Hello Newsacct,

On Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at 08:30 GMT -0500, Newsacct [N] pressed
random keys until the following was produced:

N> Well, does the %text remove the >s from the message? I mean, if they
N> are already in the original text? I didn't think it did that. I
N> thought that was good for replying without using the >s but I need to

Strangely enough, looking through my quick templates, it appears I
have a recursive template that can be easily adapted to do the job. I
won't bore the rest of this list with the details, but if there is
interest expressed on TBTECH, I can post it there.

Changing name of sender

2003-03-05 Thread Jeanny House
Apologies if this has been asked and answered before.

My mom doesn't use her name when she emails, just her email address.
However, I'd like to have her name show up in the "From" instead of
her email address. Is there any way to do a filter that would make
that happen and then still sort it into the "Mom" file?

PC-Cillin is not very good. Independent testing done by virus

Because we get a 30-day trial period.

I am using PC-Cillin, and while I am quite happy with it, it does not
reliably catch viruses that are in attached files when downloading
mails. So, I manually save every attachment that might contain a virus
(including, for example, .doc and .xls files from friends), and that
action would trigger the realtime scan. But then, I am using PCC6
(1999) and the latest version is PCC2003, so this problem might have
been addressed on any one of the pay-for updates in the past 4 years.

If NOD32 (which gets the most praise on this list) offers a trial
period, I am willing to look into it. Does it?

One question to those people who said ion an earlier thread they don't

a .doc file has a macro virus if you don't use a virus scanner? Do you

Ok. It could be related to the choice of viewers. I've been using
the rich text viewer for a while and haven't noted the problem.

I must also admit that this may be an incorrect association. I
browse most of my mail using the ticker virtual folder or view
folder windows. These may have a lot to do with why I'm not noting
the problem.

Anyway, this is a know problem that I'm pretty sure has been
reported to Ritlabs on more than one occasion.

Norton or AVG. Personally, I prefer Norton as I find it's more
thorough. But this is personal experience (though I have been part of

 - we came up with Norton and Sophos). In the end though, it's

It makes a huge difference if you're going to start using special
characters. The pipe (|) "OR" expression means the same in Regex
*but* works differently. The single quotes suddenly become literal
because you've turned on Regex. That's the entire reason your
filters don't work.

The FAQ lists some uses of SmartBat and in the latest betas it now

Not AFAIK. Can you try parking the message in the filter that
creates the copy then unparking it in the delete filter? Will that
work? Probably not. I think that "parked" is an "index" attribute
rather than a "message" attribute.

As far as the addresses are concerned, this free tool, "Dawn" should do.

Export to LDIF, rather than to The Bat directly. Then import from LDif.

It's a little text editor to take notes and such. Can open several
text files simultaneously.
I heard of people who were using it as default editor for their
cookies file for example. You set it up once to also open your cookies
file and it'll do so every time. Easy way to add cookies from within
TB.

And more things like that.

It doesn't store events. It only adds time and date when you open it.
Could come in handy for a close by notebook.

I have (heh) NAV... but it is not interfaced with TB.

Virii seem to be less of a threat with TB. I have my client set for
text mail default, and TB came with a default setting that didn't
allow much of anything to run, and I don't click on anything
anyway.

Then, I set-up POPFile as a proxy client, to sort out spam... and I
made a 'malware' bucket, too. POPFile has been scoring 100% on malware
filtering since it registered its first bug... I think that malware
are a lot easier for a Bayesian filter to recognise, than spam.

...might put NAV out of business, if enough people find out about
it.

QUOTE from TheBat!'s help:

The Bat! address book can import raw address information from any
client that can export the information to:

- LDIF File
- Vcard
- Comma Separated File
- Tab Separated File
- ".INI" file format

ENDQUOTE

If Netscape 7 can export to one of those formats, from TheBat!'s
address book menu, select the "File | Import from" option and choose
the import method you want to use.

It's ugly, but a simple, crude, brute force if all else fails way to
add the e-mail addresses, possibly the display names, but no other
data to your TheBat! address book is:

1. Use Netscape 7 to send a single, "Test Do Not Read" message
To: .
Do not download any messages, CLOSE NETSCAPE IMMEDIATELY.

2. Start TheBat! and download your e-mail. One of the messages will be
   the test message To: .

3. Highlight the message and then
TheBat! | Specials | Add recipient to Address Book

I've been using GnuPG and GPGShell with no problems whatsoever. I'm also

have had no problems with this program either. But it is not recommended if

For what its worth.

Kaspersky works very well. It does require the "Pro" version for
 it to function within TheBat!

I think kaspersky is the best antivirus in the world (it is a personal

The error is knows when plugin says: "the AV can't scan the message"

Yeah, I know that I can tell it to update whenever I want... I was just
concerned about how often they release updates. Panda releases an
update every day, even if there is only 1 new virus. Normal update has
usually had about 6 in it. So at that rate, Panda will catch 48 virii
that AVG doesn't (as of today), all else being equal.

I don't use the internal version more than once a year. I don't
remember last time I had to use the ckt version since getting

BTW - it is better not to publish your key in a posting to all in

 Good evening list,

I finally have a copy of TB! at work also. Joy oh joy :-) So, eagerly
i configured it, maid my filters and they do not work. I've made
dozens at home but the ones at my office, refuse to work. Strange
thing is that they are plain simple filters: e-mail address as sender,
move it to a folder for that sender. So, nothing fancy i guess :-).

I've gone over them several times but can't figure it out. Now, i
could provide those who are willing to overlook them with a txt file,
but i'm not sure if it's appropriate in the list. But of course,
 of-list would be no problem.

Stefan has already looked into this, as TB *does* have a timeout
setting. It is not clear why it doesn't work in circumstances that I,
too, experience. "Connecting to server" sometimes doesn't timeout,
nobody knows why.

This won't work, because the YES filter has already moved the message.
If a filter moves a message, no following filter can touch it.

I believe Marck's solution is right on target, though.

Feature Request - Launch into Notepad

2003-03-05 Thread Spyder
I HATE HATE HATE HTML emails... but it appears that most newer users don't know
any better and send emails in them. I love the way that The Bat makes them
seperate files/attachments so that I do not have to endure the HTML hoopla.
When I get the attachment, I would like to view it as source code and not the
HTML.

Can we add a right click option for the attachments to "Open in Notepad" or

Yes.

YES and NO filters should appear first. Both should "continue
processing". Both should move messages to "Inbox". Both should
"Create a copy" of the message in the required folder. Add a new
YESNO filter after these two that deletes the original message now
that processing is complete.

How to get two Sorting Office Filters to act on the same incomingmessage

2003-03-05 Thread Daniel Grunberg
For the sake of this discussion, I am looking for incoming e-mails
with "YES" or "NO" in their subjects. Both of the filters work, but
they act as EXCLUSIVE-ORs. I'd like them to act as INCLUSIVE-ORs.

My YES filter moves all YES e-mails to a TheBat! YES folder, and
exports their messages (per a YES export template), adding them to a
file called c:\YES.

My NO filter moves all NO e-mails to a TheBat! NO folder, and exports
their messages (per a NO export template), adding them to a file
called c:\NO.

Occasionally, an e-mail arrives that has both YES and NO in its
subject. (This is not an error, but it does not happen often.) I'd
like such an e-mail to to be moved to both the TheBat! YES folder and
the TheBat! NO folder, and to have its message exported their messages
(per the appropriate export templates), adding them to both file
c:\YES and file c:\NO. In other words I'd like both the YES filter and
the NO filter to act on such a message.

Since the order of my filters is first YES then NO, I tried checking
the Continue Processing with Other Filters option of the YES filter.
That didn't work. Is there something I must do in addition to checking
the option?

Next I tried putting a new YES and NO filter ahead of the YES filter.
This met with partial success. I was able to Move the Message to the
YES folder and Create a (un-parked) copy of the Message in the NO
folder. I was able to export the message into c:\YES, but I could not
export the message into c:\NO.

What should I do?

This programme never ceases to amaze with its versatility. I wish I

Hmmm, this is pretty much what I'd done. I guess that my problem is
elsewhere.

The symptoms are that all To, CC, BCC fields are blank on the printout.

I've tried deleting a recreating all three QTs as well as marking start/end
for each QT with a text string. I'm seeing what I'd expect for print and
print_recipient, but nothing for print_recipient2.

It appears to my untrained eye that print_recipient is failing to call

Any ideas? Should we take this discussion elsewhere?

Eevn if the client would include BCC-header the server is _forced_ to

This might be an option for you, you could use your on mail dispatcher (

Stuart and his long signatures

2003-03-05 Thread Allie Martin
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi all,

This is really intended for all those who may have decided to create
a filter for Stuart Hemming's messages to the list.

As you know, his signatures have often been much longer than his
messages because his company mailserver insists, without compromise,
to add the disclaimer material to the end of all his messages.

I decided to assist by cleaning his messages for him, all using TB!
(cahoots to TB! for allowing me to be able to do this). It was a
learning experience doing it while trying to maintain some of his
original message headers, especially the reference headers to make
   his messages continue to thread.

For those interested, with Stuart's consent, I created a filter that
will catch the messages he sends to me intended for the list. He
includes a comment header that not only indicates this to me, but it
   includes the intended list address.

The filter first exports the message and using regex, I constructed
the headers so that it would contain all needed information from his
message and also included the initial line to make it like a UNIX
   format export.

The filter then imports the message to the Outbox for sending.

His messages are now quite devoid of the long signature, so you can
now fully welcome his messages to the list.

I actually used POPFile to do language recognition and it was quite good
at it. I've never come around to hone my templates accordingly, it was
just an experiment. Most of my communication is in English so I have the
Bat set to spell check in that language. If I need to switch languages
during editing I simply use "Alt-H L" and pick the language I am writing
in.

Hello Nick,

Not stupid. It is a complex set of templates. Fortunately, I've done
the work so you can just use them, but don't feel bad if you don't
understand them yet.

1. You need to make 3 quick templates, named:
   a) print_recipient
   b) print_recipient2
   c) print

2. Copy (CTRL-C) each template. In other words, copy between the:
   =[Begin ]=
   =[ End ]=

3. Go into the quick template with the same name, and use CTRL-V to
paste. So you will have repeated steps 2 & 3 a total of 3 times.

4. Replace your main print template with one line:
   %QINCLUDE="print"

That's it. That should get you running.

common folder for two users freezes TB for a minute

2003-03-05 Thread Jurgen Haug
Hallo Fledermäuse,

I have set up the Bat for two users on my XP home system, and tried
setting up a common folder for Spam, that is accessible for both
users. When this is set, then when one of the users shuts down the
Bat, it is stuck for like one minute or so before it really shuts
down. Is that the normal way of doing things for The Bat, or do I have
to change some settings? So far, I am not using that common folder
anymore, since the one minute guru is not fun.
