Re: PESO: Two 'Lips
Thanks for the comments. I struggled a bit with the background, there's greenery from that angle but if I moved much there would have been fence. That photo was taken in cloudy weather. The sun came out later so I took another, but it ended up a bit contrasty. They are just two of probably about 20 tulips that we have growing in a half wine barrel. About half of them are that colour, the rest are a little larger and pure red. A few weeks ago I went along to see Chas Roberts, had myself measured up, chatted about the requirements and he is making an audax bike for me. He called last week to say the frame is finished and that it had just gone to the paint shop, so I expect in a week or two to get another call to come and collect it. It will be somewhat like this, but a different colour (burgundy) and no logo other than having the engraved name picked out in cream on the ends of the seat stays: http://www.robertscycles.com/audax1.html The frame is Reynolds 853. The forks are 531. Handbuilt wheels 700x25C. A mix of Campag and Shimano componentry. Road triple (26/36/48), 11-32 9-speed on the back, which makes a nice set of touring gears and for commuting keeps me on the same chainring all the time - it's very similar to my current gearing (11-28 7-speed) which I'm very happy with. Light touring in my case means long weekends credit card touring with just a small saddlebag, no panniers or crap like that, and holidays in France touring from a fixed centre - cycling from here to a gite. I have some ambitions for much longer tours but they will have to wait until I win the lottery and can afford to spend weeks or months away. And year-round commuting of course. I had to adjust the seat down just a bit for a comfortable reach to the pedals, and any other adjustments that may be needed should be well within reach of the setup it has now, as far as I can tell. Being an average-sized (albeit flabby) person does have its advantages. I doubt I'll ever see the day when I have a bike custom made to fit -- and if I ever do, it will be a consequence of some serious lifestyle changes. At the 1951 Farnborough Airshow, Żurakowski demonstrated a new aerobatics manoeuvre, the Zurabatic Cartwheel, in which he suspended the Gloster Meteor G-7-1 prototype he was flying, in a vertical cartwheel. This jet manoeuvre was the first new aerobatic in 20 years.[6] The cartwheel used the dangerously asymmetric behaviour the Meteor had with one engine throttled back. The manoeuvre started with a vertical climb to 4,000 ft by which point the aircraft had slowed to only 80 mph. Cutting the power of one engine caused the Meteor to pivot. When the nose was pointing downwards, the second engine was throttled back and the aircraft continued to rotate through a further 360 degrees on momentum alone having lost nearly all vertical velocity. Carrying out the cartwheel and recovering from it with entering an inverted spin (which the Meteor could not be brought out of) required great skill. PDML meet in Italy ?
G'day all - my wife and I are off to Italy in a week's time for a month, and it would be good to catch up with any PDML'ers who may be available during the trip. We'll be in Verona 31/10 and 1/11, Venice 2/11 till 7/11 . Then we have ten days with no fixed itinerary, but will be driving between Venice and Rome, where we will be from 16/11 until 26/11. In the gap between Venice and Rome, we're thinking Ravenna - Forli - Bologna - Firenze. Any takers? If we can arrange a meet up, I'll email my mobile number so that rendezvous can be arranged! I wonder just how much difference a custom frame really makes, unless you're looking for the last little bit of performance, or have some very specific and unusual needs. On the other hand, once you get to a certain level of quality, where the frames are pretty much hand made anyways, it probably doesn't cost a lot to have them custom fitted. In your part of the world, it's possible that there are some horribly underpaid craftsmen turning out beautiful handmade frames for a fraction of what they'd cost here. Though, more likely, there aren't enough people buying custom frames to support someone. In any case, it's probably worth figuring out what you'd want in a custom frame, then shopping around to see what comes closest. When I bought my doublecross (the one I posted links to photos of) it turns out that through a local shop I was able to get them to build up a bike, with just the parts I wanted and needed, for less than getting one off the shelf from another shop would have been. I specifically wanted a cyclocross frame because I wanted something sturdier and didn't mind a little extra weight on the bike. By the way, I got inline brake handles on the bars and they are wonderful. In addition to having the standard braked down on the drops, I can ride the bike in an upright position and have brakes right there. Very handy for those long, neck cramping, downhills. Now, all I need, is time, and weather, to allow me to ride it. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com (from dos4est) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Hi John, I live in Ravenna, hence I'll be happy to meet you here or in Forlì, which is just half-hour drive from home. However, during the week I can hardly think of finding more than one hour or so, free for such meeting. Perhaps a dinner will better do the trick, but I have to ask the wife for that ;-) Oh, and I'll be away on 9/11. On the other hand, a meeting (possibly widened to other PDML folks?) during the weekend could be welcome too. I can consider 5 or 6 in Venice, and 12 or 13 elsewhere. Bologna is 1-hour drive from here, while Firenze is 2 hours and a half, by motorway (if everthing goes well, which is not always the case with the Appennines route). Re: Blurb Discount
I purchased/downloaded one my books to try it out. Works fine on my iPhone 3G. Holding the phone in horizontal orientation you see 2 itty-bitty teeny tiny pages. Which can be expanded as desired. Page flipping etc. all work fine. Ironically, the same book did not work on the iPad (1st gen., if that makes and difference). Page formatting was off, some photos missing or chopped off. I am in discussion with Blurb and looking forward to their next upgrade or two. To confirm your suspicion, per the Blurb site, the ePub format used for these books is intended only for the iOS family. Re: PESO: No Rocket Launching
Thanks for looking, Steve and Darren, and thanks for your humorous remarks. This is one of several county parks where I live. It is the site for many dog shows, picnics and other events, but it serve primarily as the local 4-H fairgrounds. There are three more or less permanent areas: horse show rings, a runway for model aircraft take-offs and landings, and the launching pad used by the 4-H rocket clubs. Obviously, the rockets spook the horses, ego this prohibition. I though the sign singularly specific, and therefore a bit humorous. Re: PESO: No Rocket Launching
From: Daniel J. Matyola Thanks for looking, Steve and Darren, and thanks for your humorous remarks. Technically, if you're going to scare the horses, aren't you supposed to be doing it out in the streets? -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
OT -- A question for the collective wisdom of the list.
I've just received a semi clever scam letter. Not that the content is all that clever but the method of delivering the content was clever. The offer itself is similar to the Nigerian scam with the twist that you're stealing from dead South Africans. Now I want to report this to some proper authority, but all the ones I know of are asking for the text of the e-mail, copied and pasted into a web form; which is where the clever part come in. There is no text. The offer is a Jpeg attachment that looks like text. You can't copy and paste that. Short of running the image file through OCR software I'm at a loss. I don't think that will work. I expect that they reject binary files out of hand, because of paranoia. Re: OT: Query for the cyclists
Along similar lines, I was experiencing neck issues with the riding position of my 1988 Cannondale MTB. Talked to a local Trek dealer and wound up with their 7300 hybrid. Cured the neck issue and put some more fun back into riding. The Cannondale was no slouch in its time but its enlightening to see the progress in bike technology since 1988. Both bikes have aluminum frames and are equipped with reasonably components - not the top of the line but far from junk. Thge shifters on the Trek are about as good as can be while the Cannodale has a less positive shift mechanism. The Trek has front suspension, a cushioning seat post several built in adjustable points while the Cannondale had none of that. The Trek cost $250 less than the Cannondale. I bought my current bike 16-17 years ago for £400- and have probably spent about the same amount, maybe a bit more, on maintenance and renovation in that time. So that's about £1.00 a week. i had to wikipede what an audax was. I have some ambitions for much longer tours but they will have to wait until I win the lottery and can afford to spend weeks or months away. And year-round commuting of course. i have grand plans too. but it'll all have to wait. it'll be years before i can take a year or more off. meanwhile planning something mildly ambitious for the next year. baby steps... :) I look forward to hearing about it and seeing the pictures. Something that I noticed on both this, and the rocket launch photo is the unnatural looking vibrance of the grass. I think that this is also suffering from dynamic range issues. The details in the tree are lost, but the clouds are blown out. This is one of those shots that I always bracket with the intent of combining for better dynamic range. I don't mean the crazy tone mapping, just getting shadow details without blowing out the highlights. As it is, it's a few stops short of a full palette. The trailers in the background are rather distracting also. What is really nice however, is the reflection of the clouds in the water. I think that you could make a huge improvement with just a square crop of the bottom of the frame, lighten it up and tone down the saturation a touch. Or, just a hunch, knock out the saturation all together. I think it would have worked best if you had gotten closer to the water so that it filled a lot more of the image, and exposed to the right so that the clouds in the reflection were just shy of blowing out. The top half, trees against the clouds is nice, but not spectacular and the dark tones of the tree fighting against the cloud highlights is too big of a technical challenge, one which can't overcome the clutter of the light poles, fences etc. Dan Matyola http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/danieljmatyola -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com (from dos4est) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Bicycles are, if anything, worse than cameras when it comes to pricing. When I wanted to get in a bit of exercise I decided to explore the cheap options first. For around $300 you can pick up a perfectly decent model (in my case a 21-gear hybrid with front suspension forks, sprung seat, upright riding position, etc.) That's served me well for a few years now - I don't feel a compelling need to go out and spend 5 (or 50) times as much. Sure, it's a bit heavy. But it's helped me remove about 40 lbs of unwanted weight (which puts worrying over a few pounds of bike frame into perspective). About the only change I made was to replace the tyres that came with it (supposedly all-terrain tyres). I found that the minute you took them off-road (even on just hard backwoods dirt trails) those tyres just weren't tough enough; I had three punctures is as many trips. A set of higher-pressure tyres were a lot more puncture-resistant, with the added benefit of being a lot easier to pedal on the roads and bike trails where I do 90% or more of my riding. I've been a bit slack this year - the bike has spent far too much time in the garage. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

FS Friday: LX with FA-1 finder and Winder; Manfrotto 3021PRO tripod leg set (and more)
I have a nice copy of the Pentax LX with Power Winder and FA-1 finder (built-in diopter correction) for sale. Also a nice Manfrotto 3021PRO tripod leg set. (I have a 3021PRO for myself that I recently purchased and I prefer it to the newer model that replaces it). Probably not of interest to this group, but I'll mention it anyway... I also have a Linhof professional heavy duty tripod with 2-way professional pan head. This thing is a ROCK, on reason that it was long sold with Questar telescopes. It is for people interested in stability over weight concerns (long lens shooters, large format shooters, astronomy, etc.) It weighs 28lbs and can handle 45lbs on the head with no problems. I also have a Linhof long-lens support. It is apparently a custom-made piece. It is light-weight and on the topside has a machined piece 1/4 thread for camera that can be placed anywhere along a long slot. At the front end (topside) is a platform with another 1/4 thread to engage the long lens' tripod socket. The platform can be raised approx. 3-1/2 (putting the two tripod sockets at different levels to accommodate the difference between camera body and lens but yet support both. On the bottom side is the disk with tripod sockets (3/8 or 1/4). A very unusual piece but provides an exceptionally stable platform for long lens and body. Previous owner told me he used it with large format, medium format and 35mm systems. BESO: 40mm Limited fixed unlike so many other things
Some may remember that my 40mm Limited was busted back in July in a trip to Brazil. I finally followed some pointers and found an excellent technician right here in Vancouver, and it's all fixed up. Re: PESO - Kalenderdamer 2012 Outtake #4963
Frank said what I had in mind: It's a really haunting and thought-provoking image. And it was NOT in the calendar! It is no surprise than the calendar sold in hundreds; your standards must be very high... That being said, since this is for a calendar, I understand that you may be tied to the landscape format. Still, if I could see the bottom of that arc... ;-) Despite all that, I think it's a really haunting and thought-provoking image. I like the shots .. have to say I don't care much for the broad white frames you set them in. I used to like them - did something similar for a while sometime back but I think they detract rather than enhance. telleby blitish tea time shot - fun the stormy sky is my other pick envying your trip! ann On 10/21/2011 15:40, Tim Bray wrote: Indeed, made this North American smile. -T On Fri, Oct 21, 2011 at 2:16 AM, Godfrey DiGiorgiramar...@mac.com wrote: Paul and I took a ride on the Manx Electric Tramway yesterday, from Ramsey to Douglas and back. I love that little lens as well. I would definitely have it repaired if it needed that... Thanks for the repairman article, by the way; it was nice to meet such a fellow... even only in virtually! Re: Challenge: Photos of your bikes
two unedited shots just taken: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25713106@N04/sets/72157627822263599/detail/ what i ride most is an old Miyata touring frame reworked with no front derailleur (so it's a 6-speed); it's littered with top-end components but it's pretty well camouflaged as a junker; it fits me really well, has a Brooks sprung saddle; the ancient Ritchey After-Bite cyclocross tires on it need to be replaced, and i'm thinking Schwalbes to defy tribulus terrestris i also have a beautiful high-end Ritchey P-20 mountain bike with 2x9 gearing, currently in dry dock as i have fit an h-bar and have been lazy about the cable rework that job implied; it's a wonderful bike but i'd ride it more if it had a more minimal front fork and were better camouflaged -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
