The only free Word viewer from Microsoft is Word Viewer 97, which is
not faithful in it's reproduction of .doc from Office 2003. Microsoft
does not make backwards-compatable changes to Office, to force users
to upgrade. Or have you a newer version? If so, from where did you get
it?

Thanks.

This is not completely correct.

Linux versions of openoffice doesn't have a quickstarter (official or not). So
some indepedent developers have created it.

Linux quickstarters for openoffice are separate programs, that will work with
both vanilla openoffice and distribution modified ones.

They are sometimes installed by default with the distro, and other times need
to be installed separated. Most distros will "ship" (in the default distro or
in repos) at least two quickstartes, one for kde and one for gnome.

If you install one or more English dictionaries (there are at least two: UK
and US which are very different) and tell OpenOffice to use one of them as
the default language then it will spell check in that language. The same is
true of French or Italian or ... It has nothing to do with the language of
the OS. You can create a "template" for each language and select the
appropriate one for each new document.

You can also write multi-lingual documents by setting up "styles" for each
language. OpenOffice will spellcheck each paragraph in its own language. of
course, you need the relevant dictionaries installed

A few differences between US and UK English:
UK US
Aluminium Aluminum
ColourColor
Defence Defense
Licence License (when used as a noun.UK uses
"license" when it's a verb)
Organisation Organization
Theatre Theater

Javier, your information is a bit old. The gtk quickstarter module (similar
to windows one) was included in 2.1 and it works in gtk interfaces. (Gnome,
Xfce...). You can look in EIS after cws-s named gtkquickstart*

2007-01-12 Thread Guy Voets

2007/1/10, Michael <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Hello,
I have what I hope is an easy question to my problem.

In Open Office 2.0 Calc I would like to place numbers in a cell.
Example: =999+333
When I hit the enter button the total is calculated and I go down one row.
The problem: I would like to hit the enter key and go to the right.but
when I change it's direction in the customize window I get: no
calculation and the cell to the right is highlighted in red with the
letter of the column along with the row number.
If I use the right arrow key I get the same as above.
So, I would like to be able to enter numbers in one cell, hit enter or
right arrow key and have the calculation take place and to have moved to
the right.
I go hope you can help.
Thank you,

can't you use the TAB key instead of ENTER?
Works for me on 2.1, but maybe you use the numeric pad with the ENTER key
there?

Dear Frank,

You have two options:
1. After you create or edit a document in OOo you can save it in MS Office
format and you can distribute it to anyone who uses MS Office. Then they'll
be able to open, read, and edit it.

2. to uninstall OOo, and if your operating system is any Windows, go to

[users] die Anwendung von OpenOffice.org

2007-01-12 Thread Max Malycha

german version below!

Hi,

found your message in the OO-forum just in time. There are two
remarkable items.

  1. You sent your mail in the english forum in german, there are some
people who don't like that. They will get angy ;-) Please post in
english next time or use the german language forum.
  2. Your problem: Using copy and paste the adresses in your function
are also copied, but changed during insert.
 Example: you take a function from a1, e. g.
 =sum(a2:a5;a7)
and insert it in b1. This will be like
 =sum(b2:b5;b7).
But if there is text in b7 OO wil get angry and write #Wert!. I
think #Name! ist a remark on a bad written function. Perhaps there
is a writing error in your function?

greetings

Max

Hallo,

habe eben Deine Mail in der OO-Liste gesehen. Dazu gibt es zwei Dinge.

Mal schauen, ob Du ggf.
 einen Tippfehler drin hast!

Grüße

Max

Dear Rachel

To quote another volunteer, Andy Pepperdine <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
on this list:

Here's a brief guide:
Languages in OpenOffice

To obtain the relevant dictionaries, go to
File -> Wizards -> Install new dictionaries
and download the ones you want.

To set the default language for your installation, go to
Tools -> Options -> Language Settings / Languages
and set the default for all your documents. If there is a
dictionary for your selection, there will be a tick mark against it.

It is important to remember that language is an attribute of the text
of a document, and can be set differently in different parts of
the same document. This allows foreign language quotes to be separately
checked against the appropriate dictionary.

To set the default for a document that is different from the
default setting for all other documents, when you have opened
the document (or started a new one) go to the Default style
and change it there. F11 (or Format -> Styles and Formatting) brings up
the style list. Right click on Default (or the root style for your document)
go to Modify -> Font tab where you can set the language for this style
and will be carried down to other styles derived from it unless otherwise
changed.

To change the language for a piece of text, highlight the text and go to
Format -> Character -> Font tab (or right click -> Character -> Font)
where you can set the language for just that portion of text.

If you set up your styles for a language in an empty document and then
save it as a template (File -> Templates -> Save), then you can select the
appropriate one to start a new document with File -> New -> Templates and
Documents

I have both wd97vwr32.exe and wdviewer.exe. I have wd97vwr32 for older
systems that won't run wdviewer. Both came from the MS web site. IIRC,
wd97vwr will run in wine on Linux, but wdviewer won't.

[users] [moderated] general input/output error?

2007-01-12 Thread Katy Kinard

OpenOffice.org version other on MacOSX.
In area Database, general input/output error?

Hey,

I'm working in an excel document (database), and all I've done is
highlight one row, like I've done several times before...
But now it won't let me save the document. And it freezes up, and I have
to manually quit X11 each time I try this. So I've tried closing it out,
bringing it back up, making one change (highlighting one row) and it
won't ever save it.. only says "general input/output error."

Can you please help me? What should I do differently?

[users] installation on a network using Citrix servers with load balancing between 2 Citrix machines

2007-01-12 Thread Jouant Michel
Hello,

I use openoffice on my notebook without problem. Not always but
sometimes mainly to test possibilities.

In our company we want to use openoffice for all users but 75% of users
are linked through a network, managed by 2 Citrix servers configured in
load balancing. The objective is to save money.

My question is:

Is it possible to install openoffice taking account this configuration?

In fact openoffice must be shared between the different users.

Our technical support says that Citrix recognize only MSoffice

Is it true or not true?

If it is not true, the implementation requires special parameters.
or.??

Can you let me know some information about this point?

Robert,

Which version of OOo are you using? In version if you click on Format >
Bullets and numbering you get 6 tabs:
- Bullets (8 predefined options)
- numbering type (8 predefined options)
- Outline (8 predefined options)
- Graphichs (40+ predefined options)
and finally two tabs (Position and Options) that allow a full customization
of the bullet and numbering style as well as the placement and paragraph
attributes of the bulleted or numbered list.

To change the bullet type for example, go to options, click on level 1,
select bullet in the first drop down list, then click on the button with
three dots and select the bullet type you want (switch to the OpenOffice
font type for a wide choice of bullet points). Adjust then the indentation
and spacing to text in the position tab and click Ok.
If you intend to re-use the same bullet often, you may want to consider to
create a style for it.

Cheers,

Michele

I can take number 1.

Yes, it's quite easy. I'll assume you are talking about Writer. First, turn on
the header (and you are not using styles, although you really should be).
Insert -> Header -> Default . If it's already on, don't do this step as it
will turn off the headers. Put the cursor in the header, and hit tab twice,
or if the number will be the only thing in the header, click on the right
justify button. Now Insert -> Fields -> Page Number.

As for 2, I don't have that problem, so I can't help you. I suspect it is
because you are trying to mix numbering methods, something I learned a while
ago not to do.

When you installed OpenOffice did you install it only for you or for "all
users"? And are you logged into Windows as the same user as when you
installed it?

Do you have any other version(s) of OpenOffice installed?

You could try quitting all OpenOffice programs and renaming the file
"C:\Documents and Settings\Harold\Application
Data\OpenOffice.org2\user\registry\data\org\openoffice\setup.xcu" before
starting OpenOffice. That file should get re-created. Before renaming the
file, make sure the Quickstarter isn't running - look in the System Tray; if
there's a grey icon with flying birds pictured, *right* click on it and
choose Exit; if there's no icon then the Quickstarter isn't running so
you're OK.

Let us know how you get on.

OpenOffice? Please go to Help>About and tell us the version number *below*
the headline.

When you receive the excel document - I assume you mean by e-mail -
*exactly* what do you do? Which program are you using for e-mail?

Why do you think this has something to do with OpenOffice?

In area Database, general input/output error?

Hey,

I'm working in an excel document (database), and all I've done is
highlight one row, like I've done several times before...
But now it won't let me save the document. And it freezes up, and I have
to manually quit X11 each time I try this. So I've tried closing it out,
bringing it back up, making one change (highlighting one row) and it
won't ever save it.. only says "general input/output error."

Can you please help me? What should I do differently?

-Katy

Katy,

I'm not on a Mac myself but I think you can go to
http://documentation.openoffice.org/HOW_TO/misc/Troubleshooting_guide.html
and click the link for "General error or General input/output error".
That should help you out. The Mac is considered UNIX-based in these
instructions.

Re: [users] Mail merge problem

2007-01-12 Thread Albert Martinez
If you have many on mail list, it is better to send to one address and
cc: rest of list then message stays small and mail server will spin out
the copies for you. Mail servers have controls on size of message and
the 1st might have been 7k but the rest of the list could be too large
for your server to process. Of course, I am assuming you have done this
before and speak from experience and are not trying to check if open
office can do some of your arcane desires ;-) .

Hi there,
I'm experiencing some problems trying to merge and send a letter as an
email with an attachment. I get an error from the mail server stating
that the message size is to big. This is a bit strange since the file
I'm attaching is about 7K in size. The error pointed to is in
mailmerge.py and smtplib.py.

One mail is sent successfully but the rest of them is cancelled due to
this error. I have followed the documentation on using mail merge but
this happens all the time.

Has anyone else experienced this? And have anyone found a solution?

My setup is:
Win XP
OO 2.1
Thunderbird (the addresses is retrieved from a list in the address book.)

Steps to reproduce:
1) Create a list of mail recipients in Thunderbird.
2) Follow the mail merge wizard using email as the output.
3) Setup mail server and account info through Tools-Options-Writer...
4) Try sending the letter as an attachment/pdf to the recipients.

Hope someone is able to help me with this.

[users] Just checking - re Dict.?

2007-01-12 Thread James Elliott
Whenever I upgrade to the latest version of OOo I install the Australian
Dictionary. In the interests of doing this quickly, and because I have
added many words to my Australian Dictionary over the years and do not want
to start off with a fresh copy, this is the way I do it (in Windows XP) ...

Once the new version of OOo is installed, I copy my existing dictionary list
file and the three *.au files into the ... /share/dict/ooo folder, answering
"yes" when it asks if I want to over-write the dictionary.lst file.

I then fire up OOo and go into Tools/Options/Language settings, to set my
spell checker and locale to "Australian"

MY QUESTION
Is this the best way to do it?

I am always concerned that one day a new version of dictionary.lst, or other
files in the ooo folder, will change and I will be copying old files over
new formats.

A little worry only, but I would appreciate your comments.

Many thanks, James

I use OOo for printing my envelopes all the time, either individually or as

When are you going to get it right? From the beginning of open office
til now and currently using Suse 10.2 download distro with packaged open
office installed. Setting up envelope will not display
#10 envelope size correctly on screen nor will it put address and
adressee in a position that will print correctly on #10 envelope.
Haven't tried any other sizes.
Up to this note I've always kept WindozeXP around and installed for
doing envelopes!!! I also find putting automated numbering of pages on
multi-page documents to be a nightmare also. Why can't you make it as
easy as Windoze? Thanks if you can make my world easier. I thought the
purpose of computers and operating systems with their programs was to
make life easier...

You do not need a printer to see that even on screen it puts a #10
envelope on the bottom of a page that is much larger than the envelope
dimensions and no amount of tweaking of the settings move the input
addressee and sender into a position on that sheet to print on the
envelope. Had you a printer and you tried to print it only the sender
information is printed on the envelope. Does anyone there care about
this enough to make it work? Why all the trouble to provide an
alternative that doesn't work and reply to requests as below?

Dan...
Are you affiliated with Sun or open office? Or a concerned volunteer
helping out?

Does anyone test the code for complete functionality before programs are
shipped/incorporated with the OS? Something I think M$ does.

>How do you place numbers on pages?

I don't use openoffice because it's impossibly hard to remember how to
and time consuming. Menus and options are just too much like a jigsaw
puzzle without documentaion help. Much easier to install windows and
use word perfect.
> Do you use a header or footer to put them in?
(footer -center- page of pages) You mean this information now makes it
possible to answer a question?

Sounds like a programmer's response. "show us the code you've written
attempting to access use of your printer through our operating system
and if you're close we'll acknowledge and maybe help you..."
You mean you can/will not tell me all the options unless I specify
exactly where I place my numbers on the page?
Am I communicating with a machine or person? Do you mean you
cannot/willnot write a help file to help me do this that I might access
info. for all options regarding page numbering and spare you and me this
impossible quest of who is more ignorant here?
If it exists already why can't I find it and why wasn't I referred to it?
When is openoffice going to be as good as wordperfect or even better for
doing the simple stuff like printing envelopes and page numbering?

This is some kind of test to see what people will put up with to avoid
the M$ grip? The grip is getting tighter because nothing else does it
any better!?!

Why doesn't OO look at how Word Perfect does it and do it very similar?
Sheeesh you guys act like your reinventing the wheel and you dare not
stray too far from command line concept.
How does open office feel like they are furthering the cause of
providing a working alternative to Windows based productivity if it
takes longer and more learning resources to accomplish the same task?
Doesn't competition mean doing it better, faster, easier, and more
reliably? Does open office ever plan to just make it easier?

Re: [users] internet security - anti-virus etc.

2007-01-12 Thread James Elliott
I have been using AVG for years on my own computers and put it on customer
computers when:

1.  they do not have an anti-virus;
2.  their commercial antivirus is about to expire;
3. when they have Norton and Norton is the probable cause of their
problems.

We do sell VET for those who need to purchase their software for accounting,
policy, or legal reasons, but otherwise recommend AVG.

The trouble with Norton and some of the others is that they are trying to
corner the WHOLE market: anti-virus; spyware; adware; malware; hacker
intrusions; data mining; and so on. The result is such a complex piece of
software that it ends up stopping you from doing what you want to do on and
with your computer. I prefer separate anti-virus, spyware, and firewall
software and also use a hardware firewall.

I recommend AVG with regard to anti-virus, and use Spybot and Ad-aware for
malware.

Kind regards, James

Since a computer crash a couple of year ago (not necessarily virus
related)
I've been using a free version of AVG which seems very satisfactory. It
was
put on by the "expert" who cleaned my PC and upgraded it from Windows 98
to
XP. I had Norton Professional Security 2004 previously which I found
often

interfered with the installation of new software. I haven't had the same
problems with AVG.

An update to version 7.5 has just been issued.

Good Luck,

I should like advice on this.

My Norton agreement has expired but before that it became "aggressive" so
I had to turn it off before receiving e-mails!!

Does Open Office offer this service, or can you recommend one?

June-Anne Hare

Norton anti-virus software IS a virus. It runs processes in the
background
without your permission. It misses a LARGE number of problems that AVG
gets
everytime. Norton frequently takes control of the computer without giving
a

reason.

Start OpenOffice.org. Using the mouse, click File. This opens a

containing all of the applications contained in OOo. The top item in
this menu is Text Document. Click it. An untitled empty document is
created with the cursor flashing in the upper left corner. Type your
letter.
The phone company punch card refers to the bills sent out by AT&T
back in the 1950's and 1960's. They contained a card with holes
punched in them that you were suppose to bring to their office to pay
your bill or send with your payment through the mail.

[users] tech support questions

2007-01-12 Thread ben bloch
Hi, I'm using version 2.0, Writers. Could you please help me with:

1.I can't find the PDF export button on any toolbars, and I want to send your
user's manual to my desktop so I can look at it offline. How is this possible?

  2. During printing, when I select a page range, openoffice always ends up
printing whatever was in the range PLUS all the page numbers after the last
indicated page. For instance on a 10 page document, if I said I wanted 1-3, 6,
8 printed, it would print 1-3, 6, 8 and also pages 9 and 10. How do I
troubleshoot this?

  3. My spellcheck seems not to be installed. How do I get it working/configure
my openoffice to have a spellcheck?

If these questions require more help, could you please direct me to ANY phone
support line available for openoffice? Thank you very much for your help,

Re: [users] tech support questions

2007-01-12 Thread James Mckenzie
Ben:

I would like to clarify that you have written to a mailing list, staffed with
volunteers, not a Help Desk. OpenOffice.org is a part of the OpenSource
movement.

Now to your questions:

First, Export as PDF is found under the File menu.
Second, you need to open an issue for the problem with extra pages, or there
may already be one. Go to www.openoffice.org and click on the support menu
item. You will have to subscribe in order to submit an issue. Your
information will only be used to send messages to you about the particular
issue you filed.
Third, Are you speaking about autocorrect or automatic misspelled word
detection?

Lastly, because this is a volunteer effort there is no phone support. However,
if you are using one of the Sun supported platforms you can purchase StarOffice
for $89 per year and get telephone support. The price quoted is subject to
change and was based upon the last time I looked at the StarOffice product page
at Sun.

OOo 2.1 should run on Windows ME. It will probably run slower
because it has more features. For that matter, you should be able to
open *.doc and *.xls files with OOo 1.1.4 also. I did when I had it

2007-01-12 Thread rob
Hi

Note (1) that the .ODF (open) format that is normally used by OpenOffice
cannot be read by MS Word. However the .doc files produced by MS Word or
WordPad can be read by OpenOffice.
Note (2) that some complex formatting may not be recognised by OpenOffice.
These formatting discrepancies can be caused by the fact that Microsoft has
undocumented features or because the specific feature is copyrighted by
Microsoft so OpenOffice cannot use it.

Procedure
1. Decide on the file type you wish to send. If the recipient needs to edit
the document then send a Word or Excel document. If the recipient only needs
to read the document then send a PDF (Adobe Acrobat) document.

2. Decide if you need to e-mail the document. If you need to e-mail it then
use File>Send> E-mail as Microsoft word or File>send> E-mail as PDF. If you
need to pass the document to the user on a disc, or USB drive or over a
network then use File>Save As> and choose the appropriate file format and
disc.

Thanks

At the bottom, to the left, you see somenthing like Page 1/2. Double

Please be more specific in describing your problem. You say the
page numbering suddenly stopped. Apparently you had page numbers on
your pages before. What do you have now?
I will take one guess as to what happened. If this is not the
cause, then please write again with more details.
Click View at the top to open its menu. Does Field Names have a
check (tick) in front of it? If so, click Field Names to remove it.
The page numbers should appear again.
It is important to explain what is happening. If what I described
was the problem, a statement that the page numbers were suddenly
being replaced by a name would have been very helpful.

RE: [users] [moderated] YOU MUST GIVE A SUMMARY HERE

2007-01-12 Thread rob
Hi Roger

We seem to be having some problems with over-zealous virus checkers at
present.

Procedure
1 Disconnect your computer from the web (either remove your LAN cable or
disconnect from your dial-up).
2. Disable your anti-virus and firewall software
3. Install OpenOffice
4. Enable your anti-virus and firewall
5. Reconnect to the web
Once the install is completed and you have time to spare on the machine
please run a complete virus scan of your computer to verify that you are not
currently infected.

I hope that this will enable you to install open office.

Thanks

Rob

I downloaded openoffice.org a few days ago, as I did about 18 months ago.
Both times after the download had completed I was told that it was Infected,
and I was told this by the source that I downloaded it from (you fine
people). I am not sure what more to tell you, but there appears to be
something not working quite as it is suposed to work.

Out of my Care & Concern, I felt it necessary to inform you of this.

Perhaps you need to rename this desktop icon
to "OOo_2_1_0_Win32Intel_install_en-US.exe" (Replace the last
underline "_" with a period "." Then try double clicking the icon.

OOo 2.1 has what is called the Navigator. Use the F5 key to open
the Navigator. The page number is in a box at the top. Change the
number to 350, and it will show up on the screen.

It would be helpful if we know what operating system you are
using. By mentioning *.bin files, it might be Linux. We need to know
for sure. How much memory does your computer have? What is your
processor speed? (CPU speed) Do you have the AutoRecovery set in
Tools > Options > Load/Save > General? If so, how many minutes between
saves?

[users] Seem to have lost OO

2007-01-12 Thread BBroad
I have Mac OS 10.4.8 and installed X11 first.  Yesterday I had the .dmg on
my desktop and successfully opened the application, played a bit, and closed
it.  I did not move it to my applications folder.

Today I can find no trace of the .dmg drive icon or the application.  Lots of
Library files.  I've checked the Trash, but I'm not sure what it was named.

Feeling like an idiot, I hope someone can help me.  I sure don't want to take
the time to download it all a second time.

Also, I opened and tried to print a tutorial .pdf, but it came out with words
all over the place and not making sense.

Incorrect. There is a section of compiled OpenOffice.org code that triggers,
falsely,
Norton/Symatec AntiVirus. According to Norton, this is our problem, not theirs.

There is a French language mailing list just like this one:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Send your problem to them in French, and you
should get a reply in French.

 Simple solution:

your papers in Word's format. It's just a matter of knowing where to
look. (And this is very easily overlooked.)]

Re: [users] Seem to have lost OO

2007-01-12 Thread James Mckenzie
Barbara:

This is why we recommend installing to the Applications folder.

However, this will not help your situation, so I will give the following
VOLUNTEER advice:

1. Go to the Applications folder.
2. Open the Utilities folder.
3. Find the Terminal application and open/start it.
4. Type in the following command:
 find . -name '*.dmg'
This will search all of the folders for the current user
for files ending in .dmg to include the Trash.
If you do not find this file, you can revisit the
OpenOffice.org site and download it a second (
or if needed a third, fourth, fifth, etc. time.)

Please, after downloading the .dmg file, place the
OpenOffice.org 2.1 item in your Applications folder.

If you wish, to remove it, instructions can be
found at the Mac Porting FAQ site which can be accessed
from http://porting.openoffice.org/mac

Yes, that will get rid of them as long as you remember to empty
the recycle bin also. Otherwise, they will remain in that folder
until you empty it.

Could also be MacIntosh. There is no MS Office that I know of for Linux.

If it is a MacIntosh based system, we need the following information:
CPU type (G4, G5, Intel Duo are examples)
CPU speed
Version of MacOSX
Amount of installed Memory.
These can all be found by clicking on the Apple symbol and clicking on About
this Mac.
