Not sure if there is one in Derbyshire but worth a Google (or alternative

To filter the list to just installed packages we pipe the output (that's

(^) with the letter i which is what dpkg -l outputs for installed
 packages.

What I do in such circumstances is to make sure I have an Ubuntu

For future reference is there a command to list installed packages?

I am in a dead area for user groups and would like to start one up. I
feel it would be a great help to have something physical where people
can go for help, support and encouragement. However whenever I mention
this and try to push for it I just get hit with a whole lot of negative
comments and lethargy. Nobody seems willing to support the idea at all
and I think it's a real shame. There seems to be a lot of laziness and
'let somebody else deal with it' attitude going on. I'm more than happy
to set one up but it's not easy when you don't have any proof that
anybody else will even turn up!

Hi,
Where are you? If we are close then I will help out!
always happy to meet like minded people ;)

We all need to remember at all times that when we talk on these forums,
chat rooms, web pages that we are representing the brand (whichever
floats your boat) and so should keep it positive, constructive and
supportive at all times. If any of us feels the need to drag the tone
down we really shouldn't be doing so in such a public way, keep it 1 on 1.

in short as long as we are aware of the risks, we are (hopefully) all

Hi,

I don't know where you are based, But my first port-of-call would be my
local computer recycling charity (jamies computers here in Southampton
[1]), they have a reasonably good selection of second hand laptops from
£75 - £150 depending on spec.
The last time I went in their I came away wishing I had a spare £100 for
a Sony Vaio laptop with dual-core, 500gb HDD 6gb RAM! Their stock does
seem to change frequently so have a look and then google the lappy for
faults, compatibility.

In my experience anything that is not too new will work (if you go for
the latest and greatest then you may have to wait / or build your own
divers etc).

As for the overheating issue I have found it common if the laptop is not
kept clean, by which I mean cleaning the fan heat-sink etc
under-the-hood, My Acer Aspire was suffering earlier in the week in the
hot weather, took it apart cleaned, replaced thermal paste on heat-sinkn
and all is great again. (note my Acer [80gb HDD dual core, 3gb ram] is
reaching EOL for Ubuntu I feel as Unity is using alot of umph, but I
should get another year to 18 mths outta it yet touch wood).

Hope this helps

Hi all,

Recently my wife's laptop has been experiencing some wireless issues -
slow performance, drop-outs and the like. We have numerous
wireless-enabled devices in the house and although we have the
occasional blip, none of the other devices seem to be affected to the
same extent, so I figured it was probably related to the laptop itself
and set about trying to figure out what the problem might be.

The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L450-188 running Ubuntu 12.04 with
the LTS backport kernel from Raring. The original wireless card in it
is a Realtek RTL8191SE. I tried replacing it with the Atheros-based
card from my son's EeePC, but although the card was apparently
recognised, and the ath5k module loaded, the card was disabled:

jtait@mothership:~$ rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: yes

rfkill unblock has no effect - no error, but the card remains hard
blocked. The wireless key (Fn-F8) simply toggles the soft block, and
the laptop has no hardware switch that I can see. There's a setting
in the BIOS that doesn't seem to have any effect. So I picked up an
Intel IWL4965AGN card on eBay for a couple of quid and tried that, but
the result was the same:

jtait@mothership:~$ rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: yes

I've tried countless solutions on ubuntuforums and so on. Is it
possible that Toshiba have decided to lock the laptop down to a
specific kind of wireless card?

Hi,

My Acer laptop (intel Wifi card) suffered wifi probs on 12.04, never did
get to the bottom of it, but upgrading to 13.04 solved it! I know this
is not necessarily a solution but if you can pin down what has changed
between the versions it might help (I have to admit once it 'fixed
itself' I stopped looking!) if it helps ill post the output of some
helpful commands below, and if you want any other info I would be happy
to provide it.

That does look good - not sure about the whole relocating to New Zealand

That struck me as a major plus point ;)

Hmm... there are a few interesting-looking Linux jobs on there... just

I suppose it depends what's available on the platform. Looking at
schools and colleges on the UK the vast majority run Windows XP or
7. That's not necessarily because of the technical staff who are
often perfectly capable of using and managing a GNU/Linux system or
set of systems, not is it saying that Windows, Mac or Linux (etc)
has one better than the other. I've been using Ubuntu and other
distros for about 3 1/2 years now, but I also realise that Windows
7 as a platform in schools and in the enterprise is pretty good at
what it does, and I have grown to like Windows 7 a lot since its
release in 2009. But, seen as schools and colleges have been using
Windows since the 90s, it is simply easier to keep with it. Let us
not forget one of the main reasons education likes to stick with
Windows - MS Office, which is I find much more reliable and user
friendly than alternatives such as LibreOffice or KOffice. If you're
in education trying to teach children to word process it simply
isn't faesable to try to explain the difference between proprietary
and open-source software etc and then to get them to make a choice.
Such a thing would be a massive logistical operation too -
demonstrations on a projector screen would be wrong for everyone who
chose the other system, and would have to be done again.

So, basically, the point I am trying to make is that until Ubuntu
(or any alternative) can offer something that will really persuade
school/college technical staff to switch, then they won't. Why
bother messing on making the switch to something if it's just as
good and will take a lot of valuable time away from busy technical
staff? It's simply nonsensical as far as I can see, speaking from my
own experience.

I haven't time for a long reply, but the problem is one of digital
inclusion. In the classroom only, it is OK, but many students need to
do work at home and cannot afford Office products (or they pirate them).

Please feel free to criticise me :)

[ubuntu-uk] Laptop locks up when lid re-opened

2013-05-30 Thread pete smout

Hi,

Im running 13-04, and I am *very* impressed apart from the slight issue,
of it locking up when the lid on the laptop is closed and re-opened.
I can find nothing that shouts at me in either the kern.log or x.log but
it has happened 3 times now!

It is worth noting that it does not happen every time the lid is closed
approx 1 in 5?

The system is fully updated as of 9.30 am today.

Symptoms:- open lid the 'screensaver' asks for password (as it should)
the desktop reappears but the mouse cursor will not move, the keyboard
is unresponsive (can't bring the dash up with 'super key' and ctrl-alt
F1 does not work in dropping to shell the only thing i can do is a 'hard
reset' hold the power button down for 10 sec (ish) and switch the
machine off!

System Details:- Ubuntu 13-04 (Unity), 3gb RAM, 160gb HDD, (6gb Swap
partition) INTEL graphics chip. (I also have XBMC GNOME installed but
not used when this problem presents itself!)

Anyone had a similar thing? or any ideas??

TIA

[ubuntu-uk] Strange thunderbird message

2013-05-30 Thread pete smout

Hi,

I use Ubuntu 13-04 and whenever I start t-bird it informs me that 'My
online accounts need attention' and there is no password for my Gmail
account.
Despite this it will 'logon' to Gmail and get any new messages that are
on there?

I have removed and re-instated the account in both t-bird and Online
Accounts with no success, and although it functions fine, getting the
error message is getting a bit boring now!!

Any thoughts

Hi Pete,

Do you have another machine that you can use when this happens? If you
do, then you might be able to SSH into your locked-up laptop to run some
more tests whilst the machine is actually locked up.

Grant.

Hi,

The laptop is an Acer Aspire 5720.

And Yes I do have access to another LINUX machine (not Ubutnu but
openSuse) but that is at home and I am not at the moment! if the problem
occurs when I am at home I will try ssh'ing into the laptop via suse, in
the mean time I just trying to find out what is happening as it is *not*
necessarily re-produceable 'on demand' only happens 1 in 5 times the lid
is closed (approx).

Hope this helps

Hi Tony

Yes I did look, all I found was how to patch the kernel to control the
CPU fan, as Acer 'forgot' to put it in BIOS and 'pathced Win VISTA'!

The lockup on close of lid was first noticed 2 days ago, and I put it
down to 'computers do misbehave!' but now it has occurred 3 or 4 times,
I have to put it down to a change of something? (I have been running
13-04 without issue for approx 3wks now). The only packages that have
been installed / removed in that time are Updates done via 'Software
Updater' in the GUI (yes I know you can use the terminal but I'm
basically a lazy person ;¬) ). I also know that raring is a
'development release' ie. not LTS and as such issues may well occur and
the point of posting here was to see if it was just me.. as it
appears to me to be Update related?!? *I may be wrong*

The suggestion from Grant to ssh into my lappy has been taken on board
and I have already arranged with a friend to use his machine to ssh into
mine *if* the issue pokes its head up before I get home!

Having googled around a bit I now believe that libkconfig4 is a KDE
library?! I don't know if this makes any difference, but google comes up
with compiz errors for that lib nothing on ubuntu-tweak!

any ideas

Pete

Hi again thought I'd let you have the complete line from the log!!

May 12 07:59:58 petes-lappy kernel: [ 4218.531873] ubuntu-tweak[12806]
general protection ip:aae138b3 sp:ea46 error:0 in
libkconfig4.so[aadfc000+1d000]

Hope it makes more sense to someone on here than it does to me!!

Pete

I think it's due to ubuntu-tweak having the ability to tweak compiz like
ccsm. There's a bug
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1041523) saying
that the kconfig backend is no longer supported, but it is still being
scanned for and this error comes up because of it.
Do you have a libkconfig.so (libkconfig4.so) at
/usr/lib/compizconfig/backends? Try deleting it or moving it to the
desktop and try again?

Hi,
Many thanks to A, That Fixed It, would never have worked that one out on
my own (just hope it doesn't screw KDE up, but if it does ill put the
lib back!)

Thanks again

Pete

That looks ok, I presume you have tried
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
to make sure everything else is up to date.

Other than that I don't know. I have not got a 12.10 to check it on.
Perhaps you should just upgrade to 13.04 (which is more stable that
12.10 in my experience anyway).

Maybe we can include a few user group fliers in there too, so people at
least have some way of getting help / support if they need it, maybe
invite him to join the lug, as for cd's maybe also include some Lubuntu
cd's , debian cd's or other cd's (maybe the lug can help put some
together), perhaps the shop owner could help by providing a pc + Linux,
but include a built in sd card writer and a raspberry pi image, so new
pi users can get help flashing the sd card.

Where are you based, maybe the lug can do some sort of Linux demo event
or something ast the shop, a bit like the Ubuntu hours but if we call
it GNU/Linux hour instead is less distro centric.

Taking on the big boys is a big job, helping the smaller shops expand
what they offer may be the way forward. and it helps local small shops
which the high street needs too.

If a small store offers something unique then it helps them generate new
customer interest.

Just a few thoughts.

Paul

Hi,

All are valid ideas, I admit to being Ubuntu centric, although Lubuntu
and Debian are also valid ideas, the guy concerned has taken 'my advise'
and d-loaded ubuntu and installed it to see for him self (he admitted to
'not having considered LINUX in at least 10 years'. I will pop in on
Saturday and see how he is getting on, and discuss the ideas mentioned
above, he was already aware of the Raspberry Pi project, and was doing
his own research on that before I spoke to him.

I am based in Southampton, the shop is in the Woolston area of the city
(Bridge Computers), which is not the 'richest' area of town and a
lo-cost solution I think would be of interest to his 'passing trade'.
I will certainly mention the Hants. LUG (I have found their support both
useful and fascinating).

Having said all of that he remains a business and as such is there to
make money, convincing him to supply things F.O.C might be harder than
we think! I felt that if I could convince *him* of the viability of
modern LINUX distros then half the battle would be won!

Maybe if other LINUX users in the area popped in and asked all the right
questions he might be persuaded that offering LINUX support could be his
USP and generate further business from outside of his local area! Maybe
even the South-Coast's goto place for LINUX. he might consider it a
small price to 'give things away'!

If anyone needs further info please contact me off list for directions etc.

Pete

A problem here is that there is no way any of the small shops can
compete on price with the big boys. And as we know, the big boys are
driven by Microsoft to an unfair degree.

All true but speaking personally I would rather pay a *few* quid more
for good knowledgeable service than save a fiver and get zero support!

But that's just me!

Four years or so ago, I bought a Dell netbook with Ubuntu
pre-installed. I went in to our local Dixons at that time asking about

Oddly enough linux hasn't been the biggest stumbling block. Anyway, if
anyone fancies a giggle the entire conversation with them is logged

blog page:

http://cliftonts.co.uk/cubuntu/?p=209

After reading this, it looks like you've had a fairly typical
experience: you've engaged outsourced frontline support for a low-tier
electronics manufacturer, and you've wandered outside the bounds of
their scripts. When dealing with a box shifter like Packard Bell, the
easiest way to get a result is conform as much as possible to their
requests and get the machine shipped off as soon as possible
(preferably covered by a home and contents or business asset policy).
If you can send it back with a relatively stock OS install, even
better.

And I'm afraid I agree with Liam here. If the data on the laptop (one
which you readily admit is junk) is of any material importance to
you or your business, get it backed up by whatever means necessary. I
personally use a mixture of rsnapshot (for my Ubuntu servers) and Time
Machine (for my Mac desktops/laptops) to give me a comprehensive layer
of recoverable backup data. If you're unable to invest in a hard disc
to drop data onto, have you considered a bunch of DVD-Rs? Or perhaps
you'd be able to temporarily borrow a USB HDD, or USB-SATA adapter and
a regular 2.5/3.5 drive, from a fellow IT type? Perhaps someone on
list has some spare kit they could punt your way?

Also, you're concerned about retaining your data to run your business
- how will you access the data if the laptop is gone? If you're
planning to use the Dell you mentioned, do you literally have 500GiB
used on your Packard Bell? If it's all in $HOME, do a du -sch ~ - if
the answer is free capacity of Dell computer, sorted! If not, see
borrowing tips above!

Re: the phone number, just search for Acer on saynoto0870.com - there
are several hits which match or closely match the number you mentioned
in your blog post.

I think you're unnecessarily making a rod for your own back here when
some creative thinking could help you. Rather than asking us to
giggle at a bunch of hapless support monkeys being forced outside of
the scope of their limited frontline support capabilities, ask the
community to help you out! :)

I'll be using a desktop for the duration the machine is away. I have
been looking at incremental backup solutions. What I'd like to do is
setup a system where it connects to an FTP server and only backs up the
data that has changed since last backup. Something I would trigger
rather than scheduled as I'm on mobile broadband and would need to do
backups whenever I was near a proper broadband connection. I've found
quite a few solutions which 'sort of' do this as I'd like but most don't
cut it and some simply refused to connect to my server. Do you have any
suggestions which may help?

Script it (simple google search will help if you dont know how!) ignore
the bit about cron- that will automate, just click the file to execute
when connected by b/b

Bad customer service is something which really winds me up and you have
hit the nail on the head there. This is the customer service equivalent
of painting by numbers. The collection has been arranged now and fingers
crossed they will fix it. I know that my laptops always take quite a
pounding but I can only think of one other which faired this badly, made
by a company called Hi-Grade. I really don't expect a machine to be
virging on unusable after only 8 months, regardless of how cheap it is.

I know what you mean but as with most things these days it's all run at
the 'lowest common denominator' which does mean some compromise on your
part :)

Hi,

I had a similar issue after upgrade to 12.04 (I know it's not your
problem!), to fix it I moved my .local folder from my home and put in
Documents. Then reboot, put things back 1 bit at a time, turned out it
was the icon folder causing the prob for me (dunno how?!).

Might be worth a try before complete re-install!!

Reagards

true and lets not forget the reasons Ubuntu is built upon Debian, proven

I normally fire up synaptic (synaptic package manager) and do a search
in the 'installed' section for 'linux-' and then remove what i don't
want. You could also search by version numbers. Make sure to pull out
the 'headers' and 'image' type packages - possibly 'image-extra' for
that version too. There are of course other ways of going about it. Just
as an added reminder: You can always check what version you're running
with the 'uname -a' command, or use'sudo update-grub2' to see a list of
all the installed kernel versions.

Hi,
I always use Ubuntu Tweak http://ubuntu-tweak.com/ or apt-get autoremove

Hi,
Gladly.. following the link Tyler gave me
http://www.tolaris.com/2009/04/14/enabling-1080p-video-on-the-shuttle-x27d-htpc/

I first using the 'gtf' command found the modelines for my desired
resoultion (1366x768) (copied pasted into text doc for later
ref.).Then I added my xrog.conf from my Lucid disc with the added line
virtual 1366x768 as shown in the link.
Then using xrandr I added newmode (xrandr --newmode Modeline) then
assigned it to VGA1 the output I am using, using xrandr again (xrandr
--addmode VGA1 resolutionrefresh from modeline, then I was able to
switch to the correct resolution from the 'Displays' menu in the top
right of the screen.

I then tried to make the changes permanent and failed dismally
completely screwed up and lost 'lightdm' (how I don't know but it
happened), recovered this unfortunate situation from the shell (couldn't
login graphically!) by sudo apt-get install gdm, set gdm as default
display manager when prompted. This gave me access to my GUI and I then
googled the problem with lightdm and came accross this command sudo
apt-get install --reinstall fmu lightdm this sorted the login issue
(back with lightdm).

Then having completely had enough I decided to put the 2 lines of script
in a text file (xrandr --addmode MODELINE)(xrandr --newmode
resolution_refreshrate) and make this file executable via the
properties menu in nautilus. You can view this at

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80216532/TVBashScript
(DISCLAIMER although I posted this to help point anyone in the right
direction the settings are for my system, and unlikely to work on
someone elses)

Now whenever I plug the laptop into the TV I have to run that script /
text file (sat on my desktop) and then select the resolution via the
displays menu (top right).

When I am in a better frame of mind I will look at editing xorg.conf and
making the changes automatic but for now I am just happy to be able to
watch my favourite TV series' with no ads in them!

Please note this is my experience and the lightdm issue may well have
been a coincidence (I cannot see how editing xorg.conf would bork
lightdm) but it was the only change made when rebooting the machine!

Hope this helps someone in the future, Thanks again to Tyler for his post.

Regards

Pete

Consider calling that script from ~/.xsessionrc, and you'll have it every
time you login.

Thanks for the idea hadn't thought of that will try it later!

Changes in xorg.conf are applied BEFORE lightdm starts. Changes you run
with xrandr in a desktop are applied AFTER you've logged in. That's how it
can bork it. But it was odd.

Arrrgh That explains it, thanks for info will bear it in mind for future

I wrote up my experience here:

http://www.tolaris.com/2009/04/14/enabling-1080p-video-on-the-shuttle-x27d-htpc/

However, this may not be your problem. For one, I no longer have this issue
on precise or quantal. The display defaulted to 1280x720 but I was able to
use the Displays application to set it to the higher resolution by
selecting it from the pull-down menu.

If it does apply to you, I hope the post helps. You can at least check your

  Hi,

I have been trying without success to get my ubuntu precise (upgraded from

still have lucid on a spare hdd so I can check settings).

The Problem:
TV (when connected via VGA (Out on laptop)- VGA (PC input)on TV)
On Lucid resolution was 1360 x 768 (16:9) 60hz. which worked perfectly well
(with virtually zero input from me).
On Precise i get 1024 x 768 (6:9) 60hz. Which means that I have an ugly
2inch gap down the left of the screen, and the bottom couple of inches
below the edge of the physical screen. (I hope this makes sense)

This confusing problem led me on a google-thon and I have got this far.

The Output from xandr in terminal with TV connected:

As you can see 1360 x 768 (or anything close is *not* an option) so I am
left trying to devise a way of getting it!

i have run gtf in terminal and get the following:

pete@petes-lappy:~$ gtf 1360 768 60

   # 1360x768 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 47.70 kHz; pclk: 84.72 MHz

-HSync +Vsync

Which gave me the idea of constructing a script to create the modeline
(which if necessary I can run every time I plug the TV in)

The script I devised:

#This line adds modeline from output of gtf command

# 1368x768 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 47.70 kHz; pclk: 85.86 MHz

#This line adds the mode as it is not default

xrandr --addmode VGA1 1368x768_60

#This line sets resolution on VGA1

xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1368x768_60

Returns the following error:

[ubuntu-uk] using laptop (11.10) thru tv (VGA)

2012-07-29 Thread pete smout

Hi all,

I'm using ubuntu 11.10 (12.04 won't install on it!) when I plug it into
my tv via VGA out on laptop to the VGA input on my tv the resolution is
all wrong and no matter what I try I can't put it right!

with the laptop screen turned off (fn F6 on my laptop) the desktop
appears on the tv, with a 2 inch (ish) gap down the left hand side of
the screen and the bottom of the desktop missing off the screen. I open
the system settings / displays to change resolution and the correct
resolution is not listed.

On Lucid I had to boot the laptop whilst plugged into the TV the first
time to get it to 'register' the tv's settings so I tried the same on
11.10 with no joy!

I have copied the xorg.conf file from lucid into 11.10 (there was not
one there already) this has made no difference has xorg been replaced?

the only resolution that shows the whole desktop on the tv is 800*600
not ideal on a HD tv (wide screen) this is not wide screen, old 4.3 format

Any one got any ideas?

But his mouse is not recognised on the live cd.

the machine is a sony viao VGC-LV1S pc (all in the screen) with an
internal sensor for a wireless keyboard and mouse (not USB) and the
keyboard works fine but not the mouse.

from the live cd I have tried lsusb to see if the mouse appears but it
does not (nor does the keyboard which is what makes me think it isn't USB)

After that I am out of ideas any suggestions?

Without doing any research my first thought is: is bluetooth turned
on? I have a suspicion the keyboard and mouse may well be bluetooth
peripherals. If so you will also have to set them up (pair them) as
devices within Ubuntu.

Jonathon

Ignore everything about bluetooth. It's not that.

Have you tried to re-pair the keyboard and mouse by using the CONNECT
button on the back of the machine and on each device? I take it that
the mouse is turned on and the batteries aren't dead?

Jonathon

Hi,
Yes the batteries are ok mouse is switched on (even switched off and on
again!) on win7 the keyboard and mouse work fine and on Ubuntu the
keyboard works but not the mouse? I have never come across this before
and having been singing Ubuntu's praises for about three years and how
everything just works this is a bit embarrassing!

Not sure if the mouse is bluetooth or Infra-red or what! but if the
keyboard works why doesn't the mouse?

Grep for it in dmesg, you should at least be able to get a

[ubuntu-uk] Lucid Update Manager not informing Me of LTS upgrade

2012-05-04 Thread Pete Smout

Hi,
I have 1 remaining machine to upgrade to 12.04 (my main desktop /
server) and it is running 10.04 lucid (fully updated as of now), yet the
graphical update manager is not informing me that an upgrade is possible
even though I have it set to show LTS versions only.

If I set it to 'normal releases' it shows 10.10 as available but no
mention of the 11's or the new LTS. When switched back to show LTS
versions only it still shows 10.10 as being available?

Is this normal?

Please note if I wish I can do a dist upgrade via teminal I know but
less knowledgeable(?!?) users who are relatively new to the LINUX world
may be unaware / scared of this way of doing it.

Kind regards

[ubuntu-uk] My 12.04 experience

Hi,
Just thought I'd feedback my 12.04 experiences so far.

Ubuntu will not install on any of the 3 machines tried on so far! Gets
as far as asking for user name / psswd and then says error! tried 2
different downloads so I think its the system not the .iso image

Xubuntu 12.04 (Beta 2) installs first time no trouble at all and
although I haven't tested everything yet my first impressions are 'Wow
why would anybody use Unity on a PC or Laptop!'

I hope this situation is not the same for first time installers as if it
was my first experience I would probably still be a Windoze user!

Still unsure weather or not to upgrade my main machine from 10.04 as I
personally cannot see the benefit of unity on a PC (and two years on I
have Lucid set just how I want it!)

Pete,

Hi bugs like that are really important to report. There are lots of
things it could be that cause the system to die but without your
machines to try it out on nobody will know for sure.

Hi,

At this late stage of Beta testing (release only about 1 week away) I
would expect my fairly standard machines to be ok, machine specs are

PC - Dual core (AMD) 3gb ram
Lappy - Dual core (intel) 2gb ram
Old PC - Pentium 4, 1.5gb ram

the makes of the motherboards are unmemorable / unremarkable

With the exception of the 'Old PC' (which may be too old now , although
I doubt it, this is Linux not windoze) surely IT SHOULD JUST WORK! If it
was still Alpha I would of course report the bug(s) but it is too late
now to effect the release (I believe).

I will of course try when the release is official (on 29th I think) but
surely these machine specs are not so new as no-one else in the world
has them, if the machines were brand new core i7's or the latest
'gadget' machines I may well expect a few issues, but I am neither
wealthy enough, or that bothered by the 'lack of performance' of my
aging hardware to worry about 'keeping up with the metaphorical Jones's'.

Does it run OK from the live-CD? It's worth trying this. You would not
be asked for user name/password until it was ready to install on the
host machine, and then it would only stop with some sort of message that
would tell you what is wrong - not just 'error' - are you saying it
hangs after you have given it a username and password to use in the new
installation? I just wonder if the existing partitioning or something is
getting in the way?

I've been running it on my desktop since Alpha 1 and I'm delighted with
it. Unity is fantastic on a desktop once you are used to it. My wife
still has 10.04 on her machine and I really find it hard going when I
have to use it. I've now installed 12.04 on my netbook and again am
delighted with it. I will be very surprised if there isn't something
simple getting in the way of your install.

I really hope we can help you to sort it. Can you get into the
commandline and tell anything from there while you are trying to install?

Regards, Barry.

Hi,

Thanks for the offers of help, but I am now resigned to waiting a week
or two for the 'official release' and I am sure Unity has improved since
my last encounter (11.04) and although I am not writing it off as a UI
(or DE) it will have to be fantastic to fully convert me.

It does seem strange that Xubuntu installs first time with no errors
(did have a crash report earlier, but didn't effect me, must have been a
background thing) where as the Ubuntu Beta 2 with basically the same
installer did not.

For info it was not the daily build as I have tried these before with no
success. Nor did I try the live desktop as I have enough machines / hard
drives to just install and play around with it so I went straight for
the install as I have many times before.

I do as a matter of course check the MD5sum (as K3b displays it when
loading the .iso image and it only takes 2 mins)

If in a week or so when I get around to trying it again I still have
issues I will pay more attention to the error message and (after
googleing) I shall ask the many helpful readers of this list for help!

At the moment, yes. When Unity first came out I was disappointed to

gnu/linux. Things are moving though.

I'm prepared to wait - Unity is perfectly usable as is - and that

You should have a specific Xorg driver for your onboard Intel

Run the following command to find out your graphics chip:
   lspci

Look for the line that has VGA on it.

If it does indeed say something about an Intel chip, then make
sure
you have the following package installed:
   xserver-xorg-video-intel

Once that's installed, remove the xorg.conf file and restart X.

   sudo service lightdm restart

Please note that last time it happened was with clementine

 Hi Pete,

That is interesting, about your CPU security extensions, but I do
not
believe it is related to this.

Your original post showed that your xorg.conf file was using
fbdev as
the graphics driver - this *should* work on most machines and so
it is
useful as a fall back if all else fails. The fbdev driver means
that

Essentially all I suggested was that you ensure you have the correct
xorg driver available (which you do) and you (re)move the xorg.conf
file so that xorg regenerates it (or creates on on-the-fly) when you
 reboot... which you've done.

It is still entirely possible that xorg is still using fbdev, so you
may want to re-instate your xorg.conf file but edit the fbdev
entry
 to say intel instead.

Thanks trying that, so far so good no issues to report!

There seems to be no pattern to what programs I am using, everything
from open office to clementine to smplayer or thunderbird, not at
any certain time of day or day of the week, or even weather using
the inbuilt screen or external one.

My understanding (admittedly limited) is that xorg is the bit that
works the display (screen). Has anyone else come across this?

For reference the laptop specs are:

Acer Aspire 5720
Intel T5250 Dual core processor
Ram 2.0 gb
Internal graphics (intel)
Internal sound (intel)

Thanks in advance for any ideas

Regards

Pete

just for reference my xorg.conf:

Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
Driver fbdev
EndSection

Might want to look into that bit.

You should have a specific Xorg driver for your onboard Intel
graphics chip.

Run the following command to find out your graphics chip:
  lspci

Look for the line that has VGA on it.

If it does indeed say something about an Intel chip, then make sure you
have the following package installed:
  xserver-xorg-video-intel

(That package deals with all i8xx and i9xx chips)

Once that's installed, remove the xorg.conf file and restart X.

You can restart X by going to a terminal (NOT a terminal window...
press CTRL+ALT+F2 and log in) and then run:
  sudo service lightdm restart

(Or just reboot... up to you.)

Grant.

Hi Grant,

Thanks for your reply, the lspci command produces (relevant lines only I
hope)

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Synaptic shows xserver-xorg-video-intel is installed (reinstalled for
good measure) moved the xorg.conf file to my documents folder and
rebooted, opened t-bird to reply to you and the machine 'greyed out' for
approx 20 secs with gkrellm showing xorg as using 100% CPU! Please note
that last time it happened was with clementine running, when playback
stopped mid song so I cannot blame t-bird!

As an aside but possibly related?! when I open a tty shell (ctrl-alt-f1)
log in it tells me 'Your CPU appears to be lacking expected security
protections. Please check your BIOS settings, for more information
please run /usr/bin/check-bios-nx --verbose which produces

smouty@smouty-laptop:~$ /usr/bin/check-bios-nx --verbose
This CPU is family 6, model 15, and has NX capabilities but is unable to
use these protective features because the BIOS is configured to disable
the capability. Please enable this in your BIOS. For more details, see:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Security/CPUFeatures

I am unable to find any related settings in BIOS, if this is unrelated
to my original question please ignore it and I will do further research

Pete

[ubuntu-uk] Xorg high CPU usage

After moving to Mint, I have to say I'm pleased with it. It has all the ease

interface than Unity.

That said, I can't bring myself to switch my main desktop PC away from Ubuntu…

Subject: [ubuntu-uk] Heres an idea (Was Unity is not working)

Hi,

FWIW I have tried Unity and Xfce, KDE, GNOME 3, and have found all
wanting in some regards, but to say Unity is being forced upon us is
very wide of the mark. We all have a choice we can stay with Lucid
(GNOME 2) until support expires (2015 I think but not sure) or we can
install Xbuntu, Kubuntu without being 'unfaithful' to the Ubuntu
project, or we can go over to Mint or Arios both of which are
derivatives of Ubuntu (I'm sure there are others).

Those of us slightly more experimental can install such window managers
/ docks as AWN, Cario Doc, Docky, and others and completely change the
look and feel of the graphical interface.

Choice is everywhere!

I have not tried precise as I have been unable to successfully install
it on either my desktop or laptop, but I am sure the Unity graphical
interface will have progressed from 11-10 in much the same way as our
beloved Gnome 2 developed from my 'joining' Ubuntu (8-10) to 10-04 lucid!

My point I suppose is if you don't like it don't use it or change it
moaning achieves nothing.

Pete

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Recommendations for a printer?

2012-01-25 Thread Pete Smout

snip

Epson, the last time I looked, needed a different driver for each
printer I had to make a directory deep in the spooler hierarchy to
get the driver to install for the cheap all-in-one I was testing.
There were also separate drivers for scanning and so on.

I have a Epson dx4800 all-in-one inkjet printer that just works when
plugged into 10-04 or 11-10 only thing I needed was xsane? i think it's
called to get scanner to work. printer about £50 inks £12 a set!

Canon - many Pixma models do work, but again, there are lots of
different drivers for different model ranges. It's not quite one per
model but there were quite a few to choose from.

I've tried a couple of Kodaks and they worked well too, once the
specific driver was installed - which was a battle as Kodak don't make
them readily available. Kodak have some of the cheapest ink around, I
believe.

I tried updating today and there seems to be some package breakage.

I installed perfectly from the Alpha 1 ISO a few weeks ago. I'd try
that, and complete the install before trying to update.

Hi,
Issue solved downloaded the alpha 1 iso and updated after install is it
worth raising a bug report for the issue stated above? If this is the
new install procedure, my lap top is not that outta the ordinary
(intel2.4ghz dual core, 2gb ram) it should just work!

If I raise a bug report I have no debug info to back it up, so other
than the info provided here, I cannot back it up with error reports or
anything like that, but I feel this issue needs to go up the line, hence
the question 'has anyone else' had this problem to shed more light and
be able to provide more info on the problem to pool the reports, and
give more ammunition to the bug report.
