Allie, in my version of TB!, if the message is being viewed in the
message window, the red arrows give two options: "Delete and move up"
and "Delete and move down." I use these rather frequently in my Inbox,
and for messages in folders for which I have filters, I find the blue

Yes, but it would initially involve making a change to all templates for
each account. I personally use Quick templates for a more central
management of templates. I then call each quick template using the
"%Qinclude=" macro. Changing the quick template will lead to
the change affecting all templates that use the same quick template.

I'm afraid not. TB! moves one down the message list after each delete.

Why do you need TB! to run the script?

You could use the system scheduler to run it at regular intervals. For
manual running, why not create a shortcut for it and then assign the
shortcut a hotkey?

As to letting TB! run the script, the only way I can think of doing that
would be to create a manual filter whose action is to run an external
program. Use the 'do not match message against filter rule option' so
that the filter will be triggered by any message. Assign the filter a
hotkey. Of course, you'd have to copy and paste the filter to each
account for it to work no matter which account you have selected.

Some Newbie Questions...

2003-07-05 Thread choppystride
Hi all,

1) In my haste to start using using TB, I set up a lot (over 2 dozen) of
email accounts and just accepted the default templates (New, Reply,
Forward, etc.) for each account. Now, after about 2 weeks of using
TB, I would like to change them all but it seems that I need to
change them one account at a time. Is there a faster way to do this?
i.e. is there a centralized way to change the default templates so
that the changes will also apply to all existing accounts?

2) I like to view my message list such that the newer ones are at
the top. However, after I've read a message and delete it, TB always
like to automatically highlight the next one below (i.e. an older one
which I've already read and decided to keep). Can I configure TB so
that it can automatically move to the next message above?

3) I had this problem where my ISP only allows 4 simultaneous connection
to the mail server at one time and causes TB to hang when I check my 2
dozen accounts all at once. I wrote a quick and dirty script to
overcome this. Is there a easy way for me to configure TB to call an
external program (i.e. as a menu item, a button, a shortcut, etc.) so
that it can run my script?

As a small point, although it is kind of you to notify the infected person of
the virus, in more recent cases, the sender (From field) is not who they claim
to be. Take Klez for example, it spoofs the from field based on addresses in
the infected users address book, along with things it finds in the internet
history.

No, although there are rumours of it being put into version 2.

2002-07-03 Thread pOoTer

Hi All,
Just joined the list and just started using this awesome mail client after
'sacking' Outlook 2000.
I have two newbie questions if you could oblige me

1. I am using Kaspersky AV v4.0.5 with the Bat! plug-in and have set up a template
to send to people who infect me, trouble is it does not seem to trigger, any
ideas what I am doing wrong please?

The template I am using is the one in 'Options, Virus Protection'

2. Can The Bat! compose HTML emails and if so where is the option because I
can't find it?

Thanks in advance, I did try and find answers on the FAQ but didn't manage
to turn anything useful up.

I've found this feature to be very reliable in that it works all the
time. If it doesn't work for me it's usually because of something I've
done, like inserting an extra space leading to a match failure or
something of the sort.

Newbie Questions - address book

2002-03-12 Thread Carter Thomas

HI!

tbudl:

I have about 180 e-mail addresses. They are all set in one address
book. I have the options/preferences/auto complete box checked and I'm
telling the program to complete the addresses from "history + all
address books".

There are times when I'm typing an address and it doesn't find it. (So
I manually go to the address book and select the address.)

Other times it works as expected, pulling out the correct address as I
type the first few letters.

I haven't really noticed why sometimes it fails to find the address
I'm looking for. (I'm typing the name as it appears in the address
book.)

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Newbie Questions

2002-03-02 Thread Carter Thomas

HI!

tbudl:

Newbie Questions

I have a couple of questions that I haven't been able to figure out.

I've got a message that is stuck in my Outbox. I've tried deleting it, forwarding
it and sending it. It doesn't seem
to want to go away. How can I "clear it out"? (I only have this problem with this
one message. I have others that were modified then sent on to their destination.)

I've looked at the faqs but I haven't been able to figure out how to either point to
or import the dictionary that is
used in Microsoft Office. I saw this mentioned on a Quick Tip.

(I also have the Microsoft Bookshelf 2000 on my hard disk.) I've looked at the
different file types and extensions but none of
those files are large enough to the "real" dictionary. It usually seems like I end up
importing a subset of the dictionary that
includes user added works.

Does any one else have this figured out?

Thanks for your help,

Better yet, change your print template so instead of %Text you should
use %CLIPBOARD

Then you just need to hit ctrl-c before you print.

See the TB FAQ for a better introduction to Templates. The discussion
doesn't focus on print templates specifically, but the structure and
thinking is the same.

That's because TB reports all unread messages as new, no
matter how old they are, while Eudora only reports all
messages retrieved since your last download as new, and
distinguishes them from (old) unread messages. No, you can't
reset that counter. The only thing you can do is mark your
old messages as new, and give them a colour coding (viz.

Mybutton isn't greyed when I try this, but you're correct
that TB will print the whole of it instead of just the
selected part. The solution is to edit the message and cut
away what you don't want to prinh.

Copy the message to the Outbox, open it, cut away what you
don't want to print, save and print. There.

Go to Explorer, --> Tools --> Options, and replace the
.html extentions (.htm, .shtml) with IE instead of Netscape.

Some Newbie Questions

2000-11-24 Thread Bernie Borenstein

I just started using TB! awhile ago and really like it. I had
just got fed up with Eudora problems and bloat. But I have three
questions :

1) I have it set so I minimize TB! to the system tray. I then
hold my cursor over the icon to see if there are any new
messages. If I have no new messages, it tells me there are
190 new messages. I assume this is because I imported my
old mail from eudora. Is there any way to reset this to
0.

2) I know you'll think I'm nuts, but I receive multipage
emails that I want to print a selection from. I highlight
my selection and select print. The selection radio button
is greyed. I'm using Win98 SE and an HPLJ4L printer.
I have looked for options to modify, but have found none.
Can you help me??

3) I've got it to receive HTML mail as an icon by turning
HTML autoview off. But when I click on the icon the
page gets opened in Netscape. My default browser is IE and
I would like it to be IE for any pages I open in TB! How
can I do this??

Thanx for a great product.

I used to experience the same problem, at a time when my folder reply
template was empty. Your folder reply template has to contain the
%QUOTES macro *somewhere*, or the F4 shortcut won't work.

When you say "I'm unable" what exactly does that mean? Are you getting any
error messages? If you use your mouse to highlight the text you wish to

Go to your main window, open the View menu, and check under
Display. Perhaps you inadvertedly entered a keystroke that
made TB display onlu unread messages, or only messages with
attachments...

Newbie Questions

2000-09-24 Thread Clearwater Landscapes

Hi All,

I'm a new user and have been learning LOTS from reading these
archives...thanks for the knowledge! One problem remains...I'm
unable to "Reply quoting selected text," either through the
Specials menu or with F4. Have tried in both accounts, one of
which uses no templates except a simple sig...the answer is
probably easy, but I sure can't find it.

Another problem, on the second day of use, all my messages in all
folders and subfolders disappeared! No options were checked to
remove messages, purge, or compress...fortunately I'm keeping all
on server for two days and am still using Eudora.

The Bat! is a great step up from Eudora if I can solve the above
problems. Thanks from a grateful newbie.

Best Regards, Dan Eskelson

Viewing a message through the preview pane is the same as opening it
up. So when you set the reading delay in the account properties, you
changed the behaviour of both. If you find that you aren't using the
preview pane, you can turn it off (View->Message Auto-view) and set
the reading delay to something shorter.

Hope this helps.

Nope, you can't 'bind' it in this way. This particular
behaviour of the cursor is called 'free caret', as I've
learned here, and I complained about it too, wanting (and
expecting) my cursor to behave just like you dexcribe.
Although I am slowly getting used to this free caret, I'm
not an advocate, and I believe the feature shoould be an
option, not an obligation.

Put it on your wish list for v2.0...

Your other question I'll leave for more accomplished users.

Introduction and (yup!) newbie questions...

2000-09-23 Thread Reed Byers

Greetings!

My name's Reed; I'm a 32-year-old Systems Analyst working for Oregon
State University. A week ago, I began my search for "the perfect
Windows Email client" -- after six years, the chaos and expense of
keeping all my mail in PINE on my ISP's server had finally become too
much for me -- and found my way to "The Bat!"

I've been reading the on-line archives of this mailing list for a
week, and you guys impressed me so much, I dove in and registered it
yesterday. I *LOVE* the advanced features I'm seeing; I have no doubt
that this is the right program for me.

HOWEVER... like every other newbie, I *DO* have some questions.

1) In the editor, is there any way to "bind" my cursor to the text? In
other words, when I get to the end of a line, I REALLY want
"cursor-right" to wrap to the next line. If I wanted to add text off
the edge on the right, I'd use the space bar to get there. Likewise,
moving the cursor up or down to a shorter line should cause it to pop
left to the end of the line, rather than just sitting where no text
is.

2) When I select an unread message (and it shows up in the preview
pane), within a few seconds it gets marked as READ. Now, I don't EVER
want a message marked READ unless I open it, or mark it myself. After
some investigating, I've found the setting under my account's
Properties that says "Time of reading to mark a message as read", and
sure enough, a big enough number here does the trick. But now, it
won't even mark a message READ when I open the message! Do I have to
create a filter to do what I want here?

Thanks in advance!

Again, I consider a "view-source" function a rudimentary feature that
TB is missing. Exporting and viewing externally works, but the
feature really should be built in. I'll get over this too.

Lot's of discussion on this! :-) I understand both sides of this
controversy. I think the best solution is to give users the choice
of retrieving if they choose. Eudora actually does this. It has
an option of using Microsoft's viewer. That does introduce huge
security problems, but the option is there. For now, I can easily
open the html attachment in my browser. No big deal.

Yes, we all know about choice. The problem, however, is that for you to
get the choice, the two or more choices have to be made available and
therefore implemented. If the developers chose to implement one way
because they lack the resources to implement both or have simply made a
development path decision, then I'm glad they have chosen the secure

I'm not really against the monolithic approach as you defined. It's
fine with me should RIT decide to incorporate a html/richtext editor
in TB, though I have very little use of it. Given the long list of
improvement expected for v2 and the extremely limited resources,
however, I sincerely think it's not wise for RIT to do so.

This is a very valid point. Netscape Mail and OE will fetch images via
links in HTML messages via their browser partners rendering engines.
Eudora, AFAIK, uses the rendering engine of IE (correct me if I'm wrong
here). The problem with using IE as a rendering engine is that the user
needs to have IE installed.

The users accustomed to a monolithic approach may frown at this point
though it's a very good one. By monolithic, I mean that the application,
an e-mail client in this instance, is self contained and able to do most
if not all things e-mail related. This is in contrast to the modular
approach where specialised independent apps are used in conjunction with
the e-mail client to produce a similar effect, though usually a more
robust and user definable one.

I don't see any developer philosophy that "email shouldn't be able to
do html." TheBat! renders html just fine. What it doesn't do is
perform gets for embedded links within the html. For that reason I use
TheBat! as my only email client.

Raging tide? I've missed that. Those who are really concerned about
security and privacy issues have turned to TheBat! for a level of
protection from insidious email content. If you want/need this
exposure, Microsoft and its Outlook family will be more than happy to
help satisfy you. Outlook and other fully capable html-renderers will
be happy to execute embedded code, honor Web bugs, and other wonderful
concepts introduced by the leader in security-blind products.

Plus, if you filter mail from mailing lists into different folders,
you may set via folder properties that unread messages in such
folders are not shown in the ticker.

I don't see anyone standing in the way of any tide. :-) As far as
html mail is concerned, there are three different issues.

First is about viewing html mail, which TB has implemented. So this
should be no issue.

Oh, you may think TB hasn't "fully" implemented html mail viewing,
judging by the fact that many graphics in html mail are not
displayed. It's a matter of security and privacy concerns (have you
read news reports about how spammer could use linked graphics to
trace your online activities?). It's a developer's choice, and a
fine choice it is, IMHO! (Graphics embedded in the mail are
displayed just fine, as you should have known.)

You may argue that TB should give users a choice to take the chance
and go fetch linked graphics anyway. The counter arguments would be
equally strong, however, if not stronger. For starters, enabling
that choice could be a support nightmare for RIT, which has very
limited human resources. Judging from the number of brave souls who
continue to use Outlook despite all those security concerns, the
potential of such nightmare is indeed very high. Second, as others
have pointed out, launching your favorite browser to view the
message is just one click away.

HTML is an ever-evolving thing. Given the myriad of standards and
proprietary-yet-popular extensions out there with which even
dedicated (and much larger) browser developers (Opera software and
such) have problems keeping up, TB's html viewing implementation has
to stop somewhere. For me (and many Bat users, I believe), TB's
current implementation is good enough.

Lastly, there is the issue of html mail editing/sending. Should TB
try to be a html editor? I don't think so. Again, this is a matter
of resource management. It's no small feat trying to incorporate a
html editor. Given the fact that there are many such programs out
there, I see no reason for RIT trying to be another also-run. With
the newest MAPI support in beta, you can easily send html mail from
your browser or MAPI-enabled editor, and that should be enough.

B> 1) Is there no NewMail indicator? I see the animated icon and the

The ticker, when in use, has the option "Age limits". This allows you
to configure it to only show *new* unread mesages.

IMHO the other answers you have received are spot-on and I won't
bother restating them. The only thing I will do is endorse the comment
that TB does not use browser "GET" technology to retrieve non-included
graphics because it is not right that it should. TB is an off-line
reader. "GET" is an on-line function. QED. Any "get with the trend"
type statement ridiculing the way TB does this are misleading and
inaccurate. The *majority* of TB users would be unhappy if this
methodology were to change for reasons of security, bandwidth and call
costs when retrieving extra images.

It is very easy to simply double-click the icon for the HTML to launch
the system default browser for full HTML view - even easier than
Thomas indicates ... there is no need to change any settings.

Personally, I delete HTML attachments and keep the plain text.

You are certainly on the right track here. Once you marry Address Book
templates with Quick Templates and the %QINCLUDE macro you suddenly
enter a whole new realm of flexibility.

Hello Bill,

where I live) witnesses say BillG typed:

> 1) Is there no NewMail indicator? I see the animated icon and the

Nope. The closest you can get is to mark "old" unread messages with
a different colour group, using the flag or park options. Then mark
your old unread messages as read. There are many disadvantages to
this strategies, but its the closest you can get right now.

> 2) Why can't I rearrange the order of my folders? They appear in the

Hold down the ALT key while dragging with the mouse. To make a
folder a child folder of another folder, use ALT-CTRL and drag.

> 3) I can't find a "view source" function.

I think you have to export the message and view it using your
 favourite text editor.

> 4) the built-in html viewer doesn't seem to work very well?

TB renders HTML properly, it just will not go onto the net to search
for graphics, etc. If the pictures are sent along with the message,
then TB will display them correctly. There are several reasons, one
 of them being:
Some spammers will send an HTML message with a reference to a small
graphic with a unique name. When their server registers a hit on
that file, they know that your address is active.

I usually leave the HTML auto-view turned off. When I get a message
where I want to see the formatted version, I just double click on the
attachment icon to view it in my default browser.

I wouldn't want RIT to spend any time working on the HTML rendering
engine. However, I wonder how much work it is to make use of the IE
engine? I know several programs that do this to incorporate browser
 capabilities.

> 5) Is the toolbar configurable? I can't see how to do it.

Not yet. It is supposedly going to be in Version 2. But don't hold
your breath waiting for *everything* that is rumoured to be in the
 works for V2.

OK, The Bat! assumes that any unread mail is "new". Therefore,
"unread" and "new" messages are treated the same way. However, if you
have found how to indicate by sound when a new mail has arrived, you
can also create a filter catching all incoming messages and run an
external program (Account/Sorting Office/Incoming Mail/New). As
"filering string" in "rule" you choose a catch-all, for example "@"
present in 'kludges' (TB's word for 'headers'). Then under the Action
tab, you click on "Run external program" and have your coffee machine
make a double espresso. ;-)

Email: headers + body = raw message. HTML: some picture thing.

However, if you tick Options/External Image Viewer, any HTML
attachment will open in you favourite browser in which you can view
the source.

The viewer works perfectly, only in TB. If the images are sent with
the message, they will be shown. However, often enough they are not,
and the email client is required to conntact to the internet and "get"
these images. NS, Eudora and OE do that, and we dont' like it: it's a
security problem. We don't want TB to do this.

B> 5) Is the toolbar configurable? I can't see how to do it.

AFAIK I think it's not configurable. But we do have a wish list. ;-)

Newbie questions

2000-09-09 Thread BillG

I'm an unregistered user of ver 1.45. I have been reasonable impressed with
TheBat!, but there are a few things that are REALLY bothering me. If I
can get these problems worked, I REALLY want to buy this program.
Maybe someone can tell me how to fix them:

1) Is there no NewMail indicator? I see the animated icon and the
Ticker - but they are triggered by Unread mail, not NEW mail. If I
already have some unread messages (I always have some!), then I will
not have any indication that a new message was just downloaded (other
than a sound, if that is enabled and I happen to be in the room).

2) Why can't I rearrange the order of my folders? They appear in the
order that they were created, and I can't fugure out how to
re-order them.

3) I can't find a "view source" function. I see that I can view the
RFC-822 headers - that is good. But I'd like to be able to view the
entire raw data of any message. Is that possible? Every other mail
reader that I've used has that ability.

4) the built-in html viewer doesn't seem to work very well?
I get weather reports and comics and such from infobeat.com.
They come in HTML form. TheBat can't seem to render the files.
Why? Netscape mail, Eudora, OE, all render those messages just fine.

5) Is the toolbar configurable? I can't see how to do it.

That's it. I really DO like this tool. I LOVE the strong filtering
(it is at least as good as the Eudora filtering). The whole template
thing is VERY cool. Eudora can't even spell "template". :)

I'm guessing that I have not been using TheBat long enough - that some
of you experts can answer these questions. The lack of a NewMail
indicator, and the HTML viewer problem might be show-stoppers (if I
can't figure out what I'm doing wrong).

Please help this newbie. :)

Bill

The documentation has been quite outdated for some time, and I guess
the most likely time we'll see a new documentation is when v2 is
released. Contrary to what some people suggested when v1.45 was
released recently, no new documentation or help file was included in

They are not "folders". If you look more closely, they aren't named
"Inbox" and "Outbox", but rather "Incoming Mail" and "Outgoing
Mail". And it's one of the most powerful feature of TB.

Unlike most, if not all, of the other mail clients, TB allows you to
have different filters for incoming mail, outgoing mail, read mail,
and replied mail, plus a kill filter (called "selective download" in
the newest version). And the sorting office is where you manage all
the filters for an account. Filters organized under the "Read
messages" tree, e.g., won't be applied to, say, outgoing messages.

The most confusing category for some people is the "Replied
Messages". Filters in this category are applied to messages to which
you reply, not the reply messages (to be sent by you) themselves.
For those, you have to use "Outgoing Mail" filters.

Newbie questions continued

2000-07-24 Thread Arnie

Hello TBUDL,

Sorry about some of these questions, but the online help is scant
(to say the least) regarding some of TB's more intriguing features.
My second question involves the folders listed in Sorting Office.
Inbox and Outbox are self explanitory, but Read Messages, Replied
Messages and Kill Filters aren't. Although shown as folders, I
can't find hide nor hair of them other than in Sorting Office
  windows.

What can they be used for?

Once again a problem with international keyboards (mine is Swiss
german), where the '=' key is not on its 'usual' place (it's Shift-0,
but Shift-Ctrl-0 doesn't work). I tried the key where '=' sits on
english keyboards (two keys right of 0, is that correct?) and
Ctrl-thiskey is 'next-unread' (Ctrl-] or Ctrl-[ on english keyboards)
... :-(

Does anybody know what to press on swiss or german keyboards? And can
somebody explain the algorithm that TB! (Delphi?) uses to
map key combinations to commands?

As a matter of fact, if the source and destination folders are the
same, a message won't be moved if you apply a filter using hot-key.
Not so obvious as it should (we will try to make it better), but it
works :-)

The exception is when the filter conditions should apply - then the
message should be moved to the destination folder...

Just in case you don't know, you may hold down the Alt key and click
on the status icon of any unread mail (the yellow envelope icon),
which is the equivalent of View/Display/Only Unread Mail, but a tad
simpler. The same technique applies to other part of the message
list. E.g., click on a person's name in the "From" column while
holding down the Alt key and TB would show only messages from the
same sender.

I know this doesn't fill your need about keeping the same view

I use a common folder for TBBETA and TBUDL. I colour code the
messages from each list so that I can tell which is from where by
colour. I use manual read filters to keep the folder message count down
so that only two days worth of messages are present at a time. If you
wish for only read messages to be present then use automatic read
filters. The messages will be moved as soon as you read them.

I might not understand you correctly, and this is not exactly what
you want, but turning off threading plus sorting by received time
would gather all new mail together. TB doesn't remember View/Display
setting from session to session, but it does remember the threading
setup. If you read only new mail to the degree that you want to set
"show unread messages only" as default (which, regrettably, can't be
done at the moment), then threading is of little use anyway.

I do think the Ticker is a cool feature. However, that said, I still

with when repeatedly asked to do "something like" Eudora's labels.
IIRC when I used Eudora I could assign a message to belong to one of
10 groups, each of which could be assigned a name and a colour. These
were the "labels". TB's technology is similar but IMHO more versatile.

Oh hell. Wanna know something funny? Ritlabs did the same thing a lot of
people do in this regard. They created a dialog and there is a checkbox there
to turn off that dialog if so desired. OK, I can respect that. Don't like
the feature, don't like the verbage, but at least they let you turn it off.

Now, I have to ask. If you uncheck the dialog and later want that feature
how are you going to turn it back on if you can never get the dialog to come
up to check that box again?

It isn't in the options, tools or account properties. I just checked.
Amazingly enough this is a common problem. If I recall correctly either
Netscape or OE, when they first implemented it on the "do you want us to check
to see if we're the default browser" dialog, I turned it off. Later I wanted
it to check since I dropped Opera for a while. I couldn't get it to come back
nor was there a way to set it as the default browser anywhere. I had to
uninstall and reinstall to get it as default.

> [+] Shift/Ctrl/Alt keys pressed make Reply button to work different

That almost makes up for the subject dialog, almost. When are they going
to do the same for delete? Do you know how annoying it is to try to delete a
thread with the mouse and CNTL-SHIFT- doesn't work? :)

I just hope we're not doing something like saying that PMMail's message

look the same. They vaguely act the same. But functionally they are
different. :)

Me too. I complained about that practically on the day colour grouping
was introduced IIRC. It's a major shortcoming of what, IMHO, is one of
the greatest plus points of TB. Other major pluses include
QuickTemplates, the power of template macros and the versatility of
the filters. The last is only marred by the insistence that filtered
messages have to /move/ somewhere (shudder).

Still, last minor bug I reported Stefan wrote me that he was hard at

It will wrap automatically during if you have auto-format and
auto-wrap both enabled for the editor. Otherwise you can insert
returns into the quick template at will. Also you can prepare the text
in a dummy message, cut it and finally paste it into the new Quick
template.

Following use of an unformatted Quick Template in a message, a simple
Alt-L (or Alt-J) keystroke will reflow the text.

K> 2. If I want only unread messages displayed, do I have to manually
K> set that each time the program opens by going to View and then
K> Display or can I set a default for only unread messages to show?

This is a new Universe. The Bat has the ticker. The ticker contains
all unread messages (from all folders that may be selected to
contribute their new mail content to the ticker - see folder options).
When you open new mail from the ticker, you are presented with a
single "virtual" folder containing *only* the new mail. There is an
interesting keyword in here regarding "from all folders" ISFA messages
can be pre-filtered and still gathered to one place for mass-viewing.

I find this facility far more versatile than any other scheme by far.
Of course, that's just my opinion and others may well disagree.

You are quite correct. I am leaving all messages retried with The
Bat! on the server and am periodically downloading them all to Eudora.
If I write a message that is important I forward a copy of it to

That's because you don't want auto line wrapping when you're using a
long string of macros or regular expressions. One way to work around
this is to open a new message, type what you want in your template and
then copy and paste it into the quick template editor.

Note that even the new message editor may feel strange to someone new
to TB. You can make the editor behave more like a typical windows
editor by using the autoformat options. Be warned that this feature
has some oddities, so you may want to switch back and forth between
using it and disabling it. I would post more details, but I can not
beat the explanations Allie (aka Curtis) has given previously.
Unfortunately, I can not find one of his explanations right now. You
may have better luck searching the archives for this list.

Colour groups are essentially the same as labels in Eudora. TB also
lets you change the font as well as the color, however. You can choose
whether to view the label associated with each color or just the in
the list of message color (View > Message List Columns).

> 2. What is the purpose of flagging a message? Is it only that it

I use flags to mark messages that I want to get back to later for
various reasons. The big advantage of the flag is that I can search
for all my flagged messages, throughout my account, and thereby find
messages that I wanted to deal with but which may be tucked away in
various folders.

Color groups.

Take care,

Assuming, of course, that all flagged messages are of a similar group. It
is just a bit with functionality that can be replicated a variety of different
ways. So far I've not found a single way of organizing the message list that
flags addresses any better than any other method.

Well, if labels are colors and he knows of colors, why the question. I'm
puzzled.

More newbie Questions

2000-07-13 Thread Katsmeow

Thought of two more.

1. Quick Templates look great to me and I want to use them. However,
when I start to type in one, it is all one line and the line does not
wrap. Also when I insert it in my message it does not wrap. It does
wrap for the recipient but that doesn't help me. I need to be able to
have it wrap on the screen for me as I need to customize the exact
language so need to be able to see it. For example, in Eudora I have
stationary where I have set up a form letter to send to people who buy
books. I fill in manually the amount. I am having problem setting up
a quick template as it is hard to do this when it won't wrap during
creation or when I insert it. I am sure I am doing something
wrong...but what?

2. If I want only unread messages displayed, do I have to manually
set that each time the program opens by going to View and then Display
or can I set a default for only unread messages to show?

Hi Katsmeow,

On 13 July 2000 at 13:42:30 GMT -0500 (which was 19:42 where I
live) [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote and made these points on the subject
of "Newbie questions":

The Bat goes a step further even than that. By using Address Book
templates (which override folder templates) you can get specific
formats/sigs for specific destination addresses.

K> Also, Eudora gives me big resource problems.

You are coming to TB at a good time then. A lot of resource issues
were handled in the most recent mailbox database improvements.

K> 1. What is a "colour group"? How do you use it and how do you

Colour groups are a fairly new feature. You can set them up in Options
... Message list colours. You can assign them to messages in messages
lists manually or through filter actions.

K> 2. What is the purpose of flagging a message? Is it only that it
K> puts a red flag next to the message?

Yes. It can be used as a search / filter criterion too.

K> 3. Is there anything in The Bat comparable to labels in Eudora? If
K> so, what?

Only colour groups and memos. It's a different universe.

K> 4. Searching. How to do you search across all mailboxes.
K> Alternatively is there a way to search across specified mailboxes?
K> This is fairly easily done in Eudora.

Using the Message finder dialog (tools .. search). You can search a
specified folder, include sub folders, the whole account or all
accounts.

K> 5. I read somewhere that the next version will have MAPI. I saw
K> speculation that would be out in February this year but obviously that
K> is delayed.

The speculation was going on in February. The date speculated was end
of May.

K> Any ideas when the next version will be out and why it is held up?

We know that V2 is being worked on. We have no Beta (or even alpha)
launch dates. It'll be there when it appears, I suppose.

K> 6. Anyone know if additional font choices are expected for later
K> versions.

Please refer to the article on Fonts in the FAQ. There is good reason
for the restriction.

K> 7. Oh, when writing a message, is there any easy way to switch back
K> to the main The Bat page? I find myself needing to do so, and find
K> it less than easy to do so.

Use the "Options .. Define System Hot-Keys" settings to pervert a key
to your own design for this purpose.

Re: Newbie questions

Hello Katsmeow,

let me first ask you to not begin a new thread by replying to an
unrelated mail, because it messes up the threaded view. Thanks.

You wrote on 7/13/2000, 8:42 PM

K> Anyway, I've read the help files but still have questions (and
K> probably more to come):
Fine.

K> 1. What is a "colour group"? How do you use it and how do you
K> create it?

You can assign each message in the message list to a "colour group".
It makes a better visual experience when navigating the folders.

You can create a colour group in Option -> Message List Colours.
You can set the font's script, style, and colour for read and unread
states separately.
In Sorting Office -> * -> Rule -> Actions you can set the colour
group, or you can filter on it (see the Advanced tab)

K> 2. What is the purpose of flagging a message? Is it only that it
K> puts a red flag next to the message?
Yes. Before flagging I usually used parking to mark a message, but it
has the side effect that I cannot remove the message in one step, so I
better like flagging. (And I am still able to use parking for
important mail)

K> 3. Is there anything in The Bat comparable to labels in Eudora? If
K> so, what?
I do not know Eudora, but maybe Memos worth a look.

K> 4. Searching. How to do you search across all mailboxes.
There are three radiobuttons in the search dialog:
o search in folder
o search in current account
o search in all accounts
The latter two options are relevant.

K> Alternatively is there a way to search across specified mailboxes?
K> This is fairly easily done in Eudora.
Not one I know.

K> 5. I read somewhere that the next version will have MAPI. I saw

I would not expect TB2 to appear in this year, maybe beta versions...

What about Alt+Tab switching or clicking to the main TB page?

K> Thanks for any help.
You're welcome.

Really? I use it quite a lot. I might be visually less obvious than
color group, but it's easy to use (with one mouse click), and easy
to sort by flag (so all flagged messages would be presented
together, which is more cumbersome to do with color groups).

If memory serves me well (it rarely does, and I used Eudora many
years ago), labels are colors.

In 1.44, which you have, they are just for highlighting. As for creating,
Message:Color Group:Edit Color Groups.

Yes. Quite pointless to me, actually. I wish I could shut that off

Labels?

God, Eudora does it so poorly it isn't funny. In the search dialog you
have search specified folder, search subfolders, search account and search all
accounts. All are fairly self-explanatory.

v2.0? Feb of this year was when the interview about it was, nothing more.
It'll be out when it is out.

What fonts would you need? AFAIK all monospaced fonts are available and
proportional fonts in email are wrong.

The main The Bat page? Huh? You mean the main window. Click on it,
Alt-TAB to it. Just like any other application.

Newbie questions

2000-07-13 Thread Katsmeow

I am a longtime Eudora user trying out The Bat. I decided to try it
out because I like the idea of templates for each mailbox (in Eudora I
always wanted to be able to have it automatically know which sig I
wanted to use for each list). Also, Eudora gives me big resource
problems.

Anyway, I've read the help files but still have questions (and
probably more to come):

1. What is a "colour group"? How do you use it and how do you create
it? I feel like I must have missed this in the help file but have not
found anything so either it isn't there or I didn't know it when I
read about it.

2. What is the purpose of flagging a message? Is it only that it
puts a red flag next to the message?

3. Is there anything in The Bat comparable to labels in Eudora? If
so, what?

4. Searching. How to do you search across all mailboxes.
Alternatively is there a way to search across specified mailboxes?
This is fairly easily done in Eudora.

5. I read somewhere that the next version will have MAPI. I saw
speculation that would be out in February this year but obviously that
is delayed. Any ideas when the next version will be out and why it is
held up?

6. Anyone know if additional font choices are expected for later
versions.

7. Oh, when writing a message, is there any easy way to switch back
to the main The Bat page? I find myself needing to do so, and find it
less than easy to do so.

Thanks for any help.
