Hey Mark, have fun. Like with Stephen Blair, Luc-Eric Rousseau, Halfdan, Chinney and all the others who contributed positively to Softimage´s image and actual functionality, I´m sure you´ll land somewhere where it´s appreciated and fells like making it home. Thanks for the support and funny videos. I imagine it would have also been fun watching you use the inevitable Mayax sucessor in one of your demos, too. Thanks guys - these are good suggestions. Re: A list like this one but for Maya
No such thing. Your best bet is a mix of cgsociety, most active Maya forum around to date I believe, Maya beta forums (plenty invites from AD staff here and elsewhere have been offered) and scavenging rigs and plugins (most of which are frankly atrocious, but there are plenty gems out there). The area is also active, but it would make a misanthropist of Gandhi. there is an old maya mailing list, it's the google group called maya_he3d it's called that way because it's a migration of the highend3d.com maya mailing list. it's been very low volume. Hi Angus, Blackginger do not really use Maya at all - they used to use it for Ncloth, but are now using Marvelous Designer. They use Softimage for everything up to end of animation, where they use Houdini for VFX and rendering in Mantra - they have been that way for about 4 -5 years now. Re: A list like this one but for Maya
The old Maya mailing list is cool but the beauty of a Softimage to Maya list would be artists who are experienced in both Soft + Maya teaching you where the equivalent buttons/methods are. The 'Salvage the list' thread isn't great as its already emotionally charged by title. A Softimage to Maya list was made but maybe it would add to the fear of community migration. https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!forum/softimage2maya So a [OTMaya] tag or [TOMaya] tag sounds like a good idea. It could create problems for new posters who aren't aware of a tagging system but nothing to lose sleep over. Re: MODO XSI layout and Shorcut keys
@Peter: what do you mean by 'Simple Select?' @David: yes this is what I meant by 'partial' success... the mouse input preset is really for navigation only. I don't think it attempts to translate the keyboard shortcuts. And to the question about a keyboard remapper in Modo You have two options: 1) The Input Editor gives you access to all of that. /Menu Bar System Input Editor/. Unlike the Soft equivalent, this doesn't present you with a keyboard representation. It's a massive, filterable table that lets you assign any command (with args if you like) to any key combination. 2) On-the-Fly: - Run a tool or command - Pull up the cHist (Command History). Most layouts have a little command line entry in the very bottom right of the UI. Drag the divider above it to expand the full command history. - Find the command you just fired, right-click on it, and choose 'Map Command to Key' Any customizations you make to the keyboard mapping will be automatically saved */when you close the app/*, unless you go to /File Config Save/. -Tim On 3/6/2014 6:14 PM, Peter Agg wrote: Another navigation tip: For some reason that God-forsaken trackball rotation setting is in the Open GL menu. @Peter: what do you mean by 'Simple Select?' Basically, when you aren't clicking on a manipulator I like the Maya-style of being able to select other objects. The equivalent in Soft is setting PreferencesToolsTransformClick Outside Manipulator to 'Select Tool'. I suspect that it's just the way Modo works though (like that weird 'Rick Click to Lasso' style of selection) and I'll have to get used to should I ever start using it properly. Re: MODO XSI layout and Shorcut keys
There is a feature in Modo called 'Select Through' that is enabled by default, so that if you're in Item mode, select an object, transform it, then click on another object, you're still in whatever transform tool you were in, but your selection has changed. Just keeps you from having to drop and reactivate the tool you were using. Now the transform tools themselves don't require you to be interacting with an actual handle, so in the case of the Move tool, you could very well click off somewhere in the viewport and move the item. But if a different item is under your cursor when you click, it will select that item instead. You can disable this if you like by going to the Lists tab (3 over from Properties, along the right), then in the Pipeline section, with your tool active, right click on the tool's entry in the Pipeline view and uncheck 'Select Through'. Not sure if that's what you're looking for? -Tim On 3/7/2014 9:02 AM, Peter Agg wrote: @Peter: what do you mean by 'Simple Select?' btw, we can host a softimage-to-maya list, but I just think it's a little early to be doing that. in my opinion, a lot of people using Softimage also use Maya occasionally, so it's beneficial to talk about Maya here - even for the people that won't be doing that transition. Re: Just a thought - I hear the framestore use an ancient version of maya......
I'd say pretty likely after two or three versions of Windows. Not to mention when it happens you'll be stuck with whatever version and Microsoft doesn't support them anymore. It usually ceases support about ten years after each release, after which you no longer get security updates and if you're online you might as well have a hack me! sign stuck on your back. To put things in perspective, WinXP is ending support this April: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ca/windows/lifecycle Here's a thought experiment for you: Imagine Soft had died years ago and XP was the only version it ran in and Win7/8 gave errors. :( Now imagine the latest cool helpful software, say the latest version of ZBrush, no longer ran in XP in the latest version (because who uses that, right?) Now you're gonna have to keep one OS for your Soft antiques and one for the modern stuff. That's not gonna be fun. Granted this won't happen for several years, but better learn new platforms now before you're dead in the water. I would actually really really like that, Luc-Eric. We'll be transitioning to Maya here and we'll need some help translating certain workflows. Maya feature request from Softimage users
Hey guys... What do you want to see added to Maya ? Autodesk is saying they will add Softimage features to the other packages... What is that ? As a Rigger, here is what I will miss the most - Gator - ICE : Especially to create custom deformers - Proper weights painting tools - Weights Editor ! - The Operator Stack, reorder, delete operator... - Being able to change modeling whith Envelope, Shapes already applied to the mesh - Blend shape workflow I would really like to hear Autodesk plan to incorporate some of those features in Maya. I'm guessing there not all super easy to merge, but some of them would be considered as amazing new feature by the Maya users. J/

Re: Maya feature request from Softimage users
When I had to move over to Maya, Gator, ICE, the weights painting tool and the Weights Editor were definitely the most missed. So missed that I would prototype deformers in ICE and convert them in code for Maya. I also wrote a small workflow to allow me to paint the weights and to model corrective shapes in Softimage, to then import them back in Maya. But for the operator stack, I don't think you'll be able to get a such thing. There's actually one UI that shows an operator stack in Maya with the possibility to reorder deformers but it is more a failed attempt than a proper working tool. And I'm not even sure if it would work out with the nodal structure that Maya relies on. As for changing the model in a rig, it is just a node to update. So theorically it's simple but of course it breaks all the deformers applied to it. Hence the need like in every software that I know of to have a clean workflow to easily export/import/convert mesh attributes. Or maybe have I already forgot how Softimage works? :) On 7 March 2014 11:59, Jeremie Passerin gerem@gmail.com wrote: Hey guys... What do you want to see added to Maya ? I'm guessing there not all super easy to merge, but some of them would be considered as amazing new feature by the Maya users. Re: Maya feature request from Softimage users
You nailed right there Jeremie, basically being flexible when rigging, every day I go splitting geometry, regatoring meshes, and merging again, transfering everything seamlessly. Multi attribute editor, it's really stupid that when you select multiple things you only see one at a time in the attribute editor, there is the spreadsheet editor but that sucks in comparison. Re: Script check if xsi is rendering?
there is a save scene as command but it won't let you save outside a SI project structure. You can save your scene to a different name by adding a version number, date, or whatever. It seems that we'll have a backup option without changing the current scene in the last version of SI. Anyway the main issue with it is that it interrupts if a render is in progress, preview/frame/render region, so is there anyway to check if a render is in progress? Or if the region is open/preview window open? Cheers Simon Simon Reeves London, UK si...@simonreeves.com www.simonreeves.com www.analogstudio.co.uk

1. A totally new and coherent interfase. 2. The same selection object component behavior. 3. That if you select an item it will stay selected until you deselected. 4. An M tool 5. The same shape system of Softimage. 6. Stacks 7. Ability to have the same Softimage keyboard shortcuts layout. 8. Hide all the connections in the Channels/Layers Editor 9. Redisgn the graph editor behavior. 10. Ability to lock the propoerties of the object you are editing no matter what other object you selected. 11. Active mouse over window 12. Render region 13. Pass phylosofphy as the one in Softimage 14. If you make a connection, ability to write expressions there instead of build an intrincated node laberynth. 15. Object to have only one node, not the object and shape node. 16. Ability to use any object to envelope 17. Implicit objects 18. Operators Well just for a start. and the rest others mentioned. I know none of us are happy, but I feel like I ought to point out that Max has a lot of these things. The operator stack in Max works quite well. Sure, Soft had a lot of things that Max lacked, but Max has a lot that Soft lacked. Ephere's Lab provides at least some of the ICE functionality as well: https://www.ephere.com/plugins/autodesk/max/lab/ On Fri, 7 Mar 2014, Christopher Crouzet wrote: When I had to move over to Maya, Gator, ICE, the weights painting tool and the Weights Editor were definitely the most missed. Max.. heh.. please.. when it comes to rigging and character animation well animation at all Max is nightmare.. I know a LOT of animators, my self included that hates animating in Max more then even working in Maya. I even turned down a lot of work because it is Max based.. character animation and Max no thank you... In Maya you can at least animate... once you get to working rig that is... but in Max.. ugh! Re: Maya feature request from Softimage users
My advice to Autodesk, as we all know they are not selling their patents, intellectual property, etc, bla, bla. Although they could sell Softimage to another company and still charge them for exploting all this patents, etc. and enjoy of the earnings without putting a dime in Softimage, will be: Leave Softimage 2015 as it is with fixing minor bugs, or not even that. Just leave it as it is. And at a devs pace start integrating all of these features into a new redisigned DCC tool, that will bring the gap of the artists using Maya and the artists using Softimage. Give it a new name, and then put to rest Maya and Softimage.
