Re: Boris PESO #16 - Seven Seas of Rhye
Boris, I greatly enjoyed this photo! It doesn't look as impressive when it is small. So, it has to be seen on the computer, when one can click on the photo and see it in a larger size. On the phone, it doesn't work (clicking bring up the next photo, at least in Opera on Android. It would be better without the flare, but when the image is large, it is less distractive. Way back when I was flying around in military jet, we had occasion to make an emergency landing at a USAF base. While I was on the tarmac, I saw a black U-2, with no markings of any sort, coming in for a landing. I whipped out my camera to record the event, and was suddenly surrounded by MPs with automatic weapons. I managed to calm them down by by identifying myself and giving up the film canister, but it was uncomfortable for a few moments. Re: How to fly with a tripod
Stan, Having flown quite a lot in the past few years, both domestically and internationally, I've seen some stubborn and arrogant airline employees (gate agents and flight attendants). On one of the regional flights, the flight attendant was demanding to gate-side-check the bag even after it was placed in the overhead compartment. When I, politely and calmly, asked her why, she refused to explain why ("just because I am in charge here") and called the security guy who threatened deplaning and arresting me if I had not allowed the bag to be placed to into the belly of the plane. Fortunately, that bag didn't have much of valuable things. ... and I've seen a few other stories with others on various flights. So, just keep in mind that the logic doesn't always work with some "local tzars" that enjoy the power. But I am sure you are aware of it. :-) Cheers, Igor Stanley Halpin Fri, 01 Apr 2016 11:07:19 -0700 wrote: ... Re: How to fly with a tripod
Carryon. This last year I have been on four regional flights in small regional-type planes, four flights domestically in 737-style planes or larger, three long-distance international flights on 757 or 767 planes, and four flights on non-U.S. carriers within South America. I strapped my Manfrotto 055CX3 to the outside of my LowePro camera backpack and walked it on the plane. Every time, no problem. I carried a small roll-on suitcase as my second allowed carry-on. The regional jets have very small overhead storage, not good for much more than a jacket, maybe a purse. One thing that may have helped me is that if/when the check-in or gate attendant thought to question the LowePro backpack, I could state with absolute certainty that I had been there, done that, and (a) would not gate check my valuable camera gear, but (b) knew without question that the LowePro would fit under the seat in front of me. So the small suitcase gets gate checked, the tripod gets unstrapped and goes overhead, and the backpack goes under the seat. The only time I had any issue was on a regional flight in Argentina. The luggage screener had never seen a tripod before. He had to call over a supervisor to identify it and verify that it wasn’t some strange weapon. I used to travel with an overlarge suitcase (24" rather than 22’’) and fit the tripod in among my clothes. It was a tight fit and required removing the head. Just carrying it on works much better for me. stan > On Apr 1, 2016, at 9:06 AM, Darren Addy wrote: > > No this isn't an April Fools post on how to accomplish the Wright > Brother's achievement, using nothing but a tripod; It is a request for > information on the best way to transport a tripod via commercial > airlines. > > I should have thought about this long before now, but... Re: The marketing ploy of 4k video in new (Ricoh) cameras
Bruce, I am glad that it was helpful to you, even if such an indirect way. :-) I had seen a more detailed article earlier, probably in 2014. That was more technical, comparing more details, and essentially showing that 4k is mostly good for still images as opposed to the action videos. I couldn't find that link today, but AFAIR, the conclusion was that doubling the refresh rate was a better improvement for a video than going 1080p -> 4K. Cheers, Igor PS. I just read the updates on the older story on the topic of 4k TV by the same auhtor: http://www.cnet.com/news/why-ultra-hd-4k-tvs-are-still-stupid/ I think those updates are somewhat indicative of how opinions of the "experts" can change with time. Photographers are allowed to take pictures in Hawaii
From today’s AP: HONOLULU (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union says it won't sue the state of Hawaii after officials agreed to stop citing people for taking photos from a sidewalk near the Honolulu International Airport. The ACLU of Hawaii said Tuesday the agreement reached with the state attorney general's office affirms the First Amendment right to take photographs in public. The dispute stems from a state sheriff citing an amateur photographer for photographing airplanes along Lagoon Drive without a permit. Re: How to fly with a tripod
A few experiences: Oslo - Newark 2004: a Sachtler 75 with a large Foba ballhead. Collapsed legs 80 cm long. SAS allowed it as carryon from Oslo, but not on the return flight. Wrapped the legs together with plastic tape, and it arrived safely in Oslo. Oslo - Forth Worth, Tx, 2007, same tripod in checked-in luggage both ways, wrapped in clothes inside a soft bag Flew via Amsterdam. Handle on ballhead broken on return flight between TX and Amsterdam. Changed planes in Detroit. UA first, then KLM. Manfrotto 455C with 40mm RRS Ballhead numerous times between Oslo and destinations in Europe, all good. Mostly as checked in, but SAS and Air France allowed it as carryon. The Sachtler in combination with a 55mm RRS ballhead traveled with me to Argentina for the Antarctica trip in 2009. On this trip I separated the legs and the head in the packing. Checked in luggage, huge soft bag and clothes. All good through SAS, BA and Aerolinas Argentinas. Used same strategy with an Induro carbon fibre pod and the RRS head to Svalbard in 2011 and to California in 2013. All good. Based on my experience, I think I'll stick to that strategy in the future too. However for short trips I use a small tripod that no airline has objected to as carryon. The rule of thumb for carryon seems to be 'less than 50 cm long and no sharp looking ends'. The marketing ploy of 4k video in new (Ricoh) cameras
As many other PDMLers, I just received the spam message from Ricoh about the new camera that produces "4k videos", WG-M2. And that's a big "selling point". (And in a way, it's an interesting camera, in part due to it's wide-angle lens...) What I am surprised is that it offers only 30 fps at 4k resolution (although 60 fps at 1080p). I am guessing that the bottleneck might be in the writing to the card part (on the CPU that is handling all that). And it is known about the refresh rate playing much bigger role in the clarity of the video compared to the number of pixels. See, e.g. here: http://www.cnet.com/news/ultra-hd-4k-tv-refresh-rates/ Aah, those marketing ploys... Re: How to fly with a tripod
My best legs for travel are the Feisol CT3442 Tournament legs which pack down with head attached into a thinly padded case that is 19x5 inches in size. I can stuff this in my rollaway or strap it to my carry-on camera bag. I've brought it through security on at least a dozen flights strapped to the camera bag without any issues from the inspectors. Re: PESO - b&w portrait of my wife as a Hollywood star
It's got to be some Javascript-blocking stuff, John (and Ann). You use that, I believe? I just put it on Tumblr. Try this link: http://off-axis.brucemwalker.com/image/142075134442 Lack of shadows? Take another look. :) Mucho shadow there, especially in the lower third. As for retouching: I know. I have two prints of before and after on Joan Crawford. Six hours of working with a pencil on the negative by the retoucher, and the glam polish is there. Now that meticulous retouching applied much less to older women that he photographed. He did not turn them into freaks, just reduced and softened lines in a pleasant way. I can safely assure you that I did serious retouching to my wife who is in her mid 70's -- shh! I have the definitive book on the man and his work, and I have studied it thoroughly. "George Hurrell's Hollywood: Glamour Portraits 1925-1992", Mark A. Vieira. The author had access to Hurrell like few others and he documents his various "periods" and the lighting and retouching techniques he employed. Other than using gridded silver reflectors rather than fresnel spots I followed the way he worked during the 1940's very closely. https://www.amazon.ca/George-Hurrells-Hollywood-Portraits-1925-1992/dp/0762450398/ Thanks for your comments, John! Re: How to fly with a tripod
Darren: I haven't taken any tripods (accept for Ultra Pod 2 that is tiny) on the airplane. If I did, I would be concerned on the elements of the head, such as adjustment handles (those that look as a stick with a knob at the end), - those could be bent if something heavy is placed on top of the tripod. But maybe I am underestimating those... Also, I would be concerned about various plastic knobs on the head. For those, I'd consider wrapping a large-bubble bubble wrap around the head (with a clear packing tape on top and/or rubber bands below the head). This is unrelated to the concern about the tripod, but Paul's comment regarding Pelican hard cases brought up some important aspects. The advantage of those is not just in the protection they provide against the impact, but also the fact they don't have zippers, as zippers can be easily "unlocked" with a pen: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/article-2626254/Shocking-video-shows-easy-break-suitcase.html (I disagree with that guy about non-TSA-approved locks: bags get checked behind the scene, and they have no way of calling you to open the lock.) But at the same time, I would not fully trust the "Travel Sentry" locks (aka TSA-approved, etc.). You can read this article, why: http://arstechnica.com/security/2015/09/video-3d-printed-tsa-travel-sentry-keys-really-do-open-tsa-locks/ But even, if the keys were not compromised by Washington Post, there are plenty of unscrupulous people who have access to those keys in the world. Especially travelling internationally, I would be very much concerned checking in any of high-tech items in the luggage. Still, a case that makes it more complicated to get in quickly probably makes sense. But it also attracts more attention (as the entire case can "walk away"). One alternative is to ship via UPS/FedEx. But that gets expensive for international shipments. But if you are on assignment, and want to assure your gear shows up when needed, that might be worst the cost. You can also considering "wearing" things on you in a multipocket jacket: http://globaltravelclothing.com/ http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/01/13/AR2011011305749.html Some of those remind me of the "photo vests" that many here are familiar with. (I've been going around the weight limitation for the carry-on items in Europe by placing some of the lenses and the flash from my photo bag into my jacket's pockets, but it was a regular jacket.) For Sale Friday: lots of gear
Hi! Well, ultimately I got bitten (or stung, or what is the term) by USD 700 with that DA* 16-50 affair. So, I'm pulling the plug on Pentax to compensate for the losses. Oly EM-1 fully suits my needs. Below is the list of gear that I'd like to sell. I don't intend to make profit but I don't want to be taken advantage of either. * Pentax K-5, with OEM battery grip and extra OEM battery. I am the original owner. Galia (my older) was shooting with it too, but under my supervision. Slightly more than 20k shutter actuations. Comes with box and if you feel like it - original paperwork in Hebrew. It also has OEM viewfinder magnifying eye cap. I may not have camera strap and original eye cap. I will try to find them, but I cannot make promises. * Sigma 24-60/2.8 - fast full frame standard zoom. Comes with hood, original box, pouch and matching Sigma protective filter. * Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5 - the original, non-SDM version. Everything is fine, but being my workhorse for few years, the crinkle finish has starte to wear off. Otherwise - rather fine lens. * FA 50/1.4 - I bought this one from William Robb. This is rather very fine copy. It was brought fully to spec by Bill and it is a sharp copy too. Comes with OEM lens hood. * Metz 50 AF-1 flash. I am not 100% sure if it has the latest firmware, but it has one that is fully compatible with Pentax K-5. Comes with its native diffuser. I should also have its USB cable somewhere. You might want to look up on the web, whether a firmware upgrade is necessary to use it with K-3 and more modern cameras. Really excellent reliable flash. * Assortment of Pentax lens pouches. If you have any specific one that you're looking for - let me know - I'll see if I have one. * Somehow I appear to have FA 100/3.5 and FA 50/1.7 carton boxes. If you need them for any reason - they're yours. Also one non-Pentax item. I bought a bit more Ricoh GXR gear than I really need. * Camera body, AF 28mm module (18.3/2.5 lens), viewfinder, one extra 3rd party battery. Also lens adapter that turns the lens into 21 mm one. Few points about this set: - I'd like to sell it as a set, not to split it into parts. - Due to known issue with viewfinder data bus, I glued the viewfinder so that it does not flip out. So, it works as regular (D)SLR viewfinder, motionless - The module appears to have caught a piece of hair-like dust on the sensor. It is in the corner, but it is there. - I bough this set originally hoping to take advantage of the wide adapter. However, the adapter is for smaller sensor Ricoh cameras. It is original adapter, but on 28 mm module, the extreme corners are softer that I would like. It may suit you quite well, nonetheless... I don't set prices, again because I'd rather this gear stayed in the PDML family. So, if you feel like it - give me a shout off-list and I am certain, I will not disappoint you in terms of conditions. Please notice, that for obvious reasons, I will not be offering refunds or returns. Please be sure to ask as many/much questions as you'd like - I will answer them to the best of my ability. FSF: NOS Tamron SP 52BB 90mm f2.5 Adaptall & adaptall mounts
I've got a new, unused, in the box Tamron SP 52BB 90mm f2.5 Adaptall that was purchased from a local camera store that was going out of business. As you know, the beauty of the Adaptall system is that you can change the mounts with the proper Adaptall adapter Also, I've got a bunch of original Adaptall mounts, so if you need a specific one, I might have it. This is still in the box with the hard Tamron case and all paperwork. $139 plus actual shipping to your door. You can find them for less, but certainly not NOS. -- “The Earth is Art, The Photographer is only a Witness ” ― Yann Arthus-Bertrand, Earth from Above -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: PESO - b&w portrait of my wife as a Hollywood star
Agreed; it could use more fill in the lower part. I was trying to get more from the white reflector and got about 2/3 stop less than I hoped for. But my wife prefers the dark and the shadows, so I left it as-is rather than pull it up in post. Tons of latitude in the raw, so it would have been a simple curves tweak. Thank you very much, Jack. And thank you also Nicole, Darren, Mark C, Marco, Bulent and Paul, and to everyone who looked. She is way pickier than my other models and has forced me to work really hard to get to the point where she's portrayed the way she wants to be seen. She likes this one. :) > I love the way that her face is the one brightly lit subject in all of that > dark negative space. I have some tighter framed shots I have't processed yet. Pretty sure I did a closeup like you're describing. > By the way, did you also process it in color? I can't help but be curious > about that as well. Yes, my workflow is to post-process entirely in colour then in the final step convert it to b&w. But we shot this set intending to have them in b&w and we did not spend any time harmonizing the colours. Colour was used to get specific tones in the b&w rendering, so the b&w is significantly better than the colour raw. I always do, Dan But in or out of the box - at the moment the only things that I think are good enough and fit were not taken with a Pentax :-( actually, the real problem is the literal boxes the possible candidates are in :-) so dont nag ann On 4/1/2016 8:56 AM, Daniel J. Re: How to fly with a tripod
I’ve sent a tripod as baggage many times in a zippered case. No problems. Tripods are pretty tough, even if they get tossed. I’ve also shipped cameras as baggage, although those were in Pelican hard cases, with airline legal combination locks. Again, everything arrived safely. Pro photogs do it all the time. It’s part of the job. > On Apr 1, 2016, at 9:06 AM, Darren Addy wrote: > > No this isn't an April Fools post on how to accomplish the Wright > Brother's achievement, using nothing but a tripod; It is a request for > information on the best way to transport a tripod via commercial > airlines. > > I should have thought about this long before now, but... How to fly with a tripod
No this isn't an April Fools post on how to accomplish the Wright Brother's achievement, using nothing but a tripod; It is a request for information on the best way to transport a tripod via commercial airlines. I should have thought about this long before now, but... I've got a "normal" Manfrotto (good sized) tripod. I'm going to take the 3-way head with. I've got the Manfrotto soft (zippered) case for it. Is that good enough to trust to the gorillas that throw baggage around? I can pack with some bubble wrap in there, if that will help. Alternative suggestions? Thanks in advance. PS... I plan on carrying-on a backpack with camera video gear that is going with. My clothes suitcase can be checked-in.

Re: Return of the prodigal lens
Appears to be working nicely. How do you get flickr to show the lens you are using? On 3/31/2016 9:33 PM, Larry Colen wrote: My 16-50 returned on Monday. I haven't done any sort of serious testing with it, but it seems to be OK. I had noticed some poppies up the street from me, so here's a silly set of flower photos, where the lens basically passed the smoke test. https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157664294614214 Speaking of the smoke test, I should go tighten the battery clamp down on my miata.
