Subject: Championship flight at the Nationals

I know there are many flights that allow pilots to achieve top ten finish
at the US Nationals, but one flight in particular should not go unnoticed.
Personally I was bouncing around in the upper group after, hitting a very
poor landing earlier in the day, knowing my fate was sealed. I was calling
air for Cody in the previous flight group, my back to the winch launch
line, when I heard a very high speed flutter by some competitor on launch
in the next group. I turned, expecting to see a model that I had seen
flutter numerous times, and much to my surprise...it was a Pike
Perfect...and Peter Goldsmith was piloting. I said to Cody I think he just
fluttered an elevator...yep...I see flaps going in and out. And this was a
National Championship flight, last round, and Peter was sniffing around a
top spot. It's the last round thing which all competitors know all to
 well.

The air was no gimme, with 30% of the flight times not being achieved.
After Cody landed I said, I've got to watch this. This appears to be a
REAL championship flight! Pilots in Peters group were not happy, many
falling out, yet here he was and his PERFECT ...appearing to be guiding
this object...barely in control...flaps going in, flaps going out...oddly
circling..appering to have half flap in all the time...you know...no
elevator, hunting, falling, rising...maybe 5%-10% control! No one on the
ground knew what was really wrong he had actually blown out on the
over zealous launch and was hitting a well timed thermal, the elevator
servo, and BOTH aileron servos... yet I heard the beep, beep, beep of
Peters digital trims being pushed to the max, trying to urge the PERFECT
to do its job. So here was the PERFECT, coming up to 9 minutes...all other
competitors in his group had fallen from the sky, and Goldsmith was
inventing a new class...F.R.FLAP RUDDER! And getting his time!

Then it appeared there was trouble as the model kind of started galloping
around the sky below 100 feet, trying to set up for landing, the
controlling became more difficult...that ground thing appearing in its
future, spot landing, all coming into play. Flap rudder has its
  limitations!

No he didn't get his landing, BUT he DID land within the field boundaries,
overflying the slot by 25 seconds (10:25) and qualifying the flight.
Amazingly, we later found out, had WON the group! Most others would have
tried to land the injured bird, and probably crashed it, but Peter hung
tough, literally a National Championship position on the line, his years
of aerobatic training coming into to play. As our modern day computer
mixing radios were not up to the task, it was in his thumbs, his mind, and
his judgment that was getting the job done. Yes, I know Daryl had a wild
one with a blown out stab flapping in the breeze at the Worlds, but at
least there was some assemblance of order...all servos were working!

This flight secured his 3rd place overall National finish, and will be a
flight remembered by all who witnessed it for a long time. When we looked
over the PERFECT on the ground, the culprit was a nylon geared elevator
servo that had stripped from launch pressure...the elevator kinda flopping
around, and then noticing that even the control horns on the aileron
servos were broken and floppingYes this was a National Championship
flight. Peter was giddy after the flight, also stunned and amazed at
what had just occurred. We stood there dumbfounded, looking at his wounded
PERFECT, basically agreeing this can't fly. He won 3rd
overall...AMAZING!!! I just had a moment to reflect on this Championship
  flight! Well done Peter!

Some interesting first time team reflections as I awaited my name to be

Subject: [RCSE] Icon2 First Flight Reports

Well the weather finally cooperated and we flew the prototype Icon 2 on
Sunday 3 Feb. This is a big airplane, 1,258 sq in, 150 in span. Radio
equipment consisted of my trusty Futaba R148DF receiver, JR DS368 rudder,
elevator and flap servos, and JR DS168 thin wing aileron servos and a 4
cell NiMH AA size 1700 mah battery pack. With about 3 ozs of lead in the
nose the prototype came in at 79 oz ready to fly which put the wing
loading at a hair over 9.1 oz per sq ft. Weather was heavy overcast, cool
for Arizona (52 degrees F), very light wind. Field elevation at our
flying field is 2500 ft MSL. A standard 12 volt winch with retriever and
250 lb test braided line was used to launch the airplane. Distance from
the winch to the turn around was shorter than normal, about 170 meters,
due to the need to work around some grass sprinklers that had been running
all night. We elected not to launch the airplane for the first flight
using the winch rather than risk damage during a hand launch. The first
launch was spectacular to say the least! Using 10 degrees of camber with
the tow hook about 1/8 of an inch ahead of the CG and moderate hold back
on the winch, the airplane climbed absolutely vertically out of the
launcher's hands. The launch was straight with slight wing bend so I kept
my foot on the winch pedal through the climb and bucket. The zoom was
good and overall launch altitude was much better than normal considering
the shortness of the line and lack of wind. While I didn't have my data
logger installed for the flight I would guess the launch altitude at
around 700 feet based on previous eyeball calibrations with the data
logger. The first flight was spent checking out controllability, elevator
trim settings, CG location, crow (butterfly) settings, etc. As a result,
I wasn't really looking for lift and, given the weather conditions, didn't
expect to find any lift. In spite of that duration on the first flight
was about 8 min 50 sec. The airplane slowed down very well for landing
with no tendency to fall off on a wing. During the course of the day we
put a total of 7 flights on two airplanes (my prototype and a
pre-production airplane)

My general impressions regarding the airplane are as follows. I was
surprised with how nimble the airplane is in flight. This airplane
doesn't exhibit the wing heaviness of other large sailplanes. Roll
control and general flying qualities are very similar to the Pike Perfect.
Secondly the airplane is responsive to rudder. Using coordinate rudder
and ailerons I was able to perform some very tight (about 3 wingspan
diameter) thermal turns. When forced the airplane will tip stall but
recovery is quick. We intentionally spun the airplane and again recovery
is quick and hands off. As you might expect, the airplane has great
legs and can really move out if you're looking for lift. While we weren't
particularly searching for lift on Sunday, we did encounter a few very
light patches of lift during the day. The airplane seemed to signal these
well and a couple of tight turns in the lift produced solid climb
indications. Our focus this last weekend was verifying structural
strength and general airworthiness. All launches were performed pedal to
the metal on the winch. Wing bend never approached any areas of concern.
I am looking forward to doing some more serious thermal flying with the
airplane this coming weekend and do plan on flying the airplane at the
Southwest Classic Contest in Phoenix February 16 and 17. I am pretty
impressed with the airplane.

Hi all,
All tree stories begin the same way, win this contest, win, win, one more
extra turn then the trees jump up and grab your plane. After some @#^^*
words I realized my $2000 girlfriend (the only girlfriends my wife let me
have), landed out of sight in a tree.
Well, mark the plane (brand new Pike Perfect) my timer (and wife) and I
start walking, looking for a green plane in a green forest..I was half
sick to my stomach after all my brain waves explained to me there is no
way this plane would be OK. My wife Leanne tried to calm me somewhat. I
used my radio to wiggle the sticks hoping we would hear servo noises.

We did, Leanne did. Over here! she yelled.
I was about 20 feet off to the left of the tree and my wife was right
under. Honey let me turn my radio off. I would like to look at the
glider and see what needs to be done. Do you see any damage?
By this time my wonderful wife was already half way UP the tree. She
lowerd my Pike down to me. As I checked for damage my wife needed help.
Can you help me down first? she asked.
What a plane, what a wife (I hope, I have my priority right!) What a wife,
what a plane. No damage on ether. My wife rescued my girlfriend...is
there anyone else who can say thatI love my wife.

[RCSE] LiPo's on a Plane

2007-12-29 Thread Peter Klemperer

Hi,

A while back someone was asking about policies for taking batteries on a
plane. Seems the DOT is clamping down a bit on the number of
batteries we're allowed to carry-on:

In summary:
* Any number in devices (e.g. in your cell, laptop, etc.)
* Loose batteries not in devices must be in a plastic bag in the carry-on
* 2 loose only per passenger

That's my understanding anyway.

Cheers,
Peer

Re: [RCSE] Coroplast source

2006-03-29 Thread Peter Jensen
I'm not in the same area, but would be interested in any off the wall
ideas you get. I've found it at sign stores in Texas before, but you
have to find the right sign store because many aren't willing to sell
out their raw material. 4x8 sheets of the 4mm? thick stuff (political
signs) typically ran between $15 and $40, with the actual cost being
less than that. If you have a TAP Plastics local they might be able to
source it.
The new hurricane shutter material that's being used for Habitat For
Humanity houses down here in FL is a really thick (5/8 inch?) corrugated
plastic material that's lightweight, not wood, and easy to store for
long periods. This would be a bit overkill for anything but an airline
box (and arguably underkill for a serious shutter), but still useful.

Don't forget to reference Ben's design:
http://thelocust.org/soaring/boxen/

Make sure any box you make looks at least as good as this one:

Re: [RCSE] Hand launch Gyro

2006-03-05 Thread Peter Salomon
While many top pros arn't using gyros I have found it an easy way to add
10ft' average height to my launches. (measured with a ram2 altimiter).
Another benefit is a gyro can really save you from a hooked launch. I think
for a begining dlg thrower they are a good investment. you don't need an
expensive one the MPI gyro is under $50 and works great right out of the
box. with the case off it's pretty light I'm guessing 5-7 grams?

just my 2 cents

[RCSE] 12V supply/optima maintenance

2005-07-15 Thread Peter Jensen
  I'm putting together a 12V multi-purpose supply for 90% home and 10%
mobile use. The magic field box thing advertised in the latest
Model Aviation would probably work fine, but I already have several of
the individual parts (eg. 12v to 120vac inverters) and don't want to
pay that much.

I've heard that I could just use a normal big battery and cross
float it with a power supply with some proper diodes to protect the
power supply in the event of a power failure, but I'd rather have a
slightly more elegant and idiot-proof solution that also allows me the
ability to charge while driving if I'm mobile. Also, there are
concerns about the maximum charge voltage for the batteries I'm
interested in using. Perhaps someone here has had similar
requirements and can help me out.

The two items I need are a battery and some sort of
charger/maintainer. I've heard good things about the Optima Yellow
Top AGM battery (but could easily be swayed elsewhere) and have no
idea what I want in a maintainer. Archive research suggests several
devices people have used for these batteries in winch operation, which
would be similar in discharge requirements to mine.

Why:
  * I'm a ham and would like the ability to operate on emergency power
for a while (mostly just 2m/440 stuff and handhelds).

  * I live near the coast in Florida. I don't mind a few days without
power, but my laptop batteries don't even last enough to make it
through one DVD. This annoyed me a lot last year.

  * I use digital cameras and sometimes want to charge batteries en
mass while on the road. I'm also thinking about getting some
strobes that would run off of a 12V supply and would prefer not
to use my car battery. This reason (more than the others)
drives me toward a larger (i.e. car battery size or so) setup.

Requirements:
  * 12V system output (thinking an Optima yellow top battery might have the
right combination of design and capacity)
  * entire system should be at least luggable, probably with a little
cart
  * good amount of longevity; I don't mind battery degradation, but
it's nice if it would last for a few years with minimal use
  * completely automatic charge control supplied by a 13.8V source
  * graceful failover from mains or supply power failure
  * relative safety (this will be inside a dwelling, not a garage,
and although I don't have a meth lab in here, a properly handled
lead acid battery probably pales in comparison to the properly stored
numerous LiPo packs and misc other junk I have in here.)

I can handle the fusing and switching necessary, but I really need
suggestions about a good solid charger/maintainer, as the market seems
flooded with a variety of devices. I've read other posts in the
archive close to this, but none that really answer my question
completely. The BatteryMinder from VDC would do almost everything I
want but requires a 110V supply. The BatteryMinder Solar sounds like
what I want:
http://www.vdcelectronics.com/batteryminder_solar_15a.htm , but it's
not clear whether I want to power something like that off of one of my
fixed 13.8V supplies.

Any other suggestions or things to watch out for?

Thanks,
Peter Jensen

[RCSE] FS: NCFM M60 after IHLGF

2005-05-17 Thread Peter Jensen
I have a NCFM M60 slope plane that's not going to get flown much
here in Florida (yes, there are slope sites here. No, this isn't the
right plane for them.) I'm planning on shipping it out to California
to someone in the San Diego area where I can pick it up on Thursday
(volunteers?); I'll sell whatever is left before I return on Monday.

The ship is outfitted with a battery, switchjack, and ballast
tube/slugs; the receiver is a Hitec 555 with HS-85MGs on the elevons.

Pictures:

http://www.diff.net/media/2003_12_23_lake_travis_sloping/img_5061.htm

It's obviously not as pretty now as it was in those pictures, and
who knows what it'll look like if I get to fly it out there. :)

Please contact me if you are interested in either receiving the
ginormous fedex box or in looking at it during the contest weekend.

Thanks!

Re: [RCSE] High Start Stories

2005-04-17 Thread Peter
This are the two best in my past.
The first was a while a go. A bunch of pilots in our club practiced F3J
launches. The pilot (Troy) did the leg signal ( you all know, it looks
like a dog peeing on a tree). While all this business was happening, he
somehow tangled the transmitter antenna with the launch line. Well the
signal was given, runners run, airplane gone, radio gone..Pilot
running after all of it.
Let this sick in for a moment, nice visual...

Johnny Berlin launching the Sailair to hard at our club contest, and
with a big bang failed the joiner box, but only half way. The glider now
sports a sexy 45° extra dihedral only on one wing. It looked like a
giant ornithopter with a dead engine hanging in the air. Johnny made the
time and then landed the glider on the field, nice. The Sailair is
flying again.

and the top 20 or so were all very talented. Not sure who to hook you up with,
most of the guys I flew with back then have either relocated, passed away, or
just don't fly any more.
This time of year I suspect you will be flying at either Heaqthcote oval or
Maddens plains. IF you flying at the oval, regardless of the wind direction
keep over the valley, and to the left had side of it., big sink holes on the

If you are flying at Maddens plains you will be surrounded by golf courses and
the air is pretty much good all around.
Have fun and good luck at the event.

Lawiki was timing for me and extra sets of eyes helping spotting the
disappearing glider. I did managed to dive 3200 in less then two minutes
and land on time. I have to say It was great flight. only for Troy
to out fly me the next round and go to over 4000 feet..I hate to be

[RCSE] Winch Drum Diameters

2004-11-04 Thread Peter Williams
Hi Eddie
I use 40mm and clam up to 65mm. I also have a long drum to help keep the
dia lower for longer. I usually use the clamshells unless the wind is
blowing fairly heavily and then I will go to the 40mm. I don't fly enough to
really have a good handle on the differences but I suspect the dia vs launch
height curve is fairly flat because I have done back to back launches with
and without the clammies and the launch height difference dosen't look that
much. Bear in mind I usually fly about once a month and attend most of the
NZ F3B series so this is not a well measured analysis.
I know Dave James who makes winches also uses 42mm and 65 I thinkHe has
a website and calls himself Winchnz, maybe a google will find it.

[RCSE] building the ideal plywood box for a Sportubes and DLGs

2004-10-17 Thread Peter Jensen
Hi folks,
I'm going to attend the ECHLG contest up in North Carolina next
week, and I finally have all of my planes working. However, I still
don't have a box built for my Sportube. This is a mostly obvious
exercise, but I feel like I should try to leverage the inventiveness
of others who might have come up with superior packing solutions.

I took this picture of Oleg's cardboard nice box last year:
http://www.diff.net/media/2003_10_12_East_Coast_HLG_contest/img_2990.htm

My situation won't be as pretty as his, because I have three planes
which all have differing amounts of dihedral and two with
non-removable stabs. I'm confident that I can make it work given the
materials I have, but it would be nice to see if there are any other
pictures of travel carriers for hand launch planes out there.

My current working set of materials includes two 4x8 sheets of 1/4
light plywood, a sheet of blue foam, plenty of glue/nails, and a
sportube in the mail. I might go for a hybrid plywood/cardboard box,
or I might put some lightening holes in the redundant parts of
plywood, but it doesn't seem like it will be that heavy.

I've searched the archives, but I haven't found too many good
pictures. Any pictorial suggestions?

Thanks,
Peter

My suggestion probably won't be immediately helpful to you, but I
modified my high start reel at the advice of a club member to increase
the effective reel diameter by drilling several (six?) holes around

then the rubber, and I managed to guess the placement of the

advantage is that I get about one revolution per pace on my home depot

Re: [RCSE] Loss of airplane, and - how to find it

2004-08-27 Thread Peter
More Piccolario stories,
I did loss my 2m Duck a week ago. With the Piccolario reporting, I was
going in. As the plane got closer to the ground (full crow) the voice
became more distorted. On the ground It reported 4 feet.
I lost the signal temporally walking closer to the plane. This is a good
thing since I was in a hilly, wooded area. As I picked up the signal it
was weaker iet. Now I used the Piccolario radio (not the RC radio) as a
directional antenna by pointing the small antenna level to the ground
rotating 360°.like a searchlight. At the weakest signal I was pointing
directly at the glider. I started walking looking for the signal
strength to improve ( the voice became louder and better) but still
looking for the week spot.
Out of the trees I was looking at a corn field 8feet tall..!
Some where in this mess was the plane. Getting readings holding the
radio next to the ground ( still looking for the week signal). Pointing
at the plane I walked straight line on to the glider, not seeing it till
5 feet from it. I did this with out help for the last part of the
search.
Practic this technic, It will fined you the lost plane.

Re: [RCSE] Antenna for HLG / Electric Fields

On Fri, Apr 23, 2004 at 05:13:49PM -0700, Martin Usher wrote:
On another topic, has anyone ever had glitch problems from power
  lines? (Mark Mech / Aerofoam)

In the current edition of Smithsonian there is a two page color photograph
of an outdoor art piece made by sticking about a thousand flourescent tubes
vertically into the ground under some high tension wires. The photograph is
taken at dusk and the tubes are all glowing.

This would be Richard Box's work, http://www.richardbox.com/ .
Click on the main graphic or the archive link to see the other cool
bits he's done.

This is an extreme example but it illustrates the significant electrical
fields that high voltage transmission lines give off. It will affect a radio
receiver, possibly enough to make it glitch. The question I can't answer is
how much is enough -- how close can you go to what lines without
experiencing problems. The art piece was done under 400kV lines; I don't
think anyone's going to be flying near those, but what about lower voltage
 lines?

Remember that a Red Herring isn't quite big or conductive enough to
do too much damage, but I've successfully flown underneath / in
between these lines for an hour or so with only one or two glitches
out of a GWS 4 channel single conversion receiver:

http://www.diff.net/media/2002_07_10_Oregon_trip/img_5872-medium.html

I'm not sure if I'm comfortable saying this in a public forum, but
the plane mostly glitches when you whack the lines (remember, with 4.5
ounces of white foam.) The lines were about 5' above my max launch,
so I didn't spend too much time up that high. I do not know the
voltage of those lines, but it's line 1, mile 18, tower 2 in
Hillsboro, OR, if anybody wants to look it up :)

We have neighborhood distribution lines running down one side of our field
and they don't affect our flying (assuming that nobody actually lands on
them, that is). I don't know what voltage they are, I think its 7kV. If they
were significantly higher voltage then the poles they are on would be a lot
taller and we'd be avoiding them just like any other obstacle.

So people have demonstrated solar powered planes from the sun and
from spotlights (NASA Dryden), as well as from lasers. Has anybody
done to math to see whether an inductively powered plane could be
flown under high lines? There are several technical challenges I can
think of, but it would be a neat way to get the power companies to
absolutely hate you...

-Peter

(Please, take all homeland security discussions off-list; this is
about interference and overload in receivers when flying in the
vicinity but not through power lines.)

Hi all,
You can use the 5cell without a problem if you have long servo leads. I
would not use the 5cell an a RES glider with stock servo leads. Due to
the longer wire in a scale or F3B, F3J Glider the resistance is
increased and the extra voltage is not a problem. And if one cell crapes
out you still have 4 more to get you home.

Re: [RCSE] Emphasis or de-emphasis on landings

2003-11-04 Thread Peter
Hi all,
Arrgh. is right.
Lets look at some facts.
1)It seems to me most of us are not to happy about the way our contest
are conducted.
2)Progress can not be stopped.
3)It's amusing how a bunch of middle aged men can yell at each other
without getting anything fixed and create confusion.
4)Some very smart and interesting ideas where stated.

Every sport (or business) needs time to sort things out, use smart
decisions to grow, guide them selfs on the right path.

I like to watch formula1 car racing. The cars begun to perform at
unsafe levels many times. Some restriction where made over the years (no
ground effect, no turbos, no slicks).
At the core of our unhappiness IS THE FACT: PROGRESS CAN NOT BE
STOPPED it can be guided. When was the last time we guided our
sport? When was the last time we where brainstorming our sport and did
come up with solid solutions?

One of the reasons why I like this sport so much is the camaraderie and
the good people in the sport, but this will not exclude us from having
growing pains.
I do not have the solution to the problem on hand, but lets start a
smart and progressive dialog.
Just like Joe, I like to meet people and going to contests is where
people are. Don's ideas are multiple and need to be explored.
Lets hear some more, and lets hope we can pull all together and find a
way to grow.

I'm sure Sheldon will answer properly, but it just appears to be a
pressure sensor, data logger, some glue, and lots and lots of
experimentation and integration. We're paying mostly for the latter,
which is quite fine by me.

The actual data you download from the device is converted into
altitude with some simple-looking and adjustable formulas, and there's
a convenient way to normalize the ground level in the software.

Does it have a way to zero it or correct for barometric pressure? Just
 curious. Thanks

It zeros when you first start it up, as far as I can tell.
Obviously with a pressure-only altimeter (just like in a real plane)
if you fly to a place with a different ambient air pressure or if the
weather changes a whole lot things will be skewed a bit.

In our application it should be easy to check for this by comparing
the difference between ground level at different points during the
day.

FWIW, I took my Alti2 from ATL - Las Vegas - San Diego, and the
cabin pressure was around 6200' at cruising altitude on the first leg
and around 5000' on the second leg. The ground readings look sane
(i.e. San Diego is lower than Atlanta, etc) and I used a 6 second
sampling rate. Security didn't even stop on the 4-cell pack
shrink-wrapped with an Alti2 on it that was blinking. :)

 Bravo Jack!

As to Bob's question...it will become what the people
at large want it to be, just like any class in our
 hobby.

I can see allowing period landing implements, ribbed
mat material and the gray Airtronics skids and such.

I can also see the year cut off moving with the times.
Why not just allow a 20 year cut off? Maybe only
change it every 5 years. Any design that is over 20
years old should be old enough to be nostalgic by the
people who flew them in the good old days. Remember
that some peoples good old days are different than
others. I am 50 now and I grew up flying Aquilas and
Windfree's and so the class as it is is right on
target. Someone who is 30 may see a Sagita or Falcon
880 as the good old days and someday it should be.

I could also see as some point needing a sub class
using an arbitrary date cut off as being what might be
called The Golden Age of Soaring Class.

Here's to the good old days. May they live forever.

As I composed the RES rules, Nostalgia was in the

  better airfoils,
  changing
moment arms, better construction techniques, etc.
  Consequently, I
  'borrowed'

A current rules change proposal would remove the

   prohibits their use.

If Nostalgia becomes an official AMA event, how
  long will it be before
someone changes those rules to allow landing

  the

[RCSE] DLG Aileron flutter.

Hi Guys.

I got just the slightest hint of flutter on my DLG todayit was windy

on one launch (and a good one If I say so myself).

So now some questions

Has anyone successfully used the Hitec feather HS 50 servos for ailerons for
DLG.

I have the servos (CS10s) pretty far out in the wing already however I want
to go out further. (Ailerons 22long servo out about 10 from root).

The wing layup is 1.6 oz cloth top and bottom and so I'm thinking of maybe
another layer over the ailerons maybe 3/4 oz top and bottom 1wide. Any
other suggestions for this problem.

Re: [RCSE] Why Negative Last

2000-04-11 Thread Peter S Carr

Hi YK and y'all. I have an old Jaguar, car not sloper, and the
maintenance manual recommends that the negative "earth" be disconnected
before working on the electrical system. The theory is that any
acccidental short to the chassis will not burn up the expensive stuff.
I've had a battery blow up. The cause was gas on top of the battery while
I tried to connect jumper cables. If you are making connections to a
battery, It's best to make the "last" connection away from the battery so
the spark in not near the gas. Cars that are running have a fan that
stirs up the air and dissapates the gas. Batteries without this airflow
may blow.
Hope this helps.

Subject: RE: [RCSE] Why Negative Last

  High George,
The reason is probably due to the recommended system on your car
 or truck
which will have a negative earth system.
If you make the positive connection last there is a danger of your
 spanner
making contact with some other part of the car and "Bloooie"
 you've done
 a
welding job! or melted your spanner.
This can't happen if you make the negative connection last.

  Regards
   John

[RCSE] Dynamic soaring a UC Model

2000-01-16 Thread Peter Williams

Big Snip
We flew with a former U control expert, Harry Roe. When he saw us
cranking up some D.S. angled loops, he observed that they used to do a
similar type of sustained flight with U contro stunt planes in high winds
after the enginge ran out of fuel! Has anyone else heard of that?
 Paul Siegel
Hi Paul
Have spent hours doing just that, mainly flew combat models, you need
something light and clean so this rules out racing and speed models(high
wing loading). Several in a circle at once is a giggle and then we used to
attach streamers and fly "combat" but without the motors running. With a
smaller model a good launch and some serious whipping the motor is never
started. You can build up speed doing basically lazy eights (low into wind
half loop higher downwind half bunt etc etc) and do aerobatics as well
with the energy, the more wind the better!!!!!!!

[RCSE] Carbon flying stab rods.

1999-12-16 Thread Peter S Carr

Greetings to all! Having lost a ship to a failed stab at Cumberland this
year, I'm somewhat concerned about stab strength. I have 2 questions for
the group.

1st question: I'm assembling a Whyte Wings Sapphire which supplies carbon
stab rods. The instructions want me to sand the rods to fit the tubes.
Will this technique weaken the rods and allow them to snap?

2nd question: Is the difference in weight between carbon and piano wire
enough to justify its use? I wonder if a reliable rod is worth the extra
nose weight.

Any comments?

Thanks to all.

Re: [RCSE] Can hawks do a loop????

1999-09-28 Thread Peter Birren

Great stories, Tom, and I hope your post resurrects this thread. We
discussed cordivae (Ravens and Crows) and hawks' behavior several times
over the years and it's one of my favorite threads. Caro, GaryO and a
couple others have lots to say about cordivae behavior.

One of my fave experiences with a red tail (stop me if you've heard this
one): Several years ago, over the flats of NCentral IL, I was looking
for a thermal when a female red tail scooted below me and towards a
"tree corner" where the male's thermalling was already in progress. I
was at 1600' or so agl.

Round about 2500', the hawk was getting closer... like about 20 feet
below, so I said, "Hey hawk!". The bird did a rapid 45-to-45 to see what
the noise was, saw nothing, and resumed circling. When she was about 10
feet below, I shouted, "HEY, HAWK!" (I mena, what _do_ you say to a
hawk?) followed by a most amazing display of aerobatic control.

The big bird rolled inverted, belly up. It looked at me, scowled,
extended talons (all while on its back) and screeched. Then it did a
half-loop to go right-side-up, tightened its wings and, in 3 turns was
easily 150 feet above me.

We played tag for about 9 miles. Once she realized I was up there just
for fun and wasn't a threat, she's show me a thermal and wait until I
got there before she headed off to the next one.

Gotta love them birds!
