I think you misunderstood the point. We would not like to split up

regular building of revcheck info, providing services for translation
teams, etc.).
I need to set-up this for real, it 'kinda' works now, but misses some
parts (ie. for PDF). I hope get it this done later this week (as soon
as
I settled in here).
But, I don't see really why we need to have this
same box as a testbed for livedocs; I don't really want people messing
with the set-up of this machine.
I myself would be fine with a different testbed. Our first goal is to
make regular builds work again for the often requested formats
(including PDF).

Then if it is done, it would be nice to set up a server with public
web accessibility to host stuff which helps documentation authors and
translators cope with our system (revcheck outputs, readable build
logs, maybe even websites hosted on that machine containing
information for translation teams, or at least links to the team
websites - now every team has its website elsewhere, etc). This should
be the basis for the documentation team website, which would host the
dochowto too. Given that maintaining yet another machine to publicly
test livedocs might not be a good idea, this machine would be able to
serve as a testbed for livedocs too.

Now what do you think about this two server setup suggestion?
I have a server that will be ready soon available for your use... you
need to draw up some guidelines for using it however, as it wouldn't be
under the immediate purview of the php systems team - so we'd need to
know the sorts of things you plan to do - i think it'd be ok to add
plain user accounts for php documentors - but we'd need to limit those
who get sudo.

real reason...

If you come up with a concrete list of what you need to do, we should

IIRC, the docs.php.net box is marked for phpdoc (but has some

I know you guys are overly prejudiced against systems@, but
why not run it on
our own systems??
Our experience was that the guys at systems are already overloaded
with work, and it would probably not be a good idea to put more load
on them. There are some long awaiting stuff, which would need that
new machine. The PDFs are not built for a long time now, and the so
called 'new machine' - which is probably building the HTML versions
right now - was said to have enough resources to build the PDFs.
There is a good amount of demand for them, and we need a strong
machine to build them.

Why do you need ssh access?
Because you always say that you're too busy ? :)
It's also handy for webmastering to have the ability of quickly
updating the site. For the last problem with bugs.php.net, all I was
able to do was sitting there at three a.m. in the morning fighting my
sleep to see if the errors were fixed. If only I was able to do
something like :

ssh bugs.php.net
cd /var/www/
cvs up -PAd

Which would break everything because all the systems are running a very
precise set of scripts and structures that someone not familiar with
would essentially break.

I understand that systems staff can be a little unresponsive - we do,
after all, have day jobs. If some other members of the project wished
to become responsible for infrastructure, i'm sure we'd consider
additions to the group.

Those will end up on the doc build machine, which is now
sc1.php.net
(and yes, they still need to be enabled)

So then it will be ideal to set up this docteam website on the same
machine, since a lot of the needed checkouts are already present
there...

I'm not too happy with that, as this box has no visible websites, it
doesn't even run apache or mysql. It's solely meant for rsync,
snapsbuilding and docbuilding.
Ah, all right... Understandable. Then the question is still up to
systems@ whether there is some willingness to set up a
machine/vhost, or we will better do with opening a vhost on some new
donated machine offered by a docteam member?

I am available for a full machine donation e.g. a server at
www.servercove.com ( nice guys as you can chose which distribution and
pretty fast on tickets) or ev1servers.net is something I could sponsor
(monthly fee). Any provider will do for me, as long as it is within
the same budget ;)
The docs leader could have the ssh access of everything they want as
my role would be of mere sponsor (and no, I don't need any particular
mention/link on the site..so it's a pure donation).

Let me know if there is any interest. I am ready
Regards
David Costa
The added benefit of the latter option would be that we will not be
reliant on the systems@ group for configuration changes, but the
site could still be registered as doc.php.net, and we can be more
flexible with its development and setup... The more I think about
it, the more I like this option :)

in an effort to negate the effect of the Sobig virus sending mail to

Any problems, just reply to this mail.

Actually, there are problems. Building the manual seems to a: take forever,
and b: causes rsync to fight with the cpu, which is not a good thing. Builds

OK,

because of the presence of phpdoc/zh (the bad checkin) it couldn't
checkout phpdoc-zh to it... so it got all hot and flustered. Same for
tw.

I have tar'ed the old zh and tw trees, and deleted them from phpdoc. zh
looks checked out now ok, so next build should see us a built (or not)
zh tree.

[PHP-DOC] latest builds

2002-11-24 Thread James Cox
Ok,

so the round of builds i kicked off the other day are done.

http://rsync.php.net/~imajes/manual/

seems the following langs didn't build correctly: ar, fi, fr, he, hk, kr,
pl, ro, ru, sk, sl, sv, tr.

So, i propose that we spend the next couple of weeks doing nothing but
fixing (or depreciating) builds.

Welcome to Operation "Manual" Fix!

what we need to do is check the build logs at the above mentioned url, and
correct the errors that it specifices when a make test (or a make
test_man_gen) is run. for translations that seem to be more or less non
existant, I propose that they just don't get built, and so we don't end up
with 5% translated builds for the site, which just seems to be silly.

Hmm, ok that seems to be it for now...

but lets get builds fixed. If there isn't enough of a build in a
translation, then let me know and i will remove it from the build tree.

so,

not having seen any replies to this, i'm slightly annoyed, but i'll assume
people didn't see my point / questions in the email.

so, i'll make it to the point:

do we need to run test_man_gen through the process, and if so, why is it
that half the translations aren't building?

[PHP-DOC] phpdoc building woes

2002-11-14 Thread James Cox
Guys,

So the reason that rsync isn't back on yet is that phpweb is _STILL_
building. That's like longer than 24 hours!!

:/local/mirrors/phpweb/manual/ar:$ zcat build.log.gz |head -n 1
>>> starting build at: Wed Nov 13 08:29:35 PST 2002
:/local/mirrors/phpweb/manual/ar:$ date
Thu Nov 14 17:04:47 PST 2002

i'm struggling to work out why it's taking so long. actually, no, they
haven't upgraded memory in this box yet, i don't think:

:/local/mirrors/phpweb/manual/ar:$ free
 total used free sharedbuffers cached
Mem:255612 251332 4280 0 13052 141968

Anyhow, the point is with whatever memory, it's damn slow! (general prod in
the direction of Gabor and Harmut... :))

to business. trying to build peardoc has some issues:

>>> running make html ...
touch .manual.xml
CONFIG_FILES=manual.xml CONFIG_HEADERS= ./config.status
creating manual.xml
/usr/bin/openjade -wno-idref -d html.dsl -V use-output-dir -t sgml
./phpdocxml.dcl manual.xml
/usr/bin/openjade:manual.xml:40:10:E: general entity "DevelopersGuide" not
defined and no default entity
make: *** [html/index.html] Error 1

this is only for a couple of the translations, so i'm not entirely sure why
i am seeing this bug. However, bad entities has caused a few translations to
fail, so some advice or fixage of source would be good!

phpweb has failed some:

for the ar translation:

/usr/bin/nsgmls:/local/mirrors/phpdoc/en/reference/curl/reference.xml:26:23:
E: character data is not allowed here
/usr/bin/nsgmls:/local/mirrors/phpdoc/en/reference/curl/reference.xml:27:9:E
: document type does not allow element "para" here
/usr/bin/nsgmls:/local/mirrors/phpdoc/en/reference/curl/reference.xml:34:12:
E: end tag for "section" which is not finished
/usr/bin/nsgmls:I: maximum number of errors (200) reached; change with -E
option
make: *** [test_man_gen] Error 1

no sure why i am seeing this... again, advice appreciated.

from fr trans:

/usr/bin/nsgmls:/local/mirrors/phpdoc/fr/reference/pgsql/functions/pg-field-
is-null.xml:22:39:E: non SGML character number 141
/usr/bin/nsgmls:/local/mirrors/phpdoc/fr/reference/zlib/functions/readgzfile
.xml:35:9:E: non SGML character number 143
/usr/bin/nsgmls:entities/missing-ids.xml:3:37:E: general entity
"MissingStuff" not defined and no default entity
make: *** [test_man_gen] Error 1

perhaps test_man_gen doesn't need to be run, and we should force generation
on the build machine?

so far, the following tranlations have been done:

12k ar
24M cs
24M de
24M en
23M es
12k fi
12k fr
12k he
12k hk
12k hu
24M it
24M ja
12k kr

basically any dir that is 12k didn't build, for some reason. mostly for
MissingStuff being ... well, missing :)

Thanks,

 James

[PHP-DOC] ZendAPI figures

2002-10-08 Thread James Cox

I'm in two minds about adding the figures into phpweb cvs, so the images
work. Whilst this would be a workaround fix to the general problem, it does
beg the question: what are the license restrictions in doing this? I don't
want to just add them there and find that actually i'm breaking some law in
doing so...

anyone know?

would it make sense to have all xml files with lower case names?

I notice this particularly with domxml stuff.

RE: [PHP-DOC] File /manual/en/tutorial.whatsnext.php (I assume other langs too?)

2002-07-28 Thread James Cox

as far as geoip stuff, expect to see it being used on the site in a day or
so, just tieing in a few tweaks.

as far as the linkage goes, i would prefer it as www.php.net/links.php --
that'll use geoip to find a mirror (anyway), and then it allows us to make
the phpweb version of the phpmanual rsyncable seperately to the site;
meaning we can distribute load better.

well, it was realised that given we're all on lists.php.net, it probably
means that we're doing php stuff, so having php in all the names is a little
redundant. All new lists are being created without the php prefix.

[PHP-DOC] cvs commits

2002-06-15 Thread James Cox

Hey,

Would phpdoc committers please remember that they don't need to commit each
file in cvs seperately, and it's usually only wise to do so if you wish to
log very specific different notices, or they are in vastly different parts
of the cvs repository.

eg, you could do this:

cd /your/src/dir/phpdoc-pl/reference/datetime/functions
cvs commit *

and go from that, as opposed to committing them one by one.

This cuts down on "duplicate" style cvs mail.

 thanks,

splitting up the docs is a good thing, i'm for it anyhow. i think we can
rename this appendix extending php 3, not phpdevel because I don't think
it's overly clear.

Guys, would there be uproar if we split up the cvs avail for each language?
ie, i'm not going to need to be touching hebrew, japanese style languages --
given i have no idea how to type them, etc :)

Also, splitting up the avail file will mean it should become easier to see
who's translating what; as well as removing the potential for mistakes.

since you seem to like using PHP as CGI, you don't need to add module

and change :

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
Action application/x-httpd-php "/arquivos de programas/php/php.exe"

the action line here should be /php/php.exe - NOT /arqui

this should work. let me know.

So, looking at your *apache* errors, I see a few obvious errors:

since you seem to like using PHP as CGI, you don't need to add module
lines -- delete those

and change :

ScriptAlias /php/ "c:/arquivos de programas/php/"
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
Action application/x-httpd-php "/arquivos de programas/php/php.exe"
-

the action line here should be /php/php.exe - NOT /arqui

this should work. let me know.

RE: [PHP-DOC] Server

apologies for not getting back to you.

this works fine with apache.

set cgi.force-redirect to 1 in php.ini and restart your computer.

it should work fine after that.

Subject: [PHP-DOC] Server

Hi everybody!
It's me again.
Please, somebody, help me! I need this PHP working fastly! I have a
page to finish and I cannot make it run even in Apache!
I tried Apache, PWS and Xitami, and in all of them it had the same
error when I tried to load a page in PHP:

"Security Alert! PHP CGI cannot be accessed directly.
This PHP CGI binary was compiled with force-cgi-redirect enabled. This means
that a page will only be served up if the REDIRECT_STATUS CGI variable is
set. This variable is set, for example, by Apache's Action directive
redirect.

You may disable this restriction by recompiling the PHP binary with
the --disable-force-cgi-redirect switch. If you do this and you have your
PHP CGI binary accessible somewhere in your web tree, people will be able to
circumvent .htaccess security by loading files through the PHP parser. A
good way around this is to define doc_root in your php.ini file to something
other than your top-level DOCUMENT_ROOT. This way you can separate the part
of your web space which uses PHP from the normal part using .htaccess
security. If you do not have any .htaccess restrictions anywhere on your
site you can leave doc_root undefined. If you are running IIS, you may
safely set cgi.force_redirect=0 in php.ini."

If somebody knows how to resolve it, please tell me!
Thank you all!

See ya!

RE: [PHP-DOC] Inteligent question about installing PHP

Hi Thales,

I specifically said that I would be investigating this today, and would get
back to you.

If you are having problems setting up apache, might i suggest
http://httpd.apache.org/ and check out the installation guide.

As far as PWS goes, I am investigating as to why it is not behaving as
reported.

Ok! Somebody said and I have to agree with you. It's not a stupid
question anymore, but I need an answer. I still couldn't make it work. Does
anybody help me?
The problem is that I can't install PHP under any kind of server. It
was functioning perfectly up to the day I had to reinstall my Windows (I
know it's also a stupid thing to do - work under Windows). I tried to
install PHP with the PWS, and when the server is running and I try to open a
file.php, I have this error message:

"Security Alert! PHP CGI cannot be accessed directly.
This PHP CGI binary was compiled with force-cgi-redirect enabled. This means
that a page will only be served up if the REDIRECT_STATUS CGI variable is

Well... Then I tried setting the cgi.force_redirect to 0, and the
same problem was related. So I almost punched the screen and I decided to
install Apache Server. Before I format my HD, I had Apache Server working
perfectly. But now it wanted to say something bad to me. When I install PHP
with Apache Server and do all the configurations in the httpd.conf and in
php.ini, I try to Start Apache and the answer is:

"Syntax error on line 1022 of c:/arquivos de

The error reported is in Portuguese. It says: "It's not possible to
find one of the library files that is need to run the application.". But the
file is in the location said and I already sent it to various directories
and it does the same message.
Does anybody help me? Save me, please!

This isn't a stupid question!

It should work if you set cgi.force_redirect to 0 in php.ini.

You may need to restart PWS for these settings to take effect.

Actually, when Jim Winstead moved to bz2 only i expressed reservations,
since i knew winzip can't handle it. I use stuffit/expander now exclusively,
'cause i love the double click lazy expansion, but if it comes to having
more people complain we'll just build the zips again.

and based on that assumption, i think that they are acceptable, but with
modification to state "without the acknowledgement of the PHP documentation
team, available at [EMAIL PROTECTED]". The point being there is that it
wouldn't be so prohibitive, but would allow for us to know of works that
will use it.

but that's just my 2 cents. :)

RE: [PHP-DOC] the PHP Documentation License

2002-02-09 Thread James Cox

Egon, from ZendAPI LICENSE file:

OPEN PUBLICATION LICENSE

I. REQUIREMENTS ON BOTH UNMODIFIED AND MODIFIED VERSIONS

The Open Publication works may be reproduced and distributed in whole or
in part, in any medium physical or electronic, provided that the terms of
this license are adhered to, and that this license or an incorporation of
it by reference (with any options elected by the author(s) and/or
publisher) is displayed in the reproduction.

Proper form for an incorporation by reference is as follows:

Copyright (c) 2000 by Zend Technologies, Ltd. This material may be
distributed only subject to the terms and conditions set forth in the Open
Publication License, v1.0 or later (the latest version is presently
available at http://www.opencontent.org/openpub/).

The reference must be immediately followed with the following terms:

A. Distribution of substantively modified versions of this document is
prohibited without the explicit permission of the copyright holder.
"Substantive modification" is defined as a change to the content of the
document, and excludes mere changes in format or typographical
corrections.

B. Commercial distribution of the work or derivative of the work in any
standard (paper) book form is prohibited unless prior permission is
obtained from the copyright holder.

Other than as otherwise set forth herein, commercial redistribution of
Open Publication-licensed material is permitted.

Any publication in standard (paper) book form shall require the citation
of the original publisher and author. The publisher and author's names
shall appear on all outer surfaces of the book. On all outer surfaces of
the book the original publisher's name shall be as large as the title of
the work and cited as possessive with respect to the title.

II. COPYRIGHT

The copyright to each Open Publication is owned by its author(s) or
designee.

III. SCOPE OF LICENSE

The following license terms apply to all Open Publication works, unless
otherwise explicitly stated in the document.

Mere aggregation of Open Publication works or a portion of an Open
Publication work with other works or programs on the same media shall not
cause this license to apply to those other works. The aggregate work shall
contain a notice specifying the inclusion of the Open Publication material
and appropriate copyright notice.

SEVERABILITY. If any part of this license is found to be unenforceable in
any jurisdiction, the remaining portions of the license remain in force.

NO WARRANTY. Open Publication works are licensed and provided "as is"
without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including, but not
limited to, the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a
particular purpose or a warranty of non-infringement.

IV. REQUIREMENTS ON MODIFIED WORKS

All modified versions of documents covered by this license, including
translations, anthologies, compilations and partial documents, must meet
the following requirements:

1) The modified version must be labeled as such.
2) The person making the modifications must be identified and the
modifications dated.
3) Acknowledgement of the original author and publisher if applicable must
be retained according to normal academic citation practices.
4) The location of the original unmodified document must be identified.
5) The original author's (or authors') name(s) may not be used to assert
or imply endorsement of the resulting document without the original
author's (or authors') permission.

V. GOOD-PRACTICE RECOMMENDATIONS

In addition to the requirements of this license, it is requested from and
strongly recommended of redistributors that:

1) If you are distributing Open Publication works on hardcopy or CD-ROM,
you provide email notification to the authors of your intent to
redistribute at least thirty days before your manuscript or media freeze,
to give the authors time to provide updated documents. This notification
should describe modifications, if any, made to the document.

2) All substantive modifications (including deletions) be either clearly
marked up in the document or else described in an attachment to the
document.

Finally, while it is not mandatory under this license, it is considered
good form to offer a free copy of any hardcopy and CD-ROM expression of an
Open Publication-licensed work to its author(s).

VI. ADDITIONAL LICENSE TERMS

A. Distribution of "substantively modified" versions of this document is
prohibited without the explicit permission of the copyright holder.
"Substantive modification" is defined as a change to the content of the
document, and excludes mere changes in format or typographical
corrections.

B. Commercial distribution of the work or derivative of the work in any
standard (paper) book form is prohibited unless prior permission is
obtained from the copyright holder.

Yea, i understand that - but it's not all that clear. Essentially, this is a
book, so being called "editor" appropriates certain things. :)

The point is, though, -- i don't obviously want to "demote" or "denegrate"
anything that anyone has done for the documentation project so far -- but i
think that a small "covert" number of people having all control is just not
useful here.

I also am not entirely sure either for the way to go forward. Obviously
nothing can be done unless all the "documentation group" agree... Egon,
would you be willing to give a call to arms to that collective so we may be
able to discuss things here?

Thanks for all your co-operations too. It's nice to see that there aren't
lots of people heavily opposed to change. :)

[PHP-DOC] the PHP Documentation License

2002-02-05 Thread James Cox

Hey Guys.

Ok, the first thing i want to mention before i get into the point of this
email is that i'm not in anyway trying to be difficult. What i am trying to
do is start discussion again about the documentation license. And yes, i've
read the archives, and no Egon, i don't want to hear from your lawyers.

This stuff has been spoken about before, but given that we now have ZendAPI
in the repository, (which, btw, i'm working on converting to phpdoc
proper...) this is perhaps time to standardize everything.

With those caveats spoken about, let me go on to the main point of this
message.

As it stands right now, the PHP Documentation does not go along with that of
the main PHP source license. This is bad for a number of reasons:

- a small number of people have "acclaim" for the documentation. And
whatever anyone might say, it's not edited by Stig and Egon, but by many
more people. People like Harmut should be on the front page of the manual,
and he's not - and that's a bad thing.

- a small number of people religiously hold control over the Documentation.
This is bad, and does not help or encourage new people to take part.

- If i want/see a need to make a change to the front page, i shouldn't
expect to be shouted at (unless i had broken it, etc).

So the point here is that - in theory - only a small number of people "own"
the license to the documentation. This doesn't really go along with the
whole aim of the project, at large.

As far as the actual license goes, GPL is probably not where we want to be -
it's something i personally shy away from due to it's restrictiveness. There
are many other open source documentation licenses, and we should probably be
looking at them.

Finally, yes i am aware that this is also due to be discussed at the meeting
in march, however i feel it's of importance (given zendapi's introduction to
PHP cvs) to start discussion now - and at least have some idea of current
general thoughts.

2002-02-05 Thread James Cox

have we ever decided on this? in our code do we go for tabs or spaces? Is

A suggestion for the manual pages:
It's time to categorize them into higher-level sections, e.g. built-in
modules, communication modules, db modules, security modules, graphics
modules etc. Even as an experienced user, I find it difficult to locate the
right section now. New users must be totally confused. Thank you.

yeah, but for some clients, i guess adding new lines etc may confuse them.
