Dave, it looks barren because it is the end of the dry season & no
appreciable rain has fallen yet. This is a shot taken at the same place

No. When I pointed out on another forum that Nikon was just a Mitsubishi
brand name, I was given a really long lecture about Mitsubishi's
"Keiretsu", and how Nikon isn't "owned" by anyone other than Nikon. I
suspect it was a Nikon fan boy, or it may have just been a pompous piece
of shit. They are hard to tell one from the other.
The link that Darren gave was interesting up to the point where the guy

Dario

Not at all! I think mixing styles would be "disturbing" in some ways. Your
first image in the set establishes expectations for what will follow. To
switch after a few frames, than maybe switch again, and again, and the
viewers' attention is on the photographic style rather than on the subject
and composition. It would be different if the set were intended as part of a
tutorial on style.

I think it depends a little on the story you want to tell.
The two up-close pics with guitar (#2-3, I think) are quite similar, and
coming early in the series they dominate quite a bit. Spread them, and
they'll work as intimate moments between shots of (relatively speaking) more
of an overview.

But honestly, I'm out on a limb here. I mean, I'm not at all able to pursue
these instructions coherently for my own storytelling... :-)

Re: K-3 review as seen through the eyes of the PF

2013-11-12 Thread Darren Addy
I have to say, that is a pretty comprehensive review.

As I expected the K-3 falls just a bit short in the dynamic range
department (over the K-5/ii/iis) but its advantages in other areas
would probably still make it a slam dunk upgrade overall for most. It
seems that in the AF department, owners of the K-5ii/iis will not
notice a big difference in the AF performance, and K-5iis owners
already have the AA-free option (though not the switchable option of
the K-3).

In short, I would say that if you have anything prior to a K-5 the
upgrade to a K-3 will be amazing.
If you have a K-5, you have a very good camera that you could be happy
with for many years, but an upgrade to a K-3 would be significant (in
everything except dynamic range).
If you have a K-5ii, you already have most of the AF improvements seen
in the K-3 but not its other features (PRIME III-related throughput,
FPS, HDR, switchable AA, dual slots and, of course, 24MP).
If you have a K-5ii, the same things as the K-5ii apply with the
possible exception of the AA-related stuff.

In any event, Pentax has apparently achieved their objectives in
significantly moving the top end of the APS-C cameras, surpassing not
only themselves but also the field (if only temporarily). The fact
that Canikon CANNOT duplicate the switchable AA filter since they
don't use internal SR means that is many ways this is a lead that
Pentax could hold for a good while. If Pentax has improved the AF
system to the point that IT is no longer a compromise, then I really
think that they have shored up the only real vulnerability that they
have historically had.

Unfortunately I think you're wrong on that Bill. I did the research,
and if I can believe what I read, Nikon is not just another
Mitsubishi brand name, as Pentax is for Ricoh.

Nikon is part of the Mitsubishi Group "Keiretsu" and member companies
own shares of each others stock and therefore have a mutual interest
in one another's well-being. Nikon is an independent corporation in
that it's shares continue to be publicly traded and it reports
independent financial results separate from all other members of the
group. If it were struggling member companies of the group could
decide what to do. It has it's own executives and board of directors.

History we all know:

That 's far different from Asahi Optical (Pentax) ceasing to exist as
a corporation in 2008. When Hoya wanted to unload the Pentax camera
business in 2011, it created the subsidiary Pentax Imaging
Corporation. Ricoh bought all shares of that temporary entity and the
combined companies were called Pentax Ricoh Imaging Company. In 2013
it simply became Ricoh Imaging with Pentax as a brand. Hoya also
continues to use the Pentax name for the parts of the business it did
not sell to Ricoh, mainly the medical division.

Does that mean anything? It depends what one wishes to extrapolate.
What it says to me (and I believe you) is that Asahi Optical had a
long history of making bad decisions. That made it it vulnerable and
at risk. It led to it finally be acquired and becoming non-existent as
a corporate business entity. That of course is different than saying
you can't purchase a new Pentax camera.

Dual card slots on K-3

2013-11-12 Thread Stan Halpin
Minor detail: what happens if you only have one card in the K-3, and use slot
#2 rather than #1?

On the way out to dinner last night I grabbed the K-3, neglected to get the
card from the reader where I had been downloading some afternoon playing-around
shots. But I did have a card in the #2 card slot. When I remembered that #1 was
empty, I chose to leave #1 empty. No hiccup, no issue whatsoever.

Most of the time most people will probably use the camera as intended: with a
card in both slots, #2 used either for a wireless card, for the jpg destination
when shooting RAW+ , as a redundant backup when shooting RAW, or as a second
card to write to when #1 fills up. But shooting with only one card is allowed,
and the one card can be in either slot without any additional setup.

Re: Dual card slots on K-3

2013-11-12 Thread Igor Roshchin

Stan,

I am surprised that such a question was even raised: why would there be
any problem with only one card even in the 2nd slot?
If there were, - I'd say that would be a manifestation that
Pentax/Ricoh engineers are incompetent idiots, which never appeared to
be the case.
I think you are overthinking it. :-) (Or, maybe that's a sign that you
are thoroughly enjoying your new toy.)

The fact that you can use the card in the 2nd slot "as a second card to
write to when #1 fills up" -- automatically means to me that you can
continue shooting even if you took the first one out.

Cheers,

Igor

If, like me, you have a K5 with terminally broken auto focus, the K3 is
a very significant upgrade. I'm a detail junkie, which is why I
gravitated towards large format when film was king. For me, 24mp is a
very significant significant upgrade.
Going from the K20/K7 with their rather noisy Samsung sensors to the K5
was, for me, an epiphany in that I could actually shoot at ISOs that I
had previously only dreamed of. I never liked what came out of those
cameras above ISO 640. At the same time, I rarely find myself needing
anything as high as 6400 ISO, and the K5 isn't really significantly
better until 6400 and above. At 3200, they are practically a wash,
especially if you downsize the K3 image to the same size as the K5. The
K5 may have an edge at very high ISO, but it really isn't anything big.
The K3 is excellent, the K5 is marginally more excellent.
As of yet, I haven't touched on how the K3 compares to the K5's
handling. The K5 feels like an old camera compared to the K3. I've said
since the K5 came out that Hoya had made it as cheaply as they could,
cutting corners wherever they thought they could get away with it, and
the K3, to me anyway, proves me right. The K5 runs like an old nag put
away wet a few times too often compared to the K3. This is huge, as it
tells me that Ricoh is serious about what they are doing with the Pentax
brand, unlike Hoya, who I felt was trying to wring every last penny they
could out of it before tossing it to the curb.

Sounds like I get to stick with my current game plan: Wait for whatever
replaces the K-3 in a couple years (?!?!) and buy a used K-3 for $600.

Hopefully I can stick to that plan.

No. When I pointed out on another forum that Nikon was just a
Mitsubishi brand name, I was given a really long lecture about

Re: Dual card slots on K-3

2013-11-12 Thread Stan Halpin
Actually Igor, I was half expecting to get a "No Card" warning. All of the
instructions are very specific as to slot #1 or #2. JPEGs aways go on #2 under
RAW+. Card utilization is always #1 and then #2.

On the other hand, it makes sense that the logic is: a) try to write to card
#1; b) if card #1is full or otherwise unavailable, write to card #2.

Anyway, as I said, a minor detail. I'll leave it to someone else to explore the
deeper philosophical question of what happens if you try to shoot RAW+ when #2
is the only slot containing a card.

He's not a fan of the AF, which makes sense.
He also minimized the anti-aliasing option which is a useful feature in

Yet he was impressed with (1) layout and ergonomics, and (2) how much you
get for your money.
That clip of water pouring over it should be used in ads everywhere.

Wow, those are beautiful! Impressive detail and sharpness.

I love the little birdies (mostly what we get around here, other than
waterfowl) but I don't think I've been able to do that well.

Lovely light, too.

Most impressive...

Boris, it looks like this image could have benefited from the use of a split

Old Tamron Lens Questions

2013-11-12 Thread John
I have been considering the purchase of a 25-35mm to something lens. In
the decision process I went into my drawer of previous lenses too
precious to sell. (translation: Once in the drawer, they get lost in the
memory ) Out came a Tamron screw mount short (35-135 f 3.5) Macro Zoom.

I don't remember this lens and do not understand how to use it. Having
an available adapter, it is now sitting on my istDS. I have no
questions on the zoom settings but don't understand the macro
settings. There are additional settings that change the focus slightly
by changing some focus point at the mount and allow the lens to be
focused closer to the subject at the long zoom end. There are
indicators on the bottom of the barrel of the lens and these range from
1:4 to 1:7. What are these indicators on the macro side trying to tell
me? It appears that there is not a great change in focus distance and
picture size as I move the lens setting from 1:4 to 1:7 and the image
does not seem to change radically as I move the zoom in and out although
the focus distance does decrease.

Is this a good learning tool or do I have an additional paper weight to
add to the collection? Can this lens be used on the K-series and what
is the impact on a full frame camera if one appeared? I would guess
that the coverage would be fine as it was designed for a film camera?

Thanks for reading this.

John from Mass.

Re: Old Tamron Lens Questions

2013-11-12 Thread Zos Xavius
Maybe the difference between 1:7 and 1:4 is not that much? It should
probably give you the closest focus at the wide end in macro mode if
it allows that. Some lenses will only lock into macro at a particular
focal length.

Those indicators tell you the maximum magnification.

A lot of macro zooms have you move the zoom to one end or the other of
the zoom range, then do something to the lens, twist it or something,
and then the zoom slider changes the focus rather than the focal length.

It is possibly a good tool for learning how to use google and see
if there is any documentation on the lens. Or any posts on the net
by someone else who has one, that you can ask.

Yes.

It should be at least as sharp as it was on filem.
You'll just notice the lack of sharpness more.

Re: Old Tamron Lens Questions

2013-11-12 Thread Darren Addy
John,
Taking a guess here, it sounds like you may have a Tamron Adaptall
lens with the m42 adaptall mount attached. (You could get a KM
adaptall mount to replace the m42 adaptall mount and save yourself the
need of an m42 to K adapter.

If it is an Adaptall lens, it is probably either a 22A or a 40A (model
number). Since you mention that it is macro at the LONG end, I'm
guessing it is the 22A:
http://www.adaptall-2.org/lenses/22A.html

If that is the lens, here are a couple of threads with sample images:
http://forum.mflenses.com/viewtopic.php?t=39934&view=previous
http://forum.mflenses.com/viewtopic.php?t=41767&view=previous

Otherwise the 40A page is here: http://www.adaptall-2.org/lenses/40A.html
That page says that it has the macro focus on the short end (35mm)

Blurbing again

2013-11-12 Thread Brian Walters

G'day all

It's taken the best part of 5 months but I've finally finished the
Blurb book of my trip around the western USA. It's based on the
travel blog I maintained during the trip.

I haven't received the printed copies yet - hopefully they'll be OK.
It's pretty much a personal record of the trip, and not intended to be
anything else, but if anyone would like a peek at the previews, they
are here:

http://lyons-ryan.org/southernlight/html/roadtripUSA.html

I had to do it in two volumes because I wanted premium paper and there
were too many pages for that option as a single book.

Probably mobo sushi Wednesday

2013-11-12 Thread Larry Colen
So far, John is the only one who has replied about dinner.

I think that Plan A will be Mobo Sushi in Santa Cruz:
http://mobosushirestaurant.com/

Zab can have her corrupter roll (unagi, garlic, basil and macadamia),
the rest of us can split another corrupter, and have some of the other
yummy selections.

After dinner, if people want we can do some night urban photography
on the Pacific Ave. Mall, and maybe hit one or both of the boutique
ice creameries:
http://www.missionhillcreamery.com/
http://thepennyicecreamery.com/

It's also very close to the Santa Cruz Wharf and other fun places
to play with cameras at night.

PESO: K-3 moon shot for Larry

2013-11-12 Thread Stan Halpin
I think it was Larry who suggested a shot of the moon with a reasonably good
lens . . .

This is with the DA* 300/4.0, ISO400. Conditions not quite ideal, patchy
clouds and mist, but this was at a relatively clear point.

I tried some other shots with the 60-250/4.0 but was never able to achieve a
good focus. I had a turkey perched, roosting in a tree with the moon over its
shoulder, but had no decent shots. Next time I'll start with that before my
hands get too cold.

Nice pic. Good to see. I once worked around the corner at Hearst, 224 w 57th. I
