Just tried safe mode. Clicking got me the spinner, which is a step in
the right direction (normally I get nothing at all), but after a few
minutes it reverted to the regular cursor.

Mousing over the video does change the cursor to a hand, as if it were a
link, but clicking the link has no effect.

There is nothing under [Edit > Preferences] to control HTML5
media. You

will have to request about:config. The preference variable is
media.autoplay.enabled. "True" enables it; "false" disables it.

Already true by default, no help there. Thanks anyway.

Is media.webm.enabled set 'true'?

Also true by default, yes.

Just tried the url above on IE 9 and it locked up the laptop for about 45

settings using the menu?

No.

I'm on 2.39, but the behavior has been consistent for over a year: I go
to a site, I want to change the cookie policy for that site, so I make a
selection from the Tools | Cookie Manager menu, and nothing happens. No
error message, no noise, no complaint of any kind; SM simply ignores the
selection and continues as before with the previous selection.

The only way around it is to go into the chrome version of the Cookie
Manager and change the policy there, or else tell SM to forget about
this domain (which is an unnecessarily cumbersome and counterintuitive
process, BTW). Having done that, I can go to the page in question and
set a new policy from the menu (SM will honor a new setting only if
there is no old setting).

FWIW, I did find a solution to the USAToday site: Tell SM to forget the
cookie policy for usatoday.com, allowing it to revert to my default
policy (first-party session cookies only), whereupon the site set some
20 cookies and started playing the videos. I guess the other people who
could play them had more lenient cookie policies, and the one who
couldn't was also blocking cookies.

It's [been] fixed already for some time. Check Bug 1188348:
. All which is
needs is a (hopefully) final review and checkin of the source code.
This patch needed string changes so it is unlikely that it will
appear before Seamonkey 2.44. There is a how to in it so you can
change your omni.ja und put the fixes in yourself. It's compatible
with Seamonkey 2.39+

I was unable to test idn domains and some weird permissions might not
work. If you patch it and find something let me know and I will fix
it if I can.

Thanks.

Does the fix also include the UI under Tools | Cookie Manager, where the
user used to be able to change the policy for the current domain on the
fly? At present, selecting anything except "Manage Stored Cookies" has
no effect.

Yes, we both understand what "first-party cookies" means.

To enable Flash, go to [Tools > Add-ons Manager] on the SeaMonkey
menu bar, scroll down to Flash, and select Always Activate from the

To enable HTML5 Media, request about:config. Set
media.autoplay.enabled to True.

Both are already set as you describe; the media.autoplay.enabled key is
True by default.

This is what I meant by "Cookies allowed only from the requested
domain". On the Cookies pane of the Preferences window, this is the
radio button for "Allow cookies for the originated website only (no
third-party cookies)".

To manage individual cookies, I use the PrefBar extension, having
imported into that extension the Permissions Menu menulist from

installation, I renamed this menulist as "Managers".

I have the same version of Flash but do not have Shockwave.

To enable Flash, go to [Tools > Add-ons Manager] on the SeaMonkey menu

It is indeed likely your settings. Here is my somewhat restricted
configuration:

Windows 7 Ultimate SP 1 (x64)
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:42.0) Gecko/20100101

"Advertise Firefox compatibility" disabled
Popups blocked
AdBlock Plus and Secret Agent extensions both enabled
Images from all domains enabled
Cookies allowed only from the requested domain

I am able to play the various videos with either Flash enabled or HTML5
Media enabled.

OK, my corresponding info:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:42.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/42.0
SeaMonkey/2.39

"Advertise Firefox compatibility" enabled

Unrequested popups blocked

AdBlock Plus normally enabled, but disabled for testing purposes

Load all images

First-party session cookies only (Edit | Preferences | Privacy &
Security | Cookies); Block Cookies from This Website (Tools | Cookie
Manager). As you know, the cookie manager is broken, so I can't change
the setting, and usatoday.com is not specifically listed at
chrome://communicator/content/permissions/cookieViewer.xul or
chrome://communicator/content/permissions/permissionsManager.xul.
Clearing cache and cookies and reloading does not help.

Shockwave Flash 20.0.0.306 and Shockwave for Director 12.2.3.183 both
installed, both show as current. Can't find any setting to enable Flash
vs. HTML5 vs. both.

When I click the "Play" button, nothing happens. No activity in the
status bar, no spinner, no throbber, nothing. Any ideas?

Looks like that was it - disabled Adblock Plus and it's working. Thanks.

Flash is blocked by Mozilla as even 296 has a zero day vulnerability. I
don't know how you are getting them to play. For me, Sea Monkey reports
Flash 296 blocked. Fx can't even check plugins currently as Mozilla
apparently messed up the block. At least SeaMonkey can do a plugin
check currently. Even if Flash works for you it should be disabled
until Adobe issues a new update. The zero day exploit is being ACTIVELY
seen on Fx, SeaMonkey and IE. Disable Flash on all browsers until Adobe
issues a patch this week.

ANOTHER one!?

I'm making no special effort to get them to play. My SeaMonkey has not
tried to block Flash, and I haven't overruled it. I do have 296, and
when I updated just now, that's what Adobe installed.

So the question is, what have YOU done that your SM is blocking Flash?

For several days now, plugin check has not worked at all on Fx various
versions (or Pale Moon) and two different Oses. Plugin check does work
on Sea Monkey and Flash 296 is bright red and indicates dangerous.
Maybe it is not yet FORMALLY blocked as I know it is not yet on the
Block List but when I see a plugin that is notorious for vulnerabilities
showing bright red warning at Mozilla plugin page, while my other
plugins are green with nice checkmarks by them, I'm not going to even
try to use Flash. Red means STOP. The warning is NOT yellow. Yellow
would indicate use at your own risk. Red means DANGEROUS Do NOT use
and I interpreted it to mean it was blocked. It should be blocked if
the warning is red. I have all pugins set to ASK and I have no
intention of saying yes to Flash at any website until Adobe updates it.
(I have disabled Flash in IE 10 and 11).

That's all well and good, and probably good advice. But it's not what
you said:

Flash is blocked by Mozilla as even 296 has a zero day
vulnerability.

As far as I can tell, /Mozilla/ is not blocking Flash, /you/ are. So
none of your readers should have any expectation that /Mozilla/ will
protect them in this situation. Mozilla will only warn the user and
leave it to the user's discretion and ingenuity to block Flash.

Of course, that could change. But at the moment, Mozilla is taking no
blocking action as it does with earlier versions of Flash.

https://blocklist.addons.mozilla.org/en-US/seamonkey/blocked/p828

The red tile you see at the plugins check page just means the plugin is
outdated. Which is a weird thing for Mozilla to say since 16.0.0.296 is
the very latest version from Adobe.

There appears to be considerable differences among Seamonkey users on whether
the video can be played. It will not work for me and I have tested for Helpers
both Windows Media Player and Quicktime 7.7.3. Seamonkey shows that video/mp4
points to these helpers.

If I look at the page source with Seamonkey, the entry for mp4 says
video controls
source src= type=video/mp4
Your browser does not support playing HTML5 videos.
/video

This may be the problem although I thought that Seamonkey would handle HTML5
sites.

SeaMonkey plays HTML5 just fine but NOT in full screen due to a long
standing bug that is not going to be fixed. I can see the video just
fine on SM 2.26 on Win 8 Pro as long as I don't expand it to full
screen. I can't see any video there though on Fx 24.5 ESR as the video
never loads. It loads instantly on SM. Only flash video plays full
screen on SM with no problems. The devs simply don't have the time to
fix the HTML5 full screen bug. This bug is one reason Fx is my default
browser instead of SM.

When I rebooted to 14.04, Firefox couldn't play the video in window. I
added just about every codec that I could think of... Finally figured it
out for the FF part: my 12.04 has gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg (which includes
the h.264 decoder) installed, my 14.04 didn't.

Ubuntu 14.04 doesn't provide gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg in any of the
Trusty/14.04 repositories. So, I added the mc3man ppa:
http://www.webupd8.org/2014/03/get-firefox-and-phonon-gstreamer-to.html
and as soon as I did, Firefox played the video w/o issue. Now I just
have to figure out why SeaMonkey 26 (32bit and 64bit) doesn't for me.

Note: all versions of Firefox and SeaMonkey are the most current
released Mozilla builds - not distro builds.

My SeaMonkey is an openSUSE distro build.

OpenSUSE builds support gstreamer0.10:
https://build.opensuse.org/package/view_file/openSUSE:12.1:Update/seamonkey.1041/mozilla-gstreamer-760140.patch
and supposedly preparing to port to gstreamer1:
https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Goals_13.1/Port_to_GStreamer_1.0

I wonder if this has anything to do with the Mozilla builds:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=886180
Disable gstreamer in SeaMonkey

This doesn't seem to be a codec problem per se, as on my Mac I can play
the video just fine in Safari 6.1.3. Both SeaMonkey and Safari share the
same codec and plug-in libraries.

I've just shown that it *is* a codec problem on linux. Going a bit
further, the SeaMonkey linux builds disable gstreamer:

Configure arguments
...
--with-ccache=/usr/bin/ccache *--disable-gstreamer* --disable-pulseaudio
...

It is not disabled in the Firefox linux build:
Configure arguments

--enable-update-channel=release --enable-update-packaging
--with-google-api-keyfile=/builds/gapi.data --enable-crashreporter
--enable-release --enable-elf-hack --enable-stdcxx-compat
--target=i686-pc-linux --x-libraries=/usr/lib
--enable-warnings-as-errors --enable-official-branding
Probably due to this:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=794282
Enable GStreamer in official builds

I know nothing of the Mac builds, but you can check by having a look at
'about:buildconfig' (Configure arguments). Perhaps this may also be of
interest regarding Mac:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=851290
Use GStreamer on Mac for H.264/MP3/AAC playback (instead of AV Foundation)

I got it to work in IE using Windows Media Player as the helper app.
Still no luck in SM when I set WMP as the helper app. How do I set this
up in SM to work? Can I set the WMP plugin to be the helper?

I see what the problem is now. There is a text block to the left of the
map that one can see with Safari, but not with SeaMonkey or Firefox.
With those, all you get is the map. The only way I got a video to play
was by first clicking on View Gallery, then picking a picture, clicking
that to enlarge it, then clicking the play button. This is possible for
me only with Safari.

This may be true on your installation, but not on mine or many others.
Here, the text block (as you call it) or navigation panel (as I would
call it) is easily visible to the left of the map with no action on my
part other than loading the page.

I can hide the navigation pane (maximize the map) by clicking the at
the upper left corner of the map, and restore it by clicking the at
the upper left corner of the map.

Ditto with my SM 2.26B2 on Win7 installation but not with my Linux
installation as I'm missing some plug-ins!!

Sure, but playing the MP4 directly solves absolutely nothing because
that we know that pretty much any system can do. The issue is playing it

Furthermore, if I enable FlashBlock before starting the navigation to

By the way, my Helper Applications show VLC media player 2.1.3 for

I might (probably do?) have more that I don't recognize. Am I missing

No, I won't. In my Media tab, I have an icon, background and a butt-load

Well, that strikes this ignorant amateur as very odd -- it never

It's not on the map. Try looking on the left side of the screen for Near
Shore Buoy. Click on it. Go ahead, it won't hurt you. Then you should
see Latest Video, per the OP's original instructions. Clicking on that

Here, the text block (as you call it) or navigation panel (as I would
call it) is easily visible to the left of the map with no action on my

I can hide the navigation pane (maximize the map) by clicking the at

In theory, yes, but SeaMonkey devs removed the ability to manually
add/remove MIME types via the Helper Applications dialog. Now the only
way to do it would be to dig into your profile and edit mimeTypes.rdf. I
gave it the college try to fix this, but even though I was able to add
video/mp4 as a MIME type and set QuickTime plugin as the helper
application, the video frame still shows the same error.

Editing mimeTypes.rdf is messy and prone to error. If you go playing in
there, make a backup copy of the file just in case. Good luck with it.

Your browser does not support playing HTML5 videos.

SeaMonkey does handle HTML5 video, but not all HTML5 video is the same.
WebM and Ogg/Theora work fine. H.264/MP4 seem to be problematic. It is
the latter that is featured on the OP's site.

For what it's worth, Firefox 29.0 doesn't do it, either. So, yeah, this

Actually, you can edit existing entries in the prefs dialog, but I agree
it doesn't seem possible to add or delete entries.

To change the handler of a file type, select its entry at Edit |
Preferences | Browser | Helper Applications by clicking once. The name
of the handler becomes a button. Click the button and you get a
pull-down list, including the option Use other... If you don't see the
application you want to use in the list, click Use other... and select
the app there from among the ones the OS recognizes as capable of
handling the file type. OK out.

whether the video can be played. It will not work for me and I have
tested for Helpers both Windows Media Player and Quicktime 7.7.3.
Seamonkey shows that video/mp4 points to these helpers.

If I look at the page source with Seamonkey, the entry for mp4 says
 video controls
 source src= type=video/mp4
Your browser does not support playing HTML5 videos.
 /video

This may be the problem although I thought that Seamonkey would handle
HTML5 sites.

But the file in question is
http://wqdatalive.com/uploads/video/TREC/NOAA_RSC_A_2014_05_07_12_02_00.mp4,
so no HTML5 support is needed.

As a test, I switched my pref from VLC to WMP and the vid still played fine.

least try to play, but only with black screens.

This one? http://wqdatalive.com/public/55

Plays just fine in my SeaMonkey 2.25

How did you get this to work, since SM has problems with this type of
HTML5 video?

I have no idea.

I just set all my plugins to 'Never Activate', cleared cache and
cookies, quit SeaMonkey and restarted and the video still plays.

I think my SeaMonkey is broke.

Just conducted the same experiment with Firefox 29.0. Video plays just
fine with all three of my plugins (Java, Flash and Xine) disabled.

I got it to work in IE using Windows Media Player as the helper app.
Still no luck in SM when I set WMP as the helper app. How do I set this
up in SM to work? Can I set the WMP plugin to be the helper?

In theory, yes, but SeaMonkey devs removed the ability to manually
add/remove MIME types via the Helper Applications dialog. Now the only
way to do it would be to dig into your profile and edit mimeTypes.rdf. I
gave it the college try to fix this, but even though I was able to add
video/mp4 as a MIME type and set QuickTime plugin as the helper
application, the video frame still shows the same error.

Editing mimeTypes.rdf is messy and prone to error. If you go playing in
there, make a backup copy of the file just in case. Good luck with it.

So, do you know if it's possible to play these using SM?

My SM is using Apple's QuickTime as the helper app. Works fine.
