FREAKIN' Adobe!!!

2010-08-21 Thread Cruz, Jaime
How does one get the latest Flash Player for Seamonkey? They've changed
their *&#$ing site so that it wants to install an "Add On" to Seamonkey,
which won't install because it's not FireFox.

I changed the setting to bypass Compatibility checking so it installs...
but it won't RUN because it says you're not running Firefox!!

They USED to have a web link where you could get the Windows Installer
file directly, but that link has disappeared. How the *&^# are we
supposed to get the latest fixes if those JACKASSES take away the
SIMPLEST way of installing... you know... the way that actually WORKED???

Now you know why Steve Jobs considers Adobe Flash to be Evil.

While I don't whole-heartedly subscribe to that notion I kind of agree.
Adobe's management of the whole thing sucks.

The actual Flash Player Plugin that is installed On Mac Goes in either
the username (name you gave computer) > Library > InternetPlugins
Directory or the main Library > InternetPlugins (which lets all user
use it. and any Web browser that is capable of using Flash will use it
from the internet plugin the Folder. So it works at least for
SeaMonkey, FireFox, Camino, Safari, Opera, OmniWeb and iCab.

NOTE: All initial folders in all HTTP and HTTPS links end with a forward
slash.

To correct the link to your website so that it works properly in ALL
browsers (never assume a browser tries a link by adding a forward slash)
just add the slash. You're making more work for ALL servers when you do
leave off the trailing forward slash, because it causes the following to
occur on ALL servers:

1) A physical logging of the action to a file,
2) A redirection to the proper link.

You can still download and install manually here:

For the Plug-in:
http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe

For Active X:

This comes from the following Adobe page for Troubleshooting
Flash installs:

They hide the stuff now, but it still exists.

I'm seeing a great amoung of blather in this thread that is quite
contrary to my experience.

First of all, when I go to , the
installation file downloads to whatever folder I specify. It does not
install until I execute that file.

I actually did download Flash 10.1 (actually 10.1.82.76) from that URI
using SeaMonkey 2.0.6 exactly a week ago. I then installed it for
SeaMonkey without any problems. Finally, I archived the installation
file, which I do for ALL software and updates that I download and install.

Note that the installation itself does not involve SeaMonkey. It only
involves executing the installation file. I generally terminate all
other applications while installing new or updated software. I
definitely would not use SeaMonkey's Add-ons Manager since Flash is not
an add-on.

Today, I again downloaded the installation file from the same URI. This
time, I generated both MD5 and SHA1 comparisons between the newly
downloaded file and last week's archived file. The two files are
identical. This means you too should be able to download the file via
SeaMonkey and install it.

Yes, Flash MIGHT set its own cookies. However, you can go to

and set Flash not to set cookies.

It won't download from Adobe to SM 1117. It does nothing.
I already have 10.1 that I got from another web source
so was just trying once more to see if things have changed.

Yes. It's on the "Global Storage Settings" and "Website Storage
Settings" panels. Move the slider on each to the far left.

It's not intuitive, perhaps because Adobe generally wants Flash cookies
to be allowed. However, if you allow no storage space for cookies, they
cannot be set.

I'm not sure, but Flash 10.1 might not be compatible with SeaMonkey
1.1.17.

Go to your SeaMonkey menu bar and select [Edit > Preferences >
Browser > Downloads]. Please describe the settings for each checkbox

Windows users can install BetterPrivacy 1.48.2 to control Flash cookies.

Perhaps searcing for *.sol files and deleting all under an 'Adobe'

The .sol file contains the options you set using the settings manager.

Get your terminology straight. Flash is a plugin not an extension. It

The terminology IS correct. The Adobe site wants to install an extension
called the Adobe DLM. If it works the way the ActiveX component on
Explorer works, once the extension is installed, then IT downloads the
plugin. I don't want or need the bloody extension, I just want the
plugin. I don't need an extension to install the plugin for me. I just

FWIW, my experience is similar to David's. I went to the Adobe website
and downloaded the installer, which I then ran without SeaMonkey even
open. It worked fine on the first attempt.

Of course, they do "recommend" that instead of saving the installer, you
just click "run." I didn't do that, and it didn't hurt me none.

There was no extension and no Adobe DLM.

As I indicated in an earlier reply in this thread, I updated Flash from
10.1 r53 to 10.1 r82 on 15 Aug (9 days ago).

To do that, I went to the Adobe download site, used SeaMonkey to
download install_flash_player.exe, terminated SeaMonkey, and installed
the new version. There was NO extension, NO involvement by SeaMonkey
during the execution of install_flash_player.exe, and NO problem.

Then, on 22 Aug (only 2 days ago), I again used SeaMonkey to download
install_flash_player.exe from the Adobe download site. Using both MD5
and SHA1 hashes, I determined that this newly downloaded file was
identical to the file I archived after my 15 Aug installation.

If you failed to read my prior reply that described this, then you are
the one who is ignorant.

Get your terminology straight. Flash is a plugin not an extension. It
doesn't even reside in the SeaMonkey directory or in your profile.

The terminology IS correct. The Adobe site wants to install an extension
called the Adobe DLM. If it works the way the ActiveX component on

plugin. I don't want or need the bloody extension, I just want the

I don't know why, but my experience with the Adobe Flash download is not
the same as yours. When I go to the web page you list above, I'm greeted
with Install Adobe Flash Player and a yellow box that says Agree and
install now. When I click on that box, Adobe tries to install the Adobe

fails because it says Incompatible Extension, Adobe DLM 1.6.2.90 could
not be installed because it is not compatible with SM 2.0.6.

I'm also using XP with all the updates, and SM 2.0.6.

When I go to and click on the "Agree

file-selection window titled "Enter name of file to save to...". In
that window, I navigate to my standard [D:\downloads\software] directory
to save the installer file.

Extensions (enabled: 7)
* Adblock Plus 1.2.2 (http://adblockplus.org/)

* Flashblock 1.3.16 (http://flashblock.mozdev.org/)

* Show Password On Input 0.1.3
(https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/addon/6143/)
* ShowIP 0.8.19 (http://code.google.com/p/firefox-showip/)

I temporarily disable Flashblock to test the new installation of Flash.
 Disabling Flashblock before going to
has no impact on downloading the
installer file.

I went to the SeaMonkey menu bar and selected [Edit > Preferences]. On
the Preferences window, I selected [Browser > Helper Applications].
Scrolling down the list of helpers to where "Content Type" is
"Application", I see "Action" is "Save File".

I have no idea how to add or delete entries in the list of helpers or
how to add actions to those available in the selection list for each

You might use the SeaMonkey Add-ons Manager to disable the Adobe DLM
extension. (Don't delete the extension yet, in case you want to keep
it.) Then try the Adobe downloads page again to see if you can download
Flash to install independently of SeaMonkey.

Yes, sorry I missed a step.

What are the MIME type and extension? I have at least a dozen types that
begin with "application/...," and most of them are not applications in
the sense you intend. For example, there's a Flash video type listed as
"application/flv." On my system, the MIME type for exe files is
"application/x-msdownload."

I have no idea how to add or delete entries in the list of helpers or
how to add actions to those available in the selection list for each
entry.

In v.1, clicking an entry highlights it and enables the "Edit..." and
"Remove" buttons. The "New Type..." button is always enabled.

I suppose the functionality is similar in v.2, which I don't have.

The hard part for me when listing new types from scratch has always been
specifying the MIME type (I don't always know what it is). But SM saves
me the trouble if I encounter a new type and it prompts me, saying "I
don't know what to do with this..." If I have a policy I want to enforce
permanently, I just check the box "Always perform this action..." and SM
does the rest.

thought I made it clear but I will say it again, the install of the
Adobe DLM fails and that is where the Flash install fails. I found the
.exe file for Flash, I'm updated and I've spent more time on this minor
problem than it took to find a work around.

I was curious as to why some of us get a different result when we all
click on the same link but as I said, Flash is updated and it looks like
my curiosity on this subject will not be satisfied. No big deal.
