Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Sending audio to USB DAC?
I had a look. This is the first time I've looked at this stuff so I'm not sure what I'm looking at just yet. If the unit is already running and I plug in the dac it's assigned card3, but the name is default. The jive_alsa process with device is default is already running. I see above you said this was a virtual card. I tried killing the jive_alsa process for the default device and starting it back up with the usb card, but since it's id is also 'default' I wasn't very lucky. I did play around shutting off and turning on the sound by killing and starting the jive_alsa process. A crashed it a few times doing this :) How can I start jive_also so I can output to my dac given that it can be recognized as: Code: card 1: default [USB Audio CODEC ], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 or Code: card 3: default [USB Audio CODEC ], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 -- pounce pounce's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77927 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Grahame;541103 Wrote: > Does your router allow you to achieve the same effect by > reserving/assigning a fixed IP address to a specific MAC address? Yes. Thank you for the suggestion, but I have an odd situation: My router is not wireless, but it's a nice router that I'm not in a hurry to replace. When I needed wireless, I bought a separate wireless access point and hooked it into the switch. I've found that devices asking for an IP address sometimes "talk" directly to the router (which allows reservations) and sometimes to the wireless access point (which does not allow reservations). Oddly, even wired devices are being assigned IP addresses by the wireless access point. Obviously my screwy setup isn't really Logitech's fault, but it seems like what I'm asking for is a pretty common feature on other devices. -- atrocity atrocity's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16009 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78014 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Does your router allow you to achieve the same effect by reserving/assigning a fixed IP address to a specific MAC address? On some routers this feature is called DHCP reservation. I know that I can SSH into the Radio and Touch and edit a file (which will be overwritten by a factory reset) to assign a static IP. However, the color screen on the Touch makes its analog VU meter look more appealing. I'm not sure if the problem is that the images currently only can contain 25 angles or if it's caused by the Touch limited CPU. I'm not running TinySC so I'm guessing it might be slow with TinySC active but maybe someone else is running TinySC and can inform us how the VU meters look like when it's active. There is probably a lot of improvement potential regarding the performance, I suspect no one have spent time trying to optimize the code yet. If you like completely accurate VU meters the current version on the Touch isn't good enough IMHO. However, they work good enough if you just want something that moves almost in sync with the music. If you like images, this is the analog VU meter image used for the Touch. It's an image containing the 25 supported meter positions and only two of the sub images are shown side by side on the screen simultaneously. http://svn.slimdevices.com/repos/jive/7.5/trunk/squeezeplay/src/squeezeplay/share/applets/WQVGAsmallSkin/images/UNOFFICIAL/VUMeter/vu_analog_25seq_b.png The images created by jstraw looks a bit better IMHO. coma;540961 Wrote: > > I couldn't find any video clips of any VU meters running on the Touch, > so thought I'd ask if someone could take a few moments and post a video > of theirs. > Unfortunately I don't have a video camera that's fast/good enough to record them. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info) (Install my plugins through Extension Downloader) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library, Title Switcher and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.isaksson.info/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77117 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Vs Transporter as a transport
I have both a Transporter and a Touch and I recently did a very unscientific comparison (not a DBT, in fact I didn't even have the sound levels matched) between them. I only compared the analog output of each device and I preferred the sound of the Transporter to the Touch but overall the sound of the two units was very, very close. In fact so close that I attributed the very minor differences to the fact that I was using the Transporter's balanced analog outputs whereas the Touch only has single ended analog outputs. But since the information above is of little consequence to someone looking only to use the digital outputs of either unit here is something that I noticed during my testing and which I haven't seen much information or comments on: While playing back some high resolution (24 bit/96 kHz) flac files the Touch needed to rebuffer the signal much more frequently than the Transporter (both devices were connected wirelessly to my network). The wireless signal strength (as indicated by the Transporter) is approximately 70% and I attributed the difference in rebuffering to the fact that the Transporter has two very nice antennas while the Touch only has one well hidden antenna. My very unscientific conclusions are that: 1) If you are going to be playing many hi-rez files streamed via a wireless network with less than 75% signal strength at the location of the player (especially if the files are going to be streamed as wav rather than flac) I would get a Transporter. 2) If the device is going to be connected via wired Ethernet or you have greater than 80% wireless signal strength at the location of the player I would go with the much less expensive Touch. So in addition to the balanced analog outputs one can also add the dual wi-fi antennas to the list of things that make the Transporter a better piece of equipment. -- ralphpnj Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels -> Snatch -> The Transporter -> Transporter 2 'Last.fm' (http://www.last.fm/user/jazzfann/) ralphpnj's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10827 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77973 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] My thoughts on the sound quality of the Touch
After the first night (a couple of posts up), I let the Touch play for 3 days straight. After the first night, the Touch SQ rounded out with full orchestra (e.g., Symponic Dances on Reference Recordings) sounding very convincing. Last night (a week after the above post) I compared the Touch line-level outputs with the coaxial digital out--> Audiosector S/PDIF DAC. These two sources were connected to adjacent inputs on my preamp, so it was easy and quick to switch back and forth. The line level outputs were a touch louder, but the difference was small and I did not attempt to match levels. I consistently preferred the digital out-->Audiosector DAC over the line outputs. The difference was quite small, but "there" every time. I heard a slight improvement in clarity, for example a little more sweetness in high solo violin using digital out-->DAC. The overall tonal balance seemed unchanged, and I doubt I would be able to tell which source I was listening to if left the room and came back. They're very close, and both very good. One of the jive_alsa processes is hard wired to card 2 (which is normally the Wolfson), that might be part of the problem. This looks like the DAC was there at boot which caused the card numbers to be switched around. Try hotplugging which should add the USB DAC after the others so it should not mess up the existing numbers. I think its going to take some udev programming to come up with clean card numbers, thats out of my realm of expertise. Yes if you have a 270x based device you will have to use plug, squeezeplay always sends out 24 bit. This is looking like hotplugging may be the best way to go for now, but that can cause problems after something like a power failure. There are two things here: 1) DAC's need a muting ciruit to prevent rubbish being sent out when clock lock is lost. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Analogue/digital VU
I appreciate the great work going into these custom VU meter displays and before I install one I would like to see a photo of what they actually look like running on the Touch. A youtube video clip of the VU meter in action would be even better. If it works as well as the old VU meter on the SB3 in terms of responsiveness, I would like to take the time to develop and contribute the png images needed to make a McIntosh style blue VU meter. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch availablity
I don't live in the US but I travel frequently there. It doesn't seems that the Logitech website will allow non-US cards or PayPal, while Amazon does so I use that. Amazon will ship DVDs, CDs and books abroad but not electronics so I send stuff to my hotel in advance and since I usually stay there for 3 or 4 days I need to make sure stuff will arrive while I'm there, so far I've been 100% lucky in terms of things arriving on time and zero DOAs (only exception was my SB Radio power brick but that was easily replaced by ordering one from Mouser.com). I do use Amazon Prime though. This week I'm not on the road but a friend is and I've already ordered my Touch, Amazon claims stuff will be there on time, I'll let you know how this one goes as yesterday Amazon reported no availability in the morning and 2-3 days availability when I checked at night. After plugging in the DAC you can ssh in and do aplay -l to find the device name. The alsa interface in squeezeplay sends to "default" so the simplest way to get data to the USB dac is to redefine default to be the USB DAC. Currently in the alsa config file there is a virtual card defined which clones its input to both the S/PDIF and DAC drivers. That virtual card is then set to default. You can add the USB DAC to the virtual card as well and then you have all three playing at the same time. One thing to look out for is that the device name and or card number is different depending whether the DAC is present at boot or hotplugged. So always do it the same way. [SlimDevices: Touch] Pushing power button does not start OFF screensaver
Several people in different threads have reported that sometimes pushing the power button does not bring up the OFF screensaver. I've filed a bug for this, if you are having this problem please vote for this bug: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=16148 In looking into the bug I have been able to duplicate it. It happens when the Touch is not connected to any server (external SBS on LAN, TinySBS, or MySB.com). This can happen if the Touch is not connected externally to anything and no USB drive (or SD card) is inserted, or if TinySBS has died for some reason. For those that are having the problem can you confirm that this is indeed when the problem happens. I have not been able to make it happen if the Touch is connected to a server. But I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it. ;) Other than simply unplugging the HD every time I'd suggest getting a cheap power strip with a ON/OFF button. -- toby10 toby10's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12553 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77932 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] SQ: streaming vs. local operation
I am wondering if it is a good idea to take the headphone output as reference. As far as I have seen (within Alsa) the headphone out seems to be fired by a Wolfson WM 8974. The AKM DAC for the analog out has much better specs. Still I'd guess that the SPDIF performs best, since also the AKM can't be called a high-end performer if you look at the datasheet. I looked up the specs of both chips. The Wolfson chip specs are not what I'd call impressive. It seems that they havn't put much focus on the headphone output. The Wolfson is btw running 16 bit and 48khz max. (It seems that they are running it with a 2nd jive_alsa process - AKM and SPDIF though goes 24bit and are fired in parallel by Alsa) No idea if they add dither to the 16bit signal of the Wolfson after volume control. Usually this should be done. This would change the results even further. So. If measurements should be done, than SPDIF is IMO the first choice. Is my point. Hi Phil, FWIW, I see your point and (as usual) you seem to make good sense. However, of course the other recent currently-branded Logitech products in the Squeezebox family line, also have both connection options and -do- auto-powerdown the wifi connection with wired use. So,... Oh well. :) Personally I hope Logitech will soon say something on the matter, and/or better still, put an appropriate wifi-poweroff option in the Touch user menus. Especially, since there are some incredibly talented people in this thread that have already found some promising hacks, that seem to prove it can be properly done. I wish Logitech would pay you guys for doing that (or at least give you free Touch's, we could call it further beta-test!) ;) -- NewBuyer NewBuyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7862 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76291 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] digital silence between tracks?
I have followed this thread with interest although not a Touch owner. My Duet is optical connected with my Caiman DAC and I get a short twirp sound when tracks are changing. Standard redbook into FLAC. If the Duet keeps the signal rate going between tracks should this not only happend when I initially starts playing something?! I bought the Caiman DAC this christmas and didn't notice the twirp at first. I guess that I have to take an evening pulling cables and check this out and then write Stanley B about it. Found the following tidbit on techradar that could explain it as a Caiman problem: Care in component selection extends to the use of reed relays for muting. The possible drawback of these is that they take a finite time to operate when a track opens rapidly from 'digital black', but Beresford has ingeniously included enough time delay to allow for this, so you don't actually miss any music (it would only be a milli-second or two, but the audible result can be an annoying click) -- slate Main: Duet -> Beresford Caiman -> Carver A-500x -> B&W 704 Office: Duet -> Technics SU-V50 -> Stax SR84 Pro Server: Zotac IONITX-A, 4 GB, 1 TB WD EADS, Win7 w. 7.6 (SQLite) slate's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=30502 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77849 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
[SlimDevices: Touch] Lost my database when reconnect usb hard drive on the touch
Hello, I've just bought a squeezebox touch and i use a usb hard drive (western digital mirror edition 2x500go, raid 1 , fat 32). I use the squeezbox server of the touch with this hd. The first time i connect my hard drive on the touch (by usb port), she scan all my music without any problems. But now, when i disconnect and reconnect my hard drive, the touch don't find all my music, i can't access to the album, or artist or anything else. I try to restart the squeezebox server on the touch but nothing appends. The only solution i find is to reset the touch to factory parameters, then she re-scan my hard drive. Do you have any solution ? Thanks a lot for your response. -- san_goten san_goten's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37848 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77983 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Peter314;539892 Wrote: > Have you checked the latest research..? > > http://miscellanea.wellingtongrey.net/comics/2007-05-27--the-truth-about-wireless-devices.png Haven't seen that particular comic in a while! Ridicule-tactics are, if nothing else, at least sometimes creative and humorous. :) These types of comics usually at least under their surface suggest/assume, that science is God-like with all knowledge and already knows or has established -everything possible- about the thing in question. Sometimes they also implicitly suggest that product designers and marketers are "scientists" concerned for your health, who _obviously_ would NEVER try to sell you something possibly dangerous! So anybody who is ever concerned, must be ignorant/irrational/crazy etc :D On a less funny note: I remember seeing similar (perhaps even early versions of the same) comics used, to ridicule people concerned about the possible cumulative unhealthy effects of tobacco (and still earlier, for asbestos...) Sometimes you also see marketers, or such ridicule-comics, making fun of concerned consumers by portraying them as older or "mature" (or at least somehow "old-fashioned"), and therefore(!) somehow childish or stupid. Hey after all, why not just buy things now and think later - after all, you & your family all have good health insurance, don't you? ;) -- NewBuyer NewBuyer's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7862 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76291 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
