[RBW] Re: Cable End Soldering

2013-12-30 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
It is possible to solder stainless if you use the right flux. Look for
stainless-specific flux; they usually contain zinc chloride and
hydrochloric acid (read: ensure adequate ventilation). You'll want to fray
out the individual strands a bit to clean them with alcohol or something
similar before applying the flux, and you'll want to be careful with that
flux since it's not the gentlest thing in the world.

I still occasionally solder my (stainless) cable ends. In fact, for the
cantilever straddle cable ends, I usually put a dollop of solder (i.e.,
excess) at the end to make a "bulb" (like a spring onion!) so that it's
easier to grab ahold of. It's a nice conversation piece for the keen eyes.

Re: [RBW] Re: Larger 650B Homer's

2013-12-30 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Hey Michael,

Well, couple reasons on the 650B preference though I'd be the first to
admit that I don't really have enough run time with some higher quality
700C tires to make a great comparison. Just so I'm very clear about what
my frame of reference is this is what I've ridden ;

- 650B convertered Trek with 42mm EL Hetre's
- 700C Jack Brown 33.33mm on the Trek and a Surly Cross Check
- 700C Nomad Resist 45mm (really 42mm) on the Atlantis
- 26"x 2" Big Apple's on a Univega Tandem, MB-5 and XO-3
- 27"x 1.25" GatorSkins on a Burley Tandem

My reasons for liking the 650B;

- The EL Hetre's are the best tire I've ridden, and it's not close
- Slight advantage in inherent strength due to the smaller size
- I have two frames that are a bit large for me, 64 cm Trek and 64 cm
Atlantis, the 700C tires on the Atlantis make me feel to tall in the
saddle, the Trek w/ 650B feels much better
- Goldilocks Syndrome... just the right size, not 26", not 700C... I was
thinking it would be sweet to have 650B only wheel's between my wife and my
bikes plus a tandem eventually

That's about it really, definitely not scientific. And given that I've
just gotten my XO-3 (26") up and running I'm by no means a wheel size
zealot... I'm running a 26er, 650B and 700C bike side by side by side
right now. I've built dyno hub's for both my 650B and 700C wheelset even.
I'm sure that on the right size frame a 700C would suite my needs very
well, but I'd still miss that Hetre tire. Gotta try the Soma C Line tires...

In case you are interested, here is the latest on the XO-3 project. -

Hugh,
The Saluki was 650b, and the Hilsen was 700c, but otherwise the same; because
the functionality was the same, the lines were merged into the Hilsen; the
overlap was kept to give a bit of a choice, but the upper end of the
Saluki-side was trimmed down a bit...

If someone politely asked and paid for it, couldn't canti-posts be added to a
Hilsen?

Re: [RBW] Re: Larger 650B Homer's

2013-12-30 Thread Hugh Smitham
>Where the cutoffs are seems to be more arbitrary from my perspective and
Grant places those by instinct.

It must be arbitrary as the Hilsen switches back and forth starting from
the 55cm @ 622 then back to 584 on the 56cm and so on up to the 58cm and
after that remains 622. Is there another Riv production bike that does that
rather than a straight cut off? Why did Grant decide to switch from 650b
exclusively on the Saluki (another example of a Riv production bike with
one wheel size) then change that format on the Hilsen?

The only reasons I've ever heard for different wheel sizes 1.) Toe overlap
and 2.) Aesthetic. I understand the first and the second doesn't really
make sense as can be seen by Steve's previous Saluki.

I've asked Grant what he though about a larger 650b Marcos. I love how the
little ones look with nice plump tires, but the BB is a bit low for a
conversion. Maybe make a 54 and a 56cm for 650b based on the smaller bikes
geometry. I think it would still be pretty sporty. Seemed like he was open
to the idea.

I'm not sure I can tell which position you are referring to. The position
that wheelsize should in some way track with frame size goes back to the
first Rivendell model that came with multiple wheelsizes across it's size
range, which would be the Atlantis? That bike had and has 26" wheels in

Nice! My QB is also the first gen green. I was running drops until about a year
ago when I switched those out for Albas with cork grips. I like that riding
position much better, and since I climb a lot, the forward bends on the Albas
are good for the climbing or aero poses.  As I said, I climb a lot, so I
switched out the 40/32 for a 32/24. I have a dos eno 16/18 on the drive side,
but also a free 22 on the flip side. I'm no blaze, but I can climb Mt.
Tamalpais in the 32/22. These are great bikes, and lots of fun.

Like the look of the bike.  If the 60 takes wider tires, it could be a fine alternative to the Hillborne.
Two other things - thought the blue and orange was in honor of the Denver Broncos.  And the camera Grant used has been my favorite for over a year now.  There are times I think it takes better snaps than my mirrorless system.

[RBW] Re: Albatross bar and stem length?

2013-12-30 Thread Joe Bernard
I had that setup on an AHH that was already a bit big on me (read: longish
toptube). I ended up selling cockpit and frame (separately) so never
made the swap, but I would have purchased a 13 stem to replace the 10. My
experience with Albas is that the sweep-back is significant.

The rider puts on 10K+ miles a year on a couple of tricycles in Denmark's

Re: [RBW] My new-to-me 'Beamer

Congratulations! Tell us how you like the ride once you put some miles on
it.

My ideal dirt bike (ie, for the dirt conditions that I ride in, generally
flattish and sandy roads and trails) would be a Quickbeam that takes 60 mm
tires. The 40/34 X 17 gearing would be just right. One day

Patrick Moore, who just rode his '99 gofast fixie 20 windy and hilly miles
in 50*F Corrales, NM -- and who actually downshifted to the 17/65" 'cause
the uphills had a headwind.

I like orange and blue, even if it reminds me of Clemson U. It also reminds
me of the Denver Broncos, which makes me think of Peyton Manning, and that
makes me happy, so I guess the colour combo makes me happy. That said, I'm
pleased to discover that I didn't experience buyer's remorse after seeing
the bike like I thought I might. I do love the Cheviot's headbadge. I long
for a nicer headbadge on the Betty Foy, but most days I don't even think
about it. I really only think about it when I see the Hunq headbadge, and
now, the Cheviot.

The longer chainstays - would that have an appreciable difference on the
ride quality?

Ok, despite the colors of the wrong SEC team, lol, I really like the color
on this; and I like the additional chainstay length. And, there's no mixte
in the stable, which I'd considered for awhile...

Overall, I like it.

But...

If it's the same clearances as the Betty/Gomez, max listed tire-size is
40mm (maybe a 42mm); that'd take a Hetre or a Rumpkin, but not the 650b
Big Ben or a Quasi... oh, and on a Sam I could do a 55, but for the Bettys
I'm a bit past the 55 size-wise, I'd probably need to go to the 60, which
switches from 650b to 700c; in 700c, the Little Ben would fit, but, that'd
fit my canti-Rom anyway...

What I'd be hoping for, is a 'more economical' 650 mountain bike, mixte or
otherwise... I'd be willing to undersize a bike a bit (like running a 58
Hilsen to get a 650b instead of 59 700c); but switching to a Hilsen isn't
going to be more economical than the Betty/Sam either (Homers are
designed for up through a 40, too; I think you can squeeze bigger, but I
don't 'know' that...)

Cool bike, I like it, but, I don't think it's one that quite gets me
anywhere I'm not already, or want to head... Maybe at some point it'd make
sense for me. I do like it. But, not at this point...

Re: [RBW] My Bleriot's Resale value diminished because of this?

2013-12-30 Thread Bill Lindsay
What you do is bring up details about your bike over and over here on the
board, and save the content generated from the discussion, and use that
content as "value added" when you resell your bike.

"As discussed on RBW Owners Bunch"

My sister just bought a fixer upper home in Fullerton. They have to
replace large sections of hardwood flooring, and their floor-guy is great
at salvaging flooring from all around Fullerton for just this purpose. You
match the age and style and everything. Anyway, when he brought in the
vintage wood, my brother-in-law asked "Where did you get these boards?"
The floor-guy just said "from an old building". What my brother-in-law
WANTED was "I rushed in to this 1920's era speakeasy and ripped them out
just as the wrecking ball was about to topple the building". He wanted a
story to give his new-old-floor some soul. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers
danced on these floorboards. That kind of thing. It's beausage in the
storytelling vein.

[RBW] Re: Larger 650B Homer's

2013-12-30 Thread Bill Lindsay
Tony

The Saluki Geometry Chart is here:

Saluki Geometry

The Saluki was offered all the way up to 62cm, with 650B wheels. That's
the bike you want if you want 650B and don't want to convert a 700c
Rivendell and insist on remaining tall. :)

The geo of the Salukis and the 650B Hilsens are identical. Why did they
morphe the Saluki into 650B Hilsens? I think just to simplify the buying
process, because the bikes really are intended to be used the same way.
Why did the morphe cause Rivendell to ditch the 60 and the 62 frame size?
I don't know for sure, but I believe it has to do with Grant's general
philosophy that wheelsize and body size should be related. The biggest
humans get the biggest frames and the biggest wheels. The shorter folks
get smaller frames and smaller wheels and the middle sizes are in a
transition area.

If I were you, and I was determined to own a 650B Rivendell, I would call
them and tell them that I want to buy a 62cm 650B Hilsen. They have the
design done. They have a vendor that makes the 650B bikes. They have all
the lugs, etc. I can't think of a technical reason why they couldn't build
it. Maybe there is fixturing work that they haven't done at Waterford for
that size. Maybe they would simply say "no" on philosophical grounds and
assure you that you'll do better on a 63cm 700c Hilsen.

And then, to your question about mapping PBH to bike size on the Hilsen
page, they absolutely do have that as a cheat-sheet at the showroom. I've
looked at it numerous times. It was right there on the wall. They
absolutely don't mind idle curiosity, so don't be shy. Or just email one
of the guys. They are always nice about it. Even if you emailed them and
said "I'm a 90PBH, and I really want to buy a 650B bike. Would a 62cm
Saluki on the second hand market fit me OK?", I promise they will respond
honestly.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell "SimpleBeam" - New Model - Call for the Seriously InterestedB

2013-12-30 Thread Patrick Moore
After debating all the various possibilities for extending the gearing on
my two Riv fixies, , I still come back to the S3X as the best idea. I like
having the pawls in the add-on freewheel, and, especially, that direct
drive is in 3d. Just waiting for the $$ to get them and have them built
into wheels.

Hopefully they will still be available at that distant future date when I
do have the money.

I've heard of people using Krazy Glue, too. I decided to give soldering a

Re: [RBW] Re: Larger 650B Homer's

2013-12-30 Thread Hugh Smitham
Tony,

Was there a larger Hilsen 650b made? This is a really good question...

I'm presuming as in the other end of the spectrum (smaller sized frames)
there is less demand for bikes in larger stand overs. Rivendell has learned
a lesson or two in moving/selling those frames at either end...a buddy of
mine bought a 47 cm Hilsen for half of what I paid for my Hilsen lucky so &
so...it's the old distribution model where businesses would project what
sizes and number of units they needed and rolled the dice they'd all sell.

These days the distribution chain is more controlled (thanks to computers)
and you see less actual deals because of leftover stock. Instead retailers
(not talking bike frames here) mark up their products 2.5 to 3 times
wholesale with the notion that at the end of the season they can mark down
and recover their investment. Rivendell works off the old model because
that's 1.) the way the frame & fork industry operates in small batches
(unless your Trek or Specialized) and 2.) I'm also assuming here they
figure on doing customs for the sizes outside the average these days (not
bashing Riv here) and deferring the financial burden to the buyer of their
non standard sizes. I never really realized that my Hilsen was the largest
650b they listed/produced.

I also know that you know all this it's just me being didactic for my own
sake.

It sounds, though, like the original poster is looking for this: "Dude.

I had the same fear of diminishing the resale value of my Bontrager by
changing anything... 14 years on, it's worth 25% of its original cost

orange and blue together look odd to me. And why use the lugs with the hearts
again? And fill in with blue? When I first heard the Betty was being replaced,
I worried that I'd love the new bike and regret the Betty, but I think the
Betty the lovelier bike, and also more fitted to the girly city bike crowd (of
which I'm a happy member). The Betty delighted ladies everywhere with its smart
femininity. And it was the second best selling bike at Riv, if I recall. I
don't want to be a spoilsport, but I'm not understanding the new bike...though
the head badge is dazzling!

I think if I was in the market for a Riv mixte, I'd have to pay for a custom
paint job; the Glorious red or the lipstick-creamy pink sumehra has on hers...
What do all the other girls around here say???

[RBW] Re: Cable End Soldering

2013-12-30 Thread George Schick
The comment about unsolder-able stainless cables replacing the old
galvanized ones is spot on. I used to like to solder mine, too - can't do
it any more, though. However, I do like the idea of placing a small piece
of heat shrink on the ends - never thought about doing that before, but
it's a good one.

Hetres are wonderful. They ride very well, last a very long time and
are (in my experience, anyway) robust and get very few flats. When the
"ribs" wear down smooth there's still around 2,000 mi of tread life left.

There's even good in worn out ones. You know very often you get glass
punctures and cuts that go all the way through the tire and leave
sometimes excessively large holes. A used Hetre offers the perfect
material for patching and repairing such holes. The Hetre has a very
large sidewall area between the bead and the tread rubber -- more than 1
cm wide, much larger than other tires -- that is perfect as a glued-on
inside boot to patch such holes. Both rubber cement and Shoe Goo work
to paste such patches down. I've also used a patch made from a Hetre
sidewall to fix an abrasion or scuff that had gone all the way through
the sidewall of a Pari Moto, that one with Shoe Goo. (I wasn't 100%
sure the scrape went all the way through, not until I pumped up the tire
and the Shoe Goo started oozing through!)

I've even used material taken from a worn-out Hetre to fix a tear in the
sole of a Performance neoprene bootie: a patch inside made from the
sidewall, and a section of tread rubber pasted on the outside, on top of
the sole over the tear.

It's in the eye of the buyer. As a buyer I'd be suspicious of anyone who didn't
disclose contact with a car. If I was out riding later and someone said "Oh
that's 's old Bleriot? Can't even tell it was hit by a car!" I'd feel there
was not due disclosure on 's part and not do business with them again.

My personal belief is that full, honest disclosure is the best policy.

[RBW] Re: Albatross bar and stem length?

I don't think stem length is as critical with a swept back bar as it is
with drops.
Changing from Noodles to Albas I went from an 8 cm to 11 cm stem. 12 would
probably work just as well for me.
I would take my best guess and try to get a good price on a used stem. If
it doesn't work out, you can probably get all or most of your money back
and try again.

Hugh,

I think you and Peter are right on wrt stand over/pbh as the guide line. I
just don't understand why the Homer wouldn't have the same type of info
available for sizing that the other Riv's have.

I definitely want to get out to CO or find someone I can test ride an All
Road from at some point, it looks like a great frame.

It's too bad that there isn't a clear, non-custom Riv option for a ~90pbh
person in 650B these days. (Got to refer back to Grant's post about the
'simple-one' where he mentions this kind of sentiment where you pine for a
bike you didn't buy when it was available! :) )

[RBW] Re: Cable End Soldering

2013-12-30 Thread ascpgh
Up vote that. Finished cables in that way at the shop, then put the end
caps on delicately (CPSC compliant). Those were the MTB heydays and there
was a 60% chance a newly, carefully, built bike would be back in a week or
two after being heavily used off-road and in need of cable/housing cleaning
to return shifting and braking functions. Pop the lightly placed end caps
off and the cables strip out of housings and can be fed back through them
like butter. Our free first month of service could tolerate easily cleaning
things up but not replacing cables and housings.

On mine, after the solder I shape the soldered ends to blunted round
end with a fine file for greatest ease of feed into the housings. They
won't poke you for blood if you brush against the end either.

I'm a huge fan of old school mechanics techniques, but the reason that no

stainless cables when it comes to smoothness and longevity.

Re: [RBW] Re: Larger 650B Homer's

2013-12-30 Thread Hugh Smitham
What Peter said is how I determine frame size relative to my PBH which is
84 cm and I went with a 58 cm with a stand over of 82.2 cm.

What's interesting IIRC your riding a 64 cm Atlantis but want something a
bit smaller which I imagine would still put you outside the Hilsen's 650b
stock frame sizes...unless they have some larger ones hanging in the
rafters they're not talking about? Or maybe you'd have to have a Riv
custom. In which case that Rambler is looking pretty nice. Or the Tig
welded Boulder Bikes All Road 650b frame set for $1435.

Still waiting on that second saluki question.
