2007-06-24 Thread Lynea Search
Hello,

This is my second attempt to get help from you. Here is a copy of the email I
sent below. If this isn't the right address, I would greatly appreciate your
pointing me to another email address. Thank you.

I want to download openoffice.org 1.1x, but the only downloading option I can
get is for the newer 2.2 version. It will take 15 hours!

I already have Microsoft Office Suite 2000 installed. I need to repair the
documents program.

Please advise on how to download the 1.1x version, or another option if you
know of one.

Hi
I thought that openoffice was compatible with msword 2004 for mac,

Only for msword versions through xp and the formatting comes out
differently (like a bulleted list for example). Is there anything one

2007-06-24 Thread Luis Sanchez Sanchez

Hello Mr/Mrs,

Sorry in advance...

First of all, I should state, I have never used Excel nor Calc,
because it lacks of mathematical usability (not functionality...). Of
course, all I demand can be done with both, anyway, I would prefer a
NON-M$ solution.

I will explain myself based on this example:

If I want to operate column A plus column B and get the result at column
C why should I click on cell C1 and operate cell A1 plus cell B1, and
then extend the selection until row 1230292 (for example).

Do not you think is better to write C = A + B.

Lets suppose column A and column B are different sized columns. Then,
column C only should be calculated at the common range of elements
between A and B.

Lets suppose I want to operate column A form row 100 to row 200 with
column B from row 10 to row 110. Is it possible to write C[500:600] =
A[100:200] + B[10:110], and not to have to use the mouse with
super-scroll-you-are-always-lost.

I think this example is quite basic, we are talking about a data
manipulation software.

In conclusion, what I think is that Openoffice.org Calc, is an exact
copy of a functional but non usable software. I accept, the only way to
compete with M$ is to copy then at a lower price, but some times
improving a product is not a matter of money, just is a matter of
listening people...

Thanks in advance...

This mail is aims to be critic with M$Excel for being designed for
silly people. I am not saying people is silly, what I want to say is
M$ designs products thinking people is silly. Please, do not fall in the
same hole. People who do not know how to do things will learn. Do not
force people who knows howto, to learn non intuitive procedures!
(I mean, non a intuitive procedure is to sum A1 + B1 and extend the
selection).

Best regards.

using page wrap is a disaster it will not even allow me to place the

OpenOffice Write's native format is ODT.

Re: [users] Spelling Grammar Checker

2007-06-24 Thread jonathon
JM Shannon wrote:
I realy like Open Office but is there or am I over looking spelling
 grammar checker?

Spell checking is built in.

a) Install the appropriate dictionaries, thesauri, and
hyphenation dictionaries.
File Wizards Install new dictionaries should bring up
the tool for installing dictionaries.
* This tool will automatically check to see if it is the
most current version. If it is not, then it will ask if you
want to update to the current version.
* The user interface for version 1.7 is in 27 languages;
* It lists roughly 120 dictionaries for spell checking;
** There are some ---probably less than a dozen ---
dictionaries for OOo that are not listed in this tool. For
the most part, the unlisted dictionaries are very new, very
specialized, or very large.
* Only install dictionaries etc that you use, and need.
OOo performance can be severely degraded if too many
dictionaries, etc are installed. [My experience is that
performance degradation is noticeable at around 5
dictionaries, and is complete at around 100 dictionaries.
The amount of RAM, and your chip speed will affect the
performance degradation.]

b) Create and use language specific styles;
* For each language, you need to create a set of styles.
When you write, use those styles. This way spell checking
will be correctly done. With language specific styles,
grammar checking can be transparently done.

Obsolete stuff:

* DictInstall is obsolete, and works only on Windows. It can
be obtained from http://ooodocs.sourceforge.net/dictinstall/

Grammar Checking

You can find a list of grammar checkers at
http://lingucomponent.openoffice.org/grammar.html

You can find an article on installing LanguageTool at
http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=07/04/27/2033202

Note: Select your grammar checker according tot he
languages that you use. Different grammar checkers cover
different languages.

The phrase not having office is ambiguous. Do you mean you don't have
*Microsoft* Office? Do you mean you don't have *Open* Office? They are *not*
the same.

PPS files van be opened with the *free* (from Microsoft, not from
OpenOffice.org) Powerpoint Viewer. They can also be opened with Excel or
Calc (see below)

EML files are nothing to do with any *office* suite. They are, as their name
sort of suggests, e-mail messages. They are created by Microsoft's Outlook
Express (or Outlook, possibly) and you will need that program - not free -
to open them. You might be able to open them with Mozilla's (free)
Thunderbird e-mail program. Please visit the Mozilla web site for more
information.

XLS files can be opened with Microsoft's Excel which is part of their, not
free, office suite. They can also be opened with OpenOffice.org's free Calc
which is part of the OpenOffice suite.

Your choice.

OpenOffice can be downloaded and used completely free of charge in any
context and on as many computers as you like. Go to www.openoffice.org and
follow your nose to download the software.

Hi George

Take a look also at this cutting from previous threads:

(1)Tutorial for Spell check and Language configuration
http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=50862

(2) Languages in OpenOffice

To obtain the relevant dictionaries, go to
File - Wizards - Install new dictionaries
and download the ones you want.

To set the default language for your installation, go to
Tools - Options - Language Settings / Languages
and set the default for all your documents. If there is a
dictionary for your selection, there will be a tick mark against it.

It is important to remember that language is an attribute of the text
of a document, and can be set differently in different parts of
the same document. This allows foreign language quotes to be separately
checked against the appropriate dictionary.

To set the default for a document that is different from the
default setting for all other documents, when you have opened
the document (or started a new one) go to the Default style
and change it there. F11 (or Format - Styles and Formatting) brings up
the style list. Right click on Default (or the root style for your document)

go to Modify - Font tab where you can set the language for this style
and will be carried down to other styles derived from it unless
otherwise changed.

To change the language for a piece of text, highlight the text and go to
Format - Character - Font tab (or right click - Character - Font)
where you can set the language for just that portion of text.

If you set up your styles for a language in an empty document and then
save it as a template (File - Templates - Save), then you can select
the appropriate one to start a new document with File - New -
Templates and Documents

Hi Wayne

Maybe look at http://www.justlocal.com.au/clients/oooau/ where there is
an Australian dictionary with instructions on installing it manually.

Right click on Default (or the root style for your document)

go to Modify - Font tab where you can set the language for this style
and will be carried down to other styles derived from it unless otherwise
changed.

Excellent article. Thanks for the link!

The original GeoWorks was written in assembler.

Unless my memory is faulty (which is always a possibility) I think
Geoworks was originally written on Sun computers and cross-compiled
  to run on DOS machines.

I just checked this on Wikipedia, though, and it says that GeoWorks
was written in assembler. Odd. I wonder where I got the idea that
it originated as a SunOS application or was written on a SunOS
  machine.

I actually used to sell GeoWorks. It was bundled with Vtech Laser
computer for a while, along with DOS 4.0. Cool stuff indeed, at the
time. I remember being in total awe of their word processor with all
of those fonts, and thinking that a laser printer would be a lovely
thing to use with that setup. Of course, at the time a cheap laser
printer was over $10,000 so there wasn't much chance of that
  happening anywhere near me.

WordPerfect/DOS is a pure assembler program, and is (still) viewed by
many as being the ultimate word processor program. Apparently a
large number of professional novelists write with WordPerfect/DOS.

I had originally thought of the HP Vectra as a boat anchor... but I
think I'll keep it around for awhile. Now if I can just find a solid
tiny linux to put on it I can use it as a print server and use to help
heat the house this winter :-)

When I first read your piece, I thought 'Finally! someone has addressed the
issue of bloatware.' Other comments tempered your initial comments, of
course, but I think the underlying foundation is valid.

IBM blessed us with a standard computer design, which has evolved over the
years without radical changes, therefore the PC of 10 years ago with respect
to the ones of today are very similiar: less memory, less speed, less I/O.

In the name of recycling, we should be able to use these computers, in a
similiar capacity, just with fewer software features. Unfortunately,
although much is said about using Linux on older computers, Linux is
requiring more and more memory and speed. Fewer of these computers
would be destoyed, instead they would be 'reused'.

In order to use these old computers, we need more software written in
assembler. When the x86 based computer is more than 85% of the hardware
platforms in service today, I think writing for 'cross-platform' is a red
herring. An effort could be made to write libraries in assembler, and use
assembler for the portions of programs that are repetitive, and speed
sensitive. This would bring these older PCs back to life. 32-64 MB PCs
could be used for applications like OOo. Most of the newer features would
not be available, but the core features which are used the most would be
there. This effort would eliminate the so-called 'digital divide'. If I can
go to a thrift store and buy a 150Mhz Pentium with 32 MB of RAM 2 GB hard
drive for $35.00, and buy a cd off the net with linux and a tiny OOo for
$10.00, there is no excuse for the 'low income' population segment to not be
skilled in the use of the core OOo features. This would open up job
opportunities and the use of these computers in elementary/high schools.

By the way, I went to a user group meeting in the nineties, where a high level
Intel person spoke, and told us that there was a major difference between the
75Mhz pentium, and those of greater speeds, not just the Mhz.

As I say in Foxpro/DOS, set soapbox off,

OOo and the old 75Mhz/32Mb machine; it just took my by complete surprise

compared apples to apples...

I hope you don't feel discouraged or misunderstood. My comments weren't
meant to be negative (maybe a little balancing), and I loved your story
about rediscovering your old computer. I love old machines, lean and mean
machines and little machines. A lot of your comments brought back great
memories for me.

When I look back at the computers I've had over the last almost two
decades, I think they were all about equally responsive. And today's
computers are definitely not the most responsive. In some ways they're
also not the most powerful. That's a shame.

In the mid to late ninetees - when bloat seemed to be at its worst and I
was still buying software - I used to user older versions of software for
their speed. And if I ever saw my favourite software on special, I'd buy
it: not for my current computer, but so I had options when I bought my
next faster computer. That's just silly!

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the software I use at the moment. I find
the free and open source software movement(s) very empowering, and I feel
like I've got lots of options. I can use software that is slower but has
more features (like OpenOffice.org and KDE), or software that has less
features but is much more responsive (like Abiword, KOffice, XFCE,
Fluxbox).

But in my life there will always be a place for reminiscing about my
favourite programs from previous eras. And if my old machines stay alive
long enough, I'll be able to play with them from time to time as well!
Maybe I should use VirtualBox (or similar) to recreate my favourite DOS,
GeoWorks, Win 3.1 and Win 95 systems. Then I can play with them any time I
want.

Thanks again NoOp for letting me remember the good old days.

(2) If still not installed

type in the search box:

Someone asked this in 2005:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=42782
and was brushed off (no pun intended).

I suspect that it is to maintain compatibility with MS Office and MS OS
file registry associations and to ease importing gallery thumbnails from
MS sources other sources.

If you have a look at the link I provided in my other post in this thread:
http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/source/file_extensions.html
you'll see many common file xtension names in the OOo source code that
are common to MS: .ttf, .wav, .wmf, etc, .bmp, .bat, etc.

It's also probably why Canon, Sony others use the .thm xtension to
save their thumbnail files w/EXIF info.

Ping KAMI; I'd bet he'd know the detailed answer as his project has
extensive extended galleries for OOo. It would also be interesting to
know if perhaps one could actually put the Canon .thm thumbnails into
the OOo gallery and have them show up and be usable.
Hmmm... I might give that a try; now where did my son hide my old Canon
A75...

Canon thm files might have different fortmat. So this is not possible.
Also OpenOffice.org gallery themes divided into three type of files.

  spelling grammar checker?

 Spell checking is built in.

 a) Install the appropriate dictionaries, thesauri, and
 hyphenation dictionaries.
File Wizards Install new dictionaries should bring up
 the tool for installing dictionaries.
 * This tool will automatically check to see if it is the
most current version. If it is not, then it will ask if you
want to update to the current version.
 * The user interface for version 1.7 is in 27 languages;
 * It lists roughly 120 dictionaries for spell checking;
The amount of RAM, and your chip speed will affect the
 performance degradation.]

 b) Create and use language specific styles;
 * For each language, you need to create a set of styles.
When you write, use those styles. This way spell checking
will be correctly done. With language specific styles,
grammar checking can be transparently done.

 Obsolete stuff:

 * DictInstall is obsolete, and works only on Windows. It can
 be obtained from http://ooodocs.sourceforge.net/dictinstall/

 Grammar Checking

You can find a list of grammar checkers at

You can find an article on installing LanguageTool at

Re: [users] WINDOW VISTA BUSINESS

2007-06-24 Thread M Henri Day

To fill out Frank's aesthetically attractive - but rather brief answer - I
can report that I have installed OOo on a partition running Vista Business
where it seems to function well. But my experience with OOo on Vista is
limited, as I usually choose to use Ubuntu for any serious business (pun
intended). One problem, which would keep me from doing major scribbling in
Vista even if I wished to, is the fact that Windows IMEs are not accessible
in the Business version of Vista, but only in the more expensive Enterprise
and Ultimate versions. Thus, in my case, I am limited to the default
languages - Swedish and US English - and cannot add other languages to the
mix of supported languages. Interestingly enough, all the IME files, some

If I
 can
go to a thrift store and buy a 150Mhz Pentium with 32 MB of RAM 2 GB hard
drive for $35.00, and buy a cd off the net with linux and a tiny OOo for
$10.00, there is no excuse for the 'low income' population segment to not
 be
skilled in the use of the core OOo features. This would open up job
opportunities and the use of these computers in elementary/high schools.

I retired from a job three years ago where I was mostly working with
mainframes running Fortran programs. For a few applications, we still
maintained Assembler subroutines as they were up to ten times faster than
similar Fortran routines from which the compiler had produced
fully-optimised pseudo-assembler code. The problem with assembler routines
was that there were too few programmers skilled in assembler.

In my time, I found that similar speed improvements could be by checking the
Fortran code was written efficiently. On one occasion, I found that
replacing a frequently-used implied do-loop in data input [READ
(ARRAY(I),I=1,J) where J was a large variable] with a small subroutine,
made the program run ten times faster. This sort of code probably has no
relevance to more modern languages but I suspect that an experienced
programmer in those languages could find a few samples of inefficient code.

I found that a large number of programmers where I worked were only
interested in getting a program working. Worrying about how fast it ran or
how much space the thing gobbled up was a bit beneath them. Even something
as simple as using the full optimisation of the compiler when producing a
final product was not contemplated, although this simple act would produce
a two- or three-fold increase in speed. I wonder if this attitude also
exists in programmers for the PC.

I admit that I my programming experience may not be directly relevant to
languages used for writing programs for the PC but I've seen descriptions
of bug-fixes and coding improvements in PC products that suggested to me
that in some cases programming standards were a decade or two behind what
I'd been used to.

Sidney Westmoreland

Please tell us (a) exactly which version of OpenOffice you are trying
to use (b) which Operating System (and version) you are using and (c)
the exact text of the error message.

Also, where did you get the software from? Has it ever worked on your
system?

Without this information I'm afraid we can't help you.

Harold,

My interest was in providing feedback but could not figure a way to get
the report sent.

The version of OpenOffice Writer is: 2.2.0 (The free version. )
The operating system is: Windows 98 Second Edition 4.10.A
The text of the error message was that an error had occurred and
requested that an error report be sent. There was a file attached
containing the error information.

The software was downloaded from the Internet site of OpenOffice.org.
The software functions well both on the old Armada M700 and on a second
cobbled together box running Windows 98 Second Edition 4.10.B. I
have received no error messages while using the software on the B box.

One oddity common to both boxes is that if OO Writer is the last
software used before shutting down. the machine hangs at the splash
screen and does not complete shutdown.

Other users have reported similar problems, regarding OOo 2.x and
Windows 98 Second Edition; it seems to be one or two Win98 bugs and
there were also some Microsoft-Patches; perhaps here you'll find some
remedy (... with mental reservation ...) -

I don't know enough about the software yet to have any firm opinions
except that it copes well with MS Word documents and has done everything
I needed for it to do. If you are interested in an old man's experiences
with OO2 I will be willing to share these with you. My primary
motivation is to make a small contribution to having viable choices when
it comes to software.

Thanks for your response,

While there are converts in the works, currently no. You'll have to
save in the older .XLS format. There is nothing, outside of Office

[users] searching openofficeorg20.msi

2007-06-24 Thread Allan Jäke

hello

I want to install current 2.2x on windows 2ksp4, but the installer needs
openofficeorg20.msi to clean the old version (2.02 de / german). I don´t
have the old installation-source any more.

It seems to be impossible to find the old file in the web.
www.openoffice.org is really no help, because it always presents the
current version - the mirrors too. This really [...X...] me. ;)

any idea?

Al

[users] [moderated] Downloadmanager for Firefox users to download new versions of Open Office

2007-06-24 Thread Petra Becker

Dear all,

On the German page of Open Office.org
(http://de.openoffice.org/downloads/quick.html) it is recommended to use
a download manager to download the newest version of the programm. Some
are mentionend but none of them works with the current version of
Firefox which I use as browser. In searching for a compatible download
manager I discovered 'Down them all', an add on for Firefox. It's
available under
/http://www.erweiterungen.de/detail/Down_Them_All%21/9b0565839cb3f2d4366cfd4907ffa057/.
Maybe it's possible to mention it on your download page for all Firefox
users.

Best regards

[users] Persistent Registration Screen

2007-06-24 Thread Stewart Greedy

Hi All,

I'm using version 2.1 of OpenOffice. My problem is the
welcome/EULA/registration screen comes up EVERY time I start the app. It
doesn't matter which option re registration I choose, it keeps coming back.
I searched the forum and found a reference to an earlier version. That
reference advised changing a Boolean value in the common.xcu file from true
to false. Unfortunately, that file must have changed and that little section
of code doesn't seem to be in that file now. It's driving me crazy, not to
mention being time-consuming. Just to clarify, if I open calc for eg, the
screen comes up, I wade through the 5 steps and I'm in. The little icon
appears in the system tray (the load at startup option then checks itself by
the way). If I then open Base, POP, the screen is back again. Open Draw, and
it's there again. Any advice greatly appreciated

Cheers,

Stewart

Don't see converter for Xcell but the following link has one for word
 documents.

 Go to: http://download.novell.com/SummaryFree.jsp?buildid=ESrjfdE4U58~
download the odf-converter-1.0.0-5.i86.rpm and the installation
 instructions.
Then use YaST to install it. I did this and had people send me .docx
 douments
from Office 2007 I was able open them and also save .odf as .docx and they
 were able to open them.
