generic icon appears in place of The Bat icon in task bar
Hi, I just updated to ver.5.1.1. After updating the The Bat image icon disappeared from the task bar. I thought that by right-clicking on the generic icon and then right-cliicking on "The Bat" appliaction and then on "properties" I could fix the problem by clicking on "change icon" and browse for the .ico file, which was in the root directory for The Bat. However, that merely changed the image that appears in the properties shortcut window tab. I have rebooted several times, but that doesn't help. Gmail and two-step verification and The Bat
Hi I am resending this e-mail because I forgot to add an important point. See, below. Starting, yesterday, Google turned on two-step verification for one of my 16 gmail accounts. Thus, when I attempt to use The Bat to download mail from that gmail account, nothing downloads. The log file shows that an application-specific password is required and directs me to this webpage: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833#zippy=%2Cyou-still-cant-sign-in However, the instructions there direct me to access the "app passwords" feature and generate a password to use with the app. So, I selected "mail"and generated the password. However, where do I enter this information in The Bat so that TB can freely access the gmail account. Any ideas as to what I need to do other than to turn off two-factor identification? I have no difficulty accessing this account with my cell phone. It is important to note that, of course, I already have a regular password for the gmail account, which is entered in the appropriate box in account properties: (Account - properties - transport - receive mail.) Re: [T/N: 7232C0F3]: Upgrading The Bat!
Title: Re: [T/N: 7232C0F3]: Upgrading The Bat! G'day Richard, Apologies for the way this comes through, but while the upgrade has gone through without a hitch as far as my message base and filters are concerned, my message templates have become horribly screwed up, hence the poor format of this message. To give you an idea of what is going on, here is what my reply template ends up being when I somply press the reply button. G'day +ACU-CapitalFirst+AD0AJQ-OFromFName, +ACU-QInclude+AD0AIg-Reply+AF8-Ref+ACI +ACU-NOReadConfirm+ACU-Cursor+ACU-Quotes +ACU-QInclude+AD0AIg-Signature+AF8-TB+ACI +ACU-QInclude+AD0AIg-The+AF8-Bat+AF8-Beta+AF8-Discussion+AF8-Signature+ACI +ACU-QInclude+AD0AIg-TB+AF8-Headers+ACI +ACU-SetEditor+AD0-1 +ACU-QInclude+AD0AIg-Default+AF8-Delay+ACI- Now, those up with everything will know whats going however I have not the foggiest idea as to what the +ACU- and +ACI means and why it is there. You can see what it was supposed to show from my previous message in this thread. Basically I have used separate quick templates that can be used across multiple folders and groups and then they get called up as %QT in a particular group etc. This way, if I need to change something, I only have to do it once and it ends up automatically across all the groups that use it. Anyone have any idea as to why this change has happened? Thanks. I am going to enter a sigdash even though I have no signature as I am mot a big fish eater. Well, you know what I mean :D Hopefully it comes down this time as the other thing is that it lost the from setting and used my default. One other thing is I have lost the message list tabs and am having to ferret around to find out how to get them back. I was trying to get rid of all the unnecessary windows like the quick reply window and the one at the root of an account. Much better to access them from menus and toolbars. That will learn me. Here goes. -- Current version is 9.1.18 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: [T/N: 7232C0F3]: Upgrading The Bat!
Hello Ian, > I need to preserve the existing message database and apart from a > separate copy of the messages and then doing Backup through the Tools > menu, is there any thing I need to do? In addition to the TB internal backup of your message database and settings, I would do a full backup of TB program files and data files. I would then uninstall TB and the message database so you can install 9.3.4 fresh without any possible corruptions that may have happened in between. Once your new 9.3.4 is installed you should be able to use TB's restore to restore your message database, address book and settings. This should avoid any quirky differences that may exist between 4.2 and 9.3.4. The full backup of TB program and dataa files will allow you to return to your pre-9.3.4 state just in case things do not go as smoothly as we both think they should. Is there a way to log the interaction between The Bat! and GnuPG?
Hi Is there a way to log the interaction between The Bat! and GnuPG for debugging purposes? TB! fails to decrypt some of the encrypted messages I receive, giving as it's error message a portion of GnuPG's output (but not the part saying what went wrong). If use GnuPG on the command line and copy in the text from the body of the encrypted message, the message is decrypted without error. -- Best regards MFPA <mailto:2017-r3sgs86x8e-lists-gro...@riseup.net> Did you hear? spontaneous restart of The Bat when executing
The Bat has been acting strangely for the past - approximately - four months. It will, usually, but not always, automatically stop, shut down, and then re-start, if I attempt to copy text into an e-mail. The text could be a URL from a website, or a portion of a Power Point slide. It doesn't matter. Unfortunately, when this happens, none of the open e-mails will re-open. If I have 10 e-mails open, I either have to recall which ones among any one of a dozen e-mail accounts, or forego having them open, again, on my desktop. E-mails that are being edited for sending will be in the outbox. However, open e-mail from the in-box, will be back among the thousands (tens of thousands!!) of e-mails and there is no way to recall all that were open. This constant re-starting of The Bat is annoying. It never did this before. I am using the same laptop that I have always used.No hardware has been added or changed. Why is this happening and what can I do to fix this? This happens about 95% of the time. The few times it doesn't happen are usually right after the application has restarted. -- Avi Avram Sacks, using The Bat! This happens to me too, also in almost all social media. and it is not because I travel, but because I use VPN. After a few mails from GMAIL warning of the changes all is now well. It was definitely "ON" before, but for whatever reason it didn't seem to take, unless the smartphone is automagically changing it when it connects. I only used the gmail website to create the account in the first place and occasionaly for "website login required" errors (see below). You need to look in the settings there and enable POP. In The Bat, just create an account like any other. SMTP = smtp.gmail.com secure to regular (startTLS) port 587 POP = pop.gmail.com secure to dedicated (TLS) port 995 Keep an eye on the account log. If your IP address for the actual Internet connection changes, you get "website login required" errors. That will probably happen the first time. Then just login at www.gmail.com and logout again. You might have to set "allow access for insecure apps" somewhere when actually logged in to gmail in a web browser, but if this happens you should only have to do it once. Download TB! onto thte new machine. 4.) when your installation starts, it will ask you whether you want to restore from a backup. It is that simple indeed. I have done thgat a couple of times. Moving The Bat!
In the next week or so, I will be replacing the computer on which The Bat! is located. I'm a registered user of 6.4.0.2 (32-bit) currently on a Windows 7 machine. I will be moving to another new Windows 7 machine which will support 64-bit (actually, the old computer supports 64-bit--not sure why I'm using the 32-bit). I have a current backup named BatBackup2.tbk which is stored off-site. Since I'm a bit of a dunce at this, can someone let me know where I can find instructions about moving everything to a new machine? I would assume I'd download the latest version of The Bat! -- or can I get the same version--which would be best to do? Can I then simply select Restore from the Tools menu and everything will be back to normal? Or is that making things too simple? Thanks. -- Mike Current version is 7.1 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: The Bat! and Exchange, a workaround
hello, I hesitate to take up space here; no one responded to my first (June 13) request for help perhaps because no one else is running The Bat! with Exchange. But since I did find a work around, I thought I should report it in case it helps someone. If you aren't interested in The Bat! working (or not) with Exchange, or if you cannot abide emails that post on the top of the old one, stop reading here. As I wrote back in June, in order to get The Bat! to work with Exchange I had to run Outlook at the same time: > I have had some issues making TB! play nicely with Exchange, which > is, as I said, used by my place of employment. I have never been > able to use TB without using the Outlook profile. In Properties, > under Transport, I use the "Existing profile" option. In addition, I > have to have Outlook running (minimized on the desktop) for the TB > to find what it needs to connect to the Exchange server. On June 9 this arrangement stopped working. It started working again, with one change, yesterday. The change is that I now need to run two Outlook windows at the same time for The Bat! to work. That is, I open one window, then open another, minimize both, start The Bat! and it works as expected. I can also start The Bat! first, it doesn't seem to matter. I hope this helps anyone else still trying to get The Bat! to work with Exchange. If anyone can figure out _why_ this works, I'd be interested in knowing. I have the same thing happening fairly often, although I'm running a much older version (but also on XP SP3). If I just go away and let it run, it usually does finish eventually but it may take half an hour or more. If I'm impatient, I force it closed -- and so far have not seen any serious permanent damage to my files, although the display layout tends to change if I do this. My best guess, and it IS just a guess, is that TB is doing some cleanup housekeeping, since I do have a number of "cleanup on exit" options checked. It doesn't bother me frequently, since I leave TB running in a virtual machine on a Linux host 24/7 and only close it down to reboot after updates to either the guest (no more after today!) or the host. -- Best regards, Jimmailto:j...@jimkyle.com Using The Bat! v4.2.36.4 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 3 on VirtualBox 4.2.18 under Xubuntu 12.04.3 with AntiSpamSniper Version 3.2.4.5 Current version is 6.1.8 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

However, after poking around the Help directory, I discovered that there is a synchronization tool right there, under "tools" in the toolbar. As a result, it seems that I now have three options for synchronizing the use of TB on two separate computers: Option (1) a. create backup of TB! as it exists on computer #1 b. copy backup file to computer #2 c. use .msi file to instal TB! on computer #2 d. during installation of TB! on computer #2, instead of creating a new account, restore from backup. e. ensure that all mail remains on server for as long as it takes in order to ensure that mail gets separately downloaded to both computers (I keep mail on both gmail and non-gmail servers for 90 days). f.pray that downloads of mail to TB! on computer #1 will not preclude downloading that same mail on to computer #2 With this scenario, it is not clear to me that mail *sent* from one computer will be seen on the other unless one makes sure to always send a copy to one's self with every sent message. Option (2) a. install TB! on computer #2 and follow the directions in the help file for creating a data file on computer #2 to be synchronized. b.generate a synchronization archive on computer #1 c. go to computer #2, choose tools/synchronize and synch with the data file created on computer #1. Option(3) a. install WUALA on both laptops b. create a backup folder of TB! on laptop #1 b. install TB! on the second laptop using the .msi file c. restore from the backup folder on laptop #2 d. use WUALA to keep both laptops in synch. After reading this thread for some time I thought I should jump in with a description of the system we have used for many years: My computer is the administrator for all email accounts including my wife's. I have POP3 set up on my computer for all accounts. My wife has her account set up as POP3 on her computer. Both of us have our accounts set as IMAP on our phones and any sent messages are automatically BCC'd to our accounts to insure that there is a copy of all sent messages available for archiving in the POP3 account on the computers. The phones sync every 10 minutes and the computers download every 10 minutes. This is very easy to manage with minimal effort. No networking is needed. When we travel it is only necessary to take my computer because my wife's messages are also stored on it. If further remote management is needed we do it with TeamViewer. The client used on the phones is My Secure Mail for Android. - -- Paul The Bat! v.4.2.44.2 on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit 6.1.7601 No IMAP No OTFE Current version is 6.1.8 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Since their home page is clear that the program syncs things via The Cloud, it would require all machines involved to connect via the internet, which might (let me emphasize MIGHT) be a security risk. For more than seven years now, I've run my copy of The Bat! in a way that allows me to access it from any workstation on my home-office LAN; that's by running it in a virtual machine using Oracle's VirtualBox virtualization program, and accessing it via the Remote Desktop protocol. Only machines on my local network can access it. This means I have only one copy of TB! and it is running 24/7, checking for new mail every 7 minutes. My solution might not be acceptable in your case, since if one of you were actually using TB! at any given instant, the other would not be able to connect until the first person hung up the RDP connection. (It's possible to configure RDP to allow multiple connections, but would be best to leave it at the default single-connect-only setting because two people trying to type at once would simply create a mess). Several years ago, I used an open-source program similar to PC Anywhere, called UltraVNC, that allowed my customers to connect to my system over the internet, with the connection encrypted with a key known only to me and built into the UltraVNC client I made available to the customers. This gave me full access to their system but under their control. If it's still around, you could use this to allow each laptop to connect to the desktop via UltraVNC, from anywhere at all, but again it would be single-user at a time. Just a couple of thoughts for alternate solutions... -- Best regards, Jim mailto:j...@jimkyle.com Using The Bat! v4.2.36.4 on Windows XP 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 3 on VirtualBox 4.2.18 under Xubuntu 12.04.3 with AntiSpamSniper Version 3.2.4.5 Current version is 6.1.8 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

The Bat! used to have a "server mode" where one machine had TB! acting as an exchange server and the others in the local network were installed as clients. Alas, this was discontinued a few years ago. I would think about pointing the Laptop copies of The Bat! to the account settings and mail folder on the desktop PC rather than each having it own copy. You cloned your installation of The Bat! as it was at the time, so that you had two identical copies of the message base and account settings that were not linked together. Changes would not be carried across to the other copy unless you kept them synchronised, an example of which Jack has already suggested. > Before > setting up The Bat on the second laptop, can > someone explain to me how I can set up The Bat on our > little home network so that any folder or rule > created on one laptop, will be seen on the other > laptop? I present this (possible) "solution" merely as a member of this august group trying to help a fellow member. I have no idea if it would actually work. As an example: I have a password vault program (KeePass) on my desktop and on my wife's laptop. I wanted a way to sync the password database so that any changes/additions/deletions made on one machine would automatically appear on the other machine. I found a FREE program called WUALA (as in voila) found at: http://www.wuala.com/. I have it set to start anytime either machine is re-booted so that it is always running on both machines. So far it has worked beautifully. Any changes made to the password database on either machine appear within a minute on the other machine. I have it set up to sync the entire KeePass folder in PROGRAM FILES (x86) on both machines because it was the easiest thing to do, even though the only file that needed to be synced was the password database file itself. My suggestion then is to download WUALA, install it on both (all) of your computers and do what I did only have it sync the entire TB! folder on both (all) of your machines. Admittedly I have not done this with TB! as my wife and I have separate email accounts so it was never necessary. My only concern is that I have a sneaking suspicion that TB! stores things in locations other than the TheBat folder in PROGRAM FILES (x86). Adding The Bat to a new computer on a home network
Hello Tbudl, I have recently expanded my home network to include three computers. Previously, it had one desktop and one laptop. I have added a new laptop, and now want to use the desktop for no other purpose than as a dedicated "mail server" so that regardless of which laptop is on site, the other laptop will be able to download and see mail. (When offsite, either laptop can use webmail to see the mail.) However, as I explain below, I see some problems. The primary installation of The Bat is on the desktop. In July 2010, when the first laptop was acquired, I asked how to set up The Bat so that both computers could see the same files. It was suggested I create a backup of The Bat on the desktop. Then use the .msi file from the desktop to setup The Bat on the laptop, but then, instead of creating an account, restore, using the backup. I did that. However, I notice that new mail folders and sorting rules subsequently created on the desktop are not seen on the laptop. Why is that? Before setting up The Bat on the second laptop, can someone explain to me how I can set up The Bat on our little home network so that any folder or rule created on one laptop, will be seen on the other laptop? And, I need to use the desktop as the "server", so that when either laptop is offsite, the other laptop will still have access to the mail. This scheme is designed to mimic IMAP without using IMAP. I have tried, unsuccessfully to set up IMAP. Other than this one, annoying glitch, my current scheme seems to work ok. (Well, there is a second glitchin that if any mail is downloaded on one laptop, it will not appear on the second laptop (if the laptop is turned on), until downloaded on the second laptop.
