Re: GESO - My Svalbard images
Even when being there, it's easy to be fooled by the dimensions. Every feature is further away and every ascent steeper than you expect. :-( The rifle gal was our guide for the trip. She turned out to be quite a personality. Enough merits already to deserve a NatGeo article all of her own. I asked her if she had any big projects this year. She shrugged and told me she had to work as guide for a couple of years to save up for the next big one. This year her only plans were to cross Greenland by ski, along the old Nansen route. She didn't like to talk much about her personal projects, but I discovered her previous achievement was to circumnavigate the islands of South Georgia by kayak in a group of four, last November. :-) Jostein 2011/3/28 Bob Sullivan rf.sulli...@gmail.com: Jostein, Amazing landscapes. Glad you like it, Ann! :-) The night shot of the mine on the hillside may have been altered, I'm not sure. I did the editing on the laptop, and tweaked it back and forth after posting the PESO. This publishing was done from my desktop PC, after transferring the whole bundle of shots from the laptop. I quickly lose track of my versioning with those operations. To be on assignment to do shoot stuff like that wouldn't bother me much. But I don't think I'll be working for NatGeo anytime soon, Ann. :-( Met a Dutch photographer on assignment up there, btw. Re: GESO - My Svalbard images
The boat is a schooner that they anchor in Tempelfjorden each winter and let it freeze in. It is then used for accommodation in an adventure travel concept. Guests are picked up in Longyearbyen by dog sled, and are entertained with excursions. The trip to Longyearbyen takes about two hours on a nice day by snowmobile, I think, so it's probably about the double by dog sled. The last of the three images has a seal resting on the ice between me and the boat. The seals carve breathing holes in the ice from underneath, and come up to rest. pesos cormy and friend
Before Walt leaves for Kentucky tomorrow, I brought him down to twin lakes beach / Schwann lagoon to see if we could find any cormorants. Just before dark, I saw an osprey flying with a fish in its talons. Shortly thereafter a cormorant landed in the same tree, not far away. I spent some time shooting from across the lagoon with my 300/2.8 adaptall and its 2x TC. Just as the light was fading, I realized that if I walked around the lagoon I could get a lot closer, and in the fading light, I'd do better with the 300/2.8 from 100 feet below rather than 500 feet away across the lagoon. I wasn't having tremendously good luck, I even tried the pop-up flash on the K-5. Just as I was walking away, I remembered I had my AF540 in my pack. It took a few tries to get it to even fire, but once I did, and bumped up the ISO to 4,000, I got some decent shots. RE: pesos cormy and friend
I wasn't having tremendously good luck, I even tried the pop-up flash on the K-5. Just as I was walking away, I remembered I had my AF540 in my pack. It took a few tries to get it to even fire, but once I did, and bumped up the ISO to 4,000, I got some decent shots. Bird pictures are tough, judging from your results, bird pictures with flash are even tougher. Thank you for adding to the list of things I am not going to touch with a long stick anytime in the near future. I like these, but anything shot in minimal light is going to be a compromise. The eye reflections can be fixed in PS, but it's a lot of work. But the flash is your friend when shooting birds. Used as fill, it's very helpful because you're frequently shooting up toward the sky when photographing birds, so backlit is common. Being back
Hello there. It seems that the hostilities have paused for the time being. I am pretty much back to my normal mode of functioning. I sincerely appreciate everyone's comments and concerns expressed on and off the list which in fact quite amazes me - to know that so many people do care. Again, in order to negate even the most remote possibility of the flame, I am asking to please leave this message unanswered or at least not answered in a way that could provoke the other person to respond in tone. As a matter of on-topic point, I should say that this weekend Galia and I spent about an hour choosing and polishing her best photos over past 3 years (since she was 6 and shooting with Optio W30). All together 25 photos were chosen, a JAlbum book ordered and now we're anticipating its arrival. In my somewhat biased view, Galia is making steady progress in photography as well as in her other activities. Thanks again for your kind words! Jack :) Now that you say it, #31 IS slightly red, I think it works for me but will see if a little adjustment is in order. #33 is more of a documentation piece - it was a portrait session so I don't think there are going to be any more of those full body shots from other shooters. Available light is something I am more comfortable with so ISOs of 1600 and more are my natural habitat. K-5 really shines here - better noise and more megapixels means I can retain more details. However - the unusually-warm temperatures that summer had the audience dropping out like flies and I just kept shifting forward to fill the gaps. By the time Mick and the boys hit the stage I was in the front row, on a sunny day, with a telephoto lens and crisp, sharp slide film. The comments I already received are reflected in the updated pictures from the first batch already. kris I'm going to be constructively critical. #32 is #1 #34 is #2 #31 is #3 #33 is #4 #1 Nice pose. Usually a high-contrast shot is left for male subjects, but you pulled it off nicely. Perhaps a reflector on the right to add a bit more content to the hair while still maintaining contrast would have been a little helpful. #2 I like the tonality. You were able to maintain the shadows on her arms to some tonal variety -- something many would miss. (A lot of digital bw sucks.) Perhaps dodge the eyes a bit. The whites of her eyes are too gray. Again, you've done a nice job with a high-contrast project. ** If possible I'd like to have a color file of this to see what I could do in bw conversion. #3 Close-ups like this scare me. Not her. Just the idea. I'd never attempt one. But you did control the reflection off her eyes. (Many amateurs miss those details.) Well done. #4 I have to be really hard on this one. The angle doesn't work. The background and surroundings are cluttered. But her expression *can* work if she has a context -- looking @ something or with some purpose. This is the only bad one of the bunch but even so it's a starting point for future efforts.
