One of the half-dozen or so 1400 sites I had checked out suggested a PRAM zap
was a last resort.

That's correct. All sorts of nasty message windows pop up threatening the
offender with doom and gloom. I tried it anyway with no success.

Yes, it was one of the first fixes I tried, but it wouldn't copy to its own
desktop unless I were to unlock the floppy which I was unwilling to do since it
was the only means I had at the time to actually boot up the computer.

I may still buy an ethernet card for the PB 1400cs. It's a solid machine, has a
good reputation on various sites including Low End Mac, and is upgradeable.
After I've got the bugs worked out, I'll decide how I'm gonna use it. And it's
a lot easier to network two Macs rather than burn a CD on one to read on the
other.

>
>Finally, as a last resort, you could see if anyone locally could assist you.

I'm so far out in the boonies of Arizona that the nearest other computer of any
kind is probably 25 miles away. I'm a fulltime RVer at a tiny RV boondocking
park in the middle of the desert using a portable tripod-mounted Direcway
satellite internet system.

I want to thank everyone for ideas and suggestions. After I posted my message,
I played around with the PowerBook some more. As a ham radio operator of many
years, it occurred to me that maybe I just had a bad connection at the back of
the CD-ROM module; I seemed to have been getting intermittent connection. So, I
slid the module in and out a few times (it uses a different connector in its
rear than does the floppy module) to polish up the contacts. I suddenly had a
solid electrical contact, the PB recognized the CD-ROM drive, opened the CD,
but quit after a few minutes. A little more sliding in and out and I had a
solid connection and was able to install OS 7.5.3 (not enough RAM for 8.6 or
other 8.x or 9.x). I now have an operational PB 1400cs. I even installed
ClarisWorks 4 (ho boy, I have worked with CL in years!).

BTW, I now have a fairly complete library of PB 1400 websites.

Thanks all!

Fred

Correct. Hot-swapping on the 1400 == bad. Sleep it first.

One thing I try in these situations is the tried & true PRAM zap; sometimes
it makes an unbootable cd-rom boot, for me at least.

Okay, correct me if I am wrong listers, but you cannot swap any devices on
the powerbook 1400 while it is on, can you? You have to swap the cd-rom/floppy
modules while the laptop is sleep or off.

Yes, you would have to either find a ethernet pc card or something, but
nothing can be done until you get your 1400 up and running an OS.

>Any suggestions or workarounds to either get the CD-ROM module to

First, I would try starting up the 1400 with the cd-rom installed, and zap
the PRAM. Then, see if it sees the cd-rom (assuming the cd-rom has an OS on it,
as discussed previously.

Failing that, you could put a copy of the boot floppy's system folder on the
HD of the 1400, but I am doubtful it would see the cd-rom.

Finally, as a last resort, you could see if anyone locally could assist you.

Good luck,

Ivy F.

Apple has OS 7.5.3 Posted on its site in floppy image format. If you can find
someone close that can access the apple site you can download the 17 floppy
set. I have it but don't remember exactually where you go on their site to find
it but I'm sure someone on the list can tell you...

Re: PB 1400cs CD-ROM Module Not Working?

2005-10-27 Thread Tom and Lisa P
I just purchased off eBay a PowerBook 1400cs with a floppy drive
module; I have some old financial records on floppies and I need to
access them, but my iBook 900 won't do it and can't be easily made
to do it. My problem started when the PB arrived and I found the
previous owner had initialized the hard drive, so no operating
system. He had included a 7.5.3 system CD, but there was no CD-ROM
module. So, I bought a 1400 6X CD-ROM off eBay so I could install an
OS. Removal of the floppy and insertion of the CD-ROM drive was
simple, but when I boot up the PB using cmd-opt-shift-del for the
CD-ROM (the 1400 doesn't use the standard Mac "C" key command
although I tried this also) while turning the PB on doesn't work:
the drive's amber light blinks, I can hear the CD spool up, but the
screen shows only a floppy icon with a "?" in it. It does this for
about three minutes, then turns itself off. The machine included a
boot disk with 7.5.3 which works fine, but that's as far as I can
get. I've tried removing the floppy drive after the PB is powered up
and replacing it with the CD-ROM drive, but all I get is nasty
windows stating I better replace the floppy drive or else. I am
assured by the seller of the CD-ROM module that it works.

I tried copying the disk tools floppy to the desktop, but this
didn't work. In fact, I went into the disk tools floppy looking for
something (control panels, preferences, start up) which would do
anything. I ran Disk First Aid and it came up OK for the untitled
hard drive.

Networking with my iBook would be nice, but there isn't a single
port in common with the two machines; I do not like the idea of
buying yet more adaptors, cables (the PB came with various serial
and SCSI cables and adaptors), nor PC cards when I am not at all
certain they will work any better than the CD-ROM. I checked eBay
and there are NO operating system installations for 7.x nor 8.x on
floppies (plenty on CDs).

Any suggestions or workarounds to either get the CD-ROM module to
work or to get an operating system onto this PowerBook or for
troubleshooting? I've researched the LEM site and didn't find any
hints.

Someone with more knowledge may have a better answer, but I think you
can boot from the floppy then make a ram disk, copy over the system
from the floppy and boot from the ram disk and then maybe install the
cd operating system. YMMV, and good luck.

First off use the SCSI connection to re-format the PB Hard Drive and
then re-install 9.1 Because 9.1 is such a new system, it should get
some good money on the net. Look around for a Pawnshop in your area
if you don't want eBay, but eBay is a great way to get some good
money, if you haven't used eBay before, the buyer pays shipping.

how to prep 1400cs for sale

2005-09-24 Thread Christie
I am ready to sell my PB1400cs, am a computer user but
not a techie, and need to know what's the best
practice for a few things:

- What is the best way to clean off personal files,
preferences, etc.? It works fine as it is and I'd like
to change the absolute minimum.

Currently running 9.0 - have the CD (it doesn't have a
CD drive - I use a SCSI connection to my PowerMac.) I
also have the original disks shipped with the PB. I
believe there are even a few folders on the HD holding
the intermediary OS files, that say things like "OS8
System Folder". Is there a utility already available
which can clean this up? FYI I don't have a connection
from the macs to the internet.

- I will post this for sale (and other items) on the
LEM-swap list; can anyone suggest other likely places
I could post, especially that might include the
Boston, MA, area? I would prefer to sell to someone
local (New England) and not to get onto ebay, but
please let me know if ebay really is a good idea
anyway.

FYI I'm posting a similar request on the PCI PowerMacs
list.

Thanks.

Depending on which EtherMac Card you have, Blue Arrow or Red Arrow on

these links should help. I use one in my PB1400 and its is great.

For version 595a EtherMac Card, Red Arrow on front:

For version 595 & 895 EtherMac Card, Blue Arrow on front:

For all Farallon Ethernet Software:

Thanks for the URLs! I found a driver for the card, although I am not
sure if it is the one I need, I will test it out, and if it does not
work, I will try those URLs. I will also be sure not to swap the CD and
floppy without sleeping first. Thanks.

(Snip)

The Expansion Bay Modules for the PowerBook 1400 Cannot Be Hot Swapped.
This can cause serious damage to the Module or logic board.
Always sleep or turn off the computer to swap modules.

Depending on which EtherMac Card you have, Blue Arrow or Red Arrow on top,

For all Farallon Ethernet Software:
http://www.proxim.com/support/all/maccard/software/index.html

Windows drivers are available for the 595a card, if you need to share.

There may be other resources for Farallon Software, but finding them is
hard to do. Proxim purchased the Farallon products while they were in
Bankruptcy. So far only a small amount of the Farallon Software has ever
been posted.

Farallon Software for the Skyline series of wireless cards and adaptors can
be found by following the links on my wireless FAQ page.

After Proxim dropped production and sale of the Skyline cards, they were
taken over by a group of former Farallon engineers, and they formed
MacWireless.com.

Also, if you are thinking about adding Wireless to your PowerBook 1400,
read the trouble shooting questions on my FAQ before you install the
EtherMac Software. Software for Wired and Wireless Ethernet will not
coexist peacefully on a PowerBook 1400.

I did not get a chance to reply earlier, but I zapped my PRAM and then
it seemed to work. It could have been that I was swapping them out
without sleeping or shutting down, but even when I restarted it did not
seem to work. Once I zapped my PRAM and restarted with the floppy it
worked, and I could swap them without sleeping, but if I used the CD
and then restarted, I would get the same problem. Weird? Anyways, at
least it works. I am also wondering where I can get drivers for a
Farallon EtherMac card? I currently have access to one and I am
considering purchasing one. I may install an active matrix screen off
of a broken 1400c if I can find one in a local trash bin, should this
pose any problems? Also, I had a 16MB memory chip with another
available slot on the top, and I found a 32MB chip off of another
broken 1400cs. When I tried putting them together, I should have gotten
64MB of RAM, with the built-in 16MB and the 16MB+32MB chips, but when I
tried this setup, I encountered a sad mac. When I try the 16MB alone,
or the 32MB alone, they both work. So, for now I am using just the 32MB
chip, giving my 48MB of RAM. Anyone know how I can get both of these to
work. Anyways, thanks very much for your responses.

The error message you have is usually when the software for a PCMCIA PC
Card is not installed or damaged. I have never seen it occur with a floppy
disk, but I have the following suggestions.

Your PowerBook must be in Sleep Mode, or OFF, to change the Floppy
Expansion Bay Module. If you are getting this error message when inserting
a floppy disk into the floppy drive, then either the floppy disk is bad, or
your install of the OS is bad.

Switching between Floppy and CD-ROM Expansion Bays can sometimes be
troublesome if you have Energy Savings set to low.

Use you Apple System Profiler to see if it sees the floppy drive.

If not then check the contact on the rear of the Expansion Bay Module and
see if any are damaged or missing. Also check the contacts in the PowerBook
and see if there is any damage.

Last but not least. The PowerBook 1400 only accepts Expansion Bay Modules
in the Right Hand Bay. A extra battery may be installed in the right hand
bay for storage, but it does not charge in that bay.

If it is the floppy disk, e-mail me off list, as I have a extra good
working Floppy Expansion Bay Module.

Sleep swappable on a 1400.

I have seen this problem before, but can't remember the solution, I suspect
it is either a bad module or a bad connector on the 1400 logic board - the
floppy and CD connectors are different.

Can you borrow a known good floppy and try it out ?

Hazarding a guess here but I'd try two things. One would be to check if the
floppy/Cd are hot swappable. They are on my 3400C but don't know about the
1400. If they aren't, then boot with the floppy in. Or try resetting the
pram. Don't know the key strokes for that but they're easy to find. The
computer may have had a PC card adapter at one time and things could be set
for it. Just a guess.

New PowerBook 1400cs/133 with floppy problems

2004-12-07 Thread Kirk Zathey
Hello,
I recently obtained a great condition PowerBook 1400cs/133 from a
local trash bin. I have both a CD-ROM and a floppy. I think the floppy
may have been working before although I cannot remember. I used the
CD-ROM to install Mac OS 9.1 as my copy of 8.5 had problems (download
copy). Everything works great except when I insert the floppy I get an
error saying, "The correct software you need to use the PC Card in the
"Expansion Bay" is not installed. Do you want to eject the card now?"
Does anyone have any ideas on how I could get this to work? Thanks.

Re: Problems with 1400CS CD-ROM drive

2004-11-03 Thread Cekepler
I had a similar situation a few months ago and eventually found out that one of the
connector pins at the back of the unit was bent down, which interfered with the
ability of the drive to function properly. The other connectors were in place, so the
unit "seemed" to be connected properly but couldn't "read" the CDs. My son managed to
sllllyyy bend the pin back into place and I have since been extremely careful
when inserting the module and it is working. Good luck.

Hi all
I have one of these click drives sat doing nothing here in my bag.
As for the question about do they work in powerbooks.
In a way NO! well thats what i have found.
I have tried the click drive with the iomega software and the drives
are just not seen by any of the books i tried them in.

These are
5300c / 1400cs/ 3400 / 190/ Wallstreet / Lombard.
And i think that the 1400 is built around NUBUS same as the 5300
series. not PCI

Vicki

Thanks for that Vicki, the 1400s are NUBUS.. That was a typo on my part..

Iomega Clik! and Powerbook 1400cs

2004-11-01 Thread Karl Miller
Hi there!

Is there any Godly (or, semi-Godly) way to use a
Iomega Clik! PCMCIA card drive with a Powerbook
1400cs? They're s cheap and the disks are sooo
cute, that it seems a perfect match, but iomega.com
doesn't have any drivers for it.

Any advice will be taken gladly.

ps. the advice on the CD-ROM drive worked! Thanks!

Karl.

Re: Problems with 1400CS CD-ROM drive

2004-10-27 Thread Tom and Lisa P
Hi there!
I recently acquired a supposedly new CD-ROM drive for
my 1400cs, but when I insert a CD (either audio or
data), it spins around and nothing comes up. The
little yellow light just keeps blinking. The system
profiler recognizes that the CD-ROM drive is indeed
there, but I can't get anything off of it. Am I doing
something wrong? Is there something that I have to do
to get the 1400 to recognize the drive? Or, am I just
postponing the inevitable?
All suggestions are gladly accepted.
Thanks.

One source is www.pure-mac.com, they have a large site dedicated to mac. Go to the
category system
and click on drivers. There are a pile of product name specific drivers there that
might work.
Also try a search on www.vivisimo.com, it is a cluster search engine. It will separate
your search into
categories saving you tons of time looking at all the hits.try a search for
downloads and for
updates, for the cd manufacturer in question. You should hit something.

Thanks for the info.! Is there anyone who can provide
a link to the driver page? I'm having a devil of a
time finding one.

Thanks.

Karl.

Sounds like it's the actual drive that's the problem. You may have to reinstall or
look for driver install
updates on the net, they are readily available. We have had the same type of problem
occur on our

Problems with 1400CS CD-ROM drive

2004-10-27 Thread Karl Miller

Thanks.

Karl.

He shouldn't need a driver but will need a script. You could likely
use one of the generic Hayes scripts.

He is also getting a PC Card Ethernet one, will this work with his 1400cs?
I think it is a Netgear PC Card.
Probably not. For this you definitely need a driver. The best bet
though is to check the manufacturer's website for a Mac driver.

I expect that you will need Mac drivers for both cards. At least, all
the ethernet and modem cards I have stuck in my 1400cs (OS 9.1) needed
them.

Maybe, maybe. But my problem goes back to last June. In San Diego I browsed
for two days then the problem popped up. Back home it worked OK as a test,
then in Wisconsin no success at all, then back home (Rhode Island) no
success until yesterday. I hope it WAS Earthlink and that they fixed it
because I'm off to San Diego again tomorrow. (I hear those jealous sighs!)

Thanks, Adrian; I'll download that app.

I only installed NS as a last resort after IE and iCab wouldn't work. NS is
now gone...

I have my trusty Ruby iMac 400MHz DV desktop at home on a Verizon DSL hookup
- just a few clicks away from "Cassie S." the Earthlink guru (who more or
less threw up her virtual hands after a while, told me to download the
FreePPP dialer, and closed the session.)

Thanks to all. I'll update when I return from Paradise - ah, San Diego...

After four Earthlink Support e-mails which didn't help, I used their live
chat option. The guru gave me Name Server Addresses to add into my TCP/IP
control panel. (I was set up to use PPP.) The addresses given to me were
totally different from the ones the Earthlink Wizard had configured.
Anyway, I restart the 'puter and dial up, make the connection (as usual) and
... no fix. Explorer won't browse, iCab won't browse, Netscape won't browse.
The guru gives me a link to a FreePPP dialer which I install and configure.

Just because I'm curious, how did you manage to use a live chat
option if you didn't have an IP address? Most of those things
require some sort of TCP/IP connectivity (though there are still some
bulletin boards and terminals out there - that option seems unlikely
to me)... It seems to me that if you could get into a chat, you
should have been able to browse the web...

Or do you mean "live chat" in the sense that you are chatting with a

Sounds like configuration of your browser to work with the connection - as
long as you say you are connected. In Netscape 4.xx it is under Edit, then
Preferences..., then set your Identity and Mail Servers correctly. You must
have a different profile for each connection - different for your dialup and
your DSL. Do a search in your finder for "profile manager". Open it and set
your profile.

Mine is set to my login name on Earthlink, my password that I gave to
Earthlink, and the other settings that Earthlink gives: mine was
mail.earthlink.net

I have a dialup connection with earthlink. A DSL connection should not be
that different except for maybe the outgoing mail server name. You can access
the same email account for each profile, but you need a different "outgoing
mail server" for each type of connection, I'll bet. Hope this helps. If not
let me know what your luck is and what you have tried.

2004-08-03 Thread ACFX44501

>I've done every procedure that Earthlink Support suggests to "resolve the

Which is why I totally abandoned Earthlink's software after the first,
successful home connection, using the modem card, had been made.

You make this connection to setup your Earthlink password and to get the
Earthink DNS addresses. Also, to get the phone numbers which are local to
your likely away sites, although this can be done any time, once you have
your home site working.

Now, with the account setup properly, at least for your home site, you
grab copies of the Modem and TCP/IP control panels and you make these
copies your defaults. Subsequent away sites will be cloned from the
originals. Also, you make a note of the DNS addresses which Earthlink
gave you.

Now, when you are away, you clone your Modem and TCP/IP control panels
from the original ones, install the new away number, and ensure that the
DNS address is correct.

Failure to load pages when away is usually related to the DNS address
being wrong, which is why you need to get on-line from your home site,
using Earthlink's software, just once, and them you grab that DNS address
or addresses.

You may have to insert "earthlink.net" in the "Search domains" field of
the TCP/IP control panel.

I was offered this advice:

> Be sure to establish separate home (DSL) and away (modem) configurations
> for both the TCP/IP and Open Transport control panels.

But I don't have a control panel for Open Transport - just an extension.

I have no trouble making the Earthlink connection via my modem card. The
problem is that no browser will work once the connection is made. Not
Internet Explorer, iCab or Netscape.

The really frustrating thing is that just before I went on the road I
checked it out and it worked fine. Then, on the road, nothing. It connected
fine but no pages would open, and I swear I did nothing to change any
configurations!

I've done every procedure that Earthlink Support suggests to "resolve the
problem" but to no avail...

Sigh...

Be sure to establish separate home (DSL) and away (modem) configurations
for both the TCP/IP and Open Transport control panels.

My home 'net access is through Earthlink, but via a router which also
performs all the PPPoE login functions.

My away 'net access is through an Earthlink local access number, using a
3Com/USR 56K PC card modem.

Consequently, I maintain default TCP/IP and Open Transport
configurations, which are simply the Apple supplied configurations, and
in addition I maintain "Home DSL" and "Away Earthlink" configurations.

I always test the "Away Earthlink" configurations before going on the
road, substituting my home area code local access number for the expected
away area code number.

For my 1400s, I use the above-mentioned PC card modem (and a 3Com
EtherFast card).

For my Kanga, I use the builtin modem (36 kB)/e-net connector (a single
RJ-45 supports both).

For my WS II, I use the builtin modem (56 kB) and the builtin e-net
connectors.

Browser problems - PB 1400cs

2004-08-01 Thread William Damkoehler
Hi, Listers.

I'm having a frustrating problem with my browser(s). I had my 1400cs set up
for DSL with an ethernet PC card and all was going well. Last week I needed
to take the 'Book on the road.

Before the trip I reverted to my Global Village 56k modem PC card and
checked my local dialup to earthlink. All went well. Internet Explorer 5.1
and iCab 2.9.7 both browsed admirably on the dialup. Off I went to
Wisconsin.

In the Dairy State, I dialed the local earthlink access #, made the
connection, but the browsers wouldn't open any pages. None. Zip. Zilch. As
far as I know, I had changed nothing.

Back home now, I used the earthlink Wizard to troubleshoot and it reported
all was "OK." I used my trusty local number and made the connection but
still no pages would open - neither in IE, iCab, nor Netscape; and all were
proxy disabled. IE says "attempt to load URL ... failed." iCab reports
"Network error #-3208." Netscape reports "Unable to make network socket
connection."

Anybody have a clue?

Thanks.

Well, the CD is a bit old and its been fumbled around a bit. I'll get
TomeView(or whatever its called) and attempt to extract it. If worse
comes to worse, I'll just copy it from my System 7.5.5 or Mac OS 9.2
installation.

Well, I was just fumbling with the installer, and I found that the
Trackpad control panel is causing the problems. I got the system
installed, works great, the CD isnt machine specific. I know the error
you're referring to, but that's only if you don't dig deep enough. If
you go through the Full Install Pieces folder, the whole Mac OS 8
installer is there.
Well you learn something new every day! I didn't know the workaround
was _that_ easy... I'm glad you got the installer working. Can you
now just unpack the Trackpad control panel from the Tome manually or
is it totally corrupted? It seems odd that a system installer would
have that particular problem - you'd think Apple would have
discovered that in testing...

Re: PowerBook 1400cs & Mac OS 8

2004-04-03 Thread Dana Collins
Hello Joe,
You have the wrong CD for your unit. OS Install CDs will generally come in
two flavors, retail versions (which recognizes all targeted units as
supported, and will install the OS on any of them), and machine-specific
versions, which are shipped with the unit, and are intended to be used only
for the target unit's model type (these CDs have an OS enabler of sorts in
their system folder that, iirc, communicate with the unit's ROM type to
establish recognition). Your CD is expecting a G3 unit - I am surprised that
you get as far as you do in the install process - most of my colleagues that
have tried your route usually receive an error message just after clicking
the install button.

Cast your net out over the swap-list, requesting a retail version of OS 8.1
to buy.
Best regards,
Dana

The Apple Spec Database shows the original OS for the 1400cs/117 as
7.5.3 with the PowerBook 1400 Enabler. I don't know for sure about
using the enabler. I think that the original installer for this
model had a specialized version of the OS 7.5.3 installer. It would
probably be modified to recognize the 1400 and to install the enabler
along with OS 7.5.3. This was commonly done when a machine came out
after an OS release as opposed to those machines that were released
concurrent with the OS.

I'm not certain how you would proceed. My best guess is that you
need to download the PB1400 enabler from Apple and add it to your
installer boot system and also install it on your 1400s HD.

Installing OS 7.6.1 would avoid this problem.

didn't recognize the Mac. I called Apple support, but obviously, they
couldn't help me. Anyone know how to put System 7 on this thing?

non-waking 1400cs

2004-02-26 Thread COCCORP
Howdy from the Winter Wonderland that is...

...Atlanta?!?

Anyway; I am having a problem w/ my 1400cs/183. Upon waking from any extended
sleep, I get a screen as white as my neighborhood...

...the SNOW! I mean the snowy conditions today! :-D

And then sometimes, when I wake, it shows the desktop (kinda) and then
freezes. It sounds like the HD is not spinning back up when I wake the Powerbook; Is
this a HD or a software problem? I am pushin' OS 8.1 with a 2gb HD.

Thanks,

Craig W.

Hmm, these cards (the supposed 16-bit FireWire card from IBM) have
always been vapor to me. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's just bunk. The
only references I've seen to FireWire cards from IBM are refs to

So, no, you still can't do FireWire on a 1400.

I'll be the first to admit I'm wrong, however, if someone can come up

1400cs Battery Goofiness

2004-02-15 Thread William Damkoehler
Hi, all.

My ongoing frustration with my 1400's battery takes such interesting turns
that I thought you'd all like to hear the latest!

I've downloaded both "Battery Amnesia" and "My Battery" and have had
"Battery Recondition" aboard for years. Typically I'd get maybe 30 minutes
moderate usage after a monthly recondition but that time would dwindle
quickly down to about, oh, 10 minutes on a lucky day.

I've reset the Power Management Unit a few times, zapped the PRAM, and used
Battery Recondition maybe half a dozen times in the last week and have had
wildly varying results; but here's the current pattern:

After a night plugged into the charger I'll pull the plug in the morning and
work off the battery. Maybe 4 or 5 minutes into the session the first
"Reserve Power" warning pops up - "My Battery" would show a good 95% power
left at that point. Then I'll get maybe another 5 minutes until the "No
Reserve Power Left" warning comes up and forced sleep comes upon the 1400 -
"My Battery" showing usually no less than 90% power left. But here's the
really weird thing: if I then plug the 'Book back in for maybe 10 minutes
and then unplug it and go back on battery I can work for another half hour
or more before the Sandman arrives again! Right now I'm 30 minutes into the
"post-replug" phase and still going strong. "My Battery" shows 83% left!

What the heck!?

The motherboard of the PB 1400/166 is different (slightly) than the 117 MHz
& 133 MHz versions, and you can't swap parts between them.

Only a few 117 and 133 MHz models had the new ROMS required to use the
Apple 166 MHz module. I dont know why Apple did this, but it is
defintely the ROMs. Read off the numbers on the 2 ROM chips.

Hi, Ed.

I'm sending you an e-mail with complete instructions off-list.

The one hitch is the holes in the bracket. I replaced a drive and had to
drill 4 new holes in the bracket but it's no big deal.

Good luck!

Open the lid and look at the speaker screen above the keyboard. Slide it to
the left about half an inch, then lift it straight up. The keyboard can now
be gently pried up to reveal the hard drive cradle.

I think you have to use version 3 or later, as that had the stuff added
that replaces OT/PPP. On my 8.1 install CD (actually for a beige G3), it
lies in: Full Install Pieces > Software Installers > Apple Remote Access
Client. Don't know about your CD...

Otherwise, if you have to enter the older Mac purgatory, try:

(You think that page is bad, I remember when for some reason a few years
ago I had to access Micro$oft's ftp site (now defunct?), where they had 1
folder there for obsolete software versions, with *thousands* of files in
the same directory, that took 20 minutes to load into the browser
window!...)

You can try that, it shouldn't hurt to try. You might have to bless the system folder
on the Zip though which means you could a little trouble getting the cart out of the
drive but you can always turn power off, it isn't insurmountable by any means. I
haven't booted a PPC mac from a Zip disk but I have booted 030 macs that way just fine.

8.1 from which powerbook? Beware of installations from much different hardware, G3
systems won't start up oldermacs etc.

Luck,

problem is I just bought a copy of 8.0, I don't want to have to turn
around
and buy another copy at a greater price... You know of anyway I can
make
this work with 8?
When you boot from the 8.0 CD, are you able to see the HD but there's
just a little text file readme on it? That's definitive for the HFS+
incompatibility with the 8.0 system CD, read the text file.

No, there's really isn't a way to let 8.0 read it, you are going to
have to either put your old system back on by getting an 8.1 or 8.6
install CD to be able to even see your hard drive contents again.
That's an easy solution.

I don't *think* you can make an 8.1 bootable floppy, IIRC that stopped
at 7.5.5.

There are a couple more complicated solutions though.
IF you have another Mac (powerbook required to make it easy I guess),
and a CF flash adapter, you could build a 8.1 system onto the CF as has
been mentioned here recently, use that to boot from, then copy the
minimal 8.1 system to the 1400CS and bless it. That would be at least
a start.

Or you could mount the 1400 onto a 8.1 or higher Mac in SCSI disk mode,
and put 8.1 on it that way.
Is the 8.1 a free downloadable update (I think so, but it's been
years...) ? then you'd just have to apply that update to the system on
the HD.

You could also buy another Mac (goodwill 7200 or something, $20), put
your 8.0 plus the 8.1 update on it, hook to the 1400 in SCSI disk mode
, mount the 1400cs hard drive, put 8.1 update on it. And after all
this you still wouldn't have an easy 8.1 reinstall for later.

I think just buying or borrowing an 8.1 or 8.6 install CD as suggested
is your best solution.

HTH.

problem is I just bought a copy of 8.0, I don't want to have to turn around
and buy another copy at a greater price... You know of anyway I can make
this work with 8?

Yeah, a couple. 1. You may have converted to HFS+. 2. You can't down
grade a system without a complete wipe.

Bite the bullet, buy 8.6. Save your date. Wipe and install 8.6 from
scratch. It will result in a cleaner, more fun upgrade experience. Load
yor saved date. Carry on.

1400cs issues

2003-11-13 Thread nathan

Was having problems making PPP work under 8.1. So I reinstalled 8.0
thinking that would fix the problem.. Only to restart my laptop to see:

" This startup disk will not work on this Macintosh model. Use the latest
installer tp update the disk for this model."

 Restart

Downloaded the HD updater, well hell every updater I could find on Apple's
website. Still no dice.. Any ideas?

The only problem is that OS 8 came on the laptop. Dl'ed the 8.1 update from
Apple's legacy software site. And since only dailup is offered here in
Turkey, it took forever... Tried dl'ing OpenTransport Suite 1.0.1, no dice..
1.0.8 didn't do any good either... Think I'll just get a Compact Flash card,
turn the VM on and install 9.0

Okay, no big deal right? Wrong. Went into the Ext Manager and

on, and restarted.. When I restart I get an ext error message and have
to
reboot and hold shift.. Boots up with no problem. So I deleted it, and
grabbed it off of my 540c PPC upgraded laptop also running 8.1, no
dice..
Any ideas?
Re-install OT from the 8.1 OS CD. (It's a custom install, but you can
re-install just that.)

In the back between the printer and keyboard ports is a small rectangle.
This is the reset button. Push in and hold for 5-10 seconds and the machine
should restart automatically.
