Hello, This is my second attempt to get help from you. Here is a copy of the email I sent below. If this isn't the right address, I would greatly appreciate your pointing me to another email address. Thank you. I want to download openoffice.org 1.1x, but the only downloading option I can get is for the newer 2.2 version. It will take 15 hours! I already have Microsoft Office Suite 2000 installed. I need to repair the documents program. Please advise on how to download the 1.1x version, or another option if you know of one.

hello there. Have just bought my wife a new Acer laptop, pre-loaded with Vista Home Premium. I downloaded OpenOffice 2.2.1 yesterday, but Windows refuses to recognize the file format. Is this due to Vista having a different OS than XP ( I use 2.2.1 without problems om my PC with XP/SP2) ? Or can somebody please explain how I can get the laptop to load and run 2.2.1 ? thanks in advance, Paul Allen - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[users] I am using version 2.2 of OpenOffice.org for mac osx. My problem is : compatibility with ms word for mac
Hi I thought that openoffice was compatible with msword 2004 for mac, but it is not. If I change a word document in originally created in msword and wants to save it, there are no options for word for mac. Only for msword versions through xp and the formatting comes out differently (like a bulleted list for example). Is there anything one can do about this problem? thanks! Hello Mr/Mrs, Sorry in advance... First of all, I should state, I have never used Excel nor Calc, because it lacks of mathematical usability (not functionality...). Of course, all I demand can be done with both, anyway, I would prefer a NON-M$ solution. I will explain myself based on this example: If I want to operate column A plus column B and get the result at column C why should I click on cell C1 and operate cell A1 plus cell B1, and then extend the selection until row 1230292 (for example). Do not you think is better to write C = A + B. Lets suppose column A and column B are different sized columns. Then, column C only should be calculated at the common range of elements between A and B. Lets suppose I want to operate column A form row 100 to row 200 with column B from row 10 to row 110. Is it possible to write C[500:600] = A[100:200] + B[10:110], and not to have to use the mouse with super-scroll-you-are-always-lost. I think this example is quite basic, we are talking about a data manipulation software. In conclusion, what I think is that Openoffice.org Calc, is an exact copy of a functional but non usable software. I accept, the only way to compete with M$ is to copy then at a lower price, but some times improving a product is not a matter of money, just is a matter of listening people... Thanks in advance... This mail is aims to be critic with M$Excel for being designed for silly people. I am not saying people is silly, what I want to say is M$ designs products thinking people is silly. Please, do not fall in the same hole. People who do not know how to do things will learn. Do not force people who knows howto, to learn non intuitive procedures! (I mean, non a intuitive procedure is to sum A1 + B1 and extend the selection). Best regards. {[{{[CRITIC_IN_POSITIVE]}}]} - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am using OO 2.0.2 on the Winblow$ XP-Pro platform build2600. I have attempted to insert sequential graphics ( as .jpg's) and find that they will not remain in registration. They constantly overlap, the primary view window keeps moving the graphic and position relative to some unknown element, whenever I attempt to save after I get a single page of 3 jpgs when I pull it back up all three are overlaped at the top of the page. I position the graphic and set left align then set wrap at none ( using page wrap is a disaster it will not even allow me to place the graphics without moving or overlaping,,, from page to page. Re: [users] Spelling Grammar Checker
JM Shannon wrote: I realy like Open Office but is there or am I over looking spelling grammar checker? Spell checking is built in. a) Install the appropriate dictionaries, thesauri, and hyphenation dictionaries. File Wizards Install new dictionaries should bring up the tool for installing dictionaries. * This tool will automatically check to see if it is the most current version. If it is not, then it will ask if you want to update to the current version. * The user interface for version 1.7 is in 27 languages; * It lists roughly 120 dictionaries for spell checking; ** There are some ---probably less than a dozen --- dictionaries for OOo that are not listed in this tool. For the most part, the unlisted dictionaries are very new, very specialized, or very large. * Only install dictionaries etc that you use, and need. OOo performance can be severely degraded if too many dictionaries, etc are installed. [My experience is that performance degradation is noticeable at around 5 dictionaries, and is complete at around 100 dictionaries. The amount of RAM, and your chip speed will affect the performance degradation.] b) Create and use language specific styles; * For each language, you need to create a set of styles. When you write, use those styles. This way spell checking will be correctly done. With language specific styles, grammar checking can be transparently done. Obsolete stuff: * DictInstall is obsolete, and works only on Windows. It can be obtained from http://ooodocs.sourceforge.net/dictinstall/ Grammar Checking You can find a list of grammar checkers at http://lingucomponent.openoffice.org/grammar.html You can find an article on installing LanguageTool at http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=07/04/27/2033202 Note: Select your grammar checker according tot he languages that you use. PPS files van be opened with the *free* (from Microsoft, not from OpenOffice.org) Powerpoint Viewer. They can also be opened with Excel or Calc (see below) EML files are nothing to do with any *office* suite. They are, as their name sort of suggests, e-mail messages. You might be able to open them with Mozilla's (free) Thunderbird e-mail program. Please visit the Mozilla web site for more information. I wonder where I got the idea that it originated as a SunOS application or was written on a SunOS machine. I actually used to sell GeoWorks. It was bundled with Vtech Laser computer for a while, along with DOS 4.0. Cool stuff indeed, at the time. I remember being in total awe of their word processor with all of those fonts, and thinking that a laser printer would be a lovely thing to use with that setup. Of course, at the time a cheap laser printer was over $10,000 so there wasn't much chance of that happening anywhere near me. Hi again Prefacing with an open apology to the list for my tangent regarding OOo and the old 75Mhz/32Mb machine; it just took my by complete surprise when comparing the two side-by-side. And yes, I should actually have compared apples to apples... I hope you don't feel discouraged or misunderstood. My comments weren't meant to be negative (maybe a little balancing), and I loved your story about rediscovering your old computer. I love old machines, lean and mean machines and little machines. A lot of your comments brought back great memories for me. When I look back at the computers I've had over the last almost two decades, I think they were all about equally responsive. And today's computers are definitely not the most responsive. In some ways they're also not the most powerful. That's a shame. In the mid to late ninetees - when bloat seemed to be at its worst and I was still buying software - I used to user older versions of software for their speed. And if I ever saw my favourite software on special, I'd buy it: not for my current computer, but so I had options when I bought my next faster computer. That's just silly! Overall, I'm pretty happy with the software I use at the moment. I find the free and open source software movement(s) very empowering, and I feel like I've got lots of options. I can use software that is slower but has more features (like OpenOffice.org and KDE), or software that has less features but is much more responsive (like Abiword, KOffice, XFCE, Fluxbox). But in my life there will always be a place for reminiscing about my favourite programs from previous eras. And if my old machines stay alive long enough, I'll be able to play with them from time to time as well! Maybe I should use VirtualBox (or similar) to recreate my favourite DOS, GeoWorks, Win 3.1 and Win 95 systems. Then I can play with them any time I want. Thanks again NoOp for letting me remember the good old days. Adrian - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If you have a look at the link I provided in my other post in this thread: http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/source/file_extensions.html you'll see many common file xtension names in the OOo source code that are common to MS: .ttf, .wav, .wmf, etc, .bmp, .bat, etc. It's also probably why Canon, Sony others use the .thm xtension to save their thumbnail files w/EXIF info. Re: [users] WINDOW VISTA BUSINESS
To fill out Frank's aesthetically attractive - but rather brief answer - I can report that I have installed OOo on a partition running Vista Business where it seems to function well. But my experience with OOo on Vista is limited, as I usually choose to use Ubuntu for any serious business (pun intended). One problem, which would keep me from doing major scribbling in Vista even if I wished to, is the fact that Windows IMEs are not accessible in the Business version of Vista, but only in the more expensive Enterprise and Ultimate versions. Thus, in my case, I am limited to the default languages - Swedish and US English - and cannot add other languages to the mix of supported languages. Interestingly enough, all the IME files, some 166 of them if I have counted correctly, are included in the Business package, but they cannot be opened - or at least, I've not yet figured out any way to do so. This would open up job opportunities and the use of these computers in elementary/high schools. I retired from a job three years ago where I was mostly working with mainframes running Fortran programs. For a few applications, we still maintained Assembler subroutines as they were up to ten times faster than similar Fortran routines from which the compiler had produced fully-optimised pseudo-assembler code. The problem with assembler routines was that there were too few programmers skilled in assembler. In my time, I found that similar speed improvements could be by checking the Fortran code was written efficiently. On one occasion, I found that replacing a frequently-used implied do-loop in data input [READ (ARRAY(I),I=1,J) where J was a large variable] with a small subroutine, made the program run ten times faster. This sort of code probably has no relevance to more modern languages but I suspect that an experienced programmer in those languages could find a few samples of inefficient code. I found that a large number of programmers where I worked were only interested in getting a program working. Worrying about how fast it ran or how much space the thing gobbled up was a bit beneath them. Even something as simple as using the full optimisation of the compiler when producing a final product was not contemplated, although this simple act would produce a two- or three-fold increase in speed. I wonder if this attitude also exists in programmers for the PC. I admit that I my programming experience may not be directly relevant to languages used for writing programs for the PC but I've seen descriptions of bug-fixes and coding improvements in PC products that suggested to me that in some cases programming standards were a decade or two behind what I'd been used to. -- Graham P Davis Bracknell, Berks., UK Send e-mails to newsman as mails to newsboy are ignored. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Kirill, I'd be most happy to comply, but I'm not sure I understand - a link to what ? If you mean one that corroborates my statement that IMEs are only available in the Enterprise or Ultimate versions of Vista, note the following statement found very, very far down the page, and by no means prominently displayed, at http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/vista/Whats_New_Vista.mspx#E4EAC «As long as you have either the Windows Vista Enterprise or Windows Vista Ultimate versions, one or more MUI packs can be added on top of any language system of Windows Vista. No longer do you need to have the English version, as in Windows XP, to have MUI functionality.» Note that something else, Language Interface Packs (LIPs) are available even in other Vista configurations, but these are of little help to me. My experience is that when I attempt to follow the standard procedure for adding languages to the default languages already supported in my version of Vista, the «add» button is grayed out, so that the (next) final step in the procedure can not be effectuated. If I've missed something here and you can apprise me of it so that I can gain access to these languages (in XP, in addition to input methods for CJK languages, I have used the spell-checking feature in French, Italian, German, and Norwegian, to save myself from the most egregious errors), I'd be very grateful indeed, to both you and our friends at Microsoft Henri Henri 2007/6/24, Kirill S. Multilingual User _Interface_ is not _Input_ Metod Editor. Am I corect that you are talking about inputting text in more than two langs? [users] Persistent Registration Screen
Hi All, I'm using version 2.1 of OpenOffice. My problem is the welcome/EULA/registration screen comes up EVERY time I start the app. It doesn't matter which option re registration I choose, it keeps coming back. I searched the forum and found a reference to an earlier version. That reference advised changing a Boolean value in the common.xcu file from true to false. Unfortunately, that file must have changed and that little section of code doesn't seem to be in that file now. It's driving me crazy, not to mention being time-consuming. Just to clarify, if I open calc for eg, the screen comes up, I wade through the 5 steps and I'm in. The little icon appears in the system tray (the load at startup option then checks itself by the way). If I then open Base, POP, the screen is back again. Open Draw, and it's there again. Any advice greatly appreciated Cheers, Stewart
