[RBW] Re: Soliciting your opinions on a tentative A Homer Hilsen build
I love forums where I can ask for 'whatever you think' and actually get it! If it sounds like I'm arguing/disagreeing with anyone, that's not the idea, just using your thoughts to fine tune my own (and it has helped!) Joel - I've always heard good things about the Simplex shifters. While I wouldn't say they look better (to me) than the Silvers from what I've seen in pictures, they do look good. I've already got a pair of Silvers on the Bombadil so I think I'll take the advice and at least keep an eye out for a nice set on eBay, might as well make the comparison for myself, eh? White Industry BB is definitely a consideration. I'm not sure what length I'll be looking for as that seems to be one number that isn't mentioned in the blog posts about the Grand Cru crank. I'm with you on the braze-ons and if you ask the question, let us know what the response is! Though even with braze-ons I might still stick with the original Racers rather than the Ms just to keep my big fat tire options as open as possible. The center mounted brakes are probably the single thing that isn't essentially perfect about the AHH to me. The first picture I found of the Colt was a rear quarter view and didn't do anything for me, but the I found more shots from better angles and that is definitely being added to the list under consideration! The 12-36 cassette and the Noodle bar are at the top of the list for now, thanks for the input. I've always liked Tubus racks and the Fly would probably be a little more functional than a Mini/Mark's rack mounted on the back, but more than likely I'll be using the Nitto Mini off the front of my Bombadil for this build and putting something a little more substantial in its place for self-supported touring. My only concern with the White (or MKS) platform pedals is the lack of ability to vary the position of my foot on the pedal over a long ride. Thus the idea of buying the cheaper MKS and then upgrading if it works out well. Patrick - I'm not familiar with the 185, from the couple of pictures I see it looks like a Noodle without the forward sweep, would that be a fair description? If I go with Jack Browns it will probably be greens as you say. When I put the blues on my list I was still thinking more in the Bombadil/Big Dummy mode where durablbility is a bigger concern. As for the peddles and saddle, to each their own! Actually I've gotten into cycling as an adult very much under the influence of Riv and the leather saddles and platform pedals work for me, so I've actually never used a Selle Italia or done so much as a mile with clipless pedals. I'm sure both are excellent. =) Michael - I would be happy to have a bike without a single Shimano part on it (the rear derailleur is the only one on the Bombadil,) but I don't have strong enough feelings against them to run contrary to Grant's suggestions and Riv's stock on parts where I don't have my own strong feelings. I've got a B-17 on the Bombdadil and I'm happy with that, just thinking that something sleeker would suit the look of the AHH a little better. As for 8 speeds vs 9, I have no dog in the fight... I've got 7 on the Bombadil with the Rivvy hub and that's been enough. It's just that the range of those two cassettes sounds very nice, especially if I'm going to be running just two rings up front. William - You're probably right about 32 spokes being sufficient on what will essentially be a road bike (though it will see some trails.) Part of the reason I'm tending toward overbuilding is that I want 36 spokes on my Big Dummy wheels and can't (without custom drillling) because the Rohloff hub doesn't come that way. I will also keep the short cage suggestion in mind and see what Riv thinks on that point. Ryan - There you go making my Noodle/Rando decision harder again. =) The Grand Cru post looks like it doesn't give up a thing to the Nitto pieces and that's probably a good place to save a few pennies without giving up anything in either the style or function department. The FSA FD looks like a good option, I'll have to make some inquiries about what might fit best. Thanks again all, and any more thoughts are more than welcome. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Soggy, slimy grips
When I first got my Bombadil this past winter it had cloth twine over cork tape on the ends of the Bullmoose bars. I left the grips un- shellac'ed partly because I was lazy about picking up the shellac and partly because I wanted to be sure I was happy with the setup before making it a bit more of a project to change anything about the bars. Well, I am happy with them as they are, but after a good bit of warm, humid weather riding including a week's worth of full days in the saddle last month they seem to be permanently a bit damp with sweat. Will it hurt anything to shellac them as they are or should I make an effort to dry them out as best possible first? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Finally did it
Steve - yup. Never ridden more than 85 at one clip before. MichaelH - rode 27 on the Sam Hillborne yesterday. Had to see how the new setup is working. Bill C. - the Gateway trail out and back, down the Vento to Point Douglas Trail, down around Grey Cloud Island, across the 494 bridge, South St. Paul trail, Big River Trail, Mendota Bridge, Ft. Snelling trail (stop at Hiawatha), West River Road to downtown, Stone Arch Bridge, Intercampus Bikeway and home. Jeremy - The Woodchippers are my favorite bar right now. Even better than the Noodle. At least with the bars up high. The drops seem to be a natural position and are great for climbing. Oh, and it was totally unsupported and solo. Figured no one else would want to hear any possible whining in case things didn't go well. New goal - century on the Hillborne. Hopefully this year. (Or maybe, just possibly, stretch it to a 200k). Re: [RBW] Re: Front loading ...???
I think this suggests that the Sam Hill does not have the geometrical features that Jan and many others would think are better for accommodating a front load, at least an over-wheel front load. The trail of a 60 cm SH is 59 mm and the flop (rise/fall) is 17.4 mm. Bikes that have been noted (by Jan and others) as having better handling with front loads have rather lower trail and flop numbers. Rather than navigate the intricacies farther, I'll leave it at that. OTOH, some claim to have found that actual geometry matters a lot less than does the stability of the front bag. After my experiments with my Woodrup, I wonder it it isn't enough to make sure the front load isn't swinging, and that the center of gravity of the added load is behind the front axle. On Sun, Jul 11, 2010 at 2:00 PM, PATRICK MOORE bertin...@gmail.com wrote: Very interesting post. I was particularly struck by this: Suffice to say that the effect of the front load on the steering can be harnessed to make a bicycle handle better with a front load than without, but only if the bike’s geometry is suitable for a front load. *Such a touring bike, fully loaded, handles as well as a good racing bike, whether cornering hard, riding no- hands (not recommended, of course), or climbing out of the saddle*. (Emphasis added.) But on the Sam Hill -- he said expertly, having ridden with a light front load fully 6 miles -- just the opposite obtains: turns are harder to initiate, the bike wants to track wide, and it feels a bit squirrely in the corner; all this compared to a load (much heavier, too) on a very stiff and low slung Tubus Logo. So I conclude (to be confirmed, I will guess, by more front load riding) that the SH is best with rear loads and only light ones in front. We'll see. I know that touristo extraordinaire Craig Montgomery said onlist that a well designed and well loaded touring bike will handle impeccably (I am paraphrasing, not quoting); and perhaps the Sam Hill is just not the optimum tourer. But it will certainly do well enough. I am consoled that, on my two remaining Riv customs (fixies both), the butt-back, long rear-center, shortish front-center handling with skinny, short wheels, is wonderful. Also, after the first paintjob, Grant/Riv no longer controls the paint job style choices so if it's a second paintjob, that would also explain the difference. [RBW] Re: Finally did it
Hey Eric, big congrats on doing your first century. Will you try to do another one, on the Sam perhaps, before the end of summer? Isn't it great having all that time on the bike? I love it. I also love the mixture of physical fatigue and emotional bliss I feel as I arrive home. I've done quite a few centuries solo and with friends (and a number of brevets) but never an organized century. And although I did a 600k in May I haven't been able to get out for a century this summer yet. A friend and I headed out for a big 300k ride of our own design a few weeks back which was cut short when he had a horrific and spectacular high speed collision with a guard rail resulting in a trip to the ER via helicopter and a stay in the ICU. Fortunately he's gonna be okay. I'm in DC dealing with family tragedy right now but when I return to Portland I'll be back on the bike and plan on doing a couple of centuries, including one pedaling free (platform pedals) and also a camping trip or two in which I cover 100 miles each day. We'll see what happens. I do love all the time on the bike and the solitude. I'd also like to do a century on my Quickbeam. [RBW] Deb's Roadeo and Boulder to Ft. Collins ride report
Hi- Briefly delurking here to post some pictures of our version of a S36O, a weekend bike trip from Boulder, CO to Ft. Collins, CO and back from a few weeks ago. The distance was about 60 miles each way. The only mistake we made was picking the hottest day of the year to ride the first leg of the trip. Oh well, both Deb and I survived. The group may be interested in the pictures of Debbie's 53 cm Roadeo, expertly assembled by Jay and Mark at Riv. Deb's Roadeo is unusual in that it sports Albatross bars. Other than that, the build is pretty standard: Sugino XD crank, Campy triple FD, Dura Ace 9 speed RD, DA bar end shifters, Tektro big-mouth brakes, Paul brake levers, and Brooks Finesse saddle. Also, we love the Grand Bois 700C x 26 mm tires. Pics are here on Flickr: http://tinyurl.com/2davafh Since we weren't camping, we didn't need much in the way of gear and a saddle bag each worked well for both of us. I used a Carradice Jr. and Deb mounted her Hobo bag as a seat bag. I also had Deb's tweed tube bag on my handlebars. Worked great! You can see I'm a total failure as a bag matcher... Yep, you're right. [RBW] Re: Finally did it
Eric Chapeau!! I haven't done a century in about 3 years so hats off to you. I did my own Populaire/Metric century on Saturday (100k). A poor mans version of your real Century ride. I did a Populaire last year but finished well out of the 7 hour time limit much too my disappointment. This year I was able to do it in 5.5 hours total -must be the steel bike ;-), or maybe it was my buddy trading pulls with me. If you can do the 100 miler then I say go for it and do the 200k. I have to imagine there is a group of crazy Randonneurs in your neck of woods putting on 200k rides http://www.rusa.org/ Just Curious, How do you like the disc brake setup on the fargo and how does it compare to the brakes on your SamH? Also, after the first paintjob, Grant/Riv no longer controls the paint job style choices so if it's a second paintjob, that would also explain the difference. I am a little confused by the poster not knowing the model, though. It would seem that any Riv owner would know that. [RBW] Re: why hobo bags rock
I have the Acorn version as well, but it is smaller in every way. Too narrow for a dozen eggs, and the small pockets are about 30% smaller, barely holds my iphone and billfold, whereas the carradice can take an alien tool and my panasonic GF1 in a single side pocket. if you do not need to haul as much the Acorn is great, for those bigger days I love the carradice. Also, after the first paintjob, Grant/Riv no longer controls the paint job style choices so if it's a second paintjob, that would also explain the difference. [RBW] dat funky Riv
Well, now I know how Louis Vuitton feels (I've always been curious). I've been know to have brain farts (and grain farts), but I'm thinking what lugs are those? They aren't ours. We did use Henry James crowns for about 20 frames for a while there, till we got our own. The dropouts are raised in back but not in front, and that wasn't a WF style back then. The fork rake looks a bit better than the early WF-builts (nowhere close to post-'97). The seller may not know how to measure a chainstay, so I can't go by the 42cm listing (I think the shortest ever was 42.5). But mainly, the lugs. It seems odd to me. too, that JB would paint one that-a-way. Once somebody owns it, it's their deal, and we don't hold JB to any style (he knows what I like, but a guy's got a right to make a living). I called him now, line's busy, I'll try again. The serial number would tell the story. The seller de-listed it, I think. If it's a Riv underneath that pump instead of seat tube paint job, then fine etc., but at this point I'm still guessing it's not. [RBW] Tire and Bar Tape Color Help
Hey guys! Slightly off Riv topics I picked up a 91 Bridgestone RB-2. Very nice bike and it is in amazing condition. Now on topic with Riv stuff. I need to get some bar tape for the aforementioned bike. It came stock with white but I don't like white especially with cloth tape. I plan to do cloth tape, twine and shellac (not sure if amber or clear that depends on color). It is silver with blue accents. I think going blue might be too obvious and maybe overplaying the blue. I am almost thinking of going green like celery or dark pine. Thoughts? I know some of you have very great taste in colored bar tape. http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/japanese-cloth-tape/16-125 SecondlyI want to get some tires for the bike. Something light and pretty fast as this is going to be my faster road bike setup. You guys did a great job steering me towards the Pari-Motos for my Bleriot so I figure you may be able to help me with some 700C tires. It appears I can go pretty fat as it comes stock with 28C and seems to have extra room. Here is the bike. As you can see that tape really needs some help. I also still need to clean it up and get the bars up a bit. http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii31/Johnny_Alien/1991%20Bridgestone%20RB-2/0711001938.jpg -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Again, placebo effect is probably in effect, but the tires seemed to make the bike a bit zippier. (Photo above before the tire swap). I bought the cheapest padded tape at REI. It was Profile brand. With one roll I was able to do like a 7 inch layer on each 'grip'. With the other roll I did another layer of padded tape. Then I took a single roll of Toshi cloth. It has a removable backing to the adhesive, so you can unroll it completely and cut it exactly in half. That was plenty to cover the full length with a decent overlap. I pulled it as tight as I could. I twined both ends for looks and went to town with the clear Zinsser. Both the Profile tape and the Toshi cloth made it easy to cut without having to deal with exposed adhesive. Profile has none, and Toshi has backing. Newbaum's also has backing, so that will work too. Tressostar and CatEye do not have backing, which will make it tougher. [RBW] Re: Fw:URL Odd small Riv on Ebay
I am the local buyer! This frame did indeed seem strange to me, seemed a bit sporty for a Rivendell, and the lugs did seem off as well. But, the fit is on, and regardless of the builder I have been looking for a frame similar to this. So, I would very much like to find out if it is indeed a Rivendell, or something else. Before I found this thread I had emailed Mark yesterday, and he wasn't able to turn much information up. I am currently not yet in possession of the frame, as I am out of town until next week. But, once I get it I'll be more than willing to do any detective work that may yield a response. The serial number, as shown in the picture, isn't totally helpful. The number portion is easily readable: 95152 but there is a single character before this that is partly obscured by paint. It could be an R or a B perhaps even a P I suppose. But, it DOES look most similar to an R I will be able to look closer, of course, once I receive the frame. The current owner is not the original owner, or the one who painted it, but referred to the individual who he purchased it from as a friend. So, perhaps I can do some more intensive detective work. [RBW] Re: Tire and Bar Tape Color Help
Another nice tire choice if you can find them is the Vittoria Rubino Pro in 28 mm. I find them a bit livelier than the Roly-Poly's (which I rode for long time), and not particularly flat prone for a sporty tire. IMO blue would be a conservative but classy choice, gray would be very quiet but could work well as a shade in between the silver frame and the black saddle. Want a flash of color? Go with bright orange, the complementary color to blue (opposite on the color wheel). Use clear shellac to keep the orange bright, or for even better durability and absolutely no color change try clear water based polyurethane varnish instead of shellac. I've proposed this for years, but AFAIK I'm the only guy on the planet to have tried it. It may not sound as 'natural' as shellac, but water based poly holds up really well and emits about 1/3 the VOC of shellac. I'll let their short blurb take it from here: -- The San Francisco Randonneurs would like to invite you to participate in our first ever Fall Populaire, to be held on July 17th, 2010.
