radikon, Have you tried contacting WD about accessing the power management settings on the HD itself? Seems that is where the problem likely resides. As for using a laptop with SB players, something just can't be correct with your setup. Like you I use a laptop to run SBS, remove laptop for biz trips, when back home my SB players connect right to that instance of SBS without issue. I've never had to reinstall SBS just to get players connected to SBS. That said, there are two differences in your setup vs my setup which may be contributing factors to your issues: - I don't own a Duet, you do - I have only one router, you have multiple routers -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78256 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] I am getting totally fed up!
I thought I was technically challenged as I now enter my third year non-stop effort of debugging (er testing) this duet controller/slim devices/squeezebox server/player prototype for Logitech. Now I see that a veteran IT professional doesnt get it either! Albeit his issues are with the radio portion, I too am flabbergasted that Logitech deemed this a consumer hardened product .its great for techies who get their skirts blown up by figuring out how to make something with multiple failure opportunities function, but robust it is not. Im not a newbie at home network stuff as Ive set up print servers, have two wireless routers in my home daisy chained, 3 computers networked on them, etc. All that stuff works great. Given that and the fact the folks like JonInAtl have issues too suggests that indeed the product is lame. If you planned to actually have a hassle free way of listening to music with this beast beware! Dont get me wrong; Ive had my system working and working well for time periods of maybe up to a month or so. Then something happens and nothing works .the little circle spins around for ever on the controller .never telling me what its looking for or what it cant do; libraries that are mysteriously no longer configured in the Information tab of the Squeezebox Server GUI; libraries that wont even scan anymore unless the server software is re-installed; cant connect to server messages; batteries that wouldnt hold a charge longer than 10 mins (yes, Logitech sent me a new one after contacting them but why was it ever an issue to begin with?); cant access library, cant, cant, cant or wont, wont, wont. And forget the wireless setup to the player; employing an Ethernet cable thru my attic 2 years ago fixed a lot of stuff and allowed the new vista of problems to fully blossom. My setup? A Dell M4400 laptop as my server (I had a Dell 1150 before with the same problem set I have now) with 250 Gb (flac mp3) of music stored on an external Western Digital Mybook 500 Gb hard drive connected via USB 2.0. I run Windows XP; the Duet has software version 7.5.0 r8673; the SBS software is v 7.5.0 r30464. No, I cant believe its a software level issue Ive been thru multiple software upgrades usually they only make things worse. Connection of the router to the player is via Ethernet as is connection of the laptop to the router. Yes, the Mybook has a script built into it that shuts it down after a certain amount of time. Yes, I think this is my current problem because squeeze box server cant wake it up. Sometimes even Windows Explorer cant wake it up but usually it can. No, I dont know how to prevent the MyBook from powering down. No, you cant manage the power down via the Power Options in Widows XP that is already set to Never turn off hard disks. No, I dont want to put all my music on the internal drive of the laptop because of space limitations. Yes, I leave my laptop powered on all the time when its at home (because of Squeezebox). Yes, I occasionally unplug my laptop from the external drive and take it somewhere .its a laptop. Yes, the external drive appears to map back to the original drive letter E when I plug the laptop back into my home peripherals. I can always get things working again by either running the factory setup on the Duet and/or by reinstalling the server software and rescanning .about a 30 minute procedure but thats a lot to do when you just want to chill to some tunes after coming home; shuffling CDs around is easier or plugging in my MP3 player. Yes, Im fond of semi-colons. If anyone has any tips on this situation Id be very appreciative of your help. Ill even commit Logitech to compensating you for your time. Best wishes Thanks to JonInAtl and the thousands of other frustrated users in recognition of their millions of un-compensated, GDP draining man-hours spent on this product. -- radikon radikon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=31547 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78256 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

I wasn't looking for an extended family when I bought my first Duet, but the darn thing almost drove me crazy for a while. And then I got into all the plug-ins and on and on. I ended up with a bunch of SB's right up to the Transporter and really love em all, but once I got it working, including the SBC as a player, then I quit the game. I was interested in the Radio because it was something I thought would be useful long before it came out. However I resisted because I was happy running on 7.3 and didn't want to ruin my care free experience. Recently a friend expressed interest in the radio. He is not techinical at all and doesn't want to be. So I thought it might be a good time to try the Radio hooked up to a seperate server running the latest Squeeze Server software. The Radio seems to work fine after ones nights use (except the darn auto-brightness feature), but I would never reccommend it to anyone other than a techie or someone with time on their hands and no where to be in the morning when the alarm fails :-)(It is a stated feature and should work. The car analogy is very valid). For my purpose, it will be fine. I want something quick and easy to take outside that I don't have to plug in. Of course as it is I still have to plug it in because Logitech will never be any better at planning than they are at designing. They remind me of Nikon and anyone who shoots knows exactly what I'm saying. One surprise was statically addressing the Radio. I thought when the Boom came out that Logitech had actually learned a lesson from the SBR, but that isn't the case. Once again statically adddressing the device is a pain in the patooey for those of us who don't use DHCP. Thank the gods for Christian Erpelding and his SqueezeConfig software that runs on my Droid. Makes things a bit easier. Logitech should be so helpful. So, all in all I guess Logitech sold one more Radio, but not two or three or however many people ask me about the little box sitting on my table outside playing it's little heart out. Or I may decide running two servers to be silly and send it back. Either way I guess I'll be watching this forum for a little while and then after everything works well again I'll go back in to my happy music listening bliss. Because some people might not know that there is a very reliable alternative. I don't want to defend Logitech for promising/advertising that it all works reliable without your own server. But just lets be pragmatic (from a user point of view) - what are your options when you can't give back the device ? 1) demand from logitech to fix it and wait until you're blue in your mind 2) sell it on ebay 3) make it working because most of the problems are not in the firmware but because of this damn unreliable mysb.com server. Since it is what it is...using the server software is the best, temporary, most reliable fix. -- brucegrr brucegrr's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3964 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78256 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio
Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] I am getting totally fed up!
Just a statement of fact. Your options are few. Sell the radio. Shelf the radio. Or live with it as it is until it is fixed. The forums are overrun with bitc*ing users upset with their radio. I am quite willing to grant that their problems are legitimate. That said, the bitc*ing fixes nothing. I, for one, get tired of reading it. Running the server software will likely fix the problem. Some users don't want to do it. Fine. But, constantly complaining and griping about it is not going to change anything. Personally, I find this forum much less friendly and enjoyable these days. I try and help the users I can. But, no one is going to post a magical fix for the problems people are having with the radio. Logitech has to do that. I have no doubt they are working on it. Those having a problem are just doing to have to wait until it is fixed. Tough luck to be sure..but that's just how it is. This little device called SheevaPlug mentioned somewhere else in this forum (which has got very good support by the community here) doesn't have any noise (no fans), doesn't consume much energy (3W on idle) and has the best WAF I know of (its a plug, its sort of invisible - what could have a better woman acceptance factor than invisible stuff?). In the meantime my wifes even enjoys listening to Squeezeboxes (she of course (!) complained a lot about the Logi-Stuff I bought). THAT's what I call WAF. I converted this plug also to being my new printserver - so I'm even saving energy because I don't have to turn on the 'big' computer just to print. It also acts as my NAS - and again I don't have to turn on my big computer if I need access to some files from my laptop. And I even safed money compared to other solutions. So yes - maybe you didn't want to spend 150$ more (SheevaPlug + HD). I agree. But money is the only reason I accept for not having a 24x7 server that could suit your needs in so many other good ways. It might even take you one more weekend to set up. But than again - your life will be at least a year longer if you just do it and stop pushing your anger about logitech. Life's just not worth it. And logitech for sure doesn't deserve shortening your life. We get ripped off by big companies and their adverts all the time. But at least with the Logi-devices I was able to help myself. All this of course shouldn't prevent you from giving bad amazon reviews, write letters to review magazines and all that. Take your anger and use the channels that matters to higher management ! But I think this forum is the least place where you should place your complaints in my opinion. Here we talk about workarounds and try to help to make the best of what we bought. Here we are happy that people like erland put their life into giving us all the stuff logitech isn't capable of (hope they as well push his donate button regularly). And for alarms: I think hoping that it will ever work with MySB.com is too much. Apparently with their current architecture (communicating with mysb.com at alarm time) all their sold devices run a coordinated DenialOfService-Attack against their own servers. Each day. Hell, this is so annoying. Why can't certain Squeezebox fans stop to spam every thread that names the blatant bugs with their we know better what you want attitude? And heck, if Logitech ignores all the unhappy users and doesn't show any interest in fixing the issues for such a long time, it's not very surprising that customers use the forum to utter their frustration. Telling them that they don't have a problem or that they should shut up is not a very sensible approach. Finally fixing the issues after all these months would effectively stop people from complaining though. You would think that the Logitech management finally realizes that the number of complaints in the forum and in Amazon reviews simply reflects the situation. And honestly, demanding to move all these threads to a faraway complaints forum that can be easily ignored is a slap in the face of everybody who bought a SB Radio because he believed in Logitech's promises. -- 0xdeadbeef 0xdeadbeef's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2287 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78256 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] I am getting totally fed up!
For people on this thread who refused to participate in bugzilla process (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=16170) and thereby be kept up-to-date, this is the latest up-date from the Logitechs: Alan Young 2010-05-25 01:23:14 PDT Here is a status report for those monitoring this bug: When 7.5.0 was released there was both new firmware for Squeezebox Radio and new software on mysqueezebox.com. People started reporting that their SB Radios stopped playing and many attributed this to problems to the 7.5.0 firmware. It seems highly likely that the actual cause was a bug introduced in to the mysqueezebox.com software. This bug was fixed on 17 May. Since then, behaviour should have reverted to that of 7.4.2. This is the key message in this comment. In the process of analysing the problems, we uncovered a number of vulnerabilities in the interactions between a player and mysqueezebox.com which could, under some circumstances, cause playback to stop unnecessarily. The SB Radio (and other SP-based players including the SB Touch) is slightly more likely to be affected by these than are older players (Classic, Boom, Duet, etc.) because of small differences in timings used by the firmware. We also uncovered a couple of related bugs in the SP firmware. None of these are changes between 7.4.2 and 7.5.0. Testing is currently under way for changes to both mysqueezebox.com and the firmware used for Radio and Touch to fix the identified bugs and substantially reduce the vulnerabilities. These fixes will be included in 7.5.1 and should represent an enhancement over 7.4.2 in this area. -- mpower9 mpower9's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33930 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78256 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

The physical size and advertising clearly results in that many people are going to use the Radio in the bedroom and when used in the bedroom a reliable alarm is maybe the most important feature. However, I think the most critical bug is MySB reliability and the randomly stopped audio streams when using MySB. You are correct that it works better with a local PC/server but I really believe Logitech has designed it to work better with MySB.com. One example is that during the beta tests we had a lot of discussions regarding the initial setup process and it was very clear that Logitech wanted it to be optimized for users without a local PC/server with the result that it doesn't work as good as it could for people with a local server. Logitech is very dedicated to make sure MySB works, in many cases I think it's a lot more important for them than making sure your local server works. However, at the moment it's clear that they have failed in their intentions regarding this because at the moment it works better with a local server. iPhone;550598 Wrote: For again, there are other people and technologies involved that are nowhere near fault proof. So look at what is really involved and stop calling a Squeezebox on mysb.com an alarm clock for it is NOT! To many things can go wrong to cause an alarm not to sound. That's not the fault of MySB, it's the alarm functionality that's designed incorrectly mainly due to inheritance from the older Squeezebox products. It would be possible to make the alarm functionality less dependent on MySB or even not dependent on a server/MySB at all, it's just a matter of changing the alarm handling logic. iPhone;550598 Wrote: And nobody give me that Energy/Environmentalist crap about leaving a Mac Mini/DIY Atom/Fit-PC2 on all the time when it uses only 6 to 23 watts (SheevaPlug 3W). As I've said before, fixing bugs shouldn't be like a democracy - the radio does NOT work as advertised. I have called Logitech support on numerous occasions. They have blamed everything on my end and have not acknowledged any issues with the SBR. Funny though, all my other internet devices work fine. If MySB is the problem then they need to fix it and let their customers know there is an issue they are working on instead of burying their heads in the sand. Logitech DOES NOT CARE about their SBR customers. Period. Generally, actions speak louder than words but in this case we aren't even getting the words. Thank god today was a holiday because the alarm didn't fire AT ALL. My wife is so fed up with the gift (I was the dummy who bought it) that we are going back to old reliable - a $15 clock radio that reliably plays both AM and FM reliably. From a customer's perspective it's hard to tell which parts of the current issues are caused by bad system design, bad software implementation on the radio and bad server setup. Probably an unhealthy mixture of all three points. Then again, as a customer I don't have to care: the Radio is advertised to work without a local server and in the 6 or 7 months I owned it, it hardly ever did. brucegrr;550230 Wrote: I guess what I am trying to figure out is this a matter of a lot of different issues or one main culprit (mysb.com) causing the majority of the problems radio users are having. The problem we're having is one of bad management, too few people with too little experience working on too many different projects and failing completely. It's not like the issues started with the 7.5.0 update. Most of the issues exist since the release of the Radio and they were already reported back then. In 6 months, it should be possible to hire some people who are actually capable of fixing the design/implementation/setup issues. Instead they decided to tinker with them alongside the Touch development. Bad decision. brucegrr;550230 Wrote: Filing bug reports would be crucial at this point. Usually bugs are defined as solved without solving them or they are made duplicates of (more or less) unrelated bugs and then closed etc. Every now and then I still get some automatic feedback on some bugs I filed years ago for the SB classic, but since my original report was merged/marked as duplicate, it's usually hard to tell what the heck this message has to do with my original report. Usually nothing. All the reports I filed last year for the Radio were closed/merged/ignored as well, so why do you think that filing new bug reports over and over again would change the minds of the Logitech folks who obviously decided to simply ignore all the known and obvious issues with the Radio? -- 0xdeadbeef 0xdeadbeef's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2287 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78256 ___ Radio mailing list Radio@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/radio

Thanks for sharing your experience/viewpoint. I don't own a radio. I have had thoughts of buying one/two but these ongoing problems have scared me off. My classic and boom are rock solid...rarely a problem. The boom is our clock and alarm and it has never missed. Consumers should be able to expect products to work as advertised. I solved my alarm, connection, and totally random player stopping problems in one fell swoop! I replaced my SBR with a Reciva based radio from Grace Digital. The alarm works EVERY morning! Player streams consistently every night until the sleep timer shuts it off. No, it doesn't have the same look or feel of the SBR, but it's 100% USABLE and that, in my opinion, trumps all else. As for the SBR... it's on my desk in at work where I don't have to relay on it for anything, like, you know, waking me up. Yes I did get the update. The radio just sits there at the spinning wheel animation trying to access anything at MSB. Favorites-wheel Internet Radio-Local-wheel Apps-wheel It will only work if I A. Re-boot it, but then it only works for 10 min or so B. Press a preset button- it goes to the preset but accessing anything on MSB from the home screen results in the animation running forever. C. Run SBS and connect through that. However that is not an option as I bought the radio so I didn't have to have the computer running all the time.
