Re: [QUAD-L] sweating profusely when laying on my side at night
A lot of this sounds way too familiar for me. I would be thinking hip bones/heads of your femur pressure points or less likely your ischeal (butt) bone. You may want to have it checked out now because if it's started something inside that's yet to show itself, there may be something that can be done before more damage is caused.. Not trying to scare you but this all sounds way too familiar… Jeff On Friday, January 12, 2024 at 09:52:44 AM PST, Eric Olson wrote: Wish I could help. [QUAD-L] sweating profusely when laying on my side at night
Hi all. I'm a C5 quad since a diving accident in August 1987 when I was 23. I just turned 60, am(was) 5'10" and I weigh 182 lbs, down from 205 lbs this time last year. Amazingly enough I have used the same bowel program since leaving the hospital in 1988. Every other night I lay on my left side then use a suppository (Magic Bullet by Concepts in Confidence) the following morning. Most mornings my program is finished in 2 hours, sometimes 2.5. Yes, I have been very lucky in that regard. The following night I lay on my right side. In other words, I empty my bowels every 48 hours. Also, I usually spend about 8 hours on my side each night. The last four nights I have started sweating profusely in the middle of the night. The sweating is usually limited to my neck, shoulder, side, and arm but only on the side that I'm not laying on. So when I'm laying on my left side, my right side sweats, then the following night while laying on my right side, I sweat on the left side. I have no sensation from the mid-shoulder down, but strangely enough I do feel the sweating. Re: pressure sores, occasionally I do have superficial pressure sores at the ischial tuberosity location, but nothing serious since 2004-2005 when I had a bad one that required surgery and sidelined me for almost 2 years. Since 2004 I have slept on an Invacare air mattress, and for the past 5 years it's been the Invacare MA600 system. Today my butt (and sides, hips, knees) looks good, and at 60 I don't spend a lot of time in my chair for fear of developing a pressure sore. My caregiver has been with me the entire time and knows as much about decubitus ulcers as I do. The sweating does not appear to be caused by pressure on my skin. Of course it could be something under the skin but I don't know. Another problem I have dealt with for the past 30+ years is kidney stones. Kidney stones have their own set of warning signs but sweating has never been one of them for me. I mention this because it's possible I do have kidney stones as I pretty much live with them all the time. Several times over the years I have had lithotripsy to remove large stubborn kidney stones that caused persistent UTIs, but it's not surprising for me to pass several kidney stones, sometimes quite large, over the course of a few weeks and I can usually tell when it's about to happen. Headaches, chills, and muscle spasms in certain areas of my side and lower back, almost always accompany kidney stones, and I am not experiencing any of these at the moment. No UTI symptoms at the moment either. So, my question is what could be causing these cold clammy sweats? Have any of you old timers experienced this and figured it out? Is it always a pressure situation? I do remember sweating profusely on my head and face whenever I was up in my chair right before finding the bad open pressure sore on my butt back in 2004, But back then neither of us knew what a pressure sore was so we didn't know to look for something like that. We do now but again my caregiver sees no evidence of pressure on my skin anywhere. Any suggestions or help would be very much appreciated. Thanks to all of you who contribute here on the quad-list, and especially Jim Lubin for providing us with this forum all these years. Best, Greg

It's so weird, but for me when I get cold I sweat, maybe it's because I bundle up, but the thing is, I'm still cold and I'm sweating, it's the most uncomfortable thing! Then my sweat gets cold and that makes it worse. I hate the cold weather. Lissette Whitehead 416 W. Re: [QUAD-L] sweating
I have been getting some sweating and like mild dysreflexia on and off a bit latelybut no gas. I think mine could be uti or shoulder related--my shoulders started hurting bad about nov. 1st. and the right side hurts really bad, I have been a Quad over 23 years now, so perhaps my shoulders could be getting worn out or bone on bone as some quads say can happen. Re: [QUAD-L] sweating ?
I've noticed over the years that I get a 'head pressure' associated with sweat causing pains. The pressure is slightly different sometimes, which points at certain issues. Primary pains are back, catheter and butt wound. Each has very slightly different head/sweat inducing effects. [QUAD-L] Sweating
I'm been having the sweating issue for almost 2 months now, but mine is sweating whenever i sit up in my chair. though i found the cause. I had a sore growing under the skin on my butt. It tunneled and broke open. I was put on 2 IV antibiotics, but last night I had to call 911. I was so dizzy, BP was 62/50. The meds gave me such a stomachache I wasn't drinking. Got dehydrated. One of the IVs they need to check blood levels for kidneys, mine was way too high, was toxic. I have to stop for a few days. But they are going to put me on a IV just for extra fluids. I'm going to see if I can do that monthly after too. I've called 911, 4 or 5 times now for dehydration. I'm always sitting outside in AZ. And just don't drink enough. Greg

You would think after 36 years as a quad, my family would understand, when I sweat, I'M NOT OVERHEATED! I keep sweating and they keep saying, "Its probably too hot outside." I keep saying "Its not that kind of sweating." Oh well, they mean well. Greg
[QUAD-L] Sweating
I am going crazy sweating on the back of my neck. First I thought is was because of a small sore on my butt. But its not. Then I thought UTI, but no. It seems to be my colostomy, but only when I'm going while sitting up. Reclining stops it. I've had it for years now, never caused an issue. From liquid to rock, never caused sweating. I guess its time to see someone about it. Everything is working fine, but sweating while going. Anyone ever have this issue? Thx Greg

I've checked everything. Even though my butt wound is small, more like a skin sheer, just the skin rubbed off a tiny spot. I've been seeing a wound doc just in-case it was the cause. He doesn't think so, even when he pokes and prods I don't sweat. Bladder makes me sweat more than anything, but no UTI. I don't think a draining issue, because I can sweat just seconds after sitting up. Sometimes hours after, it comes and goes. Thinking bowel, but everything is moving fine. I am having a lot of gas, that can be painful. But when ever I sweat a lot, it seems to cause some gas. My Uro says uti's, etc can cause abdomen area spasms and that can cause gas. The back of my neck is just wet today. Driving me nuts. Can't get into my Uro until the 25th. He just left on vacation. But if not better soon, I'll see if I can see someone else. Greg

I've had that granulation tissue trimmed back a couple times. It's usually not a problem other than causing some bleeding with catheter changes. I've had problems in the past with my bladder not draining simply because, when you sit up the distance between the catheter stoma and leg strap gets shorter, causing the catheter to bend in funky ways. Just moving the leg strap farther down towards my knee usually solves the problem. Just a thought On Mon, Mar 4, 2019 at 2:16 PM Randy Anderson wrote: > Hello > I'm 21 years post with a SP site. Re: [QUAD-L] Sweating
Hello I'm 21 years post with a SP site. I also have had a protrusion around the catheter for quite a few years. We call it the "proud flesh" or "the meat". I believe the sticks you referred to have silver nitrate on them and uses a chemical reaction to cauterize the proud flesh. In the past I've never had much luck with it. I've had better luck when one of my other urologists use to burn it off (imagine a wood-burning set) but it's never stayed away completely. Mine will believe periodically and usually it's at the proud flesh site. As for the sweating, I certainly wouldn't rule out skin issues or anything else but for me I'm guessing that your urine is backing up and when you lay back the obstruction shifts and allows the urine to flow again. When you sit back up you feel better because the bladder is empty. Sometimes the obstruction can be a kink in the tubing or catheter. Sometimes it can be sediment or "floaty pieces" of skin/bladder lining in the urine. When you lay back sometimes this takes care of the problem and sometimes it doesn't and the bladder fills up again, and you need to repeat the reclining again and so on. Whatever the obstruction is it may not be blocking the flow of urine completely but slowing it to the point where it takes quite a while before it fills the bladder to the point that it irritates you to the point of dysreflexia. But again, don't rule out what the other causes may be. Randy On Mon, Mar 4, 2019 at 11:57 AM Eric Olson wrote: > Hmm...sweating is never a good sign for me anyway. Hmm...sweating is never a good sign for me anyway. Best to check the usual suspects. Since it gets worse when you sit up, could it be another butt sore that hasn't yet broken through the surface? I am just sweating when I sit up. I recline and it goes away. But can't find the cause. No UTI, my butt sore, very tiny, has healed up fine. My cushion is fine. Crotch is fine. The only thing I can think of is my SP Cath, the skin around it is "prouding". Where the skin kind of flares back. We use these sticks that cauterizes the skin. But thats never caused this sweating before. I'm trying to get back in to my Uro to get my bladder scoped. Its beet awhile, might as well check for issues in the bladder too. Frustrating... Greg

I had severe problems with this. It turned out to be a particularly bad kidney stone that doctors are not picked up on from x-rays. After surgery to remove it, I didn't have any more problems. Hello Larry Do you by chance use a CPAP. I've had trouble with stomachaches and a bloated belly. I think it may be from the CPAP. If I sleep without it I seem to do better. I sleep with it on 7, which is in very high. I would like to turn it down to 6 that they want me to go to a sleep clinic again first. Hi Wheelchair, That is so true that sweating is usually a warning signal of a UTI or some kind of skin pressure that is happening to your body that you don't know about. I always check about UTI. Re: [QUAD-L] Sweating
When I was first injured I would sweat whenever I was sitting in my chair. No matter what I sat on or what position I was in ...I just sweat EVERY SINGLE DAY for closet 15 years. I sat in a manual chair for the first 4 1/2 years then started using a power chair - didn't matter I still sweat, it didn't matter hat time of year and I live in New Jersey. I went to college, dated I did everything and anything sweating, I figured I was going to sweat anyway so what the hell. Then I started getting VERY BAD leg spazams AND sweating. The spazams use to throw me out of my chair. I was checked out by every Doctor imaginable. Finally, I had a ryzodomy, which is a surgical procedure where a neurologist cuts the nerves in your back which stops the spazams. In my case,it happened to stop the sweating as well. When I told the Doctor that I don't sweat anymore he said " ... Consider it a bonus." He couldn't explain it. EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT!! Re: [QUAD-L] Sweating
Just re-read your original questions, Hosni, so some additional answers... The times when sweating started sometime after I sat in my wheelchair were: - Worst when I had a sore on my butt that went to stage 4, because my helper didn't see it for 2 weeks. - Common (like almost every day), right when I first get in the chair in the morning, because of my hemorrhoids (and even with Preparation-H) ...but it usually subsides after 30 minutes or so. - When my seat cushion (J2 gel) is on wrong (backwards, or just too far forward or back) - I've banged my knee or a foot has fallen off my footrest. So, my recommendation would be for someone to give a close look over your skin for red areas after you've started sweating. Re: [QUAD-L] Sweating
I sweat because of Autonomic-Dysreflexia (AD) when I'm in pain somewhere in the insensate part(s) of my body. I only sweat from my head, in different parts, depending where on my body the pain is. If my lower extremities, the sweating is on the opposite side of my head. The intensity of the sweat is directly related to the level of pain. Most of my head will be red in color, except the sweaty parts, which go pale white (yes, it's a sight!). I can soak a towel in under a minute when it's real bad. I always have small towels handy, including a spare in my van. My body temp usually stays at my normal 98.1F when I sweat. I do not sweat at all if/when my body (core) gets hot (without pain). Sometimes, when it's chilly, my sweating can bring my temp down enough to make me cold and shivering ...which is when i seek a radiant heat source. For me, sitting in the sun can help if the sweating is mild. If it's intense, I find that a little marajuana can make a huge difference. It doesn't stem it forever, but can stop it outright for a good while. MJ is almost legal in Massachusetts (a ticket noone pays for having under 1oz), and they're gearing-up to open medical MJ dispensaries (it was voted-in last fall). I already started asking my primary care phys for a "recommendation" in February. Re: [QUAD-L] Sweating Issues
Oh Greg, sounds just like my last sweating episode this fall. I have a corn on my toe and when I put padded cushions on my commode chair it stopped. BUT, I also had 6 acupuncture treatments AND I PUT AIR IN MY CUSHION AT THE SAME TIME,. so GO FIGURE, IT IS THE SCREWIEST THING AND NOBODY BUT US QUADS CAN UNDERSTAND. SORRY ABOUT THE CAP LOCK ON, SIGH have a great Thanksgiving everyone! I finely tried using my other cushion though it's the same Quatro Roho. I have been fine for 2 days (knock on wood). No idea why it's different. They both have the same amount of air in them. Tried locked and unlocked. I used that cushion for a long time with no issues. I would have sworn it was an internal issue, or SP issue. I had lots of abdomen pain, abdomen spasming. But any time I have AD it causes lots of gas, so that was the pain. I hope it stays ok, Greg

Hey Greg. Man I am glad you found the cause of your sweating, even if you don't understand it. I think a lot of quad crap is beyond understanding. I do know from extensive experience that cold sweat is a gift from hell. Good luck, my friend, and keep us informed. Re: [QUAD-L] Sweating
It is "sweating" caused by AD. "The most common symptoms of autonomic dysreflexia are sweating, pounding headache, tingling sensation on the face and neck, blotchy skin around the neck and goose bumps. Not all the symptoms always appear at once, and their severity may vary. In untreated and extreme cases of autonomic dysreflexia, it can lead to a stroke and death." Hi Bobbie, I just got this email after I sent mine and asked about cutting the sweat gland. MY neurosurgeon said it was dangerous. Can you tell us more about what happened and your recovery after. RE: [QUAD-L] Sweating
I had to look up the Ryzodomy procedure because the only one I was familiar was the procedure used on cerebral palsy. Is that what you had? I also had severe sweating and quite a few spasms for the first 12 to 14 years, and an often had AD over very little. Luckily for me, my spasms have been reduced to minimum and that is usually when I hit a bump while driving and I never have the severe sweating anymore, and only have AD when my cath tube is pinched, or I happen to cut myself usually on my arms driving around the trees in the garden. And sometimes not even then, because one of the grandchildren will say Grams you’re bleeding again! Then I look down and see blood pooled in the arm rest of my chair, not my favorite thing. Joan

Re: [QUAD-L] Sweating
Sweating is always a symptom of pain for me, bowel, bladder/kidney, sores. I never sweat when hot, nor when going through menopause. I usually try to rule out every possible cause of pain, one thing at a time. Btw ... I sleep on my stomach. On the rare occasion that I lay on my back for any length of time, I sweat. Just my experience. Re: [QUAD-L] SWEATING ONLY OR MAINLY IN CHAIR
I don't have a bladder problem. i've been a quad for 33 years and my bones are similar to chalk but the nerves feel obligated to send pain signals to my spine where it biuilds up untill it is feeding the excess impulses into the autonomic nervous system where it interupts with the autonomic system causing my organs and glandular system to freak out. Any thing you can imagine having done without thinking of doing it, you can still do because the autonomic system controls it. those moments when you feel fright or fear and theres no reason. AD just sent a signal that released a hormone from a gland that no longer gets impulses from your brain. The upper part of your spine seems to get the electro chemical signal to you sympathetic, or Autonomic nervous system in some manor that has only been recently understood. This excess signal from pain that was on its way to the brain to say ouch is now flooding your Autonomic system as and causing spasms, mood swings, profuse sweating, rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, dry mouth, convulsions,m etc A painful UTI will cause the sweating as you said. I Think we can sweat from any pain caused from low back fractures. or even a broken toe. Lyrica and neurontin and cymbalta are designed to interupt communication between the central nervous system and the Autonomic nervous system. I'm not dissin your theory. I'm just saying that I broke so many bones and did so much internal damage along with breaking my neck that figuring out whats causing it has taken back seat to stoping it. i'm argueing with a doctor now about a high diabetes test. It was done while was in pain and when I stopped thge pain my sugar level returned to normal when I took the Lyrica. I've checked it with my new meter and its normal. The office test showed 470. Out of pain its 85-92. It isn't on any definition of AD. He isnt that sure of my insistance in the hormone release can cause a pancreatic malfuntion. I'm curious about anyone else testing sugar while in pain? It causes everything else to malfunction. I got a free glucose meter now. Re: [QUAD-L] SWEATING ONLY OR MAINLY IN CHAIR
John you are so right. The same thing happened to me, twice. The first time I had a uti and the er doc had me take Keflex which I'm allergic to. After I told him that he said ok we'll give you something stronger by iv - that something was Keflex! I asked what was going on. He said most people are only allergic to a drug orally. "You'll be fine". I could feel my body swelling and no urine in my bag. I told him this and he says - that's because you have a uti!?! After the iv was empty, I said ok I'm leaving. The second time the er doc said I had a uti that had gone septic. They admitted me and started iv antibiotics. Doc said I would be in the hospital 4 or 5 days. I felt fine so I said I'll give you 2 days. After the second day he said I was doing much better but I should stay a couple of more days. I said no thank you so against RTAMA, I went home. My rule of thumb is, if I start to feel worse the longer I stay in a hospital, that means I'll do better at home. The last time I was in the hospital I didn't follow my rule of thumb. I went in for an adjustment of my vent. I was released 5 days later weak as a kitten. I hardly ate the whole time and lost half my body weight. On the day I was to be released the intern came in and said I would have to stay longer because they found something strange in my blood - like I had ingested antifreeze. What the Hell was she talking about?! Then when rounds came along she told the resident that they found Ketones in my blood - Ketones for Gods sake. Was she an idiot? I hadn't eaten for 5 days and she couldn't figure that one out?!? I looked at the resident and he explained to her why I had Ketones in my blood/urine. I left that day. But I learned a valuable lesson - never trust the docs - always question why and then make up your own mind. Dan At 06:49 PM 9/1/2009, John S. said something that elicited my response: In the 80's I had an indwelling catheter and took antibiotics daily to prevent infections. I was taking macrodantin. After about 7 months I was having trouble breathing and i was not producing any urine. Ambulance took me to the hospital were they increased the macrodantin by IV and began treating me for heart failure. I asked to see the PDR and a nurse complied. the side effects were identical to what was happening to me. I had them remove the IV medicine packs and refused any more antibiotics. Within 6 hours I was urinating big time. 2 liters in 4 hours. Within a day my heart had returned to normal and my breathing was incredibly easier. You can become septic from antibiotics that are taken over long periods of time. It is important to understand how each works and drugs that can turn to poison when your system no longer removes them. I ditched that urologist and went to a different one who got me into bladder training. It may never happen to others, but I wanted to relate the importance of being able to recognize antibiotic poisoning and toxic reactions. I'm allergic to any drug in the macrodantin and keflex families. My point is obvious I guess. just always get the pharmacy PDR info on any drug and e careful. I was within hours of dying when I started to refuse treatment against medical advice (RTAMA) from a doctor that was furious with me and insisting that I needed an even larger dose of what was killing me. The next day a resident came in my room and told me my stubbornness kept me from the morgue. I honestly feel that many of us using CMS medical treatment are not getting the treatment given to those with beefy insurance policies. I hope this changes but I will always read the fine print as should we all. If I had died it would have been listed as heart attack due to Renal failure. I always wonder how many of us die from the treatment we get from people we trusted to "do no harm". Ultimately, it is up to each of us to read and ask questions about our health care and use our judgment. Doctors aren't gods and mistakes happen all to often. I hope what you take works for you as long as you need it. I don't mean to scare or frieghten you or any one else. I just want to relate an experience I had because I did everything my doctor said without question. KNOW YOUR ENEMA! Re: [QUAD-L] SWEATING ONLY OR MAINLY IN CHAIR
In the 80's I had an indwelling catheter and took antibiotics daily to prevent infections. RE: [QUAD-L] Sweating in the chair
Hi Everyone! I had this sweating problem but couldn't take Lyrica *because of* the Neurontin I was taking. The doc (a quad himself) prescribed Cymbalta instead. It worked great! One problem I developed was that after a while I started getting extremely sleepy around 6-7:00pm everyday no matter when I took the Cymbalta. I mean like "scary sleepy!" asleep in my chair watching TV during dinner with my wife and mother-in-law (YES, I KNOW there's a joke in there... it's just too easy! Ha!). We had to stay an extra 2 hrs until we were sure I was awake enough to drive home (Another joke coming... I'm holding back). I decided to slowly get myself off it. Luckily, the sweating problem has continued to stay away ever since! That was a year ago! I still have to take 200mg ibuprofen each morning or it comes back after a couple days. If you're sweating ONLY when you sit, I might suggest 1) a bone density scan and 2) checking lower lumbar and sacral vertabrae for compression fractures and other tiny cracks/breaks. I don't know about the rest of you, but I DO know the reason I was sweating... I did have a compression fracture in one of my lower lumbar vertabrae and a sacral one. It was from thinning bones and repeated trauma from transfers to/from my chair. I had a procedure done called "sacroplasty" where they use a CT Scan to find the compression points and inject a fast-hardening cement into the bones to "spread them" a little (lack of a better term) and then stabilize them once they're apart. I was sweating before that and for a while after the procedure... perhaps it was because it took a while for all the nearby inflammation to settle down. Nobody ever was sure why it stopped. That was the best thing anyone could ever determine/guess. Having to continue with ibuprofen seems to back that idea up. Best wishes to All! Yes, hips are toast with osified (sp) bone. Spine has spurs that are jutting out into both nerves and muscle. I haven't tossed out the narcotics as I'm pretty addicted. I have not stopped the pain but its no longer triggering the AD. I don't know if it will last but I'm enjoying it while I can.
