[RCSE] Several DLG questions

2008-08-12 Thread Dan Ashenfelter
Gentlemen:

Before flying season fades into the sunset, I would like to build a DLG. At
this point in my life I have more time than money, so I am looking at a
built-up entry level kit rather than spending $300+ for an ARF or a
high-performance kit.

I have been researching quite a bit over the last several days, and the
conventional built-up kit selection is rather sparse. Right now, the most
likely candidates are the QF2 from Mountain Models and the Gambler AF from
Wright Brothers RC. I have also considered the relatively low cost ARF Apache
from SoaringUSA.com

As I researched built-up DLG's it seemed that most of them were 50" span or
less rather than the usual 1.5m span that dominates the higher end models. Is
this for structural integrity or mostly for personal convenience/choice? As a
novice DLG flyer should I look toward shorter span models or stick with the
1.5m ships?

I am also curious to understand why the vertical and horizontal tail surfaces
are separated on most DLG's. Aerodynamically I know that fewer intersections
helps with drag, but are there other reasons for doing so?

I have been flying r/c for 36+ years so I am not a novice to model flight but
DLG is a whole new world for me.

If anyone on the exchange has experience with the models named above (or
similar kits) or can offer a novice DLG pilot some practical advise on span
choice, Rudder/Elevator vs Rudder/Aileron/Elevator, polyhedral vs dihedral
models or any other area that might prove helpful, I would be very grateful.

Thanks

Re: [RCSE] Contest idea....Time on tow penalty for TD?

2008-07-14 Thread DAN FINK
And you are going to handle line breaks on the winches how? There isn't a line
used that can't be busted on a full-go-for-it-screw-the-abuse-of-winch launch.
Been seeing it for nearly 30 years and doing for nearly as long.

After watching the World F3J I had an idea for a contest...

Incorporate the time penalty on tow that they have in F3J but in a TD format.

You would have a timer at each winch who would time your launch and write
that time down on your card... For example if it were a 10 min task and you
towed for 6 sec the best time you could get would be a 9:54 even though you
flew a perfect 10... Or even better... Double the time on tow penalty, so if it
was a 6 sec tow the best time you could get would be 9:48. Seems to me it would
throw more strategy and fun into a normal TD contest

  Suggestions ? Comments?

Thanks to the graciousness of Charlie Morey, we've been given the
opportunity to create a PDF archive of Slope Soaring News.

For those not familiar with Slope Soaring News, SSN was Charlie's
brainchild which enjoyed a run of twenty issues in the late 1980s.
The first issue was published in September of 1988, and the last
issue was dated June/July 1990. During nearly two years of
publication, SSN enjoyed quite a following. Manufacturers, flying
sites, aerobatic skills, personalities, and everything else related
to slope soaring was covered. Particular issues of SSN are sometimes
mentioned within the RCGroups web site, the RC Soaring Exchange
e-mail list, and other venues, but very few people are aware of SSN's
existence, and tracking down specific articles is nearly impossible.

Because of this lack of availability, we contacted Charlie and have
received permission to create a PDF archive of all twenty issues of
Slope Soaring News to be included on the RC Soaring Digest web site.

Volume 1 Number 1 is now available for downloading from the Slope
Soaring News page on the RC Soaring Digest web site

>.
 This PDF is just
over 5MB, and we anticipate the other issues will be approximately
  the same size.

We're hoping to place additional issues into the archive on a regular
basis. Availability will be announced on this forum.

[RCSE] Tree Stories

2008-02-01 Thread Dan Ashenfelter
It's good to know that others have felt as foolish as I, when several years
ago I parked my brother's Electrasoar in the top of a very large tree. This
airplane had a pretty flat glide as long as the speed was maintained.

Needless to say, I was making a long approach and thought myself well past
the tree---WRONG!

To complicate matters the tree stood directly over a pen in which stood a
rather nervous Hereford bull.

Every time the radio glitched and the electric motor burped the bull got
even more nervous. The bull's owner was not thrilled and I couldn't really
blame her. After a number of attempts with a large and quite heavy steel nut
tied to a length of line we finally managed to loop it over a branch. The
plane eventually dropped out of the tree and amazingly did not sustain heavy
damage.

It's a helpless feeling trying to rescue someone else's plane from a tree
while a ton of nervous beef is watching.

Re: [RCSE] LSF discussion - some thoughts

2006-09-13 Thread Dan Borer
Why on earth would anyone be satisfied to be an LSF Sportsman Level V when
you could be a 'real' LSF Level V with just a little more dedication and
perseverance?

I found this segment of the hobby about eight years ago. I joined my local
club and I learned that they enjoyed distant contests and was thrilled when
I was invited along. I saw the fun had at these events and bought myself an
older camping trailer so I could immerse myself in the activities afforded
at these gatherings. I signed up with the LSF and began that journey. Being
around the 'big boys' forces you to learn all the aspects of soaring that
make you a better pilot. When the goal and return tasks became part of the
path, an old BMW convertible was purchased. Many of my flying buddies have
had the pleasure of strapping into the back seat while I speed down the
course. These purchases to allow me to enjoy this hobby cost less than many
guys spend on a couple of planes.

The discussion at the field today concerned the threads here and at RC
Groups. The consensus is that if you want to achieve LSF Level V you'd
better be willing to do what it takes. No one wants to get the 'lite' Level
V voucher. One analogy was that if you want to be a champion bass fisherman,
you'd better have a boat, preferably a fast one.

Subject: [RCSE] LSF discussion - some thoughts

OK, I've read nearly all the comments on this topic in both forums and I'm
ready to toss my two cents worth in the pot.
If I were king, here's what I'd do to get my "royal advisors" started
right after I explained the "KISS" principle.
   - Anyone wanting to become an LSF "Sportsman" MUST successfully
complete the current requirements for Level I & II(Contest reqm't
included). Why? First, these two levels do a lot toward producing a
competent sailplane pilot. The competition requirement of Level II isn't
that stiff and at least exposes the participant to competition. Second,
by making Level II mandatory, a pool of Sportsman pilots becomes available
who at least understand what the LSF program is all about and can
appropriately serve as witnesses for those in pursuit of higher levels.
- After completing Level II, the requirements for further Sportsman Levels
should include the current non-competitive tasks in Levels II - V. To
keep things simple (a former LSF Secretary speaks here), perhaps repeats
of these tasks might be required of the Sportsman. My personal opinion is
the XC task of Level III should also be required as it currently stands as
it, too, gives the pilot good introductory exposure to XC.
- For Sportsman Levels IV & V, perhaps a substitute for the XC tasks might
be available but, for Sportsman Level V, both the 2 hour thermal and
traditional 8 hour slope flight should remain. (Note that for some of the
current Level V's - that's the only slope flying they've done.) Also,
Sportsman Level V's should keep the 2 Level II witnesses requirement as
well as that requirement helps promote the hobby's growth by its "if you
can't find 'em, grow 'em" strategy.

Respectfully submitted for your consideration,
   Jim Deck
An "afterward" - for the LSF Leadership, this discussion couldn't have
come at a worse time. The LSF sponsored Masters and the AMA Planning
Meeting for the 2007 NATS re on the very near horizon. Remember that they
are unpaid volunteers and cut them lots of slack while patiently waiting
for their response.

Hi All--

Summer is beginning to wind down and SWSA hasn't had their annual Bent
Wing BBQ yet so here is some info to help you plan an enjoyable day of
flying at Fish Canyon, along with some great barbequed food from Canyon
City Barbeque in Azusa. This contest is open to all RES sailplanes and
rudder/elevator electrics. Yes, electrics can be flown too as long as they
don't have flaps or ailerons. They'll fly the same tasks and landings.
Rules will be covered at the pilot's meeting.

This event will be five rounds consisting of 3, 5, 7, 5 and 3 minutes.
Lunch will be served near the end of the 7 minute round and we'll keep the
event moving while lunch is served. Registration will open at 9:00 AM with
the pilot's meeting at 10:00 AM and the first round to open immediately
after the meeting. Entry is $10.00 per pilot, including lunch. Additional
lunches may be purchased for $7.00 each.

The event notice can be found at
http://silent-wings.org/popoff/BentWingBBQ.htm .

If you plan to attend please send a note to [EMAIL PROTECTED] so we can
get an idea of how much food to order. More info and directions can be
found at the SWSA website at www.silent-wings.org .

We hope to see you for a fun filled day of flying.

On a somewhat related note, I know some individuals have used a series of
variying width white stripes on the lower surface of the wing as a means of
estimating altitude. Obviously this method does not work for very high
altitudes when the aircraft is at the very limits of one's vision.

For us mere mortals however, it might prove useful. Does anyone have a
reference, guide or link to information how one might go about utilizing
these stripes as an aid? Specifically I am looking for suggested widths and
placement of the stripes.

Thanks very much.

Re: [RCSE] Numbered drill bit question

2006-07-24 Thread Dan Borer
I use a 1/16" bit, followed by a drop of thin CA after the clevises and
control rod have been installed. I do each clevis at the end of the control
rod individually, let it cure, cycle the surface through its range of
movement and then do the same to the opposite end. If using a threaded rod I
will then put a drop of thin CA on the threads where they enter the clevis
once I am satisfied with the setup. This all sounds too permanent but works
well and still allows disassembly when necessary.

Looks like the air will be so sweet during the MidSouth that in order to
cull the luckies from the talented, task times are likely to be in the 30 to
40min ranges and landing points will be measured with a micrometer, 1 point
per 1/100 of an inch...no worries though because we have lazer measuring
devices like in tennis matches, so landings points will be reported
  automatically.

Also special devices will be taped to each plane that senses when the tow
hook is detached, telemetry will start special hand held countdown timers
  supplied to each contestant.
(timers will also be supplied lawn chairs and cool drinks).

Pilots will have Hooters girls with big clear fans keeping them cool
while flying, sorry guys only two per pilot.  We tried to get 'mist
machines' to cool the entire field, but it caused the grass to grow so fast,
we'd have to cut it mid day...so that was out.

The banquet will be to die for!  Fried Green Tomatoes, Frickled
Pickles, Ribs and Cat fish fingers.

There is a wayyy outside chance that the banquet will be held on a Paddle
Wheel River Boat that would pick us all up right next to the fieldbut
don't hold your breath on that one. :-)

For SURE, there will be a huge supply of old friends to fly with from all
over the country...that alone will be enough to make it the second most fun
contest this side of Visalia :-)

So what are you bringing to fly?
Supra? Giant? Perfect? Sharon? Insanity? Superior?

[RCSE] JR 6102 TX

2006-05-18 Thread Dan Borer

Hi All--

A buddy of mine has a JR 6102 six channel radio and wants to set it up to
work on an RES plane with two spoiler servos. I assume I can plug the rudder
servo into the Aileron channel to get the right stick to be the primary
control for the rudder. One spoiler would be plugged into the Throttle
channel and the other spoiler could be plugged into any other unused channel
and then mixed to the Throttle channel to get both spoilers to work off the
spoiler (throttle) stick. Finally the elevator could be mixed to the
throttle channel to provide elevator compensation when the spoilers are
deployed.

Will this set up work or is there a better way?

Thanks for your help.

Re: [RCSE] convert this please

2006-01-27 Thread Dan Kitching

Hi Phil,

Under the pressure tab, you can convert kg/cm2 to lb/ft2.
Since kg/cm2 is g/m2, multiply the result by 16, and you have oz/ft2

I have an Excel spreadsheet that I can post as well that does a couple
of other things for electric fliers and wing loading.

Phil Barnes wrote:

The question I meant to ask was how to use the little conversion
program to do conversions that were not already on the menu. Someone
was kind enough to respond off list so I'll repeat the information here;

Click on "options" at the top of the window, then click on
"preferences". Then click on "custom". You type the conversion into
that window and then when you click on "custom" on the regular menu
you will see the custom conversions that you have typed in.

The conversions that you need for the question that Rich asked about are;

1 gram per decimeter squared = .327123 ounces per foot squared

1 decimeter squared = 15.50003 inches squared

I already knew how to do the conversions manually as evidenced by my
earlier post reprinted below:

At soaringusa.com, the ThermicXL is listed with 81.7 dm squares and
36.7 grams/ dm square.
Can someone tell me what that would be in square feet .

81.7 square decimeters = 1266 square inches.

36.7 grams per square decimeter = 12.0 ounces per square foot.

Eventually I want to figure the wing loading at different all up
weights .

1266 square inches = 8.79 square feet.

12 ounces per square foot multiplied by 8.79 square feet = 105 ounces.

The manufacturer must be assuming 105 ounces to get their listed wing
loading.

To check wing loadings for different weights you just need to divide your
weight in ounces by 8.79 square feet to get your wing loading in
ounces per

square foot.

pretty common.)Bigger problems that I see are that the range is limited (though theyhaven't really said just how limited -- but from what I've heard it'ssomewhere between 1000 and 3000 feet) and that if you have a carbon

they work fine.  The TX is a pretty basic computer radio, and there'sonly six channels to work with so using it with a full house gliderwill probably mean giving up some things, but I'll bet they're justthe thing at the slope with simpler planes.
They'd also be nice for situations where you have what looks like agreat slope or site, but it's only a mile away from an establishedclub and so you don't really dare flying there with traditionalequipment.
They need to hurry up and get a 8+ channel system with full range anda more featured transmitter (either that or modules for existingradios.)  It would be like a license to print money ...--Doug McLaren,

Re: [RCSE] Shipping to Canada - WAS: Vender Disappointment

2006-01-09 Thread Dan Kitching
Oh yeah, all the rules. Address must me in caps, and contents must be
listed on the way bill.
Once the package crosses the border, tracking no longer works day by
day, but it's then only matter of a day or two. The tracking# will let
you know that the package has been delivered.

Sorry I'm getting steamed about this, but it's infuriating to attempt to
spend money at a retailer in the US only to be told they don't ship to
Canada "because it's too problematic". It's pure laziness. Refusal to
address the label in caps, and a lack of willingness to spend an extra 2
minutes at the post office to fill out a way bill. Other than that, it's
exactly the same. If you state the weight, dimensions, and contents
accurately, there should never be any issues. When I see people publicly
posting about how "problematic" it is to ship to Canada, it means to me
that there are now 1 or 2 more people on this list that will take that
to heart and be unwilling to ship north in the future.

I've been buying hobby stuff from retailers and private people the US
for over 5 years and have never had a shipment go awry, not once.

Ed Berris wrote:

Dan Mailing to Canada is not as easy as you suggest because the Canadian
customs or mail service seems to have a strong desire to screw with US

to Canada because of this. Delays are not uncommon. Tracing a package is
nearly impossible once it leaves the US. Packages are returned for minute
infractions on Canadian rules.

When I ship to Canada I inform my customers that once it leaves my hands I
assume no responsibility for the safe arrival of the package. If that is
not acceptable to a customer (and I can understand why it might not be) I
just won't take the chance. I'd rather not have the business or an unhappy

Re: [RCSE] A good reason that 6 cells aren't necessary anymore

2005-12-29 Thread Dan Kitching

Hope you knocked on wood while writing that Bill:)

Fact is, lots of folks have killed servos when running higher voltage
packs and lots of folks have used them for ages with no problems. Take
your pick and go with it, but a voltage regulator to keep things at 6V
is not a BAD idea, it may not be totally necessary but it's not hurting
anything being there other than being another link in the chain.

Then again, modern (fast and strong) digital servos don't require the
extra zip of 6 volts anyway. Years ago when all this started, the servos
weren't anywhere near the performers that modern servos are, and they
were all analog. Today's high capacity batteries also suffer very little
voltage drop under a 4-6 servo load.

A voltage regulator insures that your digital servos and RX don't get
too much of a good thing,

Every digital servo that I am aware of, and I run most of them from
JR281's to 8611's and Futaba 9252's, CAN take 6 volts without a
problem. Old wives tale. 7.2 volts is a different thing. But I love
this myth about needing a regulator with 5-cell packs.

I have run 5-cell packs (Nicad & NiMH) in everything from D/HLG to
molded TD to helis to 40% giant scale aerobatic planes for several
years, ALL with digitals of various sizes, with not a single problem.
Run a regulator if it makes you feel better, but it is totally
unnecessary. And even in my big aerobatic planes I cannot tell the
difference between flight #1 and #5 (when I charge).

The very worst thing that you "may" observe is a slight jitter when
you first turn on. Lasts about 15 seconds as the surface charge goes
away.

And to the point about stalling, etc. causing a need for a regulator.
Sorry, the regulator does nothing there. A stalled servo pulls what a
stalled servo pulls, irrespective of a regulator. Most OEM plugs are
rated at 3 amps continuos (means no real rise in temp at that
amperage) which is well below the full stall current for most glider
digitals, and right at stall current for say an 8611 or 9252.

[RCSE] Wanted to trade power system for glider

2005-12-28 Thread Dan Kitching

Hi all,

I have an unused motor, ESC, and LiPo packs that I'm not going to be
using. Perfect for 50-60 sized helis or 40-60 sized aircraft.

Plettenberg HP-300/40/A3-S heli motor (not used beyond a bench test)
Schulze Future 32.55 ESC (heat sink added, not used beyond a bench test)
2x 5S2P Tanic LiPo packs. Combine for 5S2P (8800mAh) or 10S2P (4400mAh).
These packs are rated for 10C discharge rate. I'd trust 'em for 8S
continuous.
I've put connectors on these packs, and nothing else has been done
with them.

Combined new price is over US$1100.

I'd like to trade for a spotless, like new glider. Please no damaged,
battle weary sailplanes, I'd like to trade for a nice plane that I can
fly for a few years (barring a dumb thumb).

Anyone have an extra biggie they'd like to trade?

Thanks for the bandwidth!
   Dan

600$ + insured shipping RTF minus receiver. SA7035 airfoil, 68 ounces all

was this way when I got it and never changed in many full pedal launches and
deep zooms. Please see the picture at,
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=447848.

There are a few other minor scuffs. The worst of these is a small ding in
one wingtip. The fuse has HS-85BBs as do the tips (plug and play). This may
sound odd but the flaps are GWS micro 2BBMG. This is an honest 75 in/oz
metal geared servo which, for my money, is more reliable and centers better
than the HS-125.
I will ship in a good box with careful packing and photo documentation in
case there is a shipping claim. I also promise to go through the hoopla with
the shipping company if there is a claim. Some people don't realize that
only the shipper can do that.

an 18x10 prop in an electric Escape. It's smoother than a Hacker and I can
talk to the people who built it on the phone.
I had some range issues with a UBEC too. Now that I have a little 4 cell

Rethinking, yes, of course! But one of those gizmos that replaces a rx
battery saves a lot of weight.

And yes, form factors when it comes to Li-Ion packs can make them
impossible to use - but check around, there are many brands!

Sensorless Hacker controllers are a blessing, after having used AVeox's

That's not what I heard from the editor of the mag. I heard that the
AMA received numerous letters from members that were tired of seeing
an entire issue about competition. There is a similar issue with
members not liking the AMA facilities and grounds being used for an
entire month for competition which they supposedly received letters
about. So a number of days was cut from Nats this year.

So in one year we almost lost a day at Nats, but shifted to starting
on Friday to keep all the dates and we have lost the magazine
coverage for the Nats.

It seems a growing number of modelers are not interested in contest
flying.

I think that's unfortunate because that's my favorite part about
soaring. And the Nats issue was my favorite issue for the entire
year, now it's just a Christmas catalog of advertisements.

Re: [RCSE] need source for winch turnarounds

2005-09-28 Thread Dan Ahearn
When I first picked up my A-4 turnaround as part of my McCann winch
kit I was concerned about the ability to pull the chute through the
turn around.

Then I figured out all I need to do is take off the chute prior to
the last launch.

Problem solved

All I can say it it works like a hose! I am a very satisfied customer!
