You don't say what you're using for wireless. Try a wired connection first to make
sure you've got the print sharing setup correctly. Then try it wireless.

bringing a dead Wallstreet back to life

2004-05-10 Thread Tom Roth

I'm currently using a PowerBook 3400 but have the possibility of obtaining what I
think is a first generation PowerBook Wallstreet with a dead motherboard. Using just
the serial number, is there a way to find out exactly which Wallstreet this is?

I'm thinking that if I can get it for a good price and located a motherboard for it
that would be a nice step up from my PB3400. The question is, where would I obtain a
motherboard for a Wallstreet (besides eBay) and what's a good price, for a dead
Wallstreet and for a motherboard? With all of the variations of Wallstreets I would
think there would be a lot of different motherboards out there.

Anything else I should look out for? The case on this thing is pretty banged up but a
repair tech ran some tests on it and said it was the motherboard that's bad. Of
course I have no idea what the screen looks like since I've not see it running. It
does have a zip drive, CD, floppy (not that I'd ever use it) and power supply. It
also has HD and RAM but I don't know how much.

I don't think it does because if the mouse is already plugged in I can't wake up the
3400 by moving the mouse or clicking on it. I have to hit the spacebar instead. That
is if the computer is asleep and the green light blinking. If the screen just went
blank but the computer is still awake then the green light isn't on and I can just
move the mouse and the screen will pop back on. That happens really fast whereas
waking from sleep takes a bit longer and you can hear the HD spin up.

I agree with you that is good practice and I try to follow it except in the case of my
mouse and my sleeping PowerBook 3400. However, in all my years of using Macs I've
never had this happen even when forgetting to shutdown. Anyone else ever burned out
an ADB port by not shutting down prior to connecting something?

Re: Slow tracking ABD mouse on PB3400

2004-02-23 Thread Tom Roth
You probably knew this already but just in case. Are you plugging the
mouse in while the 3400 is on? If so, send the 3400 to sleep and then
plug in the mouse. Wake it back up and it will work normally. That's
why I typically do with my 3400 when I want to use the mouse.

Unsubscribe Kit

2004-02-04 Thread Tom Roth
Unsubscribe Kit

First, ask your Internet Provider to mail you an Unsubscribing Kit. Then follow these
directions. The kit will most likely be the standard no-fault type. Depending on
requirements, System A and/or System B can be used. When operating System A, depress
lever and a plastic dalkron unsubscriber will be dispensed through the slot
immediately underneath. When you have fastened the adhesive lip, attach connection
marked by the large "X" outlet hose. Twist the silver- coloured ring one inch below
the connection point until you feel it lock.

The kit is now ready for use. The Cin-Eliminator is activated by the small switch on
the lip. When securing, twist the ring back to its initial condition, so that the two
orange lines meet. Disconnect. Place the dalkron unsubscriber in the vacuum receptacle
to the rear. Activate by pressing the blue button.

The controls for System B are located on the opposite side. The red release switch
places the Cin-Eliminator into position; it can be adjusted manually up or down by
pressing the blue manual release button. The opening is self- adjusting. To secure
after use, press the green button, which simultaneously activates the evaporator and
returns the Cin-Eliminator to its storage position.

You may log off if the green exit light is on over the evaporator . If the red light
is illuminated, one of the Cin-Eliminator requirements has not been properly
implemented. Press the "List Guy" call button on the right of the evaporator . He will
secure all facilities from his control panel.

To use the Auto-Unsub, first undress and place all your clothes in the clothes rack.
Put on the velcro slippers located in the cabinet immediately below. Enter the shower,
taking the entire kit with you. On the control panel to your upper right upon entering
you will see a "Shower seal" button. Press to activate. A green light will then be
illuminated immediately below. On the intensity knob, select the desired setting. Now
depress the Auto-Unsub activation lever. Bathe normally.

The Auto-Unsub will automatically go off after three minutes unless you activate the
"Manual off" override switch by flipping it up. When you are ready to leave, press the
blue "Shower seal" release button. The door will open and you may leave. Please remove
the velcro slippers and place them in their container.

If you prefer the ultrasonic log-off mode, press the indicated blue button. When the
twin panels open, pull forward by rings A & B. The knob to the left, just below the
blue light, has three settings, low, medium or high. For normal use, the medium
setting is suggested.

After these settings have been made, you can activate the device by switching to the
"ON" position the clearly marked red switch. If during the unsubscribing operation,
you wish to change the settings, place the "manual off" override switch in the "OFF"
position. You may now make the change and repeat the cycle. When the green exit light
goes on, you may log off and have lunch. Please close the door behind you.

PCs don't have type and creator code. That's a function of the Mac's resource fork. I
like to use Creator Changer but there's a bunch of utils out there that can do the
same thing. It gives the file the correct icon and tells the Mac which program to use
to open the file.

That's because there's no resource fork. StuffIt on the Mac will still be able to
open it. Do you have a modem on that Mac? Download StuffIt Expander from Aladdin's

Re: Making a .sea file in windows

2004-01-22 Thread Tom Roth

Mr. Cranky,

I've switched files between Macs and PC many times. The last time was the easiest. I
just used a PC formatted zip disk and copied the files from the PC onto it and then
put that disk in my Mac which read it just fine. You'll have to assign the correct
type and creator code but that's no big deal. The time before I used a simple mini
hub and connect both computers up to it. Using a little FTP server program on the Mac
I was able to login to it from the PC side and FTP my files across. Just be sure to
use the right FTP mode. If you have a CD burner on the PC just make a Joliet
formatted CD and using the Macintosh Joliet extension (downloadable from somewhere on
the Internet) you can read that disk on the Mac. Don't use ISO9660 format unless all
of your PC files are 8.3 filenames. You'll still have to assign type and creator
codes as the PC doesn't have that information.

If you have an email account that includes web space you might be able to upload the
files via FTP to that space (within the limits set by your ISP) and then download them
back down from the Mac. I wouldn't recommend doing that unless you have broadband
though.

If you want to use StuffIt you should be able to make a .sit file instead of an exe
but you still have to move the file to the Mac.

Good Luck!

Fortunately the store I bought it at took it back and I later got a different 56K PC

I would not downgrade the OS just for a modem. Get a different one. You might be

Re: question re Appletalk settings

2004-01-02 Thread Tom Roth
You don't say what the problem is you're having. I have a PB3400 and I never turn off
my AppleTalk.

Do you have an AppleTalk printer? If so, AppleTalk needs to be active and the
AppleTalk Control Panel needs to point at the Modem/Printer port otherwise you won't
be able to print. If you need to access an AppleTalk network then the AppleTalk
Control Panel needs to point point at your ethernet card.

Re: Netscape Communicator 4.79 vs Communicator 4.8

2003-12-30 Thread Tom Roth

I recently switched from IE 5.1.7 to Mozilla 1.3.1 as well, running it on a PowerBook
3400 under OS 9.1. I really like it too, especially the tabbed windows. However, I
have found that entering text seems to suddenly appear in slow motion as though I'm
hitting one key, waiting about a full second and then hitting the next key. I don't
have this problem in any other program or IE. It's not just text in a text field on a
web page but even entering the URL at the top. Any ideas?

Re: Help! Cannot access webpage

2003-12-04 Thread Tom Roth

At first I thought, "Yeah, right! Probably a DNS problem or something." So I cut and
pasted the URL and tried it myself and sure enough it doesn't work in MS Explorer
5.1.7 for Mac (I'm running OS 9.2.1). I saw it was stuck loading a JavaScript so I
fired up Mozilla and it worked right away. Must be something about the JavaScript
Explorer for Mac doesn't like. I've been using Mozilla at home (on a PB3400/OS9.1)
for a few weeks now and really like it. Takes longer to startup than Explorer but
after that it's very nice. Really like the tabbed windows.

Our campus computer store used to use one called POSIM (pronounced possum) which
stands for Point of Sale-Inventory Manager. They're still using it but have switched
to the PC version. If you're interested I can try and find out who makes it.

Re: IP problem on PowerBook 3400 - static IPs

2003-11-03 Thread Tom Roth

After switching to static IP my problems went away and then I asked if it was possible
to put my router's IP address in the Name Server field of the TCP/IP control panel
figuring that the router new the real DNS as it had gotten it from the cable modem.
So, I thought I would trying thinking it would not work. I wrote down the two DNS IPs
that I had in the Name Server field (which I had gotten from my router's admin web
page) and then I replaced those two with just my router's IP. I saved the changes and
rebooted. By golly it worked and has been for a few days now. So that's two fewer IP
numbers I have to remember when configuring the IP settings since I'm no longer using
DHCP. Just thought I'd let you all know.

Tom:

I forgot, but that's exactly how I have my PB 3400 set--with the router's settings
192.x.x.x in the Gateway field for the DNS. It doesn't pass those on to the ISP. I
rememeber now reading somewhere that that would help connect.

Re: IP problem on PowerBook 3400 - static IPs

2003-10-30 Thread Tom Roth

Well I tried the static IP numbers on my PowerBook 3400 last night and it worked. I
rebooted twice and each time I was able to connect too the internet after rebooting
with no problems. I then shutdown before going to bed and booted it back up this
morning. After it finished booting I was able to connect to the internet again so it
must have been something to do with the DHCP not working on the Mac.

Before I did this I connected to my router's administration settings and reduced the
DHCP range from 2-50 to 2-10 and then set my Mac's IP at 12. I also wrote down the
DNS numbers that the router was getting from the cable modem and entered those
manually as well into the Name Server field of the TCP/IP Control Panel.

Question: If I had entered my router's IP in the Name Server field of the TCP/IP
Control Panel, would the router then pass the DNS request onto the real DNS that it
knows about? That's the nice thing about DHCP, I don't have to remember all those
numbers.

Thanks for your help!

Re: IP problem on PowerBook 3400

2003-10-28 Thread Tom Roth

Thanks for the suggestion Charles but I don't have any other computers at home. I
don't think my ISP does MAC address restriction. Besides, I can get it working if I
keep trashing TCP/IP prefs and rebooting about half a dozen times. I've had the
router since the beginning. Just today I noticed besides the TCP/IP prefs there are
also Open Transport prefs which I've not deleted or restored from backup so trashing
them will be my next step. Right now it's working so I hate to mess with it but I
know that as soon as I reboot or shutdown, there will be a problem when the computer
boots back up again.

IP problem on PowerBook 3400

2003-10-27 Thread Tom Roth

I have a PowerBook 3400 running OS 9.1 at home connected to a Netgear Wireless (or
wired) router which is in turn connected to a cable modem. Lately, if I have to
reboot or if I shutdown when it comes back up it fails to acquire a TCP/IP number even
though it's set to do so. At first I thought it was the router so I plugged in
directly to the cable modem but am still experiencing problems. The cable modem
appears to be functioning fine and when the router is connected there's activity
between the cable modem and the router, I just can't seem to get an IP assigned.

I usually have to keep trashing the TCP/IP prefs, reboot and after a several tries it
finally gets the IP. I've rebooted the cable modem too and it's lights look like it's
working fine. This weekend I booted from my external HD and did a restore from a
backup earlier in the month (before the problem began) and I restored the TCP/IP
control panel, TCP/IP prefs, all of the open transport extensions and all of the
Orinoco extensions, control panels and prefs. Keep in mind that this PowerBook has a
built in ethernet but I also have the Orinoco card for the wireless connection. But
even with the router and wireless out of the loop I still had problems.

The restore from backup of the aforementioned items did not help the situation.
Sunday afternoon I had been on the Internet and then was working in Excel when it
locked up on me forcing me to do a reboot. When it came back up no IP number was
assigned. I had to keep switching between the Orinoco and the built-in wired
ethernet, trashing the TCP/IP prefs, rebooting shuffle and finally, after about the
seventh time it worked.

Well, this is getting old. But before I do a complete reinstall of the OS, any
suggestions about what might be going on here? Since it's happening with and without
the router and with and without the Orinoco that's ruled out. When it does this even
if I manually assign an IP that the router would have assigned it still doesn't work
which is why I think it's something on the PowerBook. Since it happens with the
Orinoco and the built-in ethernet I don't' think it's hardware. That's why I was
hoping the restore from backup would help. I could restore the whole system folder
but not sure if that would help or not but it would be faster than reinstalling the
whole OS which I'm really hoping to avoid. Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Popup blockers for Mac OS 9

2003-10-14 Thread Tom Roth
I'm using MSIE 5.1.6 under OS 9.2.1 and I'm not getting any error dialog boxes. I
just checked about four sites that I used to get a lot of pop-ups and banner ads and
they're all gone! I'm going to do this on my PowerBook 3400 at home tonight.

Does anyone know the URL of a really bad pop-up site? I recall coming across one last
month due to a typo that I must have had four pop-ups come up at once and then as you
would close one another would pop-up. I don't remember what the URL was though.

Re: Popup blockers for Mac OS 9

2003-10-14 Thread Tom Roth

Actually I didn't get any of those errors. Just blank spots where ads used to be and
hardly any pop-ups.

There are some typos in that list the Luca provided the URL for and many duplicates
<http://www.mikey-san.net/blacklist.txt>. I've gone though the list and added some of
my own that I was getting. If anyone would like the final version I'd be happy to
email it to you or if the moderators don't mind I could post it to the PowerBooks
list. Moderators?

In OS 9 the hosts file is just a simple text file that I had living in my System
Folder/Preferences folder. You may find it loose in your System Folder. If you don't
have one at all put it in one of those two places. For those of you who don't know,
the host files allows you to resolve a domain name to an IP number without the use of
a domain name server because you've already listed the domain name's IP number. It
essentially says I've already got the IP number for that domain and therefore it
doesn't consult a DNS. The added trick here is that we've zeroed out these domains by
saying the IP number is 0.0.0.0 instead of what they really are.

In OS 9 once you edit the hosts file you need to go to the TCP/IP Control Panel and
click on the button labeled "Select Hosts File.." and then point to it. You may have
to repoint the TCP/IP Control Panel to the hosts file each time you make changes.
I've not taken time to verify if that is true or not. If you don't see the "Select
Hosts File.." button in your TCP/IP then you need to switch the TCP/IP Control Panle
User Mode to Advanced.

If you still get some annoying ads or pop-ups just check the source for the web page
and once you've found the domain just copy it from there and paste it into your hosts
files. Sometimes you can just click and hold on the banner ad and select "copy link
to clipboard". Other times you actually need to view the HTML source.

PS: You can use this to block "adult" sites and other unwanted sites as well.

You know, I kind of like this idea of blocking the pop ups by listing them in the
hosts file. While Web Washer works it's slow because it's creating a proxy server.
This hosts blocking method doesn't slow anything down. Might not catch everything but
I can live with that.

Thanks Luca!

Eric,

This seems to work pretty good and the price is right though it does slow down the
loading of pages. I guess that's the trade off. I may try Mozilla too.

Popup blockers for Mac OS 9

2003-10-09 Thread Tom Roth
This is Slightly Off Topic but since I will be using this on my PowerBook 3400 I guess
that makes it on topic.

I'm looking for a popup blocker that will work with under Mac OS 9. I've seen plenty
for Windows that block pop-ups, pop-unders, ads, banners, and spyware. I've seen a
few blockers for Mac OS X but have struck out finding anything for OS 9. I usually
use MSIE v5 on my Mac.

PowerBook 3400 won't auto-sleep

2003-10-09 Thread Tom Roth

I have my PowerBook 3400 (OS 9.1) set to automatically sleep within 5 minutes if there
is no activity and it's done that just fine for over a year and a half. About 2
months ago, it quit going to sleep after 5 minutes. No blinking green light at the
top. Instead of sleeping, now it will just dim the display. It will sleep if I close
the lid or select Sleep from the Finder's Special menu.

Yesterday I booted it from an external hard drive and then deleted the Energy Saver
Prefs file from the internal drive's System Folder, I deleted the desktop DB file
using TechTools and then it of course rebooted, still to the external drive. I then
set the startup drive back to the internal, shutdown, disconnected the external and
booted up normally to the internal drive. When I went to the Energy Saver Control
Panel I could see that the settings were different. I reset them to 5 minutes but
it's still not automatically going to sleep. What am I missing here? Is there
another prefs file I should delete? Is there something else that might be causing
this? I've not installed anything new, nor is there any program running that's
keeping the PowerBook active.

Any ideas?
TIA,
-tom

I tried a GV pcmcia modem soon after I got my 3400 and the last version of their

Re: PB 3400 OS

2003-09-03 Thread Tom Roth

Jim,

9.1 is as far as you can go on a 3400, normally. That's where mine is but I have the
full 144MB of RAM and I'd highly suggest you get more for it. 9.1 has been very
stable and responsive but I did disable extensions I don't need. There is an
extension of some sort available on the OS9 Forever website
that is suppose to allow you to upgrade the
3400 all the way to 9.2.2. I've not tried it though. Upgrades should be downloadable
from Apple but you'll probably have to do 9.2.1 and then 9.2.2.

Thanks for the URL Andrew. I couldn't find it on my Mac here at work. Might have had
it on my PB at home. The power adapter recalled is the same model if you have a 3400
as that's what became the first G3 PowerBook. I entered my 3400's serial number and
the number off of the brick adapter and it qualified so they sent me a new yo-yo

Re: slow booting kanga

2003-08-15 Thread Tom Roth

I don't know where the Adaptec UDF Volume Access came from but I don't think you need
it. I believe the Mac OS supports UDF without the need of 3rd party extensions. Try
yanking it out and see what happens. Also check to see what the next extension is to
load as that may be causing problems trying to load. I've always thought that the
extension shows up after it loads so it might be the next one causing problems. Use
Extensions Manager to see the list as not all extensions show up on the desktop when
booting. Using Extensions Manager you can very easily turn off a whole bunch of
things and then gradually turn one extension at a time one (rebooting after each
change you make of course) until you find the problem one.

Let's face it, the problem of spam is only getting worse. Many places of business now
employ some form of spam filtering but some still gets through and what about the real
email that gets blocked by mistake? I say do anything you can to stop spammers.

Re: PowerBooks lists a gateway to spam?

2003-07-23 Thread Tom Roth

I switched ISPs back in March and my wife used the same user ID she had before but now
with a very common ISP after the @ symbol. The one that starts with an "E". Even
though it was a "new" account she immediately had lots of spam. A quick Google search
revealed that someone else had used that address previously and thus it must have been
on every spamming list possible. She change the user ID portion of her email address
to something less common and has not had any spam since. Any email list can be used a
source of harvesting for spammers.

There is no good way to regulate spam or enforce anti-spam laws. I'm sure most all of
us know that you never, NEVER buy anything from a spammer! Why would you trust
someone who sends you junk email but hides their own email address? If they were a
legitimate business they wouldn't have anything to hide. But the painful truth is
that some people send them money and since the spammer's operating costs are so low to
send out millions of emails, even if they get just one in ten million, they've made a
profit. So the obvious solution is to start a campaign to educate the public to NEVER
BUY FROM A SPAMMER! If no one, I mean no one at all ever bought anything from a
spammer, not even a 39 cents toothbrush, then they would be out of business and that
would be the end of spam. Wouldn't that be nice? Help put an end to spam. Get the
word out. Cut and paste this paragraph into a new email and send it to everyone on
your mailing list and any email groups you belong too. If we can get 100% cooperation
then we will have 0% spam!

WaveLAN driver URL

2003-06-13 Thread Tom Roth

Thanks to Bill Cornett's suggestion of doing a Get Info on the downloaded WaveLAN
driver file it showed the URL that I had downloaded it from. I had forgotten that
information gets put there.

http://workingwireless.net/wireless/Installers/WaveLAN%c2%ae%20Install%20Disk.sit

There are a number of other drivers available here too. Just use:

http://workingwireless.net/wireless/Installers/

Nothing newer than May of 2002.

WaveLAN v 6.0 driver

2003-06-12 Thread Tom Roth
We were discussing last week different drivers to use and someone was needing drivers
for older Macs. I had mentioned that somewhere on the Internet I had seen the WaveLAN
drivers but didn't have the URL. I just found that I did have the drivers on a zip
disk. This is version 6.0 from March of 2000.

>From the readme file:

2. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
2.1 Hardware
The WaveLAN driver for Apple PowerBooks provided on the
WaveLAN Software CD-ROM and/or website can be installed
on the following Apple PowerBooks:
* G3 PowerBook Series
* 3400, 2400 and 1400 PowerBook Series
* 5300 and 190 PowerBook Series
2.2 Operating System
The software is designed to work on the PowerBooks
listed above in combination with the following
Mac OS operating systems:
7.5.2, 7.5.3, 7.5.5, 7.6, and 7.6.1
8.0, 8.1, 8.5, 8.5.1 and 8.6
9.0
If anyone needs this driver just email me directly. The file is less than 1MB.

Re: Orinoco Antenna?

2003-06-12 Thread Tom Roth

I believe they were one of the companies I called them before I bought my Netgear and
they said their units do not support AppleTalk protocol but then very few wireless
routers do and that may not be a problem for you anyway. If you're just needing
TCP/IP then you're fine with any wireless router that supports the 802.11b. Now for
the PC Card to go into your PB you'll need to make sure there are Mac drivers
available which is why I went with the Orinoco card but there are others. Just make
sure the card you buy (besides having Mac drives) is 802.11b just like the router.
Or, if you want to use the newer 802.11g standard then make sure that both the
wireless router and card are that same standard.

Re: Orinoco Antenna?

2003-06-11 Thread Tom Roth

I've got an Orinoco card and am using it with a Netgear wireless router and have been
out in my back yard with it at the signal strength was fine. That was probably about
a distance of 50-60 feet. I've not tried going farther but I probably could have.

I'd suggest looking at relocating your SMC to another location. Perhaps something is
causing problems nearby? Get it higher, move it away from any other electronics,
large metal objects, etc. See what the signal strength is when you're just a few feet
from the SMC. Maybe it's not transmitting well. You might also be getting
interference from a neighbor's wireless unit. Try a different channel.

Aren't there some older still drivers under the WaveLan name? They might work better

What kind of benefits/advantages are there using the Airport Software over the

I've heard you can do that but which version of the Airport Software did you use?
I've downloaded 2.0.2 and 2.0.4 and TomeViewer but hadn't tried it yet. I think the

Re: Wireless card in 3400c?

2003-06-03 Thread Tom Roth
Sorry, I didn't have it anymore as that was many months ago but after trying on their
website again and striking out I tried FTP instead and found the driver version 7.2
that I'm using.

Hope that helps!

On the website I saw firmware updates but I think you have to have a PC to use them
(which I do at work) but I'd be afraid that might make the 7.2 driver not work.

Re: Wireless card in 3400c?

2003-06-03 Thread Tom Roth

I'm using the Orinoco Gold with no problems and no changes to the PowerBook 3400. The
card doesn't ship with any Macintosh drivers and they were next to impossible to
locate on their website but other than that I'm very happy with it! Someone with
their tech support finally sent me the URL and Bruce Johnson also had the drivers.
I'm running it under OS 9.1.

Re: Rebuild 3400c - 8.6 or 9?

I have OS 9.1 on my 3400 and it's fine. It's been very stable. Check
your apps and make sure you're not going to break anything going to OS 9
but otherwise you might as well.

I would reformat using Extended since you're right there anyway.

Friends -

Have a 3400c which has provided years of good service.
Figure I'll wipe the disk and reinstall the OS and
get a fresh start.

OS 8.6 was very stable but I thought I'd ask if the
jump to OS 9 was worth the trouble. I've lurked on
this list and I know that some people think it's
much slower than OS 8.6

If I do decide to initialize and go to 9, should
I reformat as standard Apple partition or go to
the extended format?

Suggestions and experiences welcome!

Re: wireless router recommendations

2003-02-26 Thread Tom Roth

Yup, that was long but very helpful. Thank you very much!! It sounds like much of
the equipment is interchangeable, it's just a matter of price vs. features.

Regarding security, is it a matter of preventing access to the computer that the
wireless card is installed on or just access to the bandwidth? Or, is it only the
data being transmitted between the base station and the wireless card? Which could be
very sensitive if you're doing on-line banking for example. On the other hand, if
you're just downloading and reading the PowerBooks list mail and visiting say CNN's
website then what's the worry?

I can see where it would be good if the router had a standard plug-in port besides the
wireless in case you wanted to hook up another computer or forego wireless in
instances where security mattered.

wireless router recommendations

2003-02-26 Thread Tom Roth

I know we've talked quite a lot on this list about various wireless cards but not as
much about the wireless routers. Obviously Apple's Airport is one solution but with
the proliferation of wireless we're seeing many such routers out there. Every Sunday
you can look in the ads and see a LinkSys or something. Which of these are good
choices for us Mac users?

I've got a PowerBook 3400 that I want to go wireless with in the near future. Should
I buy a card now and a router later or do I need to make sure the two are compatible?

Re: ethernet

2003-02-19 Thread Tom Roth
The plug in the back is a dual plug for modem or ethernet. If you got all the pieces
with the 3400 you would also get a splitter plug that allows you to use both modem and
ethernet at once. When I take my 3400 to work with me I use the ethernet to connect
it to the network. When at home I use the modem plug. I'm going to get cable or DSL
at home soon though so the modem will not be used after that.

Yes, you could get a PCMCIA ethernet card and if you wanted to do 100mbps you would
have to but otherwise you might as well use the built in ethernet.

Re: OS question

2003-01-27 Thread Tom Roth
There's no free downloads to upgrade that much. You'll need to buy an OS 9 CD and
then you could download a free upgrade to 9.1 which is as far as a 3400 can go. Some
here prefer 8.6 on a 3400. I've got 9.1 on mine and it's very stable and responsive.
Just have to weed out the garbage in the Extensions folder, same with 8.6.

The DNS will be an IP address but when you dial-up, your Mac is also assigned an IP
address too. And you may have listed a gateway or router IP address. So, a DNS is a
"domain name server" and it will have it's own IP address. The web site you visit
"www.apple.com" also have their own IP address which are discovered (resolved) by the
domain name system. You say go to "www.apple.com" and the DNS resolves it's IP and
then you start to load the web page. All this happens quickly, behind the scenes
without you seeing it. When you get on your problem Mac again try MacPing as I
described in my earlier message and you may even try going to apple's website via the
IP number instead of name.

Instead of:

http://www.apple.com/

Try:

http://17.112.152.32/

If using the name doesn't work but using the IP address does, then it's a DNS problem.
If neither works then you have other problems.

Those numbers may not necessarily be operating DNS. Usually an ISP would have two DNS
servers and then a third one listed outside of their network.

Here's an IP address of a DNS server somewhere in North Carolina. It's the one they
have configured here as the external DNS.

128.109.193.1 You usually want a DNS that is closer to you but in a pinch this might
do.

Re: PBook Ghost Connections

2003-01-17 Thread Tom Roth
DNS IP numbers should be in the TCP/IP control panel. Typically they are
automatically assigned along with your IP number when your dial in. Since you're
running an older OS I'm not sure exactly what it looks like. It's been a few years
since I was using that old of an OS with dial-up. In the newer OSs you can manually
enter the DNS IP numbers even if your own IP number is being automatically assigned by
the PPP dial-up server.

As far as pinging goes, look for a program called MacPing or WhatRoute. If you can
ping the IP number but not the name then it's a DNS problem. For example, here I've
fired up MacPing and entered www.apple.com. It resolved to IP number 17.112.152.32.
That's what the DNS does. It converted the name to the IP number. BTW, the
152.11.243.108 is my Mac's IP number but don't try pining that as I'm behind a
firewall and it won't get through.

Source: [152.11.243.108] --> Destination: www.apple.com [17.112.152.32]
RESULT
PKT# TIME LENGTH
success 15 56
success 25
 56
success 35 56
success 45 56
success
55 56
Packets out/in/bad/%loss = 5/5/0/0
Round Trip Time (Ticks)
min/avg/max = 5/5/5

Now I ping the IP number of www.apple.com.

Source: [152.11.243.108] --> Destination: [17.112.152.32]
RESULT PKT# TIME
 LENGTH
success 16 56
success 25 56
success
35 56
success 45 56
success 55
  56
Packets out/in/bad/%loss = 5/5/0/0
Round Trip Time (Ticks) min/avg/max =
5/5/6

That too works. I'm guessing that in your case when you ping apple's IP number it
will work but when you ping www.apple.com it won't because your DNS is not working.
It's not able to resolve what www.apple.com is. If you use WhatRoute you'll have even
more options to play with including a trace route, query, and whois functions. But
MacPing is simple and quick. I can email it to you if you don't already have it or
can't locate it. It's a very small program.

See if you can manually enter the DNS numbers. Dial-up usually automatically assigns
them and your older OS may not be compatible. Perhaps your ISP recently upgraded
something on his end to cause this to happen.

Re: more wireless Q's

2003-01-15 Thread Tom Roth

After reading all these emails about wireless network cards I'm beginning to feel left
out with my hard wired Mac.

If I were to get a Orinoco WaveLAN Silver Lucent card, can you use the Apple Airport
drivers with it or do they only work with the Airport cards? Someone was saying
earlier that they thought the interface and setup was a lot better with the Airport
drivers.

Re: OT - OS 9.x file size question...

2003-01-08 Thread Tom Roth
I've just been looking into this in regards to moving a file 2GB or greater to a
server and the problem appears to be AFP in that case. However, on the hard drive if
the drive is formatted HFS+ (Mac Extended) then you can have a file that larger or
larger without a problem. You just might not be able to move it anywhere else.

Re: 3400, or all powerbooks, was: 5300 battery

2003-01-06 Thread Tom Roth

There's been a lot about batteries on this list so if you can access the archives
you'll find a wealth of information. But to summarize it, at least once a week (once
a month at the very least) unplug the AC and use the battery until you get the warning
message that the computer is about to go into a forced sleep mode unless you plug it
in. Then let the battery fully charge. Also see Sionnach's recommendation about
topping it off once it's fully charged.

Re: RAM problem

2003-01-03 Thread Tom Roth
If possible, set the ram usage on the programs that must be running at the same time
to less than what they are using now. I wouldn't recommend going less than the
suggested size however and be sure to leave some ram available for the OS. You never
want to use up every bit of ram. That will may your system unstable and sluggish.

Some might also suggest upping the virtual memory, RAM doubler.

I know there are many favorite PowerBooks on this list but one of the more affordable
models used is a 3400. You might be able to come across a low end G3 for $500 but
make sure you've got enough RAM. I see you're in Toronto so I'm not sure if your

Firewall needed with DSL or Cable Modem?

2002-12-09 Thread Tom Roth
I'm thinking about getting a DSL or Cable modem for home Internet access and I'm
wondering if I should get some kind of firewall software for protection. I've only
got the one PB3400 so I won't have File Sharing turned on but I am concerned about the
always on network connection making my computer at risk.

Find out the IP number assigned to the 3400 by your DHCP router and then try and ping

They see each other but probably via AppleTalk, not TCP/IP. This is an IP problem.

How do you admin the router? What if you shut everything down, brought up the router
and then after a few minutes, just the 3400? Will it work then? If not, boot up one
of the other Macs and see if they'll work. If so, maybe reinstall the networking
software (or the whole OS) on the 3400.

There's some internal IP number you can use to do that but I don't remember what it
is. Maybe someone else on the list does. Or you might find it in your router's
manual.

What do you mean by parallel cycling? Isn't that when to bicyclists are riding down

that I have two Li-ion batteries and one seems to last longer than the other.

I could see that if the PB3400 were close to the TV and the TV was using an antenna
that might cause interference but I wouldn't expect the PB3400 to interfere with the
TV no matter where in the house the PB3400 is located. I've got a PB3400 and it's
usually sitting about five feet from my TV and I've never experienced any problems
from it. The TV is on an antenna but it's not the rabbit ears antenna but an attic
antenna.

2002-10-02 Thread Tom Roth

Sounds like it might be electrical interference if it's happening throughout the
house. Is the PB3400 being run on the AC adapter? If so, the AC adapter is probably
the culprit.

Re: external SCSI hard drive not working on a PB 520

2002-10-01 Thread Tom Roth

What is the SCSI id set to on the Micropolis? If I recall correctly, the 520's HD is
SCSI so the external SCSI drive needs to be set between #1-#6, avoiding any other SCSI
device. You might not have had a SCSI id conflict on the PC if it had an IDE drive.

Re: PB3400 Ethernet/Modem pinouts?

I've always wondered just how often one would need this thing. Isn't it just so you
can have your modem and ethernet connected at the same time? I would think if you had
the ethernet connected, you probably wouldn't need the modem and viceversa.

Re: 3400 Start-up Problems

2002-09-20 Thread Tom Roth

It could be a potential HD problem. However, I'm wondering if the PRAM battery being
dead could cause this. Is the unit plugged in the whole time? Is the charger working?

It's fairly easy to put a new HD into but you will need the Torx screw driver to get
into it. There used to be a web page that had step by step instructions and some
photos but I can't find it now. You take out the three screws from the bottom, lift
out the keyboard, remove the palm rest and there's the HD under the left side of the
palm rest.

Once the new drive is installed then boot off a Mac OS CD and reformat the drive and
install the OS.

some will say 8.6, others 9.1. I'm running 9.1 on mine and it's been very stable and

Get at least one working battery. If you do a lot of work using batteries, get two or
three and an external charger. Also, the zip drives that fit into the expansion bay
are very nice if you need to move large files off and on.

If there are too many phones connected to the same line that can cause problems.
Count all the phones devices (including answering machines, cordless phones, caller ID
devices, fax machines, other modems, etc) that are all connected to that same phone
line. I've been told you should not have more than four devices on one line and
that's counting your computer's modem.

Re: 3400c miscellany

2002-08-12 Thread Tom Roth

I've got two Li-Ions batteries and one will give me about almost two hours and the
other only about an hour to hour 15 minutes. At least once a month I try to
completely discharge them all the way using them instead of the AC adapter and then
let them charge back up. I got the PB3400 and the batteries used so I don't know how
they were treated previously. The Li-Ion batteries are pricey new and I don't know if
they really give any better performance than a standard NiCad. Can anyone comment on
the differences?

Your PB might still have an internal modem but it won't be any faster than 33.6 and
frequently they won't connect any better than 28.8 which might explain the PCMCIA
modem, especially if it's a 56K.

I'm curious as to what kind of connection speeds you got. My knew Kyocera phone can be
used that way too but I wasn't sure if it would be worth purchasing the serial cable.

Re: Mac printing... slightly off topic.

2002-07-18 Thread Tom Roth

Forgive me for asking but I usually think in terms of retiring the oldest, slowest
machine and then doing a trickle down putting a new, faster machine in where it's
needed the most. My guess is that your HP will work with an iMac but check HP's
website for drivers first.

Re: How to open .sit files?

2002-07-18 Thread Tom Roth

If you have Expander and it's still not working it might be one of two things. Maybe
three. Is the icon of the StuffIt file generic? If so, apply the type and creator
code from another StuffIt file. Another possibility is that you have an older version
of Expander and this might be a newer StuffIt file. If so, just download the newest
version of Expander and it should work. Of course the file could just be corrupted.
OK, it's not corrupt as I just downloaded it and it worked fine under StuffIt 6. I
suppose it could have been corrupted on your download only in which just redownload it
but try the first two options before that.
