[RCSE] "Okay you guys, step up and be a MENTOR..its your turn to DO something great!"
Hi Guys, Our young guys are our future...But put yourself at their age...did you have cash for a moldie or any kind of competition sailplane? I know you guys are sitting on flyable Superiors, dinged and dented Escapes, Sharons, and the likeyou have some fantasy of 'selling' them but in fact know that you'd never be happy with what someone would give for them...so why not get TOP buck for them? GIVE them to a young sailplaner ! They can't come to the field with out ships..and flying a woodie Aspire or Genital Lady is fine for play but for competing? Look into your basements and your hearts... I can name a few guys who have anty'd wayyy up to get Lee going..and he won Mid South (Junior but only a few points off old guy :-). Post your donations to me, and I'll try to mate them in the right direction...if they need tail boom repairs or maybe a good wing ding fixthat's part of the hobby. [RCSE] "I had to leave the Gateway to Campaign!"
The St Louis guys have done it again! A fantastic two days of soaring...today the air was a lot tougher with the first round a 12min! 10's to follow. She who must be obeyed called to remind me that part of this weekend's trip was to spend time with Louisville to St Louis transplants...so my chain was yanked. Everybody took some time hits, my goal was to get some contest flights on my High EndI was able to get in three rounds and the air changed from one to the other so it was a good test. I love it...its a lander for sure. I'm not using a skeg, but stuck two and slid thru one...77 being the lowest...but I have a lot of putzing to do to get the landing comp tuned. Chris Lee was flying tough when I left and so was Ron Kukral (sp?) Hope their day went great...Me? [RCSE] "My JR DSM 2.4 Radio Was Hot Today At the Gateway Open!"
Eat your hearts out all who didn't make it! The field was a bit icky when we arrived but it firmed up quickly...the lift/sink was boomer all day, pretty consistently, so you'd better have made the right decision...almost NO wind all dayjust thermal action. 6 rounds of 10, Steve Meyer and Chris kept things moving with a little help from winch master Johnny B. It was Chicago Karl all day with the rest of us chasing his landings. But he took a 4 minute bath in like the 45th round and no one gave up anything to let him back in the group. Round 5 and 6 was between Ben Roberto flying the Supra and me flying my Sharon. I held about a 30 point lead into the last round...so it was either do or die. I smegged an 85 landing for no good reason and he pegged a 97but it wasn't enough. No bridesmaid today! Anyone need another LSF5 win? :-) This was one of the best days of RC Soaring contesting I've had in a bit! Hope you can make it out tomorrow. Gordy **It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. I noticed it a long time ago, so I stuffed M&M's inside the back, that kept the wire from chaffing and if I get hungry during a flight I just pop off the battery cover and shake...sort of like a Pez dispenser but where the ammo has a dual purpose as opposed to a dual rate...although shaking too hard does increase the rate of candies dispense, and can affect your scores. I first tried Gold Bond powder to stop the chaffing but it tasted really bad. Gordy I had Buffalo wings in Buffalo tonite..you? **It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. [RCSE] "North Jersey brought out their big guns for us today!"
Hi Guys, Joe and I showed up expecting a couple of die hard's to fly the club contest today, but found about a dozen guys, including Ed Anderson of Syosset NY had decided to join us! All came with their $50 cash just in case they might earn their "I Beat Gordy In North Jersey Buttons". Joe Melchoir hadn't flown his Victory C since the Daniel Boone, so he was more than a bit rusty, however the practice we'd put in yesterday, brought his thumbs up to full speedending up second today...clearly demonstrating why he is the top contest TD pilot in all of Deleware. Everyone seemed to take a time hit or got thrown from the landing spot by rolling thermal turbulence at one point or other. The Tasks were 6 rounds of 8mins with about an 8' circle landing, graduated 10, 20,30,40, 50. At times we had lots of birds to help cue the crowd, but other times it was on your own soaring. CD and current top ESL pilot Steve Lucke was very kind to the rest of us, by keeping things moving and not being too good today. He made a point of choosing his own air, regardless of others clearly working lift in an opposite side of the field. A great guy who worked his butt off to insure the rest of us had a seamless and carefree fun day of soaring. Euro transplant Beat (Be-at) was flying his recently re-balanced Pike Perfect and was clearly going to be the hero of the day, flying some of the best contest flights by far...until his stab joiner folded leaving his elevator locked and one half of the stab making like a spare vertical. He got it down no worries(apparently he didn't know that there was a thin run of those carbon tube joiners, that needed either an inner piece added or a thicker replacement). That knocked him out of the wood race, but he got his Superior going and put in a few more perfect flights. Definitely one of the better thumbs coming up in the ESL. Chuck Robinet is in love! With is Shadow...more than a couple of guys commented to me about how his scores, confidence and piloting had improved since he got his Shadow. Now nicknamed the Shadow-Man! :-) I don't want to leave any of the guys out but the fun was spread around equally..as were the whinning...we me at the lead as usual ;-). I left lots of points in the landing zone all day..and that cost meI made bad air decisions and that cost me...but same for all today :-) At the end, it was Lesik, who put the Polish polish on the score sheet, guiding his Pike Perfect into the top spotJoe Melchoir was second (he had a great caller! :-) and me bringing up a close third. You should have been there! Their site is a park that was originally an airport...in two directions you can reach mountains, there are thermal generators in a bunch of different directions and good visibility in all directions... There is a LOT of open area with only a few Goal stands in one direction to be aware of. Thanks North Jersey! Gordy **Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? [RCSE] What a day for Jersey soaring!
Joe Melchoir, top Deleware TD pilot and Mooney owner, flew it to Lincoln Park airport about 11am and I was there. We loaded up his sailplane into my truck and headed to the field. The weather was good enough for the hawks all day. Light breezes big fluffy clouds. I flew my Sharon and Joe flew an old NSP Victory that still flies incredibly well! Beat Steffen showed up about 3pm, Joe and I were packing up, thinking about beer and steaks, but he begged us to stay, but I told him the only way I'd stay would be if he had a DLG stuck in a 100' pine tree for me to fetchlucky for him, he happened to have landed his the day before in the top of a giant pine at the edge of the fieldso we stayed. After retrieving the model, he dug out his Perfect ...so Joe and stayed for a few hours more to get some soaring in with his ship ;-). Contest tomorrow, hope to see you all there. Hi Steve, All twenty of the scale guys in the USA who 'might' buy that kind of TXaren't. The Futa is there, but in the end, the guys realize that for the two MAYBE four times they are actually going to get to fly that mega channel scale ship, Y connectors will do the joband because of the few times those giants are flown, their owners like your self have very little to do after getting the pilots head to move with the rudder, so having a clean slate mega TX give you something else to futz with, trust me I get it! 2m woody guys had to get 3mins, and in or out 10' circle 100point landing. Unlimited guys 6min same landing. Unlimited guys had to time the 2m guys and the 2m had to time the Unlimited guys. There was just under 100 competitors (6 total :-) Little Lee made his time and made his landing too. Ben Wilson popped his JW Onyx right into lift. I missed my first 6 by a minute but had what looked like my 2.4 system was going into the full landing flap holdsstill made the landing. Second round, two of the 2m's were out with technical problems...and one was short on time, none made a landing. Ben got out made his time but on the way in came in too high, tried to adjust and got blown off the spot by only 50' or so :-). I got out too, got my time but on my way in had those crazy nose up glitches. Nearly planted it after a low altitude stall in to Ed Wilson or his truck! But got it pulled out and landed it off the mark. (Turns out the problem was not the radio but a broken flap wing connector signal wire...and, oh you mean I should have charged it last nite?... [RCSE] Hot information is better than a fixed system :-)
The wise guy answer is the Futaba system doesn't need anything like that. Seriously there has been no known problems with the Futaba 2.4 Fasst systems. There WAS a minor issue with the 6014 receiver locking out in extreme temperatures if left in direct sunlight. The case temperature needed to get to 160. It has been corrected. Actually this is exactly my point about having a personal way to check our installs and systems...everything was okay up tilit got hot. That kind of discovery can happen to any new product and usually gets fixed...but its our models that I'm worried about. Euro trash is getting so expensive, and hard to get, the good ole days of just ordering another one with out letting the wife know are over. Being able to check our system integrity flight by flight is slightly better than assurances that the equipment is good quality. Two separate things actually. The integrity of the equipment design and it being installed in our personal model. That was the reason I asked about the other brands maybe catching up with their own device to check. Too bad its going to have to wait! I don't know if you guys can read, or read the Model Airplane News, or some of the others, but on the back page JR DSM and Spectrum have thrown down the gauntlet, put their systems where their money is..and have set up monthly challenges to their systems. For instanceCal Orr challenge them to send him 40 systems to have on simultaneously, while testing with what I guess is a Spectrum Analyzer and other stuff.I suppose because there has been the rumor about 40 monkeys at 40 radios all wiggling the sticks 40 times per ...etc Anyway, the next one was a heat test...they put an RX with remote into an oven powered up with test gear and found that at about 200+ degrees the case melted but the RX kept on working. Looks like they are serious about this 2.4 stuff and aren't waiting for some to find a glitch...they want to show us, or I should say prove to us that their system really works, not just seems to work in model airplanes just fine. What an expensive and whacky way to show their customers that their DSM system really is working. Got to love fellow sailplaners who also sell radios :-) They must think we are all from Missouri ! [RCSE] Split Spoilers on the AVA?
Hi Guys, I did the split thing on my Super AVAbecause I had nothing to do that weekend in a motel. I have servo on each and can independently adjust or operate themnever have though. There was the justification that the Big Single "blanked the stab". Frankly I wouldn't know the difference because landing a Spoiler ship is an art, not a skill. I can tell you this there have been plenty of times in a contest when I wished I had all of that Spoiler!..or an anchor to drop! ;-). You know what Snoop Dog says in his song..."Split like its hot"...I don't know what that means either, but do it if you want, especially if you convinced it will put you in the winner's circle...otherwise, your time will be better spent practicing landings with the single okay or the split :). Gordy In a message dated 8/5/2008 8:51:16 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I discussed the split-flap thing with Mark Drela a while back while doing the prototype build for Denny's EZ Bubble Dancer: Mark said: ... The other argument -- "the stock spoiler is too powerful" -- is sorta like saying "my Maserati has too much braking power". It usually comes from people who think of the spoiler as an on/off device, rather than something you modulate. About the only advantage of the split spoiler is that it reduces the required elevator compensation. This was attractive in the days of dumb radios, but not now. Small compensation is also an issue with hinged stabs: If the BD had a conventional hinged stab, then it would need about 9-10 degrees of elevator compensation, which would indeed degrade its control power on landing. But with the all-moving tail this is a non-issue. Turns out that our little Lee brought home so much wood this year that it over loaded the pick up! :-) Actually they got home just fine, but talk about a kid that's beaming and a club proud as new poppa's First place Junior trophies in DLG, 2m, RES and Unlimitedthere wasn't a bunch of kids there but he flew his micro heart out and had a bunch of fun too. [RCSE] "Actually Ben IS a Jerk!"
Ben used to be a good guy, but then he started hanging around with his wifethat lead to him doing stuff like running and swimming and biking...so he's seldom seen at the field anymore. But to be fair his personality crash started way before that! At first he was a regular guy...he'd show up with an unlimited ship or a self built Bubble Dancer and he'd spend the day soaring together. Then Bruce Davidson woo'd him to the DLG side sure he excelled at it, but he was really good at flying real sailplanes, you know unlimited and RESbut Bruce is like a Svengali!...all that twisting, spinning and throwing quickly had Ben hypnotized...and well you already know the restbrainwashed into a full blown DLG guy. I knew it was a matter of time before he'd leave Chris' name out of a report on German DLG play. A sad day realized :-). [RCSE] "Brett Farve and Mike Popescu?....Say it ain't so Joe!"
I am retiring from flying this year and so my planes are becoming available Mike ( the old Esteem and Pelican designer ) By the way the Super Pelican made this guy Bordy to change diapers every round at the last contest in Orlando past spring. Sorry to hear that yet another great has decided to hang up his thumbs! For those of you who don't know Mike Popescu, his Grand Esteem and Pelican mark a turning point in our sailplane design and construction. A great contributor, a great guy and a top competitor...Mike was my personal mentor, and has been a best soaring friend since 1997 or so. We competed, broke bread, traveled and even slept together over the years (okay not together but in the same house and motels :-). The planes he just sold were extended span versions of his originals and really did fly as well as molded ships they were competing against in the last couple of years...of course they were under the talented and skilled thumbs of Thermal Wizard Extrodinaire...Mike Popescu! Below is a link to the article I did on Mike and his designs back in 1997. Take a read, you might just learn some history :-). [RCSE] "Light Winds, nice temps in Lansing today,Cal and Ken sneak away with the wood"
Karl Miller AKA Icon Man (now flying a Perfect) decided to head over from Chicago to harvest some wood this morning, it was raining but cleared for a phenomenal day of weather and soaring like we haven't seen in a few months...but Cal P and Ken Bates had other plans Still stinking from my theft of their RES and Unlimited wood yesterday, they got together and worked up a strategy to get some of it back from me today...a fairly genius and diabolical plan for sure Between the two of them they decided to get better landings and time today than I did :-)...and even that OVSS top pilot Karl Miller! Both of us took a zero landing in a round and those guy just stayed steady all day. I got mine on a flat but still stuck nose in. and Karl got pushed off the line at the very last moment by a strong ground thermal...which would occasionally roll thru the landing zone...in fact it was that reason that I came in hot and low...but the ground was very soft and my Sharon's nose took the plunge. There was a lot of good flying today.Larry Storie, Jim, Al, pretty much everyone had their moments of glory and excellence. Today it was a 4, 6,8,8,8...so we definitely got some stick time. I really let my Super AVA down in the last round...dropping 2minseven with the 90 landing, it let Ken slip past me in RES. I pity the guy doesn't own a Sharon and Super AVAwhat fun ships to fly. [RCSE] "I took a quarter off Dave Hauch tonite...You?"
Hi guys! Dave invited me over to his magnificent flying site today to do some soaring. The conditions started out kind of hot but a light breeze kicked in and things got really comfortable. Dave and I put up about a dozen flights each, shooting for 10min flights and of course with a landing tape too ...which led to a landing for quarters challenge! I should have known better, because Dave is an excellent stick and practices a lot too. He hit 95+ landings most of the evening! I managed one perfect 100 dead on the second to finish off a 10min flightno skeg even! I was flying the Sharon, and he was flying the Shadow...I have to tell you I was very much impressed with how the Shadow launched! Dave has an auto-launcher, with is a bit spooky to use at first but you quickly realize that it doesn't make a mistake and the model is really moving from the moment the mechanism decided to let the winch line take possession of the model. I got a chance to peek at his inner sanctum (shop where he builds all your guys sailplanes). ...super tidy, I guess that's why his builds are so perfect! A fun day had by all. Thanks Dave! [RCSE] "A Day to Remember....Flying the High End....Truly a 'Pilot's' Sailplane!"
Tom Kellevang, Jim McCarthy and I played with my new High End today in Illinois...the weather was as good as it can getnot too hot, strong thermal activity which kept a soothing breeze coming and made working the air a little challenging too. Big fluffy clouds with dark bottoms made visibility excellent too. TK was flying his new Icon2, and Jim a Pike Perfect...all of us on the JR DSM 2.4 systems I started the day getting my Super Ava set up again since I'd installed a DSM 2.4 system in it last nite in Jim's basement. Ground range said it wasn't the best install but no Holds so good enough for RES ;-). I began my day of soaring by hand tossing it into thermals, working it out, up and away, then doing it again...I was so happy to be on the flying field that I forgot how sick I was...and still am! I realized I'd over done it when I just about fell over going to pick up my plane! I took a break and then winched it a few times for maxes and decided it was ready and set. So out came my gorgeous High Endthere was a bit of drool from the guys, but I managed to wipe it off the plane and up the line she went. It is a launcher...very fast up the line with a really easy pop ping to vertical and a long wait till it finally hits apex. I worked on trims, mixes etc, then handed it over to Jim for his feelings about ...everything I'd set up. I flew it about 15 times I think for 10's and landingsworking on learning its landing pattern and speeds, stick positions, comps etc. I'm off using skegs for a while again, forcing myself to get control of the model again...so by the end I'd hit three 90+ and on my last "This is the big one!"I landed one second early with the nose nestled on my hat. TK flew Johns at the JR Aerotow and he flew mine too, we all agreed that this is a Pilot's Sailplane, it takes more piloting than most ships and that makes it a bit more fun than the high wing, high dihedral ships...and it rewards you for it. Its beers and steak timehope you guys are having a great Independence Day too! Gordy **Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars. [RCSE] "Hello America! Stand By For News! DP is in the F3J World Fly Offs!"
I have to tell you guys that I am sick todayI picked up a summer cold that's got me lower than I've been in a lot of years, but when I dialed into the F3j World site this morning...things got worse... Cody had taken a zero for landing out..and that slid him off the leader boardand I am totally depressed about it, because in all my time of flying, I have met some great guys, and some great young guys, but Cody is someone that I have come to respect on a level like my own son. He has consistently represented the best in all of the USA Soaring Community...so my heart goes out to him today... and I urge all American soaring guys to applaud Cody Remington and his work, performance and just plain class as a young man. And then I got happy, REALLY happy! The sun shone in to America's bedrooms ...DP is in the fly offs! While it would have been super to have all our seniors in the fly offs, I think its especially neat to have our own three peat F3B guy and F3J World Newbie Daryl Perkins make it! Despite equipment dramas and newbie (okay I get to tease him a bit here) jitters, his teammates managed to keep him focus'd ! I know that the guys in that group are fantastic fliers and I've been fortunate to meet some, even eat lunch with some at the Calgary Worlds, so I can tell you that each and everyone are guys who like to fly model sailplanes and have fun with their friends doing it. But they aren't the types to give a single second to any one :-). Applause all around for all out pilots and team members, they earned every penny donated. [RCSE] Re: Gordy- Logic without limits.....or I couild hae read the article in context:-)
-why are the people who have no interest or participation in e-soaring events on any level- Doesn't take a lot of thinking here. We are alotted just so many minutes of time to do our hobby each month. We chose to spend them doing the kind of flying we like...there just isn't time or money to focus on more than one thing. When E 'soaring' comps turned into motor wars...the soaring guys got bored...if we were interested in motors and their components, we'd have stayed flying electrics or glow. But we have no interest in motors, or even radios...its the soaring that has us hooked, thermals to be exact and the endless hunt for them. The guys interested in motors, got excited about LMR because it played into their interests...a chance to over power the other competitors. When the soaring guys like Bob got involved, the focus started leaning toward more difficult soaring tasks...and that bored the power guys. The few still involved (motor guys) are the ones who yelped the loudest when they assumed that the Zlog Alti Switch was going to butt into their 'powers'. IF they'd have actually read the article, they'd have seen that not one single soaring guy is interested in changing or affecting their 'hobby'. We are instead just looking at ideas for our possible doom (future of no winches, or land go set one up.) One more time thread mates, enjoy your LMR events, decide your own rules, have fun. Power up and enjoy. No contest rules need to even be considered for the use of a Zlog Alti Switch...no beepers or timers or anything else...because other than the test group that Jack is going to try this summer, there's no one planning on putting a motor in his sailplane soon. Why so little interest in Powered Soaring Events? Because soaring guys aren't intersted in motors, batteries, props and gear boxes...and motor guys aren't interested in thermaling at a contest...kind of like watching grass grow in dry weather ;-). [RCSE] Re: Gordy -- maybe not.
Okay guys, the article is about some day when we are too weak and old to hump winches...fields are gone so no room to string a turn around...those of us who will still want to fly TD contests will have to launch our sailplanes some howthe last thing we will ever want to know about is what would be the best prop, the thought of calculating a correct power equation Wouldn't happen for a TD guy, our attention shifts day dreaming about pretty women or a new plane too quickly to have that kind of concentration. Really read the articleguys who love to didle with expensive motors, cool batteries and trick motor controls...can and should continue. I say let them believe that because their electric powered airplanes with big wings and the ability to glide down from thousands of foot of motor run...let them believe they are soaring...its fun for them. However Don tries to make the point that a guy who starts out with an electric powered airplane with big wings is a future TD pilot??? Here's a test to let him prove his point... have any one of his newbies run the motor up to about winch or high start height (400') then make a 5min thermal flightno turning the motor on..-you know- when he gets kind of low, -you know- for 'safety's' sake When the have a motor to turn on, they don't learn to thermal...which is fine, if they are happy 'flying' I say," let them eat er... batteries!" :-) In the year 2424, if the only way we TD guys can launch is to put a motor in the nose of our models, God let it be just enough to get us up to normal winch height..three times...its not supposed to 'fly' our models, its only suppose to get them to the start of the game. :-) Don keep doing what you are doing...we have a few years before electric motors and props will replace high starts and winches. [RCSE] "The Top Pilots Are Sluts and Idiots?"
Brian said it best, the top guys, heck every body reading this forum, will tend to chose the models to fly that they feel best compliments their skills, will give them the best chance at flying a perfect score. Just because the most talented guys 'can' do well with anything doesn't mean they are stupid...they chose the plane that compliments their flying and optimizes their chancesthe sharpest tool for them. To imply that JW or DP or any of our top pilots only fly what is given to them disrespects them on every level.? If they couldn't afford the hobby, they wouldn't be in it for long.? You know DP and you know JW...they aren't for sale...they chose the models they fly and pay for them. Gordy

The Sharon? Where are they in this list? Its not on the list because of its weight...but its a F3J list. Not a TD list, it got off the F3J list because of the need for late evening fast tow times.. Out of all the planes I own, you'd have to pry my Sharon from my dying hands before I'd give it up for TD. :-) Gordy Milwaukee tonite. In a message dated 7/1/2008 2:36:49 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Chris, That's more public info on one page than I've seen in awhile, and you want more :-) I think your analogy to Formula 1 is a good one. I'd bet that 95% of all glider guiders could not tell a difference between the top planes, especially given varying conditions when they would be flying the plane. The old sales trick of hooking up a glider into a thermal and then passing the transmitter is always effective. "Man, this thing flies great!" I've flown many of the designs listed and the differences between each one are not pronounced. A Supra and a Perfect you can tell, but when they are ballasted to the same wing loading it gets a little murkier. The Experience and the Perfect are really close, as is the Aspire (maybe a bit more float). The Espada is slippery, a little quicker in getting back from downwind but it like to be flown slightly faster due to the planform and airfoil. Like I said, the differences are not that pronounced and the decision at the top of the launch is WAY more important than the plane. Still the guys who are there have made their decision on what plane they like based on their own preferences. But it's not like that formula stays true forever. Remember the Icon? The Sharon? [RCSE] Actually, you missed it
In the Year 2424 When we can't use winches or high starts any more...TD sailplaners will not be interested in bigger motors, because we were never interested in any motors. And if you actually flew contests you'd find that the dreaded 'they' don't exist, there is only us guys, pals interested in flying together and trying to do the task well. "They" you know those other guys, not me and you who would do anything to win, would find any loop hole to win.don't exist...if they did.. I would have MET them, by now. They few who got lured by the dark side, hoping to use loopholes to win instead of practice, and study to win, don't. This is the kind of thinking that got 'electric powered sailplanes' where they are today. Guys more interested in the power packages than the soaring part, where the power package is more important than learning to read air, use air and make landings, where the power package is the primary focus in the model. One more time, the only reason a TD guy would ever put a motor in his plane at all is if he couldn't get his sailplane to altitude with any other wayin the year 2424. Lincoln, I'm sorry that you know and fly with so many guys interested in playing the loopholes rather than sharing the fun with friends.,,I guess I haven't flown with any of your flying buddies if they are prone to win at any cost. And by the wayfor the time being we can still use winches and hi starts, so lets not worry too much about your friends trying to use the rules to get an edgewe have a few years to work out the details of using electric motors in the noses of sailplanes, instead of using winches or high starts. Ever hear of kinetic energy? The event will become even more of a power race than it is. In order to coast, after shutdown, from 500 feet to the outer limits of visibility, competitors will put an enormously powerful motor on so that at shutdown, the glider is going very fast. 100 mph would be worth something like 300 feet, and 150 mph would be worth something like twice that. I've already seen a 100 mph electric "glider". So unless you put something in to prevent climb, you've got an arms race. Altitude readings at high speed are going to be all messe up anywya, unless everyone is required to have an officially calibrated pitot-static setup. Or maybe just a long trailing hose? [RCSE] Gordy- Logic without limits.....or I couild hae read the article in context:-)
Or you could have posted me directly to discuss it such a fun topic :-) Its been quite a while since I wrote that article which is more a review of the programmable altitude priority motor cut off switchbut I play this game :-) The context of the article is replacing winch launches...Field are disappearing, guys are getting a bit weary of hauling winch batteries and chasing chute and pounding turnaroundsso if the day came when it made sense to bother to load up the nose of a nice quiet sailplane with a motor and batteries to replace winch launchesand as I state in the article that "if sailplaners didn't need a radio we'd get rid of them, we sure as heck don't want to bother with motors controllers etc. One more time because I know that motor heads who have found a sailplane will fit motors will want to go off on how what they do is good (and it IS by the way) but that has nothing to do with the context of the article...replacing winch launches with electric motor launches. So with a programmable altitude shut off switch, TD pilots could have the smallest and cheapest possible motor/prop/gearbox/controller/ battery, versus electric sailplane events where the motor package is priority. Currently (no pun) electric sailplane competitors calculate, study, and spend to get the ultimate motor power in the time allotted. 3,000' ? 2,000' climbs (not launches) on a motor run is not the 'unusual' for some classesyou see its not electric launched sailplanes, its in your own words electric sailplanes...in fact electric powered airplanes with big wings. Not once did I mention that your soaring events should change, be limited, or pay any attention to my mindless ramblingsall 10 of you in the country participate should definitely continue to power up as you please. BUT those of us who will never want to willing put a motor in our sailplanes, but might have to in order to fly contests due to no room to string winches would still have the same events (well maybe minus dorking, but again considering we could use almost throw away cheap motors, just strong enough to get us all up to normal winch height (okay most of you fell asleep at this point...normal winch height cuz in this future scenario there isn't room for winches any more)...get us lazily up to normal winch height three times (you know in case there is a mis start or a fuse pop's off :-) When I wrote that piece some of us put down a buck as to how many electric powered glider guys would freak seeing as an attack on their power kingdom... No worries Bob...power up to any altitude your want, 4,000' 5000' if you can see it in 5 seconds of motor run...for as many years ahead as you'd like Someday, likely the year 2424, and all the open space is finally filled with soccer goals...and us guys who want to fly with out motors will have to put a cheap, weak piece of crap in our sailplanes noses in order to fly...but the cool thing will be, it will really be man on man. We'll hobble up to the CD tent, plug in our Zlog Altimeter motor shutoff setting every one to the same height...per the CD discretion and we'll launch...all togetherno different that having pre-measured high starts for DLG contests. Cheap, small, disposable...but mostly lite...so that when the motor shuts off, we are back to the same weight we were flight with using only a tow hook. Enjoy your powered 'sailplanes'. No threat to them here! Gordy In a message dated 6/27/2008 7:05:30 P.M. Hi guys, Got a bit more from the field in Turkey. The JR 2.4 DSM systems are working great providing a whole new piece of mind todaypretty much the equivalent to Visalia's Friday chaos :-). On Rich's plane which hit Jim's paw during a launch release and was 'totaled', its back almost ready for combat again! On the stab that blew off DP's Supra Super mega tow, hit a thermal, earned its way off. A stress point at the mount area of the stab for this kind of extreme launch was identified. Again guys keep this in the context of where and how it happened, a fix was identified, JW figured it out prior so his are strengthened for F3J extremes, and one of those is on loan to DPhas something to do with uranium enriched helium filled micro balloons or some such...:-) This is a bit like : ... the kid who when born till age 5 never spoke a word...his parents were concerned but didn't want to make a big deal out of, then one day they all sat down to dinner, the kid took a sip of the soup and exclaimed, "Yipes, that's hot!" His parents totally shocked said to him,'How come after all these years you are just talking now?" His reply," Up until now, every things' been okay." Fingers crossed in any case planes are going to be used and abused...as I mentioned before, this is a whole new level of everything than years past. More later. Gordy **Gas prices getting you down? [RCSE] "Update on the F3J World Plane Inventory!"
Got a note from Ben Clerx, he's got an interesting mix of planes along. Keep in mind guys that there is practice days, a pre-contest and then the Worlds...so a lot of flying goes on there...well in between inter-country soccer tourneys, BBQ's, Karaoke, some barley pop tasting events, and the usual :-)so the models that will actually be chosen to fly from the quivers brought along will be decided considering conditions. DP's Supra earned its blown stab...That NZ coach (JW) borrowed him a new one. Ben has these planes along...I brought 3 Aspires a Shadow and a Perfect SL (borrowed from Larry). He likes the Shadow if he ends up with some really dead air...so guess that should make you Shadow owners kind of happy to see that a world class pilot likes the plane too! Hi Guys, >From what I hear The mood is fun and friendly and optimistic, the facilities can't be described, have to be experienced from all who've tried to explain them to me! First class, state of the art, amazing...etc etc...better than the play ground at a Whatta Burger! The F3J Worlds have moved up a notch from in the general skill levels of years past...where there used to be some automatic shoe-ins for the Fly Offs, there are so many good teams out there from a bunch of countries...its hard to say where the next David Hobby will pop up to take the prize(imagine David Hobby of Australia winning two years in a row...next thing you know Jamaica will have Bobsled Team at the Summer Olympics!)..any way it proves that out there somewhere is a giant killermaybe already a giant himself.DP, BC, RB? [RCSE] "Put more flights on my High End tonite!"
Perfect nite for set up. I got the new plane jitters out of the way the other day, today was calm winds, plenty of lift, and no one at the field. I worked on tow hook location, Diff settings in all modes, landing comp set up, launch camber, camber and trim settings during modes, and of course some landing approach timing practice. This is a very pretty sailplane :-) Gordy **Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars. (http://autos.aol.com/used?ncid=aolaut000507)

Hi guys, Yep I have achieved the near impossible! First Bronze now Silver, will the achievements never stop? :-) For those of you who may not realize that there is another segment of soaring fun out there..yes along side the LSF task fun, is the Canadian Soaring Society's Task program. I am officially in the books of having completed Silver level and now only have to compelete a few simple tasks to move on to...DIAMOND level! First I have to forge an I Beat Gordy button out of lead with the final result it turning into goldwell it seems to me to be about that easy ! :-). Two 60min Thermal Flights with landings within a 5meter spot. A Goal and Return of 3K (should be able to knock that out at Muncie during my LSF 5 X G&R ) Six...yes 6! 60min thermal flights, or 6 2 hour slope flights or 6 30second F3B speed runs (4laps of 150meters). Thought it was gonna be easy right, well guess again! Also need 3000 contest points in contests of 10 entrants min! Oh yeah, and $5 for the Gold Pin. [RCSE] "Don't get F3J? Wonder what the Worlds is all about?" A very in depth read!
Interesting too. Uncle Sydney is the THE voice of world F3J happenings, a one of our hobby's finest writers too. His style puts you there, nothing dry about it, he knows what and who he's witting about...and you will too after reading this long but very interesting read for those who don't get what F3J and the World's are all about. He's been right about who'll be in the Fly-offs, he picked 7 out of the 14... but didn't pick David Hobby to be there for a second time, and winner a second time! >From our Team, he picks young Cody Remington to be there, but has left out our entire senior team! Who are they anyway? DP, Ben Clerx (past F3j World Team member) and Midwest's own superstar, Rich Burnowski! These men aren't going to play, they are going to fly for the titlewith our USA help! [RCSE] "Missed it by this much!" If only Maxwell Smart had a High End!
Killer funny movie by the way! Don't even pay attention to the reviews! Okay - Had a chance to actually fly my High End today! Perfect weather, almost no wind other than that caused by strong thermals moving thru. A bit warm but not bad. Plenty of puffy clouds, and streets too. The winch today was a clubmates home brew with a few years on it, He made it using an outboard motor starter, a 1" diameter F3B style winch, and mono... not much bigger than a Lil Big Winch, but it pulled the High End up with no problems.. pretty impressive for a motor Not much bigger than a coke can! I flew it four times, and Ben Wilson took it for a stroll, so I could watch it fly. Flying a mid wing again is extremely different feeling! The HE's rudder is extremely effective when the ship is in cruise or lift, but almost disappears in sink...pretty handy tool, it really adds to the HE's ability to communicate! Ben fly's a JW, and so I figured he might not warm up to this ship, since its really a lot different feeling than that kind of ship but he figured it out after about a 1 minute of flying and was off working all sorts of different conditions. His comments were equal "wow"...mine too. The ship was described as 'groovy' by some of the big dogs who flew the early very heavy prototype, this one is 135" span at 74ozs so extremely light and agile. Very much like the Supra, reflex it and its a rocket, add 3mm of camber and she floats nicely...one thing that seems pretty unusual is that it doesn't seem to need much more than that for launch camber, the thing really rotates well and is s fast going up the line...the pings are spectacular...without that tendency to 'flop' at the top...she just levels off and heads off on its own. I expect like the Supra, it will take some time to really understand it fully but for nowdid I mentioned its tied with the Sharon for looks? Gorgeous...and 2.4 friendly. Kind of nice not needing wrenches for a change...two piece plug in wing panels. Gordy This is not just another 'good' sailplane, in my opinion this is up there with the top 1 or 2 ships flying today...and I have one :-). **Gas prices getting you down? [RCSE] "World Air Games Poway Report"
Hi Guys, Fate put me in the area and I made my way there...I really didn't expect to be there, have a plane to fly or to have the guys let me play! The weather was fantastic for a big dog pilot contest. Lift, sun, some wind and really fun tasks. Ron Shark and his team work their tails off, doing all they can to keep things moving...the trademark of DLG contests. This was a new challenge but it was met with smiles by all. I am NOT a DLG pilot, I do enjoy it...a lot but my schedule doesn't allow me to participate in it. Easily the most challenging of the disciplines, so very man on man, the tiniest thumb mistakes are blatantly visible to all. Patience, intuition, practice and model set up are soo critical, especially in a crowd of artist/athletes as attend this event. Brazil and New Zealand showed with teams of great guys and great pilots...everyone supporting each other, cheering on not just one pilot but all cheering whom ever does well and consoling those who meet with less luck. There were plenty of 2.4 systems working just fine by the way. Not sure if there was any brands other than JR/Spektrum systems. The format was based on rounds to determine who would fly the finals. Then the scores would be reset for those pilots who made the fly off round. The fly off round was really fun! Each round would end when the first pilot landed. He would be executed and another round flown3 min tasks. A horn would announce the mass launches. In the end there can only be oneI was lucky enough to make it to the fly off roundsbut as a 'DLG pretender" my lack of skill, strength and practice became exposed in short order Those serious DLG pilots went on battle after battle, pilots dropping out round by roundthe last two rounds still to fly...and the sun was set on the horizonand by the time Oleg and Paul Anderson hand done all they could to out last each otherthe sun was behind the hills. Talk about a spectator sport! Mike Smith Bruce Davidson Kevin from NZ Adam Weston Larry Jolly Phil Barnes So many fantastic pilots, who really put their minds and bodies fully into the hobby...each one sensing the smallest bit of energy to keep their models flyingsearching, moving, shifting...finally to return home for another duel. Huge thanks to Craig Allen for trusting me to protect his model through the event and for his excellent calling/timing to help me do a credible job and to keep me out of the serous guys way.. Two nites of lots of BBQ Ribs...and a Corona or two..too :-). And George Joy to guard the no fly zones for almost 8 straight hours! Thanks for you work George...we all knew you'd rather have been flying! As a treat to us big bird pilots, Mike Smith brought out his new F3B ship...it has molded in RADs pockets..and the fuse and wing has a transparent dark blue finish that actually glows with the carbon cloth looking like woven silver mesh under. Good luck to all combatants today and tomorrow I don't think I have ever seen the Oleg more focus'd, or Paul Anderson more determined...but with so many talented and practiced world class pilots I can't put either in a sure thing category with Big Brown this weekend. [RCSE] "Gordy's Done with His CSS Silver...You?"
Hi guys, Finished off the 6th 30min flight today with my brand new used bright Red Sharon...powered by Volz, controlled with JR's DSM 2.4 accuracy. First flight of the model I managed 20mins where it was totally skied, but a huge sink came behind that lift and so ended up short, just picked it up this weekend in Chicago, was Don Smith's plane. Gorgeous and interestingly enough, the same colors as the my new High End! So matching HKM planes. 3 rd launch put it up again and at about 20 again, the air went still every where...but there was buoyancy to work, so just kept it moving in huge flat circles. Brought it in for a landing with the nose in my hat! Got to love a Sharon ;-) The air in Louisville was HOT...and muggy, but thermals were moving through at a leisurely pace...so everyone had a good day. Our little Lee spent his time tossing his DLG with Ben and Bruce. [RCSE] "JR Aero Tow Today???"
You guys should have attended if you want to find out :) The sky is blue, with just the right amount of wind to make the tows go up fast! The thermals began to develop early, so even the 30 footers were hard to see...way up there. I would say that at any one time there was a min of 10 planes in the tow cue...the tugs are extremely powerful, and they waste no time getting right back on the field to hook up the next sailplane. Planes are launching like machine gun fire so there are always multiple ships up at once. The site is a full size sailplane club site, so lots of visible horizon to most directions and the adjoining crops are pretty short at this time. The pilots are hard core big sailplane guys, so they are very serious about their models and flying...there is very little sitting around with this crowd! The Horizon boys are working their asses off, towing, keeping things like air space and landing zones safe and the tow planes fueled and prepared. I learned a lot about the this' and that's of aero tow that I would never have suspected...so a really good thing for me. As much as I would love to own a big stiffy (carbon scale ship), I think I'd enjoy flying the tugs too...but don't doubt for a minute that the tug pilots are WORKINGits no non sense, have a bit of fun on the way downWORK. [RCSE] "30 minute first flight on my new Cularis by Hitec/MPX)
Hi guys, I flew my Cularis today off my winch. Good air day. Like a good little instruction follower, I balanced it on the dots. I gave it a gentle hand toss and as expected, DOINK about 15' in front of me. All I had for nose weight is a 4cell 1250 sub C pack with the cells standing upright beside each other in a row. It was all the way up against theplastic motor mount cup. Once balanced it is now all the way back against the foam cross piece just in front of the servos. The model balances at 4" measured from the trailing edge of the wing, 1" behind the dots. I'm working on my Silver Level Canadian Soaring Task, which asks for 6 30min thermal flights (witnessed). So I decided what the heck, might as well take one down with the Cularis. Most of the flight it was impossible to see the model, blue skies with high thin clouds, and she was up at about 1200' (I know because I have a Picolario talking altimeter) for most of the flight. I have 3/8" full span camber programmed in for thermaling, that bends back to about 3/16" in the air, but worked well...and the usual rudder to aileron mix, camber pump with elevator and as is normal most of the thermaling was done with 80% rudder stick and a bit of up trim elevator...along with the camber. I'll admit I'm surprised it launches well with the all the glass rods replaced with carbon or carbon tubes...and she flies as well as a Spirit Elite 100". The landing flaps are functional too. Very nice piece of foam. I made the tips and ruder and nose cone tape-ons, so that it all fits in the box for storage...likely mine will sit in the rafters for the next few years, but it was a fun project and excellent flying model. Definitely worth the money and for a newbie to the hobby of soaring, easy to build, durable and fun to fly too. Also worth the money for someone who wants a scale looking slope ship! Full house, full flying stab, the wings snap in and the servos plug themselves in too! You can paint it with Krylon if you like by the way. [RCSE] Re: 72 MHz, 2.4GHz, latency and you...
Today I was using a 9303 2.4 system thermaling a Supra at the Syosset NY field, the systems reaction speed didn't help much when my batteries ran out :-(. Lucked out with just a ding or two...but the worse part was I didn't get one of the two last 30 minute flights I need to complete the Silver level of the Canadian Soaring Society. You need 6 30's on a short landing tape (or you can sub 6 60min slope flights, 6 2min precision flights (+/- 2 seconds) with short landings. A 1K Goal and Return too. The air was there but the sink cycles kept killing the flights at 25mins :-(. I wiggled the sticks really fast but it didn't help ;-). This Latency thread is a good one, the more we can learn about the new digital systems the better. At the upcoming SEFF meet (electrics) they have organized a world record attempt of most RC planes in the air at once...in the past they were limited by the 50 channels and Hamm bands but this time they have allowed 40 2.4 ships to join in. Now that is the interesting thing and the part that most fits this thread...why only 40 2.4s? By the way I ran a test today with some Germans who had a UAV system working a quad rotor recon ship...about 1meter diameter ship, likely about 1/4 million+ for the system. It uses 900mhz (just under actually) for control and 2.4 for the video feed back, but fairly strong output. They were very interested to see if it would bother my system or mine theirs...but no effect (according to their data and my Flight Log). [RCSE] Re: 72 MHz, 2.4GHz, latency and you...
One more thing that I discovered yesterday trying to make that 30 all day. My elevator servo stopped working in flight, and I managed to 'land' it three times using flaps to loop it down to flat tall grass landings and once to a soft dirt dork. That Supra is one tough airframe. But in all that, something really important and valuable came out of those 'crashes'. When I did tests using all the ideas guys had used to adapt 2.4 to carbon nose cone fuses, I found that the simplest and 'best' was Don Barker's Sputnik install. The 4 extended whisker routed out behind the nose cone lip at 10-2-4-8 o'clock around its circumference. I tried to make it 'not' work, and tried to improve on it using the advice of -2.4 Techs- and using special 2.4 extension antenna wires. In the end, Don's was as good as it gets...and again simple. The Flight Log data was repeated time after time..and all good. But about a month or so back I flew at a contest in Orlando...calm air, warm temps, 8min tasks should have been a no brainier but for some reason my Supra was not 'flying'. The best I could do was 3 1/2min out of 4 rounds! It just wasn't listening..the funny thing was that the Flight log didn't show one Hold...lots of fades but no holds but I was sure that I was not in control of the model a lot of the time. (never suspecting a dead spot on my elevator motor commutator). I sent a note to the Horizon guys, asking if they could figure out what was wrong with my 'radio'? Of course there as nothing wrong with my radio and that was confirmed by the Flight Log's numbers. I switched to a Pike Giant (F3B/Slope Racer) that I love for Thermal Comps because its so challenging, and the next three rounds where all with in 2 seconds of perfect..one 75 and two 100 landingsversus almost cutting me and my timer in half with two of the previous 4 flights. The Barker install puts the two RXs on top of my elevator and rudder servos which lay on their sides in my fuse. After that I flew the Supra a lot and didn't seem to have that kind of lack of control again but was suddenly seeing numbers every flight of 999! and HOLDs too. I'd contacted Don he confirmed it was crazy that the numbers had changed that much. Something was weird...and it wasn't like the RX's...or their antenna. Yesterday when I my elevator stopped moving, and found that it would stop at a specific point as if it were unplugged..intermittently...and after the third crash, I switched the rudder servo with the elevator servo...I was determined to get a 30...figuring I could get away with a locked rudder (it would stop only about 1/4" off center, but would move if I cycled the stick). Of course I didn't factor in that it might also be upping the current drain on the systemand that's the point where all this is leading to... The 999 readings I was getting were only on the main RX antennas! The remote stayed consistent...and the main was perched on top that injured servo! When I switched servos, the main now perched on a healthy servo..the numbers from those flights were back to normal with no holds! So I am thinking that the servo amp/motor was likely radiating, causing interference to the RX perched on top of it...or if not that the current spikes possibly. A lot to learn about this 2.4 stuff. [RCSE] Re: 72 MHz, 2.4GHz, latency and you...
If you'd all just start using your Talking Timers wheny you 'practice' and have a landing task set up like the zone that will be at your next contest. Its interesting when an RES wooden RES ship like the Big Birdy, Marauder, Grand Esprit or the like, whips up on the entire field of super moldies Keep in mind that houses fly just fine in Kansas without digital servos, computer radios and 2.4 gigglehurts stuff. Launch, find a thermal, stay in it for 10mins and land on the 100 spot. While you guys are looking at scopes the top guys are looking at their model's tails, and using their left thumbs MORE than their rights. Here's a question, can the Flash move his thumb faster than the pulses of a 2.4 module system can reach the surfaces? [RCSE] "Thanks JW....again!"
Hey guys, We lost JW to one of those places where the toilet water circles the other way, but he's still represent'n for us Americans! Doing the right thing, being a friend to our fellow soaring enthusiasts! JW did a lot for a lot of us along the way, and he's continuing to contribute to RC Soaring by helping the guys in NZ get a team to the F3J Worldsthe same any of us would do if we had the chance I'd bet! I had a chance to fly with some of the Les 'r pilots down there a few years back and they went out of their way to get me some soaring in and to help me try for my first LSF4 task...a 60min flight. Good guys all for sure. (Excellent pilots, with mad skills way beyond mine). Its not a huge place and just like here the wives don't allow much in the way of RC soaring spare change to be spent, and as JW points out below their association isn't that huge and so there isn't a lot of budget left to send teams to distant places. I know you've all sent our USA F3J team your beer money, so how about sending a bit of your Starbucks stash to help the friends you haven't had a chance to fly with ...yet? Keep in mind its a pretty small island so don't send change, we wouldn't want it sinking into the ocean before the guys get a chance to fly in Istanbul! $20 from some of us goes a long way toward getting our NZ friends up to the Worlds ... (no one should miss an opportunity to see our Team win! ;-). So dial up Pay Pal and enter some cashIts pretty simple actually, you just type click on Send Money, put in JW's email address ([EMAIL PROTECTED] (mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]) ) and hit enter. (by the way 65NZ $'s is $50 US) I did :-) Gordy >From JW New Zealand is sending its first ever full team to the F3J world championships in a couple of months. The team is composed of Scott Chisholm, Les Stockley, and Sven Zallberg as the pilots, Paul Chisholm as helper, and myself as team manager. Due to our antipodean location, the travel expenses are quite high compared to most other countries teams. The majority of expenditures to travel and compete are paid for by the team members, with a small but much appreciated grant from the NZMAA (New Zealands equivalent to the US AMA) along with fund raising efforts such as a raffle and t-shirt sales to partially defray the large costs for fielding a team at the world championships.
