the menu.opml file shows it's modified date as today so i guess it's
downloaded? Also the backup file has changed.

Where would i find the new menu option? perhaps I am just missing it.

I've maxed the buffer fullness and will keep an eye on the log

It should be Radio -> BBcIplayer -> Recent Tracks

This is just after the "Listen Live (non-UK)"

I think he menu.opml is read each time BBCiPlayer menu is picked so you
may need to go back to top level Player menu.

It's possible to link - just not sure what the UI would be useful or
even should look like (i.e. SB3, WebUI, Touch/radio) and then how much
effort should be expended only to be used by very few people.

Your long packet times coincide with "Unable to get players from SN:
Couldn't resolve IP address for: www.mysqueezebox.com, retrying in 900
seconds" which means you have a general network connection or DNS
problem and the long delay packets (effectively lost) are collateral
damage.

It worked for me, just below 'Listen Live (Non UK).

I'm not sure I'll use this feature very often, but I guess it's nice to

Squeezelite to Meridian USB Explorer DAC to PC speakers/headphones.
Wireless Xubuntu 16.04 laptop firefox/upplay or Android 'phone with

Also a Touch with EDO, plus spare, unused.

Whenever I looked Radio 4 tracks are always empty - you can create your
own menu entry with *bbc_radio_fourfm* instead of say *bbc_radio_two* to
check it out. Similarly I didn't see any detail in a few regional I
tested - didn't bother with local station.

BPA, I think I might try the 1.5.2 beta test on my Mac after all.

Can I just check a few things?

Currently I have BBC iPlayer v1.4.9, and BBC iPlayer Extras v1.9.3. In
the Additional Repositories I have
http://www.herger.net/slim-plugins/repo.xml and
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/bpaplugins/repo-short.xml

My settings for BBC iPlayer are ...

21515

Two questions. Is everything I've noted correct? How do I install the
beta test?

AFAIK The "herger.net" repository is M. Herger personal repository and
should have nothing to do with BBCiPlayer but it is not in my control. I
don't use it nor test against it.

The bpaplugins/report-short.xml is my repository for latest released
BBCiPlayer with DASH and BBCiPlayerExtra plugins.

> Is everything I've noted correct?
The whole point to 1.4.x was to use DASH. Your LIve stream setting
doesn't use DASH. If you are happy with HLS and have no rebuffering
there is no point in going to a 1.5 beta test. At this stage with 1.5.*
I want user to actually use DASH for LIve (probably because they have
rebuffering problems with any 1.4.* live streams) and reporting back
whether they still have problems. There are a few small issues with
1.5.2 and so there will be at least one more update of 1.5.x before it
is out of beta test.

Your on demand settings do not include FlashAAC which may cause some
BBCiPlayerExtra program not to play.

I suggest the following settings.
Live DASH > HLS > FlashAAC > MP3.
OnDemand DASH > HLS > FlashAAC

If you have Touch, Radio etc. with a colour display and like program
images - you could uncheck the "Always display station Icon"

> How do I install the beta test?
Replace the "repo-short.xml" repository in Plugins tab by the URL below
and click Apply
*
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/bpaplugins/betarelease-repo.xml*
LMS should then show new versions of the BBC plugins as being available
and proceed to enable.

To roll back to 1.4.X - Uncheck the BBCiPlayer plugins in Plugins tab,
click Apply and then replace the "betarelease-repo.xml" URL in Plugins
by the "repo-short.xml" URL. It is possible you may need to delete the
BBCiplayer prefs as well.

Listening to BBC Sports, Radio 4 and Radio 2 this morning the web gui
connection time has been alternating between correct reading and an
accumulating reading in the range 410963:12:45.

Alternates randomly about every 5 - 15 seconds. Haven't noticed this
behaviour before but only changed from Windows Server a couple of days
ago.

iPlayer set to default DASH>HLS>MP3>FlashAAC and playing DASH streams
without problem.

This isn't causing me a problem but I've worked out that is referencing
1st January 1970 and that this is apparently "Unix Time". It is only

The BBCiPLayer plugin does nothing with display of elapsed time of live
streams - that is all LMS. The plugin will add text after title with
"delay" and a number - is this changing ?

I've had a further think, Bpa, and for now I'll continue with iPlayer
1.4.9 and Extras 1.9.3 (despite the fact I have your "report-short"
repository in the Additional Repositories slot, Extras hasn't been
updated to 1.9.5: should it?).

I've changed the settings for Live (actually has to be this way around:
DASH > HLS > MP3 > FlashAAC) and In Demand as you instructed. I don't
think I've seen clear instructions anywhere for what these settings
should be in various circumstances, so I was never quite sure what they
ought to be.

I'll install 1.5.x when it comes out of beta.

Thanks for all your help with this, Bpa.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer V1.5.2 beta test

2016-11-22 Thread whitman

Thanks Bpa.

I've fiddled with a few settings for On demand, because there's nothing
exactly as you suggested.

This could be a coincidence, but I'm now getting "Playlist Empty" when I
try to connect to some shows On Demand. To see if it is indeed
coincidence and the Beeb are up to something, before I try other stuff,
could someone check to see if they can play Radio 2's Sounds Of The 60s
for 19th Nov? That's one I'm getting "Playlist Empty" when I try to
connect On Demand. (I'm in the UK.)

Plays fine for me using both my Windows and QNAP installations of LMS.

Probably because I showed 1.5.* - I don't have 1.4.* online.

Unlikely to be coincidence.

Please be more exact about settings and how you play programs. Give
details of problem settings and how you tried to play the program.

R2 19th Nov can be played via BBciPlayer Extra or via BBCiPlayer.
For example, If it is via VBBCiPlayerExtra then it can be access through
at least 3 menus each of which have a differernt source and so could
each have a different problem. The BBCiPlayerExtra uses unofficial
fields from BBC Browser based player which only support DASH and Flash
AAC - so if your BBCiPlayer OnDemand does not have FlashAAC or DASH -
you will get nothing. Also if you have checked the BBCiPlayerExtra box
to exclude DASH and you do not have FlashAAC - then no program will be
played.

So when you modify the settings without understanding what is implied -
it is very easy to make it impossible for BBCiPlayer to play a program.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer V1.5.2 beta test

2016-11-22 Thread whitman

Interesting. I didn't know I could get On Demand through BBCiPlayer.
I've always used Extras for that.

Anyway, I just tried BBCiPlayer as follows: BBCiPlayer>BBC Radio
2>Saturday>08:05 Sounds Of The 60s, and that does play the show. So at
least I know I can use that successfully.

I was trying (the route I've always used) BBCiPlayerExtras>Radio 2 A-Z>S
programs>Sounds Of The 60s>Sounds of the 60s 19/11/16, and that still
gives "Playlist Empty".

My current settings are:

BBCiPlayer
Live: DASH/HLS/MP3/FlashAAC
On Demand: DASH/HLS/MP3/FlashAAC

BBCiPlayer Extras
Select if you do not want DASH streams: unchecked

Last 7 days only. BBciPlayerExtra gets access to all of iPlayer
programs.

Setting look OK - must be one of the small changes I made. I'll have to
test later. Workaround - use BBCiPlayer > Radio 2 > Sounds of the 60s -
it's ok for last 7 days progs.

You are posting on the beta thread so "Man in a Van" is probably using

Apologies as I'm coming a bit late to this thread but I installed 1.5.2
a couple of days ago and it's been working a treat via squeezelite, both
on my Linux desktop and my piCorePlayer. But last night I was listening
to 4Extra live streaming on my Boom which is the first time I've used it
since going to 1.5.2 and I was getting very short drop outs in the
audio.

I've just search through this thread and I can't see anyone mentioning
the Boom, other than in the first announcement. Has anyone tried it on a
Boom and have you had any issues? Or am I investigating new ground here?
TIA

I use a Receiver and from a transcoding point of view there's no
difference between the Boom and any other squeezebox that needs
transcoding.

Are you using wifi or wired with the Boom? I used a Boom for a while a
couple of years ago and I had to use it wired, the wifi was awful.

I play R4 all the time on Boom - so there is no Boom specific issues
except perhaps the generaL wifi one - is the Boom wired ?
The should be no difference between R4Extra and any other station.

At busy time BBC/CDN can be slow to deliver packet sometimes as long as
30 secs.

Please be more descriptive on "drop out" - is it a pause where no audio
is lost but silence is inserted or is it where audio is lost and
replaced by silence ?
Did "rebuffering" appear in the display ?
Any messages in the log file corresponding to same time as drop outs ?

What are your BBCiPlayer Live preference settings ?
Are you in the UK ?
What is LMS processor and LMS version ?
What time did this happen ?
Have you changed any BBCiPlayer setting ?
Did you migrate from 1.4.* or a clean new 1.5.2 installation ?

Ok so I have only just installed this beta version after being directed
to this thread to resolve an issue I had with iplayer extra.

With the live stream delay set to 2mins this seems to have resolved the
breaks/ rebuffering issues I had with v 1.4.9. Playing through Booms I
was getting an instant start but after about 20 seconds I would have a
break of sometimes up to 60 sec before resuming ( no loss of audio).
This happened at least twice before the feed stabilised and would then
play all day...

The only slight issue that I have now is that when using iplayer extra
the program image is not displayed either against the track in Web
control or on my phone using Squeeze Ctrl. Image displays in Iplayer and
all other music - just not in extra. Not an major issue but for
completeness would be nice.

BPA - Thanks for continuing to keep both iplayer and extra working - so
that we can all still use LMS to it full - much appreciated.

For completness to understand who had rebuffering with 1.4.9 and for
whom 1.5.2 fixed - can you give details on your system (i.e. processor,
memory ) and OS.

Program image still works for Extra. Track image has never worked in
BBCiPllayer or BBCiPlayerExtra. BBC only store track images for the
last 10 tracks on a few National live streams so really it is not usable
for "Listen Again".

Just to clarify I do not get any images on Squeeze Ctrl when I use
iplayer Extra- I just get the default CD case image... If I then go and
select exactly the same program via the Iplayer plugin I get the program
image displayed. I have " Always show station icon" unchecked. I also
tried this in Squeeze Commander to ensure it was not a SqueezeCtrl issue
and it is the same.. I did used to get the images in Extra , however
with all the changes over the last year or so I am not sure when it
actually stopped as it was a minor issue. I have clean installed LMS
several times and each time I have deleted all residual files and
directories.

With the latest beta Iplayer I have noticed an issue - When I pause a
live stream and wait for 30 seconds or so and then resume, the stream
seems to jump back a random amount. Sometime it displays delayed by 1
min sometimes it displays delayed by 17 min (the highest I have had so
far) If I then use forward, then it returns to approx live. I also
notice a related issue when pausing a program in iplayerExtra and
resuming I get a display that states delayed by mins but the
program appears to carry on playing from the same place. ( last one
displayed 24667677 mins delayed)

Thanks

Apologies for the delay in replying. OK, I've just spent 20 minutes
listening to R4Extra on the Boom again (it's not a device I use much)
and I didn't have any problems at all. It is connected via WiFi so,
given various comments hereabouts, I think I'll have to try to run a

Ah, I enabled that a while ago during a phase of playing around with

it off.

Bpa, I still can't get many shows via BBCiPlayer Extras (I'm using
1.9.3). I'm using the workaround you suggested above: in other words, go
in via BBCiPlayer (I'm using 1.4.9).

But I noticed this thread ...

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?106504-Iplayer-Extra-only-working-when-Dash-is-Disabled

... which seems to highlight the same or similar problem, and arising
more or less at the same date mine did. So I tried ticking the Enable
box for "do not want DASH streams" in Extras settings, as outlined in
that thread. Now, indeed, shows play well via Extras.

Thought I'd post this as it might help draw further conclusions.

Can I use 1.9.5 with 1.4.9? I'm guessing not, as it hasn't updated

Sorry I'm not sure - the changes to 1.95 were small and I've got tied up
with other things (a small one line update that has snowballed) that I
didn't test it. I didn't want to put 1.9.5 on general release as that
would cause an automatic update and possibly trigger many postings worse
than what I'm dealing with now..

How will I know when I have the correct stream?

There are two parts to an audio stream.
1. The transport mechanism or protocols - how to endcoded audio data is
delivered from the source
2. The encoding of the audio data - the codec.

For BBC there are multiple transport protocols available - http, DASH,
HLS (for Apple), Flash (RTMP), HDS. These are not audio encoding
formats.

The BBC uses AAC encoding for all the above transports except for http
shoutcast streams which are MP3 except for the HD http stream for R3
which is AAC over http.

So AAC is what you should see when playing BBC DASH & HLS streams except
when you are playing the lesser quality shoutcast.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer V1.5.2 beta test

2016-12-07 Thread mrmichaelwright

So I've been at home a bit this week and performance has been mixed.

As i was getting repeated DNS issues I've swapped out my BT homehub for
a better router. I noticed that often when iplayer dropped out i also
lost a load of other internet services like dropbox so there was
something of a wider network problem going on.

Since changing the router I no longer get the problems with other
internet connectivity just with iplayer.

I get the following error before a dropout:

This is with a synced touch and duet playing 6 music. Sometimes it just
re-buffers for a few seconds, sometimes it just gives up altogether.

I guess this is pointing back to the problem being with windows 10
running on an older machine and causing issues

AFAICT This is not a WIndows 10 BBCiPlayer plugin issue - all the errors
show no response from BBC to request for audio but in the middle of the
iPlayer errors is the error.

This indicates it is not an BBCiPlayer issue but a general LMS issue and
more likely a system issue.

I think LMS does a backoff approach to retries with each failed attempt
it waits a bit longer. IIRC First backoff is 60 sec which means there
has been many many attempts to contact mysqueeznetwork.com and each one
has failed.

2016-12-07 Thread mrmichaelwright

Hi bpa

The loss of other services seemed to happen 2 or 3 times a day. It
doesn't occur alongside anything else obvious but I do work almost
entirely off dropbox dealing with large CAD and video files. My theory
is that the DNS demands on the homehub are too high, hence the change of
router.

A quick look at the log shows that the mysqueezebox.com error occurs
about 8-10 times a day, including at just after midnight last night when
other network traffic will have been very low.

My server is configured with a static IP.

I've upped the delay time in iplayer to 3 min and will see how that
goes. Most of the time the long chunk fetch times add up to about 1
minute in total before a re-buffer occurs, maybe this is making the
cache 'catch up' with the encoding problems that you have identified
with systems like mine.

* Fiddling around with the BBCiPlayer plugin settings will do nothing to
solve this issue. Changing the delay time only changes when in the time
stream the plugin fetches buffer it does not change how many buffers or
timeouts - in fact it could create a more intense burst of requests.
The "delay" parameterrs is to fix a problem withgin in10 dealing with
transcoding. No system details given but you may even be doing
transcoding so delay change would have no effect then.
* The 1.5.* changes meant that DASH stream only do one (1) DNS lookup as
long (multiple HTTP request are sent within a persistent TCP connection)
as there is a good connection to source.
* Since messages occur in the night when nothing is happening shows the
problem is systemic.
* the other application which do not show errors - have you enablde
logging on those applications or so they not show these errors to users
?

This is a systemic problem you need to tackle the problem - not the
symptoms. The BBCiPlayerplugin highlighted a problem which was already
there (i.e. Unable to get players from SN message) by actively logging.

You need to determine is your problem (i) local to a single PC the LMS
server or (ii) does it happen for all on your LAN ?

If it affects all devices - then work on devices closer to the ISP -
router / modem etc.
If DNS on the router is the problem. Disable the DNS server on the
router and configure using DHCP to tell device to talk to real DNS
server directly. For a small number of PC/players this may be best
since you eliminate an extra step in processing. If you are not using
DHCP configure PC locally to use DNS directly.
If your LAN is IPv4 only - make sure devices are not wasting time doing
IPV6 DNS lookups

No - perhaps a user has turned off the router while away but left all
other system on -also LMS was created in the days of slow connections
and pay per bit so developers were asked to keep overheads down and SN
connection wasn't as important as it is now with Touch devices and some
streaming servicesetc..

IIRC with email - the delivery attempt intervals can go out to months !
With SMS it can also go out to days - never wondered why an SMS message
suddenly appeared a day or two after it was sent ?

Yep - it's a minro point. If user needs to access SN it will happen

In the beginning I think Slimdevices operated their own nertwork of
servers before it was moved to AWS.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBCiPlayer V1.5.2 beta test

2016-12-21 Thread Atlantic

I installed 1.5.2 yesterday on our Linux (Debian) SBS version 7.5, from
repo
"
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/bpaplugins/betarelease-repo.xml
".

We're in the UK and use a major UK ISP. 1.5.2 isn't working for me,
tested using our SB Touch. Two symptoms are:

(i) The playing title, on both the Touch and on an open PC window using
the port 9000 'web' UI says:
"BBC Radio 4 - 23 mins delay"

(ii) There are delays in connection, and on buffering and rebuffering.
On connection, the station logo comes up quite quickly but there's a
delay of several seconds before the audio starts; meanwhile, the '23
mins delay' text gets added to the playing title. Once started, the
audio plays for only a very few seconds before the Touch indicates
'buffering' - with its counter staying at 0%. After quite a while, the
audio suddenly starts but again only lasts a very few seconds before
rebuffering which - as often as not - fails and the Touch announces a
buffering failure. Sometimes, the audio will subsequently restart.

I did make a note of the URL as reported on the left hand pane of the
Web UI:

"URL:
iplayer://live?hls=http://a.files.bbci.co.uk/media/live/manifesto/audio/simulcast/hls/uk/sbr_high/ak/bbc_radio_fourfm.m3u8&dash=http://a.files.bbci.co.uk/media/live/manifesto/audio/simulcast/dash/uk/dash_full/ak/bbc_radio_fourfm.mpd&icon=http://radio-service-information.api.bbci.co.uk/logos/bbc_radio_fourfm/600x600.png&radiovis=fm/ce1/c204/09320&onair=bbc_radio_fourfm";

The as-shipped 'Intenet Radio' system in SBS seems to work fine, picking
up Radio 4 at 128 kbps, and Radio 3 at 320 kbps. SBS, and the Touch,
each use static IPs; they have worked with earlier versions of iPlayer,
and they work fine with the music library.

I've set Iplayer 1.5.2 to use "DASH>HLS>MP3>Flash AAC" and "Use highest
bitate available DASH steam" for 'live' and 'on demand'. Seconds to
delay start live stream is set to 15, and buffer fullness threshold is
set to 255.

Since first noticing this behaviour, I wondered whether the SBS system,
or the Touch, was using an alternate (standby) uplink and DNS server,
and I've rechecked those and reset the Touch DNS resolver to use a
faster DNS service. The symptoms didn't change, though.

If anyone has any thoughts about what may be happening here, I' be
interested to see them. In the meantime, I'll continue with some more
tests.

I think LMS maybe too old as 7.5 is very very old.

Your descirption of previous use is very confusing (128kbps MP3 , R3 320
is probably AAC) but then you mention iPlayer - did you use BBCiPlayer
or not and did you have proiblemn befroe with BBCiPlayer plugin ?

Something very strange is happening with your system.
What sort of processor and memory on LSM server ?
Change delay to "no delay".

BBCPlayer 1.3.x*, which I think I had before this update?

bpa, apologies for the confusion. We have (and had) two ways of playing
BBC audio on our SBS. The 1st is the SBS as shipped by Logitech, which
comes with an Internet Radio menu with entries such as 'local', 'world',
etc. Using that, selecting 'World', then 'National', then 'BBC R4',
gives us a Radio 4 live steam at 128kbps - I didn't notice the coding.
Similarly, that system provides BBC R3 at 320 kbps, and I did notice
that was AAC. I mention this test only to show that SBS, and the Touch,
seem to be operating fine with our network LAN and with our
connectivity.

The 2nd method we used to listen to BBC was using the BBCiPlayer
plug-in, as created by Triode and with additional work-arounds and
development by yourself. Until this upgrade to 1.5.2, we used v
1.3.something - it may have been 1.3.3 but I'm not sure and it isn't
there now - but there was an asterisk by the last digit, eg 1.3.3*. I
installed it around September or October this year, I think, following
some work-around advice you kindly offered the community when the BBC
switched to HLS and DASH.

Those were the two methods I confusingly described, sorry about that.
The Logitech-supplied system works, and I think uses opml.radiotime, if
I was able to catch that correctly as it fleetingly passed the screen.
The previous BBCiPlayer plug-in version 1.3.something also worked, but
did not have the 'DASH>HLS>MP3' choices - it only had 'HLS>MP3>Flash'
(?). I had been following your recent advice to another user in the
General Discussion forum, and I had the impression that we should be
using the newer version, and we should be using DASH, so I set up the
repository and installed it. My problem is with the BBCiPlayer v 1.5.2
that I installed yesterday. after deciding to update to it.

I agree it is strange. Have you ever seen anyone else report this '23
mins delay' text added to a title?
I think the processor is Celeron something, 1GB main memory. I'd be a
bit surprised if the SBS was struggling - it isn't doing anything else.

The file format entry for AAC reads:

AAC - Native
FLAC - faad/flac
MP3 - faad/lame
PCM - faad

There is no bitrate limiting on the Touch

I'll try a test wih 'no delay' and report back.

We only have multiple uplinks. The alternate uplink is Satellite
(SATCOM bidirectional) and its network latency is appalling. On
transactions requiring multiple, sequential DNS lookups, the delays
caused by DNS alone can be a couple of seconds and we find this is
usually sufficient to knock over any real-time services. We try to make
sure that time-sensitive equipments and applications only transact over
our terrestrial uplink, including (of course) any DNS queries they make.
I checked the Touch specifically for this, this morning, and noticed
that, though its gateway setting was on the terrestrial uplink, its DNS
resolver was using the standby Satellite system. It was a configuration
entry that I made when first setting up the Touch to use a
manually-entered static IP - I entered the wrong resolver address - and
I realised I should have used our main resolver, and I've corrected it.
I haven't altered the Touch's DNS mechanism, at all; merely told it the
correct place to go to resolve domain addresses.

bpa, thank you very much for thinking about this. I think it is
strange. That you do, as well, suggests to me that perhaps there
haven't previously been any reports of this strange addition to the
playing title "23 mins delay".

I'll study the rest of the note later (I see the mention of satellite
links which is a big warning sign) but the HLS code in 1.5.* is
unchanged. To return to HLS make sure it is fiurst in the list and make
sure no DASH.

There is something very strange - the only way to get a delay of 23 min
on a live stream is to select to jump back in time. If you are doing
somehting odd like saving favorites and not playing from BBCiPlayer menu
- please say so.

Pausing a stream causes the effect you're seeing, the minutes next to

It possibly happens for other reasons, not sure.

To see a 23 min delay the user will have to had pressed paused and
waited for 23 mins - I don't think the OP has pressed pause. I think
the jump back to a time is more likely but OP has not said anything
about that so somehting very odd is going on possibly the time reference
source is being messed up by satellite link.

The following is an explanation why I think DNS should not be the main
source of your issue even with your satellite links.

First a general comment about SB player - When and SB player (e.g.
Touch) plays any stream (http/MP3, http/AAC, HLS or DASH) using a local
LMS - the DNS lookup will be done by LMS - the Touch will be told to
play a stream from a numeric IP address.

The BBCiplayer does all the data comms with BBC - the SB player willbe
told to play a stream (i.e. again a numeric IP address) and the source
will be the LMS server.

When BBCiPlayer is playing HLS streams - a DNS lookup will happen for
each 6 sec chunk. Whereas with DASH in 1.5.x using HTTP 1.2 (persistent
TCP) - only one DNS lookup should happen for each live stream. With
yoru DNS setup I would expect more problem with HLS rather than DASH in
1.5.* unless replies to DASH request tale a long time. This is why
message in log file are important.

Oh, that's useful. Thanks for explaining this. You can tell I had been
worried about that. For transport, the SATCOM link had been
out-of-circuit anyway - but the Touch's DNS resolver had been reaching a
DNS server which had resolved over the SATCOM - I've since rectified the
setting in the Touch.

Astute. Indeed, haven't used pause, nor run from favourites. But
following your post I checked the time setting on the SBS server - it's
23 or 24 minutes out.

I'm offsite tomorrow, so I won't get back to this until Friday. I'll
have to check why it's adrift. (It isn't the SATCOM; we've several
other servers and routers which receive their timing over the Satellite
link, and they're fine. I think NTP must account for all sorts of
circuit media.)

I would think this accounts for the '23 mins delay' message; after
fixing I'll see if the rebuffering also starts working. Thanks very
much for such an inspired deduction.bpa, please don't trouble any
further just now, let me fix this, and I'll also check the logs you
asked about, and post back sometime on Friday.

I would have had no idea that the time of day setting could be critical
to music streaming.

Grateful for the help, Atlantic

It's not but the way live streaming is done in DASH as implemented by
BBC - each6 sec chunk is timestamped. If a user pauses the simplest way
to guess how much delayed was to compare PC system clock time against
timestamp of the last packet played rather than poll a network
reference clock as I assumed the PC clock would be OK.

I think Touch "talks " to Squeezenetwork to get some of its
icons/graphics or perhaps cover art scaling etc and that is the use of
DNS - not playing a audio stream.

OK - having cleared away some of the distractions enable the real
problem to be identified - I'll need to think about what long latency
does to DASH.

Hi Bpa

Had a rude awakening today.

I have as an alarm BBCi Player Radio 6 Music set for 0730Hrs
I was awoken at 0730Hrs by a very loud Radio 6 Music playing (it made me
jump so much I hurt my back), I bleerily turned it down to a more
reasonable level and slowly woke up.
As I lay there I wondered why the expected program was not playing and
that there was no 730 news, I looked at the display on my Pcp 3.02 and
it said Radio 6 Music - Delayed 87 Minutes !

I am assuming for some reason that the alarm did not do its normal fade
in hence the (very) rude awakening

I stopped the playback and restarted but was still the same. I then
stopped the playback and then played a track from my server I then
restarted the R6 playback and all was fine again untill the alarm
timeout.

At around 0900 I pressed play on R6 again and the same thing happend
delayed by 47 minutes this time. I then stopped the playback and then
played a track from my server I then restarted the R6 playback and all
was fine again.

I checked the time on the server but all was fine

With Live streams each packets has an URL which contain the time of day
based on a reference time.

The estimated delay is a calculation using the time code of the packet
against the LMS sever time as supplied by the OS. This seems to say
your LMS server time setting could be wrong.

Nothing in the URL should initiate a delay.

Had you played this url within the previous 24 hours ?
If so did you delay the stream ?
Did you delay any BBCiPlayer live stream stream in the previous 24 hours
?

LMS caching in some cases has a long expiry and I'm wondering whether
somehting is being cached.

Hi Bpa,

I havent played this stream within 24 Hours (see "grepped" logs)
I have never knowingly paused a stream.

There are some (really) long "fetch times" in the log though

Status 200 means the packet was received so the bulk of the message are
receive but the dleay are long - I would expect 100-200ms. The delay is
measured by noting when packet was sent and the time was received
assiming OS clock is OK - the cause is the BBC or Akamai CDN. The long
delays come in bursts as if there is noise on the line or BBC/Akamai
servers are overloaded.

Certainly odd but thanks for reporting. I "feel" it may be something to
do with alarm which can do persistent retries to play a station - the
plugin delay in getting packets may be clashing with the alarm retry
delay.

Actually I just realised track info is available on the iplayer app
further down the page. Maybe this is the info your new latest tracks
feature uses. I 'll try it.

It looks like this feature does not show track info as scrolling text in
the same way as the on air text when the station logo is displayed but
instead as a separate menu item. The ideal situation for me would be for
the program image to be displayed but with the same on air scrolling
text shown with the station logo. I guess this is impossible.

It's mot impossible but
(i) there is no way to sync the time of the track so at night you could
be shown track info from 7pm. You can see this on BBC own Web Browser
iPlayer. It gets worse if people pause/delay the track as track info is
realtime so if you go back to start of program the track info will show
what has recently been played but what is playing could be 3 hours
earlier.
(ii) there is limited space - two lines - so if all info was put up it
would take ages to scroll around.
(iii) It's been a few months since I posted about track info and there
has been very little feedback wanting it.
(iv) BBC don't scroll do they ?

(1) Time sync would be a problem when pausing and rewinding but if track
info was only available during live playback that would be enough.
(2) Most of the time only track info needs to be shown. Program
description info could be shown during news breaks or other times when
music is not playing.
(3) I was quite happy with the on air text until I selected the program
image instead of the station logo. I would not be surprised if most
people are using the station logo.
(4) The scrolling is on the squeezebox players not the BBC app.

Program and track info come from separate feeds - there is no indication
of news breaks or other items being broadcast in the track feed so it is
either track data or program data . Also track feeds often is not
updated in late evening and night so for example in late evening you'll
get track info from earlier in the evening (unless BBC has changed
things since last I looked).

The main issue is limited display space means a choice between program
info vs track info with the caveat that track info will be wrong some of
the time and if that is the case is it worthwhile.

I have installed the recent tracks menu now and it works perfectly. If I

Start delay is really only for Windows and is only there to help the
startup of the socketwrapper transcoding chain typically on low end PC
systems. It will no really do anything on Linux except change the start
time of the stream (i.e. the timecode of

the first packet). You have a problem not getting a packet in the
middle of streaming. Network loads (e.g. morning and evening) will
increase packet response time.

This happens to me occassionally but I'm pretty sure it is due to local
WLAN (Homelink) having a bad moment.

It is possible there is a [problem with stream getting ahead of the
stream in the servers - if this is the case then it is a bug in the DASH
implementation. Again Start time won't change this behaviour.
Any messages especially 4xx (e,g. 404 not available , 403 forbidden
etc.) in the log ?

Following comments from BBC streaming engineer saying they see 404's
being sent but I cannot reproduce this issue but I have found a possible
bug.

Debugging won't help - this means no response from CDN/BBC for a request
(timeout is 30 secs). Plugin can do nothing if BBC doesn't respond
except stop and try again.

I get some of these and I have run parallel tests with Web browser
playing DASH and Plugin and both get packet delays and timeout so it is
a network/CDN/BBC issue out of plugin control.

>From different user reports, the issue seem to have a regional context.
BBC uses two CDNs - Akamai and Limelight. The "Listen Live" menu uses
Akamai, the "Listen Live - alt CDN" uses Limelight - you don't say what
menu you use. I suggest try the other menu to see if the issue is CDN
related.

I have actually tried both CDNs with similar results unfortunately. I
don't really want to revert to HLS as the skip back can be useful.

I've had similar problem with HLS - as both DASH and HLS are delivered
by the same CDNs, server and BBC sources. Theoretically 1.5.2 should be
better (lower host network & server load) as it uses HTTP 1.1 over a
persistent TCP connection (i.e TCP connection is kept open for many HTTP
Get) but there is a flaw in HTTP 1.1. spec where handling of timeouts is
not well defined. However I don't think the problem is related to HTTP
1.1 flaw..

Does the plugin "know" that playback has stopped in these circumstances?
I can restart the stream manually immediately without waiting for the
timeout. If the plugin could restart the stream automatically or the
timeout was shorter these stoppages would be less annoying.

The plugin does knows when a timeout occurs and it should just continue
after the 30 secs wait. It does not stop for me - now I understand your
persistence. Strange.
For reference what is your setup OS, LMS version, processor, player etc.

I'll try to run some test later and see if I can reproduce.

It does restart after thirty seconds I just wondered if that timeout
could be reduced. The most annoying time for the interruption is during
the morning alarm period where the radio falls back to the default alarm
sound after a time.
