I don't think any of those things would have happened - it was an abbey, full of monks. It would have been licentiousness, greed, usury, fornication, gluttony and probably idolatry, otherwise Henry VIII would not have dissolved it, surely. The monasteries and abbeys were a kind of corporate, multinational organisation owing their allegiance to Rome, populated by powerful and ambitious men at the top. They controlled enormous agricultural holdings and acted as a giant wealth magnetic, sucking money out of the poor, whom they exploited ruthlessly by lying to them about their souls, preventing them from getting an education and bamboozling them into believing that their position at the bottom of society was ordained by god and therefore unchangeable. Nuns were little more than the monks' sexual playthings, and other woman were beneath acknowledgement as human beings. Very interesting craft. It really sounds to be more than capable on both land and water. You said it's expensive so I have to say I was surprised when I saw the price - much lower than I expected. I'll never get one. Even if I could afford one they're just not my thing. I wonder though, how loud are they? Jet Skis and other PWCs are very loud (I suspect they're louder at shore than the operators realize). When I'm walking around the wildlife park at the bottom of my street they are loud enough to be disturbing, especially when they are close to shore (as so often seems to ve the case). I hope hope the craft you reviewed are a bit quieter, although if they go 40 mph I can't imagine they would be. Re: OT: Playing in the dirt and the water
Just curious. I assume that every PWC that buzzes the shoreline of Lake Ontario meets those same government noise standards, and they are loud. Having motor and non-motor lakes is a great idea unless one lives by a motor lake and is bothered by the noise. Personally I am more worried about how the noise disturbs the wildlife; hardly fair to ask them to move. Regular motorboats and cabin cruisers aren't loud, PWCs are. The only thing louder are cigarette boats (I'm not sure if that's what they're called but they seem patterned after the cigarette boat racers). Those suckers' roars can be heard for kilometres across open water. Of course many of the big metro-area lakes are all-sport, but I would guess there are several hundred motor-free lakes in the tri-county area. Dave The school I attended required every first year student to have a medium format camera when I started it back in 2005. RE: OT and not OT - Landmark Preservation in NYC
I agree. In this town we are fast losing our older.buildings (many of which have so much character) to the wrecking ball so ugly fifty floor condos can go up. These new buildings are so cheaply built that a local study estimates that the average life expectancy for these atrocities is 25-40 years. That means some condo owners will have their building fall down before they're done paying their mortgage. One building has been shedding its plate glass windows during windstorms causing the closure of a major downtown street and a multi-million dollar refit. Luckily no pedestrians or passing motorists were injured by the falling glass. But I digress; this is about historic designations. I'm in favour but the counterpoint is that once your building is so designated its value plummets. One is restricted in what renovations are permitted and because any renovations must be in keeping with the original architecture/design permitted renos are very expensive. Unfortunately these buildings end up being white elephants. Everyone loves them, no one wants to buy them. Re: Geso Fall colour trip # 2
At one point most if not all of our electricity came from water turbines. I think that Niagara Falls was the first waterfall to be used to develop hydro-electric power in this province. Eventually much larger hydro-electric projects were developed up north so huge rows of high tension wires came into the southern cities from these generation stations. You can see some towers in the top picture (Hydro lines II). In fact our electric utilities are called hydro: Toronto Hydro, Ontario Hydro, Hydro Quebec, etc. Around these parts the word hydro is a synonym for electricity. Just got my hydro bill. They put up the hydro rates again! I believe that we now get more of our electricity from thermal and nuclear plants but we still get hydro out of our wall sockets. Re: PESO Nanny Ogg was wrong
It does rather go on then, doesn't it? I kind of got the idea about a third of the way through the song: You can bugger many things but not a hedgehog. Then I stopped reading. I've named it Bugger, the hedgehog. The Hedgehog Song (Heather Wood) You can bugger the bear, if you do it with care, In the winter, when he is asleep in his lair, Though I would not advise it in spring or in fall-- But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all. If you're feeling quite coarse, you can bugger the horse, Or the palfrey, the jennet, the stallion (with force), You can bugger the donkey, the mare, or the mule, Though to bugger the pony is needlessly cruel. You can bugger the ox (if you stand on a box) And vulpologists say you can bugger the fox, You can bugger the shrew, though it's awfully small-- But the hedgehog cvan never be buggered at all. Herptologists gasp you can bugger the asp, Entymologists claim you can bugger the wasp. If an insects your thing, man, then just have a ball-- But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all. And the elephant too, that you meet in the zoo, Can be buggered if you are sure just what to do, You will need a large mattress upon which to fall-- But the hedgehog cvan never be buggered at all. You can bugger the bees if your down on your knees, You can bugger the termites with terminal ease You can bugger the beetle, the ladybug (bird!) too, There's no end to the buggering that you can do. You can bugger the cat if it isn't too fat You can bugger the rabbit you draw from your hat You can bugger the shark that you've chased in your yawl-- But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all. You can bugger the ermine, and all other vermine, Like rats, mice, and roaches, if you're not discernin'. You can bugger the dog, it will come when you call-- But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all. Although Mr. Tiggy is not very big, he Avoids with great ease those who fancy his arse. He just curls in a ball, shows his prickles and all-- And the would-be seducer leaves him in the grass If you're that kind of fool, and you have a long tool, Do it with a giraffe, if you stand on a stool, Catch a yeti, who lives in the snows of Nepal-- But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all. For the hedgehog escapes the posterior rapes Performed upon others of different shapes Those who run, swim, or slither, they get it withal-- But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all. It is said, if you try, you can bugger the fly, Or the swallow as it skims so skillfully by, Use a noose or a net, or lime (if you've the gall)-- But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all You can bugger the cow (I will not tell you how), Or the boar, or the piglet, the shoat or the sow, You can bugger the ass as it stands in the stall-- But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all. You can order or shoo 'im, or run a knife through 'im The one thing you cannot do is stick it to 'im. If you try to seduce 'im, you'll end in a fix, His prickles defend him against rampant pricks. You can bugger the ram, you can bugger the lamb, You can bugger the ewe, though the wether's a sham, You can bugger the tiger (it may caterwaul) But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all. You can bugger the seal, you can bugger the eel, You can bugger the crab, though they say it can't feel, You can bugger the bat as the night casts its pall, But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all. You can bugger the snake (hold it down with a rake), Though to bugger the quetzal may be a mistake. You can bugger the billy, the nanny, the kid, But to bugger the hedeghog just cannot be did. You can bugger the slug, though it messes the rug, You can bugger the different species of bug, Or do it with a snail, if you slow to a crawl, But the hedgehog can never be buggered at all. At the end of the day, when you've had your rough way With all of those creatures, you'll just have to say That damned Erinaceous has been my downfall-- For the hedgehog can never be buggered at all! Some dozen years ago I authored a commercial for Dodge Ram that had the truck climbing a mountain at night in a storm. Barking Weasel, the production company that shot it – on Mammoth Mountain in California – used one big soft box mounted on a crane to simulate moonlight and several huge strobes to simulate lightning flashes. And, of course, a Hollywood rain machine, which is basically a giant overhead sprinkler, and several smoke machines to make fog. Some PAs were assigned to climb trees, so they could drop branches down on the truck as it passed. We even had a wolf who appeared to come snarling out of the bushes, although he was actually shot in a studio and edited in later. The sound track was a woman singing Steppenwolf's Born to be Wild. I don't' have the commercial on line, but I have a still I shot that I took with my LX. Don't remember what lens for sure, but it was probably the M200/4. I just opened the shutter in auto exposure mode and waited for a lightning bolt to provide enough illumination and close the shutter. Seen here before, but probably not in the last ten years. Note the heavy grain. Probably ISO 800 film. We used to think that was okay. I was kind of shocked to see the grain when I opened this file today. Hadn't looked at it in ten years or so. Perhaps the grain works here, although it generally seems more appropriate in BW photography. You need a studio with a superstructure above to mount one, and a lot of equipment to control it. The idea is that you can tilt it in such a way that it both lights the car and creates an artificial horizon, reflected in the car. They're most often used with bulbs (sodium vapor lamps I believe), rather than strobes, since that makes it easier to set up the lighting. Plus, the same box can be used for television production as well as stills. They're usual augmented with a number of flags and flats to fine tune the lighting. Besides a large soft light source you'd need to flag a lot of glass, chrome and polished areas to improve their contrast in the shot. When I did a table-top shoot of my light meter for a blog article, I used my hand as a flag to block direct light from the 24 softbox onto the LCD display.
