
jpeg's in continuous shooting before the 4th shot had a delay while
the buffer emptied. I get more like 6 with the DS.

My nephew has been shooting with an ME Super he 'borrowed' from his
mom. He likes the new camera and waited for shake reduction rather
than buy a DS or DL. He has used it mainly with the 18-55mm kit lens
on fully automatic. He also took the time to figure out how to shoot
some black white conversions on the camera.

Regards, Bob S.

Not a decision I wish to rush in as I am not much into buying and

the decision until next spring as wife will need a DSLR next summer.
If we go the Pentax route it will either be the upcoming K10D or
else try to pick up a used DS/DS2 cheaply and wait for the next
camera ; K1D or K20D or whatever will come down the pipeline and
from the sounds of what Pentax is proposing it does sound positive
that improved models will continue to come. One of the reasons to go
the later route is to later convert the DS to an infrared camera. I
have enjoyed and found informative the emails about the upcoming
K10D (and the speculation as well).

A DS2 or wait for the K10o or K10 seems the way to go. A lot of use

might be an oprion to.

Tried batteries were fully charged 2000Nimh, 2500Nimh and AA Lithiums.
They do all fail but only in its body, mine works fine.

Its serial number is: 5752412. I understood there are comon problem

* Can it be repaired easily or should my brother return it immediately

* If it is a known issue, would Pentax repair it even outside warranty scope?

In Photoshop:
Edit/Preferences/General

Check the History Log box and tell Photoshop how you want the info saved
(either metadata, a text file or both), whether you want a detailed log
or otherwise, and then tell Photoshop where the file is to go.
Be warned, these files get huge quickly.
BTW, I don't have a clue what metadata is, or how to use it.

Maybe. You seem nice enough from your emails

Anyway, once a file is burned to CD and the CD is finalized, you aren't
going to be changing anything on the CD.
I thought your point was that you had made some desirable changes to a
smaller sized file and wanted to know if simply increasing the pixel

2006-08-06 Thread IVAN SHUKSTER

Yes if I go the Pentax route the 12-24 is definetly one of the first if not the
first len we will buy. The 400 2.8 on the other hand I will just borrow the
lens and camera from work..It costs more than any car I have ever owned :) Good
to know the Pentax version is a good performer. I do not use ours that much as
co-worker normally carries it in his bag. I usually use the 17-55 and 70-200
2.8 VR and all the other letters Nikon uses on their lenses. When only able to
use one lens borrow the 18-200 as long as the light will be good. I really
like the 70-200 but it is heavy and the D1X with that lens compared to the MZ5n
and the 70-200 or 70-210 we have is like comparing apples to blueberries

The 12-24 won't be that expensive to match, the Pentax 12-24 is
significantly cheaper than the Nikon but performs just as well
 (The
extra cost in the Nikon is in heavier build and the AF-S motor).

The 400 f2.8 on the other hand...

Mark, as you're probably aware, the mileage you can expect with a hybrid is
very dependent upon your driving cycle, (city/highway) among other things.
If your 65 mile commute is mostly highway you will not see the kick in

Well, it certainly gets better highway mileage (~50 hwy) than what I'm
driving now (~33). And I'm really concerned with reducing my
consumption of petroleum as much as the cost of it. We're probably
going to spend about $24,000 no matter *what* kind of car we get, so
there really is no extra cost for us.

By Tuesday my current 50 mpg vehicle should be on the road, too :)

Re: OT: Toyota hybrid-electric drive system

2006-08-06 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Money is a small part of the consideration.

The key, Ken, is that the Prius is a good car. It has a nice, quiet
interior, excellent ride and handling, and good power for normal
driving needs. On top of that, its highway fuel economy (as reported
by several hundred owners over the past five years in the Prius chat
rooms and forums) runs in the range of 38-50mpg averages, its city
fuel economy runs in the 40-60 mpg averages.

The extra cost of the hybrid power system is warranted on that kind
of fuel mileage for me, coupled with the fact that it's a darn nice
car which otherwise satisfies my needs well. The fact that it uses
less fuel than most others with its performance/quality makes me feel
good about being environmentally friendly as well.

Agreed,

If it's mostly highway, get a Rabbit or Jetta TDI, they get amazing
highway mileage with good all-round performance. The Hybrid will do
better in the city though, partially due to regenerative braking. The
Prius gets notably better city mileage than it does on the highway.

We're probably
going to spend about $24,000 no matter *what* kind of car we get, so
there really is no extra cost for us.

The extra cost I'm thinking about is the premium cost for the hybrid
drivetrain over a similar sized vehicle.

In the hybrid Escape, for example, the cost over a similar non hybrid Escape
is in the range of several thousand $. Well worth the money if you're mostly
in city traffic, more of a questionable worth for mostly highway driving.

I like the concept, but
the dark tree trunk on the left is very disturbing, and I think it needs
either less or more depth of field. The tree reflection in the
background is just at the point of being annoyingly out of focus.
I see a really nice picture in this one, but it needs a crop to get

2006-08-06 Thread John Bailey
Niko,

I am interested in buying the case. Is it still
available?

John
smctak (at) sbcglobal (dot) net

I offer for sale a somewhat worn genuine LX
ever-ready is not detoriating or chipping.
But the top half is worn, both inside and out, see
the pics. It´s still
usable, doesn´t release any dirt on the camera...
Luckily, the lower
half is in much more nice condition.

I am asking for 25EUR, which includes worlwide
shipping from Finland.
PayPal or bank transfer.

If your 65 mile commute is mostly highway you will not see the kick in
mileage that the hybrids are noted for. The extra cost of a hybrid
 would go
a long way to pay for your yearly fuel bill.

We've made two round trips to Calgary in my wife's Nissan X-Trail. it
seems to get something close to 40mp(imperial)g travelling at 110kph.
 Quite amazing actually.
My truck more than makes up for it.

 William Robb

While my current vehicle seems to be averaging around 23 mpg, that's
still better than a 50% improvement over the car it replaced. And
my wife gets better than that in her Mini, which does 3 or 4 times
the number of miles per week.

OT: Please identify this bird

2006-08-06 Thread Francis Alviar
This bird showed up out of nowhere while my daughter
was feeding the ducks at a local park.

The ducks were avoiding it like the plague. Probably
due to the huge beak and menacing eyes.

Anyway just want to know what the name of this bird
is. Apologies for the cropped pic on #2. Had to rush
to take the photos while he still had the fish in his
beak.

Oh and also these are the first shots from my recently
acquired DA 16-45mm lens. The photos are labeled in
the gallery for anybody who cares to see.

Thanks.

My intention with the DOF was to keep it somewhat shallow - I wanted
the reeds to be sharply focused and the reflection to be slightly OOF
to emphasize the separation between the two.

I'll have to look more at the cropping that you suggest. Thanks for
looking and commenting.

WR I like the concept, but
WR the dark tree trunk on the left is very disturbing, and I think it needs
WR either less or more depth of field. The tree reflection in the

WR I see a really nice picture in this one, but it needs a crop to get

Hmmmcertainly one of the problems with a shot containing a
reflection is that it can be disorienting. As this is the second
comment in a row concerning this one, perhaps it doesn't work too
well. Hopefully there will be a few more comments to help solidify
the feeling. The couple people I show the image to here rather like
it.

Anyway, thank you for sharing your feelings - it always helps to

In the hybrid Escape, for example, the cost over a similar non hybrid Escape
is in the range of several thousand $. Well worth the money if you're mostly
in city traffic, more of a questionable worth for mostly highway driving.

In the Ford/Mercury line, the hybrid drive train costs about the same
amount extra as a diesel drive train (not necessarily in the same model)
... about $5k over the same vehicle with a pure-gasoline drive train.
