[Talk-hr] Sea Charts of Croatia updated
Hi! I updated the set of sea charts of Croatia. The are rendered with Smrender. http://www.abenteuerland.at/download/smrender/charts/croatia/ The charts are based on OSM/OSeaM data of 18th of July and include SRTM data (contour lines). They are rendered in traditional yellow map style and also in the style of Imray Tetra charts (style not complete yet). Best regards, Bernhard PS: Smrender is found at http://www.abenteuerland.at/smrender/ ___ Talk-hr mailing list Talk-hr@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-hr

The ODbL is just echoing the database directive. Insubstantial is much like fair use. The license should not attempt to define these terms. And the sharealike trigger is pulled whether the substantial data is already in OSM or isn't, but could be. Technically, any data that references an OSM foreign key could be in OSM. It sounds like you're confusing computer science and RDMS databases with the legal concept of a database. For the rest of this message, I'm talking about the legal concept of a database. Routes, in some cases, are of interest. What if the only meta information associated with routes is the users of another service and their opinions? Giving up user account information is obviously problematic for any organization, commercial or non-profit. Well there's a pretty strong precedent by the largest user of OSM data to not consider user data part of the same database as the map data: osm.org itself. osm.org users are more closely tied to the map database then any external service is likely to be, but they're treated as a collective databases. If they were one database then the user info would have to be distributed under the ODbL, or if the user data couldn't be distributed due to other laws (e.g. privacy laws), then the map data couldn't be distributed at all. Off hand, I can think of several databases stored in the same RDMS database on osm.org - user database - notes database - map database - GPX database - message database - oauth client database I fear the definition of a derivative work is akin to Justice Potter's famous construction, I know it when I see it. [...] I fear the definition of a derivative work is akin to Justice Potter's famous construction, I know it when I see it. Last time this issue was discussed on this list, last autumn, many people seemed to be in agreement that the current community guideline on substantial at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Open_Data_License/Trivial_Transformations_-_Guideline was too example-based and that what's needed was a statement of principle instead. Michael Collinson proposed the following wording: OpenStreetMap considers Open Data to be a usefully collected set of intelligently or machine-made physical observations only. Purely algorithmic augmentation of data and re-casting of data to use, store or transmit it in different manners is not part of the data IP. Share Alike may however apply to physical observations inside the augmented or re-cast data; in this case the physical observations must be provided to the public in a commonly used or documented open format as per ODbL clause 4.6b. This makes it clear that share-alike isn't triggered just by associating information (such as user accounts) with the map, but by the addition of observed physical features (routes being taken by users, perhaps?) A bunch of people expressed agreement with this at the time, but nobody has updated the wiki. Should I JFDI? Would anyone object? I see that most serious uses of OSM would be substantial. It's really the qualitative part that I find difficult to parse. It sounds like you're confusing computer science and RDMS databases with the legal concept of a database. For the rest of this message, I'm talking about the legal concept of a database. Thanks for drawing the distinction between database systems and databases in the legal sense. It seems the latter allows for arbitrary divisions of data, irrespective of database organization. Well there's a pretty strong precedent by the largest user of OSM data to not consider user data part of the same database as the map data: osm.org I'm glad to hear that. So, is it fair to say that, as an OSM database user, one can distinguish derivative and non-derivative data field by field, without considering the schema? That is, the derivative database is just that collection of fields that are considered derivative? This makes it clear that share-alike isn't triggered just by associating information (such as user accounts) with the map, but by the addition of observed physical features (routes being taken by users, perhaps?) I'm particularly interested in the application of the ODBL, in OSM's case, to routes. How are routes observed physical features? I understand that if one were to create an OSM-derived database of roadways that added on-street parking information, that that added data is an observed physical feature of those roadways that would trigger the sharealike provision. But how is it that routes - ordered collections of road segments - are considered derivative? And what distinguishes a derivative route from a non-derivative one? There are imho more important things to fix or optimize. I think that this is perhaps the crux of the problem. One gets very used to doing things a certain way, and when they change it gets very annoying when something does not now work. I can give a good example in Linux ... the way the scroll bars work on the side of a window has been changed by ONE of the style library teams. A little like double click no longer doing what you expect! Clicking on the scroll bar now works differently FOR SOME APPS. Fortunately it is possible to switch the new functionality off but why the was it allowed to be switched on by default in the first place :( Another area of the the same scroll bar is the stepper buttons top and bottom. Some people think they are pointless, but when one is working with directories with thousands of files in, being able to shuffle a little bit fixes a problem. Again, I can select a theme from users with a like preference and the buttons appear. I don't have to live with someone else's preferences. Changing functionality, such as how double click works, needs to have a very good reason for doing it, but where buttons appear and what buttons appear is just a matter of personal taste! Currently on touch screen devices there is a conflict between using touch to zoom the map, and using touch to expand the function areas, or expand the note box to because it's too small. THIS functionality may be part of leaflet, so that is the development team we need to be interacting with, or maintain a port of that code which we can tailor to our requirements. I personally have no interest in 'rails', I work exclusively in PHP on production sites, so I don't want my hands tied because 'rails' has changed the way something works. Just while I've been typing this it has come to mind that perhaps what I personally am looking for is a better organised cooperation between the teams that are building the tools we use rather than what appears on a single view of the data? Leaflet is supposed to be a 'library of mobile-friendly interactive maps', but it's that which is causing my problems with osrm, yours and the other options I'm playing with. Peter, This double click was an easy way to obtain the coordinates of an object and share the information with the others using the permalink. This functionnality does not exist anymore. I was probably missing the point that it actually has nothing to do 'rails-dev' ... Lester Caine wrote: Note that I'm not saying that the main map should change - this is mobile technology use, but personally I WOULD like to have the option to select the old style layout. It's not fundamental to how the map works - it's only a style sheet, and we could have several - including mobile centric ones? What rattles my cage is when someone else changes things that I'm naturally used to when there is no need to FORCE me to change - just put an option to select in! You could have several different stylesheet options, but every time anyone makes a simple code change to the site, it would then have to be tested against each one. Just look at the unintentional collateral damage from the recent changes (things like the search box not scrolling, text entry boxes not resizing) and multiply that by several stylesheets. We simply don't have enough developers for that. If you want it, you need to find more developers. And I hate to say it, but these recent threads are not really a very good way of saying hey, developers, come and help OSM, you'll be welcome here! We respect our developers!. So is there a way through? Of course there is. We have two on-site editors, iD and Potlatch. They do not do everything for everyone. No-one expects them to. Instead, the people who want MOAR STYLESHEETS (or moar zoombars, or moar tools, or whatever) use a separate editor. It's called JOSM. You may have heard of it. :) This is a great solution. It means power users get the tools they want, without making the online editors utterly bamboozling to the newbie. It means Java developers have an OSM project to get stuck into, even though the main site is Rails. It doesn't impose extra burdens on the site development team. And it's made possible because OSM is an open project with an open API, and we positively encourage this sort of thing. Why not do the same here? Get a few people together who want the zoom bar/old stylesheets/whatever. Build a power user's mapping site. Use PHP or whatever language you're comfortable with. Start small - just an instance with the features you really need. But it could grow to have oodles more tile layers, talk to the public OSRM API for routing, be tightly integrated with JOSM, all the stuff that we can't expose on osm.org for QC/scaling reasons but which would work fine on a more niche site. And if you have good ideas, some might filter back to osm.org, just as JOSM features occasionally pop up in P2 or iD. cheers Richard -- View this message in context: http://gis.19327.n5.nabble.com/New-technology-tp5770731p5770865.html Sent from the General Discussion mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

The latest changes have not been reflected in any other sites that I have scanned over the last couple of days, but I have no doubt some will change simply because they are reliant on 'current build' of leaflet or openlayers and are forced to follow - or fork? I agree with Martin that this is a great redesign. And we should see positively that so many people react to these redesigns. And let's hope we can have more positive / constructive discussions among contributors and developers. I understand that we should accept that some redesigns will affect the way we are doing things. At the same time, we have to think how people, sometimes less experimented, may use the OSM map for various usages. I might be a bit late since I was not there to propose modifications a few weeks ago. But still... The Share panel who replace the Permalink, is useful to communicate to others various informations. For example, it could be a store or a tourist bureau that wants to provide simply geolocated information. Also we often see OSM contributors exchanging links to discuss about various aspects of the OSM map. I propose below minor modifications to the Share panel that to my point of view would provide more flexibility to take account of the various usages. In this proposal, the Include marker appears only once and is used for both url links and Embedded HTML. And there is the possibility to add a descriptive about the marker. I would find it very very difficult to subject superficial design changes to a popular vote, these are matters of personal taste and work flow and it is very unlikely that we could reach any kind of consensus within a reasonable time frame, wit this thread. What would be nice if we could get to a state where changing the visual appearance of the main site would not be such a heavy weight task (at least not for the devs) and could happen substantially more often than once in a decade. The new icons and map controls are good and I'm getting accustomed to them, but the process by which they made it onto the site worries me. Mostly, it's because Saman opened his SotM-US talk with a blow it all up slide and finished with gamification that I'm uneasy with how we're treating the visual presentation of OSM.org. Gamification is a sad, sorry sideshow and we shouldn't do it; it only became a meme because Zynga made a zillion dollars and look how that turned out. Do we plan to follow through on gamifying the OSM UI as Saman suggested in his talk? I don't know, and I don't want to have to subscribe to Github pull requests to find out. Now high level goals and to a certain point functionality is something that, IMHO, is worth discussing with a large group, and we have ongoing discussions that cover exactly such territory. Besides what has been written here, there is a larger one on the German list about the potential gamification of OSM which shows that such a step is not simply a design question and definitely needs more community consensus if it should be seriously considered for implementation. As long as you don't need to 'pinch' to scale the area that is waiting for you to type the from location to get directions ... there is a whole raft of complications which need to be handled. When one is USED to simply hitting a spot on a screen to do something, when that disappears it IS confusing, and finding 'help' is even more difficult? So I get a phone call ... People are asking why I find the smartphone difficult to use with the new style. First I'm using Dolphin on an S4. Switching to 'full screen' ( it's another app you have to download and I have now !) then I get all of the buttons on right, but the tabs along the top are so small as to be difficult to read. The scale is covered by dolphins fancy extra functions button. Trying to navigate around with 'pinch' and 'slide' keeps bringing down the tab bar which seems to have a higher priority than the map move. In any case the bulk of the text on the screen is unreadable and I would prefer to have 'screen zoom' rather than 'map zoom' with map zoom just being on buttons. Moving the the 10 tablet, things are a lot better, and I would probably be better of using that in the car for navigation. I need varifocal glasses so the small fonts used on the S4 are generally a problem, and I've wasted a lot of time trying to make things better. I had the old N900 working well even with it's smaller screen, but then the tomtom was in car screen, and something that will not work with the S4 :( I think there are a number of problems with Locus as an interface between the map and routing, and I would not recommend it, so I need to try the alternatives. OSMAnd has been suggested, but I need to learn how to get it to use my own maps rather than having to pay them for maps. [talk-au] New tile rendering server (Experimental)
Hi Oceania (Talk-AU and nzopengis), I have just switched the default OpenStreetMap.org “Mapnik style” map tiles for tile.openstreetmap.org in the Oceania region across to our new rendering server. The new rendering server has been tested and is now ready for production. We’re migrating traffic over region-by-region and the Oceania region is the first to go live. The countries in the Oceania region affected are those with dark green links on this map: http://dns.openstreetmap.org/tile.openstreetmap.org.html In addition to new hardware, the rendering server also uses the new “openstreetmap-carto” stylesheets. These are a complete re-write of the XML stylesheets to use CartoCSS, making them easier for our cartographers to work with. Andy Allan’s great talk at State of the Map US described the reason for the stylesheet re-write: http://stateofthemap.us/saturday.html#schedule/saturday/putting-the-carto-into-openstreetmap-cartography The map tiles will be slightly slower at medium-high zooms while the server builds up its cache. The style is designed to look the same as the current XML stylesheet. *_exit_only and role : *_entry_only are not really useful as first and last stop markers and for intermediate stops they are not needed as time table routing doesn't use them.

Besser so?
