I don't think any of those things would have happened - it was an abbey, full
of monks. It would have been licentiousness, greed, usury, fornication,
gluttony and probably idolatry, otherwise Henry VIII would not have dissolved
it, surely.

The monasteries and abbeys were a kind of corporate, multinational organisation
owing their allegiance to Rome, populated by powerful and ambitious men at the
top. They controlled enormous agricultural holdings and acted as a giant wealth
magnetic, sucking money out of the poor, whom they exploited ruthlessly by
lying to them about their souls, preventing them from getting an education and
bamboozling them into believing that their position at the bottom of society
was ordained by god and therefore unchangeable. Nuns were little more than the
monks' sexual playthings, and other woman were beneath acknowledgement as human
beings.

The place is vast, and extremely impressive (that's a family with a stroller in
the lower left corner).

It was built in 1132-1147, and was a monastery until Henry VIII dissolved them
in 1539.  Besides the batterings of nature, various owners sold off or used the
stone as building material to reduce the place to ruins.

Seriously, I hope it works. Can't imagine that any bike could come to market

But hey, if he can do it, great!

Would be concerned about how waterproof it really is. I sure hope that salt

For now I'll be keeping it real with steel...

Very interesting craft. It really sounds to be more than capable on both land

I'll never get one. Even if I could afford one they're just not my thing.

I wonder though, how loud are they? Jet Skis and other PWCs are very loud (I

around the wildlife park at the bottom of my street they are loud enough to be

I hope hope the craft you reviewed are a bit quieter, although if they go 40

Great for the ice fishers concerned about getting stranded when their ice turns

Re: OT: Playing in the dirt and the water

2012-10-14 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Just curious.

I assume that every PWC that buzzes the shoreline of Lake Ontario meets those
same government noise standards, and they are loud.

Having motor and non-motor lakes is a great idea unless one lives by a motor
lake and is bothered by the noise. Personally I am more worried about how the
noise disturbs the wildlife; hardly fair to ask them to move.

Regular motorboats and cabin cruisers aren't loud, PWCs are. The only thing
louder are cigarette boats (I'm not sure if that's what they're called but
they seem patterned after the cigarette boat racers). Those suckers' roars can
be heard for kilometres across open water.

I didn't find the noise level annoying while riding it. I know it has to meet
government standards. In Michigan we have all-sports lakes and motor-free
lakes. So those who want to get away from the noise have an alternative. Of
course many of the big metro-area lakes are all-sport, but I would guess there
are several hundred motor-free lakes in the tri-county area.

one of the chaps I was at school with is now one of the world's leading

What whale photographers mostly get, apparently, is the hump.

RE: OT and not OT - Landmark Preservation in NYC

2012-10-10 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
I agree. In this town we are fast losing our older.buildings (many of which
have so much character) to the wrecking ball so ugly fifty floor condos can go
up.

These new buildings are so cheaply built that a local study estimates that the
average life expectancy for these atrocities is 25-40 years. That means some
condo owners will have their building fall down before they're done paying
their mortgage.

One building has been shedding its plate glass windows during windstorms
causing the closure of a major downtown street and a multi-million dollar
refit. Luckily no pedestrians or passing motorists were injured by the falling
glass.

But I digress; this is about historic designations.

I'm in favour but the counterpoint is that once your building is so designated
its value plummets. One is restricted in what renovations are permitted and
because any renovations must be in keeping with the original
architecture/design permitted renos are very expensive. Unfortunately these
buildings end up being white elephants. Everyone loves them, no one wants to
buy them.

frank

the on topic aspect is that I took all the photos in my Back In the Day
Calendar with my old Pentax Kx'en. Except for one taken in 1971 with a
 RICOH(!)

This was in todays NY times (at least the online version) I'm right in
the middle of the area (7th st between 1st and 2nd ave) breathing a
 sigh of relief

 http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/09/landmarks-commission-
 approves-east-village-historic-district/

that's great - it's nice living in a historic place, and knowing it will be
more or less properly looked after. Maybe they'll turn it into a World
Heritage site.

RE: PESO: Noise purple-fringing can be the least of your problems...

2012-10-10 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
I don't think that's a pedestrian image at all. It's a lovely moment between
two young adults, enhanced by beautiful light.

I can't begin to feel your pain. It is a parents greatest nightmare that they
should outlive a child of theirs.

My deepest condolences to you and your family. May you some day find some
comfort in that beautiful photo.

I hope you'll indulge me sharing with you a very pedestrian image. I
tripped across it today, while moving some files between computers.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pixelsmithy/8075200561/in/photostream/
The young lady on the left is my daughter, Raven, and her husband, to
the right, is now a widower and single parent of their child who will
be 2-years-old in May. She was killed in a car accident this past
June, and finding this particular image today hit me pretty hard. The
accident happened just a month short of their 5-year anniversary.

I guess it is a reminder of how even the most technically flawed of
images can still be priceless, and it is also a reminder to keep all
things in a proper perspective. Those of you that are parents, give
your kids a big hug a kiss the next time you see them (and every
time after that).

G'day all

Another excellent and varied gallery - some a bit whimsical, some
nicely old and decrepit. And an attractive entry in the Open Gallery.

Some personal favs:

Fotografando by Luiz
The Unexpected Doorkeeper by Filip
Blinded by Matthew
Blue on White by Jan
PS by Bruce
Fort Leaton by Kevin

As usual, you'll find the gallery here:

http://pug.komkon.org/

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous Gallery there)

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not
infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the
gallery, let me know.

+

For November the theme is 'Prime Time' for photos taken with a prime
lens. This is pretty much an Open Gallery.

Submit here:

http://pug.komkon.org/submit/

Submission Guidelines here:

http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html

The main requirements are:

* Max. pixel dimensions: 800 x 800 pixels
* Max file size: 300k
* Third party equipment is acceptable provided either the camera body
or lens used is Pentax.
* If you embed a colour space in the image, it should be sRGB to
ensure that the image is displayed correctly on line.
* Nominal closing date for submissions: 31 May.

Re: Geso Fall colour trip # 2

2012-10-09 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
At one point most if not all of our electricity came from water turbines. I
think that Niagara Falls was the first waterfall to be used to develop
hydro-electric power in this province.

Eventually much larger hydro-electric projects were developed up north so huge
rows of high tension wires came into the southern cities from these generation
stations.

You can see some towers in the top picture (Hydro lines II).

In fact our electric utilities are called hydro: Toronto Hydro, Ontario
Hydro, Hydro Quebec, etc. Around these parts the word hydro is a synonym for
electricity. Just got my hydro bill. They put up the hydro rates again!

I believe that we now get more of our electricity from thermal and nuclear
plants but we still get hydro out of our wall sockets.

Btw, great pix, Dave!

Re: OT Happy Thanksgiving........

2012-10-08 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Yes.

We use turkey gravy to make poutine. Sometimes we mix stuffing in with the
cheese curds.

Okay, I just made that up but damn if that doesn't sound amazing! Surely
someone else has done it. It's just too perfect not to have already been done.

Too bad it wouldn't be vegan; I'll never be able to try it.

And in all seriousness, agree with Tim: I think our Thanksgiving culinary
traditions are about the same as yours. Turkey with trimmings, cranberry sauce,
pumpkin pie smothered in fake whipped cream.

Me, I am planning a Thanksgiving vegan cholent (a Jewish root vegetable and
chickpea stew - yummers!)

We have pro football on Thanksgiving, too.

This year my Montreal Alouettes play the Winter-peg Blue Bombers and in the

the Toronto Argo-Nots.

Actually the CFL is great to watch because three downs and a very wide field
put a premium on passing. Much excitement!

Hi!

I am approximately 1,500 messages behind in my PDML folder *sigh*.

Yet, we're starting to get our images processed, sorted and so on. We
plan to post a series of PESOs - one for each day of our travel and
featuring a picture by both of us (whenever we both were shooting) for
each such day.

So here is the beginning:

http://pentax-ways.blogspot.co.il/2012/10/peso-2012-39-arriving-to-usa.html

We were fortunate to have visited Chicago and great many thanks go to
Bob and Lynn and their kids who extended the warmest welcome to us.

RE: PESO shadows of blues

2012-10-07 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Great photo, Larry! Very stylized, their pose reminds me of a publicity photo
from the forties.

Btw did your friend Marco use a macro?

(Back in the early days of eBay before it was taken over by big retail
establishments and lots of camera stuff was being sold by people who didn't
know cameras I always laughed when someone posted a marco lens for sale...)

;-)

I showed my friend Marco what I was doing and he grabbed his camera to give it

Anyway, the other day he was sitting waiting for a call. I liked the was things
looked so I snapped and was pleased with the result:

I always wondered if that really means commandos don't wear
undergarments, and if not, why not?

There are few opportunities to change your underwear if you're out on a
long range patrol. Undergarments get a bit too ripe from the
accumulation of funk. Even if you wear boxers they rot after a while.

Okay, back to the matter at hand: another wonderful gallery, Derby!

It's a fall flowering crocus that was in bloom a couple of weeks ago.

Haven't shot stills in ages - certainly not for a paying customer! This
is a graphic design colleague I've known for about 25 years and she
wanted some portraits for her website and CV and so I popped over this
morning with Stef's tatty old EOS 1D (yes - 4 megapixels) an EF 28-135,
420EX flash and the venerable SMC A*85/1.4..

http://www.cottysnaps.com/blu.html

PS the Cottysnaps.com website will soon disappear as it gets 'parked'.
I'll incorporate the stills into my seeingeye.tv website in due course,
so if you're reading this on archive weeks down the road, tough shit ;-)

And for those who don't get the reference:

http://www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/song-midis/Hedgehog_Song.htm

When I saw the hedgehog finger puppet, I could not help but think of this song.
I've named it Bugger, the hedgehog.

The Hedgehog Song
(Heather Wood)

You can bugger the bear, if you do it with care,
In the winter, when he is asleep in his lair,
Though I would not advise it in spring or in fall--
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

If you're feeling quite coarse, you can bugger the horse,
Or the palfrey, the jennet, the stallion (with force),
You can bugger the donkey, the mare, or the mule,
Though to bugger the pony is needlessly cruel.

You can bugger the ox (if you stand on a box)
And vulpologists say you can bugger the fox,
You can bugger the shrew, though it's awfully small--
But the hedgehog cvan never be buggered at all.

Herptologists gasp you can bugger the asp,
Entymologists claim you can bugger the wasp.
If an insects your thing, man, then just have a ball--
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

And the elephant too, that you meet in the zoo,
Can be buggered if you are sure just what to do,
You will need a large mattress upon which to fall--
But the hedgehog cvan never be buggered at all.

You can bugger the bees if your down on your knees,
You can bugger the termites with terminal ease
You can bugger the beetle, the ladybug (bird!) too,
There's no end to the buggering that you can do.

You can bugger the cat if it isn't too fat
You can bugger the rabbit you draw from your hat
You can bugger the shark that you've chased in your yawl--
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

You can bugger the ermine, and all other vermine,
Like rats, mice, and roaches, if you're not discernin'.
You can bugger the dog, it will come when you call--
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

Although Mr. Tiggy is not very big, he
Avoids with great ease those who fancy his arse.
He just curls in a ball, shows his prickles and all--
And the would-be seducer leaves him in the grass

If you're that kind of fool, and you have a long tool,
Do it with a giraffe, if you stand on a stool,
Catch a yeti, who lives in the snows of Nepal--
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

For the hedgehog escapes the posterior rapes
Performed upon others of different shapes
Those who run, swim, or slither, they get it withal--
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

It is said, if you try, you can bugger the fly,
Or the swallow as it skims so skillfully by,
Use a noose or a net, or lime (if you've the gall)--
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all

You can bugger the cow (I will not tell you how),
Or the boar, or the piglet, the shoat or the sow,
You can bugger the ass as it stands in the stall--
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

You can order or shoo 'im, or run a knife through 'im
The one thing you cannot do is stick it to 'im.
If you try to seduce 'im, you'll end in a fix,
His prickles defend him against rampant pricks.

You can bugger the ram, you can bugger the lamb,
You can bugger the ewe, though the wether's a sham,
You can bugger the tiger (it may caterwaul)
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

You can bugger the seal, you can bugger the eel,
You can bugger the crab, though they say it can't feel,
You can bugger the bat as the night casts its pall,
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

You can bugger the snake (hold it down with a rake),
Though to bugger the quetzal may be a mistake.
You can bugger the billy, the nanny, the kid,
But to bugger the hedeghog just cannot be did.

You can bugger the slug, though it messes the rug,
You can bugger the different species of bug,
Or do it with a snail, if you slow to a crawl,
But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all.

At the end of the day, when you've had your rough way
With all of those creatures, you'll just have to say
That damned Erinaceous has been my downfall--
For the hedgehog can never be buggered at all!

Some dozen years ago I authored a commercial for Dodge Ram that had the truck

company that shot it – on Mammoth Mountain in California – used one big soft
box mounted on a crane to simulate moonlight and several huge strobes to
simulate lightning flashes. And, of course, a Hollywood rain machine, which
is basically a giant overhead sprinkler, and several smoke machines to make
fog. Some PAs were assigned to climb trees, so they could drop branches down
on the truck as it passed. We even had a wolf who appeared to come snarling
out of the bushes, although he was actually shot in a studio and edited in
later. The sound track was a woman singing Steppenwolf's Born to be Wild.

I don't' have the commercial on line, but I have a still I shot that I took
with my LX. Don't remember what lens for sure, but it was probably the
M200/4. I just opened the shutter in auto exposure mode and waited for a
lightning bolt to provide enough illumination and close the shutter. Seen
here before, but probably not in the last ten years. Note the heavy grain.
Probably ISO 800 film. We used to think that was okay. I was kind of shocked
to see the grain when I opened this file today. Hadn't looked at it in ten
years or so. Perhaps the grain works here, although it generally seems more
 appropriate in BW photography.

The idea is that you can tilt it in such a way that it both lights the car
and creates an artificial horizon, reflected in the car. They're most often
used with bulbs (sodium vapor lamps I believe), rather than strobes, since
that makes it easier to set up the lighting. Plus, the same box can be used
for television production as well as stills. They're usual augmented with a

chrome and polished areas to improve their contrast in the shot.

When I did a table-top shoot of my light meter for a blog article, I
used my hand as a flag to block direct light from the 24 softbox onto
the LCD display. That made an enormous difference to the meter's final

I've been shooting cars with flash for more than thirty years, both night
and day. It isn't a bad idea, but it can be tricky. I don't think it will
help you achieve nice compositions in a crowded showroom, but it can work
well as fill in daylight or as illumination at night.

I used flash for fill on this dreary day shot. It ended up edge-to-edge on
the front page of the Times auto section. I was low enough to avoid
 reflection problems, and
