Re: How Canada spends its tax dollars
Rick, I hear your whistle, but think differently. We know one another here and have some mutual respect. I'd hope we can share some differing opinions in a friendly environment and think about things in our lives. How boring and without growth would we be if we only did pictures of pretty landscapes? No more still lifes by Godfrey, no more fuzzy street photography from Frank. It would not help any of us learn, and that's what I think this should be about. I don't want to cause any heartburn. I do want a strong and balanced 2 party system, and a media where we can have reasoned discussions about important issues without screaming at each other or painting the other guy as the Devil. In the 1980's Fuji produced a pair of Kodak Instant Film compatible cameras and a Kodak Instant Camera compatible Film. It appears these products died at the same time Polaroid won their patent infringement case against Kodak. A number of years ago we were given a Fji Pictrostat printer. What it was, in essence, was a flatbed scanner attached to an instant print camera. The system used two pieces of material, a doner and a reciever to make the image. It was uncannily like a Polaroid peel apart print. This was just after Kodak had to pay Polaroid that huge settlement for infringing on their patent. Hum, the brown shirts wore uniforms, the Deme. supporters of Obama's policies are the ones wearing uniforms, you can tell them by their purple shirts with professionally printed signs. Those actually disrupting the town hall's seem to be pissed off taxpayer's or in some cases agents provocateurs. Re: OT: was Re: How Canada spends its tax dollars
Ken, You're in one of those Dem. states so maybe you know better than me. I see the disrupted townhall meetings as the Rep. right wingers creating havoc. I've been a lifelong Rep. or at most independent. (My dad's middle name was Harding, after the Nov. 1920 Rep. nominating convention.) I've got to read more about the Brown Shirts in '30's Germany. Didn't they come to power thru disruption without majority support? That's what I'm afraid of here. I live in the most conservative Rep. county in Illinois. I blame the right wing Rep. for Obama's election. 10 years ago, our Senator was Carol Mosley Brown, a joke after 6 years in office. A conservative Rep. lawyer, rich with multi-million dollar settlements (drug?) bought the Rep. primary by outspending his opponent about 9 to 1. He got himself elected, but 6 years later got bored or couldn't work with colleagues. He didn't run for re-election, so the Rep. found another conservative rich fellow, a young, former investment banker turned math teacher to run on family values. The Dems put Obama on the ballot, kind of a 'Hail Mary Pass' to take the seat. The Rep. guy was named Ryan. He was married to Jerri Ryan, the Borg babe '7 of 9' on Star Trek in the painted on outfit. They had 'sealed' divorce papers which came unraveled to reveal the family values candidate divorced over trying to take his wife to sex clubs. He was toast and withdrew. The Reps couldn't find anybody else to run and decided to import Alan Keyes, a conservative black radio host from NY/NJ(?), to run from Illinois. Obama won in a landslide. So the right wing Rep. minority in Illinois have managed over the last 10 years to get rid of the moderate voters in the party and hand over elections to the Dems. It's a sad time for lifelong Republicans like me, and I'm angry about it! Regards, Bob S. RE: GESO Fortress Guernsey
Thanks Bob It's partly because stone is more durable (they say that Guernsey is made up of some of the Earth's oldest rocks), but also partly because of the care that's taken looking after and renovating the 18th century and earlier stuff. There are still lots of mixed memories about the German occupation and the tendency immediately after the war was to fill in the earthworks and break up the concrete. Re: Pentax pictures are harsh and garish
Audiophiles spent years writing about how the Compact Disc sound was harsh, grainy, gave them headaches, no way could this medium ever surpass the vinyl LP album for 'true' sound. They were correct, with the exception that it would never surpass the LP. The technology got better, the recording engineers learned how to deal with it, and the sound is now very acceptable. Of course, you have to have tens of thousands of dollars worth of D-A converters, special cables, high end amps, and nothing but the best 'pressings' to appreciate the sound. It's all talk, Chris. Unless he plans on shooting with an end result of 40 x 60 prints with soft irregular grain replaced by sharp edge pixels. Re: First K-7 woes
Hi! 1. Not shooting through glass of course. 2. No, I haven't tuned my LCD (yet). 3. I'd like to be told where is that checkbox that you mentioned can be found? 4. No, I am not *looking* for problems. I am just making all kinds of shots (time of day and my tiredness permitting) to see how this camera behaves. Though of course, I am being extra attentive to the results, 'cause I need to study the new tool. 5. Notably, I decided not to do this heat testing as it is unlikely that I will run into such condition any time soon. Meanwhile, the handling, the AF and general operation of this camera is much to my liking. Finally, I've just made a quick test shoot with PEF/DNG/JPG, sRGB/AdobeRGB options. So far indeed DNG is slightly warmer than PEF, but I found no serious color representation problems. The conditions were quite similar - same building, roughly the same time as yesterday. In fact, nothing to write home about, except that I still get consistent underexposure which I did not correct yet, as I want to study the camera at its default condition. I've also found that switching between Adobe Standard and Camera Standard calibration profiles has certain effect on the colors. Yet, indeed more shooting will be necessary, which probably will happen by the weekend. I intend to keep you posted, guys, as I think such an experience will have its merits for more people than just me. Boris William Robb wrote: We'll presume that you weren't shooting through glass. Also, have you tuned your LCD? (I presume the adjustment is there for consumer based QC). And finally, have you ticked the checkbox in Lightroom's presets that allow you to set the default to camera serial number? This should allow you to dial in file handling based on the camera in case it needs a bit of a tweak. And finally, are you looking for problems? This last part is important, because you surely will find what you want to find. Believe what you believe, if the Democrats continue to follow the course they're on, I would bet that in 2010 they'll see their present majority's in congress significantly reduced if not eliminated and Obama will be a lame duck for the rest of his Presidency, even if he's reelected for a second term. But I'm only looking at the polls. Byut that's only a symptom. The Democrats are actively working to destroy the US economy, as opposed to the Rebublicans who only accidentally worked to destroy the economy, eventually people notice things like that. Re: Pentax pictures are harsh and garish
I know it's cemented optical glass on a gelatin filter, and all but Tiffen's #87 is less expensive and a real Wratten equivalent, which will supposidly give you better results. If you're looking for a screw in filter the 49 and 55mm mm sizes are half the price of any others at B&H.. I shoot both Nikon and Pentax Dslr's and i can honestly say i have to post process less on my K10D shots than my D200 or D2H shots. Colour is a lot nicer out of the box so to speak. You won't get much for your istD anyway. Buy a Hoya R72 filter and have some IR fun. However, recently I got tired of looking at my old *istD sat idle and thought about selling it. I mentioned it to a co-worker and he was initially enthusiastic. Then I got this mail... Chris I think I will give your Pentax a miss. I have been looking at sample photos on the internet and they all have something in common, that they look a little harsh to me and the colours are not easy on the eye. That's what I like about my Fuji camera, the pictures are soft and natural looking. Now, I don't mind that he doesn't want it - that's fine and I am not entirely sure I want to sell it anyway, but I get the feeling he might be dissing my wee camera a bit too much here? :) Harsh and the colours not easy on the eye? And it's funny you should write it like that, because that's one more thing I did recently; to set up access to the old machine through RDP rather than using a KMP switch. :-) I don't really think our philosophies for security are all that different. When the *istD hit the market, Pentax got comments on being very conservative as to the amount of both antialias filtering and colour rendering. Soft and muted were general terms applied by reviewers, and in hindsight I very much agree with them. The subsequent *ist models sharpened up the rendering, both with regards to colour and intended pun. No need to thump him, I guess, but maybe remind him that it's futile to judge a camera from web-sized images? Re: oh, my gosh . . .
AlunFoto wrote: The real question is whether UAC is good enough to deserve the faith you place in it. The irony is that I place no particular faith in it, but I leave it enabled to make me think before clicking "OK". :-) Microsoft has attempted to build security for people who know nothing about the threats but everything about convenience. It's worse, actually. They built the OS around convenience, and in some cases a raging naivete (e.g., ActiveX), then tried to paste security on as an afterthought. Which is pretty strange in the case of NT and its children (2000, XP, 2003, Vista, 7), since NT started out with a reasonable security model ... it just was subverted by every other piece of code they wrote/write. That's a tricky task. As it stands, UAC seems nothing more than stating questions about decisions I'm already conscious about as an advanced PC user. That's true for some advanced users. Most users of Windows aren't advanced. Unfortunately, 1) Microsoft does nothing to educate those users of the significance of those popups from UAC 2) the UAC popups occur too often and sometimes for innocuous actions 3) the popups themselves do little to tell you what could happen or why the UAC window appeared in the first place Which combine to undermine the usefulness of UAC, since they dropped the ball completely on the user education half of the equation. Using admin level for ordinary work is probably unnecessary but old habits are hard to break. But then again I have my old machine for computer games and other more speculative stuff, like accounting software and email. :-) I help analyze viruses and other forms of malware for a living. Those machines can't have A/V software, or it would "eat" the samples I'm examining. At home or at work, I never do daily stuff as an admin user, except in a virtual machine. It's one more barrier to the bad guys. A layered defense is essential. Even so, I have to log out and back in as an admin user about once every two weeks or so to get something done, like installing some software patches. I don't consider that an inconvenience. All of my games work just fine as a non-admin user, including some hogs, like Crysis and Total Immersion Racing and GTR2. -- Thanks, DougF (KG4LMZ) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
