One of the characteristics is that if I get a half-way decent lauch out of

Re: [RCSE] DX7 range

2006-10-19 Thread junk1
OK, the web site says Limits of Vision.
Sounds sufficient but I have to ask: How much signal power does it put
 out?
Or, is it just used car salesman talk.

 Bill Swingle
 Janesville, CA

I have to question this too, because 2.4ghz is limited in power output
and it doesn't travel (propagate) well. I know people are having good
results
with these radios and I wouldn't hesitate to use one on any small
airplane that would be within 1000ft.
I have personal experience with video feeds on both 2.4ghz and 1.2ghz.
and 1.2 has much better range, but both freqs. will not go through trees,
so if you fly behind a tree and the radio doesn't have last frame hold you
could completely go out of control. real world use will decide if this is an
issue or not, but the bottom line is that high frequencies at low power have
poor
range and there is a lot of stuff on 2.4ghz to screw up your signal when the
primary
signal is lost.
I would really like to see spread spectrum on 72mhz. but it probably isn't a
high enough
frequency to work at a high resolution
All of that being said, if they made a module for my 9C, I would buy it in a
heart beat...

. Does anyone have a
reference, guide or link to information how one might go about utilizing
these stripes as an aid? Specifically I am looking for suggested widths
 and
 placement of the stripes.

On another related note, most hunting scopes (for rifles) have graduated
lines on the cross hairs to determine distance, the line spacing is
typically
the length of an average deer (about 6' but you need the specs for the
scope).
If you buy a cheap $20 to $40 9 to 20 power scope with a 40mm objective
lens, you should be able to get a good estimate of distance based on the
wing span against the reference lines, you should be able to see the plane
much better too.
Many marine binoculars also have similar reference lines.

Re: [RCSE] Coroplast source

2006-03-29 Thread junk1
If you are near a large city with plastics suppliers, the coroplast should
be about $9.00 to $14.00 per sheet for the thin or standard and
around $15.00 to $20.00 for the thick stuff.
It is usually only available from wholesale suppliers, so make up a biz.
name and tell them to go ahead and tax it. Most wholesalers will do
this for someone who doesn't plan on using enough product to set
up an account.

Mark Mech
www.aerofoam.com

I used a 4' x 8' sheet of 4mm stuff for that box. I procured the coroplast
from a FastSigns franch for $40, though there is a coro supplier here in
town that sells the stuff for $20 (I needed it right away). The first
place I tried to buy a sheet from wanted $90 for a sheet! That's the
per-sq-foot rate!

I used gaffer's tape for the corners and hinges and so far the box has
lasted 2 years. It's also large enough to fit my Mantis and a Citation
(Super-V-esque) when I take the DLG foam fittings out of it.

Re: [RCSE] Synthesized RF module vs multiple fixed modules?

The Hitec Spectra has probably had the
longest run/best chance for positive evolution. Now JR, Fut Mpx have
similar units, but relatively little consumer field experience.

Huh? Futaba came out with a synthesized module for the 9Z series of
radios long before Hitec had the Spectra module.

No disrespect to the futaba module, but the hitec spectra module existed
long before
the 9Z radio hit the market. I used the hitec module on my futaba 8uaf over
10 years
ago and on my hitec radio almost 20 years ago. I think futaba is relatively
new player
in the freq. module game by comparison. I am sure they are fine though, this
is all very
old technology, our cell phones have been far more advanced during the same
time
period, but there is a much larger consumer body driving their development.
The new spread spectrum stuff will force the companies to get competetive on
a new
level in order to stay in biz. and not become dinosaurs (like our current
radios were the day they were built).
I hope they can eventually do the spread spectrum on lower freqs. like ,
maybe 72mhz. h, we already
use that freq,

It appears that I need to start chowing down on some crow!

Wow, so Hitec had a synthesized module out in 1986 or earlier?? I had no
idea. Sorry if I was incorrect on that. I hardly recall Hitec radios at
that time, so hence my confusion. My first 9ZWC module was purchased in
1995 and I know they had it out with the first generation of the radio the
9ZAP around 1992 or 93, so if Hitec beat Futaba out by 8 to 10 years, then
 I stand corrected.

I bought my first computer radio 20 years ago in 1986, a Futaba 8UHP. No
synthesizer on that one for sure and I do not recall anyone else having
one that far back, but then again I really only paid attention to either
Futaba or JR in those days. It had mechanical pots on the back, no display
screen, etc. Really bare bones compared to what we have now, so Hitec
being that far ahead of the game that far back is truly impressive.

[RCSE] Re: [RCSE]Spread Spectrum

2006-01-26 Thread junk1
make it possible for larger planes with more solid structures or components
to potentially encounter an attitude where the little antennas are masked
from the TX, thereby losing signal, Snipped.

Keep in mind that the 2.4ghz. freq. does not propagate well/(at all) through
anything less than
clear line of site. I have been playing with long range wireless internet
(similar freq range)
and if anything disturbs the line of site, it will effectively block the
signal.
I can't make an empirical claim about the rc radios because I haven't tried
one yet, but
the wireless internet signal coming out of a very directional dish with
about 12db gain
(conservative estimate) would easily transmit and receive 8 miles across
the bay.
It would not transmit 500 ft. with one large Douglass Fir in the line of
site.
It also wouldn't work through rain or heavy fog.
This was directional, so there was no signal reflecting around the tree, but
I would be afraid
of flying behind anything if I was using 2.4ghz. freq.
I will be interested to see if these units will work through small trees in
the site line.
Maybe someone with one could do a range test and try
walking behind trees with the plane?
This is definitely the direction things should go,
I can't wait to get a plug in module when it comes out!
(I hope it's on a much lower freq. though)

Re: [RCSE] assisted soaring,etc

2006-01-23 Thread junk1
I haven't flown a contest in at least 6 years, but I have to agree with
Daryl,
this is something that shouldn't be used in a contest environment.
I use to race one design sailboats and there were very tight rules about
equipment. Everything on the boat had to be on a list of accepted MFG's.
In reality, most of the guys with sensors in their sailplanes aren't
threatening
the big boys of soaring, but it certainly gives an advantage over the other
intermadiate pilots, and in my opinion that is worse.
If I had sensors in a sailplane, I would not expect to officially enter any
contest,
I might fly in them, but wouldn't expect my score to count if I had an
unfair advantage.

Re: [RCSE] carbon boom interference, Ham guy inputs.

2006-01-17 Thread junk1
The triangle approach sounds interesting, anyone else hear something
similar?

I use triangle patterns all the time in my delta wing designs, they work
very well, but I have the space to keep it internal, I wouldn't want an
external
triangle training behind the TE to the boom.
it would be in the dirty air leaving the TE, but it would still cause
unwanted
drag and might even start oscillating which would create a lot of drag
The balanced dipole, I.E. ground running out the other wing, should be
optimal, BUT, the rx mfg. has already tuned the system to allow for the
ground
structure of the entire average flight pack to be used as the ground.
You would need the ability to test and tune the ground lead, so it is
balanced
with the antenna, this may not be necessary and it would be easy enough to
do
some empiracle testing.
You could start with a 1/2 wave ground, do range tests (on the ground) and
then
start clipping 1/2 at a time. It isn't a perfect test, but you would find
out
something useful. It may be that you find out it isn't worth wasting time
playing with antennas when you could be flying with a proven
installation...

Re: [RCSE] carbon boom interference, redux

2006-01-16 Thread junk1

I set up an Allegro, magnet wire antenna run external to the boom -
loose wraps back to the rudder.
I have since seen some erratic flying;

I had these problems when I first started boom wrapping transformer
wire on my Mosquito Hawk.
Wrapping reduced range significantly, I ended up doing 2 wraps
around the fuselage longitudinally, then going out the boom with the last
few inches trailing.
This was much better, even with cheap GWS rx's.
This plane is only 30 in span so you can't fly too far out without losing
sight of it..

Sorry I'm getting steamed about this, but it's infuriating to attempt to

It is not difficult as long as you use the US mail for shipping.
I have shipped many parcels to Canada with no problems other than
being delayed a week getting through customs.
If you ship by a private carrier, the Canadian recipients have to pay
brokerage fees to get it through customs. Many times the fees are
more than the product you shipped!!

But they can justify putting an entire magazine sized product guide (ad) in

I won't even look at the product guide let alone actually order from it.
My dream would be for all of us glider guys (that only fly at glider fields
or
non fields) get together and form our own group for insuring ourselves and
the fields

for glider only and specified E-powered activities.
The insurance for our type of activities is very reasonble, think about it,
there really isn't

a lot of risk.
I'm not renewing my AMA membership, I haven't used it for 3 years.
I may renew if I end up moving to an area with an active field, but the
insurance for accessing

Re: [RCSE] Foam

2005-10-05 Thread junk1

I somehow missed part of this thread, are we talking about
EPP, EPE or the nerf type stuff that the Geek was made from
It was my understanding that the nerf type stuff was highly toxic
when burnt and had to be cut with an abrasive wire. (like a band saw)
That was a cool plane though..
I don't know of any company that molds EPP in a 10 thick block.
4.5 is the max I have seen. It can be glued with contact cement
and the hot wire will go right through the glue joint.

50ft. of my 2m rubber (6lb. pull @ 300%) is only $35.00.
2m Competition(10lb. pull @ 300%) is $40.00.
They come with connectors and 2 rings.(1 for the stake and 1 for the

Just add line.
If you want to keep it really light, I have 100lb. spectra line that is

the size of 20lb. fishing line and half the weight.
I will add 250ft. of spectra for $10.00.

Re: [RCSE] GL for One Design

2005-08-11 Thread junk1

As long as I can make mine out of EPP.
Actually I would like to see a 3 function catagory rather than RES.
It would be fun to have an open class with limitations, I.E.
something like:
100
no carbon.
no glass.
no aramids.
3 functions.
Maybe no ARFs.
This would leave room for creativity in design, but it wouldn't
allow any high tech materials.

I would design EPP kits for this.

Our product manager helped do the QC testing on the first shipment of
these, and with multiple units was able to get over 200 feet with every
single unit WITHOUT the external antenna. A couple went up to the 300
ft max range, others had a max range of around 230-270 feet. (With
antenna, we easily got over 800 feet and close to 1000 ft)

With this sort of performance, I would feel safer with an extra rx and
servos on mounted
on a pole to wave around
I thought this device sounded great at first, but it doesn't sound very
useful at this point.
Sailplanes in particular are susceptible to getting shot down because they
are flown
much farther out than the average RC plane. There is much more probability
of your plane
being closer to someone elses TX that is say 1/2 mile or 3/4 mile away.
A test at your flying site from ground level with a meter that won't pick up
distant
signals is worthless.
Yes it would be great in the impound area, especially if they put an alarm
on it so it
beeps whenever it hears conflicted signals.

Re: [RCSE] Tx cases

2005-05-06 Thread junk1
Right. I have absolutely no doubts that they are good. A plastic case
full of foam rubber that costs over $100 had jolly well better be good.
I have one of the $125 sized pelicans (holds 2 TXs) and I have the mother of
all
pelicans which is about 2'x4'x1' with rollers (for my digital recording
gear).
The smaller pelican was bought from a garage sale for $15.00 and I like
it, but wouldn't pay more than about $45.00 for it.
The larger cases are more cost effective as thay cost no more than any large
road case, actually less in a lot of instances.
I don't see a real need for a sealed case for TX transport in a car and I am
not on
a global expedition, so it doesn't need to be crush proof.
The home desperate tool cases work very well for 2 TXs.
If I had a $2300.00 TX, I might consider a crush proof case, but it would
be more crush proof than the pelican, which isn't really designed to be
crush proof.

long folded and the triangular shape doesn't allow stacking things on top

I sanded and contact cemented the one long overlapping joint which

Re: [RCSE] Futaba Super 8UAPS/8UAFS

2005-03-18 Thread junk1
The question is has anybody modified their radio and switch the switches
around on the transmitter?
Yes this is a standard proceedure, the switches are mounted on their own
little
pc boards, so you have to desolder the leads and make new longer leads to
route
the switch and pc board to the other side.
I don't remember if the pc boards are fitted, you may have to actually swap
the boards
to the reciprocal switches, then extend the leads.
Not a big deal though.

While you are at it, why not order some better switches to replace them
with!
Even radio shack switches are more robust than the flimsey things that come
with the radio.

Re: [RCSE] Re:Profi Multiplex 4000

2005-03-14 Thread junk1
(unless you like the Profi 4000 but even then the
company is not very supportive) and JR is in. Everything else is not
worth
talking about. Where is Airtronics in all of this? I used to like my
Airtronics Stylus but that was getting old (heavy). Futaba's new offering
(14mz) is over the top for me. I don't like the styling of the Profi
4000 -
too big and pricey.
I was an mpx dealer and could have had a 4000 at wholesale, it is an awesome
radio and will be for a long time, if you like it, use it.
I have personally used futaba 8uafs's and 9C's, I have never been shut out
of
a combination mix that I wanted, although I had to play some games sometimes
to do it.
The 9C is an improvement in that area, far easier to program.
I too build some rather complex UAV's and most of the customers have
specified 9C's and PCM rx's.
I can't think of a single radio that gives as much bang for the buck.
I paid about $260 for my second 9C (new from Bruckner Hobbies) tx last year.
If you need more radio than that, go find it, but I haven't found the need
yet,
even on 100lb.+ airplanes.
Personally I have always loathed JR and Airtronics tx's just because the
interface was
completely un-intuitive( to me, you may love it!). I almost got into JR when
I got back into the sport in the
early 90's, but my radio aggravated me so much that I sold all the JR stuff
and switched
to futaba. The futaba service sucks (in my experience), but I would only
send it to Radio South or the guy in Prescott anyway.
JR and Airtronics are fine, but you need to be comfortable with the
interface...
I think John was alluding to the fact that the high end radios are not the
big sellers, at least not the bulk
of the market, probably due to the shift and growth in park flyers.
I don't think the high end radios are going away though, there is too much
large scale and
IMAC stuff going on..
I am still amazed at the large number of people still flying ProLine!
(I would love to get 3 channel sticks for my radios)

non powered glider of a few years ago, I think this will lead to
a larger class of e-powered gliders that will be able to do LMR launches
and contest formats from much smaller fields since you won't need to
stretch anything out to launch.
I would wager a guess that these planes may be in the 2m range or slightly
larger and that the flying will be done closer in due to the smaller field
sizes.
Larger planes are great, but it doesn't seem like I get to fly them as
much..

Sitting in my car here at about 20' MSL, my GPS says anything from -125
to +190.
Yeah, when I'm down below deck and I look
at the GPS, I get so terrified that I don't want to look
out the window!! :^)

Re: [RCSE] composite adhesive

2005-01-26 Thread junk1
Vinylesters have been around for awhile,
I used a vinylester fairing compound when I
rebuilt my sailboat ( www.aerofoam.com/trimaran.html )
Vinylesters have properties similar to epoxies, but to a lesser
degree. I.E. less adhesive strength, less flexibility etc., but they
are very superior to polyester resins and are exactly the same
in handling, mixing etc. You can even mix them with polys to alter
the properties.
They would be excellent for fuselages and probably do well for
any molded application, but they are acetone based and will
melt foam to a puddle in no time.
The vinylester fairing compound is the best of both worlds,
it is far more flexible than polyester, so you won't ever see cracking
and you can use polys on it in the future.
One of the big problems with using epoxy pathing or repairs on
a poly molded hull (or airplane part) is that you can never use
a poly over the repair, it won't adhere to epoxy.
Vinylester can be mixed or thinned with standard gelcoat to provide
a harder out surface. This doesn't apply much to our light weight
airplanes, but it could apply to building molds.

Re: close encounters of the aircraft kind: was Re: [RCSE] High Altitude Glider

2005-01-18 Thread junk1

Location is the key. I fly a beach slope which is close to two training
airports. This means it has a steady flow of new, full scale pilots
showing
off their new skills but poor judgement.
The local slope in Bellingham, Wa. is literally about 1/4 Mile from the end
of
the runway of the international airport! It is directly in the landing path
of the
runway!!! The tower is aware of the slope and just told them to stay under
200ft.
if there is traffic. Traffic is hard to miss because it is coming straight
at you
This slope has been in use for over 15 years and there has never been an
incident
of any sort.
I was flying on Orcas Island a few years ago at a site that is about 3/4
mile from the
airport and there was an incident, The full scale pilot was completely at
fault.
He saw us, knew some of the guys flying and he intentionally buzzed the
field at about 300ft. He got close enough to a model to realize the
implications
and then made a complaint to the airport later.
They checked into it, but when they heard the entire story, they verbally
chastized
the full scale guy

Re: [RCSE] High Altitude Glider

2005-01-17 Thread junk1
A buddy stumbled upon this site. Interesting, anyone familiar withthe chaps
who attempted this project? http://members.shaw.ca/sonde/index.htm
I was loosely involved with a similar project about 6 years ago,
I designed a specific airfram for a 120K' drop with the intent of
establishing a glide at 100K. (a record at the time)
The group that was sponsoring the project had technical problems
with the radio uplink and down link, but the major problem
was getting FAA clearance for the airspace. There were only specific
windows of time available in that region and the major stumbling block
was that NASA was trying to do the same thing at the same time.
It was apparent that the NASA group had preferential treatment when
it came to getting the approval! Go figure...

Re: [RCSE] Need FedEx claim advice

2005-01-07 Thread junk1

Perhaps they'll accept a claim for an experimental remotely piloted
aircraft?
I sent some UAV wings to NM by Fedex ground.
They were very adequately packed in their cores with cardboard
around the perimeter edge and a roll and a half of packing tape
literally mummifying the whole thing.
I had sent others this way and it wasn't a problem because there was
at least 2 of foam covering the closest surface.
They made it all the way to NM, then were returned by some
snit the local transfer who didn't want to ship anything that wasn't
completely covered with cardboard.
They came all the way back to WA. just so I could cover the exposed
sides with cardboard and they could then ship them back to NM.
They were 5 days late because of that.

Re: [RCSE] GWS servos

Anybody using GWS servos.
Wondering how good or bad they are.

I use a lot of them, they are great, but I wouldn't put them
in anything that can't take a bounce or 2.
They fail regularly for no apparent reason.
The stronger sub micros like the naro hp bb's seem to hold
up fairly well, but I have had an number of GWS servos fail
by suddenly going hard over one direction until they lock up.
It is interesting because you can generally push them back the other
direction while they are still on and they will re center.
Adjusting the travel limits on the tx will generally stop them from
doing it again.
I still won't use them on anything expensive or that can't survive a crash or
3

I have received an email from the manager of the Futaba Service Center in
which he
expresses regret at the treatment I received when I tried to have them deal
with serious
product deficiencies in their 5 channel PCM radios back in the 90s. I have
also received
an explanation of why this is unlikely to happen in the future.

Recognition of the problem and a desire to set it straight is what I have been
looking for
all the time. Now that I have it, Futaba is back on my buy-list.

Re: [RCSE] Inverters (Warning)

2004-12-18 Thread junk1
I have used many, many inverters from the early tripp-lite buzz boxes to the
latest sine wave equipment. They cause radio interference. The inexpensive
 ones are the worst.

All of the cheap ones are actually a stepped square wave, it is only 2 steps
Thats why electric motors have a hard time with them.
They work well with soldering irons though..
If you really wasn't the best, you need an Outback they are true sine wave,
but
one will set you back $2000.00 for a 2500watt inverter.
