Sound Without Sight, first monthly meet-up featuring Slau

2024-01-31 Thread Peter Bosher

Hi All,

Monthly Meet-ups
About the meet-up sessions
Sound Without Sight is a community-led initiative, which collates and
commissions resources to support blind and partially sighted musicians,
audio engineers, voiceover artists, and other industry professionals to
thrive. We want Sound Without Sight to grow into a thriving community
that showcases the work of blind and partially sighted creatives, and
how they navigated the industry to find themselves in their current role.
Starting in February 2024, we will be curating monthly virtual meet-up
sessions, which will bring together established professionals, community
members who are just starting out, and everybody in between, creating a
space to share knowledge, solutions, and tips for success.
The sessions will be open, informal, and supportive – we hope that all
attendees will feel comfortable to ask questions as well as share advice.

How will the sessions be structured?
1. Each session will begin with a live discussion between a headline
guest speaker or panel and a host from the Sound Without Sight team. The
host will ask curated questions, including relevant ones submitted in
advance by the community.
2. We will then open up to questions and discussion between attendees,
which could be about anything related to music or audio.
3. Finally, we will round off the session by playing out audio
submissions and sharing updates from community members. Got a new
release coming out? Tried something new or achieved something that you’d
like to share? Let us know before the session and we’ll make sure
there’s time to shout about it!

When and where?
Third Thursday of the month, 7.30pm UK time. Sessions will take place on
Zoom and last around an hour.

Next session
Thursday 15th February 2024, featuring Slau Halatyn.
We are excited to announce our first Monthly Meet-up on Thursday 15th
February featuring headline guest, Slau Halatyn. Slau is a New York
based producer, studio owner, musician, and advocate for accessibility
within music production tools. He is best known for his supporting the
development of accessibility within Pro Tools and Sibelius, helping to
ensure that these pieces of software are compatible with VoiceOver.
This 60-90 minute session will be of particular interest for people with
an interest in music production, although everyone is welcome.

Slau will be discussing:
– His journey as a recording engineer, producer, and studio owner.
– Tips for honing the people skills involved in being a producer and
recording engineer.
– His experience of working with Avid to improve accessibility of Pro
Tools.
This is a relaxed, informal discussion and audience participation is
encouraged. We advised that you contact us with any questions you may
have so that we can ensure that they are included in our discussion.
There will also be time at the end for a Q so that you have the
opportunity to ask any questions that may occur to you during the session.

Register via Zoom from the Sound Without Sight website here:

Hi again Luis,

I meant to say VO-Shift-M for the context menu.  My apologies.

Re: I need help with Workspace. As anyone used it?

2019-08-29 Thread peter bosher
Hi Luis,

I had to use Workspace a lot at one time, and I'm a little rusty now but
see whether this helps:

Open the default Workspace window. When you type your search-term in the
search box, results start appearing gradually, so VO-left and it will
give you the number of results.  Wait until that stabilises.   Now go to
the last table in the window and interact.  Here you can look down
through the results, and if you make a hotspot for the audition button,
then you can quickly hear each file.

Once you find the one you want, there are two ways to get it into your
session.  The quick way is to press VO-m for the context menu, then
choose "spot to edit insertion".  That will only appear on compatible
files, but even then you have to be sure it's in the right format.  The
other more reliable but longer way, is to pick "reveal in finder" and
copy it to the audio files in your session, from where you can import it
as a clip or new track.

I hope that helps a bit.

Best,

Peter

Re: Editing a long take

2018-11-22 Thread peter bosher
Hi Ramy,

Two things which might help you:

In ProTools preferences, operation tab, transport cluster, check the
checkbox "audio during fast-forward/rewind", set the "custom FF/RW
speed" to your preference but I find around 500 % is good. then make
sure that the numeric keypad mode is set to "transport".

Now you should be able to hear samples as you fast-forward with num-pad
2 or rewind with numpad 1.

The second thing is that you can hear playback at increasingly fast
speeds by holding down the control key and pressing num-pad 6 through 9.

so, while editing, i have all the audio track as 1 track, is there a

let’s say that the Rapper started his rap on bar 2, for 2 beats, he
keeps silent til bar 9. and start singing again.
of cores, i do not tknow when he will sing to open and close the

 to edit it.
sited engineers tcan see the places that he sang as strong waves, and
 start editing before them.
 is there an accessibl solution?

Dragging clips to timeline

2018-02-01 Thread Peter Bosher

Hi All,

When using FloTools to drag clips from the clip-list onto the timeline,
is it possible to spot them to the selection cursor time, or do they
always go to the beginning of the track?

I'm working on a project where I have to bring in lots of pre-recorded
clips on different tracks at different times, and I'd so much like to
nail this process, because it is still hit and miss for me.  So, if you
have patience, please could you check my procedure below?

I find the clip I need in the clip-list with the VO cursor, press
command-option-shift comma, then stop interacting, find the track where
I want the clip to go, (not in the tracklist table but in the edit
window), then press command-option-shift period.  Am I missing
anything?  Sometimes it works, but sometimes it will say 'dragging
failed'.  and it always goes to time zero.   Any pointers on exact
details, especially spotting to the selection time, very much appreciated.

Best,

Peter

Re: FloTools one-time only

2018-01-10 Thread Peter Bosher
Thanks Slau, but the 'Launch engine at log-in' checkbox was checked, and
the issue remains.   So the work-around for now is to run KM first each
time, which is better than having to re-install FloTools, but not
ideal.   Any further ideas and, although not completely related, would
you recommend upgrading to High Sierra yet?  Has the VO focus issue been
resolved, any other issues to be wary of?

Peter

FloTools strangeness in 2.3.1

2017-12-19 Thread Peter Bosher

Hi All,

I've been using FloTools since it was launched and besides all the
appreciation for its productivity value, I've always found it very
reliable.  Since upgrading from 2.30 to 2.3.1, it completely stops
working after I shut down.  So, I install 2.3.1, after which it works
perfectly for one run of ProTools.  I then close PT and shut down.  Next
day, FloTools appears to have gone.  No keystrokes give any response.  I
then reinstall it and it works fine again for just one time.

Has anyone else seen this, and is there anything I can try?  I'm running
PT 12.8.2 under Sierra.

Best,

Peter

Thanks so much Christopher-Mark, things like that are so incredibly
easy, but only once you know how. Yet again this amazing list proves its

All that to say how much I appreciate your taking the time to answer,

CD burning re-visited

Hi All,

A few weeks back there was a thread about accessible CD-burning Mac
software.   One of the recommendations was 'Simply Burns', but the
download I find dates from 2009 and won't immediately install because
it's unidentified by Apple.  Is that the right one do you think?  And
What was the alternative one called? A download website would be great.

Superior Drummer versions

Hi All,

I have SD 2 on DVD which I've been using under Windows.

When I try to install it on the Mac it refuses, saying  I need OS 10.4
or higher.  I'm actually running Sierra.  Question:  will the last
version of SD2 run under Sierra?   If so, then I guess I can get this
via the Product Manager.  If not, then from recent messages I see that
there are doubts about the accessibility of SD3, so in short, what's my
best option for SD with PT?

Thunderbolt or Firewire

Hi All,

I need to choose a new audio interface, and looking around suggests that
Thunderbolt may be better than FireWire.   I only have one Thunderbolt

Secondary question, do you have a recommendation for an interface with
at least 4 (but not more than 8) independent inputs and MIDI in, from
the likes of Focusrite or Mackie, whether TB or FW?

Go-to reverb

2017-06-22 Thread Peter Bosher

Hi All,

When possible, I prefer to have one really good plug-in that I get to
know well, rather than a whole bunch with different interfaces. For
reverb, That used to be Lexicon Pantheon. I find PT's native D-verb
remarkably horrible, so my question is, if you had to choose just one
go-to reverb plug-in, to use with PT, for quality first, and
accessibility too, which one would you recommend, and a rough price and
website would be really helpful too if easy to do please.

Whilst writing, I just have to add my heartfelt thanks and appreciation
to Slau, Chi and the others for Flotools 2.2. It rocks.

Clips to timeline in Sierra

2017-06-13 Thread Peter Bosher

Hi All,

Since running Sierra, I'm no longer able to get clips from the clips
list onto the timeline, using the methods in Slau's tutorial.

Having selected one or more clips, when I do a mouse-down, VO speaks
'Now in mix ...". and focus has indeed jumped to the mix window. On
rare occasions when it has said 'mouse down on edit', when I then go to
the tracklist table and do a mouse-up, it says 'mouse up on Apple', and
there is no new track.

This is a total show-stopper for me as I constantly have to import
files. Firstly, can anyone suggest what I might try, and secondly, is
there any chance that FloTools might address this long-standing
difficulty. I'm so tempted right now to go back to Sonar for certain
tasks where this was a cinch ... but seriously, there has to be a
reliable way to get files in. Even when I used to import them as new
tracks, I found that they couldn't be edited normally if they weren't in
the clips list, so what to do?

Re: Possible FloTools keystroke conflict

2017-05-17 Thread Peter Bosher

Hi again All,

So I tried the Oreo Monster's suggestion. When I hold down control and
right click the physical mouse, VO speaks "Menu, four items, loop
audition ...". but two questions then arise: how do I even access
that menu? it disappears when I release the mouse button, so I can't
cursor up and down in the menu.

Second, that menu is probably a context menu for the audition button,
rather than for the highlighted file, so the problem remains, how to
action a file that I'm auditioning with up/down arrow?

Perhaps there is no other way than counting as you go, and then
returning with the VO cursor. Can anybody try to replicate this
process and see whether you find a foolproof method. I feel like
foolproof is the operative word here, but the hoops we have to jump
through ...

Best,

Peter

Hi Peter,
OK, that makes more sense. The contextual menu approach might be helpful but,
if anything you wish to do involves clicking or dragging, the problem will be
that lists of files might not necessarily scroll and thus VoiceOver can be

Native Instruments released a fix for the problem. In the mean time, however, I
decided to nuke & pave the studio computer to do a fresh install of Sierra. I
might not have undertaken such a task but it just so happens that my Magma
chassis's power supply died and I had no other option but to send it back to San
Diego for repair. With a lot of down time on my hands, I wiped the studio drive and
did a clean install. Needless to say, it's a super tedious process and can take
days to tweak. I had freshly installed disc images that were ready to go in case of
catastrophic failure but, unfortunately, they were all based on Yosemite. I had
never installed Sierra on the studio computer so I had no image of that disc. Well,
now I'll have an opportunity to create one as soon as I'm done tweaking. The most
problematic stuff is the reauthorization of non iLok-based software, stuff with
challenge/response and hardware fingerprinting. Anyway, it's difficult to say
whether it's worth it. I'd say, do two backups of your system drive and go for the
direct update. Try it for a few days and see how it goes. If everything's fine,
you're all set. If not, then make a detailed plan.

Workspace for auditioning sound effects

2017-03-07 Thread Peter Bosher

Hi All,

The workspace window indexes all drives, and allows for powerful
searching on file names and meta-data.

I need to search through large collections of sound effects, and quickly
audition the results. For example, if I search for shower, crash,
chaffinch, or whatever, I may have over a hundred results.

I can just about audition these but it's incredibly painful. I have to
interact with the list, then when I find one of interest, I shift-click,
stop interacting, find the audition button and click that. Then, when
I interact again, I'm back at the top of the list, so have to VO-cursor
down to number 63 or whatever, then repeat the process.

So, firstly, is there a better way? and secondly, is it something which
FloTools could address?

Best,

Peter

RE: message to Peter regarding importing of files to tracks

2016-09-08 Thread Peter Bosher
Hi Slau,

Your scenario may have some bearing on the possible bug, but what I was trying
to achieve was importing files directly as new tracks, without putting them in
the clips list first. It seemed that in this type of session, it was necessary
to import at least one into the clips list before it would allow me to make
them into new tracks.

If you would like to try to duplicate this as per your other message, then
perhaps I need to get one of those example sessions to you for you to try out.
If you'd like me to do that - it would have to be over the weekend - then let

Hi Peter,

I was stunned today when, after having imported numerous tracks to a mastering
session, one of the files I was importing wouldn’t create a new track. This is
the first time I’ve ever seen this behavior. However, I was able to eventually
fix the issue. The only thing that I had done differently between the initial
imports and the one that didn’t work was that I had done a search in the Clips
List for a specific file. The only thing displayed in the Clips List was my
search results. I set the Clips List to show all files and then I happen to
hide the Clips List. After that, importing to a new track worked as expected.
I’m wondering whether that might help. Let me know.

Hi Slau,

I think this is a bug. I showed it to one of the sighted Studio Managers and
he could duplicate the problem without VoiceOver running. The solution seems
to be to import the file into the clips list first, and from then on, importing
as new track starts working. I’ll soon find out whether this is consistent,
and at the same time I’ll check out your advice on dragging clips on to the

There are some versions that are limited to 32 voices. If you have 16 stereo

I might try deleting a few tracks from those sessions, but otherwise any
further thoughts very welcome.

Hi Peter,

I’m thinking you might not have a preference or two set properly for importing
and converting to session format. I’m leaving the studio for lunch and will be
back in a little while. I’ll try to look for those preferences. In the mean
time, take a look at the Preferences window in the various tabs to see where
there might be some import preferences that’ll affect how files are converted
upon import.

Hi Peter,

OK, to be clear, and then pressing the Return key before hitting the Done

getting to the dialog that asks where to import then it stands to reason that
you’re doing the aforementioned correctly. Also, you’re sure that the track
radio button is definitely selected? I’ve never encountered any problem with
this functionality. Let me know.

Hi Peter,

To get a detailed explanation of how the Import Audio dialog works, it’s best
to read that section of the Pro Tools reference Guide. It explains everything
pretty clearly. For now, however, what you’re doing is exactly right. If the
Track radio button is selected, you should see a new track appear in the
session. If you have selection chosen in the pop-up, I believe the clip should
appear at the point shown in the Start field of the Edit window. Did you try
tabbing in that track? By default, after importing, I’d imagine the clip would
be selected in the timeline so the edit selection range should correspond to
the new clip length. as a test, however, try pressing Return first (to get to
the beginning of the timeline and then press Tab to jump to the beginning of
the clip. As an alternative, you can try importing the clip to the session
start instead. See if that works. If it does, You can simply select the clip,
cut it and then paste it into the location you want in the timeline. Hope that
helps. Keep us posted.

Control surface/audio interface recommendations

2016-07-21 Thread Peter Bosher
Hi All,

What would you recommend as the best current option for a control surface with
8 main faders, including a good audio interface?

I'm looking for something that is similar to the old Digi 002. I asked this
question a few days back with no replies, because I needed to check that it's
not possible to use the Digi with PT12. Otherwise, a second hand one would be
a good way to go, but I don't think there are 64-bit drivers for it, so, again,
what's the current best option? I've heard good things about the Avid Artist
range, but is this the same kind of animal, and which one would you advise?

Best,

Peter

Digi 002 or equivalent

2016-07-19 Thread Peter Bosher
Hi All,

Am I right in thinking that there are no 64-bit drivers for the Digi 002, so
it's effectively obsolete in PT12?

If so, then what is the nearest thing, i.e. something which combines an 8-fader
control surface with a good audio interface?

Best,

Peter

Re: Editing problem, please please help!

2016-07-18 Thread Peter Bosher

Hi Jesse,

There are three main editing modes in PT, and if you look in the edit
mode part of the edit window, you'll see which is selected. You can
switch between them with shortcuts. These are:

F1 shuffle.
F2 Slip
F3 spot.

In shuffle mode, when you delete a section, everything moves forward to
fill the gap. This is what you say you don't want.
In slip mode, when you delete a section, the remaining stuff stays where
it was in the timeline, so the deletion will be silent, and vocals will
stay where they were.
In spot mode, I believe that you can specify a position on the timeline,
but I don't know how that works so perhaps others can explain.

Peter

Option click

Productivity tips?

2016-06-02 Thread Peter Bosher
Hi All,

After using PT in earnest for a couple of months, I'm now reasonably confident
with basic editing and mixing, including things like inserts and sends and
using some plug-ins, but I still find it way, way slower than using Sonar with
Caketalking, and I'm wondering whether anyone has some tips to speed things up.

For example, if I want to know whether track 7 is muted, or check which tracks
are currently armed, or the volume setting for track 12, or any number of
things like this, I can do it with a couple of keystrokes in Sonar, whereas in
PT, even using VO hotspots, It still seems to require quite a lot of VO
cursoring around.

I've seen references to Keyboard Maestro. Would that help with this kind of
thing? Could anyone give a few examples of tips and tricks you use to speed
things up?

Best,

Peter

Using the Workspace window

2016-05-20 Thread Peter Bosher
Hi All,

The sound effects library used in creating audio dramas contains hundreds of
gigabytes of material taken from hundreds of CD's. The Workspace window is
used to search through all those files, some of which have really unhelpful
file names, so it's vital to use the meta-data for searching. I have two
questions:

In PT version 12, I can use the Workspace window to carry out a search, and
then look through the list of results, click on an item, then on 'audition' to
hear them. Now, if I find one I want, the only way I know to bring it into the
session is by doing VO-Shift-M for its context menu, then 'reveal in Finder'.
Then I can use 'import audio' to find the file and bring it in. This seems a
bit clunky, though it does work, and this in itself is progress as it's taken
me a while to get this far. So, first question, is there an easier way to
bring a file into a session from the Workspace results?

Second question: in PT version 10, the Workspace seems to me to be completely
inaccessible. There are what seem like hundreds of buttons, which VO speaks
as 'equals' or 'less than', and a large number of lists and text fields with no
identification to say what they are for. So, was anybody ever able to use the
Workspace in version 10? If so, any tips?

Best,

Peter

RE: Selecting in clips table

2016-04-26 Thread Peter Bosher
Hi Slau and thanks as ever, both those editing options are checked, as well as
the relevant ones in the Options menu for selection following time line. I'll
just have one more go at explaining the problem:

Starting with nothing selected, in a session where there are a series of clips,
all on one track, in sequence along the time line. I go into the clips table,
and identify the clip I need. It's a virgin clip with no editing yet. I hit
VO-space on it, and VO now reports that it's selected. If I stop interacting
with the table, VO still reports the selection, e.g. row 79 of 83. But the
selection start point hasn't moved from where it was, and I have no way to hear
that clip, or move to it in the time line.

This procedure worked fine on a PT10 machine, with the same session and same
preferences. Is there any obvious step I'm missing, or another way round?
It's looking like a sticking point at the moment so I really need to sort it
somehow.

Peter

Hi Peter,

In the Editing tab of the Preferences window, make sure the first two
checkboxes are checked. This will ensure that anything selected in either the
timeline or the clips list will be mutually affected.

Here's one important thing to consider. When you have a clip that you've
imported into a new track in a session or even an existing clip that was
recorded within the timeline, as soon as you make one edit, Pro Tools will, by
default, create at least one more clip in the clips list. Each subsequent edit
does the same. this means that, when you select a clip that has been even
slightly edited in the timeline (let's say you just trimmed some silence from
the beginning), the clip that will now be selected in the clips list will not
be the first one but, most likely the second or third one down (depending on
how you edited the clip.

The opposite scenario is an equal consideration. In other words, if you have
edited a clip in any way whatsoever, there will be at least two instances of
the clip in the clips list. Let's say you click on the first instance of that
clip, since the actual clip in the timeline matches the second or third clip in
the clips list, selecting the first clip in the list will not select anything
in the timeline because that unedited clip doesn't really reside in the
timeline but rather an edited version of it.

Pay attention to the name of the clip and what's appended to the name of the
clip. When there's an underline following the name, that signifies the
chronological clip number as it was recorded in time. This means the order in
which it was created and not the order in which it appears. In other words, if
you start recording your first clip from the 3 minute mark and then back up and
record a second clip starting from the 1 minute mark, the clip that appears at
the 1 minute mark will have "_02 " appended to it and the original clip
recorded at the 3 minute mark will have "_01" in its file name.
Beyond the underlined numbers, if the clip has been edited in any way, Pro
Tools will append a hyphen along with a number to indicate that the clip has
been edited. Let's say you recorded a clip and its name was "Vocal_01." If you
were to split the clip in half, the first new clip would be called
"Vocal_01-01" and the second half would become "Vocal_01-02." If you were to
then simply delete a portion of the second clip, the remaining clip in the
timeline would be called "vocal_01-03." All the while, a copy of each clip
would reside in the clips list. If you want to cut down on the number of clips
in the clips list, you can remove them by selecting unused clips from the clips
list pop-up menu and either using Command-b or the Clear key on the numeric
keypad. You'll have the option of deleting or removing. The ramifications of
these various options are fairly detailed so I won't go into it here but,
hopefully, what I've explained will help.

Selecting in clips table

2016-04-26 Thread Peter Bosher
Hi All,

I really need to find a reliable way to select a clip from the clips table, and
jump to that point on the time line.

On one machine running pT10 this is perfectly easy. You find the clip in the
table, press VO-space, and that jumps you to the corresponding clip and selects
it. All good, but on PT 12 machines this doesn't work at all. I have checked
both the options "link time line and edit selection", and "Link track and edit
selection", as per a previous message.

If you know a way to select a clip, ideally audition it, and then get to it on
the time line, I'd really appreciate a pointer please.

Best,

Peter

Hi Peter,

To avoid the challenge of dragging clips from the Clips list to the timeline,
when you go through the process of selecting tracks to import, choose the radio
button that specifies "new track" as the destination rather than the clips
list. This will place the selected file into a newly-created track. You can
further specify whether you'd like the file to be placed at the start of the
session or the current location or you can spot it and define the location,
etc. Once the files are in the session, you can cut and paste them onto any
track. Hope that helps,
Slau

Importing audio files

2016-04-25 Thread Peter Bosher
Hi All,

I need to import music and other audio files into sessions, as opposed to
recording them as new tracks.

So far this seems pretty difficult. I can use file import to get files into
the clip list, but how do you then put a clip onto the timeline on the correct
track?

Someone advised me to use the workspace window, but that doesn't seem
accessible, or certainly not intuitive.

Please can somebody advise on an effective way to bring audio into a session
and place it where needed?

Best,

Peter

RE: Adjusting gain of selected clip

2016-04-22 Thread Peter Bosher
Hi John André

Many thanks, that's really helpful. A couple of notes in case it helps
anyone. To get that to work, on this system at least, you need to disable the
Mission Control Shortcut keystrokes, even though it looked as though they were
set to shift up and down arrows.

While exploring, I found that you can also change the gain of the selection
with the mouse-wheel while holding down control and shift. That might just
prove useful.

Anyway many thanks again.

Hi Peter,

While the clip is selected, press control-shift-up arrow or down arrow to
adjust the gain. The amount of each adjustment is set in the preferences.

Remember, you don’t have to separate the clip first, just make a selection in
the edit window and make your adjustments.

Hi Peter,

I'm out of town and I don't have much time to give a detailed reply but here
are a couple of ideas:

First, make sure you check the option for clips to follow track selection or
something to that effect. It might be track follows clip selection or, in
the old language, region selection. This checkbox is in the Preferences
dialog but I can't remember precisely where. When you select a clip, it will
automatically select the same clip in the Clips table and vice versa.

To verify what a clip's name is, select it in the timeline within the edit
window and press Command-Shift-r which is the command to rename a clip.
You'll see the name of the current clip. Remember to press escape to cancel
out of the dialog. This only works when the Edit window is open and is the
frontmost window.

2016-03-08 Thread Peter Bosher

Hi All,

Ever since installing iLok my Mac has become paranoid. If I open
Safari, I get a message which VoiceOver can't see. It says: "ComCenter
wants to use the "login" Keychain". This is pretty annoying. Is this
at all expected behaviour linked with iLok? A second problem is that I
am forced to enter a password and log in when I switch the machine on,
even though log-in options say that I may log in automatically. If
anyone can advise how to sort these things that would be a bonus while I
try everything I can, but I'd really like to know whether it's directly
linked to iLok.

Best,

Peter

ElCapitan

2016-03-04 Thread Peter Bosher

Hi All,

Thanks to Matt who replied off-list to my query about missing
track-info, though it's not yet resolved, but please could somebody
just give me a quick steer on whether or not it's safe to upgrade to
ElCapitan with PT 12.4? Any down sides?

Best,

Peter

Track info not spoken

2016-03-03 Thread Peter Bosher

Hi All,

I'm working through the PWS recording tutorial. I've created a new
session, and added an audio track, a click track and a master fader. I
gave the audio track a name. So far so good, but when I interact with
the track list table, none of the track info is spoken as it is in the
tutorial, for example, it will say:

"column 1, row 1, 1 item"
I can move around the table and see that there are 4 rows, but no info
at all is spoken. What might be causing this, and what can I try?

In case it relates, I'm running PT 12.4 under Mountain Lion, and I do
now wonder whether I should upgrade to ElCapitan. Any thoughts on that
too please?

Best,

Peter

FW1884 feasible or replacement

2016-02-26 Thread Peter Bosher

Hi All,

My trusty FW1884 still works under Windows 7 64-bit running under Boot
Camp on my 2012 Mac Mini.

I'd really like to use it with ProTools as a stop-gap, but I have a
feeling it's just not possible. There is no native 64 bit Mac
driver. I've read about booting into 32 bit mode to get the old driver
to work. I have stuck with Mountain Lion because I think that's the
last OS which allowed booting into 32 bit mode, but even if that's true,
would PT 12.4 run in that mode?

In short, please can someone who knows more about these things than I do
tell me whether it's likely to be feasible at all? If so, how?

Finally, if not, and if you know the FW1884, can you suggest an
alternative that does a similar job from the likes of Digi-design,
Mackie, Focusrite and so-on?

Best,

Peter

ProTools 10

2016-02-10 Thread Peter Bosher

Hi All,

I'm starting a job in April where they are using ProTools 10. I
believe that version 11 was the first to be truly accessible, but can
anyone tell me how usable 10 was, and, as I'm learning with 12.4, what
are the most important changes in operation from 10 to 12?

I don’t recall explicitly changing those settings myself, but there’s a chance
that I may have done this while following the Pro Tools with Speech tutorials a
while back. Anyways everything seems to be great now, many thanks!

Hi Robin,

If I'm understanding this correctly, you're saying that the level changes
periodically but essentially reaches a peak of -15. Now, if your preferences
are set to have an infinite peak hold, that all makes sense. In other words,
the value would change, in this case, getting incrementally higher until the
highest peak is reached. I personally keep the peak hold at 3 seconds and only
use the peak display to keep track of highest attained peaks. In the Peak
section of the Metering tab of the Preferences dialog, the clip and peak
indicator radio buttons are in two columns. I don't recall which is on the left
and which is on the right but, at any rate, make sure clip is infinite and I'd
suggest peak to be set at 3 seconds.

With that setting, your level meter will eventually go down to nothing or a
very low value when there's no signal passing through the track.

Hope that helps,

Slau

Hi all,
I haven’t touched PT in a while due to lack of time, but now I want to get back
on track with it and improve my skills and overall knowledge of PT.
So, I downloaded and installed PT 12.4 on my Mac, everything seems to work just
fine. However, I’ve noticed an odd issue in the Mix window when it comes to
reading level meters.
I first noticed this when I was recording input from a mic. I armed the mic and
checked the level meter, the DB value was changing just as expected. At some
point I blew into the microphone in an attempt to make it clip on purpose. I
then noticed that the value changed to -15, that’s where it then actually
stayed. Even with absolutely no noise on that channel the level stayed at -15.
At this point, I decided to press VO space on the level value, at which point
it started changing again, up until it stopped once again at around -5DB. I’ve
also observed this issue in a PT session, where the level of the master fader
would be updated during playback but stop at some point (this doesn’t always
happen at the same spot in the recording but at different times). Pressing VO
space on it gets it going again for a while, but that would never last longer
than a minute or 2.
Has anybody else discovered this issue? I was browsing the list archives and
discovered that another person had a similar issue, which was caused by a
floating window being in the way. However, I made sure to check that there are
no floating windows in the way, the „Hide all floating windows“ in the PT menu
bar is actually dimmed. So, are there any other known solutions to fix this
problem?
Many thanks for any help!
Best regards,
Robin

Hi Peter,
you definitely don’t have to wait until Avid has new iLok keys in stock. Instead, you
could try looking around on Amazon, that’s how I got mine in about 24 hours. Once you
received your iLok, you can create an account on the ilok.com
website and download the License Manager from there.
The License Manager is basically used to register your new iLok dongle to your
account and to transfer new licenses onto the dongle, this is something which
used to be inaccessible with VO but has fortunately become accessible thanks to
the latest License Manager upgrade!
Once you’re set up with your ilok.com account and dongle,
you can either purchase PT directly, or you can get a free 30-day trial to get a
first impression before spending the money.
Good luck, HTH!

Buying ProTools and iLok

2016-01-28 Thread Peter Bosher

Hi All,

I've been trying to buy a subscription to PT 12.4 on the Avid website,
but this requires iLok details, and when I add the iLok smart key to the
cart it shows as out of stock. As I'm completely new to iLok, please
could somebody tell me whether I can buy the smart key in a computer
store, in the UK, or should I try the iLok websited, or wait until it's
back in stock through AVID. In short, what's the simplest way to do this?

Hi All, When I get my new Mac - thanks to all for advice on that - it will come with Mountain Lion. If I put the latest version of ProTools on it, will there be enough accessibility to start learning PT, or would it be better to downgrade to Lion, if that's even possible?
