The outbound in my 'sent' mail folder shows the message addressed to me,
which was, of course, my intent. There was no intention of spraying the
list with it. However, somehow it happened. Apologies to the list

TB!/XP Installation Question

2009-11-09 Thread Dave Goodman

I'm either having a senior moment, or am just in over my head. I'm
moving my TB! 3.99 from an antique W2K system to a semi-antique XP
system. On the XP system I want TB! to be available to those with User
privileges. The TB! installation must be done with Administrator
privileges, and once done is invisible to Users, though Options->Network
& Administration->Privileges->Access Rights->User is set.

Ideally, each user should be able to access TB! and be confined to his
own set of mail files. Possible? How? :)

Any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated...

You might be interested Tom in my wife's recent experiences whilst
travelling overseas & in fact even before leaving home.

Wanting to have everything at her fingers tips, I setup Voyager on our
USB key before her departure and visited several Internet cafe shops in
town to give it a trial run. Imagine our surprise when it didn't
work; not because of any failure of the software or USB key, but
because the cafe owners won't let outside executables or programs run
away from the hard disc itself. As he said "How do we know you're not
adding a key logger or worse".
Further discussions revealed that this would be the same attitude at
most other places around the globe. So we gave up on that idea
choosing instead to use webmail as a substitute.

This is not to denigrate Voyager, as I think it's a wonderful idea and
it does work terrifically on the home front and when you are
travelling very locally and likely to use another home computer, but
in Europe & the UK forget it, you will be locked out of the majority
of most internet cafe computers.

I love the idea though and I'm even more angry at the exorbitant fees
some overseas Hotels charge for their internet access.

I blush, and admit I had forgotten about that exchange with Marek on the
same general subject. At that time my history list seemed to be putting
a lot of non-pertinent addresses in the drop-down menu as potential
auto-completion candidates, so I limited auto-completion to addresses in
the default address book.

That set-up worked fine for persons with a single address, but allowed
no access to a single person's multiple addresses except by opening the
address book, finding the person, right clicking, and selecting. Very
cumbersome!

I have reset to "To:" header options to display and auto-complete from
both the history list and from the default address book, and that seems
to be working as expected so far.

But that result would seem to indicate that multiple addresses (beyond
the first entry in the address book) are coming from the history list
rather than from the address book. As a practical matter my problem
seems solved, but I'm still wondering how people are displaying address
book entries (as opposed to history list entries) with the Ctl-+ trick
mentioned earlier.

Anyway, we may now be flogging the proverbial dead horse here. Thanks a
bunch for your help.

I have, for example, people in the address book with multiple

How to auto-complete the address I want for Sam Jones, after I type in

Hello Bradley,

Thanks for the nudge in that direction. I can't believe I didn't think
of pinging the server to be sure it was up, but doing so led me to a
partial explanation of what has been happening.

Turns out to be a little off topic for tbudl, but I found that
manually querying particular ISP DNS servers provided by DHCP results
in one of two server IPs being returned. One of those servers seems to
be permanently down, so when that address is returned I get the no
connection error. If the other is returned, the mail goes out.

I have no idea why a DNS query on 'smtp.comcast.net' (from my location)
returns two different IPs, seemingly at random, one of which is dead.

Thanks a bunch for your thoughts...

Oh, I don't doubt that the log is telling the truth. But _why_ can't
connect? Failure of a connection to a single server would be
understandable, but I connect to three different geographically
dispersed smtp servers, and outbounds to all three fail when I have the
problem.

While TB!'s outbounds are 'hung' I can connect perfectly using other
internet protocols, i.e. http, ftp, etc. I suppose I should install
second email program and see whether it exhibits the same symptoms. I
guess that would tell me whether I have a TB! problem or a system
problem.

This one really has me stumped. Anyway, I appreciate your reply...

Outbound Problem

2007-11-03 Thread Dave Goodman

I've had an intermittent ongoing problem for the past several months.

When sending email it quite properly goes to the outbox and an attempt
is made to connect to the smtp server, but after some time the attempt
aborts with the error message "Could not connect to the server", which
is also shown in the account log. This happens to outbounds on all of my
three different accounts.

I've enabled protocol logging, but since there is no connection and
hence no protocol exchange, the protocol log remains empty. The smtp
settings in TB! seem to be correct, and have not changed in several
years.

The problem is intermittent; sometimes a message will be sent and the
next message, a few seconds later, hangs. Once a message hangs, it hangs
indefinitely. Restarting TB! is no help. And while the TB! outbound is
hanging, other internet connections work normally.

Any thoughts would be appreciated...

Hello Everybody,

As a new chum to version 3.99.24 I have now safely imported all my

One particular folder in Outlook had many file attaches, all of which

My question revolves around the new mail in TB and those file
attaches; Does TB store them in a new directory as a result of the
import process ?In other words, all links to Outlook are gone?

Don't want to delete the mail folders in Outlook until I'm sure.

Sorry, I don't have the answer, but after years of using TB! a few months
ago I also started having delays in sending. In my case, on pressing the
send button the connection centre opens, but no connection is made for
30-60 seconds. Finally a connection is completed, and the message is

I'm always connecting to the same SMTP server, but the delay I mentioned

If you want to retain your HTML receiving/sending settings, you could
always copy & paste the content of his email into a text editor, make
necessary modifications, then copy & paste into an email back to your

It happens here also. We have three accounts; on all three periodic
checking is enabled, check on startup is disabled. Still, TB! checks
mail on all three on perhaps one startup in five.

The commercial version. I ran the free version for just a few days, then

I should have been more careful with the figures I mentioned. They are
accurate, but they do not represent *all* messages received since the
original installation. I ran the plugin for about ten days for a

I just installed the freshly released 3.80.06. In this version I can see
a tiny sliver of the windows for numerical input, too small to see or
change the value therein. That sliver remains the same size no matter
how the folder->properties->general window is resized.

So the issue is still unresolved for those of us using large fonts.

Thank you, Mica, for your thoughts. The upgrade to 3.x along with the
change to drive C: went quite smoothly with respect to the program installation
and the program finding the .TBB files. All is running smoothly, but you
were right... I'm having to do some of the configuration and filter set
up manually.

With regard to the new filtering setup, I see in the help file a
reference to "Advanced filtering conditions". But I do not see them
anywhere in the sorting office.

Also, I make considerable use of regex in filters, but I have not been
able to get them to work in the new filtering setup. In version 1.x
there was a checkbox for regex, but I don't find one in 3.x (unless it
is in the "Advanced filtering conditions" which I can't find.

If anyone would care to contribute a pointer on these to issues it would
be much appreciated.

Upgrade from 1.62

2006-03-05 Thread Dave Goodman

I've been running the now antique v.1.62r and am about to upgrade to the
newest v.3.n. But there is a complication. For various reasons, v.1.62r
is installed on my D: drive, where it lives happily with all it's data.

However, I now want to install the new v.3.n in the more customary
C:\Program Files\xxx. It is essential that the mail databases be
left on the D: drive and be accessible to the new installation on C:.

I've been uncertain whether to just install the newer version to C:,
then tell it where the .TBB files, etc. are, and then perhaps uninstall
the old version. Or vice versa. Or whatever.

Any words of wisdom on the best way to accomplish this in as pain-free a
way as possible would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks...

You did not syncronize the local and server mailbox.

This is basic functionality. I shouldn't have to go out of my way and do
anything special to tell my mail client to update the unread message count.
It should just happen.

DG> 2) Using server-side filtering, TB! still doesn't know I have new

??? If you KNOW, UNDERSTAND, what IMAP is, you should know, that the
mailbox's info should be read to get the correct info. So, setup
automatic checking of mailboxes.

Again, basic functionality. I shouldn't have to tinker around with various
options to make my mail client check for new mail. It should just happen.

DG> I haven't spent any time playing around with IMAP Fine Tune options or
DG> anything else because I shouldn't have to.

Ok. So, you buy a car, and you dont worry about what kind of fuel you
use, what kind of tire pressure you have, etc.

I buy a car. I check the tire pressure and make sure the gas tank is full
(with my mail client I give it IMAP/SMTP server names, usernames,
passwords). I can then start the engine and reasonably expect to drive to
my destination.

If I bought a car and was required to open the hood and modify tubes,
levers, and gadgets in the engine before I could drive the car to my
destination, I would return to the place where I bought the car and tell
them it doesn't work and I want my money back.

I DID download Mulberry and tried. Man, that has a lot of settings
also.

It sure does! However, after I installed Mulberry, I set up my accounts,
and then before I looked at *anything else* in the preferences and options,
I was informed of my unread messages and was able to read the (correct)
messages as I selected them. In fact this has been the case with *every*
IMAP-capable client I've tried, except TB.

My gripe isn't that TB is incapable of providing basic functionality. My
gripe is that it won't provide that functionality until I've fussed around
trying to figure out which magical combination of checkboxes need to be
selected in order to *force* it to provide basic functionality.

I tried to like The Bat!, really

2005-07-27 Thread Dave Gorman
So after months and months of watching TB!'s progress, waiting and hoping
IMAP would become usable enough I could return to TB!, I decided yesterday
that I would give up, unsub from the lists, and just stick to an old copy
of TB! I have lying around for my one POP account (and the only reason I
would need that is because TB! saves attachments to their own folder, a
capability I haven't come across in other MUAs).

But this morning I saw a message from Allie (aka ACM, aka Curtis, etc) on a
non-Bat list recommending that people try out IMAP on the latest release
version of TB! and that it had come a long ways (of course including a YMMV
disclaimer).

So I downloaded 3.51.10, fired it up, added two IMAP accounts, and right
out of the box, 3 showstoppers:

1) On one account, after unsubscribing from the only mailbox that had new
messages, the account's unread message count didn't change (I guess this
isn't quite a showstopper, but it certainly is annoying).

2) Using server-side filtering, TB! still doesn't know I have new messages
in folders until I've selected those folders. (Maybe there is a way around
this, but I shouldn't have to go out of my way to have my mail client check
for new messages...)

3) After deleting a few messages from a folder, selecting any message in
the message list would display the incorrect message. (Again, perhaps there
is a fix for this, but I shouldn't have to trick my mail client into
showing me the currently selected message instead of randomly selecting a
message to show me...)

I haven't spent any time playing around with IMAP Fine Tune options or
anything else because I shouldn't have to. A mail client's default settings
should be sufficient to provide basic functionality. If I have to take
extra time to try to figure out what default settings need to be changed in
order to achieve basic functionality, something is just not right.

I realize that IMAP issues are apparently supposed to be a high priority in
the present beta series. However, I believe it has been two years since
IMAP was initially implemented in TB! and it still doesn't have basic
functionality out of the box!

So, I've waited an extra day in order to give TB! another chance, but I
think it's time now to simply give up on TB! and move on. I would still
consider TB! to be a top notch POP client, but for IMAP needs, almost any
other IMAP-capable MUA could exceed TB's performance.

Before I unsub, I just want to thank the TBUDL & TBBETA communities for all
the help and assistance you have been over the years in answering
questions, overcoming problems, and making my TB experience much better and
more useful than it otherwise would have been.

HTML Templates & backgrounds

Hi there

I would like to have a template using my letterhead with an html

letterhead into the email but how do I save this as a template?

I would also like to use backgrounds like I used in Outlook, can I use
these backgrounds some how?

No need, it appeared that it should have been linked as a "Submit"

Chris Weaven said the following on 01/20/2005 10:52:
If I were to be totally honest here, the only thing I'm really missing
from TB! is templates. Working with Thunderbird and IMAP with server
side filtering for a few months now has made me realise that I'm not as
reliant on TB! as I thought I was.
I'm using TBird's filtering, and while there are things I miss about
TB!'s more advanced filtering, at least TBird's filtering works smoothly
with IMAP, which last I tried TB!, the filtering with IMAP was very
quirky and unreliable.

So I would agree with missing templates, and also add that I very much
miss MicroEd.

Once IMAP works well, then I'm sure TB! will be my client of choice, but
until then, I'm more than happy with Thunderbird. As Allie puts it so
well, 'it works'.
Ditto. Although IMAP will have to work as well or better than TBird in
every respect before I'll go back. If basic IMAP functionality is
inferior, it is not worth paying for even for templates/editor/etc.

Just be thankful you don't use IMAP or you'd be cursing The Bat! as

heads and shoulders above TB!'s 3.0 version. And as it is a young

Complicated Filter?

2004-11-25 Thread Dave Thomas
Hi there

I am sure this is possible but I have given up trying. Our mail
server generates messages that it thinks are Spam and prefixes the
subject with the heading "Probably Spam". In most cases this is not the
case.I would like to extract these from my normal mail and put
them into a "Probably Spam" folder - this much I have obviously easily
achieved. Now comes the difficult part for me, I would like to
copy the message to another folder called "Send Probably Spam" and change the
Subject to "nonspam" and the the recipient to be a a specific email
address on our mail server. Again I have been able to do this if I get the
message put into the Outbox, but I would like to check the message
before sending it hence wanting to put it in a draft folder first.

Your help would be greatly appreciated

I like to put antidotes to emails, is using the "Remind Later" feature the

problems after going from v3 to 2.12

2004-09-02 Thread Dave Mellors
Hi,
Having tried v3 I went back to v2.12 but now seem to have problems with unread counts
on my folders.

I have a virtual folder which shows unread messages in a number of selected folders.
If I read a message in the virtual folder it seems that intermittently the unread
count and possibly the unread mark doesn't get reset on the original email and
original folder.

Is this likely to be a bug with v2.12? Something I have done wrong? Or a result of my
backed out upgrade?

And has it improved with v3?
I've tried at least 3 other IMAP clients which are
supposed to be excellent, but if that's the case, I figure
IMAP has a high vacuum rating ... I would hope TB could do
better :-(
I've decided I'm not even going to spend my money or time to find
out if IMAP is any better on V3. I purchased the V2 upgrade a
year ago for the promised fully-functioning IMAP support.
Initially IMAP was quite unusable and I had to resort to other
clients. Eventually I returned to TB when IMAP became somewhat
usable. However, one year later with version 2.12, IMAP
performance is unsatisfactory.

Several times a day I get a parade of exception errors and have
to kill TB from the task manager. Several times a day TB closes
of it's own accord. When I reopen after either of these events,
there are two copies of every message in every folder. I have to
close and reopen TB to rectify that.

There are numerous other annoyances and performance problems with
IMAP. I had stuck it out thinking that surely the bugs would be
worked out and v2 would prove eventually to be a stable IMAP
client. However it never did. I've paid Ritlabs once for a
functional IMAP client and never received it. I'm not going to
pay again just on the hope that maybe someday it will be a good
IMAP client.

I'll stay subscribed to the lists and will keep watching TB.
Maybe after some time I'll give v3 a try and see if has become an
acceptable IMAP client, but for the time being I'm evaluating
alternatives.

I second the motion, IF one is only using POP3. As an IMAP user,
I'm just too frustrated with all the exception errors,
spontaneous closing, doubling of messages, and flaky
filtering/syncing to be able to recommend TB to any IMAP users.
Of course there are some IMAP users whose experience is not as

I've been through multiple discussions about this on other lists. I
personally think it's actually more efficient to put new stuff at the top,
with context below for those who need and want it.

But when in Rome, it's Fine By Me (:-).

Thanks for your patience with my local-newbie ways.

I bet you're right it's not supported.

It isn't true that .pst files are impenetrable though. A number of programs
import from them, including The Bat if I'm not mistaken, but maybe just
msgs, not calendar items.

Thanks, I'l check it out. Looked nice from a quick look, with the one
exception that I didn't see a way to directly import my existing stuff from
Outlook; maybe as text.

Thanks,

That's why I have "Confirm Immediate Sending" checked in the Account
Properties! I was bitten too many times by the accidental sending bug!

So TB doesn't do that when it detects html in my outgoing msgs... h...
Allie (only, please), would you mind trying that, sending an html email
built that way to me directly? Thanks.

That's what Perry said too. I checked it out a while ago, as a contact mgr
and scheduler for my wife (Eudora user). I should look again, thinking only
about scheduling.

Thanks much,
