 Now this is just me...
Anvil...reasonably clean...don't really worry about it...good to knock
off the surface rust, if any.

Come to think of it you don't even have to do this flattening thing at
all. I just wanted to make silver ribbons (narrow thin strips of
 silver).
You could hacksaw strips out of the coins.
You could just use whole coins.

 I don't live in
Canada, but I suppose I could possibly get one over here in Europe.

 Almost any coin dealer
or even ebay ie: http://tinyurl.com/ydbc29d  for example.
 Remember: one time initial investment.

 The part I
didn't quite understand was the last part, after you make a thinner sheet,
like cutting into the ribbon? and what's
 a tin snip?

A tinsnip is a heavy duty scissors designed for sheet metal cutting.
The tool clerk will know (and so will your husband).

 I also
don't know how thick the coin is to begin with, since all currencies have
their own sizes, and then how thin is too thin, and how thick should it
 not be.  I don't
know if it would make much of a difference.

If you pound it out to about 3 times its original diameter, it should
be easy enough to cut with the snips.
Not important the thickness, more important the workability.

haven't experimented with any of this stuff yet, and would like to learn
from those with experience, so I hope you won't
mind me asking, what might seem as mundane questions :-)

 Thanks in Advance!
 Aldi

Oh, you also mentioned, that they last longer than the wires or strips.
 Why would that be?

The coins are a full ounce. That's a lot of silver for CS.
 This will last you forever...

Does it have anything to do with the total area, like
the larger it is, the better the energy is dispersed?

 And
I'm trying to think of what someone said about brewing in the sun and adding
something to it for the stirring motion?

 That's Ode's idea.
A black area on the jar in the sun will heat higher/faster  than the
rest of the area, starting a thermal difference and thus thermal
 stirring.

Re: CSSilver wire

2010-03-05 Thread Ode Coyote

It's all about evenly distributed current density and not producing ions in
a supersaturated zone right at the electrode surface where they want to
become particles in close proximity to each other, increasing the odds of
agglomeration.
Current controls the ion emission rate and if you concentrate it on
corners and edges, it's like only half opening the door and staring a fire
in a room so that people running out of the door wind up sharing each
others pants and panties.

The hotter the fire and the smaller the door, the funnier the fashion
statements.

Current draw is a function of conductivity reduction due to greater
distance.
Increased distance increases resistance in the water, so if those tips are
further away from each other, the resistance at those points will be
higher, sending the current elsewhere that's easier to get out through.

The path of least resistance rule.

If you observe the erosion patterns of rectangular flat electrodes, you'll
see for sure that that's not true.

Round wire only has one edge at the tip and it sharpens to a gradual
needle point...then the point erodes up the length of the wire.
Increase the distance between the points and it forces the rest of the wire
to be the path of least resistance..or..get the tip out of the water so it
can't discharge anything.

Like with magnetic forces, distance squared rules apply.
A wire that's twice the diameter will have about 4 times the leading
surface discharge.
A flat surface, about 4 times less discharge for every increment from the
facing center.

Field effect plays a big role in how electrons and ions discharge and
points concentrate fields making them the path of least resistance.

Transmitter antennas, lightning rods , arc lampsetc.

Often there is a ball at the end of a rod to un-point a point.
Curling the end of a wire onto itself hides the end within the
field..making an effective ball.

ode

With two 'flat' surfaces electricity will find it harder to find 'edges'
or 'high spots' and silver will tend to be 'stripped' from the *entire*
surface of the electrodes more evenly, rather than be concentrated at any
of those perceived high points.

I guess it could be said that round wire electrodes have two 'high spots'
also, the length of the two sides of the electrodes directly opposing each
other...but then ya can't win em all g.

Actually, coins have less available surface area.
The edge is like a hundred pointy lightning rods.
Watch and see where oxide deposits form the thickest and what goes away
the fastestyou'll get the idea.

A hemispherical or hemi-cylindrical shape pushes the centers closer
together as the edges stay further back utilizing far more surface area.
Modern electroplating electrodes are *D* shaped for that reason.
[hemi-cylindrical ] and the bottom corners and lower curved edge still gets
rounded trying to go spherical.

On both wire and flat strips, corner/tip discharge over concentration can
be compensated for by bending the tips away from each other a bit.

The silver maple is going for $19.36 today, then you pay the refiners
premium, fabricators charge, shipping, handling, insurance and the sellers
commissions.
You can't buy silver at spot price and it has to be sold at a projected
replacement value if it is to be re-stocked in the future.
By the spool, Abe takes a modest 15% markup and could lose his shirt, big
time, if the price takes a jump just before restocking time.

$36 an ounce for a stock of wire being sold slow by the inch is a big
gamble. The longer you keep it, the bigger the gamble if you plan to re-stock.
If the recent past is any indicator, [and current market pressures are
stronger than ever with a gold to silver ratio well over the traditional
12-15%, now at ~64% ] it should be $200 an ounce.

With a high turnover rate selling coins, there isn't quite so much risk.

Hello Ode,

Just trying to understand this a little bit more and thinking out loud...

I have a SG6 generator that uses flat strips of silver. If I bent the flat
strips (just a little) so the edges were slightly further away from each
other would that help to minimize the edge effects?

Also, could you expand a little on why we are interested in reducing edge
effects?

Thanks.

RE: CSSilver wire

2010-03-04 Thread Neville Munn

[...why we are interested in reducing edge
 effects?]
-Cos electricity is bone idle and will take the line of least resistance...the
shortest route between two points...the quickest way to get from 'here' to
'there'.

'Edges' or 'high spots' on electrodes will be the shortest distance between
those points and the silver will tend to be 'stripped' from those points moreso
than the whole surface of the 'electrode?'.

With two 'flat' surfaces electricity will find it harder to find 'edges' or
'high spots' and silver will tend to be 'stripped' from the *entire* surface of
the electrodes more evenly, rather than be concentrated at any of those
perceived high points.

I guess it could be said that round wire electrodes have two 'high spots' also,
the length of the two sides of the electrodes directly opposing each
other...but then ya can't win em all g.

Almost any coin dealer

Remember: one time initial investment.

 The part I

A tinsnip is a heavy duty scissors designed for sheet metal cutting.
The tool clerk will know (and so will your husband).

 I also
don't know how thick the coin is to begin with, since all currencies have
their own sizes, and then how thin is too thin, and how thick should it not
 be.  I don't
know if it would make much of a difference.

If you pound it out to about 3 times its original diameter, it should
be easy enough to cut with the snips.
Not important the thickness, more important the workability.

haven't experimented with any of this stuff yet, and would like to learn from
those with experience, so I hope you won't
mind me asking, what might seem as mundane questions :-)

 Thanks in Advance!
 Aldi

Oh, you also mentioned, that they last longer than the wires or strips.
 Why would that be?

The coins are a full ounce. That's a lot of silver for CS.
This will last you forever...

Does it have anything to do with the total area, like
the larger it is, the better the energy is dispersed?

 And
I'm trying to think of what someone said about brewing in the sun and adding
something to it for the stirring motion?

That's Ode's idea.
A black area on the jar in the sun will heat higher/faster than the
rest of the area, starting a thermal difference and thus thermal
stirring.

How would you suspend the coins in the water? The alligator clips should not
touch the water, right? I haven't a clue. A photo would surely be helpful.

I have silver strips and have been wondering where I could get new ones

else might have some for sale? I could probably just switch over to the
wires, but which should I get? 10 or 12 gauge? I realize these are elemental

At ccsilver, they say their 99.9% is $31/oz, but they don't give a price

ccsilver's 99.99% is around $37, so they are comparable.

I was thinking that with the Colloid Master, I could use silver coins by
cutting slots in the lid, cutting holes in the coins, and joining the coins and

Re: CSSilver wire

2010-03-03 Thread Richard Goodwin
I have used 10 ga and 12 ga. It really doesn't matter. They will get worn
down anyway eventually, so even if you start with 10 ga, it will gradually
dwindle down to nothing.

I think the wires are easier to work with than coins, although the coins would
have more surface area, so might be better because of that. And yes, for sure
you want to prevent the alligator clips from touching the water. You don't
want any of their material to get into you. It might be interesting to drill a
hole in the coin and hold it with a silver wire, but ... hate to waste the
silver in the hole...

Also, I don't know the purity of coins. Supposedly 999 is ok, but I personally
prefer , which you can definitely get in the wire.

there are places that make silver strips and sheets too. I forget where they
are.

You have to compare purity --- 999 vs

You have to compare actual amounts and actual cost.

price for a one time in a lifetime expenditure. Just Get 'er Done!
A single coin will yield all you'll ever use.

Canada has produced Silver MAPLE LEAF $5 coins since 1988. Each
contains 1 troy ounce of pure 99.99% SILVER and has a $5 face value.

Easy to find, and the purest silver coin in the world.

RE: CSSilver wire

2010-03-03 Thread Neville Munn

Three nine or four nine silver, it matters little. Three nine silver is
usually three nine *plus* % pure fine silver, and is close to four nine anyway
from what I understand, and the amount of impurities in three nine as compared
to four nine is not worth worrying about, water used is of more concern than
the silver purity.

Each to his/her own preference, but don't take to heart some of the info out
there stating minimum four nine silver *should* be used, cos that's 'pure' BS.
Three nine pure fine silver is the *minimum* one should use, anything higher is
personal choice, or availability. If one wishes to use four nine silver that's
fine, go for it, but three nine is adequate, ignoring cost.

Re: CSSilver wire

2010-03-03 Thread cking001
It IS minimal.
Nothing to worry about, won't make a difference.

Canada does it because it's a bullion coin and guarantees its assay to
, there is none finer.

Anything assayed to 999 is AT LEAST 999 or better (could very well BE
, just didn't want the assay cost).

A bullion coin sells for slightly above spot price. I don't see you
getting an ounce of pure silver for much less anyway.

Either fineness is acceptable for CS production.
You don't need a lot, either...

I agree. Those coins sound like a very good way to do CS. The only reason I
do wire is because it is easier to form into convenient shapes, connect to,
etc. Plus, I make many gallons of CS, not only for myself and family, but also
for friends and others, so I do need some quantities of supplies.

Good question. I suppose it depends on what the other .0001 consists of.

Personally, for the $small, I will go the extra 9 in stuff I make for myself

I know it is not a joke.

It has been so long, I don't remember if I bought 12 or 14 ?
The measurements suggest that I purchased 14.

How long does it take to use 100 feet of wire ?

Without digging out the records, I don't even remember where I bought
it. It was from a large silver distributor. I asked for a discount
and did in fact get a decent discount on the quantity of 100 feet.

Later I ordered another 100 feet.

The term AWG 12 and # 12 should be the same. Use the numbers I

CSSilver Wire Diameter and Weight

2006-09-22 Thread Wayne Fugitt

Evening Mike,

Darn, I was sleeping good until I had a dream about measuring and
weighing silver wire.

I know you need to know the diameter of the wire she is using. And the length.

Still these measurements will allow weight calculation. I think you
want to know the weight of a .001 layer of the diameter. Of course
the next .001 layer will be reduced in weight, and continue likewise.

( another volume calculation )

Unless you can weigh the exact wire she is using, my Volume Weights
will be as good a standard as you can get, unless you create one.

Here's an idea:
Can you or anyone you know use a pair of machinist's calipers or a
micrometer to measure the diameter of your wire electrodes for us?

I measured a piece of wire a number of places, and a number of times.

The diameter is .063 inch.( same as the alum in my boat )
Pressure applied to the caliper can change this from .6250 to .6350
The silver is relatively soft may be the reason.

Now the weight. My gain scale was already on the table.

A piece 1.0 inch long weighs 8.8 grains. While my scale shows .1
grain increments, I can see half that or even better

The piece shows 1. inches.

The one inch piece was measured very accurately, however the cut
causes an angle from edge to center. I can't easily avoid that.

To see how this compares, a six inch piece weighs.
The 6 inch piece, measured with a ruler, even though the caliper goes
to 6 inches, weighs 50.5 grains.

The scale is a Lyman Ohaus and has been checked for accuracy many
times. I always trust it for the purpose it was purchased and used
over the years.

Likely the angle of the cut makes this slight difference. I guess I
could have somehow, made a square cut. I don't normally do
laboratory work, just utility grade machine stuff.

The calipers are Starrett 721. I think it only measures 5 10/1000
not one 10/1000 but the 4 decimals look good anyway.

With a good measurement, accurate to the nearest thousanth of an inch
or so, we could calculate the approximate weight of silver that has
gone into your water.

This may be beneficial to everyone once we establish this.
Heck, I bet some of the techo-freaks know this already.

I bet Brooks already has a chart.

If you also know the number of batches you've
made or the number of gallons of water you've used, we'd have a back-of-
the-envelope figure for the average concentration you've been
producing.
You make it sound simple. Now we have made all the PPM meters
obsolete, since they were never right anyway.

What else do I need to do?

  Weight per volume

Volume ( Weight ) in a .001 layer after some cross sectional
areas are calculated.

I use a short cut constant, in electrical wire calculations (
cross sectional area ) of .7854 that I came up with years ago. It
might not be best for these small numbers.

The silver wire I have is . from a reliably silver supplier. I
have purchased 200 feet of it since I started make silver. Likely I
have less than 50 feet left. Can't remember where I got it but I
was impressed by the company long ago.

.1 grain = 6.5 mg ( 6.479892 mg actual )
1.0 grain = 65 mg ( 64.79892 mg actual )

If you were going to do a lot this, I could toss together a program
to do all the math. grin Likely it could be programmed into an HP-15C

Is .999 silver good enough to make new electrodes? It
is the best I have found here so far to make larger

.999 is perfectly fine. There is absolutely NO
evidence that CS made with . (or .9) is better
or more effective or safer than .999 silver.

Every silver wire, however thick it is to start, will
eventually become as thin a a hair, as it is
dissolving into water as you are making CS.
Eventually, when you make as much CS as I make (20-30

CSSilver wire in Ca

2004-05-01 Thread jr

Hi Thora,
Lucky girl! Canada is the home of the $5 Maple Leaf coin - the most pure
Silver available. . Fine. Cheapest way to get hold of it under
guarantee.

I was originally told it had to be for CS, but there seems to be some
cavalier attitudes to that idea around here, :-) but my worry was KNOWING
that unscrupulous people were selling Jewellery grade wire as 999+

Cheers,

John

CSSilver wire prices

2001-11-02 Thread Pamela Maltzman
Hi, all:

I checked out the URLs I already had for silver wire,
.999 or .. I checked out utopiasilver.com, which
has 14-gauge wire for $10.00 per foot.

I finally decided to order from ccsilver.com. Their
per-ounce prices for silver bullion are a little high,
but their prices for silver wire seem quite good.

For . wire,

12-gauge wire was $4.95 per foot
14-gauge wire was $2.95 per foot

They have a $20.00 minimum order, plus about $6.00 for
shipping. They're in Phoenix, AZ.

I ended up ordering 6 feet of the 12-gauge round wire
at $4.95 per foot; came to about $35 plus some change.
 Seemed reasonable to me.

17.5% loss in diameter is about 32% loss of volume. The volume of a cylinder

 Dear Marshall,
I think I should take you on a shopping trip in
England. I want to cry..If only you knew!!!
It took me about 3 weeks to source the silver,
another trek to get a meter, and the worse
component was 'water'. We had to accept some
past its sell by date from Boots which is our
biggest pharmacy. We may be fortunate and
find that Tandy, which has limited radio Shack
components has one. We don't have a RS in
Wolverhampton where I am, perhaps there is
one in London. No, I'm afraid it will be another
 search.
I know someone living in the wilds of California,
with access to a town of 5,000 people who can
 shop better than we can.
 Love and Light
 Carol

Dear Carol,
Drat! I could`ve sent you the silver in days, if I`d just known about you!
(I send silver wire to folks who need it.)
Try a small flashlight, (torch, I think you guys call `em) works just as
well for checking Tyndall.
Love,
Marsha in California, a CS user from awayback...
(I`d give my eyeteeth to see England! My ancestors are mainly from there,
Somersetshire, I believe)

Re: CSsilver wire

1999-08-05 Thread M. G. Devour
The 16 ga. silver wire I've been using was given to me by someone
who said it was pure. I just ordered some 14 ga. .999 myself and
was surprised to find that I couldn't tell the difference between
the two in size. So does the 14 ga. actually last much longer than
 the 16 ga. ? ( A dollar a foot longer!?)

According to my ARRL Handbook, 16 gauge is 0.051 diameter and 14
gauge is 0.064. So, no there's not a *lot* of difference in
thickness. However, the cross-sectional area goes up by almost 60%,
though, so there is a decent difference in volume of metal.

It took me a long time to see a change in diameter on my 12 gauge
wires before I finally replaced them. At least a couple of years.

As to cost, you probably don't need to pay more than a few bucks a
foot, so it's not too much difference, costwise, no matter what.

Anyway, I noticed that the 14 ga. was somewhat softer than the 16,
so I figured the purity must be higher.

Softness/hardness can vary depending on the processing of the metal,
totally independant of purity. It'll depend on how the wire has been
heated and drawn exactly what hardness state it will be left in.
Fully annealed, it'll be soft as butter. Drawing, as in pulling it
through a die to change its diameter, will harden it.

How does one get their silver tested? No jeweler or pawn shop
around here could do it. By the way, who came up with the guage
numbers getting SMALLER when the wire gets fatter?

Good questions!

As far as purity is concerned, if you want to make sure of what you
have, buy it from a source that will guarantee and document the
purity of the material. This includes a lot of chemical and materials
supply houses that sell to industry and research. They'll provide an
analysis by batch, either routinely or by request. Expect to pay more
for the service, though.

Otherwise, just making sure the supplier is sending you fine or
extra fine silver wire, at least .999 pure, rather than sterling,
should be enough if they are at all competent and honest.

There is enough difference between pure silver and sterling that
the jewelers and metal workers buying the stuff would know the
difference and raise hell with that supplier if they couldn't tell
the difference between fine and sterling silver!

As to wire gauge? Ahh ... ahem ... cough... I don't know. GRIN

Be well,

Mike D.

CSSilver wire source?

1999-07-30 Thread Felinely
Hi,
Have only had time to lurk lately.
One of the people on another mailing list asked me if I could give them the
name of a company where they could buy silver wire if they made their own
generator.
When I first joined this list, I remember seeing the subject discussed. All
that email was lost when I had a hard drive problem.
Can anyone help me out here? BTW, is there an archive for the list?
Awaiting recommendations,
Kat Lee
