[SlimDevices: Touch] Power help please.

2014-02-01 Thread DaveKen

Sadly, I have a self inflicted problem :( . On rearranging some of my
wiring I have managed to plug in a connector jack supplying 16v DC
instead of the required 5v DC. It will not now power up although the red
LED behind the optical connector 'shutter' still lights up so it is not
yet completely dead (perhaps?) when the 5v supply is reconnected. Does
anyone have any ideas if and how it might be resurrected please?
Thanks for any information,
Dave.

Hi Guido,
Thanks very much for your response. I am not very computer literate -
I know just about enough to be dangerous - my music library physically
resides on a free standing self powered USB HDD and I have full copies
(for backup purposes) on a large SATA HDD in the PC itself and on an
ethernet connected NAS in another room. I can point Logitech Media
Server (running on my PC) at any of these and they are always found and
scanned properly and fully according to the resulting scan report. I can
individually select specific tracks or let the Touch select them
randomly and all the relevant details and artwork appear on the Touch
screen, the 'Play' button changes to the 'Pause' button but the Progress
Bar accross the bottom refuses to move and no music comes out. If I move
the progress button by hand it will moves but immediately freezes at the
spot I leave it. Pressing the 'Next' or 'Previous' buttons always
results in the correct action but still no music plays. I believe that
the Progress indicator seems to be trying to move at times, it sort of
stutters but refuses to move.
I have tried shutdowns and restarts and factory resets numerous times
but nothing has any effect.
It beats me!!
TIA,
Dave.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Help with non-playing Touch please

2012-06-08 Thread DaveKen

Hi,
I apologise if this has been asked before because I know I'm not the
only one suffering this fault but I have not seen any advice as to how
to put it right. I have been watching a thread on another forum which
seems to have died without solving the problem so I thought I'd ask
here.
My Touch has been playing as expected since I had it, virtually the
first day they were shipped. I have always updated the software when new
player or server software has been released. I did flirt with
Soundchecks mods but being a PC code numptie I pulled out of that
without being able to complete it. I also installed EDO mods but could
not discern any improvement so did a factory reset and reverted to 'as
you were'. After this the Touch again worked perfectly but somewhere
along the line since then it has stopped - I suspect it might have
coincided with a software upgrade but I am not sure about that. Since
then I have done many Factory Resets and Software updates but still the
problem persists.
And the problem is that EVERYTHING appears normal but the track
progress bar does not move and no sound comes out of ANY of the outputs
- it is just as if the player freezes just as it's about to start.
FWIW, changing Menu options produces clicks and/or bumps in the
headphones when connected at the rear of the Touch.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem is or how to resolve it
PLEASE? - I'm missing my music.
TIA,
Dave.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Numptie Appeal for Help Please

2011-07-03 Thread DaveKen

Hi Guys,
I've just about given up on this, hence my silence over recent weeks. I
removed ALL references to Norton from my PC some time ago and it hasn't
made the slightest difference. I've just e-mailed Touch Support asking
them to have a look at it and fix it or replace it as it seems beyond
redemption as far as I can see.
No matter what I'm playing, tracks from my PC or internet radio, it
continually defaults as far as the screen is concerned and eventually
shows the digital clock, (as if switched off) with the music still
playing. Beautiful SQ but annoying when you can't be sure what's
playing. I have an iPod Touch on which I have installed the Logitech
Squeezebox app which gets me over this problem in some ways but I'd
much rather have a properly fully working SQBX Touch.
Thanks for all your interest.
Dave.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Numptie Appeal for Help Please

2011-05-28 Thread DaveKen

Hi Phil Gary,
An interesting update for you.
I'm now back from my holidays, browner but poorer. Since returning I
have acquired over 600 24/96 and DVD-A tracks which I have put into
their own library. Nothing else has been changed. My Touch re-scans
this new library with no problems and the display does exactly what the
display is supposed to display. Reverting to the previous (non Hi-Res)
library leads the scan and display to revert to the earlier
misbehaviour.
This suggests to numptie me that the problem may not be Norton related
but somehow related to some of the non Hi-Res files, but I know nowt!!
Any thoughts guys?
Thanks for any comments,

Hi Phil,
Thanks for coming back to me on this one. I'm now preparing to
disappear on holiday until mid May and we have our 3 house cats and our
son's Springer Spaniel to relocate in the next few days so PC time is
going to be non-existent. Can we take a rain check on it until my
return please?
First thing I'll do is try and get rid of disc nos. using mp3Tag and
let you know how I go on.
Regarding the persistent anti-virus interference, my PC is relatively
old and was originally supplied with XP Media Centre installed but that
has in turn been 'upgraded' to Vista Ultimate and then to Win7 HE. Each
installation has always had an anti-virus programme installed, which
may have changed brands with some of the changes, so I'm wondering if
some long forgotten vestige of one of these anti-virus programmes is
still lurking around making mischief.
Thanks again,
Dave.

Hi Phil,
I hear and accept what you say BUT ...
my Touch performance is going from bad to worse and I feel like
throwing in the towell - the SQ is superb but the user friendliness
can only be described as CRAP!!! It may well be my fault, or more
accurately, the incompatibility of the Touch software with currently
loade software BUT
I got my first Touch in May last year and it ran PERFECTLY when it ran
but the PSU jack was a very sloppy fit such that any sort of movement
near it caused a power off. Logitech, to their credit, exchanged it for
a new unit without question and this ran like a dream until this problem
started.
The result of eliminating all non-FLAC files and then cleaning up the
FLAC files and using mp3Tag to associate them with any missing cover
art has now resulted in: -
1) my FLAC folder now consists of a list of 9,550 FLAC tracks, none
of which are associated with any folders (albums), just a large
collection of random single tracks.
2) the Touch screen has now defaulted to displaying information about
a single track (Mary Black, Babes in the Wood, FWIW) which is frozen
(nothing moves), irrespective of what's playing.
3) Win Explorer tells me I have 9,550 tracks in my FLAC AND
foobarFLAC libraries but scanning either under Touch only shows 483, no
matter how many times I repeat the excercise,
4) there are probably more idiosyncracies but I can't think of them
ATM.
Listening to music is supposed to be relaxing and enjoyable but with my
Touch it is just the opposite!!! - not a happy bunny !!
Dave.

It's still making beautiful noises thank goodness and, ATM, the screen

Hi Gary and Phil,
Herewith the latest version(s?) of my Server Log, both taken this
morning. One version is from clicking on the 1000 line option at the
bottom of the Information tab page and the other taken from Show Server
Log option on the Advanced page of the Sqbx Server Control Panel. I show
them both because to me (after a quick peek) they seem to be different.
Again I don't know whether it's relevant but the first two time I
tried to do a Wipe and Rescan they both terminated VERY early (200+
tracks)at Merge Various Artists but when I looked into it the iTunes
option box was ticked. When I un-ticked that the scan proceeded to scan
all 9555 FLAC files but again stated that it had terminated prematurely
at Merge Various Artists - hope this helps.

Hi Gary,
Thanks for your very helpful post above.
This is just an update so that you know I'm not ignoring you :) .
I've set about 'cleaning' the FLAC library using mp3Tag and it's
proving very time consuming, to say the least. First I got rid of
anything that wasn't FLAC. This left me with a little over 9,500 tracks
and then I started associating cover art with each CD or individual
track. I'm about halfway through them ATM.
I don't know whether this is relevant but the screen 'lock up' or
'freeze' also occurs when listening to internet radio. First thing that
happens is that the 'Now Playing' track info disappears, then the screen
doesn't change when the programme changes, say on the hour, when another
DJ clocks in, the screen continues to display. This cannot be due to the
state of my FLAC library surely?
Cheers,
Dave.

Even though I could not find any *.myi and *.myd files on my PC which

an instruction to exclude them from the future scans. Should I now do

Thanks for all your efforts and patience, it really is much

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Numptie Appeal for Help Please

Hi Phil,
I'll make a closer study tomorrow and let you know what I find about
the default timing but, as it can happen at random at any point between
a few seconds and a few hours, it might prove difficult.
From memory it does default around the point at which it changes tracks
but I would not guess as to whether it's at the end of one or the
beginning of the next. As an aide memoir I would remind you that many
of my tracks are from a portable HDD that a couple of friends and I
used to share musics and I subsequently found that many of them were
mp3 format after I'd loaded them. Others are FLAC files which have been
downloaded from FileMail and Dropbox and quite a few of those are hi-res
FLACs.
Hope this helps,
Dave.

Hi Guys,
Shame on some of you - you obviously didn't keep everything crossed
overnight, as requested. This morning the screen had defaulted to it's
usual (for me) screen with no 'Now Playing' or cover art displaying.
Another thing which might be relevant is that when setting it up
yesterday I changed the background (wallpaper) but this morning the
previous wallpaper was on screen.
I started off the thread asking if I had got (another) faulty Touch and
this incident does nothing to persuade me that I haven't. My first Touch
behaved impeccably at all times EXCEPT that it had a loose power jack
connection which meant that it lost power if ANYTHING near it was
moved. It was changed without question by Logitech direct for this one
but I'm beginning to wonder if I'm unlucky again.
I have done another Factory Reset and am now listening to internet
radio - so far it is behaving as it should - I'll keep you posted.
Cheers,

Hi Gary,
I'm beginning to think that maybe I don't have everything loaded or set
up that I should have. In your 2 latest posts immediately above this you
have shwn me a total of 3 screen shots. I cannot access any of these
screens. If I do a Search (just above the Start button) for Squeezbox

Server. Ignoring the last one of these for obvious reasons, clicking on
either of the first 2 takes me immediately to the Sbx Server Control
Panel. There is no way that I can find of getting to the screen
showingin your screen shots.
Am i missing something obvious (very probably)? Could you offer me
basic, simple, idiot-proof, key-by-key instructions as to how I display
the screen required because I'm beginning to think it ain't there.
TIA,
Dave.

Hi again Gary,
If I've got this right my respnses to each of your points are posted
below the relavent point below: -

garym;619406 Wrote:
Odd. And to confirm, even though you don't get track info, does the
track play audio just fine. And can you fast forward to next track,
etc. That is, you don't SEE track info/art, but you do hear the track
and it plays all the way through, etc.

Yes, that's exactly the case. I would add one further bit of info
though. I happened to be looking at the screen last night at exactly
the point at which it dropped the track and cover art info. It happened
within a few seconds of the end of a track, the track terminated a few
seconds early and the next track started playing with NO gap between
and at the same time the track and cover art info disappeared (it was
there for the first track but gone for the second track). This happened
about 15 to 20 minutes into the listening session.

This is probably normal. You might have the digital clock set as your
screensaver. When it starts showing digital clock does it continue to
 play the AUDIO just fine?
I have the digital clock set to display when I'm not listening to music
via the Touch.

I think this is an important symptom. Assuming the track's audio is
still playing fine (as asked above), the fact that you can't control
anything from any source and you don't see info tells me that the
player is somehow losing some portion of the communication between the
Server (SbS) and the player (Touch). I wonder if this is some sort of
antivirus program that kicks in after a while.
I recall you have other things running on your Server Computer related
to video, etc. Are you using TWONKY or something like that. I wonder if
something else you are using also uses the 9000 port for communication.
If so, maybe it is something that kicks in every so often and causes
you to loose certain communication with your SbS.
I do have foobar 2000 set up on my PC to play music from the same
library as the Touch but I NEVER have them running together. Both
sources are fed by digital co-ax into my Beresford 7520 DAC which also
acts as a source switch.

Maybe you should change the port for SbS from 9000 to something else,
maybe 9001. See picture at bottom of message below. You access this
option from SbS Settings ADVANCED tab, then use the dropdown menu
in upper left hand side to select Networking.

After that you should probably reboot your computer running SbS, unplug
your touch and plug it back in after you've rebooted your computer and
 restarted SbS.
I'll try this later today and let you know - busy watching football
(soccer to you ;-) ) at the moment.

This is normal. the regular TOUCH remote is an infrared remote. It just
uses line of sight and is not communicating via your Local Area
 Network.

Thanks again Gary for your continuing help - much appreciated.
Dave.

I don't have access to the PC and Touch at the moment so I wont be able

somewhere :-) .
AND, from memory, I don't get anything like the screen shot you provide

Regarding upgrading the power supply, my logic is that it could go
ahead in parallel with the other things as the two things are totally
seperate. I'm currently (sorry :-) ), supplying my Touch with 5V DC
which comes out of a linear PSU and is then fed through a JLH Ripple
Eater (without current limiter) and, IMHO, it does lift the SQ
considerably. Like I've said before I'm more than happy with the noises
that the Touch supplies and it is only the outstanding SQ that makes me
want to persist in getting the Now Playing display sorted.
Thanks again,

SITUATION HAS NO EFFECT ON MY SCREEN SO IT IS A PROBLEM FOR ME i'M
 AFRAID ;-).

Just to follow up, have you now got all the issues ironed out of your
setup OTHER THAN this now playing issue? yES THAT IS NOW THE SITUATION
 - THE TOUCH NOW SEEMS TO BE BEHAVING ITSELF IN THAT SENSE. HOWEVER

WHICH I HAVE NOW INSTALLED SUCCESSFULY - ONE RELATED TO THE SOFTWARE
ON MY NAS WHICH I HAVE YET TO SUCCESSFULLYT LINK TO WITH THE TOUCH BUT
THAT'S ANOTHER PROBLEM FOR ANOTHER DAY :-).
And to be clear, when you say the info fails to appear, what appears
instead? A blank screen? Something else? DIFFICULT TO DESCRIBE BUT I
GET THE NORMAL BACKGROUND WHICH SHOWS WHEN THE 'NOW PLAYING' INFO IS
DISPLAYED BUT THE TRACK AND COVER ART IS MISSING. PUT ANOTHER WAY I GET
THE BLACK BAR AT THE TOP OF THE SCREEN WITH THE LEFT POINTING ARROW AT
TOP LEFT ON THIS BAR, 'NOW PLAYING - 11 OF 21' (or similar) IN
THEMIDDLE AND THE 3-BAR 'LIST' SYMBOL AT THE RIGHT END ON THIS BAR. AT
THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN I GET ALL THE USUAL BACK, PAUSE, FORWARD,
REPEAT, AND LIST SYMBOLS, AND VOLUME CONTROL SLIDE BAR. THE SCREEN
PROPER JUST SHOWS THE TIME ELAPSED AND TO PLAY SLIDE BAR.
FWIW IT HAS JUST REVERTED TO THIS SCREEN AS I AM TYPING THIS AND IT
EEMED TO COINCIDE WITH THE TRACK THAT WAS PLAYING FINISHING PREMATURELY
AND ALSO THE TIME ELAPSED AND TO PLAY SLIDE BAR IS FROZEN AT THE FULLY
PLAYED/NOTHING TO PLAY POINT (R HAND END). IT DID THIS WITHIN 15
MINUTES OF STARTING IT UP AND AFTER ABOUT 5 TRACKS.
What have you got your SCREENSAVER set to? Go to settings Screen
Screensavers and make sure you have the screensaver for WHEN PLAYING
set to now playing. Otherwise, after a short period of time it will
revert to whatever you've set as the screensaver (which could be
blank). I suspect this may be your problem. Double check this. You
essentially have a screensaver setting for when playing (which I choose
nowplaying), when stopped (which i choose one of the clocks) or off (and
I choose a different clock for this).
I HAVE GOT ( AND 'ALWAYS' HAD), MY SCREENSAVER SETTINGS EXACTLY AS YOU
HAVE YOURS.

everything is behaving faultlessly. Later today I plan to insert the
CL-less RE into the circuit between PSU and Touch.
Cheers,

 larger.

Hi Phil,
Regarding your quoted comments above, can I re-refer you to my update
in post No.14 above, the salient bit of which I quote below: -

I would be pleased to receive your advice on the following. I have
another linear PSU with 4 outputs (again mod'd for audio use by another
friend knowledgeable on such matters). Two of these outputs are 15v (so
we can ignore them in this context, particularly as they are not
connected to anything) but the other two are both a nominal 5v. They
actually check out at 5.05 and 5.09v according to my cheapo MM. Leaving
the RE out of the circuit I coupled one of these 5v outputs upto the
Touch and got nothing. I then coupled both outputs together and fed the
total output to the Touch and ...
Hey Presto, it powers up and plays and although it's very early days I
think it plays better than with the supplied wallwart. Again the RE is
not in this circuit. So can you advise whether combining a 5.05 and a
5.09v DC output which both originate from the same non-toroidal
transformer is electrically and audio-wise a safe thing to do? I plan
to have a good listening session with it in this condition, unless you
advise otherwise, and the put the RE back in circuit tomorrow and see
what happens then.
Thanks for any help.

I really would appreciate your comments on the above - please
remember I'm a know-nothing numptie when it comes to electrics so
NOTHING is obvious to me :-) . To update you further, this morning I
have put the non-current limited RE between the above PSU and the Touch
and everything is working fine - no excess warmth from the PSU or the
RE so far.
Thanks again,
Dave.

Hi Phil,
Regarding what I'm listening to at the moment the signal path, as I
understand it, goes: -
FLAC files from seperately powered free standing HDD via firewire to
Vaio MM PC, then out from Vaio via ethernet into Touch, then out via
digital co-ax into Beresford 7520 DAC (mod'd up to Caiman spec and fed

cables into Cyrus aCA7 pre, out from there via XLR to phono cables into
Cyrus XPA power amp and out from there via cryo treated silver speaker
cable to Mission 773e speakers.
Does this explain anything better?

Hi Gary and Toby,
You will no doubt be pleased to hear that my problems seems to be
fixed. I've yet to have a long listening session to confirm that
EVERYTHING is performing as it should but a direct ethernet connection
between Modem/Router and Touch, (bypassing Switch) seems to have
resolved the ethernet connection problem. Once this was done,
connection was almost instantaneous.
The problem seems (to me) to be one of incompatibility between Tenda
switch and the Touch - all other items plugged in to the switch seem
to work as they should, irrespective of which port or ethernet cable
the Touch used, but the Touch refused to to work via ethernet
irrespective of which port or cable was used.
I'll give it a good listening session over the weekend and let you know
how it goes.
Meanwhile thanks to both for your interest and tolerance.

I have it connected ONLY to PSU (supplied), ethernet cable to switch to
PC and digital co-ax to DAC. I've rebooted PC and/or factory reset the
Touch endlessly and it refuses to make an ethernet connection. It will
make a wireless connection to my network but suffers repeated dropouts,
both when listening to my music library and internet radio. On both
these options it starts off dispaying track information and cover art
but after a few track it stops doing that. I have no problems with
normal surfing the web FWIW.
In the 'screen', now playing', 'scrolling' option screen ALL the
options are lit and nothing I can do changes that.
I'm currently listening to Radio Paradise and the SQ I'm getting is
brilliant but those dropouts are a PIA, to put it mildly.
In 10 days time I should have fibre optic BBand available which the
provider estimates will give me a dowload speed of 34.4 MBps instead of
the current norm of 13 to 14 MBps - is this likely to give me less
dropouts on wireless connections?

I can confirm that the label on the back of the switch clearly
identifies it as a switch and only a switch - no mention of hub -
it is a Tenda 5 port switch if that is relevant. (1 in and 4 out)
Coincidentally, or maybe not, ALL the options in the 'Playing Now'

if it is any different I have tonight chosen the Spectrum Analyser

related to your issue (which I think is just poor WIFI connection).
This is why getting this ethernet connection issue solved is primary.

Hi Gary,
I will do as you suggest but it may take a while because my router is
in one room and my switch and PC and Touch are in another so I need to
obtain a long-ish ethernet cable. ATM I have wired 4 rooms in my house
with Cat5e cable from the router so I need a switch to give me ethernet
connections to my stuff in the listening/viewing room. And 'Yes' it is a
5 port switch - the '1 in 4 out' comment was mine, thinking it would
help to explain what it does - none of the ports is marked either
'In' or 'Out'.
And I am aware that tapping on the choices in the 'Playing Now' screen
enables me to select or deselect each choice but no matter which choice
I go for, when I navigate back to the same screen ALL the choices are
'lit'. It may not be associated to the ethernet connection problem but
surely it is not as it should be? Me being a know nothing numptie I
have no idea whether the two things are related so I just thought I'd
throw it in to complete the picture.
Thanks again for your interest and help,
Dave.
Edit/PS.
I've just had a further thought: things have moved on since I wired up
4 rooms with Cat5e cable and one of them is no longer needed so I could
re-route that cable directly to the Touch. This would give it a direct
route back to the router which might help and shouldn't do any harm.
Dave.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Normal??

2011-03-01 Thread DaveKen

Hi guys,
I've been having trouble with my Touch(see other threads), but today,
whilst trying to sort it out I noticed something strange, to me at
least, but I'm an electrical numptie.
The supplied PSU has now been connected for well over an hour but the

sockets connected so I guess it must be getting power from one of them,
most likely the USB connection I guess. Because the Touch is not
currently co-operating with my PC I cannot confirm that it is operating
normally.
Is this to be expected and, if so, why does it need a PSU anyway?
I hope to learn somethig from your answers.
TIA,
Dave.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch PSU Jack Plug

2011-03-01 Thread DaveKen

Hi guys,
I've powered my Touch with a linear 5v PSU followed by a JLH Ripple
Eater and I think it improves the SQ and quite significantly.
Unfortunately I could not find a Jack Plug which was a good fit and had
to 'batardise' (technical term) a slightly different sized one from
Maplin's but my re-engineering didn't last very long and I'm now back
to using the supplied wall wart. I have bought 3 different sets of jack
plugs and none of them have one that fits in the Touch properly. I do
not want to cut into the supplied cable to use that jack plug so can
anyone tell me where I can obtain a good fitting jack plug, or
alternative the precise technical description of the jack plug that
would fit. O.D. and length do NOT sufficiently identify what is
needed.
Any help would be appreciated. Given my non-existant soldering skills a
used power cord with the correct jack on the end might be the preferred
option.
Dave.

by Logitech under warranty (without any query, which surprised me)
because the jack plug on that one was a very loose fit such that any
movement of the Touch or the other connecting cables immediately
resulted in the Touch losing power.
Thanks for any help.
Dave.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch PSU Jack Plug

2011-03-01 Thread DaveKen

Hi Phil and Mynb,
Your inputs are much appreciated and I had no wish to doubt your
credentials Phil but, having tried several jacks with that OD and
length I naturally wanted to avoid more pointless expense. My order on
Maplin will follow this.
Cheers,
Dave.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] No track name, no album art

2011-02-28 Thread DaveKen

FWIW I'm getting exactly the same problem as the OP - I have no
automatic backup software running either. To be strictly accurate, the
first time I had a listening session after a complete (PC and Touch)
reboot the screen gave full track and cover art info but stopped at
some point during that session. Now when I switch it on it goes
immediately into 'no info' mode.
Another thing I've noticed is that, when I go into Settings, Screen,
Now Playing,Now Playing Views, ALL the available options are 'lit' and
nothing I can do will change that - does anyone else get the same
problem?
Thanks for any help.
Dave.

Hi Toby,
Thanks for your interest. Yes, I went into Network Settings last night
and disabled the wireless connection so the Vaio PC is now only
ethernet connected. This seemed to help but it took the Touch ages and
several attempts to connect to My Music. Once connected the set up
played music perfectly for a few hours EXCEPT that I noticed later that
the 'Now Playing' screen had gone blank - no scrolling and no track
information. Shutting down the Touch and restarting it then resulted in
the first track information scrolling for a second or so and then back
to no information.
And 'Yes' I am getting the 'Cannot connect to My Squeezebox.com'
message.
I love the SQ but I wish the darned thing wasn't so flakey.
Cheers,
Dave.

MY WIN7 M/C IS ON MY NETWORK - I HAVE NETWORK MAGIC (FREE VERSION)

I WOULD NEED GUIDANCE AS TO HOW TO DO THIS.

This has nothing to do with it running win7. How is the Sony Vaio
connected to the router? wi-fi or ethernet? ETHERNET, VIA A 'TENDA'

Oh and by the way, the laptop should only be connected by EITHER

BUT NOT BOTH? - NOT ARGUING, JUST WANTING TO LEARN.
Thanks again for your input,

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Numptie Appeal for Help Please

2011-02-22 Thread DaveKen

Hi guys,
With thanks to you all but particularly Phil I followed the link on how
to get the Vaio onto my main network and give it a fixed IP Adress. It
was still a bit reluctant to cooperate at first but shutting down and
restarting the PC seemed to get it back on track after a slight delay
and it's performed well all evening, no dropouts. I must have a
slightly different version of Win7 to what you referenced but I found
my way in there and made the changes. After the reboot I went back in
and was able to confirm that the new, fixed, IP Addres was still in
place so it would appear that that problem is behind us now.
Is there anything else that any of you would recommend that I should
sort out whilst I am at it?
BTW are you aware that Mr. Gates has released win7 Service Pack 1
today? I plan to update later this evening - any comments?
Cheers,
Dave.

You gotta love Tschaikovsky and Chuck Berry in the same list...Roll over

scanning errors, so you probably do have all your music now scanned
properly. I note the foobar in the directory. Do you also use
foobar2000 on the computer. I do as well, and I have foobar and SbS
pointed to the same music directory. This way I can compare totals
between the two programs and this is a good check on something getting
 out of wack.

Hi Gary,
Yep, it's fair to say that I've got eclectic tastes in music but you
won't find much post 70s pop in there!! And Yep, there is a fairly
close tie-up between foobar and SBS totals, but not exact.
At this point I am again about to expose my numptieness. I know just
about enough about PCs and networks to be dangerous and most of what I
know has been found from trial and error (the hard way ;-). For
background, my home network consists of MM PC, Workstation, Laptop and
Netbook and the Netbook and Workstation have USB printers attached to
them. We also have a number of wireless iPhones etc attached
wirelessly. Occassionally I get a message saying there is an IP Address
conflict on my network but it doesn't seem to adversely affect anything
AFAIK.
To get to the point, I cannot get my Touch to connect by ethernet now
(although it has done successfully in the past). It will connect
wirelessly but internet radio stations are intermittent due to frequent
pauses whilst it rebuffers. When it did connect by ethernet there was no
rebuffering. I have tried to enter the necessary information manually
with apparent success in that I get a message confirming the ethernet
connection but attempting to access Internet Radio results in a message
that it cannot connect to 'mysqueezebox.com'.
Can you tell me an idiot-proof way of identifying my IP Address
(192.168.0.6 ??), my Subnet Mask (255.255.255.0 ??), my Gateway IP
Address (192.168.0.1 ??), and my DNS Server IP Address (192.168.0 3 ??)
- the figures in brackets are the figures I enter to get connected but
with which it refuses to connect to 'mysqueezebox.com'. Basically I have
no idea what the DNS Server is - which item of kit does the first
requirement (IP Address) refer to, which is the DNS Server and how can
I find out what their IP Addresses are?
Sorry for the numptieness :-).
Dave.

Do you have a SINGLE router? How does the internet get to your house?
Cable? DSL. And do you have, for example, cable modem feeding a SINGLE
router. If you are getting IP conflicts, it may be because you have
more than one router on your network handing out IP addresses.
Hi Gary, Thanks for your usual help. My internet service is ADSL, said
to offer up to 20 Mbps ( by the telephone/internet service provider but
not by me!).
This is where it may start to get a little more complicated :-).
Perhaps I did not explain myself very well previously - I USED to get
the IP Address conflict message but I haven't had it for a while. I did
for a brief period try to replace my 'G' type modem router with a cheap
'N' type router, using the 'G' type in place functioning only as a
switch. My simple logic was that it might give me a bit more speed and
a few more wired ports but I could never get it to function
consistantly so I went back to square one - the IP Address problem
may well have been related to this brief trial.

Phil Leigh;612814 Wrote:
What do your iPhones connect wirelessly to?

If you don't resolve your IP conflicts, you are in for a world of
 pain.
On each PC you have, open a command prompt (run - cmd) and type
ipconfig... this will tell you how each machine is configured. Each
machine needs its own unique IP address, the same subnet and the same
 default gateway.
 See below

Phil, unless I misunderstand you I find your question about what do my
iPhones connect to rather strange but that is more of a criticism of me
than it is of you :-). I have a simple home wired and wireless network
and the iPhones connect to that,, what else is there?
Regarding the Command Prompt, again this may be where it starts getting
complicated. My Vaio MM PC is running Win7 Home Prem. but the other 3
(workstation, laptop and netbook are all running Win XP (fully updated
with Service Packs etc.). The workstation is a wired connection only,
the laptop is both wired and wireless and the netbook is wireless
only.
Running Command Prompt and ipconfig gives the following results on the
items running XP: -
All Default Gateways are 192.168.0.1
All Subnet Masks are 255.255.255.0
IP Address on workstation is 192.168.0.9
IP Address on laptop is 192.168.0.3 (ethernet) and 192.168.0.11
(wireless)
IP Address on netbook is 192.168.0.6
Because the Vaio is running Win7 the answers are somewhat different: -
Autoconfig IPv4 Address is 169.254.177.139
Subnet Mask is 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway is . (nothing other than a series of dots)
Command Prompt also lists 4 Tunnel Adapters, (3 ISATAP and 1 Teredo
Tunneling), none of which means anything to me but may, hopefully, mean
something to you :-)
Hopefully you can stick with me for a bit longer.
TIA,
Dave.

based on what you said, you have a single ROUTER attached to your modem,
and the router is handing out IP addresses via DHCP. This is ok. (I do
prefer to setup all my nonportable items with a fixed IP address, but
we can save that for later if needed).

So it sounds like you now need to get your TOUCH back connected via
ethernet instead of Wifi. Where are you connecting your TOUCH via
 ethernet. Directly to your ROUTER?

Hi Gary,
ATM I have a Netgear 834G Modem Router as the first 'stop' on my
incoming ADSL path. As you may know this has both wired and wireless
capability. I have 3 x Cat 5e cable connections going to various rooms
in the house and one Cat 5e cable going into the workstation
immediately at the side of this 834G. One room cable is unused
(currently no components in that room), one
goes into the room where the laptop is situated, into a 'plumbed-in'
wall plate and I have the laptop permanently wire connected to this
outlet. FWIW the laptop is wireless enabled and the signal in that room
is reported a excellent so it is also connected wirelessly.
The last cable is routed into our lounge, which also serves as my main
listening room and our main TV viewing room. In this room we have the
following items all with RJ45 ethernet sockets and, because they are
available, I 'have' to have them connected: -
Logitech Touch,
Sky box (satellite TV facility),
Sony Blu-Ray player,
Vaio MM PC
So I have a 'cheapo' Tenda switch on the end of the cable incoming from
the 834G and the 4 above items are coupled to that using short lengths
of Cat 5e cable. In direct answer to your question the Touch is
ethernet coupled to the Tenda switch which in turn is ethernet coupled
to the 834G router.
Cheers,
Dave.
