[RCSE] SWC Scores

2008-02-23 Thread Paul Emerson
Finally got the scores up on the website. Thanks to all and see you next
year!

http://casl.net

PS - on the Open scores it has Cody ahead of Mike for 3rd place, that is
just an alphabetical mistake. Mike took 3rd and Cody 4th after the flyoff,
which was pretty cool if you missed it. Hi-starts, 5 minute tasks, landing
tape... Mike landed a 5:03 with a 96 landing and Cody a 5:00 with a 92
landing if I remember correctly.

That is where I got my Robic SC-707 - $34.95 to my door with the free shipping.

replacing competition requirement with non-competition tasks that provide a
comparable level of challenge and skill development

To re-create a comparable level to a competition there would have to
be a task that required you to launch on a specific day, at a specific
time, regardless of conditions, with an unexpected field repair, and a
gaggle of bozos to sucker you into some bad air, and a timer who may
or may not read the air correctly and give you bad advice, who will
talk too much and countdown all wrong, and stop the timer a full
second late, and at least a dozen peers to watch you launch and land,
wishing the best for you, but most hoping to beat you, and some
playing mind games and/or talking trash to you, and then there is the
added lust for an I beat Gordy pin, not to mention wanting to score
higher than all of your other club buddies, all this after having
spent the night in the back of your truck after driving 600 miles and
slowstick nightflying until 3 AM and you are getting a weird rash from
being out in the heat for three days . . .

The current LSF system is designed for the pilot who wants interact

As far as getting a Level V win from a SOAR club contest. Fat
chance, I have resided that I will have to attend smaller contests

Once again you are missing the point, it is not so much about
changing the current system as it is about adding a separate

the list of tasks. Funny thing is, almost all of those that are
so apposed to any change just happen to be fortunate enough to be
involved with clubs that have regular monthly contests 20 or more
pilots. Maybe if the shoe were on the other foot and you guys had
to travel hundreds of miles and spend hundreds of dollars
everytime you wanted to attend a contest with 20 or more people,
you might see it another way. If I were a new guy just starting
out and did not already know several of the people on here, I
would get the feeling that most of you guys were a pretty elitist
group and could care less about new pilots joining the group. I
know this is not the case, because like I said, I know most of you
know differently but a new guy just signing up on the list would
not know that. Perception plays a very big role in things. We
really need to keep that in mind.

[RCSE] RE: Great Ideas

2006-08-16 Thread Paul Emerson

Not sure if this qualifies as Great but . . .

Mounting pushrod housings inside a tailboom or fuselage:

With a music wire pushrod, hold the housing in place using neodymium
magnets on the outside of the boom. Then hold the boom upright and
dribble thin CA down the housing (being careful not to get it inside
the housing of course), mist some kicker in there and you are done.
You can then remove the piano wire and put a CF rod in the housing if
you like. Works good on all fuses/booms. Some like to add small wraps
of thread or tape along the housing to give the CA more to bite into.
I find on good etched teflon housing this is not necessary, and it
impedes the flow of CA down the boom.

Picture here:

Nice; how about the rest of us submitting their idea-jewels for something to
do. Could make for some interesting reading for a change.

Here's a couple:

On F3x fuses with opaque (typically carbon) canopies, I machine a slot which is
long enough to view one of those nifty battery LED's. The slot is offset to one
side such that just prior to launch I can glance at it and not only know PWR is
present, but where it's at.

I then Goop the LED display to the inside of the canopy. A side benefit is that
technically, even if the canopy departs the aircraft on launch/landing it
remains tethered, thus allowing you to score on that round.

The lead material supplied on most imported F3x aircraft, it seems the
prerequisite is to find the absolute cheapest material produced by mankind. The
awg is poor, and the insulation will depart on a hot day. One might consider
replacing it.

The piddly switches supplied with our systems are average at best, especially
for competition use. They have been known to fail. Simply replace the entire
switch assembly with a 2-pin high quality bullet-type connector used to supply
PWR to small electrics, and your servos will see higher voltage. Add to this
that typical bullet-type connectorship has cycle rates in the 100's, which
rivals the original slider switch.

I've done the same thing with heavy thread.

Drill a hole of the fuse in both sides, where you want to attach the tube.

Using a long upholstery needle, go into one side and out the other,
reverse the needle and loop the thread around the tube as you pass the
  needle back out.

If you are sewing in a tube on both sides, you obviously need to loop both

of them before sealing the holes.

Pull the tubing up tight to the fuse side and fill the hole with baking
soda. Hit it with thin CA, then sand flush.

(I didn't see/read the whole thread, so if someone already suggested this,

  apologies.)

This applies to a translucent fuselage, such as unpainted glass. If the
tube to be installed is one nothing wants to stick to, decide on the
spots where you want it attached and shrink a sleeve of HS tubing at
  those spots on the tube.

Position the tube. Just above it, drill small holes in the fuselage, such

as 1/8, at the location of the HS pieces. Bend a common pin so it can be

inserted into the hole to pull the tubing against the inside of the
fuselage. Remove the needle from a small syringe. Put some quickepoxy in
it. Let gravity help get it where wanted. Put a tiny spring clamp on the
pin. Snip when the epoxy has cured.

weigh in around 31 ounces, and they flew quite well
(for a 2M). People seem to have gotten complacent
about 40 and 45 ounce 2M's. Of course they fly fine...
they're just pre-ballasted. Especially when you're
only flying against other 40 and 45 ounce models. But
remember, a 2M isn't much larger than a HL model.
They're what? 25% larger? Who wants to thermal a 30
ounce HL? Or even a 20 ounce HL for that matter?
That's tremendously over simplified, there are many
other factors here, but you get my point. We can't
build our 2M's light enough.

Mike L's 2M Aegea weighed in at I think about 25
ounces (before the boom broke), and it was probably
the best flying 2M I've ever seen. In the early
morning light lift rounds, his was the only model that
even recognized lift, as the rest of the field flew
right through it and underneath him without even a
bobble.

V-Tails - still... no. The main problem with a V-Tail
is that we all fly differing stability ranges. What I
mean here, is that while I may prefer a less stable
model, you may prefer a more stable model, and a
beginner prefers a ludicrously stable model. Why am I
talking about stability and not CG??? .. same thing
for this discussion. You can't just oversize the V to
be correct in yaw, and expect the model to fly right.
It'll be too stable for me, and maybe for you... but
perfect for the beginner. When I flew Super V's, I
couldn't get the model loose enough. I'd cheat the
CG way back, until I was happy with the performance
and flight characteristics in pitch, and the model
would tuck hard in slow cruise (harder as the speed
increases). Not great for a TD model. S... that's
an indication that the model is overstabbed or too
stable. So, I had to cut the V's down... then all my
yaw stability went away. V-tails are a compromise at
best. You can play games with the V angle to get it
closer, but I've never got one right. They're fine for
a one dimensional model - ala a slope racer, cuz
you're never hanging the model on the wing. You don't
see Drela's design's being V-Tails, do ya? ;-)

The design challenges for a 2M are rather complex, and
this makes it sorta fun. There are many compromises to
be made. A/R vs. Area. Cruise vs. Hang. Cross tail...
or... uh cross tail. (I'm not even gonna mention a
damn V)

I'm going to do a new 2M in the next few months. I'm
not just going to focus on the wing, but on the fuse
as well. We're seeing gains in F3B with small cross
section fuses. I think I can shave some weight, and
some drag here as well.

I've broken up with multiple women in the last few
months... need to do enough models to keep up with the
naming process... ;-)

Possibly Lil Beeotch - we'll see

Re: [RCSE] Water-ski Aerotow?

2006-03-29 Thread Paul Emerson
Meh. My Grandpa claimed that he and his friends once tried this stunt:

Theywould transfer a water skier being towed on a boat toa tow rope dangling from a small plane. This was attempted on the Bourbeuse river in Missouri which is one of that state's most twisted and meandering rivers - it winds for nearly 100 miles with an air distance of only 27 miles, all of it within Franklin County. They also built a ski jump that was only used once -it was toosteep and the first attempt resulted in someone getting slammed into the ramp. They cut it free from it's anchors and let it drift over the dam at Noser Mill.

Re: [RCSE] Supra #42 problem

2006-03-27 Thread Paul Emerson
Dear #1 through #99,

I was within 20 feet of the crash - remember I was out there hunting
for a dropped pocketknife. The plane tapping the wires and landing in
the tilled dust that is desert farm land was softer than any
competition landings I have seen.

I would recommend that the saddle area be beefed up before y'all go

Just because the Supra wing mount didn't survive a crash, doesn't

 hard launches and contest landings.

My Supra will be here in a few days, and I will have no qualms about

[RCSE] Re: Interest in Soaring [Was:] Model Aviation Control Line???

2006-03-02 Thread Paul Emerson
So the question is, what happened to the interest in RC Soaring.

Bottom line: The interest in RC soaring has been replaced by the
instant gratification of the electric park flyer.

Things impeding the interest in Soaring:
1) Need a big field close to home (urban sprawl has eliminated safe
soaring here, I drive 80 miles to fly in peace)
2) Soaring learning curve is higher, takes longer (Electric foamie
learning curve: throttle up, crash; throttle up, crash; throttle up,
crash; throttle up, crash; throttle up, LOOK DUDE I can hover!)
3) Expense: If you develop a real interest in Soaring, the expenses
soon start to add up: Good plane, good TX, good servos = $1500 and up.
Plus you gotta launch it somehow.
4) Intimidation. New guy sees pilots that are soaring $2k worth of
carbon fiber, expresses an interest, and they point him to a 2M balsa
kit. That's how we all started.

Those who truly love soaring will stick with it. The rest will be
shooting us down with their slo-sticks from their backyards.

And as for all the CL articles in the AMA mag: I have been an RC
observer/participant most of my life and I have never ever seen a CL
model in the air or on the ground. Imagine my surprise when cracking
open the mag and seeing 3 or 4 different varieties of the mysterious
CL.

tough tight blowing bubbles. I am still learning a lot about it.

I couldn't seem to get my eye on the spot so hung in all day with 25's
(landings were 25, 50,75 and100 point measured spot) which sounds pretty
bad but the radius of the spot to 25 was 10mm...so you really had to be on.

wing but the speed of the Giant wing and its ability to shoot wayyy out is kind
of sexy :-) I'm not using a skeg, just in case I decide to make my bide for the

Rick Kuburis with a home field advantage ended up victorious using a home
brew secret weapon design, there was no way anyone was going to beat him today,
he was a machine. He was so far in the zone that atone pointhe was
putting Ketchup ona hot dog during his landing.

Rick Eckels used his own formula for scoring the man on man event, which
has something do with sacrificing a chicken and generous use of power
eraser.

We went thru the whole day without a broken line and I don't think we had a
delay between groups of more than ...well just enough time to let the birds
circling to get wayyy down wind :-)

Jim McC came up to join us and had hopes of getting even from our last
meeting here, but a last round of really stinky air sent him back down south
with dreams of next time.
Allan Parsons (yep the I Robot guy) really had his Fusion working on
steroids, some of the best launches and reflex runs I have ever seen with a
bagged plane...it really is one of the top contest ships...still.

I timed for one of the veterans during the last round, he flys a Genital
Lady and I think he hadn't had a round over 1 1/2mins all day, I got him settled
down and he went for a huge launch with a ping at the endhe was light on the
pedal but really controlled his energy and I think it was the highest I had ever
seen one of those balsa birds ever launch..and he even got a ping! Hank is
not 30years old :-) He had been a full size DG owner for a lot of years,
but his eyes and thumbs had had better days, but that last flight he managed
energy and followed the river of air and had it spec'd without a turn. At
just over a minute left, we were talking about how great it was going to be to
hit that 100 to cap off the flight...when a clubmate came shooting across with a
NSP Edge, T boned the GL and shredded it. Both planes were too far out to
be able to judge depth and proximity so no foul on either partthe GL parts
worked their way to Terra Firma and the day ended with a slight bummer
anda great story for the BBQ restaurant afterward ;-)

Me, always a bridesmaid down here it seems. ;-) Had her in the bag
but got hammered with a line tangle and then a late launch and lousy thumbing
:-)

Sure wish you could have been there too!

Re: [RCSE] SWC

I left before the scores were posted today. The first round was 4
minutes and then there were 4 rounds of add-em up with a total of 33
minutes. However things were running behind so they shortened it to 3
rounds of 23 minutes (my numbers may be a little off).

Weather was nice with a little breeze pushing the thermals away from
the field pretty quick and causing a few to land off-field.

The real excitement was a plane hitting the power lines south of the
field on friday. And then an Icon getting fried on the same power
lines today. The icon hung there for a while burning until it finally
burned right through the power line, bringing it down. (both times
cutting power to the whole farm community and getting the local
utility company scrambling some trucks out - neither were happy with
us) I don't know if you have ever seen a plane fry on the wires but it
makes an awesome flash/noise/mushroom cloud of black smoke!
BAP

Today after the Icon cut the power, I was out by the end of the field
looking for a dropped pocketknife when I heard a plane hit the power
lines again right behind me! Luckily the power was off, or this
Cherry-red Supra woulda been BBQ ship #3. It was unscathed.

So far as the Supras go - they fly well, but without the anticipated
miraculousness.

I found the pocketknife BTW.

don't know if you meant it this way, but your post comes across

Instead of looking at these models and these flyers as a problem, why
not look at them as an opportunity? I fly quite a bit at local
parks, having never lived in a city with a dedicated soaring club
(except while I was at Purdue). Every time I meet another person at
a park with an airplane (be it $30.00 on off model, a throttle and
rudder aerobird model, or a guy flying a 3D style ship), I always
introduce myself and get their email address. I always ask them what
channel they are on (and more often than not, they do not know) and
explain that I would not want to be on the same channel as them and
it cause their model to fly improperly.

See, this is what I don't understand about people who think they
other guy is going to cause a frequency problem for them. It goes
both ways. A modeler with a parkflyer does not want his pride and
joy to be damaged as much as we don't want our super moldie to be
damaged. That 2K we have in a moldie very well could be the economic
equivalent of what a college student has in his 3D fomie.

OK, back onto constructive things. Unfortunately, I moved away from
Indy, but I had built up a network of about 25 pilot's emails
addresses. I was sending out an email about once a week to let folks
know when I and others would be out at the field and if I would bring
my high start along. Some folks used this group to start indoor
electric flying, and a few of the pilots actually started flying
gliders. One of the new pilots I tried to help out actually attended
the Nats for the first time this year.

So instead of looking at park flyers as a problem, why don't we
invite them into the fold? I flew both my LSF 4 1 hour flights at
this park along side park flyers flying GWS planes and 3D planes.
Our hobby can and does coexist! It just takes a bit of working
together. A positive attitude can and does go along way. Treating
parkflyer pilots like an equal (regardless of the type or cost of
their model) will go a long way towards building mutual respect.

 Off soap box….

 Ryan

The air can no longer remain attached to the wing and it tends to break off

Did they do this right off the ground or use a dolly?

I recently purchased one of these big birds, and was hoping someone
out there in RCSE land could answer a few questions:

1) CG? (I know it is a huge pain to put this monster together and
measure it, so don't bother answering unless you happen to have it
written down somewere).

2) Towhook position?

3) Launching a big glider tips? (perhaps also an XC pilot could answer this)

This plane is impressive and I have invested a lot in it. I am
experiencing major maiden flight cowardliness.

Even if no one answers the maiden will be this Saturday, weather permitting.

MVSA joined the OVSS series last season, and this season was their first
attempt at running their contest in traditional OVSS style, seeded man on

month, and working countless hours during the week at my business to try to
keep up. June is so freekin' crazy, I am so glad we moved the SOAR OVSS
contest to September. I had plenty of reasons not to go, but I am sort of
crazy about this hobby, and when it comes to OVSS seeded MOM contests,
well... they are hard for me to miss because I enjoy them so much. Even as
I worked through the day on Friday I wasn't sure I would go, but at the end
of the day I threw a couple of ICON's, toolbox, clothes, and my winch in
the back of my truck, just in case MVSA needed a spare. I got on the road
at 8:22pm and was in bed at the hotel in St. Louis by 1am.

O'Fallon sod farm and the MVSA bring back memories. In 1999 the Gateway
Open was my first away soaring contest, the first I had been to other than
a SOAR club contest. I entered as a Sportsman, and I was flying a Stork 1
with JR radio gear. That weekend back in 1999 I had my first contest wins,
actually back to back Sat. and Sun. and the weekend overall for the
Sportsman class. Mark Nankivil, CD and my SOAR club mates all declared my
Sportsman cherry was broken that weekend.

When I arrived at the field it was as beautiful as I remembered it, tightly
mowed turf that looked more like carpet than grass, wide open flying with
the Anheuser-Busch farm bordering one side that was the ultimate don't
land out zone. Eight winches lined the field with the batteries backed
up with a generator. Nice setup. The new popoff / line break rule was
effect here as well, except that the penalty was upped to 120 seconds
because of the longer task times flown. Runway landings, haven't flown
those in awhile and they were fun on the turf. Marc Gellart, CD, started
the day with a 11min task, and flew 13min tasks for the rest of the
day. Big air all day, cycling big sink in between. A couple of rounds in
I asked Marc if if might be better to back the task times down to 10 so we
could get more rounds in, (because we were all maxing) but Marc kept to his
guns and he was right, the day overdeveloped and there were some massive
burials. I was in the first group and got caught in a burial with a number
of good pilots, we were sent back 2 entire flight groups... it was
probably Brian with that AVA. 8-) Flyin' Brian put on a show with that
AVA, he was basically limited to a downwind game and he smoked us all
bad. Not only did he win, but the margin was huge. He had to make his
landings like everyone else, he showed everyone that he knew his model
well. I was walking off the field and someone from the pits asked what it
was like for an ICON flier to be beat by an AVA, I replied that if felt the
same as any other model beating me, but Brian earned it and I couldn't want
it to go to a nicer guy.

Karl Miller and I flew for an hour or so post contest on Saturday testing
out different parts of the expansive sod farm, I knew we both were thinking
about Sunday. Richard Burnoski and some of the SOAR southsiders were F3J
towing a huge 4m Thermik XL, ROG style! A group of us went to a great
smokehouse for dinner and stuffed down ribs and beverages.

Sunday brought on another great day of weather, and a few more pilots in
attendance. You really had to make the correct choice of where you were
heading off launch and commit to it, and specking out was easy. Choosing
unwisely placed you on landing approach in less than 3 minutes. Marc
started the day with a 9, and went to 11's for the rest of the day. The
flying was very competitive and not a lot of movement in the top two flight
groups during the day. This is the second OVSS contest in a row that once
the last flight was flown that the pilots in that group all congratulate
 each

Re: [RCSE] Re: top or bottom driven ?

2005-06-22 Thread Paul Emerson
I recently setup top driven flaps and noticed two things:

A little trickier to setup, especailly if there is a secondary TE spar
and the servos are mounted to the servo cover (are they all this
way?).

The benefit of the top driven is the linkage is pushing on the fat
part of the horn, instead of pulling on the small end of the horn,
which may reduce the stress on the horn when you drag the flaps across
the rocks on landing ;-) [called desert skegs here in Arizona].
But this benefit is minimal if you have good horns.

I would go with bottom driven if I had to choose. I really would go
with RDS if I had better building skills and the parts/plane to do it.

The name is Martin Hepperle he has a nice article about drag and linkage
 http://www.mh-aerotools.de/
 Direct link http://www.mh-aerotools.de/airfoils/linkage.htm
It might seem small but with the small differences in todays models the drag
 is very important.
Might not be that important to a slow TD model. But for F3B/F on top
 level

The linkage on the Superior/Brio is not super. There are solutions that are
much better but most of them with more drag. But it is hidden and gives and
drag advantage when flying fast (and also zoom). It is offcourse up to each
customer to build a better linkage. Personally I change out the flap horns
to more secure ones in 2mm carbon (because I land VERY hard). It comes down
to that Samba wants a ready solution that works and with small drag.
Customer just screws the horn in the correct angle and all is set to go (or
atleast the customer will ahcive the 90 degree flap etc. without reinventing
 the wheel).

What gets better mechanical advantage, top or bottom

My vote goes towards bottom driven.
I can always get the throws I want, easy to set up and adjust,

[RCSE] Receivers Tested

2005-05-09 Thread Paul Emerson
Is there a way to test the quality of a receiver using some kind of
electronic measuring device - and has it been done?

I am looking for what's best and want to know if the data is available.

The reason being is all receiver data I have found is wholly
subjective - X brand is better, I never had a problem or X brand
receiver has the best range I have ever seen.

Sometimes these praises come from manufacturers or distributors and
which can further complicate the truth.

Field range tests are dependant on so many variables that the what
works for you theory is not very helpful to anyone else.

Has anyone ever sat at their workbench and measured in a controlled,
quantifiable way? Who's got the tools to do so?

Thanks, Paul

[RCSE] Hobbico Frequency Checkers

2005-04-21 Thread Paul Emerson
You know what would be cool - if you took one apart and integrated it
into your club's freq board, so each board slot would have it's own
LED light indicating if it was open or not (but do NOT use it as a
subtitiute for putting your card/pin up there). Shouldn't be too hard
to wire that up, and cheap too.

You could also integrate the antenna (or a custom long range antenna)
and a solar power source on top of your freq board and have it always

Re: [RCSE] fuselages radio range, Antenna Stuff

2005-03-25 Thread Paul Emerson
friendly curiosity

I thought RX antennas were tuned to a frequency by being a specific
length. So wouldn't adding wire put it out of tune? Or is more wire
always better because it has more surface area to receive?

Not even remotely an engineer, Paul

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

What has been discussed here is the Antenna. If you look at different
Receivers, you will find that they will have different length wire for a
Antenna. Some receiver have coils on the board going into the matching stage
of the receiver. This is where they match up the Antenna to the first stage
of Amplification. Some just go into the matching input and there they are
compensated for. So just looking at the wire and adding 1/2 or 1/4 the
length to the wire onto it and thinking your doing things correctly, your
wrong in that respect. But just the fact that you are adding wire, that is a
good thing. The better the receiver can see the Tx Ant. the better it works.
Just like what Gordy say's. No signal no movey :-)
If your Fuselage is made up with carbon tube or a fuse that has carbon
weaved in with Kevlar or Fiberglass its going to bock the receive signal by
some degree. Just think of it as sliding your receive Ant. wire down a
copper tube. It won't receive much, but if you have some that dangles out
the end it will get more signal maybe enough to do the job. Its not at a
certain wave length that has to be there to work. We are talking Receiver
now. Transmitters is another story. The RF signal from a Transmitter
travels at the speed of light. It is crossing the receiver wire Antenna and
is creating a small AC voltage. The more wire you have the more voltage is
 being created on that wire.(SIGNAL!!!)
You will get to a point that the resisents will be to hi to be over come
by the voltage created. We are now talking Long wire!! Transmitters on the
other hand have a different type of problem with the length of the wire. If
its not tuned correctly to the proper length there is a reflected signal
going back to the electronics from where it came from. This reduces the over
all output power to the Transmitting Ant. The bouncing back signal is out of
phase with the one coming out of the electronics. It cancels it out by a
small amount or and can damage the output of the transmitter if its a large
amount. Most people remember about the Tuning of a Antenna and about the
reflected part back when CB radios were the in thing Good Buddy A bad
Ant, open or shorted coax would burn up the output circuit.
I just add wire to the receiver Antenna and just let it extended out the
back. Longer is better. Problem solved with carbon fuselage Free info here
no Lab expense required. Just my 45 years of experience working in Radios
for a living with some EE Collage studies, Trade School Grad from Devry, and

They say that common sense is uncommon and I am as guilty as everyone else
in this department, so like everyone else..I went in search of 'excaliber'
the 'better' brand RX for use in my Pikes.

The Pikes have the Carbon Kevlar burlap weave fuse that has become so
popular and causes us to have to get our antenna's away from the fuse, not
 just outside of it.

I was searching and trying all sorts of RX's... Some said, oh this brand PCM
has no problemswhich of course means that the servos don't move when the
RX is not getting a signallike non PCM RXs...the condition is
masked...and that works well enough to win contests and keep the model safe
for the most part...but it doesn't 'fix' the fuselage from blocking the
 signal.

I stopped searching when our number one radio guy said to meGordy
regardless of the components and how they are glued to the board in a trick
receiverif they don't 'see' a signal they don't have nuthin to work
 with.

The Fuselage blocks the signal, the fuse doesn't interfere with the RX. No
 signal no movey :-)

The three choices which include 'hold' and programmable hold in the Shadow
 are a BIG deal.
When I had 14mins left on my New Zealand LSF4 one hour task and my Tranny
started beeping, we attempted to do a quick charge, hoping the model would
just float around for 10 seconds or so...but no dice as soon as I turned off
it would go into a total death spiral. Hold function would have been a nice
 feature there :-)

No receiver can think things up by itself, it just follows orders and if no
orders get to it...well you get the point. :-)

Re: [RCSE] Rare earth magnets as wing retention devices?

2005-03-03 Thread Paul Emerson
Good point. It is overkill, and as soon as the magnets are separated a
little bit, they lose most functionality. Also remember that these
magnets are (relatively) easy to slide apart, so if the plane part in
question is sheard off - it will just slide away. Their real force is
felt when separating them in a perpendicular fashion.

I have been toying with the idea of using them as canopy hold-downs,
but will they affect the componants in proximity to the magnets (RX,
servos, etc . . )?

Again, I have used them on a 100 3 piece, lightweight sailplane wing.
But I did use a little tape too - to cover the gap and relieve my fear
of there being nothing but magnetic force holding them together.

Now that we've discussed this at length, has anyone noticed that the

Thus, to make up for the exponential drop in force when displaced; the force
when attached must be over designed. Possibly leading to other limitations
 which must be accommodated.

 Just a thought.

2004-10-04 Thread Paul Emerson
Could someone in CVRC post the scores to this list? In text or as an
attachment . . .

Had a great time - my first (and now my first annual) trip to Visalia.
The CVRC guys put on a great contest, the Sat. BBQ was outstanding,
the winches long and strong, the field was unusual to me as it had
grass and we don't have that luxury here (except for the SWC), nice to
meet pilots from all over - and Gordy who _is_ from all over.

Re: [RCSE] Is an LSF# - still an LSF 'Task' if you use electronic help?

2004-08-23 Thread Paul Emerson
This argument is akin to the one I had with my father about the
virtues of fly-fishing vs. bait fishing. Let me paraphrase his
(somewhat vulgar) assessment:

Looks the same on the plate and looks the same in the crapper.

Or as I would like to put it:
Level V is Level V is Level V.

Is the windrifter low tech?? They are just new on the market here.
(just kidding) I don't know of anyone who uses 'aides' down here. No
skegs, varios etc. Not many Level V's either. :))
Wow Cal - your signature line is longer than your message.

How about that for low tech?

downstate later this week.

I know I'm a week late for all the big events that's how my job
schedule works out.

Re: [RCSE] Looking For Digital Camera

2004-06-16 Thread Paul Emerson
For photographing Soaring action, I would make #1 the shot speed. Some
digital cameras have a noticable delay from when you press the button
to when it takes the picture.

So when Gordy is DSing the rotor on a parked minivan- You might miss
the shot where it goes through the windshield.

I have an older Sony digital camera and the delay is annoying when
taking picures of my boys - by the time the shutter clicks, they have
run off.

If you find one that is quick on the click, let me know. The boys will
wonder when they grow up why I only have pictures of the back of their
heads.

 Pat,

Set a price cap and get the best camera that you can for that price.
 Consider in the following order:

 1. Resolution - in RAW megapixels
 2. OPTICAL zoom range (digital zoom means nothing)
 3. Media format (Compact Flash is the cheapest - but that's changing)
 4. LCD Size + features such as does it swivel to allow you to shoot from awkward
 angles?
 5. Battery type /capacity -- BTW proprietary batteries are not extremely expensive
 if you shop around.

 You may also consider:

EASE OF USE!!! - Owners manuals are available at the manufacturers website. Physical
 size / Weight
 Focus range (macro)
 Flash power/modes (redeye reduction...)
 Connectivity (USB/FireWire/Video)
 Modes (Movie/Scenes...)
 Image Formats
 Playback capability
Expandability - auxilary lenses and accessories

 Use the web to research.

 http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/
 http://www.steves-digicams.com/

Cruise the Yahoo forums for the SPECIFIC camera you want to find out what people
like/dislike about the cameras you're considering.
For instance you'll find a lot of griping on the Nikon CP5700 forum about low light
 focusing.

Once you've chosen a camera, you can search the web for the best price. Merchants on
Ebay are GREAT - just be sure to check feedback!
Watch out for the Broadway crowd!!!
BH photo is a reliable medium-priced mail-order merchant that you can ALWAYS trust.

If you have any more questions and want to ask direct - please do my friend.
BTW the 5700 is an AWESOME camera, but is a bit delicate.
I use a Nikon CP4300 to do what you are describing and it's pretty cheap for a 4 MP
 camera.
Probably adequate for your needs and you can pocket a bunch of money.
I've got lots of pix on my website: http://www.msh-co.com

Of course I use a D100 for the serious stuff.

 GOOD LUCK!

 Mark

Subject: [RCSE] Looking For Digital Camera

 Hi Guys,

I am in the market to buy a digital camera and was wondering if you could
give me any suggestions on what to look for. My price range is in the
$300-$600. My primary wants are to be able to take pictures of planes and
pilots at the slope and thermal field and to be able to take detailed
pictures of planes I may want to sell on eBay and RCSE etc. Any help will
 be
 greatly appreciated.

 See Ya,

 Pat
