You can use an Electron 6 with your 12Z or 14MZ and a Y cord for power.
Just set the channels to 1 2 3 4 5 6 and go. I just set up a Big Bird from
USA that way and works perfect.

This proves several things. Any or all of the following could apply.

First is Gordy's rule of weights: Everyone else's plane weighs less than
yours no matter how light yours is. If you build a Supra RTF at 40
ounces,

somebody will have a lighter one!

Then: Stan is a lousy builder.

Next: Maurice is a great builder.

Next: Maurice used lighter equipment than Stan.

Next: Maurice has the CG at the back of the wing ala DP.

Next: Stan has the CG at the front of the wing.

Next: Stan's scale weighs heavy.

Next: Maurice's scale weighs light.

Next: Stan's plane has more carbon, paint or epoxy in it so it's slightly
heavier.

Next: I've heard 61-65 ounces depending on servo choice.  Let's face it;
if
you use sub micros at 6 grams or you use micro digitals at nearly an ounce
a

piece, you'll end up with different weights.

Next: 99% of us couldn't tell the difference between the way a 61 ounce
plane and a 65 ounce plane flies. 4 ounces out of 60 is only .07%.
That's
nothing for the majority of us. Most of us can't tell the difference in
how

a plane flies unless we change the loading by 2 ounces per square foot,
which equates to about 20 ounces. On a light plane like an AVA, we might
notice a difference in the way the plane flies at 1 ounce per square foot
increased loading, or an additional 10 ounces.

Next: None of this really matters at 1000' and 20 minutes!

Just my humble opinion of course. Personally, I think you've done fine
Stan!

   Subject: [RCSE] Supra #42 flies!!

Following three weeks of slooow assembly, Supra #42 (carbon) was
launched today. The weather at Poway was perfect with light winds, light
thermals and lots of sun. No rain this year so there is no grass, just
brown stubble that generates thermals from about 0900 until sunset.

My Supra is a carbon model with a beautiful dark orange fuse and
white and orange wings. Assembly took a little longer than I expected
mainly due to my desire to put the pushrods inside the fuse and boom. The
fuse is tight quarters with the ballast tube installed. Details of the
pushrod installation are available from me off line.

The Airtronics 94761Z digital servos are a perfect fit in the wing
and fuse. I used the supplied hardware to connect servos to flight controls
and covered the servos with the supplied covers. Thanks to Barry Kennedy
and Larry Jolly for providing me with pictures and suggestions about making
the installation and setup.

'ole #42 was almost perfectly trimmed and flew nearly the length of
the field with the first hand launch. The first winch launch was equally
nice with a steep climb without the application of a launch mode. I used
the 5? degree tip joiners for increased stability during launch and
thermalling at long range with my ancient eyes. All up weight was 68 ounces
including 3.5 ounces of nose lead and the CG was set at 64 mm.

After the joy of the first successful launch waned, I noticed that
Supra was still at about winch height although not encountering any
thermals. A quick trip around the field, down in the valley and way upwind
did not produce a thermal encounter, but did produce a 5+ minute flight.
The model has great L/D and good speed range. It will go fast and it will
slow down for min sink or thermaling.

A quick dive test and inverted flight showed a nose heavy condition
so .5 ounces were removed for the next flight. Again the dive test and
inverted still showed a nose heavy condition so another .5 ounces were
removed. Now it was right for my style of flying. It will pull out of a
dive test in 4-500 feet and flies inverted with little elevator.

A few adjustments were needed for the elevator compensation in
landing mode, but it isn't quite there yet. However landings are easily
controlled as the model will slow to a walk even without a head wind. The
large rudder provides good control for those last minute jinks for the
tape.

The Supra is a well designed, beautifully constructed thermal
duration model. It is very stable on launch and in flight with no bad
habits that I could see on these first flights. Judging from the winch
launch results, the carbon wing should be strong enough for F3J (I will test
it this weekend in Phoenix).

Thanks again to Airtronics, Barry Kennedy and Larry Jolly for their
help with this project.

Contact me directly with question regarding assembly or setup.

Re: [RCSE] Molded Supra Raw Weights

2006-01-21 Thread mpodder

Hi Don

My plane #31 is finished and flying. So I cant give you raw weight but my
AUW is 61 oz. Originally with the plane balanced at Drelas recommended CG
(92 mm) it took 4 3/4 oz added to the nose making the AUW of the plane 62
3/4 oz. By final set up (dive test and more dive test) I removed 1 3/4 oz
to get the plane to fly like a want a TD ship to fly. I could be wrong but
I believe the 92 mm CG is more of a European F3J set up.

Just my opinion but what a plane at 61 oz.

This message is directed to a small group of new molded supra owners, and
probably not of interest to other.

I have an excel spread sheet I would be happy to send to any other Molded
Supra owner who has not yet started assembly of their newly arrived
baby.
I only ask that you weight all the raw kit parts and add your weights to
the

sheet and return the sheet to me.

I am not a weight weenie, but I started this exercise to try and determine
a

couple of things. First thing I was curious about was the exact weight
difference between the carbon wing lay-up and the standard wing lay-up.
Barry talked around it and didn't give a precise answer. The next thing, I
am trying to understand why some people are talking about having to add on
the order of 4 oz of nose weight to balance. Was this due to variations in
fin, stab, boom, or pod weights, or is this inherent to the molded design?

What have I found out so far with raw weights from 2 planes (#34 and #48),
left and right wing tips and joiners are VERY equal in weight - good.
Besides the type of wing lay-up, the most variation in weight has shown up
in the tail boom. One boom weighed 63g and the other 73g, on the order of
a

15% variation and who wants extra weight aft of the cg.

this overkill or a misapplication of this servo?

The airtronics servo has performed impeccably as a rudder servo on small

problems. In comparing the JR and Airtronics servo they're nearly identical
on paper. I've included the details below. What are others opinions?

[RCSE] Supras done

2006-01-02 Thread mpodder

Hi All

I finished my Kennedy Supra last night. It went together really nice. If
the fog clears and it doesn't rain I'll fly it today.
I was hoping for 61 to 62 oz but came out a little heavier at 62 3/4 even
though I was very careful with glue and install. What really surprised me
was I had to add 4 1/2 oz of lead to the nose (using the Kennedy 1200 mil
battery pack) to reach Dr. Drelas recommended CG of 91.5mm (actually set it
at 92mm). I'm hoping when I fly the plane that I will be able to take some
of that nose weight out. I like a rearward CG anyway.

I'll let you know how the first flights go

Originally I was using DS5125's and had so many problems, they reside in

Re: [RCSE] Prayer Time at Visalia

2005-09-15 Thread mpodder
The purpose of Prayer at Visalia is not to cause contention among the
contestants or to demean the faith of others. But to make available a time
for those who desire to pray.

I understand that there are those who do not believe as I do and that there
are those that do not believe at all. And yes I know there are those that
will post humorous or even spiteful replies to this post. But I do not
believe this to be true of Robs question so I will answer it to the best of
my ability.

Prayer will be offered, at the flagpole, at 7:15 am, Saturday and Sunday, to
our Father, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, in the name of Jesus Christ
and will conclude in the same manner.

Please forgive me for not being more specific in the first post and thank
you Rob for your concern.

Contest. It will be held at the flagpole 7:15 am to 7:30 am, Saturday and
Sunday, before the pilots meeting. This will give us a chance to thank God
for his many blessings, to continue to lift up those whose lives have been
torn apart by the terrible disaster in the south and to ask for Gods
protection and blessing on the contest.

If you would like to help, by leading a portion of the prayer, please
contact me either by email or phone. 661 3031881

Probably not before the middle or end of next week. That's when it's been
available in the past. I did talk to Larry yesterday and he said there were
around 260 contestants already.

Re: [RCSE] Model finish

2005-09-07 Thread mpodder

Hi Dan

The gel coat on the Ava fuse will stand up to Acetone with no problem. So
that's the first thing to try. Second is some 2000 wet and dry paper. Be
careful the gel coat isn't that thick. Then finish polish it with Wrights
Silver Cream. This also works very well on scratches and other mistakes on
Moldies.

I guess it's like a new car before you get that first door ding...

Before assembly, I had my new Ava safely in it's bag. The fuse and
tailboom were in the side pocket. The result is some of the carbon
powder from the inside of the tailboom found its way onto the nosecone
leaving some dark streaks on the white finish.

The finish doesn't seem to be marred, I just can't seem to get the marks
out.
It's not the end of the world but it is so daggone good looking!

Any suggestions?

[RCSE] Foam F3F

2005-09-02 Thread mpodder

I'm wanting to get a foam slope racer that can handle light and strong
winds. The problem is there is to many choices and I don't have the
experience to choose.

The planes I'm interested in are:

60 JW (Bowman)
Super Tron or Screaming Banshee-60 (Tuffplanes)
Gulp SR or GV-60 (Steve Drake)
S-15 (Wowwings)

Any suggestions that would help me make a decision would be appreciated.

One of the most impressive things about Dave is his eagerness to help other
modelers.

I just put a Tragi 705 together and had questions about the flap linkage.
Dave was not only one of the first to reply he willing entered into an on
going dialog that made my built not only successful but easy. That's a
pretty selfless act from someone who is in the business of building up
planes.

I hope to meet Dave some day and thank him, maybe at Visalia, but until now
this will have to do.

Re: [RCSE] Still using aileron differential?

2005-06-12 Thread mpodder
I to saw Phil's post about Dr. Drela's message. Because of my respect for
Dr. Drela's academic achievements (Masters in Aeronautical Engineering and
Professor at MIT) and his real world experience I immediately tried his
suggestion on my XP4 DLG. I reduced the differential from 55% to 0 and
increased the rudder to aileron coupling from 60% to 90% (yes I realize Mark
Drela flies without rudder coupling but my left thumb isn't as good as his).
The improvement was immediate. The plane track better and I was able to fly
in much tighter turns without falling off. I did feel that the nose wasn't
coming into the turn quite enough so I went to 100% rudder coupling with
ailerons and again a noticible improvement. But it still wasn't quite as
coordinated a turn as I wanted. So I added back 20% differential and for my
real world test it was perfect.

So after what I felt was a successful test with noticible improvement on my
DLG I decided to try reducing differential on my 128 Escape Lt. The
improvement from reducing differential and increasing rudder on my Escape
were just as obvious. End results were I went from 65% differential to 35%
and from 30% rudder coupling to 70%. As with the hand launch the
improvement was immediate.

So for me I would have to say Dr. Drela is right about the use of aileron
differential. Because though I don't fly with rudder and ailerons
uncoupled, as Mark Drela does, reducing differential with increasing rudder
coupling (to compensate for the weak left thumb) defiantly made an
improvement in the handling of my XP4 DLG and my 128 Escape Lt.

Just what I think

I recently followed a link provided by Phil Barnes to a message posted by
Dr. Drela. The message was that Dr. Drela did not use aileron (flaperon)
differential in DLG planes. The rational was that the differential caused
some unwanted pitch changes. My questions concern the application of Dr.
Drela's theory to the larger planes.

I wonder whether you all (experts):

1) still use aileron differential in 2 and 3 meter planes and
2) still couple the ailerons to the flaps (so they act as flaperons)

[RCSE] Futaba 9C update (90deg flap)

2005-05-11 Thread mpodder
Hi All
I just received this information from Futaba so I thought I would pass it
along.

If your transmitter has a serial number that begins with a number greater
than 0206.., it does not need an update. If the beginning of the serial
number is less than 0206.., it needs the update. For example my transmitter
serial number is 020613228 so I don't need the update.

I hope this clarifies which transmitters need the update and which ones
don't. This also means to get 90 degs flap you are going to have to us the
OFS master and 2 mixers as I stated previously and as it shows on my web
page http://www.nonsilence.com/soaring/9c

Re: [RCSE] Futaba 9C (Secret untold)

Hi John
I believe the problem you are talking about is the V-tail glitch that was
fixed with a modified chip. This caused one side of the ruddervator to have
no compensation is Butterfly. I have never heard a problem with flaps in
Butterfly.

The untold secret is the OFS function that allows you to change the center
of the servo electronically giving you 90 deg. flap travel. You can read
about this on my 9C set up page which was graciously published for me on the
Soaring index.

Re: [RCSE] Futaba 9C (Secret untold)

2005-05-04 Thread mpodder
That's right John. Without the use of the OFS function 45 deg of travel is
all you can get. For some reason Futaba expects you to want as much flap
travel up as down. It may have to do with power ship requirements I don't
know. But with the OFS function you can go as high as 80 deg actual servo
arm travel. Normally though that will bury the arm at one end or the other.
You will probably have to make new linkage unless you have a lot of
adjustment on you rods.

If it's not blue and orange it's not the real light.

BTW: The Starlight 2000 and 3000 have less rudder area than the stock
rudder on the Escape Lt. and would be much harder to modify for US TD.

flourescent monokote / ultracoat removalBrent
Put on some gloves get in a well ventilated area and get out the Acetone.
Use it liberally and you will be able to pull almost all the color. At the
most there will be a light haze left that will not show through the new
covering. Be sure to check all glue joints before recovering. Especially
if the part was built with CA (Acetone can dissolve CA)

Hope this helps

OK, this was a mess... I'm uncovering a rudder, and the monokote is
seperating from its color - eg, the clear layer comes off, but the color

My next step usually involves a sanding bar to loosen it up, but if you've

The past few years, for TD ships I've built removable G10 plug-in nose
skegs. The blades weigh about .30 oz, which means that if I wanted to
occasionally fly without one I'd have to add a bit of weight to the nose
to compensate. In addition, they're kind of a pain to build and install.

Building a new ship now and thought perhaps using a 1/4 carbon tube,
which would plug into a brass tube embedded in the nose and protrude about
1-1/2, would be a cleaner solution. The actual skeg weight is negligible
(.05 oz) so flying without it would require no rebalancing, plus it's a
near no-brainer to build. Might be just a tad less dangerous, too.

Anyone noted any detriments of using a carbon tube?

For got Tom. You don't wont to be longer than an 1 from the end of the rod
to the nose cone. If you go much over an inch you will start to see
breakage especially in shortly cut grass where the rod is sticking into the
grass roots or if there is a gravel base to the grass.

[RCSE] Timer for Fresno Classic

Is anyone planning on going to the Fresno Classic 4/2-3 that has not found a
timer yet? If so I need one and would be glad to time with you. I'm on Ch

[RCSE] Escape Lt. (The real Big Blue)

2005-03-13 Thread mpodder
Hi All
It seems that with all the talk about Lt. moldies that the Muller Escape Lt.
(the true blue and orange Escape Lt. is only available from
http://www.aero-model.com/ ) is being over looked. I have two of them and
at 67 oz. (that's right both of them) they are the stiffest and most
durable Lt. I have ever owned. Also there is an available two bar ballast
system of 9 oz. and 26 oz. Yep a Lt. that is strong enough to carry 26 oz.
of ballast. Do you need 26 oz. of ballast? Probably not but it's nice to
know it's that strong.

The only draw back to the plane is the rudder is a little small for US TD.
So I made a larger rudder for it. You can see it at
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3174690#post3174690 .

NO!! the blue doesn't disappear in the sky and the orange on the bottom is
almost iridescent in the sun. In fact this is the only plane I've had for
years that I didn't have to put a stripe on the bottom of the wing and
flashers on the leading edge to find it up high.

I love my Big Blues

PS: I know one person out there that ought to get one just so he would be
all blue through and through :-))

Re: [RCSE] Escape Lt. (The real Big Blue)

2005-03-13 Thread mpodder
Pat you are right that there are many Muller dealers and Skip Miller is a
very good person to deal with. But the only place you will get the true Blue
Lt., 67 to 68 oz., tiplet uncut (mold mark shows but not cut through),
tiplet servo pocket unfinished to save weight, tiplet wiring not installed
to save weight, boom and tail lightened but extra Kevlar from nose to behind
wing joiner for spot landings is http://www.aero-model.com/ This is not a
standard Escape with a little lighter lay-up as Skips Escape Lt are (most 75
oz at best) but a specially ordered plane by Aero Models.

You won't get it any where else and if it's not Blue and Orange it's not the
real deal.

Maurice,
Aero-Model not the only place to get Muller Products, heck they are not
even the best place to get them. Skip Miller carries the complete Muller

[RCSE] Chanllenging Saturday contest in Bakersfield (Escape Lt. wins)

2005-02-20 Thread mpodder
Hi All
Bakersfield has one of the few Saturday contests held on a monthly bases and
this one was very challenging.

It had been raining for 2 days and it was still raining Saturday morning
when we (the faithful and stalwart) arrived at the field around 9 am. By 10
am the rain stopped but up came a wind (steady 8 mph gusting to 11mph) from
the wrong direction which made all the launch and land down wind. Flights
were 3/5/3/5/5 and lift was spotty to non existent. In fact is was so
challenging that some good pilots with good planes (Pike Superior, Nyx even
a Super V) couldn't make 3 min.

I started with 9 oz of ballast (77 oz) in my Escape Lt. but found it flew
better without it (68 oz) and finished the contest that way. Luck was on my
side. I made all my landings, only missed time on the last flight and the
Escape Lt. brought home the win.

Something to see was Dan Chandler sloping his Pike Superior of the edge of a
building at about 100' for over 3 min. He took second.

If you want to fly contest on Saturday Bakersfield is the place to be.
Every third Saturday of the month.

Come and join us next month on the 19th.

Re: [RCSE] ATTN: Sharon 3.7 x-tail owners, need input

2005-02-18 Thread mpodder
Hi Stan
For me the best all around ship is the new Escape Lt. from Aero Model
http://www.aero-model.com/ProductDe...x?productID=429 It only weighs 68 oz
(it will go up on a good hi-start or a weak winch with no problem) but can
carry, safely, up to 24 oz. of ballast. So you have a plane that is light
enough for the deadest days and strong enough to carry 9 or 24 oz. (this is
the 2 ballast bar set available from Aero Model for $49.00) of ballast for
the windiest days. I love the plane and have 2. You can see them and the
slight mods that I made to them on rcgroups/thermal/Escape Lt. or use the
link below. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...690#post3174690

Had all but decided on Tempest when the water got muddy. Someone(read
Edgar Soaring Junkie) suggested I consider the Sharon. So, I'm asking
for input. Probably the main criteria I have is that it be able to
hi-start. I do not have a winch readily available to me(and the club
winch has seen better days). I am able to get 23#'s of pull out of my hi
start. Which was adequate for my Artemis 5mph +, but really iffy for 1-3
mph.

That aside, does it require constant attention with the sticks? I'm a
Sunday Flyer and I am looking for 'relaxed' flying. I have some open
class flying experience. I have a Sun 3.2m electric powered by Hacker 50
that I am able to handle, but never really got comfortable with the
Artemis V tail.

Any and all suggestions would be appreciate.
Yes I'm the same guy who asked about the Tempest last week. Appreciate the
band width.

[RCSE] Lunch Zagi race at Fresno?

2005-02-11 Thread mpodder
Hi all
Would anyone be interested in having a Zagi race at lunch, Saturday, April 2
at the Fresno classic? If there is interest I could contact the CD to find
out if it would be ok.

I made a preliminary contact with Zagi and they said that they might donate
something for the prize.

This would be an any Zagi race (Zagi airframe with any power) and the format
would be discussed if there is interest.

 Lets see,
January 1, in Bloomington, Indiana, rain all day, temps just above
freezing, wins 10mph+...did I mention rain? Oh yeah I forgot it the clouds
were so low that the tops of the stadium parking lot light poles were often
invisible.

So launches were tap tap tap, off or lose your plane. Johnny Berlin has x
ray eyes and would lose his Duck for what seemed like more than a minute,
then we'd spot it floating off to one side.

Tasks were 4mins and even the guys with woody RES ships managed that.
Lets hope that a what $1,500 all up molded ship can get 5mins with a full
winch launch...in California.

Congrats Maurice on the win. But you'll have to watch your typing, you
posted that it was tough 5min rounds, when likely you must have meant 15's.
:-)

[RCSE] The Escapy wins

2005-01-15 Thread mpodder
Just had our first club contest of the year in Bakersfield and my new Escape
Lt. brought home the win.

It was a tough fought contest with 5 five min. flights. Because I had won
the last contest of the year I had to go first (club tradition) and the air
was terrible. I ended up 33 seconds short on the first round and as soon as
I landed here came the lift. End result was I had to make up 23 points from
the start but the Escape Lt. did it.

The last round battle was with Clarence Nickels but I beat him. How bad?
By 1 point. Yes after 5 rounds of 5 min flights in very hard air it ended
up a 1 point contest.

I've started building my second Escape Lt. but AeroModels was out of
rudders. So I decided to build one. George Joy had mention that they
perform better with a larger rudder so I decided to make one while waiting
for the molded one to arrive. You can see it on RCgroups under
Thermal-Escape Lt. or check it out at the link below. I'll be putting up
some build pics as I go along with this one.

Re: [RCSE] From a Piker to an Escapy

2005-01-05 Thread mpodder
I love my Pike Superior and have been flying it for 2 yrs. But it's really
hard to find a molded X-tail, with a strong wing below 10 oz wing loading
(the Escape is at 9.4) and especially that can be ballasted. Most of the
Super Lites have no ballast tube and say to be cautious about strong
launches. The Escape has a tube that accepts a 9 oz bar or a 24 oz bar. So
it can be flown from 9 to almost a 13 oz wing loading. Of course I wouldn't
want to push the Escape to hard or dork it to hard with the 24 oz bar in it.

Yep My Pike is strong as an Ox. One of the reasons is the Lt. has a all
carbon center panel. It is a stiff plane and it is defiantly a consistent
winner with expert or intermediate which can't be said about a lot of
planes.

Re: [RCSE] Dry up spilled CA??

Hi Brian
Easiest thing to do when you get your respirator is also bye a large can of
Acetone and some plastic gloves. It will cut the CA right away. But if the
surface would be damaged by the Acetone the only other option I know is to
wipe it with paper towels and then shot it with activator to get it over
with. Once its fumed out it should no longer cause the allergic reaction.

Subject: [RCSE] Dry up spilled CA??

Folks I'm very allergic to CA fumes..I do keep a 2 oz bottle in my
cupboard
to use OUTSIDE in front of a fan... (Foolish I know)
Lately I have been suffering the worst cold and cold symptoms I have ever
had...
This evening while looking in my cupboard I discovered I have
accidentally
knocked over my CA bottle..The lid came off and 1/2 the bottle of CA has
seeped out all over my cupboard...I have been breathing these fume for a
couple hours each evening and thinking I had the worst cold of my life...
Now that I have discovered this, what is the best way to delute, dry it
up, clean it up?? Any ideas.??
I'll have to go to Lowes and get a respirator to wear while trying to
clean it up..I have had to get out of there till I can clean it up with
out
breathing any more fumes..It is CA+ and is very sticky and still damp and
putting off plenty of fumes..
 Thanks for any ideas...Brian

Re: [RCSE] Transmitter bags

2004-11-13 Thread mpodder
Hi Jeff
You might want to consider these gloves. They work great and you don't have
to try and find the hole to stick your hand in to get to the stick after
launch. Plus your finger tips an thumb are still able to grip the fuse for
launch. If it's really cold once you get your plane settled you can take
your hands of the sticks just long enough to slip the ends over you fingers
and you
still have full feel on the thumb. I love them and there only $13.00.

Ok, a few years ago I saw some bags used for slope and foul weather
flying.
They were canvas with a window, and flannel inners... Cuffs to put your
hands in and fly.
Keeps hands nice and toasty.
Anyone know who makes them?

If they are no longer made, does anyone on this list own one?

Re: [RCSE] Recommended inexpensive 12v battery charger

2004-10-31 Thread mpodder
Be sure to bye the Wal-Mart deep cycle marine battery not the standard car
or truck battery. I have been using their largest, I believe it's the 29
series (210 reserve amps), for 5 years. They have a smaller 24 series that
is 110 amps. The charger is the EverStart for Boating/RV. It is a Fully
Automatic/Manual Battery charger and rated at 10 amps. It says it's for 12
volt Marine/Deep cycle batteries but it works well on any battery and is
stable enough to be used as a 12 volt DC power supply.

I am putting together my first winch. I'll be using a Walmart standard
battery to power it and need to purchase a charger. There are all kinds of
lead-acid battery chargers at Walmart. Unfortunately my regular fast
charger for my NiCads won't handle lead-acid, so I need to buy yet another
piece of equipment! :)

Are there things I should look for when looking at the various chargers?
I think the common brand is Schumacher and there are usually 3 - 5
different models on the shelf. I was looking to spend $50 or so.

Thanks in advance!

Re: [RCSE] Dual Rate / Exponential

2004-09-07 Thread mpodder
I use a Futaba 9CH with triple rate. I believe the ability to change rates
while in-flight is very useful especially in conjunction with exponential.

Though there are times when the full throw specified for a given model is
very necessary (recovering from mistakes, pop-offs, broken lines, crosswind
landings, ground effect on landing and many more), in most cases, without a
very light thumb, it's to much for general thermal flying. Dual rate (in my
case triple rate) in conjunction with exponential, when set up correctly,
can help to solves this problem.

The following is an example of a standard 6 servo set up that I use on my
Open Class Sailplanes. Though this example will show use of triple rate you
can set up almost the same with dual rate. You must be sure that
exponential and triple/dual rate are actuated by the same switch.

   TRIPLE/DUAL RATEEXPONENTIALUSE
First position on triple or dual rate/exponential switch:
Launch, Land and Turbulent air.
AILE -100% rt. -50 % lt. -50 %
ELE-100 %up -25 %down -35 %
RUD -100 %rt. -45 % lt. -45 %
Second position on triple or dual rate/exponential switch: Most
flight conditions.
AILE -70%rt. -0 % lt. -0 %
ELE-85 % up -15 %down -25 %
RUD -80 % rt. -25 % lt. -25 %
Third position on triple or dual rate/exponential switch:
Light thermal conditions.
AILE -55%rt. -20 % lt. -20 %
ELE-75 % up -10 %down -20 %
RUD -65 % rt. -10 % lt. -10 %

As you can see the exponential setting is reduced as the throw is reduce.
In this way you still retain good response. When the exponential cut-off
point is reached (about 1/2 stick on most transmitters) full response is
restored.

My conclusion:
The use of Triple/Dual rate in conjunction with Exponential helps to
overcome many of the problems that result from to much or to little control
throw for a specific situation. I believe if it used correctly it can help
many improve their flying skills.

Just what I think.

Subject: [RCSE] Dual Rate / Exponential

Got a bit of a debate going locally on the merits of dual rate and
exponential. Some folks like it, some don't. Any comments from the exchange
on this one? We were thinking about doing an overview article for RCSD but
the opinions are mixed and strong. Looking for any feedback from users or
non-users. If the article is written, I'll provide attribution as
appropriate.

For the record, I use negative exponential for ailerons on launch and when
working real light thermals. My normal control authority is fast so this
helps with over controlling in touchy situations. I'm told this is wimping
out but it seems to work for me.

On-line or off-line comments welcome.

Re: [RCSE] Launches are terrible

2002-04-29 Thread mpodder

I had the same problem with a plane and was at the point were I was
puting down trim on launch and it still was hit and miss on
launches. Then one of the members in our club in Bakersfield asked
is your tow hook open or closed? What he ment was is the angle of
you the hook portion of the hook more than 90 deg. (open) or les than
90 deg. (closed) to the bottom of the fuse. If the hook is open
(more than 90) it's possible to pop off every time even though the
plane is set up correctly. I now have bent my hooks to about 80 deg.
to the bottom of the fuse and can go up with the nose pointing up
with out fear of a pop off. I hope this helps.

excellent flyer, when I can get it in the air. However, in the
many months
that I have had it, I've had about 75% of my launches end in pop-
offs. I am
fast reaching a point of total disgust. I must be doing something
wrong but
have not a clue as to what. The guys in the club are helping all
they can
but we're not making any progress.

The spec calls for a 5-1/6 CG (from LE) with a conservative
position being
5-1/16. I started out there and over time I ended up with the CG
at 4-7/8
with the tow hook about 1/4 in front of that. Getting tired of the
pop-offs, I decided to start over again. I moved the CG back to 5-
1/6 and
the tow hook has been moved back as well. The tow hook, being 1/4
to 3/8
in front of the CG is probably further ahead than it should be but
I would
expect that to flatten the launch. If anything, the launching has
gotten
 worse.

I use a 'launch mode' but do not any elevator adjustment in that
mode. I
have tried my launch mode with...

-flaps only, more flaps, more flaps
-flaps with a touch of aileron camber
-flaps and ailerons cambered together, more, more
-flaps with a little less aileron than flap.

No matter what I do, the plane seems to launch with the nose too
high and
almost always pops off at some point (usually at a lower height but
sometime
when it starts to arc over). The only elevator I add during the
launch, if
any, is a little down in some sort of vain effort to prevent the
nearly
 inevitable pop off.

I even get a popoff some of the time with a full pedal launch.

 HELP!
