Yeah, I have more emails somewhere in outlook files starting 2000, I think :)

For me, all those emails became some kind of knowledge base - one of
the first places I search for answers on Pentax-related topics :)
Granted, there are other places with good information and other (even
bigger) list archives (like mail-archive.com), but that wasn't always
like that before.

I'll agree with your conclusion. Over the years I wasn't following all
the discussions of course and tell you truth, I did not read the list
much in later years, but when I did I always found some interesting
stuff here.
Yes, flame wars and big chunks of off-topic discussions was the reason
I stopped following list closely... But now most gear topics migrated
to other places and what's left was artistic core of Pentax
followers... And very interesting pictures to look at!

Hope, list will keep up for long years to come :)

BTW, I see many familiar names on Pentax Forums as well as DPReview forum...

Dmitry, according to my memory several years ago (probably around 2008
or so) there were a transition from gear conversational to picture
taking character of the list. The number of PESOs, GESOs, PAWs, etc grew
substantially. I reckon a simple search for the above words in the
subject lines of the messages may give you indication and correct my
estimate of the year as well.

I should also point out that (although I've been unsubscribed for a
while) it would seem that the list has become less prone to flame wars,
which in fact is good. Here a joke about new Pentax flame resistant
coatings may be in order, but I fail to come up with one.

And yes, the likes of PentaxForums have their toll. I've been posting
there as well, although it seems a general opinion of this community
that PentaxForums is a bunch of ... <-- insert your own favorite
non-praising term here.

And finally, given that Pentax delivered over they years excellent DSLR,
outstanding 645D camera and a number of other interesting bits and
pieces, what would we have to talk about, really? :-)

Cheers.

Are on a Mac or PC? If you're running 64 bit Windows, you can only
access 2 gig of ram for 32 bit software like PSE. You can open that up
to 4 gig with this patch tool...

http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php

After you run the patch tool, be sure to go to
Edit->Preferences->Performance in PSE and make sure PSE is set to use
100% of the available RAM.

I found a marked difference in performance after I used this patch.

If you're running 32-bit Windows this won't help...and if you're using a
Mac, maybe one of the Mac guys can help.

OT: Road Trip

2012-06-02 Thread Walter Hamler
Two friends and I just returned from a road trip to Utah and
surrounding area. We went mostly as an excuse to see the annular
solar eclipse, but it was a great opportunity to see some of the major
national parks. We got most of them, North Rim, Grand Canyon, Bryce
Canyon, Zion, Arches, Escalante, Canyonlands, and Dead Horse St. Park.
All were everything I expected and then some.

I had wanted to pickup an extra body, the OMD5, but they wern't
available locally. The day after I returned I got a call that a
chrome body was in. I bit! Then I discovered that my copy of PS
Elements 9 would not open the OMD raw files. Not willing to buy ver
10, I opted for Aperture instead. So far, so good, but with almost
2000 images to edit, it is proving to be tedious!

Pics to follow in a few days, hopefully!

I posted them at full resolution, because I'm actively seeking feedback,

Since feedback on a whole set is a lot of work so well, I'm picking this one,

They were all shot with the 16-50. I thought about using primes, but the 16-50
is sharp enough at f/8-16 and a lot more versatile.

GFM Update

2012-06-02 Thread Mark Roberts
We've just had dinner and people are chatting and waiting for the
evening's presentations to begin. Pretty good weekend so far. I did my
usual Thursday night camp out on the mountain; I had some fairly good
shots at sunset but there was no sunrise to speak of. Still, it was a
great hike and a tough workout (because I got a late start and had to
really hustle).

Friday was sign-in day and the opening presentations for the weekend.
Doug and I gave a pep talk for the photo contest and then started
preparing for the rest of the annual ordeal :) The usual suspects from
the PDML are here, as well as a couple of lurkers. It's always great
to meet these friends face to face. Doesn't happen often enough.

This morning I led a short hike along the Profile Trail and we did
some shooting on one of the streams that comes off Grandfather
Mountain. I used a couple of rolls of slide film in the 67. Might have
some good stuff. I haven't even had a chance to check the digital
shots from this morning because we've been so busy with the logistics
of the photo contest. The good news is that Doug and I have half the
judging done already and it's only 6:30 on Saturday night. We'll
probably finish it all up this evening and have a non-panicked Sunday
morning. That would be a first. Tomorrow brings the Doug & Mark
show...

The original Pentax battery is rated at 1860 mAh and costs $40-45.

Igor, I am not talking about the declared power rating of the batteries.
I am talking about the actual experience in terms of my regular shooting

observant person, I notice things such as when I have to replace my

Larry, here is my setup, for whatever it is worth. Storage is a simple
Unix box (some flavor of Fedora if I ain't mistaken) with gigabit
network adapter. My main PC (whose configuration in terms of processing
power is unimportant) has two network adapters - one (100 MB) for
networking and another (1 GB) connects directly to the storage. All my
RAW (PEF or DNG) files are on the storage while the catalog is on the
main PC. The LR is set so that whenever it exits it prompts me to backup
my catalog to the storage which I do every now and then according to
taste. Another valid point here I think is that my main PC has SSD for
its main disk, so it is pretty fast.

Presently I am at about 1/5th of your total volume or may be it is
1/6th. I am having about 0.8 TB of RAW files and about 1 GB big catalog.

As a matter of further precaution I backup my network drive to a
portable HDD.

I'm on Windows PCs for my main systems, with big tower cases. The
laptop just carries photos back to the main system. External "RAID
lockers" out there, but they can get a bit expensive when you get over
two-drive capacity.

What does one cost, with 6-8 TB of capacity?

The logic units run US$ 500 to US$ 1,000 for four-drive capacity units,
the last time I looked, around Christmas. Then you have to add the raw
drives to it. Six to eight TB seems to be running around another US$
500-600 if you get 2TB drives. With the external units, performance may
be high enough to use RAID 5 instead of RAID 10. I haven't tried them.

I only wish those sorts of backup options had been economically available for
film.

I guess you can't do film to film contact prints.

Someone could have, and a few probably did. I could have if I'd done a
little reading up on it and bought a small amount of equipment. But the
time and hassle were too much for me, and for most folks, I'd guess.
Especially compared to now, where I can just scan the negs and back them
up with my digital originals.

I suspect that the solution that I'll end up with for working on
multiple machines will be just to put my working files on their
own external hard drive that I can easily transfer from machine to

I use small (a hundred GB or so) externals as "in flight" backups and
transportation back to the main archives. It's about the only
reasonable way to go when you're moving around.

Bob - field burning is still common practice not too many hundred miles upwind
from you (Kansas, Missouri that I know of, probably Nebraska and Iowa as well).
I doubt if it contributes in any significant way to air pollution there (or in
Oz).

Even though the colors are a good portion of the impact, I think I would like

Well composed and rendered, David.
Here in northern California, the rice stubble had, for years, been burned off.
Air pollution became an issue and the practice was gradually ended. The
previous year's stubble is now rotted away by winter rains in combination with
some flooding of the fields.

G'day All,

I was traveling through the wheatbelt a few weeks ago with some
friends when  we came across this scene:

It was getting close to planting time for the new wheat crops and the
farmers were burning off the stubble from last seasons crop.

Enjoy.

I was just addressing the working copy, not the backups.

Moving things to the new working system would allow me to retire my old working
copies to backup status, and since they're full, they won't be in use and can
go offsite. But, you're right my working copies, and my two backup copies of my
last five years of photography are all currently in the same building, with the
negatives and prints of my previous 35 years of photography, and I expect the
same thing would happen to the drives as to the negatives.

the four drive RAID 10 array is in the computer? This is not a feasible, or
even possible, solution with an iMac or a laptop. I'd need an external system.

What does one cost, with 6-8 TB of capacity?

I guess you can't do film to film contact prints.

I suspect that the solution that I'll end up with for working on multiple
machines will be just to put my working files on their own external hard drive
that I can easily transfer from machine to machine.

Yep, big USB drives are great. I have a pair of 2Tb USB2 drives for my photo
files. I keep one on the desk and the other in the garage. Once a week I'll
bring the garage one in and do a Time Machine sync to it, and copy across any
updated photo files from the other drive.

The reason I keep the second drive in the garage is to keep me covered in case
the house burns down...

I'm hoping that Apple makes it easier to run multiple Time Machine backups like
this, without having to reconfigure it to use each drive in turn. It's not a
big deal but I do like to encourage good paranoid backup processes.
