Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Won't Play SD Card

2011-11-08 Thread R Johnson

My Touch plays music quite nicely from a 16GB SDHC card.
Mostly high bit-rate MP3, some FLAC, etc.
Organization: Just the "normal" three level Artist/Album/Track
structure starting in the root of the card.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to queue a next album/playlist on touch without losing current

2011-09-24 Thread R Johnson

I had been having trouble with adding an album to the end of the current
playlist on the Touch. I'd press and hold the album name to get the
menu of choices. When I pressed "Add to End" the menu would disappear
without adding the album.

I'd about given up and instead used the + key on the IR remote or the
web interface (if running from my computer).

I finally figured out that a brief tap on "Add to End" is what's
needed. If pressed more than momentarily, the menu goes away.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] New to Touch and already tons of Issues...

2011-09-20 Thread R Johnson

The Western Digital "My Passport" drives came with two partitions the
last time I looked. There's a procedure to make the "CD" software
partition invisible I think.

As the Touch was designed before USB3 came out, perhaps that's part of
the problem with flash stick.

I'm usually accessing about 2500 tracks on a Windows XP box using the

on an SD card with the Tiny server.

I've noticed this behavior in the last several weekd, possibly starting
after the last upgrade of SBS on the computer. Which, BTW, had problems
completing a rescan (which may be due to a conflict with Microsoft
Security Essentials. I've now excluded MYI and MYD files, but haven't
tried to do a rescan.)

[SlimDevices: Touch] "Add to End" issue

My Touch has, over the last few weeks, decided not to honor "Add to End"

it works fine from the IR remote. It did this before and after the

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Add to Playlist - nicely

2010-10-29 Thread R Johnson

I had the Touch for months now, and I still have trouble with adding
Albums or individual tracks.

I'll have to read the Feature Guide. Hmmm... It seems you CAN'T add a
single track. From page 10: "Note: When you select a song that is part
of the album, the entire album becomes part of your Current Playlist."

A curious approach. I'd have thought that selecting individual
tracks/songs to add to a playlist would be highly desirable.

I'll bite.

Comparative reviews of high end audio component seem impractical to me.
That's fine for Consumers Report, or for Blu-ray players in a HT
magazine.

I've subscribed to Stereophile for ages, and periodically to TAS. I
ENJOY reading the reviews, but most are for products far more expensive
than I'd ever buy. But there are also reviews of more modestly priced
gear, such as Kal's forthcoming review of the $299 Touch.

Over the course of time, there have been reviews of products that might
suit my needs. That's how I learned about the PSB speakers I now use.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] External Hardrive plugged into USB on Touch

2010-08-31 Thread R Johnson

Right now I'm just using an SDHC card, but I'm rather sure that my OLD
Western Digital "My Passport" USB powered drive worked fine with the
Touch. Many people use USB drives with the Touch.

Most of the NEW WD drives have TWO partitions - one small one that
emulates a CD, and then the main data area. This has caused problems
for many people, including, I think, some Touch users.

If your HP does something similar, that may be the problem. If
possible test the Touch with another USB drive or two...

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/192

2010-08-25 Thread R Johnson

Thanks, Phil.
I downloaded Audacity.

I looked at some spectra from the two HD Tracks selections I've
purchased.
Selection #1 (24/96) clearly has content out to better than 30KHz.
Selection #2 appears to roll off sharply at 19KHz ending at 21-22KHz,
and looks very much like the CD version's spectrum. I was hoping that
#2, an SACD transfer, would be a "real" 24/88.2 file. Maybe it's 24,
but at least so far as I can tell, it's just upsampled 44.1.

I'd like to thank Mortslim for his research in this matter. Perhaps
he's been overly concerned about legal niceties, but I've now seen
evidence that I've paid for a "high-resolution" download that's NOT
what I thought I was buying.

I've had my "standalone" Touch since the middle of April. For the first
month or so, it kept good time. A week or two before this thread
started, it started losing time.

As I've mentioned before, my Touch only has a weak wireless connection
to a friend's router, but this configuration has not changed. Some
days ago I reset the Touch by disconnecting the power. As expected, it
took several tries to get a good enough wireless connection to enable

After that, it's been losing about 30 seconds a day. Very curious. I
wonder why it kept good time for perhaps six weeks or more, but no
longer does so.

Please note: I did not expect to hear radical differences, especially on
my modest system. And I didn't. Further listening is needed. I also plan
to listen on a friend's high-end system. That will be an even more
interesting comparison.

I'm trying to maintain an open mind. While some skepticism is
warranted, I think the 24/88.2 download is truly higher resolution than
the CD at 16/44.1.

I wish HDtracks provided clear and accurate technical information about
the process for the 24/88.2 versions. I wish the CSO Resound production
team directly produced the tracks and artwork / liner notes. The idea
of scanning & ripping the physical CD and SACD products seems rather
tacky.

HDtracks download prices: 16/44.1: $11.98, 24/88.2: $17.98
CSO Store prices: CD: $19.99, SACD $23.99 (if in stock)

Haven't done more listening yet, but...

I noticed that the liner notes provided with the 24/88.2 HDtracks
download of the CSO/Haitink Bruckner #7 showed two catalog numbers.
CSOR 901 704 and CSOR 901 706. Its scan of the jewel case insert shows
CSOR 901 704. I stopped by the CSO's (reduced size) Store last night to
see if this was the CD or the SACD. It was the CD.

As HDtracks also offers the 16/44.1 standard CD download, I suppose
they simply used one scan for both versions. Since the liner notes PDF
file name ends in "9017046" this seems likely. Still it would have been
nice to see the SACD's catalog number on the scan of the insert.

This is indeed the heart of the matter. But it's not easy to conduct a
reliable test, especially single-handedly.

In addition to the CD and the 24/88.2 download, I've also made three
sets of digital files from the CD: WAV w/o compression, 320Kbps MP3 and
160Kbps MP3.

My system is "real world", NOT audiophile: a Sony AVR and PSB Image 2B
loudspeakers. (In my audiophile days I owned Quad ESL-57s.)

I've only done a limited amount of comparisons, but I think I can
reliably say that I CANNOT "easily discern the difference in quality of
audio" between the 24/88.2 download and the CD quality WAV file.

More later, especially after I've brought the Touch out to a friend's
house for listening with a high-end system.

interrupted music playback every 10 images or so, versus just about

My bottom line - the slideshow is only useful as a screen saver for

Thanks for your thoughts.

I hadn't run across the "Archos 5 Internet Tablet" before. The Touch is
much more what I want.

I knew that I'd need to connect to the net to do the initial firmware
installation and later updates. I did not expect its need to regularly
call home. I needed to "borrow" a neighbor's (weak) wireless
connection to get the clock working.

My primary location for the Touch does NOT currently have an internet
connection. I simply wanted to: Play ripped CDs (and some 24/88.2
downloads) from a small portable USB disk; Have a nice small control
display; and Connect to my existing audio system.

I too hoped/expected the Touch to be more of a stand-alone player. In my
experience it seems to need a fairly solid internet connection,
presumably to "call home". The connection is especially needed after a
loss of power, such as after being relocated. Unless accessing music
on/from a computer, there appears to be no need for squeeze software on

If I really wanted to use the slideshow (as it is now), I'd specially

I tried the slideshow feature last night from a WD "My Passport" USB

I found no way to point the Touch to a particular folder of pictures.
This is a VERY desirable capability if it's going to do a slideshow.

The pictures the Touch decided to show were fairly large. Almost every
time it went to a new picture, there was about a half-second hiccup in
the audio. I did NOT find a way to easily STOP the slideshow other
than the OFF button on the remote.

So much for slideshows.

The current display makes no sense to me either. While a more
technically accurate display would be nice, I suspect that after a few
minutes, I'd ignore a better version too.

I have now have a Touch,
the CSO Resound recording of the Bruckner 7th Symphony (conducted by
Haitink)
as a 16/44.1 CD and
as a 24/88.2 download from HDtracks.

I guess it's time to learn what difference(s) I can discern.

I think it's related. I had the same issue in my thread
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77523 about a missing
clock. After a power interruption, it seems that the Touch needs to
connect to the internet to get the clock going again. Otherwise in
"Off" or "Stopped" all I got was the Now Playing screen.

I was able to "borrow" a neighbor's wireless internet connection.
Initially the connection was quite weak - 5 to 8 percent according to
the Touch. No luck with the clock. Later on, the signal strength had
improved to 15 percent, and the clock screen-savers were again
functional.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Loss of clock - standalone, no internet

2010-04-17 Thread R Johnson

My SB Touch arrived at the office yesterday. It fired up nicely with a
wired connection to my router and downloaded the current firmware. I
inserted an 8GB SDHC card with music content. Worked very nicely.
Then I removed the ethernet connection and ran it standalone with an
analog connection to my office mini-system. I liked the nice digital
clock in "off" mode. It was automatically set to the right time! I
pulled the SD card to see what new cache files had been created. Then
put the SD card back.

I unplugged the Touch and brought it to my apartment, where I have no
internet service (apart from possibly sponging from a neighbor's
wireless network). Surprisingly, it took a little fooling around to
get the Touch going. But there's no more digital clock. I tried
selecting the various clock "screen-savers" for the "stopped" or "off"
cases. No joy. Sometime a "sample" clock would come up, but not
showing the correct time or date.

Very curious. User error or system/hardware design?

While I'm waiting for a Touch in order to listen to then, I'd love to

As mentioned several pages back, I subscribe to the Chicago Symphony
and am interested in the CSO Resound recordings available from HD
Tracks. I bought a few tracks for testing / comparison to CD. I've not
yet done the comparison due to lack of suitable hardware. I expect to
do the comparison with the new Squeezebox Touch in the near future.

Is your Passport one of the older models, or the newer models with two
partitions -- the main data area, and a small "CD" emulation storing
the backup software?

I have three older ones, and was/am worried about buying a new model

Here's my understanding (which may or may not be correct):
HDtracks is selling 24/88.2 downloads and is licensed to do so by the
CSO.
It seems HDtracks hires Puget Sound Studios (PSS) to convert from SACD
to PCM.
PSS takes a CSO Resound SACD and runs its DSD output through the EMM
gear to produce PCM.
If mortslim is correct, the EMM output is limited to 44.1 KHz (though
perhaps it is at 24 bits).
Then the PCM is upsampled to 88.2 KHz.

As a Chicago Symphony subscriber, I'm particularly interested in their
new recordings from concert performances as issued on the "CSO Resound"
label. These are available on SACD, CD and downloads. I've downloaded
one disc in 24/88.2 but haven't yet had the playback equipment to

Phil, thanks for confirmation that the Touch does 24/88.2.

I'm not really interested in 24/192, but I am interested in 24/88.2 -
where 88.2 is twice the 44.1 CD standard. Quite a few classical
downloads are available in 24/88.2 format.

The Touch specs say "Supports sampling rates up to 24 bit / 96 kHz". I
have seen specs for some devices which will do 96KHz, but NOT
88.2KHz

Does the Touch support 24/88.2?

I can live with a rough edge or two.
NTFS would be nice, but I don't have a problem with needing to buy an
extra portable drive, assuming they still come with FAT32 formatting.

I have three Western Digital "My Passport" drives. The new models come
with two partitions - the main one, plus a tiny one that "emulates" a CD
which is where their backup and other utility software is placed. Would
the Touch be able to deal with such a drive?

Thanks for the reply! I've been using the WDTV media player in
standalone mode quite successfully for HD video playback to my
projector. (The newer WDTV Live model added network capability.) The
WDTV will play music quite nicely (though undoubtedly not at audiophile
quality). However, I don't want to fire up a projector (or even a TV)
just to choose the music.

Hence, the SB Touch looks (looked?) like the perfect device for me.
Plug the Touch analog outputs into my AVR, and plug a USB drive into the
Touch. (I'd need to buy another drive for music files since my current
drives are NTFS for large HD video files.)

There seems to have been no work on 15192 since mid December. I'll be
very disappointed if it turns out that the Touch will not operate in
standalone mode.

I've been reading these discussions for a while. One of the items in
the buglist caught my attention: 15192 - "Unable to use Touch as a
standalone music player without network".

That's exactly what I'd like to do -- connect a USB hard drive (loaded
with content at another location) to a SB Touch, and then connect the
Touch to my AVR, using the Touch's screen to select the music.

Apart from needing a network connection for initial (or later) firmware
update, can/will the Touch operate that way? Or will I need to look
elsewhere?
