This is a very lightly used Quickbeam Green Roadeo. I purchased this
from the first run of Roadeos, and only road it a few hundred miles over
the last few summers in Upstate New York. This green/cream-colored frame is
offset with lots of antique brown leather, and nickel-colored components.
The overall effect is very beautiful; one of my best designed bikes, and
I'm sorry to have to sell it. Why I'm selling? My wife and I are are
expecting a child soon, and I am liquidating my stuff so that we can put
away some savings. I will miss this bike, and really wish that I had ridden
 it more.

Everything is in like-new condition. There are a couple tiny scratches
in the paint, and I have pictured them - nothing serious or very
noticeable, and certainly no dents. Honestly, I did not even notice them
until looking the bike over for sale. The frame was treated with T9 per
Rivendell's method. Estimated value new is upwards of $4750. Save yourself
a grand, and the wait time!

I have included pictures from various times in the bike's life - the most
recent pictures are the indoors series against the brick wall.

Components: (Prices are mostly current Riv Prices)

Brooks B17 Narrow Saddle ($108) [great condition, hardly broken-in]
 Tange-Levin Headset ($60)
 Nitto S-83 Seat Post ($97)
 Brooks Challenge Seat Bag ($90)
 Shimano Tiagra Brakes Levers ($110)
Two (2) King Bottle Cages ($36)
 Nitto Technomic Stem 10cm ($50)
 Silver Shifters ($78)
 Phil Wood Bottom Bracket ($138)
Wheels: Phil Hubs (Freewheel) laced with DT Competition Double-Butted
Spokes to Velocity Aerohead Rims ($700)
 Challenge Parigi/Roubaix 23mm Tires ($150)
 Sugino Mighty Tour Crankset, 170mm, 34/50T ($300)
 Shimano Freewheel 7spd, 13-28 F($20)
 Nitto 42cm 'Dream' Handlebar ($80)
 Campagnolo Mirage Front Deraileur ($50)

[RBW] Portland Bound

2013-07-12 Thread Adam
Greetings Portlanders,

My wife and I are currently traveling around the San Juan islands on her
Atlantis and my Hillborne. I wrote the list some time ago for recommendations
about our journey and a few Portland locals suggested getting together while we
were in town. We still have a week or so on the road, riding primarily through
the cascades between here and Portland, and I thought I should throw out a
potential time to meet up. Our plan is to arrive in Portland sometime around
the 18th. I was thinking it would be great to grab a beer with some of you good
folks on the evening of Friday the 19th. I've heard Velo Cult is a great place
but am open to other suggestions. Anyone game?

planning to catch the train from Burlington to Tacoma. From Tacoma we've
got this route- *http://goo.gl/maps/jpGQn* http://goo.gl/maps/jpGQn inspired
by a similar route posted by Jan Heine. We'll arrive in Portland on either
the 17th or 18th of July and have two or three nights booked in the

would be helpful as well as any ideas of fun things we could get into

[RBW] San Juan Islands Tour Advice

2013-05-13 Thread Adam
Greetings All,

Planning a tour this summer for my wife and I up to the San Juan Islands.
We have about two weeks to spend on my Hillborne and her Atlantis exploring
the area. We live in Berkeley and are planning to take the amtrak up and
then ferry and cycle around.

I know there are a bunch of NorWesters on this list and wanted to ask some
advice. We'll likely try to spend at least a day or two in Portland on our
way back as well.

Is the Seattle Amtrak the best station to get off?
If so, does this look like a good route to get to the
ferry? http://goo.gl/maps/uxOqM
Any campsites along that route that are recommended?
Any words of wisdom about the islands themselves (things we must see/avoid)?

Looking forward to sharing images with the list when we return and also
open to any recommendations as they emerge.

Cheers,
Adam

I'm spoiled living a short distance from walnut creek where the best shop of
them all resides, but it would be cool to check out some interesting shops.

Thanks!

[RBW] Trade Big Dummy for a trail-ready riv (plus/minus change?)

2013-03-14 Thread Adam Kimball
I'm about to put my 20 Surly Big Dummy (2009 model with sloped top tube)
up for sale so that I can buy a big for foothill trail riding. It'll
likely be a Sam, Hunq, or something similar. If you've been wanting to
sell your such ride for a BD maybe we can save time on a trade plus/minus
money as might be needed. I ride a 61 Hilsen, size-wise.

It's the 2010 frame and build kit. Quite a bit nicer than what you'd get
today on a new one. Here's a helpful spreadsheet I found detailing the
changes:

I have a good friend in the process of starting a new company in San

be a well made steel frame with great clearances and may be a budget
option worth looking at.

Hope that's helpful.

[RBW] Sackville Saddlebag Support

Greetings All,

I use a Sackville Saddlebag size medium -

and I'm getting some rub on my rear tire.

I am thinking of purchasing a carradice bagman support, expedition
size, and wonder if anyone else has used this combination? I was
originally looking for a silver hupe but they have been discontinued.
If you have a used hupe or a bagman support for sale please let me
know.

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: Using a Sam Hillborne as a go fast-ish bike

2012-03-27 Thread Adam
When I have my Sam set up without racks and noodles it goes fastish. A
light wheel set makes all the difference in my mind. With that set up
I can keep up with my slower roadie friends.

It is a wonderfully versatile bike as I have also thrown racks on and
toured for weeks on end. That said you already have a dedicated tourer
in the 520 so that might not be such a selling point.

Going to ride my lightish setup in my first randonuer event at the San
Francisco populaire this weekend. I imagine it'll be plenty fast
enough.

Hope this is helpful somehow.

Good luck,
Adam

On Mar 25, 4:13 pm, SeanMac seanm...@gmail.com wrote:
I'm considering pulling the trigger on one of the new blue Sam
Hillborne's.  They look like really wonderful bikes.  Strong, versatile,
attractive are words that come to mind when I think about this bike.  These
are qualities that I find attractive.  However, I also like to go fastish.
Can I do this with a Sam as well?

I'm pushing 45 years old.  A few years ago I had a custom made go-fast bike
built for me.  That bike goes fast, but is limited in what it can do.  I
also have a Trek 520 Touring bike.  This bike, obviously, is built for
touring.  Its not very fast, nor very lively.  In short, my Trek isn't much
fun to ride.  I'm looking for a bike to fit in between these two bikes --
one that will be able to carry a few bags and ride on stone dust bike paths
(such as the Erie Canal path), but one that will not feel sluggish to ride
 (like my Trek).

Most of the time, when I see photos of Sams, the bikes seem to be set up to
be workhorses -- carrying a collection of bags and racks.  I want to be
able to do this with a bike (thus the attraction to the bike in the first
place).  However, I would like to use noodle bars and go on fast-ish club
and recreational rides as well.  In fact, the vast majority of rides will
be  20 - 30 mile out for fun and exercise rides.  Is the Sam well suited
to this as well, or will it likely feel more like my Trek 520?  Most likely
I would set up a Sam with Noodle bars and tires such as Roly-Poly or Jack
 Browns.

I'm also considering having a custom built randonneur bike -- one that will
be able to carry some load but also feel quick and lively to ride.
However, if the Sam will meet my needs, it certainly would be a less
expensive alternative.  I don't think that my body has any proportions that
would make me difficult to fit (5ft, 11 inches tall, PBH 87.5, arm length
35 inches) so I don't think that I *need* to go custom (though it sure is
 fun to do so!).

Any thoughts on whether a Sam would be a good choice would be appreciated.

 Sean

[RBW] Nigel Smyth Large Saddle Bag FS

2011-09-30 Thread Adam
Greetings Bunch,

I am raising funds for a new bike and have a Nigel Smyth large saddle
bag for sale. It is the tan canvas with leather trim type, purchased
about 2 years ago. It is huge, comparable to the saddlesack large in
capacity. It is in good condition. It is missing one grommet buckle
(replaceable) on one of the side pockets but is in otherwise great
condition.

I took a couple of pictures this morning but am having difficulty
posting them. If you are very interested send me an email and I'll

Rex,

I am sure I could go one size up, and considered it very strongly for
some time, but this size definitely works. It is great to have the
copious amount of standover height that I do, with a pbh of 84, as I
ride trails and tour loaded often. The important thing for me was
changing my stem to have a greater amount of forward reach, now I've
found the sweet spot.

[RBW] Re: building wheels

2011-04-11 Thread Adam DeFayette
Jason,

I've built a couple sets of wheels now, and relied on both the Brandt
and Brown descriptions/instructions. I think you can pass on the the
Brandt book if you're just looking to build wheels, rather than
understand all the physics of what's going on.

That said, I found this guy's videos to be EXTREMELY helpful:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXpxmqEaxb0

That's not the first video in the series, but it gives an idea of what
each is like. He explains things very well, and you just can't beat
actually watching a skilled mechanic assemble a wheel.

Give yourself plenty of time, and take lots of breaks. Enjoy - it
really is a fun process and something you can be proud of when you're
out on the road.

Just a spread the word kind of thing.  This was posted on the SFR
site.  A good citizen found a road bike and is trying to get it
  returned to the rightful owner.

[RBW] Sam for a Sam

2011-02-21 Thread Adam
Greetings All,

A quick note to see if there is any curiosity in a potential bike
trade. I have a 52cm Hillborne with plenty of beausage though
mechanically perfect that I've had for close to 2 years. I recently
hopped on a larger frame and realized I may be more comfortable on a
56cm. I am perfectly content to ride my 52cm for the next decade but
thought I might see if there is anyone out there with a 56 that feels
too big. Located in Berkeley for logistic's sake.

Cheers,
Adam

[RBW] Marin Ride

2011-02-11 Thread Adam
Riding out this weekend with a group of roughly 25 from Embarcadero
Bart out to Samuel P Taylor. We'll be camping out one night taking
the inland route out and the coastal route back. Some of us, the riv
riders in particular, are thinking of adding the Bolinas Ridge Trail
into our Sunday Ride. Hope to see some Rivendells and their riders
out on the road, or perhaps at the hiker biker site before the rains
come in next week. Just wanted to share these exciting plans.

Hope it's a good weekend of riding for the bay area folks and everyone
else as well.

Cheers,
Adam

[RBW] European Hillborne Tour

2011-01-20 Thread Adam
Greetings All,

I am planning a European tour for about a month this summer on my
Hillborne. I have quite a few questions and wonder if anyone here
knows of a more on-topic list serve to direct my questions towards.

Cheers,
Adam

[RBW] Nitto Front Racks

2011-01-06 Thread Adam
Thought I'd use the rebate to throw on a front rack...

Could anyone speak to whether the Nitto Two-Strut Top Rack is
compatible with canti brakes?

http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/nitto-two-strut-top-rack/20-190

I was planning to sit the small loafer up front...so then any reason
I'd choose the Two-Strut, which seems to manage a good amount of
weight, v. the Mini Front Rack, which handles a smaller load and has
one strut?

http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/mini-front-nitto/20-020

Concerned about weight in the front, especially when I'm on longish
rides--frequent biking in the Oakland and Berkeley hills and it can be
plenty windy.

Any thoughts appreciated--

Best,
Adam

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam/Simpleone and Rohloff hub

2010-12-02 Thread Adam
Thanks all for the thoughtful responses. I've emailed Alex Wetmore to
inquire about his process in adjusting the Quickbeam's rear spacing.
My buddy is pretty set on the Rohloff, as well as a Rivendell, so I'll
let you all know how his process goes.

Had anyone ever used Sheldon's prescribed method of adjusting the
spacing? http://www.sheldonbrown.com/frame-spacing.html

It seems that in his thinking the 15mm change that would be necessary
is a possibility. I've also alerted my friend to the Singular
Peregrine, that looks like a great option if he doesn't want to
attempt the spacing change.

Thanks again.

Cheers,
Adam
