Re: Re[2]: Multiple users, but one POP3 server

2002-11-01 Thread Nigel S Smith

Shaun,
Thanks for this bit of lateral thinking - I hadn't realised that you could
sort mail in this way at the server - it does make sense for it to be done
at the Demon end.
For info, your guess at the way to do it is nearly right., just the other
way round - so the username would be "nigel+webbit", etc.

The only fly in the ointment with this method is that mail being sent to an
unkonwn user e.g. [EMAIL PROTECTED], would never be collected,
whereas, at the moment unrecognised user names are sent to my account by
default (I'm currently using Turnpike which handles this). Do you know of
an option for picking up mail for everyone except the specified users?
(might be something like "-nigel-gillian-lynsey-simon+webbit", so mail for
all other users is picked up).

I know it's not a big deal so won't stop me using this method - it's just a
thought.

Thanks Nigel.

Demon will let you specify a user name in the pop3 authentication so
that it will only download that user's email. I can't remember the
exact syntax, but I think you specify something like "webbit+nigel" as
the user name in the pop3 authentication (see Demon's web site for
exact details).

In TB, you would then create 4 separate accounts and have each setup
with their specific pop3 details ("webbit+gillian", "webbit+lynsey",
etc).

Essentially this moves the sorting to Demon's end and each user only
has to download mail specifically for them.

If you want to continue with TB doing the sorting, you need to go to
the Accounts->Sorting office/Filters options and add a new incoming
mail filter for each of the other three users (set filter string
to the user name and a location of "Recipient") and get it to move the
email to the Inbox of the relevant user (click the button next to the
"Move message to folder" box).

erm... nothing to do with QT's, but more to do with macros. Just
remove the %QUOTES= bit!

M> the template:

M> %QUOTES="%SETPATTREGEXP=""Name:\s+(\S+).*""%REGEXPBLINDMATCH=""%TEXT""Dear

You just need to do this in the reply template:

%SETPATTREGEXP="Name:\s+(\S+).*"%-
%REGEXPBLINDMATCH="%TEXT"Dear %SUBPATT="1",

M> I don't understand how %QINCLUDE works yet. The help file seems
M> sketchy on that, it just drops hints.

It's very simple. Create a new QT. Call it "GetName". Put the above
macro snippet in it. Now, in your reply template, just put this:

%QINCLUDE="GetName"

That's it. That way, if you needed to repeat the extracted name
anywhere further down in the reply, you simply repeat the QINCLUDE
command.

It's not about how fast you are but when you try double clicking the MT.
As soon as the last message has scrolled out to the left, you have to
wait until the first message touches the left border again.

In other words, it's not just a one time problem, it occurs every time
the MT has cycled through all messages.

Hi Deborah,
I hate to tell you this, but this is normal behaviour. You have to fill
in the "variables" before the "calculation" can be made.
In other words, you have to tell which person it is being send to before
TB! knows which template (account/folder/addressbook) to use.

You'll have to, as the 'alternate', indicated by the pipe symbol, is a
regular expression specific one.
BTW: the shorter form of above if [a-z] ;-)))

> Or enable regexp and check for .* in the subject. (I guess that
> this will also catch multiple space as a non-empty subject.)

.* will catch even . It stand for 'every character, except new
line' with a qunatification of 'zero or more times'.

So to catch a string containing at least one character (philosohically
question: beside in terms of programming, is an empty string really a
string? :-) ) the correct regular expression is

.+

every character, one or more times :-) Of course this includes a subject
containing only one or more spaces and nothing else.

So to trigger only on a string containg at least one none-space
characters you can use

[^ ]+

means: a character of class ([]) "not space" (^ ) one or more times.
Or in extendes regular expressions (PCRE) as the one The Bat! makes use
of:

\S+

means: one or 'non-whitespace character'. 'whitespaces' are space, tab,
"carriage return" and "new line".

Message field displays as little squares when FWd is opened

2002-11-01 Thread Mary Bull
Hello tbudl listers,

My sister sent me a FWD re a genealogy file. Since I thought it was an
attachment, I enabled Rich Text/html in the viewer. Opened the message
and it came up as a page full of little squares.

I decided to reply to her and ask her to re-send, so I could re-open
it in much-maligned OE. In Reply (Edit Message) all the squares became
a genealogy communique as a normal text e-mail, and I read how a
newly-found umpteenth cousin thought she had tied a triple
great-grandmother into our line.

Question: Is this normal tbudl behavior?

I received two separate Forwarded messages that operated the same way
this morning from my sister.

(It's really great that they will open in Reply. Now I can start
keeping the genealogy files in TB.) But does anyone know why I get
boxes in the originally opened message?

Thanks to all of you, my favorite solvers of mysteries, in advance,

Yes, I understand that. The point is that, when I double-click on the
name in the AB, the template works in its entirety - including the
%ACCOUNT bit. However when I use Ctrl-N or the toolbar button to start

I may have mis-understood your idea, but if I get all remaining mail, and
have filters to sort it, I might as well just get everyone's in the first

Or have I missed something?

I don't know Turnpike, but it appears to break threads. It also
appears to top-post. So I'm not inclined to try.

Now, if you would consider using TB, you can create a Selective
Download filter that would "ignore" any mail with this address as

Rich text and HTML are two different things. Anyway, over here I get
squares only if my computer does not have the fonts associated with
the character codes. This in turn has to do with the character coding
chosen.

As a matter of fact, I have so far only seen this in Word documents,
not in emails.

This is weird. Because TB uses the same character code for replies
that was assigned to the original message.

I don't think that can be done easily. Best way is to configure TB to
download your mail without deleting it from the server. And to
afterwards (once a day/once week, depending on your flow) to download
with Eudora and delete it. That way you've got to complete sets of
mail. (Or let TB delete the mail after one week and don't let Eudora
delete it.)

Turnpike, I'm not sure what 'Top-post' means. If you're refering to the

doing this from work, where we have to use Lotus Notes (yuk, yuk, yuk).

What is a selective download filter - that sounds like what I've been

I'm not sure you can do it the way I'm thinking about, but if you use
the Account-Dispatch mail on server for each person you get mail for,
if there is anything left it would be those messages NOT to a person you
specified, right? So you take those and filter them for @domain ( no

OK, I'll explain. When you look at the messages on this list, you will
see that people usually quote the paragraph they are replying to, and
post their comment right below it. As I am doing here. It makes the
post easier to read.

What you do, is to quote the entire message and just write your

You will need TB to understand this:

Got it. It wasn't a Word document, because TB would only show it as an
attachment. It was a HTML document, and font that was coded as "to be
used" into it, wasn't on your computer. That's why you couldn't see it
properly.

>>> I decided to reply to her and ask her to re-send, so I could re-open

That is because TB creates mails only in plain text, not in HTML. that
means the reply instruction you gave, opened the editor, which in turn
uses the font that you have set for it. Therefore, you can now read
it.

So you can read the incoming mail: I would disable the RTF viewer, and
would view the mail in plain text.

Yes, but that's in an account template, not a personal template as I'm
using. If this template is to be of any use, it needs to operate
regardless of which of my (40ish) accounts I'm in at the time. The
mystery is why it works when I select the name from the AB & not when

Filter Setting Overridden By Account Properties

2002-11-01 Thread Joseph N.
I have all messages to one POP3 account held on the server for two
days or until the message is trashed locally. I also have a filter
which processes all mail going to that account which is not addressed
specifically to my prefix and domain name. That filter is set to move
the incoming messages to a particular folder for review, to mark them
read, and to remove them from the server.

The filtered messages do not get removed from the server until they
are trashed locally. It seems that the specific filter action of
deleting from the server is overridden by the account properties
setting of leaving on the server for two days or until trashed.

Is there another explanation?

I thought so at first, but Thomas Fernandez has analyzed it a bit

I think what is going on is solved. Did you see Thomas Fernandez's

Deborah,
Sorry for being a so slow today, last day of the week :-)
I have a AB personal template with the %account macro and it work when I
use Ctrl-N, the toolbar button, or directly for the AB.

The only suggestion I have is that the template you think is being
activated is not activated. Can you check this by adding some plain text
to the template like "Personal template" and see if it really is the
template you think it is.

If you are using QT's either copy them in the template directly or add
text to the QT templates so you can see they were activated.

Delete & filter bug?

2002-11-01 Thread Nick Danger
Can't believe I hadn't noticed this before but this seems wrong to me:

I have a folder set up with a read filter to transfer a message
to another folder when read.

If there's a single message in there and I delete it, it's gone and
doesn't get moved.

If there's multiple messages, then even though you delete a message it
still ends up in the filter to folder. If there's three messages (as
an example) and as I read them I delete them, the first two still end
up in the filtered to folder, the last message will actually be
deleted.

Does that seem like a "normal" way it should work to anyone?

I used to use automatic read filters right from my inbox. Probably 75%
of the ones I'd read, I'd want to delete rather than filter to the
folder. Problem was, even though I was hitting the delete in the
message, it was still getting forwarded to the folder, which wasn't what
I wanted.

Therefore, I've totally re-worked my filters and they are all manual and
working as hot-keys using PowerPro.

ND> Does that seem like a "normal" way it should work to anyone?

I don't believe that it should still filter a deleted message. Maybe
it's just the order the system runs it in, but I would prefer it to only
filter the massages that haven't been read and then deleted.

This is just what happened in my situation and to be honest, I actually
prefer the way I have it set-up now.

Cheers,

Chris.

L> If, in your filter, on the advaced tab you enable "message is not

But isn't that a work around?

I don't know if I want to keep or delete the message until I've read it.

If you flag the message it's not filtered correct? You then read the
message and you want to keep it and therefore filter it, what happens?

It's not filtered.

Would you then have to manually remove the flag and manually re-filter
the folder?

I believe the correct way for this to work is for the read filter to
check if you've deleted the message in some way, rather than just
filtering it because you've read it. Maybe the filter kicks in as soon
as you open the message, rather than when you close it?

Overall, I'm not sure if there is a way to do what's required. I've
worked a way which includes flagging, parking and running manual
filters, but this is made quicker and easier using PowerPro.

Unless anyone knows a better way, I'm happy with this.

It was foretold that on 1-11-2002 @ 14:57:33 GMT-0800 (which was

Here's how i do it:
i first flag the message. Then i read it and if i want to keep it, i
unflag it and move to the next message. The unflagged message gets
automatically filtered to the specified folder. And so on.
If the message (or the subject) is not of interest to me, i don't
unflag it but delete it.

I am not sure why you even need to have filters. I have the same setup. I have
my domain and have setup multiple email id's for family members. Each email is
downloaded in their respective accounts. In my case each email id has their own
passwords. In all accounts the pop3 & smtp are same. What differs is the user &
password.

Within each account members create their own filters as per their needs.

This sounds familiar. No, I haven't experienced this, but it was
mentioned on one of the TB lists recently.

ND>> Does that seem like a "normal" way it should work to anyone?

No, I would call it an oversight ("bug"?) in the order in which the
commands (delete and move) are executed. That everything works fine if
you flag the message first, is another indicator that the order is
hardcoded into the module.

He doesn't have different email boxes. He has ony one POP3 mailbox wih
different aliases for the different family members. That's the
difference between your setup and his, and that's why he needs filters
in any case.

Spellchecking and XP conversion

2002-11-01 Thread mm Meister
Hi Bats,

I'm having a bit of a problem getting this to the list - why, only
the deities know - so if it shows up twice, please accept apologies.

Here's the problem. My partner's changed machines to an XP machine.
The Bat! somehow didn't bring over the dictionary, so at Allie's
suggestion, we downloaded the dictionaries. Here's the relevant
  email today:

Looks like the *speel* checker isn't working for sure!

Any thoughts I can pass on?

None of the languages shown are greyed out over here. In fact, both
American and British English appear twice in that drop-down menu: once
in the upper part where all the other languages are, and then once
again in a lower part, which shows only these two languages with the
addage (CSAPI). Does that give you a hint?

Language Switcher

2002-11-01 Thread Thomas Fernandez
Hello TBUDL,

while I use Chinese Windows, most of my communication is in either
English or German. Therefore, my standard character set is ISO-9958-1
(I tweaked a bit in the registry for that). So please don't get
confused, the below has nothing to do with DBCS and should be valid
under English Windows as well.

Yesterday I received a message in Thai. The subject line showed up
quite perfectly, but the body of the message consisted of all kinds of
weird characters. I checked, but the character set in that message was
correctly set to Thai.

I had to go to Options / Editor Prefs / Display / Font: change, and
change the font manually to a Thai font in order to be able to read
the message. Of course, after reading it, I had to switch the font
back to Courier New.

Is there a way to tell TB which font should be associated with a
character set, so that an automatic switching takes place? Why is the
character set switched correctly in the subject line but not in the
body?

How do other people on this list who read/write in English *and* a
local language with non-Latin characters (like cyrillic or Greek)
handle this? Do you use just one font, one that has both Latin and
local characters, or is there an easy way to switch?

(I don't like the looks of the English letters in the Thai font I use,
so I don't want to use that font as standard for all mails.)

Have you tried doing a TB! reinstall? Attempt a reinstall over the
current. See if this helps.

How was the migration carried out in the first place?
