I purchased this from the first run of Roadeos, and only road it a few hundred miles over the last few summers in Upstate New York. This green/cream-colored frame is offset with lots of antique brown leather, and nickel-colored components. The overall effect is very beautiful; one of my best designed bikes, and I'm sorry to have to sell it. Why I'm selling? My wife and I are are expecting a child soon, and I am liquidating my stuff so that we can put away some savings. I will miss this bike, and really wish that I had ridden it more. Everything is in like-new condition. There are a couple tiny scratches in the paint, and I have pictured them - nothing serious or very noticeable, and certainly no dents. [RBW] Portland Bound
Greetings Portlanders, My wife and I are currently traveling around the San Juan islands on her Atlantis and my Hillborne. I wrote the list some time ago for recommendations about our journey and a few Portland locals suggested getting together while we were in town. We still have a week or so on the road, riding primarily through the cascades between here and Portland, and I thought I should throw out a potential time to meet up. Our plan is to arrive in Portland sometime around the 18th. I was thinking it would be great to grab a beer with some of you good folks on the evening of Friday the 19th. I've heard Velo Cult is a great place but am open to other suggestions. Anyone game? Warmly, Adam -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Greetings All, Wanted to update you all about how our plans are proceeding. We're planning to take the train up to Seattle and ride to Anacortes via this route- http://goo.gl/maps/18zd5. From there we'll ferry and ride around the various San Juan islands for a few days. Departing from the islands we're planning to catch the train from Burlington to Tacoma. From Tacoma we've got this route- *http://goo.gl/maps/jpGQn* http://goo.gl/maps/jpGQn inspired by a similar route posted by Jan Heine. We'll arrive in Portland on either the 17th or 18th of July and have two or three nights booked in the Hawthorne Hostel. I would love to hear any feedback about our routes that would be helpful as well as any ideas of fun things we could get into while in Portland on the 18th or 19th. [RBW] San Juan Islands Tour Advice
Greetings All, Planning a tour this summer for my wife and I up to the San Juan Islands. We have about two weeks to spend on my Hillborne and her Atlantis exploring the area. We live in Berkeley and are planning to take the amtrak up and then ferry and cycle around. I know there are a bunch of NorWesters on this list and wanted to ask some advice. We'll likely try to spend at least a day or two in Portland on our way back as well. Is the Seattle Amtrak the best station to get off? If so, does this look like a good route to get to the ferry? http://goo.gl/maps/uxOqM Any campsites along that route that are recommended? Any words of wisdom about the islands themselves (things we must see/avoid)? Looking forward to sharing images with the list when we return and also open to any recommendations as they emerge. [RBW] Trade Big Dummy for a trail-ready riv (plus/minus change?)
I'm about to put my 20 Surly Big Dummy (2009 model with sloped top tube) up for sale so that I can buy a big for foothill trail riding. It'll likely be a Sam, Hunq, or something similar. Quite a bit nicer than what you'd get today on a new one. So...I need a new crank for my drive side. If anyone happens to have an extra single crank arm I'd love to purchase it. Otherwise also interested if anyone has a set. I have chainrings so am covered on that front. They measure 6.5 inches on the inside and 8 inches on the outside. Is that 170mm? When I have my Sam set up without racks and noodles it goes fastish. A light wheel set makes all the difference in my mind. With that set up I can keep up with my slower roadie friends. I also have a Trek 520 Touring bike. This bike, obviously, is built for touring. Its not very fast, nor very lively. In short, my Trek isn't much fun to ride. I'm looking for a bike to fit in between these two bikes -- one that will be able to carry a few bags and ride on stone dust bike paths (such as the Erie Canal path), but one that will not feel sluggish to ride (like my Trek). Most of the time, when I see photos of Sams, the bikes seem to be set up to be workhorses -- carrying a collection of bags and racks. I want to be able to do this with a bike (thus the attraction to the bike in the first place). However, I would like to use noodle bars and go on fast-ish club and recreational rides as well. In fact, the vast majority of rides will be 20 - 30 mile out for fun and exercise rides. Is the Sam well suited to this as well, or will it likely feel more like my Trek 520? Most likely I would set up a Sam with Noodle bars and tires such as Roly-Poly or Jack Browns. I'm also considering having a custom built randonneur bike -- one that will be able to carry some load but also feel quick and lively to ride. However, if the Sam will meet my needs, it certainly would be a less expensive alternative. I don't think that my body has any proportions that would make me difficult to fit (5ft, 11 inches tall, PBH 87.5, arm length 35 inches) so I don't think that I *need* to go custom (though it sure is fun to do so!). Any thoughts on whether a Sam would be a good choice would be appreciated. Sean -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. The dirt trail to Juniper Camp, if you're talking about burma road, is entirely a pushing up the hill affair--I did it once and won't again. Too steep to be much more than a good workout and opportunity to mumble to oneself. It'll be hot, and if we're lucky there'll be tarantulas out. They're nice fellows, so you won't need a tent so long as you've got a warm enough bag. Maybe we should just meet at RBW, seeing as this is the RBW list. [RBW] 26in wheel set
Greetings all, I am looking for a used high quality wheel set for my riv inspired mountain bike. I am running the original wheels from 1983 and think it may be time for an upgrade. I thought to get some Rich built wheels but wanted to ask here first. Currently touring around the big island of hawaii and loving it. [RBW] Re: Sturmey Archer Cassette Hub?
I have a Cross-Check setup with Sturmey-Archer Drums front and back (the 90mm XL versions).I'd say the brakes work about as well as anything else, but I haven't tried them on any really long, really steep roads (can't climb up them anyway with the 5-speed hub). They make cable routing a little more tricky, but they sure do look cool. [RBW] Re: building wheels
Jason, I've built a couple sets of wheels now, and relied on both the Brandt and Brown descriptions/instructions. I think you can pass on the the Brandt book if you're just looking to build wheels, rather than understand all the physics of what's going on. That said, I found this guy's videos to be EXTREMELY helpful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXpxmqEaxb0 That's not the first video in the series, but it gives an idea of what each is like. He explains things very well, and you just can't beat actually watching a skilled mechanic assemble a wheel. Give yourself plenty of time, and take lots of breaks. Enjoy - it really is a fun process and something you can be proud of when you're out on the road. Adam D. [RBW] Sam for a Sam
Greetings All, A quick note to see if there is any curiosity in a potential bike trade. I have a 52cm Hillborne with plenty of beausage though mechanically perfect that I've had for close to 2 years.
